Spock would have been a pre-Reform poet.
no essay. but! I thought that would be interesting so I wrote a fic with the premise, having some worldbuilding fun with pre-Reform (or rather, non-Reform) Vulcan poetry, poetry scene, rituals and Stuff. Believe it or not, it's not all just elaborate foreplay.
Yes, Fuck the Government
Rating: Explicit
Vulcan, a dangerous civilization of enormous military power, has entered tentative negotiations with Starfleet. Vulcans, however, are passionate, violent and unpredictable and, though the current autocrats are still strong, there is unrest brewing in the capital. When the Starfleet delegation lands, Captain Pike urges their subordinates to do a little reconnaissance in their spare time. Lieutenant Kirk stumbles upon Vulcan poetry that has been known to start and end wars; and then, after some trial and error, upon a poet. * It is essentially a… cautiously M-rated poetry reading and then some gratuitous sex. Also Jim gets an autograph.
ao3 link again 🥰 enjoy!

I think there’s an argument to be made for all of these. And I’m sure there are many others I missed!
For bonus points tell us which scene / scenes make you think the identity is cannon.

Hi! Sorry if this is too specific, but seconding the novel question except what I'm looking for is:
1. Bones! Preferably NOT a straight Bones, at that, though any is good.
2. Uhura my beloved *heart eyes* Literally anything with her as protagonist.
3. Spock and his relationship with Vulcan. Also any trans, non-binary or gender non-conforming Spock.
4. Jim being KIND and NOT A DICK. Jim being a total nerd and a teacher's pet and a total softie because I love him he's my sunshine. But also, Jim and Tarsus. Getting "over" Tarsus, his relationship with the other survivors, struggling with food on his day to day life, and having a beautiful support network that has his back.
I already have Doctor's Order on my to-read list, and I absolutely get it if all of this is too specific, but. yeah.
Anyways thank you for running this blog!
1. the only books i can think of are doctor’s orders and the romulan way. i’ll be honest, i’m not a big spones shipper and i’m really not up to snuff on tos books where he may be not-so-straight. i’m sorry!
2. uhura’s song you’d probably like:
Tumblr media
3. these books delve into vulcan lore and spock’s upbringing as a vulcan:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i’m not really sure on any trans, non-binary, or gender non-conforming spock books. now mind you, i may have read tos books where he was what you’re looking for but i cannot remember. maybe someone could offer some recs in the comments if they know of some?
4. these books offer a more in-depth experience of what happened on tarsus:
Tumblr media
i have not read collision course but i remember looking up tos books where jim’s experience on tarsus was expanded upon a bit more and found collision course
also: here’s the covers of doctor’s orders and the romulan way which are the only two mccoy-centric books i can recall:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
kirk and spock are my favorite characters so i will admit i gravitate more towards books where they are the main focus

Pronouns and Gender in the Good Omens Universe
Neil recently said: “Angels aren't humans or mortals. They don't have genders. There isn't a pronoun you can use for them that's wrong, and unless you can speak in the tongue of the angels there's not a pronoun you can use for them that's actually right. Ditto Demons.”
Obviously, no one's going to debate Neil's pronouncements about the series! The thing is, though, that CONSISTENT gendered pronouns are used in the book, and in the series, and by Neil himself when referring to these characters. There's significant gray area here, no matter how you slice it. So...
(Who are we?
@Princess-Spock: I'm non-binary, specifically genderfluid. My pronouns are they/them for simplicity. My primary gender is agender, and is aroace; I have a wide range of other genders and sexualities.
@Twilightcitysky: I’m an allosexual, queer, cis woman with a background in healthcare, specifically sexual/reproductive health and mental health.)
Pronouns, ideally, should reflect gender… but what is gender? Gender is something we feel inside our heads. For most people, that matches up with their genitals… But not always!
Genitals do NOT determine gender!
Therefore:
A transwoman is a WOMAN, regardless of what genitals she has.
A transman is a MAN, regardless of what genitals he has.
A non-binary person is non-binary regardless of what genitals they have.
A genderfluid person might sometimes have gender that matches their genitals, but at least part of the time does not. (A gender that varies in intensity rather than going between genders is genderflux, not genderfluid.)
