stuck in a loop ( with you ) 11/11.
read on ao3.
“What do you mean I-” The man's eyes widened. “Are you… have you lived through this day before?”
“Have you ?” Buck retorted.
The man raised an eyebrow. “I asked you first.”
“And I asked you second,” Buck countered.
He chuckled softly. “Okay, yeah. Eighteen times and counting.”
Buck couldn't tear his eyes away from him. It seemed like the feeling was mutual. Here they stood, in the middle of a street that was bustling with people, and it was like everyone else had disappeared, leaving them both in a world of their own.
“Me too,” Buck breathed out, a small smile pulling at the corner of his lips. “What's your name?”
“Tommy Kinard,” the man said, extending his hand.

Time loops bring up interesting questions because like, where is the line on everything resetting? And how does that affect the way the time loop affects you? You can't make progress on projects (or start new ones) because they'll just reset the next day. If your hair isn't growing, your nails aren't getting longer, than your body isn't changing either. Which means that what you can do in the time loop becomes incredibly limited. You can't increase your physical health. Can't gain muscle mass, improve your heart, increase your lung capacity, anything. You also can't learn new hobbies because you can't develop the muscle memory for them. You'll always be just as slow and shaky as the first time you picked it up.
There's not NOTHING to do, you can always learn languages or educate yourself on a variety of topics, but it's all mental. It has to be, because that's the torture of the time loop. That the only think you retain are your memories. You can't be changing from day to day because then you would be changing from the day before and that's noticeable to someone else. No one else notices. You're trapped in here, alone.
#time loop#time loop posting#i fucking love time loops dude i think theyre so fun#this is inspired by the last post i reblogged#because i think it would be so fun to pick up hobbies in a time loop but unfortunately there are practical limitations#or as practical as you can get when youre talking about time loops

January 9th.
You slept unusually well today. That's a good sign, right?
"Good morning, love! Your breakfast's already done, don't worry! I wouldn't want you to get tired before going to work…"
The food's good too. How nice of them.
…
"So, mx. Thompson, about your promotion… The higher-ups must really like you, because you've got it!"
You can't believe what you're hearing, this might be the best day of your life so far!
…
Tired yet happy, you come back home. As you fall asleep, you can't help but wonder what more the future holds for you…
January… 9th?
"Good morning, love! Your breakfast's already done, don't worry! I wouldn't want you to get tired before going to work…"
Odd. You feel like you've heard them say it before.
…
"So, mx. Thompson, about your promotion…"
Oh, yeah! You were really lucky to get it, weren't you?
"You… already knew? I told Sam to keep it a secret!"
Something is definitely wrong.
…January 9th.
"Good morning, love! Your breakfast's already done, don't worry! I wouldn't want you to get tired before going to work…"
You've definitely heard this before. Is someone messing with you?
…
"So, mx. Thompson, about your promotion…"
Okay, no. This has to be a prank. Where are the cameras?
"Cameras…? What are you talking about?"
She's recording you, isn't she? This isn't funny anymore.
"Is- is everything okay? …Here, just go home. I'll tell the boss."
January 9th.
Okay. Deep breaths. How do you exit the loop?
January 9th.
It didn't work.
January 9th.
It didn't WORK.
January 9th.
WHY ISN'T IT WORKING?
January 9th.
…fine. let's see if it stops by itself, then.
January 9th. January 9th. January 9th. January 9th.
It won't work. But there has to be SOME way to exit, right?
January 9th. January 9th. January 9th. January 9th.
Maybe there is no exit. Maybe… maybe the only way out is…
"WHAT THE FUCK‽"
"DID THEY JUST JUMP OUT? WHAT DO WE DO?"
January 9th.
That wasn't it either. Of course it wasn't.
"Good morning, love! Your—"
Breakfast. Right.
January 9th.
"How did you know?"
January 9th.
"Why did you do that?"
January 9th.
"Good morning, love!"
January 9th.
Interesting, isn't it?
January 9th.
Every time you roll a dice, the same numbers come up.
January 9th.
Every time someone talks to you, they say the same thing.
January 9th.
Like computer programs. You put in an input, and get out an output.
January 9th.
You just gotta figure out what the right output is.
January 9th… January 9th… January 9th… January 9th…
"Good morning, love!"
Your breakfast's already done, don't worry. They wouldn't want you to get tired before you go to work.
January 9th… January 9th… January 9th… January 9th…
"So, mx. Thompson, about your promotion…"
The higher ups must really like you, because you've got it.
January 9th.
How much time would it have been? Years, decades?
It doesn't really matter.
January 9th.
Why are you doing this again…? Just to see what will happen?
January 9th.
No. It's to find an exit.
January 9th.
But there is no exit.
January 9th.
There are only loops, after loops, after loops…
January 9th, January 9th, January 9th, January 9th.
January 9th, January 9th, January 9th, January 9th.
January 9th, January 9th, January 9th, January 9th.
January 9th, January 9th, January 9th, January 9th.
January 9th, January 9th, January 9th, January 9th.
…something changed.
January 10th 9TH.
"Honey… Why were you acting like that yesterday?"
"Good morning, love! Your breakfast's already done, don't worry!"
"Hey, are you listening to me? Don't walk away like that!"
"I wouldn't want you to get tired before going to work…"
January 13th 9TH!
"I'm just… really worried about them."
"Good morning, love! Your breakfast's already done, don't worry!"
January 16th 9TH!!
…This loop is a lost cause. You should skip to the next one.
Good thing the window's open. All it takes is one jump…
January 17th.
there is no next one.

