Aro's affections had been genuine, but they were entangled in a web of deceit and treachery that could only lead to destruction.

As she walked through the deserted streets of Volterra, (Y/N) couldn't ignore the truth any longer. Her heart ached with the knowledge that she must break free from the allure of Aro Volturi.

Their love was a forbidden dance, a dangerous game, and she had to protect herself from the darkness that threatened to consume her.

With every step she took away from the Volturi castle, (Y/N) knew that her life was irrevocably changed. She had been entangled with a vampire, and now she had to find a way to escape the shadows of their ill-fated love.

The days turned into weeks as (Y/N) tried to distance herself from the haunting memories of her time with Aro Volturi.

She had left Volterra behind and found refuge in a quaint village nestled in the heart of Tuscany, hoping that the peaceful surroundings would help heal the wounds of her past.

Yet, no matter how far she traveled, she couldn't escape the memories of Aro's touch or the feeling of his crimson eyes locked on hers. They haunted her dreams and followed her like a shadow during her waking hours.

She had known their love was doomed, but the lingering ache in her heart was proof that it had been real.

One evening, as she sat in a rustic cafe sipping her espresso, (Y/N) overheard a conversation at a nearby table. A group of locals was huddled together, speaking in hushed tones about a mysterious series of disappearances in the area.

It seemed that people had gone missing without a trace, and fear had settled over the village like a thick fog.

Intrigued, (Y/N) couldn't help but eavesdrop on their conversation. The descriptions of the missing individuals were chillingly familiar – they all bore a striking resemblance to her lost love, Aro Volturi.

Her heart raced as she considered the possibility that Aro and his coven had come to this peaceful village in search of her.

As the locals shared their stories and fears, (Y/N) realized that she couldn't hide any longer. She needed answers, closure, and a way to protect herself from the darkness that followed her.

(Y/N) couldn't ignore the growing unease in her heart any longer. As much as she had tried to convince herself that her relationship with Aro Volturi could work, the doubts had become too overpowering.

She needed answers, closure, and most importantly, the truth.

She found herself standing outside the grand doors of the Volturi fortress, her heart pounding in her chest. The darkness that had once intrigued her now felt suffocating, and she couldn't bear the weight of it any longer.

With a determined breath, she entered the fortress, her steps echoing through the grand halls.

Aro was waiting for her in his opulent study, surrounded by ancient books and artifacts that spoke of a long and storied history.

His regal presence was undeniable, but it no longer held the same charm it once did. (Y/N) had seen beyond the surface, and she was ready to confront the truth.

"You wanted to see me?" Aro's voice was smooth, his crimson eyes searching her face.

(Y/N) squared her shoulders, her voice steady despite the turmoil within her. "Aro, we need to talk. I can't ignore the darkness that surrounds you anymore. Every girl I ever talked to warned me about you, told me you were bad news. And you know what? I called them crazy, just like you did. But now I see it. I see the way you manipulate and charm, the way you lie without flinching."

Aro's expression remained composed, but a flicker of something unreadable passed through his eyes. "My dear, you must understand that this life is not for the faint-hearted. When we first met, you willingly entered into this world, fully aware of the consequences."

"Yes, I made that choice," (Y/N) replied, her voice laced with determination. "But I didn't fully comprehend the extent of the darkness that would consume us. I didn't understand the toll it would take on my soul, on our relationship."

Aro leaned back in his chair, his gaze fixed on a distant point. "Love, I am who I am. My nature is ancient, and my desires run deep. I am not a man who can change his essence."

"And that is precisely the problem," (Y/N) said, her voice tinged with frustration. "You take no responsibility for your actions, for the pain you inflict on others. You dismiss it as the price of power, the cost of immortality. But at what cost? How many hearts have you shattered, leaving a trail of broken souls in your wake?"

Aro's eyes hardened, a glimmer of anger breaking through his polished facade. "You knew what you were getting into, (Y/N). You cannot blame me for your own choices."

"Perhaps I can't blame you entirely," she conceded. "But I can blame myself for ignoring the warning signs, for falling for your charm and lies. I hate the way I called those girls crazy, when they were just trying to protect me. I hate that I allowed myself to be convinced by your words, your promises."

