"are you drunk, or just on the verge of death?" grunge boy of the school asked at keigo's party as he watched your fingers tapped against the small glass cup repeatedly.

"i am death. and maybe a little drunk," you responded almost immediately as he pours whiskey into your cup, causing you to sit up straight and raised a brow at him. "are you encouraging me?"

dabi snorts and downed his own fair share of whiskey. "yes. i wanna see the darkest angel of death losing all senses of reality."

"weirdo," you commented and sipped the whiskey, the strong flavours running down and burning your throat before you let out a gasp and coughed a bit.

"strong, isn't it? it's jack daniel's," dabi asked and poured himself more, drinking it like it was merely water to him.

of course the grunge kid would be expected to drink so very often. all they do is destroy themselves on the inside and possibly out as well. that's your view on grunge kids anyways.

it's the same for him. he sees you as an odd creature rather than human— someone who drinks blood and eat souls. he refers to you as a freakish reaper of his death, and it always sounded like music to your ears.

"i'm assuming you're not going to drag me out to a cemetery after this party and, i don't know... crawl into my skin?" dabi asked, his gaze locked onto your black-stained lips as it presses against the glass cup to sip on the whiskey.

"i will, now that you suggested it."

"that's hot— crawling into my skin n' all."

and you wondered just why your words couldn't get dabi to stay away from you. if anything, he finds you extremely fascinating and unique, that fact drawing him close to you everytime. despite you slurring in your words while you're almost on the road to drunkenness, you're still pretty deadly to him.

but that's okay. dabi likes to meddle with death anyways.

One thing I love is to see how people defend Dabi( no sacaram here) and say how he was emotionally neglected by his parents - if not worse, bc if Endy can do that to Rei...why he wouldn't beat Toya?- and those people usually ignore how Izu endure smth very similar. Being bullied/abused since he was 4 years old.

It's jarring how Izu is so similar to villains: Dabi and Shig. But the LoV stans hate him and make fucking edits and shrugs they can hate him, he is fictional as dabi and shig are.

But is so fascinating to me the framing of MHA. At the first chapter ....we see BK as a PoS but then...it's all a gag. Dabi's backstory wasn't show as a one but Dabi is evil and Endy was right in his everything.

Like...MHA has a victim blaming that is so fascinating to study(so you won't do the same mistakes)

Bk can do whatever he wants with Izu bc hahaha is a gag. See? Izu is so fine (he thinks he is worthless. That never changed, no matter if he is dating freaking Ochako or not)

Toya and his sibs are abused by endy but ...is ok once endy got all he wants...he will redeem with his family.

Its just the LoV stans who harpy how society is evil...aren't seeing how true this is on by the chapter 1. Izu IS AN ABUSER VICTIM. Let down by many people, even AM. No one wanted to help him and....it would be the easiest thing to do...but no one did.

And I know fanfics like to explore QUIRKLESS discrimanation and you do you but to me...what makes this cruel and unfair is how....Izu's abuse has no "explanation" BK did all he did bc...Izu is weak. Nothing more.

His mother is Inko.

His father is dead and Mia for all we know.

He is not rich

He has no friends.

He has freckles. (Japan is not a monolith, but some asian countries including Japan do think freckles as ugly)

A perfect victim....like Rei, like Toya. But Izu can't be anger...ever.

Since there is no endeavour mention that does mean endeavour quit being a hero even after toya's dead ? Honestly I'm glad that hori didn't mention anything about endeavour in the bonus chapter but i wish he had included a scene of rei leaving him and having a moment with shoto.

I REALLY liked that Endeavor wasn't mentioned or shown in Ch 431.

I think this is the best way to show the meaning of their parting words to each other:

Endeavor's "you don't have to watch me" and Shoto's "I'll be ok because Class A will be there for me".

Endeavor did retire - he said as much. And basically from Shouto's pov, it doesn't matter what he's doing. You can really get the sense that Enji just doesn't occupy that much space in Shouto's life or mind anymore.

