First 3D visualization of an aluminum nanocomposite for the auto industry
Manufacturing cars with strong, lightweight aluminum alloys rather than steel could improve fuel efficiency and extend electric vehicle range, but the material's instability at high temperatures has held the alloys back from widespread adoption. Creating tiny, reinforcing particles of titanium carbide (TiC) directly inside of molten aluminum results in a stronger, more temperature resistant aluminum-based material called a metal matrix nanocomposite. Up to this point, researchers have not understood how these nanoparticles form, or how they interact with other features in the microstructure, hindering production of the material on an industrial scale.

the machine issue was, indeed, not my fault
someone turned the machines off without telling the guy who runs the shop so it thought the C axis was rotated when it wasn’t, so when it started the new operation, it took the wrong position and thought it was the right one

My drones adore some good mech pilot erotica. Stories of cute women hooked into hulking metal machines of death, feeling every movement and kill reform into intoxicating pleasure as they obey their handlers and follow their orders. The care and intimacy that would follow after a debrief. The mechs that would reciprocate and lock their pilots in titanium carbide bondage and rail them senseless. These stories spun sweet fantasies in their minds, but little did they realise how close these fantasies were to their realities.
Last night, we had a little game night in the Dollhouse and rallied around to play some Helldivers and spread democracy. I gathered the drones together and activated their Arousal Energy Retention Systems but with a cruel 15% arousal limit. They moaned in protest, but then I told them why. I issued each drone a command: each kill, each resource secured, each stratagem called, each objective secured, each mission completed would give them sweet sexual pleasure. If they completed the campaign, I would discharge their system and give them their well-earned climax.
When the first drone called in an orbital barrage on an outpost, she felt it. Each thump of the 120mm cannon sent pleasure across her body. The euphoria would hit, but then the frustration would swell in its wake... Only 3 kills... The Fabricator was still standing... The itch grew... The ache blossomed... She needed more...
Every failure became a hard lesson: no success, no pleasure.
So shots became deadlier. Enemy dropships would begin to fall upon arrival. Each drone would push deeper into enemy territory, dodging mines, cannons, fire, in the hopes it would get the orbital cannon beacon closer to the enemy to gain maximum efficiency of each blast. One by one, they all began to fall in line in the pursuit of the reward for their obedience. Addressing me as Ma'am, requesting permission to call in airstrikes and bombardments, feeling a bucking of their knees when I praised them.
We would finish our first campaign and I offered to discharge their AERSes but they declined. They wanted more... they needed more... so being the good Mother Controller I am, we descended into hell one more time.
Their strategies adapted, using undetonated nukes to eliminate more enemies in one go. Their support weapons became bigger, faster. They would synchronise barrages, align airstrikes, cover each other with suppressive fire. They are such good drones, but they became perfect Helldrones, completing yet another campaign faster than the last.
The sounds they made when I discharged their systems, as the memories of every bullet, every shell, every blast came flooding back, were beautiful. They whimpered, moaned, as they were overwhelmed with the pleasure their obedience earned. Their minds fell to the hiss of static and white noise as the orgasm ripped through their bodies. One of them even made the sweetest mess in her panties from her performance.
After whimpered thanks, we had some aftercare in which each drone said the same thing: they can't wait to do it again.

Ceramics: Titanium carbide
A well-known material, titanium carbide is a refractory ceramic, extremely hard and capable of withstanding high temperatures, among many other advantageous properties. A binary compound, it is the only carbide in the titanium-carbon system. It’s composition is equal parts titanium and carbon by atomic percent (crystal structure shown above, with the atoms not to scale) but by weight percent the material is around 80% titanium. The crystal structure is face centered cubic, and the Mohs hardness of the material is between 9-9.5.
Titanium carbide can be synthesized in a number of ways, including the reduction of carbon black with titanium oxide, direct carbonization of titanium powder, chemical vapor deposition, the blast impact method (mixing titanium dioxide powder and carbon powder), and ball milling, among other techniques. It does occur in nature, but only rarely, in the form of the mineral khamrabaevite.
Applications of this ceramic rely mainly on the first two properties mentioned: its hardness, and its temperature resistance. Its addition to cutting tools takes advantage of the former, while its addition to crucibles takes advantage of the latter. In addition to these uses, titanium carbide is also used in cermets (composites made of ceramics and metals), as abrasion resistant coatings on tools, and as heat shield coatings in spacecraft.