Silence hung heavy in the room as both (Y/N) and Aro absorbed the weight of their words. The truth had been laid bare, and there was no turning back.

In that moment, (Y/N) realized that she had to make a choice. She could continue down this treacherous path, risking her own sanity and heart, or she could find the strength to walk away from the darkness that threatened to fully consume her.

With a newfound resolve, (Y/N) stood tall, her voice unwavering. "This ends here, Aro. I refuse to be another casualty of your darkness. I will find my own light, my own path."

Aro's expression remained inscrutable, but a flicker of regret passed through his eyes. "If that is your choice, my dear, then I wish you well. But remember, once you venture into the shadows, they have a way of following you wherever you go."

With those parting words, (Y/N) turned on her heel and walked away, leaving the fortress and the darkness behind. It was a difficult decision, but one she knew was necessary for her own survival.

As she stepped out into the sunlight, a sense of freedom washed over her. She had confronted the shadows, faced her fears, and now it was time to rebuild and rediscover herself. The road ahead might be challenging, but she was ready to embrace the light and leave the darkness of Aro Volturi behind.

A Star Wars sequel trilogy AU: Same actors, totally different story

Five unlikely heroes are embroiled in the conflict between a criminal gang and decommissioned Imperial troopers when a package is mistakenly given to Rey, an unassuming mechanic, instead of its correct receiving courier. When she’s targeted by the syndicate for its disappearance she stows away to the system the package was sent to in an effort to retrieve it, further entangling herself and the crew of the ship in the web of conspiracy and black market dealings that starts to unravel around them.

The ship Rey steals away on is manned by a crew of cutthroat bounty hunters now targeted by the pursuing gangsters, who reveal a hostage in the form of Paige, sister of the bounty hunter pilot Rose Tico. In order for Paige to go free they must retrieve the package from the planet it was sent to, in a territory ruled by ruthless magistrate Finn and his closely guarded community of guerrilla fighters.

Finn, a strategic and calculating leader holding a longstanding grudge against Imperial troopers, reluctantly agrees to aid Rey and the crew of the Mardji in their search when he realizes the now-missing package puts his people at risk of being targeted by the encroaching Imperials-turned-mercenaries. However, before the package can arrive in port the ship goes down over the wilds of Takodana; Finn, Rose, and Rey are forced to set off in search of the downed ship when they realize both the syndicate and gang of mercenaries are now in pursuit, and either of them retrieving the relic is recipe for disaster.

In the catacombs of Takodana, Poe Dameron searches for answers that will explain his mysterious past when he is led by a prophetic vision to an artifact deep beneath the ruins. When he touches the artifact it binds itself to him in a brilliant flash of light and shows him a vision of his old friend Paige in grave danger: Paige, longtime treasure hunter and con artist, had discovered the other piece of the artifact now bound to Poe’s wrist and intended to steal it en route to a crime syndicate before it was mistakenly sent to Takodana. Though Paige thinks she’s outwitted the criminals by allowing herself to be held ransom, Poe now knows the extent of the relic’s power and what it will be capable of in the wrong hands if both pieces are brought together. It isn’t long before those searching for the same relic begin to close in, and Poe must now contend with the powerful artifact and the effects it has on him.

The adventure that follows brings together allies old and new, forcing them to race against the clock to save kin, community, and their comrades-in-arms.

And I think that’s a wrap!

I started this series as an exercise in character design, swapping out action figure pieces to see who worked best with costume changes and what kind of characters or story I could come up with based on those characters and their potential interactions. The story pitch developed as I came up with each new character and idea, the aim being to find a plausible Star Wars movie idea that was entirely separate from the Skywalker lineage, Jedi, and Empire storylines while still using the same actors in different character archetypes. I’m satisfied with the end result 😊

Some director’s cut notes:

I wanted to elevate Finn’s character to one of an established leader and make him the most community-focused/connected of the group, in addition to being the most cerebral and strategic. I kept the flavor of being in opposition to the remnant Imperial troopers based on what he may have experienced personally in his youth regarding them, with the backdrop of Tatooine’s concept art circa The Mandalorian’s timeline providing the tone.