And I feel like that's a fitting conclusion there - Endeavor, who spent so much time grooming and suffocating Shouto is just not that important to him anymore. It's what fandom wanted already after the Sport Festival and it took us a long time to get here.

And I also think it's important that the ONLY person Shouto mentions from the family is Touya.

In the end, Touya was the person who challenged Shouto's way of thinking and beliefs the most and I think it's fitting that he's the one pushing Shouto to fully step outside of the framework Endeavor created for them and start thinking not just what kind of hero he wants to be, but who he is as a person beyond a hero, who could he have been in a different life, what choices would he have made.

As for Rei - yeah, I was hoping for a re-write but in the end, her part remains unchanged. She had the potential to be a fascinating character, but ended up as fodder to boost Endeavor.

Take Aways:

Jester offering to feed someone paint supplies as a healing method? No notes.

Caleb being delighted by books? Adorable. I had forgotten how much earnest joy and dry humor he had at the start even while being a sad little wet cat of a human.

Matt lucked out that the cast didn't go "SING TO ME MY ANGEL OF MUSIC" and sing half of that song from Phantom of the Opera like I did at home.

Beau is not proficient in Rock Throwing.

It would have been fascinating how much it would or would not have changed Beau's character if she had killed Toya.

Honestly, amazed Caleb doesn't get downed more often early in C2. Given how often I'm scraping Gale off the floor in BG3, it's really pretty impressive Liam kept him up through so much of the early level combat.

Why This Fucking Rules Actually:

- echoing tsukasa’s first character arc (focused on himself & what he stands to gain from wxs and emu/nene/rui -> growing to care about them as his friends & being willing to give up the commercial chance/lose the show contest for the WMS show). It’s the selfish & selfless aspects of his character we see over and over again. Tsukasa *is* egotistical and selfish. Sorry! I’m right. A lot of what he does is self serving & he tends to focus on himself. He’s just also capable of being very selfless. Which in turn benefits him. & This isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

He loves & desires attention and fame. He wants to use that attention and fame to make other people happy. He wants it to be *him* (& wxs) making other people happy because it comes with attention and fame. He wants to put on good shows because it gives him what he wants and he enjoys it. He’s responsible and helpful and kind to others because that is what his idea of a star is, and because he likes being viewed that way and the gratification that comes from it. He compromises and gives up what he wants and does things for others because that’s what a star would do, so that is what he will do. He is selfless because he is selfish. He is selfish so that he can be selfless. He is a fascinating critter & a paradox of a man.

That being said, the one person he consistently values over all else, above shows & fame, has always been Saki. Tsukasa “the grind never stops” “tried to go to an acting gig with food poisoning when he couldn’t make it out the door without collapsing” Tenma skips practice when she’s sick. Rui (+ nene iirc) is shocked that he’s actually a really good older brother (twilight musical parade). He wants her to be happy more than anything. Saki is the most important person in his life. She’s his number one fan & centric to his first step towards improving at acting (torpe event) for a reason. He would not be who he is, where he is, or have his current goal & motivations without her.

Before he wanted to be a star he wanted to be a good big brother, & being a good big brother is so important to him that it has essentially been baked into what his idea of a star *is*. It has quite literally shaped his entire personality. It’s natural enough to him that even as someone who loves to be praised he will go “? That’s just normal though I’m not doing much” when Saki or Toya comment on it (his SOAD 2*, Akito’s initial 3*, Toya’s doll festival 4*, etc).

Tsukasa’s fragment sekai is based on a book he read with Saki when they were kids. It’s about a brother doing The Most to make his sister happy. He goes into the situation thinking about acting by trying to figure out the weird expression on Hiro’s face, & finds out it’s an expression near tears that is only weird because Hiro never shows it to his little sister. Tsukasa spends his time in the fragment sekai helping Hiro be a good older brother. His last words to Hiro are praising Hiro for all he’s done and encouraging him. & tsukasa does figure out what he was trying to figure out! But that’s less important to both the viewer and Tsukasa than helping Hiro.

