I think game studios should just release their character creators online. For the times when I don’t wanna play the whole game, just the lil dress up part

If Link’s parents played TotK
Tilieth would be the one gathering information with Traysi and would find all the outfits and make them both fashionable and practical:
Tumblr media
Abel would be going around freeing villages from the gloom issues and fighting hordes with the soldiers and wondering if he’ll finally just lose it and do the exposition for the sages so he doesn’t have to listen to the same dialogue twenty more times:

okay this has been going through my mind for days and I have to get my thoughts out before I explode
Disclaimer, this is not talking about a specific artist/person and would never condone or participate in anon hate or online bullying for any reason but especially this one.
I get why people are mad about Link being portrayed as this buff, hypermasculine, tall guy. I am too (again don’t fucking attack people over it though) and it seems like such an infuriating way to change the character just to fit into some ideal of hypermasculine attractiveness or to make a ship fall into a more hetero lense by making him a decent foot taller than whatever girl he’s being paired with.
The world of video games and action movies and every form of media ever is extremely saturated with male characters that are swole and manly and whatever other descriptors people are trying to push onto Link that don’t fit into his actual character. There are so many characters out there that already fit this male standard and having a clearly androgynous elf guy was like a breath of fresh air.
Link was literally designed to be a character whose lines on gender were blurred, ‘a girl with a masculine touch or a guy with a feminine touch’ so that anyone could project themselves onto him. His physical design in botw/totk was specifically made to be feminine enough to wear a certain outfit to pass as a woman (which includes a nearly mandatory cutscene where he puts on the clothes and blushes after being called pretty, like you have to be blind to think that its an experience that he doesn’t like at all) and in totk there are a bunch of outfits made for Link that are blatantly gnc, ones that are practically dresses, include nail polish and lipstick, you can even dye his hair bright and vivid colors and that’s half way to giving him new pronouns. The whole reason Linkle isn’t included in more mainline loz games was because her existence would force Link into a gender dichotomy, if there's a clearly female version of the main hero, that means the main hero has to be a man, and they would rather abandon a potential reoccurring character than make Link conform to a gender binary.
So pardon me when it feels disingenuous and even malicious for him to be morphed into these clear masculine ideals, where he towers over any female romantic partner (even when in canon he is regularly depicted as noticeably shorter than her) or even in m/m fanworks he’s really beefed up, perhaps to make the scene feel more gay or something.
Perhaps it’s because his more twink-y/ femboy body type is so heavily sexualized (though obviously when people are sculping abs on him it’s totally not because they’re horny about it) and that’s an issue in itself that bothers me. But it’s just so tiring to see one of the very few popular main characters who is short and feminine and androgynous be molded into just another bland muscle-headed action hero over and over and over again.
I’m not mad at the creators for portraying him differently than how I like him portrayed, I’m mad because we really do get so few characters like him in good popular media, and to be honest, I really like him the way that he is. I love that he’s tiny and has long hair and has the option to dress any way the player likes. It seems a little distasteful to make him taller than a female love interest just because that’s how straight couples have to be, there’s just never been a real straight couple where the guy is shorter than the girl, that’s just Impossible! one of my biggest frustrations with botw/totk is the dyeing. the fact that the clothes Can be dyed but not all of them. and for many sets only a small portion is dyeable and the dye colors rarely harmonize well with the other colors. torturous to me specifically. id rather have a slightly more thorough set of options or nothing at all because the dye system as it is now feels like being aesthetically edged. the outfits i could make if i had full control over the color palettes.... good god. i understand that there are truly few things lower on dev priority for this game than the dye system but. god i want it.

