TNBC showerthought #10: Sally is her own Doll
((OOC: So I saw because of @tnbc-thoughtsandheadcanons that there's a new comic coming out that's a 'what if' if Sally had been the one to find the holiday doors and not Jack. I'll admit the idea intrigues me...but I'm a little cautious.
Now's not the time to go into it but I get a little peeved with how Disney is utilizing fan-fic ideas and concepts like AUs and mecha crossovers in their spinoff material. But, besides that fear, I'm cautious for another reason. I'm noticing a lot more stuff trying to feature Sally more and more. While I like that, I'm also kind of annoyed with it.
Among the many problems I have with "Long Live the Pumpkin Queen", one of them is I feel like they're trying to make Sally more of a female alt to Jack, rather than her own unique character. LLTPQ had to retcon Sally into being a princess from another kingdom the way Jack is already a 'King'. Which, to ME is deeply insulting.
Part of what makes Sally impressive is that she is 'just' a ragdoll. She was created, not born or 'died', and she also happens to be smarter than her creator and even the king of her town. There doesn't need to be some explanation for her being the way she is and that's what's cool about her. It's very, Ozian, for lack of a better word. It's such a cute idea of an inanimate-object-brought-to-life becoming a ruler and being thought of as their own person. It's cute and even a little empowering in a way.
While I'm not scared that this new comic will retcon anything like LLTPQ did (really, it's supposed to, given that it's an AU), I'm still worried that this new comic will give Sally the exact same reaction Jack has to Christmas and have the plot of the movie try and go on but with Sally in Jack's place...and I really hope that's not what happens.
Sally is not Jack. That's what's adorable about her. That's what we the audience love about her and that's what Jack falls in love with her at the end for. Sally wouldn't do the things Jack does with Christmas because Sally is her own person and her situation and social status is different than Jack.
AUs of this kind really kind of put into perspective the kind of characters you're working/messing with. The whole reason the story of TNBC happens at all is because Jack is the kind of person he is while he finds Christmas; extroverted, peppy, self-absorbed, ostentatious and manic depressive. Jack is the king and everybody wants his approval and attention even if he thinks no one actually listens to him. The only reason Halloween ends up doing Christmas at all is because Jack is the king and is used to doing what he wants and getting his citizens in on his plans.
If Sally finds Christmas Town or any other holiday world and comes to her own self-discovery, she better not go back and try and tell the people of Halloween about it. Sally's whole deal in the first half of the movie is she doesn't want to live with Dr. Fink; she's trying to escape. She'd probably stay in the Holiday worlds because she has no one back home desperately looking for her besides Dr. Fink. She wants to be away. If anything she has a way better reason than Jack or anyone else in town to run away. And, if Dr. Fink did make a big deal and ask people to help him look and then THAT's how Halloween first finds Christmas-- that would be something. I'd really like to see an alt. Jally-romance take that direction; Jack starts a search party for Dr. Fink's missing secretary he's seen once or twice, he follows a party personally to the outskirts of Halloween land, finds the doors and Sally and SHE'S the one to introduce HIM to the other holiday worlds. That'd be so cool!
tl;dr: I hope the 'what if' comic has Sally functionally going on her own journey and being a different character and not her functionally going through the beats of the story Jack did but just Sally in place of Jack. Sally is not Jack.