Finn’s jacket here is actually the vest portion of Cassian Andor’s figure from Rogue One! Finding a different costume or silhouette for his figure was difficult as most pieces didn’t fit or look right, so I went with the altered jacket and color scheme instead. His sleeves, which were not removable, have been dusted with eyeshadow to match the coloration (Eyeshadow can be layered better and in finer particles than paint, and is much easier to remove without ruining the paint job of the original figure)

Rey’s still a mechanic and still has a staff, but her changed character allowed for the staff to serve a dual purpose in that it’s a mobility aid as well.

I almost didn’t have Paige Tico in the story until I remembered her (I’ve only seen The Last Jedi once) and bought the figure on a whim. I was very satisfied with her costume swap as I think it makes for a realistic and fun adventuring outfit combining elements seen in westerns with practical climbing gear, and the ‘escape artist’ part of her new backstory is an allusion to her being able to escape dangerous situations when all hope seems lost. While in canon she was unable to survive, in this universe it is implied that she always will.

Paige and Rose shoot with opposite hands so when they stand together side by side, they’re able to shoot together

The name for Rose’s ship The Twin Mardji comes from a Vietnamese folktale of the Trưng sisters who led a rebellion against Han Chinese authorities in Jiaozhi, going into battle on the backs of war elephants. Veronica Ngô and Kelly Marie Tran are both Vietnamese, the term ‘twin’ is just meant to refer to Paige and Rose being sisters, and Mardji was the name of the Asian elephant that portrayed the bantha in the original trilogy. In this universe my idea was that the ship belonged to both girls, they were forced down different paths in life, and now Rose has a debt she has to work off to her crew. Paige intended to pay that debt with the money she received from fencing the Macguffin

Poe was the most difficult character to come up with a costume for just because his head was disproportionate on a number of other figures and I really wanted to find a different character type for him outside of the typical roguish adventure hero since the Han Solo types were the only bodies that really fit. While I still wanted his character to have some sense of action to fit in with the story, making him the Force-sensitive/magic user/sage and researcher helped me play around with some more ideas outside of the adventurer archetype and I think Bib Fortuna’s cloak realy helped change his silhouette and make him different than what his character is/was characterized as in both canon and fandom. I think it’s fun to cast against type and it forces me as a writer to get more creative and see how I could make a convincing, fun, and unique character that could be played in an interesting way by that same actor. (I also wanted to find a character type we don’t typically see a lot of Latino men playing in movies or shows, especially considering part of the stereotyped backstory they gave Poe’s character in the later sequel movies.)

I had Takodana in mind while browsing some of the concept art early on anyway and I think the architecture and flavor of Maz Kanata’s castle makes for an interesting backdrop with a lot of opportunities— It was only after I did some research did I find out Takodana really is a nexus of the Force!

I do think after Martyn and Sausage has gotten Scott to their base, Sausage wants to make a nice, hot bath for Scott but Martyn has to convince him to use cold water instead and at first, Scott isn't too hyped about the idea

but as Sausage helps into the bath, he gets the overwhelming surge of diving into the water. so he dunks his head under the water a brief moment and just lets the coldness wash over him, it feels like a nice, deep breath of fresh air. and then he gets to enjoy Sausage massaging his scalp and being pampered.

meanwhile Martyn tries to formulate a plan to convince Scott to come into the water with him, but he don't want to force him...

Look - this plan's been a century in the making.

Martyn has spent decades in the water, floating, nomadic and alone. He's taken this weird aquatic state that the Coral Isles left him and he's tried to make the most of it - tried to forget about the lover that left him behind.

Everyone else? The friends whose corpses he'd dragged out of the shallow rivers where they'd fallen and into the forest before setting the whole damn thing ablaze, mansion and all… They're in the past.

And Scott left - walked away, somehow. Took one look at the narrative, at their tragic end, and decided that he was better off stepping out of it, and then did. The border let him leave, when for the last few hours (was that really all it had been? Twenty-four hours? That felt wrong, but it was true) they'd all been trapped in there fighting for their lives.

Martyn sat down, feet in the water, and waited to die.

But the clock hit zero, and he just… didn't. Like the Watchers had gotten bored without their Romeo and Juliet to watch as they pulled each other apart in desperation and hunger and love. Like the narrator had been locked behind a door, and Scott had vanished with the key in his pocket. Like he was left, alone, in a universe made for his story, without anybody to direct it.