Made some good kids in the Sims! Post-TotK, Link has a nifty replacement prosthetic made by Purah and they're living together in Hateno.
Trans woman Link, doesn't have physical dysphoria and doesn't mind being topless, does firmly insist upon being gendered correctly (turns out her amnesia in BotW was quite helpful in forgetting both her social anxiety and being closeted). Enjoys playing around with her looks, was introduced to kohl by Vilia, and thinks bright colours are fun (she's one of the dye shop's regular customers). Generally practical stuff she can fight, explore, or cook in, but she does enjoy dressing up for special occasions. Her canon outfit is based on the default one I use of the Champion's Tunic/Leathers, Hylian trousers dyed orange, and diamond circlet.
Zelda tends to stick with a more limited palette of blue and white, and tries to keep to more practical outfits suitable for her roles both as school teacher and researcher who sometimes scrambles around ruins. She's slowly poking at exploring her gender and thinks that 'no thank you, not for me' (read: agender) works pretty well. Still uses she/her and presents fem socially, but she likes the idea of playing around with androgyny, perhaps?
Zelda has the Archaeology Scholar aspiration, traits are Bookworm, Perfectionist, and Socially Awkward, her Likes include the colours blue and white, Japanese folk and singer-songwriter music, photography, research and debate, and writing, and Dislikes include Strange Tunes, cooking, and pipe organ (OoT lore joke!).
Link has the Master Chef aspiration, the traits Goofball, Adventurous, and Glutton, Likes blue and orange, alternate, Americana, blues, Japanese folk, singer-songwriter, and world music, and baking, cooking, fishing, and rock climbing, and Dislikes Strange Tunes as well, and cross-stitch, knitting, research and debate, and writing (just doesn't have the attention span/ability to sit still. As well as being t4t, she and Zelda are also nd4nd - Zelda is autistic, Link ADHD).
Their official relationship status is 'betrothed'. And this time, they've graduated to a double bed!
Tumblr media
Currently living in Cordelia's Secret Cottage in Henford-upon-Bagley, it's not a bad replacement for the Hateno house! The well is just decorative, but I will be making a secret study for Zelda beneath it.

I think this one is a long shot but I would adore Nintendo if they added some kind of transmog system for weapons in TotK.
For people who aren’t familiar, Transmogrification (commonly referred to as transmog, tmog, xmog or simply mog) provides the ability to replace the appearance of your armour and weapons with those of other items or to hide certain pieces of armour. Basically, get one thing to look like another while keeping all its stats and abilities. One great example of this I always go back to is Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. That game allowed me to use the extraordinarily ridiculous magical, godlike armours and weapons all while keeping the appearance of a simply dressed humble mercenary.
I want this for BotW and TotK. I love the designs of the weapons in BotW, but the looks of the glowing golden bows, oversized Lynel swords and giant military shields don’t really do it for me. To me, there is nothing more pleasing to the eye than those little wooden painted shields that break after two hits and are surprisingly rare. The Emblazoned, Hunter's and Fisherman’s shields? Absolutely charming, they fit right into the look of most of Hyrule. And there’s something about those colourful little Rito bows that call to me so much more than those practically indestructible Lynel ones that look like they are breaking Link’s spine. But those Rito ones are not too common, and before I know it, they are gone.
This could be something that works. Perhaps something you can unlock on a second playthrough? Like a new game +, they have done ng+ before after all, in Wind Waker. The weapons are categorised into different types already. Bow designs would be easy to transmog. Things like Boomerangs are locked to Boomerangs, Two Handed to Two Handed, Hammers to Hammers, Spears to Spears, and so on. If the bow you are redesigning shoots x3 arrows, or x5, redesigning it won’t change that. And maybe you can unlock Zelda’s bow after ng+ even. The Master Sword can’t be transmogged, and perhaps not the Magic Rods too? What do you think?
We all play this game in different ways, our Link’s are all unique, and I want to see that reflected in what weapon designs we choose to have on our backs. I love customisation in games like these, I just think it would be a great feature to have, or unlock or whatever! If we can dye our clothes in a shop, we can ‘redesign’ them in a shop too, for a few rupees?
Well, the weapons break anyway. So I was thinking about that too. Perhaps there could be a way to lock in a certain transmog? “Do you want to change the design on just this weapon, or pay an additional 100 rupees so that every “Royal Guard's Bow” looks like “Duplex Bow”? I just love being given options. And with some weapons being a lot rarer but not necessarily stronger or more powerful (cough cough Zora Sword) this could be a good way to play around with those weapons a bit more.
Also I think it would be fun to fight off enemies with a soup ladle that is actually an Ancient Short Sword. I just think this would be a nice added feature.
And honestly? A NG+ wouldn’t exactly kill Nintendo. Even if it’s just one where you have all your outfits already, and all their chests are just replaced with rupees. That Hero of the Wild set is so charming, but it just takes so much work to get it, and once you do, you’ve practically done everything there is to do.