A couple of those terms need to be clarified:
• Non-binary means not having a “binary gender,” in other words not being one of the 2 most familiar genders, “exclusively male all the time” or “exclusively female all the time.” (Remember, bi = 2.) Non-binary does NOT mean being genderless! A non-binary person could be genderless/agender… or they might have partial gender, mixed genders, fluctuating genders (fluid or flux), xenogender, or non-specific gender.
Note: Not all non-binary people use they/them. Like everyone else, they get to choose their own pronouns. It's never acceptable to assign pronouns of your choosing to them, or to assume that they must be they/them without confirmation.
• Genderfluid means having a gender that changes periodically; a genderfluid person can have any number (other than 1) or combination of genders. The gender of a genderfluid person might change after a few minutes, or after hours, days, even months. Genderfluidity refers to gender ONLY; it does NOT refer to changes in presentation.
And what is presentation, aka gender presentation or gender expression? It’s what gender a person chooses to portray with their appearance. This can include choosing whether to wear male or female clothing, shoes and accessories… hair length and style… whether or not makeup is used… whether or not body shaping garments are worn, such as a binder to flatten the breasts, or padding to create curves... and whether or not there is facial hair, whether naturally grown or otherwise. If someone has a presentation that differs from their biological sex, they might be trans, or it could be cosplay, drag, cross-dressing, a costume, being gender non-conforming (GNC), as a sociopolitical statement (eg butch lesbians), or just for fun.
Presentation does NOT determine gender!
Some people are forced to wear whatever their culture dictates. Or whatever their family will accept. GNC people choose to not wear clothing that conforms to their gender. For some people, presentation is irrelevant, and they just wear whatever is easiest.
Because there are no elements of presentation that are specifically for any of the non-binary genders, non-binary people are typically left with some form of androgynous or GNC presentation. (@Princess-Spock: it's REALLY tricky to create a look that is neither male nor female, especially for those who, like me, don’t reshape their bodies.)
If a genderfluid person's gender changes when they aren't near their closet, their presentation might not match their gender, even if they’d prefer it to. Sometimes it's a matter of what they can afford; not everyone has the luxury of having multiple wardrobes. (@Princess-Spock: For those of us who are fortunate to have little or no dysphoria, we might skip customizing our presentation much of the time, just for simplicity.)
And just FYI:
Sexual orientation does NOT determine gender!
Specific to the fandom, there is no connection whatsoever between being asexual and being genderless/agender, or to not possessing genitals. Just because someone belongs in one of those categories does NOT mean or even suggest that they belong in the other categories. It is absolutely positively NOT correct to suggest that angels and demons are asexual simply because they don't have gender and/or genitals. (They might still be ace, of course!)
A few useful terms (these are not complete descriptions by any means):
• Asexual, sometimes abbreviated as ace, is a spectrum of sexual orientations in which a person feels little or no sexual attraction to anyone. Being asexual does NOT necessarily mean being aromantic. Also, being asexual does NOT mean not having sexual feelings, or not having and enjoying sex, although these things are true for those who are sex-averse.
• Aromantic is a spectrum of romantic attractions in which a person feels little or no romantic attraction to anyone. Being aromantic does NOT necessarily mean being asexual. And an aromantic person can still make loving connections, exchange affection like kissing or holding hands, and of course still have sex.
• Aroace refers to people who are both asexual and aromantic.
How does all this apply to the Good Omens universe? In the book, it says, “angels are sexless unless they really want to make an effort”; Neil has referred to this for the series as well. Canon isn't explicit, but most of us interpret this as, "they don’t have genitals unless they choose to." Lack of GENITALS is then often wrongly seen as lack of GENDER. Neil said, "Neither the angels nor the demons, as far as I’m concerned, are actually gendered as humans are." But, he uses human gender terms; Crowley is genderfluid, angels are non-binary (it seems like he means that they’re genderless, but that's NOT what non-binary means). Confusingly, in a 2018 post, he said:
"The angels and demons in Good Omens aren’t human, they aren’t male (nor are they female). Not that they couldn’t be male etc if they wanted to make that effort. As it says in Good Omens: ‘For those of angel stock or demon breed, size, and shape, and composition, are simply options’."