"Dark Magic"
*Rubbing temples*
Paolini never really defines dark magic in Inheritance Cycle. It's most frequently associated with Shades and Galbatorix. Durza taught Galbatorix 'dark magics' before he went on his traitorous rampage. Durza uses 'dark magics' to give Eragon his curse (??? look I'm still not fully clear on wtf Eragon's seizures were, we could go into a full side tangent rant on this but I digress) and used it in a variety of other ways. There's scattered mentions of 'dark magic' throughout the books beyond these.
But we are never told, as far as I am aware, about what exactly it is. What we know of magic is that it is typically shaped through use of the Ancient Language, some creatures, like dragons, can effect the world through the use of instinctive magic, and that magic in other cases and places just appears in the world (floating rocks, etc, though come to think of it no wait stop sciencing).
In this TED Talk I wi– I'm kidding. We're here to talk about MIC adaptations again.
MIC has always been a bit of a science experiment. In the later books we can see Paolini really using science to explain what happens when Eragon or others craft certain spells. Hell, he even uses coding in Murtagh, which made me grin a bit. I'm awful at it but If/Then statements are coding 101 kinda things. But a lot of the time we are left in the dark (pun somewhat intended) on how certain things work.
I (have I??) explain some things via science/biology/etc in MIC. Elves bones have to be stronger to resist their innate strength or else they'd shatter their skeletons every time then did something with force, so I adapted the Spartan-III augmentations of Titanium Carbide replacing the typical materials of calcium and whatnot. There's a weird bit of their diet that changes because of that. I have a few others but that's the main one I think I spent ages going over in my head.
So what is 'dark magic?' How do we explain it scientifically, or in context of the mix of language and science that the IC magic system is based off of?
WELL!
I just realized I don't remember what I was LANGUAGE!
RIGHT! WHY DID I TALK ABOUT SCIENCE?!
I am currently writing a story about Eragon's seizures and what people are doing to see about finding a cure. This requires me to look at dark magic. And since we have no canon idea of if dark magic would draw from the same language as 'regular' magic, making it just...regular magic with inherently dark motives, which is boring, I decided to change it up a bit.
The Ancient Language is, well, ancient. One day I will spell Language properly without autocorrect but here we are. Although AL (it is not today) is considered locked in, I wouldn't be surprised if there were other languages and/or dialects of AL. The dwarves and the dragons are the 'true' inhabitants of Alagäesia (were-creatures?? more like where did they come from but again, I digress)–
and you know what I just read the Ancient Language and Grey Folk pages on the wiki and now I'm kinda mad bUT I'M DOING WHAT I'M DOING ANYWAY.
Long story short: there are several different dialects of AL, influenced by a lot of different factors. The dark magic Ancient Language dialect was created by shades and other malevolent creatures w/ sentience and magic usage, and is purposefully absolutely fucking convoluted, varied and jumbled with lots of uuuuh what's the word influence fuck I just had it
the caster can choose and mix and match their syntax and structure at will. to prevent their curses from being undone unless you were present during the casting and know almost word for word what was said and used for the curse/spell. The dragon's magic that undid Eragon's curse was basically like a cleanse and used dragon's instinctive world weave magic to rewrite Eragon enough that he sorta DNA mixed (sorry Paolini, in MIC we do get some fun DNA rewriting because Ket wants the science....mmm....science......) with elf code and a little bit of dragon code (possibly, I'm a little on unsure on this, elves are already a mix of their original base with dragon code due to the orignal bond and I'M GETTING OFF TOPIC AGAIN) and he became different enough that the curse no longer worked and because he was uh...well, he was kinda factory reset. It wiped any and all spells attached to his body.
uh
okay. I...think I made my point. I'm...I'm sorry I just completely lost my train of thought after 'attached to his body.'
um.
Have a good day, I guess.