ToTK (minor spoilers, only early-game. I won’t spoil much for the story after the first area, but I will mention some locations and characters, though only a few. But I MUST express my gratitude and appreciation for this wonderful work of art online).
Tumblr media
You’ve been warned. Continue at your own risk. (I haven’t even finished the game’s story so I can’t possibly spoil any of that).
Anyway, I’m absolutely blown away by the sheer scope of this game already. Like, not only are there the sky islands, but the Depths?? They didn’t mention this ONCE before the game released, as far as I can tell, and I loved how it caught me completely off guard!! That area is petrifying, and trying to navigate a pitch-black void with only a handful of lights, pins, and whatever machine you can cobble together is so much fun, that’s been one of my favorite areas of the game already and I’ve barely scratched the surface. And the Frox jump scared me so bad, I leapt into a pit and it just SOARED and ate me in a single bite…
Also, the return of the Yiga Clan throughout the land is everything I hoped for. They don’t ambush anymore along the roads, which I appreciate, but they still set all sorts of traps for Link and have secret bases all over the map. There was one location in particular I visited, which I won’t say the name of here, that had me both sentimental and laughing hysterically. And another few that were completely different than how I imagined them in the best way possible.
Next, I’ve absolutely adored seeing the characters. Both returning characters from BoTW and new additions, they’re all wonderful and just as real in this game as they did in BoTW, not to mention that I think the character designs and dialogue is even better. It was so fun running into people I recognized from the first game and having them recognize me in turn. And seeing how different areas have changed after the Upheaval is equally jaw-dropping.
Speaking of jaw-dropping, I’m loving what I’m seeing of the story so far. It feels much more satisfying than BotW’s memories did, and feels like it carries more emotional weight (even though I did like the BoTW memories). They just seem much more substantial, I love it. And Zelda’s new design is killer, absolutely my favorite look Zelda has ever had. SSBU Zelda is a close second. And Link’s new outfits, or those I’ve found so far, are so unique and different! They’re a completely new style, and as something of a Hyrulean fashionista, I can’t get enough of it. The amount of time and money I’m gonna spend in the dye shop will be astronomical, especially with the new paragliding feature.
But, by far, my favorite part so far is diving and gliding around the sky islands. It just feels and looks oh so cool. And devising a Totally Trustworthy Contraption to navigate is really fun. Ascend and Ultrahand have so much potential, I can’t wait to make some wacky devices. And fusing weapons is exactly the spark that BoTW’s weapon durability system was missing, it feels immensely rewarding to kill a strong monster and use its horn to take down the next foe, or create a club to break ore and rock, or a long spear to poke Like Like’s from a safe distance. There’s just so much to do in this world, and I am fully immersed.
Anyway, that’s all from me. I hope nothing I wrote was too much for you, and I sincerely apologize if I mentioned something you didn’t want to hear about. But I put out a warning to the best of my ability.
To any of the team who worked on ToTK, I hope some of you see this. You did an amazing job and your hard work absolutely shows in the finished product, it’s immaculate to a BotW fan such as myself.
DLC when?? DLC when?? I have pockets that are not, as of yet, drained of cash.