Malleus being in the TNBC and Endless Halloween event has me rather intrigued.
His connection with ghosts is interesting when you think about it.
In fact, Lilia’s connection also adds into it. Lilia went to the spiritual realm before returning.
And now we have Malleus’s connection to them.
In Endless Halloween, it was about letting the ghosts enjoy more time in twst.
In TNBC, it was about a past character meeting the present cast. About someone who so tied into his olden ways being changed.
Makes you wonder, if a ghost from the past will come and haunt the narrative in main story.
Someone so stuck in olden times who will need to change. Because they can’t move past it.
And in a way, we already have that don’t we. Meleanor hated humans and didn’t change her views even until her death. Humans feared the fae and wanted their lands which led to wars for centuries even though some wanted change it wasn’t the right time for it.
But now through Lilia’s teachings, we see how Malleus and Silver are trying to bridge that gap during present times. Sebek is also an example of how that gap has been bridged.
But it’s interesting, how we have literal ghosts haunting the narrative. Tactile ones nonetheless. No matter how temporary.
Makes you wonder if we’ll be seeing other literal ghosts again? And if they are playing a part in the story.
(We already had one in book 7, haven’t we? For all intents and purposes, KOD is one. And then we also see how similar Malleus’ OB dragon is to his mother…and of course, there’s the senate…)
The role of ghosts are interesting to me, there seems to be more to them through the little hints twst shows us.
And we know that ghosts can posses bodies…makes you wonder, has any of the cast been possessed? And is it limited to living people only? Because Silver’s ring is not a person nor “living”
It just adds onto the story’s mysteries. Are the OBs, in any way, possessed? Anyone else in the cast?
When the haunting of the narrative becomes literal 😅😂

So I've been thinking about Oogie Boogie, but mostly his shadow and how it works.
Going by the beginning of the movie, the "shadow on the moon at night" is like an extension of him he uses to terrorize people in their dreams to fill them to "the brim with fright".
Tumblr media
Now, given Disney's track record with shadows, I'd wager it works similar to them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An animated shadow of his but he can willingly detach it (somehow) to screw with people in their dreams.
Since its implied that it's also him, (or at least has the same voice and personality), I'm willing to bet he has full control over it, unlike Dr. Facilier and Peter Pan's shadows.
Which are just separate entities with their own personalities when you watch their respective movies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Idk, this is just my analysis based on what I'm observing in the movies. Pretty sure this is what the intention was, but I still wanted to get my thoughts out there.

Although I'm always kind of saddened by the fact that we never got the plot twist of Doctor Finkelstein secretly being the Oogie Boogie, I feel like it was also for the best, probably?
In a way, the character became more iconic due to him not having any twists attached; if the original idea would have gone through, I doubt Oogie would have popped up as much in other Disney media, as the extra layer of complexity provided by him also being the alter-ego of the Doctor would have created issues when translating the character:
Oogie Boogie is a pretty easy villain to slap on whatever the hell you want and still be functional and charming; his simplicity makes him incredibly versatile to whatever the story needs him to do, you need to look no further than Kingdom Hearts to see what I mean.
Plus, Oogie already functions pretty well as a foil to Jack, being someone who overindulges in his interests and desires (similar to Jack, but way more overtuned), lacking the comprehension skills to understand what others are talking about (like Jack), as how is evidenced in his song, and so on and so forth.
At least, you can say that in the end the original idea for Oogie Boogie was reutilized in Wreck-It Ralph, where it was much more fitting anyway.

Anyway sorry again for asking I also love your analysis and headcanons. Sorry for any mistakes english is not my first language hi from Argentina (also if you haven't done you should watch the movie in spanish I always LOVED their voices)
Tumblr media
Hi there! My 18+ TNBC fanfic, 'Vehement', was taken down on all fanfic sites some time ago, AO3 being the last it was on. I was just never really happy with the fic to begin with, and a review at the time reminded me of all of its issues and that's when I decided to finally take it off its last site. I don't plan on re-publishing it anytime soon, but I'd like to rewrite the story at some point.
If you *reeaaallyy* want to read it again, you can DM me and I'll give you a link to the story, all I ask is that you DON'T share it around. This applies to my followers and anyone who's interested in reading it -- if I find it's been shared or posted anywhere then I'll stop sharing the link, but so far everything's been good.
Also, I really need to watch TNBC in other languages! I'm particularly interested in the French and Italian versions. I'll check out the Spanish one while I'm at it!

