Tourette's Awareness Month - Day 2: Keywords
Complex tic: when multiple muscle groups are used, multiple words (e.g., throwing something)
Premonitory urge: a very uncomfortable sensation (a build up of energy, electric/fiery/bubbling/tickling/crawling) that builds up before a tic. Not everyone experiences this and it doesn't happen before every tic.
Suppressing: the act of 'holding in' tics, often increasing the premonitory urge and making them worse later. Not everyone can suppress and it can only be done for so long. People may do it to avoid judgement, for safety.
Coprolalia: a socially inappropriate vocal tic (e.g., swearing, a slur)
Copropraxia: a socially inappropriate motor (physical) tic (e.g., 🖕)
Echolalia: vocally repeating other people's words or sounds, can also extend to animal sounds
Echopraxia: physically repeating others actions
Waxing: a period of increased frequency or intensity of tics, or a flare up
Waning: a period of decreased tic frequency/intensity
Tic attack: a highly intense period of constant, often intense, tics, completely uncontrollable and unstoppable
Trigger: something that sets off a person's tics or a particular tic
Dystonic tics: slower tics, abnormal posture or straining of a body part
Blocking tics: a tic which takes away a person's ability to move/speak
There are definitely more but these are a good handful!

Much of the time I find the way that we’re told to manage tics very much prioritises others rather than the person with tics.
Oftentimes it’s about how to make us more palatable to those who don’t have tics, whether that is being in good humour and allowing them to laugh at us regardless of whether we are comfortable with that, locking ourselves up at home so people don’t have to see something “icky”, putting ourselves in the constant discomfort of suppressing tics for no reason but the fact that other people are ignorant.
Justifying ableism as “well what do you expect going out and yelling swear words?”. When my tics first developed my parents threatened to never let me leave the house, go to school or see friends saying that I have to “think of others”. It is always seen as my responsibility to educate and jump through hoops to be treated with basic decency. People make it very clear that their few seconds of discomfort are priority over my entire life.

Here's some thoughts on how our tic disorder affects our plurality and vice versa, I'd love to here others experiences and compares
So for us certain members will be significantly less or more effective by tics. Some of us will find it extremely easy to control or push tics away till later, and some us will have basically no control and find it very difficult to impossible to suppress tics
Some of us will get tic. In the headspace. Like if someone is co-con it's possible to redirect the tics to the headspace body of whoever's co-con and the physical body be unaffected
We will also have front changes triggered by a tic, or a tic attack triggered by a front change. Or a front change Abruptly stop a tic attack
Love to hear any similar (or different) experiences =]

Having to lock yourself in your bedroom during an extreme tic attack so you don’t hurt anyone or yourself is a feeling I wish I never had to fucking experience. I fucking hate this. Why does my brain have to work like this. Fuck.

"You know, the more I think about it, Tourette's is a proper super power"... "You can say literally anything you like and say it was a tic, fantastic!".
Yeah, it's funny until...
I tic a slur or something offensive or scary and it angers someone
I hurt myself
I hurt someone else
I can't carry out basic things like holding a drink, cooking, feeding myself...
I get muscle and joint pains from the repetitive motor tics
I sustain a long term injury
I freeze in the middle of the road with oncoming traffic
You can't go into a place because my tics are too loud or offensive
I have a tic attack
I become too exhausted to do anything
I can't do certain hobbies or activities, or I have to give up activities because my tics make them impossible to do
People tell you to 'shut up' and 'stop ticcing' because 'it's annoying' or 'what you're saying is rude'
You can't sleep because your tics won't give up
You can't stand for periods of time because your legs have been ruined by your tics
People stare at you
You get thrown out of a shop for being too loud or offensive
You're scared to go certain places
The list goes on.

Its honestly terrifying that I'm the one educating healthcare professionals on my medical condition. When I was hospitalised for my tics I was attended to by psychiatrists and asked questions about whether I was hearing voices and similar such things. To those who don't know Tourettes is a neurological condition, I should have seen neurologist rather than psychologists and psyciatrists. I was put on anti psychotics for months that ruined my mental health and did nothing to improve my tics. The wariness from this situation led to me refusing and hating medications for period of time, making situations far worse.
A psychiatrist diagnosed me with Tourettes. He was not qualified to do that, only a neurologist can diagnose Tourettes. When I went to see a neurologist who we were told specialised in tics Upon arrival, after months and months of waiting we were told:
oh yeah sorry this is too complex for me. I don't really know anything about tourettes.
I've been forced to educate myself because I just cannot trust doctors.
I've been told things from "oh everyone gets that" too you just need to sleep more, eat spinach, you're too stressed about school.
It's scary when the people who hold your life in their hands don't understand the basics of your medical condition.
My situation is better than most. I have been extremely privileged where my family could afford private health and the many treatments, specialists and medication I need to not suffer and be able to live my life. This is how bad it is for me, you can imagine how much worse it is for people who cannot access this healthcare. People who don't have the option to go to the hospital in case of emergency, people who can't afford to switch doctors until they find one that takes them seriously, people who can't afford medications.

I got all kinds of motor tics went to the store and shoved my cart full of them suckers and I have been recently trying too figure out who I would rank their annoyance and my least favorite or eye or vision related tics like my body going nah you don't get to see is mental. But besides that a weird thing is the tics, I was just about to write that everyone gets them I realized/remembered not everyone gets tics besides hiccups, so I'll explain, what I'll call internal tics like I don't know what is there but minute ago right under my left rib was ticking no clue how or why but it happens and those just feel weird but I don't know how to rank them they don't hurt me or be disruptive, like my arms or legs can be. Oh and fuck neck tics.
This post is really gonna resonate with one person and that person probably doesn't even have Tumblr