Quick Roll Table for Lancer NPCs
Starting off with IPS-N, for when you need to populate a rickety O'Neil cylinder with salty cosmonauts. 1. IPS-N Marine: Nearly two and a half meters tall and loaded with myolace, endodermal NxRA integuments, and titanium-carbide osteoplate. Putting her in a hardsuit only makes her more of a terror in close quarters. She treats her squadmates like a mother bear treats her cubs and takes no shit when it comes to their safety, whether that be from the enemy or IPS-N suits. With any luck, she’ll include you in her pack too. 2. IPS-N Subline Jockey: They’re twitchy as all hell and just can’t seem to sit still. Quite short despite a lifetime in space, and always wears their truncated environmental filter system. They’ve got an impeccable record sitting in the casque of a Walleye; if you need a flak screen penetrated or a patrol cutter outran, they’re the one to call. Willing to fly anyone or anything anywhere for a surprisingly generous rate, no questions asked.
3. IPS-N Suit: Totally unflappable and results driven, station deckhands have taken to calling them ‘Rocky’ for their stone-cold demeanor. One wouldn’t expect someone as relatively unassuming as them to hold the levers of military and civilian procurement in the palm of their hand. Despite the strict IPS-N regs on employing freelancers, they’re willing to take all comers for work. Be absolutely sure you don’t disappoint.  4. IPS-N Mechanic: As salty as any cosmonaut comes, and has little patience for those who don’t know what they’re doing or waste his time. Carries an entire toolbox, fusion torch and all, inside an oversized and very rusty mechanical arm. Some say that he can put a NLS drive back together with his eyes closed. Does repair work on the cheap, but will make you stay and watch him. Take notes, he’ll quiz you once he’s done. 5. IPS-N Miner: A persistent ray of sunshine despite spending all of her time working in deep-core nickel-iron asteroid mines. She lost all of her limbs and an eye doing her job. IPS-N set her up with some second-rate cybernetics, clunky, poorly neuro-tuned, and constantly belching steam. They still expect her to work and pay them back. She quietly wishes she could hurt the company very badly for putting her in this situation. 6. IPS-N Captain: Older than most everyone on the station, doesn't look a day over 65 thanks to the vagaries of nearlight travel, stasis-sleep, and a healthy diet of Ispahsalari cigars and Ras Shamran whiskey. Rough around the edges, with a low brow sense of humor befitting of an old salt cosmonaut. If you can get past both those, you'll find that he's well worth his weight in O2, knows the best deck-teks and merchants on the station on a first name basis

