i doubt this holds any interest, because they are such a minor character, but i would like to bring Spiritomb to attention, even though their relationship with Dusknoir is very vague? If only because it is a character that rarely gets talked about, despite them being one of the only Dark Future Pokémon we ever meet, even taking the place of the prototypical pokemon in that time during Episode 14.
I think their vague status between "random Dark Future Pokémon" in the main story and then "dusknoir's servant" in se5 can make a fun example of how Dusknoir treats regular pokémon in his native time (i know the doylist explanation of why spiritomb is here is probably character economy, reusing concepts from the main plot to make the plot tidier, but let me ramble for a bit). Or, at least, it helps emphasize the casual cruelty dusknoir is able to display at this point.

Despite how eagerly Spiritomb jumped Grovyle in the main story, the way they speak makes pretty clear that this attack was not their own initiative. In fact, Spiritomb seems reluctant to even bring up their desire to leave. all in all they sound like a reluctant intern who's trying not to fuck up but really does not want to be here?
They clearly seem intimidated, or at least respectful of Dusknoir. They address him with suspension points, as if unsure, and once again states their desire to leave, despite not wanting to sound insubordinate. Rather than respect, I simply believe he's fearful. Which, uh, is probably understandable considering he's been ordered to keep Celebi hostage after she was captured by dialga and he's witnessing how much agony Dusknoir can cause to his enemies.
Nevertheless, their desire to leave could not be treated with less indifference from Dusknoir, who, in all fairness, is probably entering a big high thanks to his plan's success. Hell, he can't even stop himself from laughing (in satisfaction? or perhaps anticipation for his big evil laugh soon after) before ordering Spiritomb to stay.

"Remain with us a little longer!", he exclaims. The simultaneous downside and upside of text without voice acting is that the tone of the dialogue is heavily dependent on how we read it. In my own view, though, I'd say he's trying to sound like an affable host, kindly inviting Spiritomb to stay, as if they were friend. And of course, he has his followers block Spiritomb's path immediately so they cannot escape. The threat seems pretty clear to me in the scene, and for that reason I do not think it's a reach to say that Dusknoir would have ordered Spiritomb to be threatened or physically hurt if they expressed any more intentions to withdraw.
(the reason for wanting Spiritomb to stay is also left unstated, iirc? The most pragmatic reason would be assuming if spiritomb left, celebi would be left free, and dusknoir doesn't want that. However, we are given no indication that the sableye could not move celebi or that spiritomb needs to stay exactly there to neutralize celebi. Idk i think dusknoir's just being petty. "look at what i did everyone i am so proud of myself i am the smartest most cleverest boy that ever lived"<- about to get an existential revelation so great it kicks him out of the closet into the wrath of god)
From the casual manner in which he acts this way, I tend to accept this as Dusknoir's behaviour in situations where kindness won't get him what he wants. And accounting for his indifference towards Spiritomb despite them neutralizing a legendary pokemon that only Dialga could chase down, I hardly believe Dusknoir would treat the sableye any better if they ever showed signs of hesitation while following orders.
That fact makes the Sableye's seemingly long-time wishes of saving planet almost heart-breaking. If you talk to them before entering Vast Ice Mountain, they say it's hard to be brave, and it's curious to me how Dusknoir -while also being unable to be brave and see the point of sacrifice until the end of se5- was unwittingly contributing to the Sableye being unable to find that determination too. Both of them were contributing to keeping the future in darkness, not just physically by attacking the insurgents, but mentally, as not a spark of hope could ever flourish when their mission was to crush that very dream they held somewhere deep in their hearts.
I personally really like the way he acts so affable and welcoming while putting the sableye on spiritomb's back. It overall feels like a perfect encapsulation of his plan with Hero and Partner in Treasure Town: putting the front of a friendly, powerful, humble explorer while waiting for the chance to take Grovyle and the young explorers to their execution. Now he invites Spiritomb to stay as if this was their collective success, while ensuring he will keep this audience for his evil speech. Much like him going "or is it? ;)))" before kidnapping hero/partner, this playful attitude of his seems to suggest he's truly pushed his morals deep down so he can ultimately feel some sort of joy or triumph from these heinous actions. All in name of keeping his own dull existence going a little longer.
This clash between his kind persona and dark identity, which is toyed with and finally a key component of his development in se5, where he finally shows his inner goodness, is very compelling to me. And imagining him trying to connect with others in more genuine ways after se5 makes me soft.
[this was a reblog i did for the sableye&dusknoir post, but the post was weirdly formatted and it was bothering me so im putting it separately]
#so anyways i think dusknoir is insane hes just very polite about it#'did u write all this irrelevant filler just to say 'dusknoir is petty and uncaring towards others sometimes'?' maybe#im just saying up 'tilthe end of se5 he would have killed a sableye if they werent useful anymore probably imo i think i believe from my po#i think recognizing his cruelty/bad side sometimes is important. otherwise what's the point of the mean antagonist#getting a redemption arc :'DD#he can adopt them as minions/companions/servants after se5 again tho. theyre a package deal after all#idr why i wrote this tbh i think i was just thinking of dusknoir being petty and cruel and acting like a villain#i like him soft but before that he has to be mean. as a treat.#dusknoir#pmd2#spiritomb#im scraping the bottom of the barrel trying to find stuff to talk about regarding dusknoir bro#i had to separate this post bc the way i formatted it last time made it really hard to find#i thought 'read more' and 'expand' worked independently in posts but nope thats my b#this still works as a sort of complement to that post tho

