The Moldy Peaches – Brooklyn Steel – August 10, 2023

The Moldy Peaches rose out of the downtown antifolk scene around the turn of the millennium, becoming a cult band thanks to their live performances and several recorded releases (including some on CDR). They broke into the mainstream when the chart-topping Juno soundtrack came out in 2007. And a year later, the Moldy Peaches were broken up. But you can’t keep a good band down, and after playing three dates in Europe this past spring, the reunited Moldy Peaches put on their first headlining U.S. show in two decades last night at a very welcoming Brooklyn Steel.

Before taking the stage, they put on the Moldy Peaches Talent Show with performances by band members doing two-song sets: Guitarist Toby Goodshank went first, followed by Bass Race (featuring bassist Steven Mertens), then Only Son (guitarist Jack Dishel) and the pop duo Candy Boys (with drummer Brent Cole).

After the talent show, Kimya Dawson’s aunt Patrice Jetter, a disability-rights activist, addressed the audience. Then the Moldy Peaches took the stage in costumes. They played straight through with no encore, Dawson joking that they’d played all 21 of their songs. But for the finale, she and Adam Green performed as a duo, like they first did when they began in the late ’90s.

Vincent Cacchione is a writer, songwriter, and producer with a wide-ranging set of skills and credits.  From indie rock to fiction podcasts, Vin’s fingerprints are all over the industry.    

His work in podcasting began in collaboration with Julian Koster on the magical Orbiting Human Circus podcast for Night Vale Presents and WNYC.  He has since become a go-to collaborator in the NYC podcasting scene, working with teams large and small to bring you shows like The Space Within, Cancellation Island, Anthem: Homunculus, Meet Cute, Welcome to Night Vale, and the Webby Award-winning Conversations With People Who Hate Me.

He is currently developing a podcast with counter-culture writer Larry “Ratso” Sloman based on Ratso’s 17+ hours of never-before-heard Leonard Cohen interviews, as well as The Story I’m Telling You, a hybrid documentary and scripted memoir based on a cassette he discovered of his father Gino’s unfinished plans for a memoir film. 

Vin’s background in music, music production, and fiction podcasting helped him cultivate a niche but diverse set of skills including audio engineering, writing, directing actors, scheduling productions, and being a one-stop post-production shop (sound-design, score, editing, and mixing). 

Vin is a Podcasting Swiss Army Knife able to lead a large, high-budget production team or one-man-banding an indie podcast.  He has an intimate knowledge of every phase of turning an idea into audio magic from writing and editing to pre-production, working with actors, and post-production. 

He has recently produced and co-composed the score for Jessica Chastain’s award winning show for Audible and Topic Studios The Space Within.  On The Space Within, Vin took the lead on the show’s production shepherding the series from script to final master, while being the glue between the writers, director, actors, and post-production team.  He also co-composed the score with Jeff Tobias. 

For John Cameron Mitchell and Michael Cavadias’ Cancellation Island (a co-production of Topic and iHeart), Vin was a one-man, audio-producing band, manning the project from it’s live recording at the Bell House through ADR sessions, edit, sound design, score, director’s notes, and final mix. 

He recently wrote the songs and produced the audio for Jacquelyn Landgraf’s heart-warming It Makes A Sound series, starring Annie Golden.  And he is the co-founder of The Drama Queenz a pre-teen theater troupe, where he and his partner Magali teach children the art of staging an original musical. He is one of only a few people on earth who can say he has written three musicals with a bunch of ten year olds. 

Vin is also a published songwriter with the Concord Music Group and fronts his own indie-pop band, Caged Animals, who have released several albums on the UK’s Lucky Number Music.

Vin is devoted to helping artists and creative teams realize their goals because he is an artist himself and his core collaborative spirit is enthusiastic, supportive, and adaptable.

『エルヴィス／Elvis』

“その時、腰が動いた”。メンフィスからラスベガスまで悪夢と背中合わせのスターダムを貪り、貪られ、燃え尽きるまでの英雄暗黒神話。パーカー大佐を語り手に大胆に解釈した、魔術（ブードゥー？）的ジェットコースター映画。20世紀アメリカ史、ポップ音楽史、芸能史、信仰、亡霊…の複数レイヤーはぴったりくっ付いたまま、どれも切り離せない。エルヴィスもその一つ。でもこんだけアメリカの光と影を象徴するポップアイコンは、エルヴィスかマリリン・モンローくらいだろうな。（奇しくもその２人の映画が同じ年に…）

『スペンサー ダイアナの決意／Spencer』

『ジャッキー』に続き、パブロ・ララインの20世紀実録風「亡霊映画」。ジョニー・グリーンウッドの音楽、まるで棺を運ぶように進む車列、そこにあるキジの屍、そして「何かが見ている」気配を感じる亡霊視点のカメラが過剰にオカルトホラー。ダイアナは魂を失くした着せ替え人形と化し、二つの屋敷の間に放置された案山子だ。けど、ララインは亡霊を殺しはしない。ただ穏やかに安らぎを与えるのだった。

