idk if it counts as an Unpopular Opinion tm but something that enrages me to no end is the explicit gendering of supposed reader-insert fanfics (this applies to p much any fandom but for undertale in Particular) and also the gendering of frisk & chara? like y’all they’re explicitly referred to with they/them pronouns, that does not mean that you get to ‘decide’ what they are. & with insert fanfics the reader-character is Literally Always a lady & like! what about the rest of us who are Not That!

I will tread carefully around this topic, because as much as I am an ally and love my enby friends and followers, I am still a dumb human and may word stuff the wrong way. (Call me out and educate me if that happens)

First thing: the gendering of reader-insert fanfics.

I totally support people writing reader-inserts with the pronouns they feel comfortable with. It’s their fantasy and we’re just in for the ride and we should feel happy to have this content. The majority of people writing fics are ladies (ALL THE LADIES) and want their faves to love them, and there’s nothing wrong with that. There are less enby fic writers and even fewer gentlemen fic writers, thus there’s less content focused on reader-inserts like this. A shame indeed.

BUT I dislike it when people pick and choose the gender of a reader-insert MC when the author has stated the character is an enby. Some fics (like mine, for instance) are open to interpretation and any gender goes (no gender too, fuck it, it’s for y’all to have fun). But some are clearly written by and for people who want that sliver representation. It irritates me to see that, so I get what you mean.

(Maybe giving more support to fanfiction and content with less popular MC representations would help us fill the voids in our hearts that yearn for those? I’d love to see more enby-only reader-inserts, too)

Second thing: the gendering of the KFC gang

To me, Frisk was a girl. And before you grab your pitchforks, hear me out.

I played Undertale. Me. I was the character. It was me. I had an adventure in the game. ME. And I am a lady. I got emotionally involved in the story and felt immersed because the little yellow kid with brown hair that I controlled was ME during the gameplay. Sounds selfish? Probably. But I thought I was allowed to do that because the kid in the game had no gender attached. I didn’t know they’re named Frisk before the very end of the whole thing. I thought “Oh, cool! The game is written the way the kid’s gender isn’t hinted in any way, so everybody can insert themselves and have an emotional journey!”

I thought it was me. That the name I picked was for the kiddo on the screen.

Maybe I was too used to picking the character’s gender because I play a lot of RPGs where it’s possible to do so. Maybe I was too eager to decide they’re a girl because apart from those few RPGs, most main characters in the games I play are guys and I wanted my own representation. Who the fuck knows, I’m not gonna unwrap that here.

In short - I got plot-twisted by Toby. Sike, that’s a Frisk, not a you.

A big part of me still feels that everybody is allowed to insert whatever pronouns they feel like inserting into the KFC kiddos because games are supposed to be fun for them.

However, I understand that enbies need representation. They deserve it even, seeing how much content doesn’t give them the representation and isolates them from all the fun and stories.

Both of those approaches can exist at the same time and those gender ‘wars’ around KFC gang are just fucking stupid, sorry not sorry. I use they/them pronouns for the KFC gang out of respect. Because that’s how they’re referred to in the games and because it’s important to a lot of people and also because I am aware that my experience in the game is not universal. It’s not that fucking hard to grasp.

**spoilers for panic at the art show and home for the holidays**

OK people. I actually don’t have a ton of commentary on these two so I’m gonna try and keep it (relatively) short and sweet [Edit from Future Me: Failed Step 1].

Also, iirc, this is the week Dropout starts streaming new Fantasy High eps on Wednesdays which is very dope and I am very excited for. I probably won’t do full on recaps like I do for normal eps because, lbr, I don’t strictly have the time to be recapping these eps at all and it’s pure stubbornness that keeps me from making wiser time management decisions. But, rest assured, if I have an Opinion, you will hear it whether you want to or not.

Anyway, on with the show.

Last recap, I mentioned that this ep was giving me Aelwen house party vibes and now it reminds me of that ep in another way: Everyone rolled like TRASH almost the entire ep. It was so frustrating! They barely got any hits in until like halfway through the ep.

(Aw man, I just realized I’m gonna have to remember which spelling of Aelwen is correct again now that FH is coming back.)

I love how Murph is immediately like, “I need to make sure my wife doesn’t die during this fight avenging her fictional husband.”

Isabella also has Aelwen’s trick of poofing around the battlefield which is annoying as hell (ha) for the group.

Siobhan hilariously casts fear on Priya just to be spiteful. I thought she was doing it to help the evac process but no. It was a purely spiteful action. Bless.

When Kug turns into an ape he, of course, turns into *the* NY ape, King Kong.

“I roll a nat 20 on an epic shit.”

When Brennan was describing Kingston’s spectral New Yorker Guardians I was already thinking about that one part of Spiderman 2 (the OG Toby Mac version) and then he straight up said, “You mess with one of us, you mess with all of us,” and I lost it.

“Deny the stairs the pleasure of my feet.” Emily is a poet.

I want to know what makes a pigeon spicy more than anything.