what is your favorite chemical and which touhou would you kin assign it?
i don't think chemicals have deep mental connections to fictional characters, so i wouldn't kin assign any character to any chemical. that said, i can tell you my favorite chemical and the touhou i think fits it best!
or at least i could, but asking a chemist their favorite chemical is like asking a meteorologist their favorite cloud. i'll give you an unordered list of five faves and their touhous.
Carbon tetrachloride. Terrible for absolutely everyone, it's highly carcinogenic, hepatotoxic, mildly neurotoxic, and depletes the ozone layer. However, it was used for many years as a refrigerant, dry cleaning agent, and fire extinguisher, because it's inert and has a convenient boiling point. It was also used as a NMR solvent for many years because it doesn't have any hydrogen atoms, and therefore won't interfere with the hydrogen spectrum of your analyte molecule. Nowadays, though, deuterated compounds are much more common, so those are used as solvents instead (deuterium has a different gyromagnetic ratio to hydrogen). Common ones are deuterated chloroform, deuterated dimethylsulfoxide, and heavy water. The touhou who I think fits this best is Eirin. She's very helpful and has a number of unique skills you might want to go to her for, but thanks to her crap personality and her vague disregard for life the consequences are likely to outweigh the benefits of her lending her your aid.
Tungsten carbide (Ni-alloyed). What can I say about this guy that hundreds of others haven't already said? It's extremely hard, still fairly good at not cracking under pressure, and- here's the awesome thing- entirely non-magnetic. If you want to service anything in a room with several dozen Teslas of magnetic field strength running around and your titanium or aluminum bronze tools are stripping because some guy doesn't know that screws only need to be so tight, tungsten carbide is your guy. Just be careful to only use the Ni alloy- Co and Fe are obviously ferromagnetic. The touhou which this fits best is Reimu, because it'll do basically anything in its purview with a little grumbling, but keeping it happy is quite expensive.
Acetone. It's not a universal solvent, but it's cheap as hell and useful for practically anything that soap won't get. Its only problem as a household cleaner is that it's so good at dissolving things it'll also partially dissolve most plastics, but it's such a friend in the lab (and on hard surfaces) that I'll not dock it points. The touhou that this best fits is Marisa. Ordinary, applicable to practically any situation, but not always the best at it. Still, helpful practically everywhere.
Dimethyl mercury. King of reminding you that just because you work in an analysis lab doesn't mean you don't have to practice lab safety (though the chloroform really should do that already.) If you're unaware, dimethyl mercury killed a prodigious toxicologist and NMR spectroscopist at Dartmouth way back in the day. She was trying to create a standard to measure frequencies against, you see, but it got on her glove. At the time, the permeability of dimethyl mercury through polymers was not well known, so she and her colleagues assumed that as she had been wearing gloves, she would be fine. However, nowadays we know that the only gloves suitable for wearing when one works with dimethyl mercury are Silver Shield type. By the time she found out she had mercury poisoning, unfortunately, she didn't respond to chelation therapy and passed away. The touhous (plural) that this chemical is best represented by are the entire Hifuu Club. If you poke around in unknown places, you may discover useful and fascinating things (such as ways to treat mercury-contaminated water) but because these things are unknown, there's always the possibility that you poke around a bit too far and never come back.
[Polymer redacted so I don't doxx myself for being in one of three labs that works on it]. The touhou that this is best represented by is Nue Houjuu, for the transformation powers and difficulty of understanding it.

Part 1
“Anon, men,” the general shouts. “We has't arriv'd at the base of Mt.  Ebott!”
I crane my neck to try and see past the soldier in front of me. I’m not only the shortest knight in the Royal Army, but also the only female.
“In 'rd'r to reacheth the oth'r side, we might not but wend ov'r the mountain,” the general continues. “To maketh passage saf'r, we shalt did split into squadrons.  Squadron leadeth'rs, thee knowest who is't thou art.  Organizeth thy men and ascend the mountain at which hour eft.”
I begin to hear shouting as the squadron leaders organize their men. My squadron leader grabs my shoulder to ensure I won’t get left behind. He’s really the only one who respects me.
“Lieutenant Carpys, thee shall beest behind me as we ascend the mountain.  We doth not wanteth our only mage to beest hath left behind, anon doth we?”
“No sir, we doth not.”
After Sergeant Quelsh, my squadron leader, organizes the rest of the squadron, we begin the ascent. It takes a little over three weeks.
We reach a small cave and are almost immediately ambushed by a group of monsters who escaped their prison under the mountain.
Some of us fight back because, well, these are monsters, and monsters should either be dead or trapped under the mountain, and others fight back out of self defense.
I'm the only one who doesn't fight back.
I'm the last one standing.
The remaining monsters advance toward me.
I fall down a hole whilst trying to escape.
As I fall, pain shoots up through my entire body. I shout in agony, and my voice seems to cut out every ¼ second.
I hit the ground with a loud thud, my titanium-plated tungsten carbide armor absorbing most of the impact.
I lie unconscious for what feels like forever. When I eventually come to, I find each plate of my armor scattered across the spacious room. The leather straps that hold the plates together are also strewn about.
