Spock would have been a pre-Reform poet.
no essay. but! I thought that would be interesting so I wrote a fic with the premise, having some worldbuilding fun with pre-Reform (or rather, non-Reform) Vulcan poetry, poetry scene, rituals and Stuff. Believe it or not, it's not all just elaborate foreplay.
Yes, Fuck the Government
Rating: Explicit
Vulcan, a dangerous civilization of enormous military power, has entered tentative negotiations with Starfleet. Vulcans, however, are passionate, violent and unpredictable and, though the current autocrats are still strong, there is unrest brewing in the capital. When the Starfleet delegation lands, Captain Pike urges their subordinates to do a little reconnaissance in their spare time. Lieutenant Kirk stumbles upon Vulcan poetry that has been known to start and end wars; and then, after some trial and error, upon a poet. * It is essentially a… cautiously M-rated poetry reading and then some gratuitous sex. Also Jim gets an autograph.
ao3 link again 🥰 enjoy!

There are sadly only three episodes left of 9-1-1: Lone Star, which returns on Monday, January 20, 2025 (the finale is set for February 3).
And sure, there’s a massive emergency—an asteroid heading for Austin—but there’s also quite a bit left to wrap up about the characters as well. In addition to whether or not Owen (Rob Lowe) might take that job offer and what’s next for Judd (Jim Parrack) with his drinking, there’s the matter of T.K. (Ronen Rubinstein) and Carlos (Rafael Silva) adopting T.K.’s half-brother Jonah as well as what’s ahead for the rest of the first responders. TV Insider turned to co-showrunner Rashad Raisani for the scoop.
How much are we going to see T.K. and Carlos trying to balance being parents and balancing work? They have family, but at the same time, they are the primary caretakers now of this kid.
Rashad Raisani: You’re putting your finger right on the end of the series is all I’ll tell you about that. That becomes a major issue, let’s put it that way.
Do they have time for themselves as a couple?
They will, I’ll put it that way, but I won’t tell you how.
As much as I love seeing Nancy (Brianna Baker) as captain and she’s already doing great, will we see Tommy (Gina Torres) back at the 126 before the show ends?
I can’t answer that. It would be too big. I can’t answer it. Let’s just say Gina Torres is a Ferrari. You don’t leave a Ferrari in the garage forever.
But will we see her physically at the 126? She could just be visiting.
[Laughs] If I answered it. I would be spoiling so much.
What else can you tease about the final three episodes for the characters and their relationships?
The thing that I can say is that everyone in the last two episodes gets pushed to their extreme limit—and some past it, to be honest. We have some of our most insane apocalyptic emergencies in 11 and 12. It’s basically a combination of The Last of Us and Chernobyl. It mirrors where all of the characters are, and most of them are in an apocalyptic space for one reason or another.
Mateo [Julian Works] is going to have an existential crisis going back to his status as a DACA, as a dreamer. T.K. and Carlos, they are not done with—yeah, they want to adopt Jonah, but it’s not that easy, and there’s going to be a major fundamental hurdle for them that they’re going to have to make a significant life decision to decide how they want to deal with it. Tommy is at the end of her life. Owen will be at the end of his life. Judd will have a new future that I think will both be very shocking but also feel hopefully very appropriate that will change the game of where he goes. Marjan is going to have a massive episode in Episode 10, which I think people will get a lot of joy from—I know I did, and I think it’s her best episode of the series. I think everybody’s going to have some big game-changing moments in the final three episodes.
What about for Paul (Brian Michael Smith)?
There’s a great—I have to say Brian pitched me an idea. He said there was this moment in the pilot where Owen tells Paul basically, there’s somewhere out there in Austin as a kid like you that doesn’t think they belong. And I want you here for when we run across that kid, you know what I mean? Whether it be non-binary, trans, gay, whatever. And Brian said, we said that in the pilot, but wouldn’t it be great if we did a story that showed that? And I thought, well, that is a great idea. And so the last two episodes we’re going to do that and we’re going to introduce a new major character, I should say, who Paul will be their kind of role model.
Are there any significant steps for any of the relationships in these last episodes beyond the adoption for Tarlos?
There may be new babies. I won’t tell you who. There may be deaths. I won’t tell you who. So there will be, there sure will be.
9-1-1: Lone Star, Returns, Monday, January 20, 2025, 8/7c, Fox