The fact that Brennan killed Ox AGAIN and then immediately looked into the camera and let the audience know the dog was fine because he clearly Oracle stared into the future between eps and saw the entire internet sharpening their pitchforks was so funny.

About midway through the ep, Pete tries and fails to send Isabella back to hell and Isabella starts monologing about her plans and connection with Robert Moses (she stole the list from Santa and is/was gonna marry Moses apparently). I wonder if Brennan was like, “These players are for sure gonna murder her without getting any useful info out of her unless she goes full Bond Villain right now.”

And, proving my point, Emily immediately does 56 points of damage, royally f-ing Isabella up.

This is a really civilian heavy fight which feels weird in a way the FH fights never did. Like, these aren’t even civilians who live in an adventuring town in a fantasy world. These are just normal ass civilians in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Pete fails a wild magic roll after failing to teleport into the building and then gets a choice of getting really strong (which prob would have let him bust down the door) or to teleport in (which is what he does and exactly what he wanted). Very clutch when the dice rolls play into the story like that.

Kingston lightning bolts Isabella’s hair off which is just malicious but also totally called for.

On her next turn, Sophie gets hurt on purpose to get low enough to activate her ring, lets her hair burn for long enough to shorten it to a cute bob, insults Isabella, then knocks her tf out.

I love that Emily took one of her teeth (a seemingly crazy move) and when called out by Lou was like, “It’s a link to Robert Moses” (a completely reasonable answer). That’s the Axford one-two punch.

I didn’t mention it before but, Willie the golem is here, first immobile but then brought back by Misty. Post fight, he says he was somehow brought here by one of the evil factions of the city and says they’ll talk about it later. Also, Misty makes out with him (DON’T KINKSHAME HER).

With a high insight roll, Kingston is able to deduce that the group was ambushed (though not by Priya) and that their victory was a really important one for the fate of the city.

(Sidenote: The amount that Pete is Over Priya in this ep is so funny.)

Back at Wally’s (which is where Kug is now staying) Wally has gotten Kug a dog bed to sleep in and fancy charcuterie cheese because he and Ricky are the only pure-hearted people in NYC.

At the same time, Pete and Kingston have a very sweet heart to heart and then settle down at Kingston’s place to chill and listen to jazz. Idk how else we expected this to resolve, considering this is a Brennan Lee Mulligan DM’d show where the sacred pillars are Teamwork, Friendship, Communication, and Making up an NPC on the Fly Because One of Your PC’s Decided to do an Insane Thing.

Next up is the Christmas ep and Brennan, Emily, and Zac are in sweaters for the occasion.

Well,actually it’s the 21st and Emily immediately clocks that that’s the solstice.

Are cookies the good carb?/Absolutely not. But have fun with your life. (I love Ricky’s soft jock energy.)

“I run deliveries,” Pete says to Kingston’s parents, not technically lying but also not being completely truthful. Misty would be proud.

Going over to Misty, it seems pretty clear at this point (and it’s confirmed in the promo for next ep) that Misty’s fairy business is some kind of de-aging/reincarnation for herself. I wonder how many of these she’s done so far. She said she’s been around for, what? 200, 300 years? Assuming she’s been doing then reincarnations at about 65-70 years old and she reincarnates to around 25? Maybe 6 times? Idk. Just spitballing.

Saucer of milk to keep the faeries from stealing her (non-existing) children. Faerie lore is wild y'all.

Did you take another level of warlock?/Yeah bitch.

The fact that since Sophie has joined a monastery, she’s only taken Warlock levels and no Monk levels is very funny from a story perspective. It’s like, she finally comes to this sacred place to be trained to her full potential and she’s just spending what should be her sparring time playing with her cat in exchange for spells. Wild.

Emily’s cat-like, self-satisfied grin when Brennan is like, “So you just jerry-rigged yourself clairvoyance powers, huh?” is so good.

And she did it on the fly because Emily Axford is winning D&D. There are no points but she’s winning.

So, uh, Emily does, two things, very in character right after the other:

Thing number one: She send her unseen servant to spy on her family. Her dad seems hardline, “F, Dale. Whatever. Family first. She needs to get over it.” On the other side of the spectrum is her mom who is very upset about the whole affair with her siblings falling in the middle.

The second thing she does, very casually I might add, is have her unseen servant BURN DOWN HER HOUSE SO SHE CAN COMMIT INSURANCE FRAUD.

EMILY

Everyone loses their minds and rightfully so. What a wild-ass swing that no one could have seen coming. I love it.

I almost forgot that Ricky was a fire fighter who would not abide that nonsense until Brennan decided to cut to him.

Ricky just dolphin swims across the Hudson in 2.5 mins to go put out the fire that Sophie set. Amazing.

Ally mocking Emily/Sophie: Truthfully, I don’t know what happened.

"I love John McClane, because he loves his wife.” WALLY

Wally: Oh we’re gonna tell a lie on Christmas.

I would really like to know what trace stuff what on the drugs Pete got from 7 but Ally rolled too low to figure it out.

Well it took him a long ass time but glad to have Pete on the selling drugs to kids is bad train. Choo-choo, dude.