So he surrendered to the waves, and hoped to drown that way - hoped to go out cold and numb, and maybe surrounded by filtering rays of sun from the surface, by something beautiful.

He didn't die like that, either. He took a breath, and another, and it wasn't from his lungs.

Once he'd transformed, it got a little easier to forget the past he'd been forged by. Friends and alliances and enemies and lovers - they were all surface stuff. Underwater all Martyn had to worry about was his next meal, and watching his fingers and toes gradually web over days and weeks and months, and avoiding sharks or whales or whatever else lurked in the depths that were his new home.

There was always something missing, though. Some other half, some bigger whole of him that felt just out of reach. The Coral Isles hadn't claimed just one victim, after all, had they?

He didn't even die like this. The thrashers never caught him, and his food supplies never dwindled quite enough to starve him out, and Martyn had a feeling that even if they did he'd be alright. Years passed.

And then, quite suddenly, something else hit the water, and Martyn knew him already.

That should have been impossible. Scott, if he wasn't dead, was clearly dead set on never touching the sea, if this was what it led to. But Martyn knew that feeling, knew every curved lip and quirked eyebrow of his lover, knew the space between them intimately.

This was that space - just a little further than usual.

But Martyn knew exactly how to close it.

He surfaced just off a dock, and was promptly scammed out of the only property he owned - two raw cod - by someone who looked a little too familiar for comfort. There was chatter about factions and glory and money and family and legacy, and Martyn let it all wash past him, because he'd felt Scott here for the briefest of moments, and he wasn't about to let that go now in the name of some buccaneering fantasy. He kept haunting the various taverns of the isle, always blasé when people asked him if he'd chosen a faction, but always staying on their side.

By the end of the evening, he'd found exactly what he was looking for. It took another few weeks to get this new Scott alone with him. Not very long after that, he was being invited out with Scott and another guy, which didn't exactly hurt his self esteem, but wasn't super helpful towards the goal.

It was kind of weird - it wasn't the same Scott he'd watched as he left, but it wasn't not him either. They had the same voice, the same smile, the same beautiful eyes, and he was even complaining of "grey hairs" that Martyn clocked immediately as shades of blue coming in like new buds after frost. He wasn't what Martyn was used to, but he sure was getting there.

The only thing really keeping them apart was the fact that Scott was very touchy about the subject of the sea.

Eventually, after much plying, and many rounds on Martyn (who knew pirates left so much treasure lying around at the bottom of the sea?), and a few particularly forward promises, Scott gave up the truth. He'd never been allowed to swim as a child - yes, never! - and had tried recently, and it hadn't gone well. He did want to try again, but he was just a little scared that he might fare even worse if he did.

In that moment, Martyn resolved that Scott would never need to worry about the ocean again. Sure, yeah, he was pretty sure that what had happened to Martyn all those decades ago was maybe like three months max away from happening to Scott, but that wasn't something he needed to worry about, not if Martyn could help it.

Smash cut to now - he's played it a little too slowly, taken a little too much interest in Scott's comfort now over his projected comfort in the future, and it's too late. The guy's started having breathless moments in the street because he doesn't have the sense to stay at home when he's feeling faint and dizzy. Thank the sun god Martyn had heard him complaining earlier and headed down to the docks to grab some emergency seawater.

Scott sits semi-conscious on the toilet seat lid, and Sausage is trying to argue that he should get a warm bath of all things. Martyn kind of wants to bite his head off right now (oh, hello, creature-of-the-deep instincts, we thought you were left at the shore), but he's so nice about it instead, and just gently insists that the cold water will help better after the… heat exhaustion… Scott's just undergone.

Sure enough, his lover - more blue streaked with red now than red streaked with blue - settles luxuriously into the cool of the bath. Martyn can almost see his gills fluttering, but of course those aren't quite ready to pop yet. It's been a long, long time since Scott or his blood came close to the magic that turned him. This process, too, is long and gradual.

The captain smiles, worry still written plain on his face, and helps Scott's head back up and out of the water. Scott confirms that he does, in fact, feel better already, and he would love to have a little rose oil if Sausage has any going spare. Of course, "Anything for my treasure," Sausage replies, and he pops out of the room to go and grab the fragrance from his vanity.

