i designed a sheikah outfit for josha like purah and robbie. they gifted it to her, but josha added the depths elements later because no one tells the president what to do.
i wanted to keep it in line with the modern sheikah's sense of style, with some allusions to their past ninja antics, hence the bandages and assassin's creed hood. all the better to slip out of lookout landing undetected. strict parents make sneaky kids, purah!

okay, but like.
i have not been able to stop thinking about how being trans works as a gerudo. bc i hate myself apparently.
like i don't think they count trans masc people as the "once in a thousand years" thing, bc it isn't mentioned. so i think being born "male" is a biological sex assigned at birth thing. but if the amab person transitions, then i think they just act like it never happened (yes this justifies a headcanon of mine, what of it).
so maybe they just have to leave town when they come out. which is tragic in its own way, and would be an interesting conflict to explore. like they'd never see their family again unless they leave town to visit. or they'd have to dress up in drag, or not be out to most of town except for a select few (obviously the voe clothing store is a safe space, and its how she makes money making them despite being in a heavily guarded city).
then the dreaded question arises: why don't we see any non femme presenting gerudo anywhere, in or out of town?
it could be that the game just isn't showing us them, sorta like the completely new characters (pelican man, sidon's fiance, josha, etc.) weren't anywhere to be found in botw.
also honestly nintendo are just cowards when in comes to representing minority groups with tact, especially in zelda and especially the gerudo.
so though it isn't explicitly anywhere in the game, i believe trans people are in it, until (but tbh even after bc aforementioned cowardice) they flat out say otherwise.
my current headcanons of characters we do see are:
nonbinary josha (all pronouns)
trans woman riju (it's been a thousand years, she could've been amab)
trans masc link (he/they) don't tell me some magic and/or ancient tech shit couldn't get rid of top surgery scars. also idk he's just got the vibe iykyk.

Link wanted to know just how tall Zelda was now, no matter what Link is always shorter than his princess apparently😅😂
Also, because I’m obsessed with details I actually measured her, Zelda is exactly 12 feet now! Add the antlers and that’s 13 feet

sometimes a family is a 150 year old eccentric genius who only uses her brain cells sometimes but is the only reason Hyrule is functioning, a 150 year old genius eccentric who is essentially a mad scientist and has definitely on occasion yelled at people to get off his lawn just for laughs, and their weird 12 year old with an obsession with hell who is definitely smarter than you

Linktober Day 13. Spirit.
Josha would love to see an actual Poe in person. Imagine the kind of research that would help her with!
Josha is an underrated and overlooked character.

Kaleidoscope
read on Ao3
words: 1620
As the early evening breeze blew past, Purah took a deep breath. The night air, somehow, felt so much lighter without the tendrils of red and black that had once billowed up from the ground. She looked out at Hyrule Field with the castle in the distance, still in ruin, some of their world still floating up in the sky.
Hyrule, broken and fractured and beautiful like a kaleidoscope, slept beneath the stars, the way it always had.