7 saying you can hack in real life in reference to his AK-47 has the same energy as Hardison using the word hack in literally any semi-weird episode of Leverage.

SOCIAL MEDIA IS VOLUNTARY PANOPTICON

So Kug goes with Wally to David’s house disguised as a dog and, despite that, blurts out that he’s his dad immediately. Well, he tries to. The Umbral Arcana stops him, unfortunately.

Sophie showing up with a raw goose and hellish rebuking it is so metal and it’s a shame no one got to appreciate it.

Me when Sophie’s Mom changes into black top in solidarity for Sophie’s mourning: F EVERY OTHER NON-SOPHIE BICICLETA. I RESPECT YOU.

Kingston is hustling very hard to get his man Pete a job which is a very Kingston move. That’s how guys like that show affection.

Didn’t mention it before but Kingston’s parents and Mom specifically adopting Pete is very cute.

Sidenote: Idk what 7 was talking about Pete trying to stay low profile. He wears a cowboy hat (now a ZEBRA STRIPED one, courtesy of Kingston). I think the subtlety train has sailed my guy.

Esther shows up at the firehouse, carrying presents for her mom and grandma and looking for Ricky. The says that she’s kinda dealing with something and it feels good to be around him (beat) magically speaking. Sure. I’m gonna keep my Hercules soundtrack on hand just in case anyway.

I think Ricky is the only person who, with no pretense, could give his crush a sexy calendar featuring him.

Anyway, turns out Esther’s mom and grandma are the furies of Tompkins Square and she’s fated to join them or something.

Esther causally: I defy you, I defy the prophecy.

The fury thing would explain why Esther’s mom would have cursed Kug. They are famously magical punishers.

Ricky is a magically certified Good Boy but we been knew.

Zac’s restraint to respect Esther’s personal boundaries in lieu of getting a lore drop to stay true to Ricky’s character is amazing. Mad props.

So we slide over to Misty’s Christmas party which Stephen Sondhein is attending and him having a character card kinda killed me.

There’s a post on tumblr somewhere about playing faerie incapability for impoliteness against a vampires need to be invited in and that’s what I thought about when Moses and his vamp friends showed up at Misty’s house.

Robert tries to talk Misty into striking a deal with him for protection from Titania. She’s very much not having it.

“You know Robert, I love a comedy and I love a farce. I’d like to remind you of who it is that started this and it’s not me and it’s not my friends but I can assure you Robert Moses that we will be the ones to end it if you do not. Do you understand me?” Damn. That’s a mic drop from Misty.

[As I’m editing this, I’m realizing I somehow lost a BIG chunk of text. I’m not gonna write it all up again but the Cliffnotes are as follows:

Between the Solstice and Christmas, the gang goes Grand Central Station to see the clockwork gnomes that live there because trouble is apparently afoot. Some size changing nonsense happens and Pete shoots a dog (with mini bullets, the dog is fine). Lou is enchanted even though Kingston is not (a common theme with him). Ally and Emily are on the same nonsense wavelength (as usual).

There are dope magical dragon trains under Grand Central Station that go to the shadow realm which is a place I’d like to know about. Kingston has never seen these trains before even though you’d really think he would have.

Murph says Gnome Rights which is wild if you know what Naddpod is like.

Anyway, the high priestess of the gnomes passed out the other day and they figure out it was due to pixie magic which is suspicious. They also know they pixies have access to a “time stone” which leads me to believe that it’s Brennan and not Aguefort who thinks that Chronomancy is the most powerful magic of all.

Sophie and Jackson go to Dale’s grave on Christmas. Jackson explains that the Order of the Concrete Fist is basically a literal school of hard knocks. A counterbalance to all the reach for the stars dreaminess that comes with NYC.

Dale was their chosen one who was supposed to stop the monastery from falling when some unspecified badness crossed over to this side, but when he went to the place where he was supposed to get guidance, there was no one there (clearly tying in to what Dale said to Sophie last time they talked. I wonder what she needs to get to the top of? Empire State maybe?).

Watching Murph watching Emily, his real life spouse, play at grief for her fictional husband and do some truly insane things is so funny because you can clearly see him thinking, “I am married to this woman,” which, in fairness, is probably the main thing he’s thinking when he’s playing D&D with Emily.

I’m probably missing something but that’s all I remember. Back to post-Christmas!]

So it’s opening night at Misty’s show and, somehow, Ricky’s first show ever.

I love that Don Confetti is there because of Siobhan’s offhanded comment for a handful of eps ago about him being a supporter of the arts.

Anyway, everything is going great until the second act when Titania busts in through the mirror which is *not* is storage as Misty requested but on stage. It’s a theater fight, y'all! And not the West Side Story kind although if that doesn’t come up I will be very surprised.