time loop stories are so good bc they can be a great (read: evil) way to explore the cruelty of time in the context of grief/loss. like we all know on some level that the passage of time does help with grief: it is, at the very least, a means of measurable separation for what happened. except for anniversaries, which to me defy space and time to bring you back to the past. anniversaries are the place where the barrier between past and present thins etc etc. so: time loops are like, that concept of an anniversary on steroids. what if the passage of time changed nothing; what if you were continuously brought back to the hopelessness of your actions in the face of loss, and there was no way to leave, and any attempt to change your actions was futile because the loss already happened. you're just reliving the anniversary in a pocket of space-time that has you trapped. or whatever

Time loop, huh? I have a sci-fi parody series concept that's been on my back burner for years: "Ariel Rhoades, Girl Starship Captain."
One of my favorite episode ideas is when Ariel and her ship's officers spend their Christmas leave at the chief engineer's parents' house in Yorkshire.
The chief's parents live such a stultifyingly repetitive life that Ariel and the others become convinced they're in the middle of a time loop, and the chief has to convince them that, no, there's no time loop, his parents just do and say the exact same things over and over again, day after day. "Very tasty, dear... I'll do the locking up, dear."
The plan is, to pay this off in a later episode in which the team is caught in a REAL time loop, and the chief engineer is the only person mentally capable of navigating it, because he practically grew up in one.

i couldn't sleep and started thinking about time loops, as one does, and then came up with a very bad idea of a fiction podcast about a time loop. it's basically an audio diary of a person stuck in a time loop who just accepted that they're stuck. an episode comes out every day but nothing interesting really happens. they read. they meet new people. they meet the same people again. they try new hobbies. they watch every movie ever made about time loops. they go to museums. maybe they do some harmless crime sometimes. perhaps they get tired after a couple hundred days and try to figure out how to escape but it's not like they can actually do anything about it so they just keep living their day and talking about it into the microphone again and again and again

writing a time loop fic got me thinking about how a time loop episode could actually go. so here's my pitch so far:
Hen wakes up next to her Karen, they make breakfast together while Denny talks, asking them something benign like to go hang out with his friends after school. She goes through the day as usual. They have a few calls, experience and overcome a few hurdles, and then at the end of the day there's a four alarm fire. While inside the building, Hen ends up getting trapped and blacking out.
When she wakes up, she's in bed with Karen. In their kitchen, Denny asks her the same thing he did before. She's confused, especially as the day goes by and everything is exactly the same as before. That night, they're called to the fire again. She remembers the night before and tries to do something different but ends up blacking out all the same.
This repeats enough times that she's able to predict and prevent things going wrong on every call they go to. She asks Chimney and Karen for help since they're the movies / science experts and she comes to the conclusion that to escape the loop, she has to escape the fire.
At some point she starts to notice some glitches. Like she's at home, having the same conversation as she always has with Denny, and suddenly she's transported to the station. It's like time is folding in on itself. Her memories are mingling with reality, she sees her dad, Nia, the young girl she accidentally killed, her young self being shot. She's running out of time and she can feel it.
Eventually, she manages to save herself from that fire and walks out of the burning building right into a blinding light. She wakes up in the hospital, surrounded by Karen, Denny, and Mara that Chimney dropped off because she was worried for her mama. Hen learns that the day she's been living over and over did happen ( once ) and she did black out in that fire. Turns out, she had been hanging on between life and death all this time, and had to fight her way back to the land of the living.

I just thought of something… awful. Imagine being stuck in a time loop the day before a dnd session that you’ve been looking forward to for like a while. Maybe you just leveled up and got some feature you’ve been itching to unload on some poor schmuck goblin or you’re about to do something that the dm has been building up to for a while so you’re doing everything you can to get out of this damn time loop so you can finally play dnd with your online friends again
Only when you finally get out of the time loop and it’s tomorrow the dm has to rain check the session because something came up.
#time loop#time loop posting#dnd#ttrpg#i cannot think of a worse fate tbh#i would probably shatter like glass if that happened to me lol#scheduling conflicts amirite