Pepper Poppers
Chapter 2: New Beginnings
[Shane POV]
The alarm forces him up from slumber groaning as the pounding to his head accompanies this. He gets out of bed and changes into his work uniform. When he leaves his room he sees Jas eating a stack on pancakes and Marnie slicing some apples.
“Hey kiddo, I’m off to work see you later” Shane pats Jas on her head and nods to Marnie before leaving for Joja.
15 minutes later and he’s clocked in back to the mundane cycle of stocking and listing items. Sam eventually stumbles in and greets Shane like he usually does. Shane envies how happy Sam can be in such a mind-numbing place. How he has more potential and life in him than he ever did.
The routine begins of Shane stocking and documenting and Sam... being Sam.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Farmer POV]
The fresh morning air wakes the farmer up and she looks around confused for a second as to why she’s in a rundown shack.
“Oh yea, career swap.” she mutters, getting herself out of bed and into a pair of overalls and a t-shirt. She looks through the seeds and tools she was gifted when she first moved in here and looked up how to care for parsnips. After a few articles and TikTok's she got a general idea and walked out to her new farm.
It wasn't a bad land, but it was a mess. Being abandoned for who knows how long has affected the grounds way more than she would like. Overgrown grass, rocks, and trees for as far as the eye can see floods the place. She looks around for a patch of land to start her parsnips with little rubble to disturb the process. Awkwardly trying to tilth, the soil and plant the seeds took longer than expected but was eventually completed.
“Guess I should start with clearing up this land, can’t be a successful farmer without land” she says and begins cutting away at a small area removing rocks, weeds, and whatever else has overgrown in the area. She remembers she has an axe and runs to her home to grab it.
It’s heavier than expected but she grips it and walks to a smaller tree to try and hack away at it.
“Here goes nothing” she says before she swings the axe with all her strength. The axe just sticks into the trees bark and she is out of breath sweating up a storm.
“I should have kept my gym membership.” she cries trying to pull the axe out of the tree. After an embarrassingly long struggle she finally gets it lost and delivers another messy blow. The farmer works away at the tree for what seems like ages until it finally falls, and she’s left with the stump. This is when it dawns on her that she has no idea what to do with a fallen tree, or a stump. After a few google searches, she decides to break the wood into smaller pieces and store them somewhere until they’ll get a use. This process was long and tiring, draining the farmer of her energy.
After that fiasco the farmer realizes if she’s going to start over, she will need to become more educated about this new lifestyle. She can’t stop to google everything and needs to become more knowledgeable about farming. The farmer showers off the day's work and plans out a schedule to help educate this new lifestyle.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------[Shane POV]
The clock hits 5 and like a porgram code in a computer Shane gets out of work and follows his routine of heading to the saloon. When he enters the building, the air is back to normal. No more extra buzz or light like the previous night. He signs in relief and returns to his usual corner with the same beer he always drinks. He’s back to a fly on the wall observing people around him and thinking about nothing but the bitter taste of beer on his tongue and the smell of peppers in the air.
Marnie eventually walks up to Shane, which isn't unusual but not exactly something she does often.
“Shane dear, maybe some nights after work you should skip the Saloon and head back home. Jas misses spending more time with you and been asking for you. I know you find comfort here and everything hasn’t been easy, but she still needs you.” the warm woman said with a pleading look in her eyes.
Shane sighs and looks up at her. He wants nothing more than to brush her off and curl into a ball and disappear but at the end of the day she’s right and Jas does need him.
“Yea ok.” he mutters, turning away from Marnie before putting some cash on the table and walking out of the Saloon.
“Great two nights in a row I leave the Saloon early.” He grunts as he walks back to Marnie home.
When he enters the house, he looks around for Jas just to find her with the chickens.
‘Hey uncle Shane.” Her eyes light up and she runs to hug him”
“Hey Jas, whatcha doing in here with these lovely ladies? Isn’t it your bedtime.” Shane questions.
“Yea but no one was home, and I wanted to pet your chicken.” She cheers. Shane smiles at her and bends down to pet his favorite chicken as well.
“Okay little lady it’s time to get you in bed, Marnie would kill me if I let you stay up any longer.” Shane picks up Jas and brings her to her bed tucking her in like the previous night. As much as Shane hates this town and his life, he loves Jas and wants to give her the opportunity to be better. It’s unfair she got stuck with him and must witness times he over drinks or falls into a hole that's hard to get out of, but he wants to provide what he can and hopefully help her make a life he wished he got.
He knows he’s not cut out for parenthood. He knows nothing about people, and even less about children. He wonders if what he’s doing is right or if he should have given up custody but in his own selfish way, he could not part ways with Jas. He needs her and he hopes she needs him. The only reason he’s been here this long was for Jas and he knows he can’t leave her; she’s already lost so much. His eyes begin to water at the thought, and he leaves her sleeping figure to go to his room and crack open an emergency beer. He knows he shouldn’t do this nasty habit when any emotion arrives but it’s an addiction he doesn’t want to break. After a few cans Shane still doesn’t feel drowned out enough, so he whips out his bottle of peanut butter whiskey and takes a few chugs. This was finally enough to numb out his mind and make his world spin in the way he finds comfort.
Soon enough Shane eventually passes out and the house is quiet once more.