Tinfoil Discussions: My Hero Academia - The UA Traitor

I guess I’m late for the height of this debate, but I might as well throw my hat in. I will begin with this though; I’m not caught up with the anime or manga. I am waiting for Season 4 to finish up so I can binge it, so everything I say below is from memory of seasons 1-3 (which I had really enjoyed having binged for 3 days, they really do the ‘punch the air in victory’ moments well), so some of it might be wrong through hindsight I don’t currently have (and please don’t let me know, I’ve done my best to limit the spoiler content as much as youtube keeps suggesting me thumbnails of s4 moments and manga chapters)

So for anyone farther back than I am, spoilers for Seasons 1-3 and general speculation below

There is a Traitor Among Us Said by Present Mic after Bakugo was taken in the Forest of Beasts, it became all to apparent that someone had been leaking information to the League of Villains. The idea of a traitor is an uncomfortable one, since it means that someone in the loveable cast is not genuine and what’s more is perfectly willing to allow heroes and students alike to die in order to simply get at All-Might. Now, I don’t think I know who the traitor is, but I do have theories and options. Suspecting the Students The students are the first to be suspected because they’re the new blood, all this has happened from the start of the semester and the young are influenced easier. With kids having constant access to their phones there is an easier possibility for a leak, and the traitor could be the following people Hagakure - Perhaps the one everyone seems to be looking to, it is quite easy to point the finger at the Invisible Girl. Hagakure is an expert in stealth and her personality is bubbly enough to be seen as a facade, being unable to keep track of her is the main reason people could suspect her. However, I really don’t like this option; it’s too easy you know? And you’d have to pull out a hell of a lot to explain multiple things. For instance, Hagakure can’t make objects invisible as shown by her clothes, where would she keep a phone? At USJ they were in their Hero outfits and if I remember rightly the Forest of Beasts had no phone signal, it’s possible that there’s like a tracker under her skin (a decent way to have the league bug the class but also have her be a victim) but even then that’s just location. Another qualm would be bastardizing her friendship with Ojiro and the people who actually see her (despite being invisible), if she wanted intel surely she’d get closer to the people of interest to the league, there’s also her desire to stand out, a spy would not be so flagrant about standing out. It could just be that I don’t want to suspect any of the Class 1-A students, but it does seem too obvious to make Hagakure the traitor. Monoma - on the other side of the coin there’s Monoma, who I really dislike. Mr ‘Ohmygoshclass1Ahasflawstoo’ is someone very obsessive over hierarchy, the line of superior and inferior. You also can’t deny that he has been trying to sow seeds of disarray by putting 1-A and 1-B against one another. Like Tobi in Naruto, it serves well to be wary of joke characters, and let’s not forget that Monoma has a dangerous quirk. His copying may not switch by touch, or deplete over 5 minutes without use, it could be that the ability disappears after 5 minutes of full use (or it’s just a flat out lie). His quirk is the worrisome thing, remember how he first met Midoriya? He intentionally bumped into him, if he’s able to copy One for All that could be extremely dangerous for the villain’s side right? Monoma being the traitor does require a bit of stretching though. it rides a lot on 1-B having been to USJ before 1-A (which is possible since Midoriya would have to recover from his broken arm on the combat training) and someone letting slip where the Forest was (since 1-B got there after 1-A, giving him opportunity to contact the league), he also got the information that 1-A would be at a different stadium for the license exams, allowing Toga to get some blood and pose as Camie for 3 days. He’s also someone who has had direct interaction with Bakugo and seen firsthand his potential, but he was also safe and sound in the Forest’s extra-curricular base (where Dabi just happened to know where Aizawa, Vlad and other students were). Monoma may be overboard, but it could just be his villainy seeping out, we cannot forget that Monoma is a formidable strategist as shown in the Calvary Battle. Mirio Togota - put down those pitchforks! I will immediately say that this is highly unlikely. But Buff Tintin just seems off to me, nobody can deny his strength or the refinement of his quirk but again it’s silliness as a front. He uses nudity as a distraction tool but we’ve seen him effortlessly use his quirk to stick his face out to Midoriya. Togota knows little about 1-A so that adds to his unlikelihood, but being closest to Number 1 and then to see All Might take on the first years? That could sting, and his quirk does allow him a strong capability for infiltration, all he has to do is poke an ear out somewhere hidden or phase through a locked room to look at documents. I heavily doubt this is where we’re going with him, but he is an option nonetheless. Suspecting the teachers While it’s difficult to accuse the students, the teachers are easier to accuse but harder to prove. Every teacher knows that All Might is weakening, but every teacher also knows about USJ and the Beast Forest’s location, so they have access to betray, it all then comes down to motive. Nezu - the principal is the heavy long shot, we know he has his manic times but it’s a matter of whether he would subject his fellow heroes and students to death. It’s a shallow motive that I don’t see, but you have to suspect the guy with all the information, especially now that he managed to put the students immediately under the eye of Big Brother. Ectoplasm - The man who can clone himself is definitely someone who can wander off. I remember them saying that he was able to clone himself more while drunk at karaoke, but is that simply a hint that Ectoplasm has at least 2 clones he never accounts for hero work? Judging by the peg leg he is certainly experienced, and I’m sure he ranks high on the ‘Heroes that look most like Villains’ list that Gang Orca is on (Endeavor’s Number 1 right? Has to be, only thing he would earn the Number 1 spot for besides World’s Worst Dad XD). Ectoplasm’s clones allow him to easily spy, steal and have an alibi all at once, his interaction with the students and knowledge of the class protocol do mean that he has the sufficient knowledge to leak to the league. Snipe - Snipe out of the teachers would be my likely pick, Gas Mask McCree here could’ve easily tapped Shigaraki with his quirk, but he went for the arm and leg even though he was going straight for Midoriya and All Might. The fact that he always wears a mask does open the door for him being a replacement as well, All for One having stolen his quirk and bestowed it unto a spy or simply that Snipe isn’t all that good. He was the first to quickly turn the finger pointing to Present Mic when he brought up traitor talk. Like the other two teachers, he’s able to access information without getting involved in the league’s matters, but it has to be really suspicious that he could headshot grunts at USJ but shot Shigaraki in spots he could survive in. Suspecting an outsider Just because there is a traitor leaking UA info, doesn’t mean that they have to be in UA, parents must have forms to permit their kids to go out in these things, and people can sneak into the premises in different ways. Currently though there is only one outsider I can suspect Endeavor - I can’t have been alone when the moment I saw Endeavor I thought ‘that guy’s a villain’. Since Season 3 I don’t believe he’s in league with the villains so much, his reaction to being Number 1 does slightly protect him from accusation, but not entirely. While he may be the Number 2 Hero, Endeavor is a horrible person, using money and influence to get what he wants and what he wants is to be treated as better than All Might, this coincides with the league’s goal to remove All Might as the Number 1 Hero and Symbol of Peace. Motivation for treachery would obviously be jealousy, and he’s only angry about the One for All incident because All Might still triumphed, so his ultimate victory is actually tainted, he didn’t want to win ‘this way’. The matter of him getting the info could require more traitors within UA, but someone of Endeavor’s status definitely has the funds to bribe or the influence to have access to security cameras, under the guise of a ‘parent keeping an eye on his child experiment’ (after all, wouldn’t want him to go like that other child with fire powers, Endeavor’s blue eyes and who’s obviously one of his previous failed experiments). Power and Influence allows people to get more things and being a UA alumnus also has small benefits to elbow in some spying. We were never told that Todoroki was on the list, but Endeavor would surely want to write Bakugo - the guy who beat his son at the Sports Festival - out of the way, even at USJ putting him in an area where his son could easily handle himself while Nomu ‘dealt’ with All Might. Suspecting someone new While the idea of a traitor means that you have to look at the characters you know, this could also be a red herring. One of UA’s current strengths has been the ability to trust one another in their ability, be it between classes or schools in the license exams. So to sow distrust means they break the foundations of the future. I believe that the endgame of the manga isn’t just having a ‘Number One Hero’ but a group of heroes who can all dispatch and work well together, it does look like that’s how we’re building with Midoriya, Todoroki and Bakugo getting some diverse team ups with the rest of their class. If that is the case, then this is the moment where the unity has to be reinforced, which’d mean identifying that a villain is causing this traitor talk. Besides, 3 people calling themselves a ‘league’ is rather underwhelming, most of their influence came post-Stain so maybe there have been people we’ve yet to see. A Mind Reader - We’ve had telepathy in Mandalay (low suspicion on her, since she knows nothing about USJ) going outwards but she was unable to actually read minds, we also have a brainwasher in Shinso. So right in the middle would be someone who can read people’s thoughts, a mind reader easily has access to read the thoughts of teachers to relay back to the league. A Bug - we know that there are animal-kind quirks (oh yeah Koda’s quirk could be treacherous, but he’s too wimpy for me to suspect him) in Tsu, Pony, that OVA Lizard girl, Tokoyami, Spinner, Selkie and Gang Orca, so what if there was a villain with a quirk of an insect. We had a small nod to insects in the exam Kyoka and Koda had, showing how they could sneak into other places - or people in Present Mic’s case. If there was someone with an insect quirk they could literally be a Fly on the Wall. A Body Swapper - I mentioned earlier that Snipe could have his body swapped because he’s hidden under the mask, but we could go deeper. Citing Naruto’s Yamanaka Clan jutsu, DBZ’s Ginyu or DC Comics’ Jericho, there could be someone with the quirk to basically take over someone’s body for a short while. This could be a way to have characters be unknowing leaks. Like how a mind reader goes between Mandalay and Shinso’s quirks, a body swapper would sit between Shinso and Toga’s quirks so it’s not entirely out there for a quirk like that to exist, let alone for nobody to notice that quirk exists because they don’t ever recall their body being taken over. Conclusion So yeah, those are my list of suspects. As stated before I’d rather it not be a 1-A student, the art of these things is to use it as a twist and if you can immediately guess the twist then it’s not a good twist. Granted I’m sure delivery can better a obvious twist, such as when we finally get told that Dabi is related to the Todoroki family or when Stain gets released and fights alongside Midoriya but in terms of the UA Traitor - a lingering plot line that has spread through half the series - you need a big drop to validate the wait. Personally I would like the traitor to either be a teacher, Endeavor or someone we’ve not seen before that builds to a big bad. Regardless it’ll probably be years before I find out, much shorter for Manga readers, but when it does happen I hope the reveal is satisfying.