Proteomics Landscape of Triple-Negative Apocrine Breast Carcinoma Reveals Molecular Mechanisms of Tumorigenesis and Characteristics of Chemo-insensitivity
Triple-negative apocrine breast carcinoma (TNAC) is a rare type of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) characterized by apocrine morphology. Due to its low clinical incidence, TNAC has not been well studied at the molecular level in terms of cellular mechanisms of tumorigenesis and treatment response. In this study, we collected formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples from 31 patients diagnosed with invasive TNAC. Mass spectrometry analysis and whole-exome sequencing were performed to systematically construct the proteome and mutation landscape of the TNAC. Comparing ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), invasive, and adjacent normal tissues, we observed increased cadherin binding and ligase activity during tumorigenesis, heightened extracellular matrix signaling at tumor initiation, and elevated GTPase activity during tumor progression. Besides, we discovered genes such as C3 and COL18A1 enriched in somatic mutations are also significantly dysregulated in invasive TNAC. Additionally, by assessing biopsies before neo-adjacent chemotherapy, we provided molecular evidence supporting clinical observations of chemotherapy insensitivity in TNAC patients. We further identified a protein panel (CAPN1, CORO1B, HK1, RAP1B, and VPS4B) differentiating TNAC from non-apocrine TNBC, which could potentially serve as diagnostic markers. Taken together, this study represents the first large-scale proteomics analysis of TNAC and may provide guidance on decisions regarding the chemotherapy treatment of TNAC patients. http://dlvr.it/TBJLJW

TNBC Shower Thought: Comparing the worst to best TNBC posters
((OOC:
I know how much you love my pedanticy-pedantics about unimportant TNBC details and reviews. Or, at least, I think you like em and none of you have told me to can it yet...
So I figured in the spirit of that and Christmas season, why not compare some of Nightmare Before Christmas's movie posters? Comparing posters and covers is a fun activity for me. There different kinds of posters and cover art throughout the years for all sorts of things that are great at subtly, creativity, minimalism or just being a good cover overall. One day I hope to compare some of the Walt Disney features' many fantastic poser art for their films, but for now lets stick to Nightmare.
I'm starting from the bottom to work my way up into the GREAT stuff. Lets not waste anymore time...
Tumblr media
This is easily the worst cover for the film and what I hate is that it's the most current cover. I already hate when they try to make the clipart we're used to all shaded and three dimensional-like, but just...LOOK AT THIS?!?!
Who thought THIS looked good? Honestly?!? The characters are all way too colorful and smooth and it's plastered on top of the film cel like it fits together...it DOESN'T!!!
Next we have the 2008 DVD cover.
I'll try not too be too harsh on this one in case anyone here grew up with it...but I'm sorry I am so not a fan. It tells you nothing about the film and is more of that '3D-ish take on the og lineart that looks ugly to me.
Tumblr media
The 2023 30th anniversary art is...fine?
Like there's nothing WRONG with it, but it feels incrediblly lackluster compared to some of the screen-capped and colored up artwork I've seen on things like T-Shirts and even fan made posters.
Also, and I hope this ISN'T true, it's so basic I worry that it at some point was made by or with AI or at least with an artist who wasn't paid that much in a short amount of time. Like, the composition is all there: Sally and Jack in the forground, Lock, Shock and Barrel under them and above the title, Oogie in the moon behind them all...but I don't know why they didn't do something really cool like make all the intricate purple and blue-shapes into silhouettes of the other characters and other iconic imagery or scenes?
Tumblr media
Look at how...ALONE Zero feels off the side there!!
This is another older image I remember on the back of my VHS growing up, though I never knew it was used for an actual cover of the movie.
It does INFINITELY look better than the first shaded-lineart image (this was done in the 90s...how...) but while I love the composition of Jack and Sally and them walking around in Christmas Town, I never liked the colors of the image at all.
Tumblr media
I also never got why Lock, Shock and Barrel are there, chillin and watching them like they're Belle and Beast and they're Beasts' servants trying to wingman for him...Where's Zero? Everyone knows HE'S jack's wingman.
This is an image I found on IMDB that took my by surprise. To be honest I have no clue if it's an actual film poster or a fan poster, but I like the composition of it all as a Universal Horror film poster. Doesn't work as well as Frankenweenie, but still...
Tumblr media
And now, the classic. The one you most certainly grew up seeing everywhere or around the place regarding this movie in the 90s or 20s. It's the cover to the soundtrack and VHS I had. This is obviously the most famous version.
Tumblr media
But there's also this slightly different version with Jack's arms in a different pose 'to receipt Shakespearean quotation'. This is the same version of the cover used on our "The Film, the Art and the Vision" book as well.
Tumblr media
But, for my own PERSONAL favorite cover of the film (even if it's just a simple photoshop), I have to go with the original 'special edition' DVD my sister and I still have.
Somehow Sally just being on the spiral hill next to Jack and holding his hand is so sweet and doesn't feel like the cheap and quick edit it is. I think it's because, despite being a reference to the scene I never saw this cover as directly portraying "Jack's Lament", that this was Jack having a nice moment of peace after the events of the films somehow and waxing his poetics in reference to the film...so somehow the idea of Sally coming up to join him in that with his other arm let out to her is ADORABLE.
Tumblr media
Here's a different version on a French DVD.
Tumblr media
Lastly, since it does technically count as a poster for the movie itself, I'd be remissed not to mention Nightmare Before Christmas 3D's poster. This this was great back in the day and it's still great now. I'm fairly certain they just photoshopped stills and photos of puppets themselves but y'see kids- THIS vvvv
Tumblr media
This is how you photoshop. Everyone has a unique face and pose. Everyone's doing something you think that character would be doing if they were going to MT3K their own film (Sally that's rude!) and they're all drenched in theater accurate lighting. That's more like it!! Besides Oogie being smol, this is the perfect poster to catch the eye of a rerelease!
Hope you enjoyed!