"Deep indeed run the roots of Evil," said Borlas, "and the black sap is strong in them. That tree will never be slain. Let men hew it as often as they may, it will thrust up shoots again as soon as they turn aside."

"Alas!" he said, "we all make mistakes. I do not claim wisdom, young man, except maybe the little that one may glean with the passing of the years. From which I know well enough the sad truth that those who mean well may do more harm than those who let things be."

"To trees all Men are Orcs. Do Men consider the fulfilment of the life-story of a tree before they cut it down? For whatever purpose: to have its room for tilth, to use its flesh as timber or as fuel, or merely to open the view?"

"You have heard then the name?" With hardly more than breath he formed it. "Of Herumor?"

"First tell me," he said slowly, "are you one of those who have listened to the call?"

"Perhaps I have been preserved so long for this purpose: that one should still live, hale in mind, who remembers what went before the Great Peace. Scent has a long memory. I think I could still smell the old Evil, and know it for what it is."

ðar "farming"
ðar /ðar/ [ðɐː]
farming, farmwork, agriculture, tilth, the business and activity of cultivating land and raising livestock;
(in certain idiomatic expressions, more generally) work, toil, labour, drudge, any particularly strenuous activity;
(colloquially) sex, intercourse, the act of having sex with somebody
Etymology: Middle Borlish deverbal from ðarar "plough, till; farm; labour", originally restricted to crop production and not animal husbandry. This descends uncomplicatedly from Latin adarō "I plough, till". In the last sense it is attested since the early twentieth century but is thought to be much older; cf. Tuscan arare "to plough; to have sex with".
Whether or not the namers of the Minister a Ðar "Ministry for Agriculture" were aware of the slang usage, many caricaturists have since seized on the pun.
L'a un sgart mallovicher de ðar. /la ɪn sgart ˌma.lo.vɪˈkɛr de ðar/ [la ɪn zgɐːt ˌma.lʊ,vɪˈkɛː de ðɐː] 3s=have indf view overly.optimistic of farming He's very naïve about farmwork.