That sure looks like, YES, they CAN have gender!
More confusingly, Neil also says that his personal headcanon is NOT canon, canon is only what's in the book and the series... and none of this appears in either place. This makes the gender and thus pronoun issues a tad ambiguous. We agree 100% with Neil that people should embrace their headcanons and allow others to do the same, and so use whatever pronouns they want, and allow others to do the same. Here's how WE see Crowley and Aziraphale's genders and pronouns:
It is absolutely impossible, by definition, for a genderfluid person to be genderless ALL the time. Therefore, if Crowley is genderfluid, he MUST have gender at least part of the time! (And if he can have gender, so can all other angels and demons!)
When Mrs. Sandwich tells Crowley that he's a good lad, and he responds that he's neither, that's in line with what most genderfluid people would say; having a gender some days but not others is different from BEING that gender. Crowley has chosen a male body (male genitals, hairy chest), facial hair, generally masculine attire, and male pronouns, so it's reasonable to assume that his chosen gender is male most of the time.
We assume that he was female when he chose to wear female clothing (an abaya) in the crucifixion scene. He may also have been female during his stint as Nanny Ashtoreth, but that might have just been presentation.
During the scene where he's in heaven in S2, he has a non-binary presentation; the tracksuit is androgynous, and the accessories (headband, sparkly gold tie, fingernails, and toenails) are feminine. He might be experiencing a non-binary gender at this time.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
(@Princess-Spock: Genderfluidity is very complicated. Even when Crowley "looked" female, he might have been experiencing a variety of different genders; remember, neither genitals nor presentation determine gender! In fact, since Crowley had adopted a female appearance out of necessity, not because that was his true gender at that time, he might even never have actually BEEN female during the time he was "looking" female!)
What about Aziraphale? He has all the “male stuff” that Crowley does (facial and chest hair, deep voice, etc). He has an unwaveringly masculine presentation; his hair is ALWAYS short throughout history (even when Gabriel’s is long), and his sartorial choices are traditionally and formally male (pocket watch on a chain, French cuffs with cufflinks), with no hint of the modern androgyny of jeans and T-shirts… strong evidence that his chosen gender is male.
Neil always refers to Aziraphale and Crowley as he/him (he stated that Crowley was presenting female as Nanny Ashtoreth and at the crucifixion, but no pronoun is used either time). The book and the script book always refer to Aziraphale and Crowley as he/him. Aziraphale and Crowley always refer to each other as he/him. Michael and David have always referred to Aziraphale and Crowley as he/him. So, he/him is our personal choice.
What about the pronouns of other supernatural characters?
Beelzebub:
He/him in the book. She/her in the script book. For S1, Neil said, “I don’t think there were any. Probably Zzzzzzir.” They/them for S2 (“but they're always such a little ray of sunshine” in E3).
Dagon:
In the book, no pronouns are used, but all male titles; Lord, Master, Under-Duke. He/him in the script book. No pronouns used in the show or by Neil.
Muriel:
They/them canonically, but referred to by Quelin Sepulveda, the actress who plays Muriel, as she/they. It seems like the gender perception of the actor who embodies a character has to count for something; if Quelin was perceiving Muriel as partly female, that's an intrinsic part of who Muriel IS. We think we should honor that. (Neil has had plenty of opportunity to debate Quelin's usage, but never has.)
(Food for thought: If we accept this sort of "mixed" pronoun usage as valid in the Good Omens universe, it could apply to other angels or demons, not just to Muriel!)
Archangels played by actresses:
In the script book, when Aziraphale speaks to the 4 archangels, it says; “The room of angels in slick suits. There are four of them, male and female.” It doesn't specify WHO is female, though, and ALL the archangels have non-female pronouns elsewhere in the book, so...?
Uriel:
"He" in the script book, no pronouns otherwise.
Michael:
“He” in the script book. Neil has used "they."
Angels and demons played by male actors:
All of them are referred to with male pronouns, both within the series and by Neil. However:
Hastur:
Briefly had a female appearance in the scene where Aziraphale and Crowley are kidnapped, but no pronouns were used at the time. In the script book, the “lady tourist” is referred to as "she" when whacking Crowley… and then is referred to as "her" even AFTER transforming into Hastur with a wig.