『ミセス・ハリス、パリへ行く／Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris』

憧れは力なり。キラキラ輝くドレスと、それに心奪われる瞬間のドリー・ズーム！ミセス・ハリスの赤い頬、ちょこまかした仕草、時に押しが強い姿勢、旅行鞄で佇む姿はまるでパディントン。でも実は対���についての話であり、「箱とその中身」の話で、ある意味左岸派映画。贅沢は敵じゃない！レスリー・マンヴィルとイザベル・ユペールの共演こそ、ほんと贅沢でした。

『NOPE／ノープ』

思った以上にスローバーン。そして思った以上に『ヴァスト・オブ・ナイト』と対になる。何せ、方や「I see you」、方や「I hear you」だもの。アレはアダムスキー型というより、下から見上げたカウボーイハットみたいだった。

『マイ・ニューヨーク・ダイアリー』

作家になるにはNYだ！と、まずは憧れの力ありき。でも書く以前に読んでばかりの読書映画。ひたすらインプットの日々、消化しきれないほどの情報や知識や刺激的体験が次々と。羨ましいやらわかりみ深いやら。「フラニーとゾーイー」を久々に読み直したくなった。

サメに食われたいのにサメはなし。NYのビーチを転々としながら、ひたすらその時を待つ女の脳内モノローグが延々と続く。まるで「ゴドーを待ちながら」か、ひとりマンブルコアか。正に人を食ったようなオチと、Toby Goodshankのエンディング曲がダメ押しする、デッドパンでナンセンスな「探索的狡噛」。それでもれっきとしたビーチ映画でサメ映画（反ジョーズ映画）。あの声とリズムが妙に心地良かった。

企業ミュージカル・レコード沼へようこそ。それは知られざるミュージカルの宝庫、もう一つのショウビズ世界。名作や名曲があり、巨匠もスターもいた。深い、深いぞこの沼は…！愛と情熱、同志との出会い、真剣で貪欲な探究心が思わぬ広がりを見せていくのにワクワクしかないドキュメンタリー。マニアの真っすぐで曇りのない愛が起こす奇跡に清々しく心洗われた。

『キャリー』meets『ミザリー』を更にメンタル・スプラッターに振り切った感じで、ローズ・グラス監督デビュウ作は完成度高いと思う。陰気に寂れたコニーアイランド、ワンルームのアパート、主演モーフィッド･クラークが良い。

ロトスコープ・アニメで事細かに再現したスペースエイジの子供時代。ギプスしてる子が必ずいたとかイタズラ電話とかあったあった、TVアンテナに巻いたアルミホイル細かすぎ！でも記憶とは既にファンタジー。同じ69年の『ベルファスト』と通じると思った。ベトナム戦争とアイルランド紛争、少年の頭の中で混じり合う虚実、モノクロやアニメーションとしてパッケージ化した少年時代…けど、こちらには帰る家があって安心して眠れる。その楽観性が尊い。

『幸せへのまわり道』

トム・ハンクスはご本人完コピ以上に、優しく細めた目の奥にぞっとさせるブラックホールを演じているから恐るべし。殆ど瞬きしないし笑顔なのに笑ってない、『コラライン』のボタンの目みたいな…つい覗き込んでしまうようなその目に映る自分を見つめざるを得ない。ロジャースさんのシーンは全部、心がツーンとする。君たちは僕であり、君にできたなら僕にもできる。大変だけどやらなくちゃ…。ご本人の歌声が流れる中、優しさの王国ミニチュアセットを組み立てる男たちの手！

◆他にも良かった

『アネット』

緑のローブで殆どメルド（ドニ・ラヴァン）と化してるが、アダム・ドライヴァーはマイクとも人形ともプロレスができる、ほんと良いプロレスラーだな！先にサントラ聴いてたのもあって、スパークスのナンバーが頭から離れない。

『レット・ゼム・オール・トーク』

事件のないミステリー。ロードのないロードムービー（客船だから）。けど作家と探偵と死体はいる。そこがとても面白い。いわば聞き込みをする探偵役、ごく自然と年上に懐き気を許させるルーカス・ヘッジスのリアクションが絶妙。ソダーバーグは今まで特にピンとこなかったけれど、これはかなり好みで楽しかった。

エヴァン・レイチェル・ウッドの長くて重たそうな髪とダボダボな古ジャージ姿、動物的で芸���的な身のこなし、そして野太い声のインパクトたるや。生まれたてでおっぱい目指して匍匐前進する場面はちょっと感動しちゃう。痛くて甘くて苦くて儚くて曖昧で奇妙な、説明しにくい感覚をユーモラスに掬い取ってみせるミランダ・ジュライ。『ニューヨーカー誌の世界』にある短編小説の映画化『ロイ・スパイヴィ』も、ほろ苦く甘い後味が好き。

銀貨30枚より銃よりも強いのは、権力のバッヂ（今だからこそ尚更うんざりする話だ）。言葉と目力で深く静かにカリスマ性を放つダニエル・カルーヤと、身軽な身体で飄々とリアクションするラキース・スタンフィールドがとても良い。特に「何なんだよもう！」って巻き込まれて焦って悪足掻きするラキースは毎度最高、そのジレンマは滑稽なほど哀しい。監督シャカ・キングの演出が非常にソリッド。