Narrated Nafi`:
Whenever Ibn `Umar رضی اللہ عنہما recited the Qur'an, he would not speak to anyone till he had finished his recitation. Once I held the Qur'an and he recited Surat-al-Baqara from his memory and then stopped at a certain Verse and said, "Do you know in what connection this Verse was revealed?" I replied, "No." He said, "It was revealed in such-and-such connection." Ibn `Umar then resumed his recitation. Nafi` added regarding the Verse:--"So go to your tilth when or how you will" Ibn `Umar said, "It means one should approach his wife in .."

I do not press my fingers across my mouth,
I keep as delicate around the bowels as around the head and heart,
Copulation is no more rank to me than death is.
I believe in the flesh and the appetites,
Seeing, hearing, feeling, are miracles, and each part and tag of me is a miracle.
Divine am I inside and out, and I make holy whatever I touch or am touch'd from,
The scent of these arm-pits aroma finer than prayer,
This head more than churches, bibles, and all the creeds.
If I worship one thing more than another it shall be the spread of my own body, or any part of it,
Translucent mould of me it shall be you!
Shaded ledges and rests it shall be you!
Firm masculine colter it shall be you!
Whatever goes to the tilth of me it shall be you!
You my rich blood!

Covering the Jews in Humiliation and Misery
Allah said,
وَضُرِبَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ الذِّلَّةُ وَالْمَسْكَنَةُ
And they were covered with humiliation and misery.
This Ayah indicates that the Children of Israel were plagued with humiliation, and that this will continue, meaning that it will never cease. They will continue to suffer humiliation at the hands of all who interact with them, along with the disgrace that they feel inwardly.
▪︎ Al-Hasan commented,
"Allah humiliated them, and they shall have no protector. Allah put them under the feet of the Muslims, who appeared at a time when the Majus (Zoroastrians) were taking the Jizyah (tax) from the Jews."
▪︎ Also, Abu Al-Aliyah, Ar-Rabi bin Anas and As-Suddi said that;
misery' used in the Ayah means, poverty.'
▪︎ Atiyah Al-Awfi said that;
misery' means, paying the tilth (tax).'
▪︎ In addition, Ad-Dahhak commented on Allah's statement,
وَبَأوُوْاْ بِغَضَبٍ مِّنَ اللَّهِ
and they drew on themselves the wrath of Allah,
"They deserved Allah's anger."
▪︎ Also, Ibn Jarir said that the Ayah means,
"They went back with the wrath.
▪︎ Similarly, Allah said,
إِنِّي أُرِيدُ أَن تَبُوءَ بِإِثْمِي وَإِثْمِكَ
(Verily, I intend to let you draw my sin on yourself as well as yours), (5:29) meaning,
You will end up carrying my, and your, mistakes instead of me'.
Thus, the meaning of the Ayah becomes,
They went back carrying Allah's anger; Allah's wrath descended on them; they deserved Allah's anger."'
Allah's statement,
ذَلِكَ بِأَنَّهُمْ كَانُواْ يَكْفُرُونَ بِأيَاتِ اللَّهِ وَيَقْتُلُونَ النَّبِيِّينَ بِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ
That was because they used to disbelieve in the Ayat (proofs, evidences, etc.) of Allah and killed the Prophets wrongfully.
means, "This is what We rewarded the Children of Israel with:humiliation and misery."
Allah's anger that descended on the Children of Israel was a part of the humiliation they earned, because of their defiance of the truth, disbelief in Allah's Ayat and belittling the carriers of Allah's Law i.e. the Prophets and their following. The Children of Israel rejected the Messengers and even killed them. Surely, there is no form of disbelief worse than disbelieving in Allah's Ayat and murdering the Prophets of Allah.
▪︎ Imam Ahmad recorded, Abdullah bin Mas`ud saying that the Messenger of Allah said,
The people who will receive the most torment on the Day of Resurrection are:a man who was killed by a Prophet or who killed a Prophet, an unjust ruler and one who mutilates (the dead).
📜 Tafsīr Ibn Kathīr رحمه الله
(Surah al-Baqarah (2):61)