How can liberals old enough to remember the 1980s and what a happy and prosperous time they were, continue to bash Ronald Reagan whose policies created that wonderful era?

COMMENTARY:

I voted for Nixon before I went to Vietnam and I voted for him when I got back. I actually worked, briefly, as a volunteer at CRP ( or CREEP as everyone on Capitol Hill called it) and hung out, briefly. at the same Georgetown saloon, The Guards, where “Pitchfork Pat: Buchanan and a number of the White House Plumbers, and their women, hung out, but I really didn;t want to be around people like that and most of them would become the Movement Conservatives who came to town with Reagan and formed the cult of personality around him as part of Newt Gingrich’s political strategy for the Contract With America to make him Speaker of the House.

I am what I describe as an Eisenhower-Romney Republican. I’m an Army brat and a hard-wired Eisenhower-Marshall Republican, in the sense that they were about as apolitical as you can get. In an Officer’s Mess, you don’t discuss politics, women or religion: a common fellowship that obtained around the Roman centurions in the secrete Roman intelligence committe that published and distributed the Epistle to the Hebrews. The only political activity I participated from my sophamore year in high school until I got back from Vietnam in 1971 was a mock student body presidential election voice vote in assembly between LBJ and Barry Goldwater, who was as crazy as MTG. LBJ won, pulling away and the nation agreed with us. Plus voting. The people around “Pitchfork Pat” Buchanan were variations on the theme of crazy like Barry Goldwater: it’s a cultural charateristics of the Movement Conservatives who came to town with Reagan and, until Trump was elected, was running the GOP.

As an Eisenhower-Romney Republican, I was declared RINO by Charles Z. Wick and put on a Movement Conservative black list which persists to this day. Wick was running Reagan’s transition team and he told me I would never work on K Street again for anybody and it came true.

That wasn’t much fun. That was the era Movement Conservatives like Tukkker Carlson remember fondly as the time when Being Conservative was Cool, not like the ‘60’s, when being Conservative meant you didn’t get laid on campus because the Conservative women didn’t fuck and the liberal women liked big black dicks and guys who burned their draft cards with hair stylings like Mike Jagger or Stockley Carmichael. Basically, all Pro-Life men and Pro-Life women like MTG missed the Sexual Revolution entirely, at the time, and continue to resent the rest of the world for not being Amish. This is a featue of the structural white supremacy of the Movment Conservatives.

So, in 1981, when the Movement Conservatives came to town, they moved into the most racially mellow urban culture in America. In spite of Kent State, the tribal experience of Woodstock and the esprit de corps of the anti-war/civil rights community defined DC’s collective culture, universally. And, in DC at the time when white bigots from Wall Street, Hollywood and Vine and white gated communities in Florida began trickling in with their ideolgical MAGA caps showing up in liberal bars around town, the racism meter went from 0 to 11 overnight. It was like hitting a switch. DC was playing Chuck Brown’s “Bustin’ Loose” as a legacy of the organic unity of the 4th of July, 1976 and the Movement Conservatives brought in Toby Keith complaining about the Dixie Chicks.. Racially, the DC culture from that day until January, 1981, was like a champagne bath. And, then, the Movment Conservatives became the turds in the punch bowl.

And that wasn’t fun.

So, if you remember how happy everybody was when Reagan moved in and the Movement Conservatives began to pollute the culture inside the Beltway like the CO from Cadillac limo idling in a basement parking garage.

Whenever I hear someone from Tukkker Carlson’s demographic allude to the paradise of the Reagan years, and how cool it was to be Conservative, like J. Michael Fox and Willam F. Buckley, and I think of Ben Shapiro, the Kool Kid’s Philosopher. This guy has built a career around his testicals failure to descend.

The most important event during the Reagan administration was when Nancy fired Donald T. Regan for betraying her husband and denying him a share in Gorbachev’s Nobel Prize. Reagan promised Gorbachev America would provide essentially a continuation of the Marshall Plan to support Russia’s conversion from Soviet Marxism to a Russian version of American British constitutional capitalism and Regan sabotaged the program in favor of the criminal agenda he was pursuing on Wall Street with off-shore banking.