Scott drops back under the water, maybe not even realising that he's doing it, and smiles, content. Martyn leaves him to soak. He's on his way; everything will be fine.

Martyn just needs to get a little more serious about convincing Scott to try swimming again when it's not a matter of life or death.

Knock knock, KaiOS.

The ephemeral taste of innovating nearly obsolete bricks might be reaching its inevitable demise.

Despite the recent boom of feature phone sales over digital minimalism and dopamine detox trends, the future for KaiOS remains bleak as they fail to be consistent with their promises, thus miserably lagging against established giants in the market.

The good start

KaiOS is a partially open-source operating system developed by the Hong Kong-based company, KaiOS Technologies Inc. It was initially released in October 2017 and was forked from Boot 2 Gecko. Their name is from the Chinese for open – 开 (kāi) which “captures the idea of being inclusive.”

In just one year, they have overtaken Apple’s iOS as the second most popular operating system in India, with Android remaining on top, despite losing their 9% market share. In that same timeframe as well, they managed to sell around 450 million devices worldwide. Furthermore, their platform is compatible to WhatsApp, Twitter, YouTube, Google Maps, and Google Assistant.

To oversimplify things, KaiOS took the Boot 2 Gecko code (based from FirefoxOS) and modified it to run on hardware similar to that of feature phones and added the KaiOS Store. Other than that, they also implemented recent innovations that are becoming today’s standard, like 4G LTE and 5G, GPS, and Wi-Fi. By doing so, they effectively just created a separate phone segment, which some people call as the quasi-smartphones or smart feature phones.

KaiOS specifically chose the hardware present in their devices for an appealing approach to developing markets, like India and Pakistan, to bridge the digital divide and bring cheaper internet access. They removed the touch screen which they consider as the most costly part of the device, and replaced it with a cheaper T9 keypad input. Additionally, their devices only need 256MB to work and are also compatible with cost-efficient Spreadtrum chipsets.

What went wrong

By doing so, they effectively avoided the mistakes that Mozilla made. They chose a target audience first and offered them a product. They made an operating system out of the web but used that as a tool rather than the end goal, the latter being their approach to the digital divide. But not all products are perfect on their own, as their approach is a double-edged sword.

The T9 keypad meant that the apps had to be optimized to work on such inputs. Likewise, dissimilar to FirefoxOS, not all webpages can run on KaiOS devices due to hardware restraints. Such disadvantages make it an appealing short-term solution while their users save up for better entry-level Android devices.

Platform immaturity

The platform is still quite immature, despite five years since its initial launch. Some users claimed that their devices sometimes cannot receive calls, and crashes on related functions constantly. The battery also does not live up to its expectations and provides a ‘disappointing’ performance. Additionally, the calendar’s sync and date functionality is unstable, the alarm clock doesn’t ring from time to time, and the lack of note-taking, file browsing, multitasking, and wide audio format support. Besides, the platform lacked proper app quality control, bug reports, and feedback system, along with a slew of advertisements. Perhaps, the most lambasted functionality of the platform is the T9 input. Users characterized the input as slow and unreliable, thus ineffective for efficient user interface navigation. The predictive text input, which might sound good, is something they’d rather have disabled due to its restraints such as inaccurate suggestions and buggy input.

Some have mentioned that users may be over-estimating KaiOS and pitching it against smartphone platforms. Then on, we can’t deny that a platform still has to be stable and reliable, albeit hardware-restricted. Some went on to compare the system to its older counterparts such as Nokia’s Series 40, Microsoft’s Lumia, Vodafone’s MobiWire, and Blackberry’s Blackberry 10, which the users characterized as more ‘stable.’

Unfortunately, version 2.5.4 onwards faced a downward trend as certain apps were no longer maintained and supported, due to the decrease of development activity. For instance, the optimized Google and YouTube apps have been pulled out from the app store, around the same time as the update. In version 3, WhatsApp support has already been dropped and new app submissions to the store also plummeted. Google Assistant, the primary tool for users to voice type and issue commands (albeit stripped-down in comparison to Android), also dropped KaiOS support last June 30, 2021. Some users reached out to the company regarding this matter, to which they replied that they are developing an in-house voice assistant alternative. Until now, it is nowhere near worldwide coverage, given the limited devices it was shipped upon.