Nene, Rui, and Emu’s fragment sekai were about their dreams & what they value most - Nene wants to be on Broadway and grow with her friends by her side, Rui wants to put on incredible shows and continue to be with the people who accepted him, Emu wants to carry on her grandpa’s legacy and make him proud (and I think it was deliberate to release emu+tsukasa’s fragment sekai cards together given that saki is to tsukasa what emu’s grandpa is to her).

Just as you can’t separate Tsukasa’s character from Saki, you can’t separate his goal of becoming a better actor and future star from his goal of being a good big brother. His relationship to Saki was the catalyst for his dream, & that’s pretty clearly why they chose to make his fragment sekai reflect this. They’re emphasizing one of the most crucial and often overlooked parts of his character. And it was a fantastic decision.

Tsukasa fragment sekai card they could never make me hate you. Keep sitting there in your boring little costume eating your stupid slice of bread Tsukasa. I love it & will defend it until my dying breath. I’m cheering and clapping and hooting and hollering and whatever other words describing applause fit.

He doesn’t really know what to do— it’s honestly not even something he was fully aware of until you came into his life. Yes— he knew they happened, but he had no idea what that entailed.

As long as you’re willing to ask for what you want or need, be it— a heating pad, chocolates, pain meds, a new blanket, etc. He’ll be at your beck and call (albeit with some complaining)

Honestly he’s a little fascinated by the whole ordeal— why does it hurt? Why are you bleeding? Why can’t you control it?

The fact that your body was built that way kind of infuriates him.

Though, if one of your common symptoms is sore breast tissue, he’ll have a good amount of fun with it.

He does not care. Like the most he would do for you is use his body as a form of heating pad.

He’s in some kind of internal pain 99.999% of the time, so as far as he’s concerned you should just suck it up.

He says it isn’t him, and keeps that same “get over it” attitude, but it’s pretty clear to you that he doesn’t want you to be in pain or uncomfortable.

He may be a dick but he still cares in his own way.

This guy is not going to be much help. He’s a cuddle bug, but he’s constantly freezing, so he can’t work as a human heating pad.

3. List your top five favorite characters in order of how much you like them.

This would've been so much easier to answer when I was younger asjdla I'm old now and have more of an appreciation of character writing and roles in a story and I find Toriyama's character writing so charming... I love Vegeta the most but I like Piccolo the most you know what I mean?? Okay I'm gonna try, let me. Okay. Vegeta and Piccolo and Bulma, obviously, Gohan and Trunks probably after that? Yeah. Probably. My emotional support supporting cast.

10. The Dragon Ball series isn’t exactly known for being consistent with its story, its characters, and various other things. Which inconsistency irritates you the most?

I think the thing I'm probably most known for in this fandom now is screaming about how Toei and Toriyama wrote two completely different series' with two completely different casts while sharing the same basic plot. It does genuinely upset me that the former is the version that's most accessible, just because the latter is so, so good. I'm very grateful he decided to do the movies he did and overhaul Daima before he passed, and I'm so happy to see that Yuko and Toya seem to have learned a lot from his tone and humor and adventure writing skills to continue playing in the world he left behind with the full heart for that kind of story that he had.

15. Do you have any favorite ships (canon or otherwise)?

I like all of the canon ships! I also like the TienxYamcha QPP and the TienxYamchaxLaunch reverse Three's Company sitcom situation in which they're both into Tien but Tien's aroace, I think Satan and Buu are cute regardless of where on the spectrum their relationship falls, I like Trunten, I like CauliKale, I like the various Beerus ship dynamics I've seen with Whis and Kai, I think Cheelai should meet Launch,

20. If you could hang out with one character, who would it be?

Ooo~! I think--!! I'd love to hang out with Gohan, but also I feel like my adhd would kick in while he's explaining bugs and I'd feel bad, plus he's always swamped. I think Hercule would be super interesting to talk to if he could turn off for a while a be a person. I also think hanging out with Whis for a day could be a pretty safe and interesting day. Mmbbuuuut I think I'd have to give it to Dr Brief, because I want to hang out with him in his giant animal sanctuary full of dinosaurs and god knows whats.

