people can complain all they want about dina and ellie’s power dynamic, i know in my lesbian heart it makes perfect sense.

masculinity does not necessarily equal power over others. for joel, it did. for joel, it meant making the decisions, being in charge. it’s a role he never allowed himself to grow out of, he literally doesn’t have an identity outside of being a protector. ellie, in her masculinity, contrasts joel, reinforcing that theme of each generation doing just a bit better than their elders.

we already know dina and ellie’s dynamic in s2 is an inversion of joel and ellie’s dynamic in s1, but it’s not just bout whose more serious and whose more playful. joel wants ellie to listen to him, allow herself to be taken care of, while ellie wants dina to act as her equal, and be in control just as much as her. by letting dina take the reins often, she is giving to dina what she felt joel denied her—mutual respect. she is refusing to agree what joel was never able to truly let go of: that allowing someone else power diminishes one’s own. joel was doing better than his father by shutting out all that could hurt his loved ones (his sense of guilt, his trust in others, etc.). now, ellie is doing better than joel by allowing someone in to fight alongside with her :’).

(oh and on the topic of gender and masculinity, this femme right here can personally confirm there are countless mascs and butches who want nothing more than for me to tell them what to do LMAO. ellie isn’t incompetent, she’s just a dyke.) (and we love her for that.)