On social media the USA population are asking anyone from outside countries to properly document what is happening to them right now as they can't or are not able to.
As of the 20th of January 2025 up to the 24th January 2025 the following has happened:
Trump has signed several executive orders including:
Ruling that the United states will only recognise two genders, woman and man, and ones gender is determined by the sex they were conceived as. (his words not mine. By the way, this makes everyone effectively female) despite his stupidity, we know what he means, if one is born female, they are a woman. This effectively erases non-binary folk and forcibly de-transitions trans folk. This order claims to be defending woman from harmful gender ideology. The misogyny and outright bigotry within this order is genuinely terrifying and frustrating.
Fact sheet: Trump protects civil rights and merit-based opportunities by ending illegal DEI (diversity, equity, inclusion)
The death penalty. Trump is pushing for capital punishment to be used as often as possible for a certain list of crimes. Murder being one of them. Abortion and miscarriage has been described as murder. Woman are going to be imprisoned and slaughtered because they had a miscarriage or an abortion. This would also put those born outside of the US at greater risk of murder as the laws will be stricter towards them. Reading through the official documents, if a foreigner commits a federal crime (from as little as speeding 50miles over the limit to committing murder) they will be sentanced to death.
An alarming amount of executive orders are related to foreigners and foreign affairs such as:
Guardenteeing the states protection against invasion.
Protecting the United states from foreign terrorists and other national security and public safety threats.
Fact sheet: Trump protects the United states and American citizens by closing the borders to illegals via proclamation.
Trump has also stated in an executive order that there will be armed forces at the borders to prevent "aliens" from entering the country.
Source: WhiteHouse.com. (the constitution was replaced by Trumps executive orders and the White House Legislative Branch can not be found on the official website as it has been taken down.

Books are continuing to be banned and religion is re-entering the schools, indoctrinating the children.
They want to take womens right to vote. They are starting with pregnant women and women on maturity leave. If they can't keep you pregnant (if you get an abortion) you would have your right to vote stripped from you as abortion is now classified as murder which is a felony. Felons can't vote.
Jim crow laws will be reinstated. The native children will be taken. You are the people, you don't work for the government, they work for you. Get the gelatine, take back your power as the people.
When Hitler first got control, he told the jews to leave germany. When Trump got control, he told the immigrants to leave the US.
When Hitler got control, he came for the Queers first. Trump went for the queers.
When Hitler got control, he came for the disabled. Trump went for the women.
There were people who came before the jews. There are going to be people who come before those of colour. Trump is a racist, a sexist and a rapist. There will be people who come before you. Stand up for them so they will stand for you, lest you stand alone.
"When they came for the Queers, i didn't say anything because i was not Queer. When they came for the jews, i didn't say anything because i was not a jew. When they came for the women, i didnt say anything because i was not a woman. When they came for the disabled, i didnt say anything because i am not disabled. But then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me."
There is an Australian song about inclusively, and how when we are together we are stronger.
"We are one, but we are many. And from all acorss the lands we come, to share our dreams, and sing with one voice. I am, you are, we are Australian." Honestly, the US need this song right now.