Now, see, when I got back from Vietnam, I was a white guy with short hair who didn’t share many of the values of the SNL demographic, but I was a combat vet and that was catnip to a certain community of international sport fuckers I stumbled into by blind luck. It was like that Seinfeld episode where George’s picture of his fianncee got him into serious clubs and raves, like an escort past the velvet rope at Studio 54. I couldn’t get there by myself, but the women sort of passed me around and that went on until the Tukkker Carlson demographic came to town and fucked up the Sexual Revolution by monitizing everything. “Pretty Women” and “The Big Chill” pretty well marked the end of the Woodstock victory party in the cultural war and the beginning of the Harvey Weinstein/Movement Conservative cultural distortions arising from the class warfare of Supply Side economcs and the evil enchantment of the Reagan cult of personality. The ’60s really ended by the 1982 midterms and the economic policy that defined “The Art of the Deal” ended with Bob Dole’s 1984 Tax Reform. In 1981,

Trump’s business model defined the leading edge of the Green New Deal beginning to emerge from the Nixon-Moynihan-Carter Affirmative Action legislative package designed to transform the Military Industrial Complex to the Aerospace-Entrpreneurial Matrix at the core of the Green New Deal. The object of the exercise was to build on the success of Apollo 11, globally, and put a NASA-Soyuz base on the moon by 2001, just like the movie.

The Supply Side Economcs of the Movment Conservatives stopped that process in its tracks. Under Reagan and Supply Side Economics, Space Shuttles began blowing up. But before that happened, Trump was on the Entrepreneurial side of the equation and his business model, which was based on his vision and Barbara Res’s operational competence, was leading the way into the Green New Deal until Supply Side Economics pulled the plug on the New Deal structues underwriting it. In 1981, The Art of the Deal led directly to Space X, 30 years sooner.

The irony is that AOC shares Trump’s 1981 vision of the Green New Deal, but she also embodies the operational comptence of Barbara Res and the ways and means of Nancy Pelosi. After 2018, the only thing standing between Trump and the Green New Deal was Reaganomics and the Contract With America.

And MTG.

Here’s the thing: if the Democrats and the Eisenhower-Romney Republicans in the Senate can conspire to create veto-proof legislation for Biden’s Infrastructure Capital Budget, the economy will slip naturally into the Green New Deal before the mid-terms and Biden will be able to end the Korean War. And maybe the people who misremember when Conservatives were Cool will shrivel up and vanish like a persisten migraine, never to return.

Now, that would be fun.

Weirdly enough, I also remember the whole fallout re: The Dixie Chicks being a really fucking HUGE thing to me during my childhood.

For those of you who did not grow up in the hell pits of country music territory and don’t know, The Dixie Chicks is basically an all-female country band that accidentally landed themself in this huge country-music controversy in 2003. To quote wiki:

During the run-up to the invasion of Iraq, Dixie Chicks performed in concert in London on March 10, 2003, at the Shepherd's Bush Empire theatre in England. This concert kicked off their Top of the World Tour. During the introduction to their song "Travelin' Soldier", Natalie Maines, who along with Robison and Maguire is also a native of Texas, said:

"Just so you know, we're on the good side with y'all. We do not want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas."[41]

They became utter pariahs over night. I was a child- in 2003 I would’ve been in third grade- and overnight they dropped from being a band that was always on the radio, always had a song in the top hits, to being reviled. All the local radio stations tore them to shreds for how “unpatriotic” they were; they received death threats. Local stores stopped selling their music. According to the wiki people actually had bull-dozing parties for their cds, though I was too little to remember that.

But I can vaguely remember the radio commentary, even if mom mostly tried to change channels around it, and it was pretty vile. And at first as little kid, I didn’t really have the kind of life experience needed to process it. I just remember being upset that my favorite songs were never on anymore, and then mad because the radio stations kept calling them evil and I believed the stations must be right and I was angry they had betrayed my trust by becoming “evil non-patriots”.

It was actually my ex-dad who I finally told this to, and my ex-dad who told me patriotism had nothing to do with it and that the people calling the singers evil for saying they didn’t want a war were wrong. (Which is a little ironic to me since the person he is now would have been leading with the pitchforks.)

But it’s such a distinct moment. I can remember how unsettled I felt, how confused. It was the very earliest root of what would one day be an understanding that patriotism was something to be doubted, something that could be warped to be a mask and chain. It was the beginning of my earliest understanding of the words “witch hunt”.

As an adult, I’m not even sure how much I really like the music. But looking at the lead singer Natalie Mains and her willingness to call Toby Keith out on his jingoistic and ignorant bullshit, her place on the stage with Wendy Davis in the pink-tennis-shoes fillibuster, and that early sudden reversal, I always feel vaguely protective of them.

I think that creativity is a really tricky thing when you are first starting out as an artist and a writer.

To be completely original when you are first getting your roots in the soil and trying to grow? It’s challenging! And the rules to play by in this creativity game aren’t always the most straight forward- so that’s why I’m making this post.

I hope this will help put things in perspective for newer artists on how to honor those who inspire you rather than accidentally making them feel used or their ideas “stolen”.

Way back when I was a kid I first started drawing comics based on characters I was a fan of. Bub and Bob were an early favorite! There was so little known about the characters, so that left a lot of room for me to come up with my own stories about them, their past, their adventures- I think as an adult that’s one of the things that draws me to Undertale as well! There’s enough of a character to get you interested, but there’s a lot of unknown unwritten about them that you could write whatever you like, make your own comics- the characters were rich soil to plant ideas in and amazing things could grow out of it!