Ligur:
In the book, Ligur was intriguingly referred to as “it” while he was dying, but immediately thereafter was referred to as "he." That paragraph appears almost word for word in the script book; it refers to him as "he" instead of "it."
Sandalphon:
Referred to in the script book as "it." (“Sandalphon grins, pleased with itself. Then it sniffs the air.”)
Metatron:
"He" in the book and season 2.
God:
Neil said: Jesus uses "Father". Aziraphale uses "She" pronouns for God and Crowley uses "They". I don't think the God in the Good Omens TV universe has a gender.
In the book, Aziraphale, Crowley and Metatron refer to God as He. In the script book, Aziraphale refers to God as She, and Crowley refers to God as They and She.
We think the bottom line is: These are FICTIONAL characters inhabiting a universe where there are few canonical rules for pronouns or gender for supernatural beings. This is a perfect vehicle for choice, which has so much importance to the story. You may start out on opposite sides, you may start out as a genderless being, you may start out as a sexless being, but you can choose something different for yourself. The importance of choice in Good Omens is one of the things that makes it great!
There’s a lot of fic and art that depicts the characters in different ways; everyone should feel comfortable portraying them the way they choose without the worry that someone is going to be upset with them. We’ve both seen a lot of comments to the tune of, “you’re not using the correct pronouns” or “that’s not the correct sexual orientation,” and that’s not good fandom etiquette. Being open-minded and kind to one another as we flesh out this universe for ourselves is just basic courtesy. Neil himself has said that in fandom, any interpretation is valid! The Good Omens fandom is largely a microcosm of the queer community; we need to practice acceptance amongst ourselves, so that we can stand together against those in the wider world who want to tear us down!
Anyone who wants to discuss personal gender issues can feel free to message @Princess-Spock; remember that if you ask anonymously, there's no way to reply to you!

I understand the intention behind this post and I don't disagree with it. I don't.
If you're writing a period piece or something with a certain dark tone, then yes, you absolutely want to keep to that, give your gruff sailor a mumbled line about not being like most other men, or your scattered workaholic scientist can say she never felt like she was missing out on anything by not having a partner while they save the world.
But do not limit the reach of fanfiction by expecting it to be held to the same standards.
Because we need both. Because the target audience for a lot of works that employ this are young, they're disconnected from community, and they're lost. They think they're broken or they don't fit or they are made wrong.
I, a millennial, didn't know about bisexuality until I read about it in fanfic somewhere around 2003 (I was 13). I didn't know any out gay or queer people growing up. It was still scandalous on tv, and my parents didn't have any problem with it, they just didn't talk about it. I can't imagine how isolating it would have felt if my parents prevented me from watching anything with gay characters or spoke negatively about them.
My first discovery of nonbinary identity was in a bandom fic I read in 2010 (I was 20, for those playing the home game). It was maybe two years after that that I began to talk with nonbinary/genderqueer/genderfluid people online. I knew a couple of binary trans people in college, and one in high school, but this was my first time meeting people who weren't a binary gender. In 2012! It took another two years for me, at this point a full-ass adult, to start describing myself that way.
All of this oversharing to say...my understanding of queer identity was not hand-held by anyone in my life, but boy I learned to accept these foreign ideas I saw in myself because I had a safe fictional environment to explore these concepts and terms.
I think it was 2014-2016 when fanfic spaces had a boom of "everyone is trans" AUs and headcanons, and they were often rose-tinted and a bit twee, but that's the point of them. I saw identities I had to look up, and when I asked in follow-up "okay, but what does a person who feels like that look/act like?" it was all crickets, except in fiction, and specifically fanfic.
"But the world is different now, not knowing is no excuse" NOPE. not with anti-lgbtqia legislation passing in the US, or in other hostile countries around the world (I'm from the US, my argument is US-centric based on my experience and knowledge, but by no means exclusionary of people in other countries), or even family situations or rural upbringing or any other circumstance that isolated young queer folk from other queer folk.