seeing some of the incomprehensibly ridiculous takes that people who argue with you have had about "theyfab" and "tme" and the like has made me realise something i didn't before
the reason that they're claiming that trans men trying to come up with terms that describe their experiences and the ways in which the intersection of transphobia and sexism they experience affect them implies they think that trans women have privilege over trans men
is because have genuinely convinced themselves that the existance of "a term that describes oppression targetting a specific group" implies the existance of "privilege that everyone not in that group uniformly has"
they legitimately are treating "transmisogyny" as its own special axis of oppression distinct from others which everyone not targetted by it is privileged by the existance of, that all "tmes" hold privilege on that axis specifically, independent of other experiences relating to sexism and transphobia, and i am begging them to learn literally the first thing about intersectionality because it's clear that they think it means you can fuse words describing oppression together to make words describing STRONGER oppression like it's DBZ or something
not to mention that claiming "theyfab" is a "punching up" term like "breeder" or "cracker" is unhinged. even if you take that argument at face value it's fucking bonkers, at least those terms have the argument of "they describe a privileged class in relation to a form of oppression" (leaving aside that these kinds of terms can have issues of their own, like how "breeders" can easily be targetted at mspec people), but "theyfab" is specifically describing a specific subgroup of trans/nonbinary/genderqueer people. EVEN IF you accept that "tme privilege" exists, "theyfab" is not talking about "tme people", it is talking about afab people who use "they" pronouns, and mocking them in the exact same kind of way that transphobes mock trans people. like... gj on coming up with a socially progressive justification to be transphobic! im real impressed by "apache attack helicopter woke edition" here.
what you haven't considered is that some non-binary people AFAB got to go to a bad music festival which is basically the exact same as slavery and Jim Crow
(not that "it was invented in response to non-binary people AFAB who attended Michfest" is even true to begin with)

Hi! Sorry if this is too specific, but seconding the novel question except what I'm looking for is:
1. Bones! Preferably NOT a straight Bones, at that, though any is good.
2. Uhura my beloved *heart eyes* Literally anything with her as protagonist.
3. Spock and his relationship with Vulcan. Also any trans, non-binary or gender non-conforming Spock.
4. Jim being KIND and NOT A DICK. Jim being a total nerd and a teacher's pet and a total softie because I love him he's my sunshine. But also, Jim and Tarsus. Getting "over" Tarsus, his relationship with the other survivors, struggling with food on his day to day life, and having a beautiful support network that has his back.
I already have Doctor's Order on my to-read list, and I absolutely get it if all of this is too specific, but. yeah.
Anyways thank you for running this blog!
1. the only books i can think of are doctor’s orders and the romulan way. i’ll be honest, i’m not a big spones shipper and i’m really not up to snuff on tos books where he may be not-so-straight. i’m sorry!
2. uhura’s song you’d probably like:

3. these books delve into vulcan lore and spock’s upbringing as a vulcan:

i’m not really sure on any trans, non-binary, or gender non-conforming spock books. now mind you, i may have read tos books where he was what you’re looking for but i cannot remember. maybe someone could offer some recs in the comments if they know of some?
4. these books offer a more in-depth experience of what happened on tarsus:

i have not read collision course but i remember looking up tos books where jim’s experience on tarsus was expanded upon a bit more and found collision course
also: here’s the covers of doctor’s orders and the romulan way which are the only two mccoy-centric books i can recall:

kirk and spock are my favorite characters so i will admit i gravitate more towards books where they are the main focus

I cannot express the amount of home that this show has given me.
As a queer, transmasc person, I have never felt very comfortable with labels. I thought I was lesbian, then non-binary and bisexual, and then just a gay trans guy. Although I'm fairly sure I'm only attracted to masculine aligned people and that I am masculine aligned myself, I only felt the need for those labels because it's just so much easier to be binary. To have solid answers to who you are, to fit nicely into one category, to be easy to explain. But I have never been a polar or binary person in any sense, I have always been fluid. From my gender identity to expression, my ADHD fixation cycle of constantly moving on to new things, to my tendency to mirror people and morph a bit into different situations.
But nothing about our world just lets you live free and fluid like that. This is not conducive with our society of cishet being the default, and anything else needing to be clearly stated. Because you can't just be different and go unexplained, you have to justify your very existence. It is exhausting to live as a fluid person in many aspects, and constantly having to pinpoint myself on arbitrary scales that were set up by other people, to help them understand. I don't owe anyone coordinates to the exact degree of my transness. You don't owe anyone an explanation.
Our flag means death is such a beautiful depiction of a way of being that just lets people be. At almost no point is straight the expectation. The words queer and gay don't come up a single time throughout the show (correct me on that if I'm wrong), because it's just not relevant. The point of the show is that they're in love, and the fact that they're both men has almost no bearing on the situation whatsoever. Because it doesn't change anything. Jim is never acknowledged as trans, there isn't a coming out, Jim is just Jim, and it's not questioned. Olu, Zheng, Jim, and Archie's relationship is never clarified. Because we don't need to know if they're two couples or one quadruple, it just. Doesn't. Matter.
This stupid fucking beautiful show let's these wonderful characters be who they are, no presets to their selfness. To hell with historical accuracy, to hell with realism. Because this pocket of celebration of self, of queer joy, of love, it isn't about that. It's not about the details, or the timeline, or the exactness. It just is. It's fluid and free and fucking beautiful. And it's a home for people like me.
"it's about belonging to something"

