The day was first celebrated in 2010 when 13 Tiger range countries came together for a Tiger Summit in Saint Petersburg in Russia. The summit was held to create ‘Tx2 – Double the Tigers’ campaign to increase the number of the endangered animal. The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) along with several companies partnering it promoted the campaign through investigating the rangers which has led to an increase in tigers’ population.

The day is quite special in India, as India houses about 70% of total tigers present on the earth. In the year 2010, India recorded 1411 tigers alive in its forest vicinity which was quite alarming. Since ‘Double the tiger’ campaign, the tiger count increased to 2967 as recorded in 2019.