24. If you could write your own episode, what would it be about?

I think I'd write a flashback episode just kind of about what it's like inside the Freeza Force. I'm really fascinated by the hyper-capitalism/imperialism critique there and the self-sustaining economies of a Freeza planet Metropoles that Freeza will build and then get bored with and abandon, and doing a character-driven snapshot of the entire political system within just Freeza's empire would be super fascinating to me. I think I'd write it from Lemo's perspective, at different points of his life. He was there for so long, you'd probably get to do a lot of cameos of people who worked for Freeza even before Vegeta was born. And he was kitchen staff, so it wouldn't be a big high-octane thing but he could still bear witness to fights, which would satisfy the action element of the show too.

25. What would you wish for with the dragon balls?

I'd wish for every conservative politician in the world to wake up with everything exactly the same except their body is the opposite sex and nobody else knows they were different before. After 120 days, the ones who want to go back to their original bodies will be allowed to and the ones who are happy with their new body can keep it. Call it an empathy exercise.

I can't help but imagine Enji actually having a very different reaction to heroes. He would have grown up in a pre-All Might time. It would be fascinating to know how people and especially kids would react to modern heroes. Because Enji? Enji already hates the hero = idol culture of today. So remove his filter because he's a kid? He'd be cussing out pro heroes left and right. Oh and he's actually going to run and find safety when a villain attack occurs.

Some vain hero: You should bask in my presence!

Young!Enji: And you should have evacuated the civilians first you idiot!? And you definitely shouldn't have led the villain to where we all were!?

Hero: But how would the camera crews capture my magnificence?

Young!Enji: You are a hero. If it wasn't for that winged guy half of us would be dead and it would be your fault. Lives are in your hands. Treat this seriously or just don't leave the house.

Okay but HONESTLY I JUST

I'm gonna go off on a fucking TANGENT FOR A SECOND

Because a lot of people just don't. Don't get /why/ Enji wanted the #1 Hero Spot. So many people, especially the downright haters, frame this as just seeking fame and glory.

But it's kinda the opposite!

Because yes! He grew up in a world pre-All Might! Enji was already in middle school by the time All Might became the #1 Hero. He knows very well what things were like back then, and everything that All Might did for others.

The #1 Hero spot isn't about fame and glory. It's about proving that you're the best Hero. That you're capable of actually making a difference in the world and saving people. For a guy who lost everyone he loved, ofc that leads to an obsession over something that says 'yes, you're good enough'.

It's why Enji focuses far more on doing his job than the popularity, though he does understand the 'give the public reassurance' thing enough to do public stuff ofc. It's just that he wants the #1 spot through genuine Hero work, not showboating.

Like. Even with the kids! Do you have any idea the kind of popularity boost he could've gotten if he decided to whore them out like some instagram mommyblogger? Sure it wouldn't've been enough to beat All Might, but it would've been a fantastic attempt. But no, the kids are kept out of the limelight as much as possible. Toya and Shoto make the news on their own later, but for things they actually do. His focus on using them for his own goals are "I'm not enough, I will never be enough, but I can create someone who will be able to actually be a Hero in a way I can't."

But also Yeah baby Enji would have such beef with modern Heroes showboating. Even worse than his current self because a 7 year old doesn't have a grasp on the 'some of the showboating is done to reassure the public that things are safe'

Two things, one I absolutely understand messy ships having the own appeal because I did not like DabiGeten until it was revealed they were related and suddenly that was my fucked up shit to indulge in.