A popular live-service video game introduced a nonbinary character and I saw twitch chats full of people who were just confused and uneducated. Ignoring those who were hostile was easy, but the uninformed, especially the non-English-speakers and people who didn't come from Western cultures, were largely open to learning something they never had framework for. Made all the more frustrating in a game environment where the characters didn't make a habit of having these discussions on screen, but that's a different rant.
I don't know if OP intended this in reference to original media, or toward fic, but I saw a lot of established characters in the reblogs so I just want to address that. I'm a characterization first fic reader, so I get it. "Everyone is trans" fics aren't for me, but there's a space needed for them if someone needs to see Captain Kirk and Spock debating the application of terminology of human gender and sexuality in interplanetary cultural settings...now actually I kind of want that fic so I played myself.
Dragon Age Veilguard came under attack for daring to openly and forwardly use the term "nonbinary" in its fantasy world, as though something about the word is inherently incompatible with the fantasy genre? But the game was pretty clear in its goal to create a safe gaming space for marginalized folks when so often their experiences are erased, ignored, tokenized, or stereotyped. The narrative, therefore, had to be hostile to the unaccepting, educational for the ignorant, and validating to the vulnerable. Getting to play in a world where people are referred to as nonbinary (just like me) and where people use they/them pronouns (just like me) and where no one ridicules or attacks them specifically for this? It felt comfortable and safe and the world was ending in the game, but I felt a personal empowerment in my immersion.
More complex and nuanced discussions by characters about their queer identity add to the picture. It shouldn't be in every work because every author has their own angle and their own philosophy about it, but they have just as much a right to a seat at the table. You can have your fics where Tony Stark's sexuality is a smirk and a wink, and you can have your fics where he explains that he used to call himself bisexual but the world is bigger and weirder so he considers himself omnisexual now. And if you don't like that, scroll past it. The author didn't write it for you, but someone else needs to hear that.
Maybe this is just a personal vent that escaped containment, but I feel the need to remind some folks that some people need the LGBT center brochure version because they didn't get one in the mail. It's a tough time for everyone in this community, no need to make it tougher.
he would not fucking say that but it’s he would not fucking talk about his queer identity like he was reading out of a college campus lgbt center brochure

Fem!verse: ace!Mickirk+ Enterprise crew edition.
• Jim full name is James Tiberia Kirk. James because George said so before he died and Tiberia because people seriously have sense of humor. She hates when people calls her with her full name and loves Jim, because Jim fits her better than anything. The only person who can call her James is Leo;
• Leo goes for Leonora Horatia Mccoy, because every single Mccoy needs to have Horatio before the surname. It's the law. Everyone calls her Leo or Nora but in the middle of a shuttle ride Jim Kirk decided she was going to be Bones and that's that;
• Leo's the best dancer of all Georgia and she ends breaking everyone heart between the steps. She met Jocelyn on the dance floor and they are sixteen, marries at 20, becomes parents at 23, divorced by 26. They kiss one last time when they are 24 and half and then they fight, fight, fight, while Leo drowns herself into work and Jocelyn in Clay's bed;
• Jim was born in space but lives all her life in Iowa with Frank and Sam, util Sam leaves them when she's 11 and he's 16. Tarsus IV is just a year later;
• Leo is 6'5 ft tall where Jim is 6' (5'9 Jim, don't bullshit yoursel). Leo hates her hair longer than ten centimeter and loves all the kind of undercuts- she actually learned to cut them herself during med school because if she didn't have time to sleep she surely didn't have time to go to the hairdressers-, where Jim always have them long and longer, forgetting her hair tie in every single room of the Academy and then on the ship, on planets and one memorable time even in a volcano;
• when they met Bones was 26, recently divorced and it was almost six month since the last time she saw her baby girl, while Jim was 22 and just met the floor of a bar;
• Leo loves Joanna. She loves her little girl and would do anything for her. But she didn't really want her at the beginning, she did it mostly because Jocelyn wanted to a baby and her mom always seemed sad when she tought about her not having a children;