Tafsir Ibn Kathir: Surah Al-Nahl Ayah 71
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
16:71 And Allah honored some of you over others with wealth and properties. Then, those who are so honored will by no means hand over their wealth and properties to those (captives of war) whom their right hands possess, so that they may be equal with them in that. Do they then deny the favor of Allah!
There is a Sign and a Blessing in Matters of People's Livelihood
Allah says,
And Allah honored some of you over others with wealth and properties. Then, those who are so honored will by no means hand over their wealth and properties to those (captives of war) whom their right hands possess, so that they may be equal with them in that.
Allah explains to the idolators the ignorance and disbelief involved in their claim that Allah has partners while also admitting that these partners are His servants. In their Talbiyah for Hajj, they used to say, "Here I am, there are no partners for You except Your own partner, You own him and everything he owns.''
Allah says, denouncing them: `You would not accept for your servant to have an equal share in your wealth, so how is it that Allah would accept His servant to be His equal in divinity and glory As Allah says elsewhere:
He sets forth a parable for you from yourselves: Do you have partners among those whom your right hands possess (i.e. your servant) to share as equals in the wealth We have granted you, those whom you fear as you fear each other! )30:28(
Al-Awfi reported that Ibn Abbas mentioned this Ayah, saying,
"Allah is saying - `If they did not want their servant to have a share with them in their wealth and wives, how can My servant have a share with Me in My power!'
Thus Allah says:
Do they then deny the favor of Allah! According to another report, Ibn Abbas said:
"How can they accept for Me that which they do not accept for themselves!''
Do they then deny the favor of Allah!
meaning, they assign to Allah a share of the tilth and cattle which He has created. They denied His blessings and associated others in worship with Him.
Al-Hasan Al-Basri said:
"Umar bin Al-Khattab wrote this letter to Abu Musa Al-Ash`ari:
`Be content with your provision in this world, for the Most Merciful has honored some of His servants over others in terms of provision as a test of both. The one who has been given plenty is being tested to see if he will give thanks to Allah and fulfill the duties which are his by virtue of his wealth...'''
It was reported by Ibn Abi Hatim.

Vocabulary from The Lord of the Rings
During my reread of The Lord of the Rings (see my main review!), I made a list of every word that I wanted to look up later on or otherwise remember.
I love doing this; no matter what I'm reading, be it a novel or a news article, the dictionary is never far away. I absolutely love learning words that are entirely new to me, learning additional denotations of words that I already know, learning more about the structure and etymology of words I know, refreshing myself on long-neglected words that I knew better in the past but have since gotten hazy on, and likewise being reminded of cool words that I haven't forgotten definitionally so much as simply forgotten (i.e. wouldn't have remembered to use them).
When I am writing my own fiction I do this even more! I am always turning to the dictionary to look up this or that, in addition to my copious research on interesting or relevant topics. This helps me create new words, ensure accurate usage of existing words, and find words at need.
Tolkien didn't try to be all that clever with his vocabulary; he simply commanded a large vocabulary; so most of his unfamiliar words can be inferred in situ. Uncommon are the words on this list that I didn't know anything about whatsoever. Mostly, they consist of new-to-me senses or forms, compound words I hadn't seen before, plant names I hadn't known about, and words that I wanted to refresh myself on or otherwise read up on (for etymology, etc.).
Here is the complete list as I wrote it, and in retrospect I wish I had added a bit more contextual information. Like, the word cot in there I know refers to some sense of "cot" that I hadn't known about, but the dictionary shows four additional categories of meanings beyond the most common one, three of which could conceivably be the sense Tolkien was referring to; I simply don't remember. Anyway!
Cornlands Haywards Mathoms Sow Tussocky Worriting Ride Meaning Spinney Ewers Ostler Habergeon Chalcedony Carcanet Weregild Glede Declaim Dolven Affray Swart Boles Tracery Descried Sward Whin Freshet Whortle-berry Irresolute Changeful Gaffer Naith Gore - land that lies like a spearhead between two rivers joining in a fork Drear Fosse Hythe Wolds Eyot Plashing Sloe Thrawn Wains Cresses Downs Darkling Rede Dwimmer Turves Besom Garth Dingle Fastness Corslets Coombe Rick Cot Postern Bight Provender Noisome Tamarisk and pungent terebinth Saxifrage Outfall (of lake) Gangrel Dappling Ancientry Ilex Misdoubt Wayworn Woodwright Launds Charnel Anigh Tilth Oast and Garner Fold and Byre Salver Embrasure Wain Greensward Coomb Fey Hardihood Upraised Belike Blench Vambrace Dromunds (ships?) Enheartened Recreant Brigand Trammel Worsted Noisome Ghylls Amidmost Rout Slavered Marges Palfrey Bier Evermind Trothplighted Weskit Gaffer Gammer Firth
Even without context you can infer some of these words (provided you don't already know them)—though be careful; the obvious path isn't always the correct one. Like evermind there at the end is the name of a flower that grows near graves. I inferred that this name, whether it was a preexisting word or a creation of Tolkien (it turned out to be the latter), was based off the idea of "never mind," i.e. the opposite of "forget about it." This is the correct meaning, but it doesn't travel through the "never" sense like I had thought; Tolkien derived it directly. (Or at least that's what the scholars say.)
My list has the benefit of being chronological to the story, so if you were to reference all of the words you would see that their distribution is highly clustered across the page count; Tolkien had different modes of writing, some of which were much likelier to use vocabulary that I would want to look up.
I'll be commenting on some of these words individually in dedicated posts in the days and perhaps weeks ahead. I kinda wanted to hold back this complete list till the end of all my musings...but offering it up front feels more honest.