Adjusting her glasses, she hopped down the stairs and surveyed Lookout Landing. The people who had been staying here for refuge were now helping clean things up, offering aid to those who still needed it. At Princess Zelda’s request, Lookout Landing was still going to be run by Purah - her own personal research area with supplies for any passing travelers. She was grateful.
She caught a glimpse of white to her left, and peeked her head inside Josha’s study area. Inside, Josha herself slept soundly, with her head against Robbie’s shoulder. Robbie, having come back from the tech lab after Ganondorf was defeated, was tinkering with something too small for Purah to identify. She giggled at the sight, walking quietly closer to alert him of her presence.
“You look comfy.”
Goggled eyes lifted to meet hers, and he scoffed. “This was not intentional.”
Placing a finger up on her chin, she grinned cheekily. “Want me to wake her?”
“Are you mad?!” he hissed, like he hadn’t even considered the thought.
As much as he and Josha butted heads, as much as he tried to keep up the ruse of the old genius who cared for no one, she knew him too well. Purah smiled, this time perhaps a little more genuine, and walked over to the nearby chair to grab the blanket thrown over it. She knelt down in front of them, placing it over Josha’s sleeping form and Robbie’s legs. When he looked at her with a bewildered expression, she shrugged. “You’re not going anywhere any time soon. Might as well be warm.”
Looking down, a slight blush rose to his cheeks as he slowly lifted the goggles from his eyes. “Thanks.”
She smiled and stood up, placing a hand on her hip. “Anything for you, partner.” Turning to leave them be, she paused for a moment and spoke over her shoulder. “Y’know, I’ve missed experimenting with you.”
There was a moment of silence, only broken by a small sigh. “So have I.”
“Will you think about staying at Lookout Landing with Josha and me? The tech labs will survive on their own.”
He sighed again. The weight of their century apart  was heavy in the air. “Very well. If that is what you want.”
Purah smiled to herself, straightened up, and turned around to face him. “Josha will be delighted to hear that. I look forward to everything we’ll explode together.”
Robbie’s brows shot up, before making way for a grin. “Just like old times.”
Giving him one last wink, she turned and headed back outside, feeling a bit lighter once more. Much to her surprise, a certain old lady stood beside the entrance, talking softly with her guard. Purah grinned and rushed over, waving as she did so. “Impa!”
Turning around, her sister greeted her with a warm, tired smile. “Hello, Purah. You look well.”
She smirked, popping one hip out to the side, gesturing with her hand. “You look…old. I can give you some of my anti-aging rune, you know.”
“Ah, I’m quite all right. I’m still just as spry as I used to be. Cado here is the one who could use some youth. I often leave him in the dust.” As she chuckled good-naturedly at her own joke, Cado huffed a half-hearted sigh, perhaps indicating that she was right.  After she finished chuckling, Impa waved her guard away, telling him to rest or grab something to eat. Perhaps not wanting to argue, Cado left the two alone, but stayed close enough to still keep an eye on Impa.
Purah watched her sister for a moment, wondering how long it had been since they’d seen each other. Despite her aged body, it really did seem that Impa was in good health. She was relieved.
“Now that Paya is in charge of the village, I expect you’ll come visit me more often, little sister,” Purah teased lightly. “I hear you’ve been traveling all over Hyrule.”
Smiling lightly to herself, Impa glanced up at her. “Not for any good reason, mind you.” After a brief moment, she shrugged. “I suppose I can make the trek here every now and then.”
They nudged each other with their elbows, the way they used to when they were kids. Purah couldn’t help but remember that Impa had hated when she used to do that - now it was a sort of comfort. They were so different from who they used to be, but they were still Impa and Purah.
Suddenly, three figures emerged from the shelter - two of which were very familiar.
“ - was just so wonderful, Mubs,” Zelda was saying earnestly. “I do hope you’ll share the recipe with me.” Followed behind her was Link, quiet as ever, and Mubs herself, dusting off her clothes. She chuckled softly.
“I’d be honored, your highness! It was my grandmother’s recipe. I’m so glad you liked it. And you have your brave knight to thank for recovering the ingredients I needed from Lurelin Village.”
Link gave her a polite nod, and Zelda’s smile grew as she looked over at him. “Oh, Link! So that’s where you disappeared to earlier! Thank you, that was very kind.” He reached up, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly like he often did around her. Mubs thanked them both again and bid them good night, and Zelda turned to face Link fully. Before she could say anything else, a horse whinnied restlessly from the stable. Immediately, Link rushed over to the stable hand to help him calm it. Zelda looked on with a rather fond look on her face. After a moment, she seemed to sense someone watching, and turned, blinking in surprise. “Oh! Impa, Purah, hello!”
She walked over to them with a bright smile. Impa greeted her first. “Hello, princess.”
“Hey, princess. Nice to see ya!”
“You, too.” She bowed her head slightly in greeting, clasping her hands behind her back. “Wow. I don’t think I’ve seen you two together in…”
“A long time,” Purah answered for her, placing a hand on her hip.
Zelda chuckled in response, looking between the two of them as if she were afraid either one could disappear at any moment. Impa reached out, placing a shaky, wrinkled hand on top of Zelda’s. “How are you faring?”
She seemed thrown off by that question, and Purah couldn’t blame her. It was probably a loaded one. Still, she managed to handle it with grace. “I am…all right,” she answered, seemingly honestly. “It’s all been so strange…I don’t remember much of what happened, but having Link with me makes me feel like…like everything will be okay.”
“It will be,” Purah replied, as Impa suddenly gained a glint in her eye that only lasted a moment. “Ganondorf is officially gone.”
“Y-Yes. You’re right,” Zelda agreed, just as Link approached from behind. She glanced over her shoulder, and her body language instantly changed to be much more relaxed. “Ah. Did you calm the horse?”
He gave her a nod, then turned his attention to the other two, lifting a hand to wave.
Impa let go of Zelda’s hand, a pleased smile pulling at her lips. “Hello, Link. It’s good to see you.”
“Hey there, Linky!” Purah stepped forward, giving him a noogie. “How’s my favorite swordsman?”
He cried out in surprise, but it soon turned into a slight laugh. When he pulled back, he gave her a wry smile, signing, “I don’t know. Ask Hoz.”
With a laugh, Purah rolled her eyes. “Just as funny as ever, I see.”
“Have you been taking good care of the princess?” Impa asked, raising a brow at him.
“Of course. It’s what I take most seriously.”
She seemed pleased by that answer, but Purah noticed a slight blush rising to Zelda’s cheeks as she laughed slightly. “Okay, okay, no need to bombard Link with all that, Impa. Like Purah said, we’ve nothing to worry about anymore.”
“Yes. You should be resting,” Impa agreed, smiling up at both of them. “You look tired. You two ought to go home.”
Zelda frowned. “But -” Gently, Link’s shoulder nudged hers. She blinked, looking into his eyes for a moment - clear, blue, full of care for her. She sighed softly. “Oh, very well. Purah, we shall be back first thing tomorrow to help continue clean up.”
Tapping her hand to her forehead and outward in a salute, Purah grinned. “You got it, princess. Linky, get her home safe, y’hear?”
After mocking her salute, a cheeky grin pulled at his lips as he took the Purah Pad out, using it to travel them both back to Hateno.
After the blue glow disappeared, Purah and Impa exchanged a look. The latter spoke first. “It seems, even after all this time, nothing has changed.”
“Yeah.” Sighing softly, Purah tapped her chin lightly. Even when he had no memory, he would have done anything for her. And Zelda was always happiest and most comfortable with him. “I wonder if they’ll ever tell each other how they really feel.”
Impa chuckled softly, leaning slightly against her sister. “Perhaps they already know. Perhaps this is enough.” Purah placed her arm around her gently, glancing up at the sky. Beneath the stars, they smiled.
The kaleidoscope smiled back.