That's the problem with a lot of bad media analysis.
It's still operating on a "my opinion > everyone else's opinion and perspective", despite claiming to be impartial and accademic, so mouthbreathers use the air of media criticism as a way to tout their fandumb+opinions as fact rather than actually look into the media their engaging with, accepting all truths about it.
Some people have a better eye for this than others; Princess Weekes and Hbomber generally have a better 'clap back' way of stating their opinion but then ALSO stating the objective opinion of their argument....but their imitators are kind of lost in the "#mike-drop" mentality of it all any not only abuse the language needed to make important points, but also use that on anything that threatens their viewpoint. I've felt that way about Ayy Lmao for a long time-
Calling out media or just pointing out the problematicisms in, even stuff you enjoy, isn't going to hurt you. I can be very harsh in regards to Disney, TNBC, Venture Bros and Hadestown, which are all properties I love, and find for you TONS of reviews pointing out what's problematic/badly written/offensive about it. I genuinely want the things I love to be looked and broken down, sometimes on topics I can't even speak for myself like TooManyCrowns' Princess and the Frog analysis, and talked about the good and the bad. Extending that perspective to stuff you love every bit as much as stuff you hate, be it as a fan or critic, should be seen as a positive thing and not an attack in any means.
Anti vs Profandom: Dawn of Justice is a glorified fandom debate among people who really aren't that good at analysis trying to one-up and bury eachother. Sometimes they use the positivity-culture based "end cringe! let people liek things" and sometimes they'll use ernest but harsh media crit to do this- either way, it's cultural elitism, absolutism and fandom apathy all rolled into one. It's killing us and our fandoms.
"As someone who watches horror movies -- and also you know, movies at all -- I always get a laugh out of that one."
Yeah that's the vibe I personally get from a lot of antis (and honestly a lot of people who are chronically online): they don't consume a lot of media, and if they do they do so uncritically. They tend to just stick to the few things they know they like.
- skibidi toilet anon
I seriously think that's what constitutes acceptable media in their eyes...enjoyable and completely, 100% beyond criticism.