M. Sage — Paradise Crick (RVNG Intl.)

Paradise Crick by M. Sage
Colorado-based ambient musician Matthew Sage draws influence from his everyday exploits to create magical sonic microcosms. Whether it’s sailing, exploring his former home city of Chicago or in the case of Paradise Crick camping, pleasurable pastimes form the core of Sage’s music. This sense of the quotidian muse calls to mind a quote from Yoko Ono: “Art is my life, and my life is art.” According to Sage, who is also an artist and an educator, art is both all around us and within us, so why not reflect on it, embrace it, and make something beautiful from it? If we all thought this way, the world would be a much happier place.
With Paradise Crick, Sage creates a reflection of the beauty and the chaos of our wilderness. With synths, field recordings, voice, and instrumentation, he builds songs that are organisms. They breathe and move, tangled within the underbrush. This is also his most visceral work, as he ornaments his typically ambient palette with an assortment of palpable shapes, colors, and textures. The record plays out like a journey, as Sage traverses a forested landscape, establishes a site to bed down, and then retraces his steps. He’s testing out his narrative chops with this album and has succeeded in weaving a captivating story.
The adventure begins with “Bendin’ In,” a frothy brew of digitalia, harmonica, and guitar. This is a bold opening statement, mimicking the cacophony of forest fauna and setting the stage for the melodic “Map to Here,” in which Sage finds a well-worn path through the scrub. The outright glistening “River Turns Woodley (for Frogman)” introduces beats, chimes, and a delicate descending autoharp melody before the synthesized chirrup of robotic crickets calls forth “Fire Keplo.” At the center of the album is the lovely sunset of “Tilth Dusk Drains,” and its counterpart “Tilth Dawn Rustles.” These two crepuscular pieces signify the start of Sage’s journey homeward, as he breaks camp and sets off to conclude his journey.
The second half of Paradise Crick feels almost uncanny and alien, as it becomes harder to discern the acoustic from the synthetic. It all becomes a blur. Sage is exhausted and ready to return to civilization. Someone once asked him in an interview where Paradise Crick truly resides. “In your imagination, hopefully. In your heart and in your memory,” he answered. Sage is indeed one with his art, and everything around him is a potential inspiration. What a wonderful ethos to have.

All this points back to the patrilineal conception of reproduction men have imposed upon the society; men are the actual originators of life, while women just mere incubators for it, a tilth into which a farmer places his seed.
Which just doesn’t make sense biologically, egg being largest human cell in the body in general and you need the entire woman in order to produce a child.
Woman/mother is not an incubator, she is not just only 'carrying' the child, she is making it from her own energy, cells and bones etc. creation of human life in the womb is not just a one and done, it’s in the process of being created in the woman’s womb.
A child is not “put” in the woman by a man. That saying is just pornographic and just perversion
I always hated the “pregnant with his child” like what you do mean “his child”, the saying “put a child in her” always been pornographic and oppressive to me. It’s in a way saying a woman is just a incubator or a machine for a specimen