• Leo comes out in the middle of a study session because a guy from her xenomed course invited her for dinner and dessert and honest to God with people are always thinking about sex. Jim looks at her for a long moment before asking for something more (first year);
• Jim comes out while she is drunk because how could she not. She says, holding her hand out, as if she was counting to not forget how many words she has to pronounce: I'm non binary, biromantic and asexual. What's your prognosis doctor? Leo orders another round of drinks and sleeps in Jim bed, holding her tight against her chest that night. The next morning she asks Jim what pronouns prefers. (she/they; secone year);
• they start dating almost at the end of their third year, after the most intense friendship both of them ever had. It's not like one of them says to the other we're together, they just kiss once before class and then the same night before going to bed and every other day from that moment on. Theoretically they have two different dorm with different roommates but they sleep in the same single bed for months. Sometimes in Leo's dormitory, sometime in Jim's;
• Leo finishes her (second) PhD during the second years and Jim is awestruck with how clever her best friend is and she gets a thank you at the end of the thesis because I wouldn't even got very far without you. It's almost a love confession;
[• Pike always looks out for them and a part of him looks at Jim and see George, almost twenty years before. He rembers how they used to spend hours in the simulator because George wanted to teach him how to fly every single ship he could find and Christopher used to follow him around. He wasn't in love with him but he could be easily been the case if it wasn't for Winona. (bi!Christopher Pike; one-side!Chris/George (was it really one-side?); George/Winona; dadmiral)];
• they end up on the Enterprise because of Nero and now she is Captain James Tiberia Kirk and her girlfriend is the CMO of a boat she hates half of the time, but she couldn't be happy anywhere else;
• between Leo and Spock is not love at the first sight and not even at the second, or a thousand, sight. It's not love at all but their frenemies relationship is the most awsome thing in her life after Joanna&Jim. Spock needs a hand but he doesn't know how to ask for it and then Geoffrey M'Benga arrives with all their knowledge on Vulcans and stuff just falls in the right place. He tells her he's trans and wants to transition but Vulcan is still not the most open place about it so he would like to be helped. Leo can tell him no;
[• Geoffrey M'Benga is 32 years old, non-binary and use they/them as pronouns. Everyone calls them GF. People really freaks out when they have to meet them because they never know who are going to meet. With him it comes Christine Chapel, the queen of lesbians and with her all the best of Starfleet Medical are together];
• Spock and Nyota become a couple when Jim/Leo are fighting and then a trouple when Gaila gets a post on the Enterprise. Leo is still angry and honestly she could care less of everyone and their lives (Nyota is bi, Gaila aromantic, Spock kisses them with his fingers and with his mouth and it's one of the best thing of the day);
• they are fighting because Jim is reackless and Leo would like to not see her in the infermery every other week and, on the last planet they visit, the prime minister flirted with her and Jim almost let herself be kissed. She doesn't know with whom begin more pissed, herself for believing they could last or herself, again, for believing they could fail so easly;
• they both miss Chehkov's freak out on the bridge because he looks at Hikaru and oh yeah, but then he looks at Leo and he got the crush for her but then there's the alien with three genders and the one after that that as none. They all make Chehkov hot hot hot. And he is 18 and wants answers and to try everything at least once. Okay, maybe it's better if he doesn't say a word about the crush he has for Dr. McCoy but for the rest;
• it takes two weeks to find the way to solve this particular fight because talking is so difficult when you never had to.
Probably will be more.

so a few days i decided to rp jim as trans masc non-binary because we love that here. promised a few headcanons so i’m here to provide in a few small points.
jim likely fully transitions at some point. it’s the 23 century so access to medical care and the tools needed is far easier than it would be in our time. meaning trans people are able to pass far easier and are more able to feel comfortable in their bodies with less dysphoria. i mean this is supposed to be our perfect future so let me live.
very few people know jim was afab. they’re not likely to volunteer that information unless medically necessary - meaning bones absolutely knows. spock may also know as well as jim trusts spock with their life and considers spock his literal soulmate and brother according to the tos movies. spock knowing gets a pass from me and would not be considered godmoding.
all of my headcanons apply to my aos kirk as well naturally and will apply to snw.