Is what I did as a child wrong? I don’t think so, learning from copying more experienced artists taught me a lot of things and added to the skill set that makes up the style I have now.

Making my own spin-off stories in the beginning weren’t all that amazing- but I was learning. I learned what plot lines worked, what interested other people, and from the bad stories I got better and better. As time went on I started making more unique and original things. Sometimes they were based on other peoples work- like my own mutants in the TMNT universe. But sometimes? I make characters that are totally original and all my own.

I think one of the big differences between me as a kid and the newer artists I see now is- quite a few things honestly. My first comics were on paper- the internet wasn’t as big then as it is now, so no one outside of close friends and family saw those. Without the internet, I was limited to mainstream media- but now really skilled indie artists are being seen by new artists and they’re learning from them, not just the mainstream media!

Yes, we have people we look up to- some ways to go about it are a good way to honor them. But some ways are insulting and can actually get the people who inspire you to dislike you! Artists of Tumblr aren’t a big mainstream corporation- the work we put into our characters comes from our love of creating those characters. We get “paid” in our followers liking and complimenting our work, in them joining us in the world we created, and sometimes if they’re creative enough they will help us add to it and make it even better and more diverse.

I think one of the more confusing things for younger artists is to realize that there’s a difference when you copy an individual artist’s style and characters compared to an established company’s characters and games. Perhaps one way to put it into comparison is, you see an advertisement on television for a shirt. You like the shirt, so you go out and buy it. That’s all good. This is kind of like when you draw fan art of a mainstream character that is in a commercial game or show. Now lets say you see someone wearing that shirt, and you really like the way they’ve accessorized it- you like their pants, the undershirt, their shoes, their haircut- so you go out and get all these things and come back looking like them.

Then you show up looking like that person who you think is really cool- They will see you looking like them and will probably be really uncomfortable you’re copying them! Yes, they didn’t make the shirt- just like us fan artists didn’t create Undertale or ninja turtles or Steven Universe or whatever your fandom is- and anyone can buy those things and wear them together- but you’re clearly copying them and the thing that they probably felt happy about representing them being unique and their creation is now being duplicated by someone else! It makes it feel like it isn’t theirs anymore- honestly like someone is taking away their uniqueness, their ideas, and it feels bad. But you are wearing your own pair of sunglasses, you copied some but you changed enough of it, right? It’s really not.

Unlike copying a model in a magazine, or making fan art of mainstream characters- you are copying a person’s identity essentially, you are copying their artistic embodiment of self! Someone’s personal artistic style has a lot more self poured into it, I’d even say the echos in myself that I write into my characters are so personal that if someone were to draw them and claim knockoffs as their own it’d feel the same as someone reading entries of my diary publicly and claiming them as their own. It’s not like a published book available at a book store, this is me! This is a part of who I am, and invested hundreds if not thousands of hours into making.

But someone inspired you! Am I saying you can’t learn from them? That you should avoid and destroy any artwork that looks remotely like things they’ve done? No, I’m saying there’s a healthy way to incorporate your inspiration from other artists into your own work, and there’s unhealthy ways. You should always ask permission to use a species or character that someone has come up with, or making your own heavily inspired work- ESPECIALLY if you RP and you hope to some day have your character interact with them- otherwise the original artist will be wildly uncomfortable with the situation you are putting them in!

Additionally, crediting the original artist or heavy inspiration is VERY important. It’s like saying, “This person is so cool, I was inspired.” and that is far far FAR better than seeing something that resembles what you created and hearing someone else say, “Yeah, I changed it enough to make it mine.

It’s like avoiding plagarism in a school paper, you read something and then just “change the words a little” and now it’s like you wrote it, right? No. This is incredibly insulting to the original artist, and instead of them seeing your spinoff and hoping they recognize your admiration- they will instead likely see you as a theif and not want to interact with you. The way you present yourself and your characters makes a huge difference! Even when I make spinoffs of mainstream characters I try my best to give the creators credit.

If someone has made something super neat and you are inspired and want to make something like it, if you feel inspired and you want to make things like they do, talk to them!

Talk to them BEFORE you make a spinoff character or species. Ask for permission from that artist. Often times, just being asked ahead of time if the artist is okay with you copying their work will give you a far different and supportive response than if they stumble across your ‘familiar’ character. One of the great things about the internet and Indy artists is that you can usually talk to most of them, give them praises, and maybe even ask them for advice or feedback as you try to become a more skilled artist. Maybe they are okay with you using some of the elements of the characters they created- ASK rather than TAKE! Heck,they might even give you feedback on characters you’ve created.

I’ll tell you one thing for sure, if the artist approved it before you used it they will be happier, you will be happier, and their friends are less likely to chase you with pitchforks.

So in conclusion, be inspired! It’s okay to praise and let other artists know they inspire you! Give credit where credit is due! Whether it is fan art or heavy inspiration, credit those you building from. Making blatant ripoffs counterfeits of other’s work without their permission is an insult not a compliment. Ask permission rather than just taking and modifying things from other artists you like- if they say no, respect that. And try something new on your own, or look for inspiration from other sources!
