After Jowd turns himself in for Alma's murder, Cabanela confronts him in the interrogation room. Cabanela wants the truth and Jowd needs him to leave.

The resulting conversation doesn't go the way either of them want it to.

“I’ve seeeen you punch a fella clear across a rooom, Jowd. And now you’re claiming you kiiilled Alma.” Cabanela’s hands were shaking again. “You’re saaayin’ you murdered Alma, my friend and the looove of your life, and after murderin’ your wife you caaan’t even hit me like—” Jowd’s fist connected Cabanela’s jaw.

SPOILERS FOR THE END OF GHOST TRICK PLEASE DONT LOOK IF YOU HAVENT FINISHED THE GAME

Okay so. First off, what defines a Shakespearean tragic hero? Simply put, it’s a character that has a fatal flaw that dooms themself and everyone around them by virtue of having that flaw. Even without an easily identifiable flaw, a Shakespearean tragic hero usually ruins their own life by failing to communicate or act fast enough, and the main tragedy of most of his plays is just how preventable they are. This is especially the case with Romeo and Juliet, the main play I associate Yomiel with. In Romeo and Juliet, there are a lot of reasons that both of them die at the end, some factors out of their control, some caused by their own flaws. For example, the letter to Romeo telling him that Juliet was only faking her death not reaching Romeo fast enough wasn’t a factor either of them could control, but Romeo drinking the poison before waiting just a few more minutes before Juliet would wake up was. This is also seen in Yomiel’s character, with the meteorite being something out of his control, but his choice to take up his revenge plan being in his control. You’ll notice that the story of Yomiel and his fiancé is extremely similar to the end of Romeo and Juliet. Juliet fakes her death, Yomiel “dies” but doesn’t really die. Romeo kills himself right before Juliet wakes up, Sissel kills herself right before Yomiel finds her again. But while Juliet killed herself to follow Romeo, Yomiel didn’t have that option. And then he has a second parallel with Romeo and Juliet— the tragedy of Mercutio.

Mercutio is Romeo’s wisecracking best friend, and the first character to die in the play, changing the tone completely. He dies because Tybalt is antagonizing Romeo, and Romeo won’t agree to a duel, so Mercutio does it instead. Romeo doesn’t want a fight because Tybalt is Juliet’s cousin and thus somewhat family to him, and dives between the two, upon which Tybalt ducks his sword under Romeo’s arm and stabs Mercutio, who dies of the injury. The parallel here isn’t as one to one as it is with the death of Romeo and Juliet, but Yomiel, while trying to get Lynne accused of murder by manipulating her to make her shoot his corpse, misses his first shot and hits his only friend, his cat Sissel, named after his late fiancé. This sort of circumstance of trying to do a thing to further your own goals and instead creating a tragedy for yourself is a staple of Shakespearean tragedies, tying back to the idea that the thing that makes it so tragic in the first place is how preventable it is. Yomiel’s whole villainous arc is a string of highly preventable tragedies— if Cabanela hadn’t gone so hard on him or left his gun, he wouldn’t have held Lynne hostage. If he didn’t hold Lynne hostage, he wouldn’t have been struck by the meteor. If he wasn’t struck by the meteor, his fiancé wouldn’t have committed suicide. If his fiancé didn’t commit suicide, he wouldn’t have wanted revenge. If he didn’t want revenge, he wouldn’t have shot Sissel on accident. If anything in that chain of events hadn’t happened, none of his personal tragedies would have occurred.

However, he differs from a Shakespearean tragic hero in a very important way— Shakespearen heroes die at the end. They either take their own life or are killed before they can do so. But Yomiel can’t die. I’m sure he certainly wanted to, after everything, (I mean, he had to know that bullets don’t affect him somehow) but that avenue was literally impossible for him.

So he puts on a charade. He dresses himself up as an evil mastermind, the puppeteer running the show and ruining lives and enjoying it. But he doesn’t enjoy it, not really. After all, if he did, he would have killed Lynne in the submarine as it sank. He tries to pretend he’s a villain, but he’s just a man toyed with by fate. After all, tragic heroes are still heroes. He’s not a villain, because really the only thing he wants is to live a normal life and then die. This is why he’s so willing to sacrifice himself at the end— he’s playing out the end of a tragic hero’s story, which is to say, their death. But the story says no, you’re not done yet. You’ve made mistakes and you don’t think you deserve to live but you will live nonetheless, because how else will you grow? How else will you make meaningful change and be a better person, live with all the consequences of living, and then die surrounded by the people you love? It’s not a question of “does he deserve this”, it’s a question of “don’t we all deserve this?” After all, look at how many stories people write where Romeo and Juliet are happy. Tragic heroes are compelling because tragedy is the truth of life. But there is beauty in life to, and there’s a wonderful thing Shakespeare never wrote about, which is how it is to experience a tragedy and continue living on.