Screw Spirk- my Star Trek TOS Queer Representation is the genderless blob and its symbiotic human boyfriend who is also the discoverer of warp drive
Edit: later in the episode they talk to the blob and it has a stereotypical female voice, and Spock, Kirk, and Bones decides it’s female- but I’m pretty sure that bitch is trans or bc it’s an alien it doesn’t conform to human ideas of gender
Edit pt 2: the boyfriend asked Kirk why they made it so the blob had a female voice (bc they had to edit the translator so they could understand the blob), and Kirk says “we didn’t” “its 100% female, gender is a constant regardless of aliens and space”.
Kirk is wrong! The boyfriend was ready to be in a queer relationship, and that blob does not conform to human gender stereotypes!
Edit pt 3: this shit is so fucked- they’re saying the blob is a woman bc it has a stereotypically female voice and it later combined with a woman in the landing party- THAT BITCH IS QUEER LEAVE ME ALONE
Okay new idea: the blob (later in the episode) is a female presenting non-binary person

hi!! (still working on shyness so sorry for being on anon, i promise i’m following tho)
i was wondering if i could request relationship headcanons (preferably romantic, but platonic/familial is cool too!) w/ star trek, aos or snw?? i’ve never done this before so if you need more info or something you can ask ‘pandora anon’ sjsbdjfjfn
uhh matchup info about me! i’m non-binary and trans neutral, so i prefer ungendered or masc terms like person guy king liege etc. relatively new adult in university, planning on getting a major and a minor. i’m a major introvert with adhd so making friends is hard (rip to everyone but like 2 people i’ve talked to) but once i’m comfortable with someone i basically turn into an extrovert but Only For Them, so lots of talking and a Need to be Physically Close (like a cat). i looove animals, i love my cats and reptiles especially <3 and if it’s of any importance, i’ve always imagined myself in the science division with a focus on xenobiology/general astronomy stuff!!
Tumblr media
That is definitely a perk of being bi, I agree! lol, thanks for sending in the second ask~ I hope you like them :)
Ships are under the cut!
Star Trek AOS:
I ship you with Hikaru Sulu!
I think Sulu is super understanding, not very extroverted himself, so I think the two of you would bond easily and find each others company soothing and comforting.
Runner Up: Uhura
Headcanons:
You met at the academy, and, he noticed you were pretty introverted, but he was curious about you. So he sat beside you, and slowly talked to you, wasn't too pushy, and eventually you opened up enough to befriend him,
The two of you became fast friends after this, and spent a lot of time hanging out.
You would attend his fencing matches and cheer him on (silently) but he always knew you were there. He would often look over at you and you'd give him a thumbs up and he would immediately get a boost of confidence.
He loved to hear about your studies in xenobiology, and learned a lot from you.
Sulu enjoys Astronomy as well so the two of you would talk about it a lot, often going to the observatory and looking at the stars for hours.
It was during one of these observatory visits that he finally confessed how he felt about you. This mans was head over heels for you honestly.
He was SO relieved when you admitted you felt the same. This was the beginning of your very loving and life-long relationship.
You two luckily were both assigned to the Enterprise, so you got to spend that part of your life together as well.
Tumblr media
-----------------------
Star Trek SNW:
I ship you with Erica
Erica is my fave, so I'm a bit biased lol. But I think she'd be super comfortable to be around, and has a tendency of making your more extroverted side come out. She just has this aura that makes people more fun and bubbly.
Runner Up: Spock
Headcanons:
Though Erica is pretty extroverted, she never pushes you to do more than you are comfortable with.
She is very in tune to how feel, so if you go to a party or event, she is happy you came with her, but she makes sure to keep an eye on you. She can tell when you start to get uncomfortable or overwhelmed and will be ready to leave when you feel like this.
Erica loves animals as well, so she is totally okay with having pets when you live together. You might end up with too many, but whatever lol
She likes to brag about her intelligent partner, and how good you are at your job - the best in your field to be exact.
You became fast friends with all of Erica's friends - like she knew you would. And they always enjoy your company.
Erica is alright with touch/cuddling, so as soon as you two are back in your quarters, it is cuddle time. She loves that you are like a cat in this area, and enjoys your closeness as much as you do.
She likes PDA but knows it probably makes you a bit uncomfortable (if it doesn't then she does not shy away from it), she she will just stand close to you, hands brushing, occasional hand on the back, to let you know she's there.