At midnight on Saturday, more than 20 anti-LGBTQ+ bills died in West Virginia after the legislature adjourned sine die. Bills that did not pass included the misleadingly named "Women’s Bill of Rights," which would have ended legal recognition for transgender people in the state, as well as a bill that would have prohibited gender-affirming care for all transgender youth. West Virginia is the second state in a week hinting that anti-transgender legislative attacks are encountering resistance. Last week, Florida's legislature also adjourned, effectively killing dozens of anti-transgender bills.
One bill that failed to pass as the West Virginia legislature adjourned was House Bill 5243, also known as the misleadingly-named "Women’s Bill of Rights" by its proponents. The bill primarily aimed to exclude transgender individuals from all legal gender protections in the state. Riley Gaines, who heavily promoted the bill, joined Governor Jim Justice at a press conference where it was announced as a major policy priority. The proposed legislation would have led to bathroom restrictions, prohibitions on driver's license and ID changes, and the elimination of legal recognition for transgender people's gender identities. Despite frantic, last-minute efforts by some Republicans to pass it, Democratic lawmakers countered by proposing dozens of amendments for debate. As a result, Republicans placed it at the bottom of the calendar.
“HB 5243 offered no real tangible protections for cisgender women, all while punching down on another marginalized community, and sought to erase protections for transgender West Virginians,” says Ash Orr, a trans organizer in West Virginia, “Essentially, it amounted to yet another culture war bill designed to divert attention from genuine issues affecting all residents of West Virginia.”
Another bill that did not pass in West Virginia was House Bill 5297, which sought to entirely prohibit gender-affirming care for all transgender youth. The state had previously enacted a ban on gender-affirming care, but it included an exception for transgender youth experiencing "severe dysphoria." HB 5297 aimed to eliminate that exception. More than 400 health care providers signed a letter opposing the bill, describing gender-affirming care as lifesaving and urging the legislature to reject it. The bill failed to pass before the legislature adjourned, meaning that at least some transgender youth in the state will continue to be able to receive care, making it one of the few red states where this is still the case.
The state is the latest in a series of developments suggesting that the anti-transgender panic gripping the GOP may be diminishing in the lead-up to the 2024 elections. Florida also recently adjourned without passing numerous anti-transgender and anti-LGBTQ+ bills. Recent elections have raised questions about the effectiveness of anti-transgender policies in driving voter turnout. In 2023, more than 70% of Moms for Liberty candidates were defeated. The Virginia legislature shifted to Democratic control, despite Governor Youngkin's efforts to campaign for Republicans by emphasizing anti-transgender politics as a policy priority. Governor Andy Beshear was reelected in Kentucky despite substantial ad expenditures attacking him for vetoing anti-transgender legislation.
When asked about the failure of these to pass, Orr stated, “The truth is, transgender people of all ages are living happy, complete, and beautiful lives - this contradicts the false narrative created around our community by anti-transgender politicians.”
The only bill that did pass in the state was a bill that would stop non-binary gender markers on birth certificates, though it is unclear what effect the legislation would have given that the state did not have a history of issuing such birth certificates.
Although these bills are failing to pass in states that have historically targeted transgender individuals, it remains unclear whether their failure signifies a genuine shift away from targeting LGBTQ+ people or merely a pause in anticipation of the 2024 election outcomes. The threat remains significant in many areas, with a few extreme bills being enacted this year, including a gender-affirming care ban in Wyoming and an adult bathroom ban in Utah. Additionally, some new states have witnessed the successful advancement of anti-trans legislation, such as a "Parents Rights in Education" bill in Washington, which could lead to forced outings, and a bill in New Hampshire that permits sports and bathroom bans. The national budget debate also includes anti-trans provisions that are still under negotiation.
Nevertheless, activists in states that have experienced the most severe attacks see reasons for celebration and hope. The failure of dozens of bills targeting the LGBTQ+ community means that residents in these states will have another year to prepare and strategize. If the 2024 elections yield unfavorable results for Republicans who have advocated anti-transgender legislation, similar to the outcomes in 2022 and 2023, it could further argue against the political viability of making these bills a policy priority. Most importantly, transgender individuals in these states are granted the valuable gift of time to catch their breath following the relentless barrage of legislative efforts that have dominated political discourse over the past five years.