Thursday Thoughts: The Jewish Heart of The Nightmare Before Christmas
On a recent episode of the Disney For Scores podcast, Danny Elfman, composer and songwriter for The Nightmare Before Christmas, was asked about his relationship with Halloween and Christmas.
“Since I was a little kid,” Elfman replied, “my least favorite night of the year was Christmas, and my favorite night of the year was Halloween… At Christmas, I was just a lonely Jewish kid in a neighborhood without Jewish friends.”
And I had to pause the podcast and shout, “I KNEW IT!!!”
I love TNBC for a lot of reasons. The music is catchy. The stop-motion animation is amazing. The setting and characters are fascinating, bizarre, lovable, and unforgettable. But the thing I’m happiest to ramble on about when it comes to TNBC is its message.
Last year, I called this film an “Anti-Christmas Movie.” A Christmas movie follows a character who does not value Christmas as they gradually learn to bring Christmas into their life. However, the upshot of TNBC is that despite Jack’s fascination with Christmas, he should NOT bring Christmas into his life. Instead, he should let the Christmas people do their thing, and he should take pride in his own culture, his own people, and his own holiday.
And in my heart, I knew there was no way a movie like this could have been made only by gentiles. Gentiles love Christmas, and they love telling other people that we need Christmas. As a Jewish kid surrounded by non-Jews for most of my life, I know this all too well. When I was in kindergarten, some girls at school told me that if I didn’t believe in Santa (and Jesus and the Easter Bunny), then there would be monsters under my bed forever. That was just the beginning of a long road of well-meaning antisemitism, and at the end of that road, I’m left with a bad taste in my mouth at the very sight of a Christmas tree. To be clear, I don’t care if other people enjoy Christmas – my problem is with people telling me that I should enjoy Christmas.
In my experience, it’s not just religious Christians who were so eager to remind me that I shouldn’t be alone on Christmas. Atheists love Christmas and are very quick to tell me that I should love it, too, even after I politely explain that I don’t need Christmas to be happy. So while I had no idea whether the creators of TNBC were religious Christians, and given that Jesus is not mentioned even once in the film I had a hunch that they were not, I also had a hunch that this movie would not exist without some Jewish person’s contributions.
Now, Tim Burton is not Jewish, despite his clear love for and frequent use of Jewish folklore, imagery, and history. Henry Selick, the often-forgotten director of TNBC, is not Jewish, and I’m pretty sure Caroline Thompson, the screenwriter, is also not Jewish. So that leaves Danny Elfman. The lonely Jewish kid who, to paraphrase him, felt disconnected from the Christian world around him, loved getting to run around in a monster mask at Halloween, and grew gloomy at the sound of Christmas music in the mall. Danny Elfman, who poured his heart and soul into the character of Jack Skellington to the point where his soundtrack demos were often used in the final film instead of the studio recordings.
Sure, you can argue about who really holds the power of storytelling in a film. The characters and basic plot undeniably belong to Tim Burton. But a movie musical truly comes to life in its songs, and in TNBC, the music never stops playing. The music carries us through this world where Christmas isn’t the most important thing, where you don’t need to take on someone else’s culture in order to feel complete, where people love and support you for who you are in all your oddness and uniqueness.
It’s no wonder I love this movie so much, and it’s no wonder that a Jewish man was at the heart of its creation.

Here's a disturbing theory i have of Dorit man
Honestly, have you ever wondered why Mayor's spider only has six legs instead of having eight legs like the average spider? Well I have a disturbing theory why. As you can see in the movie, when he gets pissed off, it seems he can get pretty aggressive. My evidence: when Lock Shock and Barrel fling things at him when we first see them for the first time in the movie, he growls in anger, and when his spider dosent stay on his chest, he aggressively puts it back on his chest. He also pushes wolf man aside saying, "Move aside." Agressivly, all while trying to get to his hearse. So he's capable of hurting somebody if something dosent go his way. In this case, Jack being missing. My theory here is that one day, the spider didn't do what he wanted, was stay on his chest (or doing anything to piss him off for that matter), so he got so aggressive that he accidentally ripped two of its legs off, wich resulted in it only having six legs now. And maybe thats why it escaped him in the movie, because its scared of him. Or it could be that the spider is a mutant, wich wouldn't be surprising, because we're talking about the world of Tim Burton where things are always twisted, creepy, and weird. But my theory would work, cuz like I said, he gets aggressive when he gets pissed off. And that could be dangerous. That could also tie into his bipolar personality, Where he can change his mood at the drop of a pin. Like I said, this could be dangerous. There is a chance he could go insane by constantly switching emotions (and faces) back and forth. Thats probably why he overreacts (sound familiar?) when Jack is missing. When things don't go his way, he panics. Wich causes him to be hurt, or potentially hurt somebody else. Which obviously isn't good.
I dunno I thought I'd maybe share my thoughts on this. Its a dumb theory, but I think It could work.
Sorry for posting two times today btw