Accessible Tech and Disabled People in the Future - Dr. Ra’ym W’rtoh Ns’ia
Access note: all pictures have Alt text. Please let me know if anything is not working as it should.
I was so excited to see Aurellio (a disabled character using a super sleek hover chair) introduced during the season 3 finale of Star Trek Discovery. I was even more glad to learn that the character of Aurellio was developed to match the mobility needs of the actor who plays him, Kenneth Mitchel. It would be amazing to see even more disability representation in the Trek verse.
I’ve written the concept for another physically disabled character, Dr. Ns’ia. Many of the details for this character are based on my own experiences as a multi-racial Chinese-Jewish, disabled and queer/non-binary person. Spoiler alert: Dr. Ns’ia and I have the same disability, Arthrogryposis. More spoiler alert: they’re a xenopsychologist and I am completing my PhD in human clinical psychology (clinical focus on working with adolescents, research focus on internalized stigma among disabled people). I know, I know, I basically turned myself into a Star Trek character, but that’s what you do during a global pandemic, right?
I didn’t plan for every small detail of this character and their backstory to fit seamlessly into the particular cannon of any single current Trek show (But if Star Trek does want to bring Dr. Ns’ia to life that’d be rad). I did, however, write this with the intention of pointing out how easy (and, to quote Spock, “logical”) it would be to include more disabled folks in Star Trek given the available technology, and the existing culture of inclusion. Different alien species working side-by-side in the same ships, and Starfleet easily making adjustments -Geordi’s visor - or building in access - universal translators, voice controls, text to speech and speech to text software all over the place -  for everyone to do their jobs.  They are already ideally set up for disability inclusion!
Keep an eye out for some updates to the Dr. Ns’ia narrative. A few grumpy Reddit reviews gave me ideas for improving consistency issues. Edits to this will come just as soon as I finish up the latest round of edits on my dissertation. Also, If anybody has a hook up for disability culture consultants to Star Trek please do let me know! Like, really...for real...I’m not even kidding.
Anywhoo...here’s Dr. Ns’ia:
Tumblr media
Dr. Ra’ym W’rtoh Ns’ia (they/them) is a physically disabled Xahean xenopsychologist. Research interests include best practices for treating X-Borg as well as Trill symbiont cognition. They primarily work on a Borg cube that was separated from the collective and are the clinical director of X-B Rehabilitation and Repatriation. They also do field studies with non-joined symbionts on Trill, and coordinate a summer mentoring program for trans/non-binary kiddos with and without disabilities.
When they were studying psychology at Starfleet Academy they minored in Klingon language and culture. They embody the ubiquitous mild mannered therapist archetype, but are known to occasionally burst out yelling in Klingon...especially when they lose track of research data. They’ve developed some groundbreaking treatments using Klingon Scream Therapy.
Tumblr media
Medical treatment for the sake of normativity alone is definitely not for Dr. Ns’ia. Being disabled is as much a part of their identity as is being non-binary or being Xahean. In comparison to other Xaheans they’re quite small in stature, and have joint contractures that impact mobility in their arms and legs (their disability is similar to the human condition, Arthrogryposis). They use a variety of tech to navigate everyday life including a hover chair made from programmable matter, and a set of 2 inch diameter hover spheres (affectionately named “Grabbers”) that they control with a neural augment. The chair can customize its shape and seating position to perfectly match the needs its user, and has been retrofitted with a personal force field that not only protects against wayward Borg but also enables short EVA trips. The controls on the chair can link into the controls on all standard Starfleet vessels. With the right security codes, any ship or shuttle is accessible for Dr. Ns’ia to fly. The Grabbers are equipped with small scale tractor beams, and are useful for picking up day-to-day items ranging from a coffee cup to a PADD to a bat’leth. The Grabbers are incredibly strong and can move heavy objects.  Dr. Ns’ia regularly uses them to transfer in and out of their chair or bed or anywhere else they need to move. Like the chair, the Grabbers are formed from programmable matter, and reabsorb into the frame of the hover chair when not being used.
Dr. Ns’ia has a partner who still lives on Earth. Long distance relationships are hard, so they and their partner are planning to move together to a colony that is within shuttle distance of the Borg cube.