Two, I do not see NatsuDabi on any of those lists and just wanted to get your take on that if you're up to sharing. Because honestly putting Dabi under a microscope for study just means things like that potential fucked up "you're the only one that saw me even if you couldn't help me" attachment is right there for me to sink my teeth into.

1. That's so valid and also absolutely hilarious, I hope you have fun!

2. Natsuo/Dabi is a fine, messy ship. TW: suicide: Like Natsuo, who has been angry and guilty for years because he couldn't stop Toya's death, suddenly having Dabi back in his life could be fascinating. Like pre-LOV Dabi appearing to him and asking him for little favors here and there, coming and going like a ghost, and Natsuo always trying to hold onto him a little longer to get him to come home. But Dabi always pulling away. And then Natsuo having to grapple with it when Dabi tries to get him into bed to 'help stop the pain' and him being disgusted, but this is Toya, this is his big brother. He was supposed to help him and he failed all those years ago, he can't turn him away and fail now. Dabi coming back whenever he feels like it, taking food, money, sex, and leaving Natsuo alone in his apartment, vomiting and then trying desperately to scrub the smell of smoke from his skin and sheets. Dabi just progressively turning him into more and more of a ghost until Natsuo wishes that Toya was haunting him instead because at least he would be able to live with himself then. Dabi finding his brother hanging in the apartment and burning his suicide note so that Enji has to grapple with another kid gone and this one he won't even know why.

Uh, but yeah, that's an okay messy ship, but if I'm going to ship Dabi with one of his siblings, I would get way, way more mileage out of ShotoDabi, which is why I left NatsuoDabi off the list!

VBS because the four of them tend to idealize their respective partner. They all spend their time thinking they're not good enough and wishing they could be like aibou. Akito has a whole damn song talking about how he feels he's falling behind and that song mentions TheMoon (DerMond) and Winter. Toya also mentioned feeling like he finally reached Akito's level in SBD after Period of Nocturne, when we know all this time Akito already felt not-good-enough. Kohane look up to An since the second they met and An is so self-explanatory that I won't even elaborate.

So thinking of them waking up in their respective partner's body one day is just hilarious. They would get panicked, confused, maybe try to reach out to their team or maybe not. And then I think their first thought would be to try singing with their aibou voice. Out of curiosity, old habit because they have to practice no matter what, but also because they can finally live the dream. They wished they were more like aibou so much all the time and now that wish is granted.

But I also want to see them hit walls and get stupidly stuck. Makes stupid mistakes. Trying to sing like they usually do and realise it sounds off. And getting frustrated and wondering why only to come to the realisation that their voice is the opposite of Aibou's one and that singing the way you usually do with their voice won't do. And that it goes both way. So it finally click on their mind that their voice is unique and that they both complete each other. That they don't need to become like the other but to become themselves at full power to support Aibou.

You also need to wonder about their family's reaction. Kohane would maybe tell Ken directly while An would make a pathetic attempt at pretending to be Kohane. Toya would act too much like himself, leading Ena to wonder WHY IS MY BROTHER SO NICE TODAY IS HE SICK ?? And there's probably a lot you can do with Mizuki in Mafuyu's body at Mafumom's house but I struggle to imagine it. Overall I wonder which of those two would act like the other the best (Mafuyu is used to pretend and act but not in a Mizuki way and vice-versa. But they're also both scarily good at grasping eachother, I think.)

And now that I think about it, I think ShizuAi also has that 'I wish I were you' trope at the start of the game... ShizuAi swap... Mmmh....

Project Sekai and his duo pairing in each team really gives room for those kind of thoughts.

I don't know about l/n and WxS. But what about l/n and WxS swap. Shiho waking up in Tsukasa's body, living the dream. Or dumb stuff like this. Honami and Emu. Nene and Saki. Ichika and Rui. Everyone swaps in way that feels painfully wrong and chaotic.