some things that me so mad with totk because they were RIGHT THERE:
- The Sages can block... this by itself makes sense as they are trained warriors after all but... Sidon and Yunobo can block with 2-Handed weapons... WHY CAN'T I BLOCK WITH SPEARS AND GREATSWORDS?? Just make it cost durability on the weapon I don't care, you know how COOL it would be to be able to block with a spear, imagine if you could PARRY WITH A GIANT FUCKING BOULDER BREAKER THAT'D BE SO SICK.
-Similarly, Riju can block AND duel-weild. WHY CAN'T I DUAL WEILD? Make it so you can dual weild 1-Handed swords, or even make it unique to the Gerudo Scimitar type weapons, allowing you to fight 'Gerudo Style' with the fluid movements. I know Link is supposed to be a master swordsman, and he's already pretty proficient with the Spear and Greatswords, but why not go the extra mile and show how much better he's gotten in combat the last few years between botw to totk by letting him block, parry, and use 2 swords.
-Why isn't every piece of armor upgradeable? i understand that finding the phantom armor set early, or the amiibo pieces can be useful early on, but they still have the problem of being outclassed. this really shouldn't be a problem the second game in.. like I'll GLADLY hunt, fish, and kill WHATEVER i need to in order to find the parts to upgrade everything, I don't mind, I actually REALLY enjoy it. Why would you put the Evil Spirit Set in the Labyrinths but then have the Radiant Set just be available for Purchase in Kakariko KNOWING FULL WELL YOU CAN'T UPGRADE THE EVIL SPIRIT SET??? It's like this game actively punishes the reference items for no reason? like, they have the same abilities just make them upgradeable. Same with Dyeable while we're at it. There's only 15 colors make everything Dyeable, I want to make cohesive outfits out of the existing armor.
-this one is kinda personal but Yiga enemies shouldn't spawn when wearing the Stealth Set. HEAR ME OUT. The Yiga got A LOT of love this game, we get their outfit which we can upgrade and dye, we get to visit their hideouts, there's a lot of bonus dialogue for coming across 'Traveler's and 'Researcher's while wearing their set, there's their bases in The Depths. It's a great day to be a Yiga fan with all the bonus interactions you get with the Gerudo too. On the other hand the Sheikah actively got pretty much all traces of the Ancient Sheikah Tech taken away, and their part of the main story is locked out until you beat the regional phenomenon, and then you basically just move on to the Zonai 5th sage bit. The Sheikah got so shafted this game. The Stealth Set has a little bit more armor in comparison, but the Yiga Set ALSO gets the Night Speed Up bonus, plus all the bonus interactions AND no ambushes, there's no reason not to wear it over the Stealth Set imo...

ok i /was/ going to like. replay all of BOTW before i returned to TOTK
and i have really tried to be fair to BOTW - despite the UI, despite the weather, etc. - and not judge it on the basis of it having a smaller world, different runes, and less transportation options
but........ man.
i feel like most of my time spent in BOTW is just.... grinding. ok, time to hunt. ok, time to go get luminous stone to sell for money. ok, time to kill 500 guardian stalkers in a row to get 2 (two) cores.
whereas in TOTK i was like "oh! this area looks fun, let's go over here!" and get naturally distracted about 10 times. and suddenly i have food, and items, and i've found two or three shrines. y'know? the progression just feels more organic to me. and i feel more immersed in the world
also my two biggest Things with any open world game re: immersion/enjoyment are:
does this character feel like my own
can i make myself at home
and what i mean by these is actually "can i customize the appearance in some way" and "can i collect trinkets that i can then physically interact with and decorate a house with them"
and TOTK like. destroys BOTW in both metrics.
like yes. BOTW has a house. but it feels like the game punishes you for wanting to collect things for the sake of collecting. whereas TOTK is like "you get 15 house slots. do you want all of them to be weapon display racks? enjoy your 45 item museum."
and because of fusion i can just. stick things to shields if i want to. including beautiful flowers or stuffed animals. i know if i see an item in BOTW that it will live in my inventory if i'm lucky, and that i cannot interact with it AT ALL upon removal. let alone put it in my home.
and then for the customization like. obviously link is link and he's his own character. but you can style his hair differently. you can dye his hair. you can choose to wear outfits that obscure his head entirely. you now have much more femme options than in BOTW. and when i play link, i feel like i'm playing him in my own way. i've always headcanoned the hero of the wild as being nonbinary person with a fluid presentation. so it feels like link is allowed to be more... Link. and it's also fun for me, as a femme man, to walk around hyrule and get gendered as male while also being able to dress feminine
botw i just feel.... very disconnected from. and i love the guardians and the music and the shrines and honestly, even the divine beasts although i agree that they are repetitive. but i actually liked the water divine beast in BOTW more than the water temple in TOTK. and i honestly don't even really mind the slower travel and having to manually climb mountains in BOTW.
and i truthfully thought that, in replaying it, i would gain a new appreciation for it. but i'm just... getting burned out by the gameplay loops. and i might allow that if my Two Things were met, but they aren't. and so it feels like a very empty experience for me