The company and its partners

Even more worse, the problem rests beyond that. The project development of has been consistent enough until the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the company’s blog statement “the growth was still not like how we achieved in the pre-COVID times, but these numbers and new partnerships are going up and in the right direction in this second year of the pandemic.”

In 2022, the project updates has since then plummeted. There weren’t any major announcements across all their social media platforms, even from the company website. Their Github repositories are no exception as well, as they still haven’t received any commits until now. Their only active repo is the gecko-b2g, which serves as the operating system base.

It is not implicit that their users are complaining about the bugs and speculating on the project’s downfall but it seems that they have no proper public relations and customer support as the company fails to actively respond to these messages.

Nokia

Nokia, or should we say, HMD Global has been a primary partner of KaiOS Technologies over the years. They manufactured the higher-end devices of the platform that were considerably the most popular in KaiOS’ lineup, such as the Nokia 6300 4G, Nokia 2780 Flip, and the Nokia 8110 4G.

Regardless, their approach is somehow vague as enthusiasts are confused over what their target audience is supposed to be, and what were they trying in the first place. Their approach started with the reboot of their classic devices, so it’s safe to assume that their target consumers are the ones who are nostalgic over their retro bricks. HMD, for a matter of fact, might have just been the worst example of a KaiOS partner.

Their devices are the most expensive ones of the platform, almost close to the entry-level Android Go smartphones. HMD Global has also been long criticized over the failure to deliver software updates from KaiOS to their devices, as they provide only about a year of support for these. The users also cannot help to complain over the significant bloatware present in such a limited hardware they provide.

Just recently, HMD Global took a step back from this approach and cherished their barebones Series 30 and Series 30+ platforms once again. Their last KaiOS device is the 2780 Flip from November 2022 and was then on followed by a series of Android Go and dumbphones from their C and 1xx series. In a reply to a user inquiry, they reportedly blamed KaiOS as the Google Assistant support for the platform was dropped.

Alcatel and TCL

Alcatel and TCL are also major partners of KaiOS. In fact, TCL Corporation is the largest shareholder of KaiOS Technologies. Both of them are popular for their Go Flip line. Despite the successes of Go Flip 1, 2, 3, and V, they didn’t get to experience the luxury of getting updated to the latest version of the OS, unlike the Go Flip 4. A user reached out to the company, to which they replied that they are still planning to serve these said updates to such devices, although there is still no update to talk of until now. 

Unfortunately, similar to HMD Global, they seem to be diverging away from the platform as recent releases from both manufacturers are focused on midrange to high-end Android devices, as well as the Tab series of TCL.

Jio

The Indian telecommunications company, Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited is the catalyst of KaiOS’ takeover against Apple in the country, all thanks to their aggressive marketing approach. They offered the competitively priced JioPhone for free to their users who are subscribed to their data plans.

Unluckily, even Jio is also straying away from KaiOS. There have been rumors that the JioPhone and the JioPhone 2 have been discontinued, as they are no longer sold. They last received the version 0258 update back on May 22, 2021, and clearly missed version 3.0 by a long shot. On June 24, 2021, Reliance Jio announced the JioPhone Next, a budget Android Go smartphone made in collaboration with Google. Recently this year, they partnered with Karbonn to release the Jio Bharat K1 Karbonn and V2 to provide access to UPI payments, Jio ecosystem, and cheaper 4G to the rural areas of India that remain untapped by recent advancements in technology.

What happened?

Fast forward to August 2023, users speculate that the project has already died out due to lack of activity and stagnation since the release of 3.0. Their company's social media platforms are inactive, except for the usual, seemingly AI-generated content every national holiday across countries. On the other hand, KaiOS Technologies partnered with the cybersecurity firm Trustonic to expand their device affordability efforts in Africa. There have also been infrequent new device releases for the platform, such as the AT&T Cingular Flex in February, Cricket Debut Flex in June, and Logan Technology’s Panita this August. Truth be told, I find this section rather short and lacking. Unfortunately, I could say the same for the company’s recent efforts. Nonetheless, I hope that things eventually get better. As users worldwide expected a reliable feature phone platform, all these issues contributed to a downward trend of interest for KaiOS.