Because if you swap Tsukasa and Saki they can just pretend to be the other super easily. Same with Shiho and Nene. And it's at the same time way funnier and way more boring.

Ichika and Honami are doomed, tho.

Something else I’ve realized about Endeavor and why I came to love him as a character so much. He is very deliberately a take on the  “Vegeta” shonen rival archetype just as All Might is on the “Goku” shonen hero archetype (though ironically, Vegeta’s present and most well recognized dub VA voices All Might). But it’s one thing to fulfill a role like Vegeta’s or be kind of like Vegeta in small, mostly superficial ways. Vegeta is easily one of my top favorite characters in Dragon Ball, and I can tell few of his successors have truly replicated him.

Endeavor, though? The Endeavor we meet at the start of MHA is right on the path that Vegeta was in the Cell Saga. He is Vegeta if he took a darker turn for his future. Think about it; had the events of the Cell Saga not played out the way that they did and the only carryover is that Vegeta learned that the time traveling Super Saiyan was his son from the future, Vegeta would think about the power that his son had, the power that took out Freeza and King Cold with ease, and eventually determine “even if I cannot surpass and defeat Kakarott in my lifetime, I can raise my son to surpass him and his entire family!” So he’d become a father to Trunks like Enji was to Toya and his other kids, and probably only slightly better to Bulma than Enji was to Rei (Vegeta never found Bulma worth assaulting, but if in a dark place mentally, he likely would still be very emotionally and verbally abusive to her.) He’d remain the monstrously cruel and prideful Saiyan Prince he’d always been, and his family would pay the price.

Vegeta and Enji Todoroki are the basically the same person, with post-Cell Saga Vegeta being his Good End and Endeavor being his Bad End. Endeavor has only in the more recent chapters come to learn what Vegeta was able to discover and accept long ago. And while Vegeta can only keep getting stronger as Saiyans will do, Endeavor has shrunk down to size, outshone by the rest of his family.

It’s such a fascinating contrast of two atoning monsters, I love it.

Tbh I think a case could be made for An having fun while being a hall monitor. It's just this type of fun:

/j but I also think while she was Sick of it she didn't completely hate it because if she did she'd just... Quit. Like maybe not outright quit but she would have the gut to way "Hey I'm not doing this anymore" to her committee and I think they'd be fine with it. Soft quitting her committee duties like she did in On your feet!, she could do that much earlier if she didn't enjoy at least some part of the job but didn't. Which has to count for something. And also Rui and An both had fun at the cheer squad which you could plausibly tie into the song. But it's not happening anyway so it doesn't matter I'm just rambling lol. Also Akian flopping is entirely too funny. They flopped at their archive cover because Akito sounded So Bad and the mixing was terrible and we still don't know what happened there. Their Egoist duet was so bad the game actually had to re-do it because they skewed line distribution and Akito basically got to only sing back vocals to An (which I thought was funny & girlboss & queen move of her but yeah objectively it wasn't great). In comparison to these ones Echo is fine but it's very early into the game launch so neither of their VAs have "got" the role yet so it just kinda sounds awkward. I'm twirling my hair and sighing and giggling at this phenomenon because How Does This Keep Happening. Like they usually are on the "ok" to "amazing" scale when singing lines together in regular comms/covers but the moment they're left alone something goes Wrong. Fascinating.

(also I think even with fixed line distribution their Egoist cover is Not Good which is not surprising given the fact that I think it was Imai that said they had a lot of difficulty with singing Gekokujou's repeated rhythm parts and Egoist has a lot of those? I'm not sure who said that actually but eh. But An slayed the solo Gekokujou anything so we still don't know why this happened)

YEAH… like was it a blast for her no would she do it again also no but if she really truly despised doing it she would probably also hold at least some animosity towards ruikasa. I think the first part works well for rui and an and then as the song goes on it fits less and less.