so regarding the environment and fan culture that brought about pccp.
GB girlies and izzy antis twisted ofmd into the bastion of radically progressive queer media, and made GB into beacon of all good queer rep, when most of it was just Not That Deep (or even well-written, if we're looking at s2). and in order to pat themselves on the back for being upstanding queer citizens and consumers of the morally upright media, they obviously have to point blame to a villain - systemic homophobia. the obvious villain here is obviously the british empire, but because the empire is not a material villain they project it onto the next closest thing; a shouty angry secondary antagonist, and turn him into the embodiment of all and every form of real-world queer oppression.
but wait, that's not enough! that's not politically savvy enough! they need to add another dimension of racialised violence in Ed and Izzy's dynamic to show JUST how politically progressive they are.
which, ironically, is an interpretation that's actually more racist. ofmd deliberately averted overt homophobia directed at its protagonists because they didn't want that to be a trigger for its audience, and the fans loved praising it for being SO SAFE and SO COMFORTING and SO COZY. unfortunately, izzy antis needed izzy to be the axis of all oppression that Ed suffers, so the resulting OFMD that existed in the heads of Izzy antis is a show where white queers get an escapist love story, but characters of colour has to suffer years of systemic racism. and as a fan of colour......it's the kind of performance of race awareness that can only come from a fandom of white queers overcompensating for their white guilt. if we're being honest.
a white guy racefaking to give his arguments more weight? a fandom so up its own arse and high on its fumes of moral superiority is just perfect environment for that kind of jobless behaviour tbh.
(had this sitting in the drafts for a while and now i've finally returned to it)
oh anon i think you've hit the head on a lot of issues here.
to preface: i think OFMD is a perfectly fine show. it's fun. it's well acted. the set design and costuming was great. the first season obviously remains my favourite because of how well everything sort of fits together.
season 2, well, it has it's moments, but knowing what we know of production, i think it was nerfed quite a bit and what we got was a bit of a mess and all over the place in terms of pacing and storytelling. a lot of characters were ill developed because they didn't have the time they needed to continue their character arcs. i was honestly so confused by Archie's introduction because so much time had been skipped and suddenly Jim is in a new relationship?? so the relationship they had with Oluwande just fizzled out. and obviously we never would have gotten that poly ship between Jim, Archie, Olu, and Zheng, so that remains just a mess of a story.
and obviously this isn't even touching upon the elephant in the room Ed/Izzy/Stede
characters i wouldn't even want to touch with a ten foot poll because they have been so torn apart by fandom speculation that they now exist as caricatures of themselves if we're being honest
what i find frustrating about how izzy is treated within this fandom, is that people pour their frustrations onto him and refuse to look in the mirror.
for example: some people critique trans Izzy headcanons. and it usually boils down to 'if you want GOOD trans representation, Jim is right there' as if that isn't condescending as hell. here's the thing: Jim as non-binary representation gets sidelined by the main story in s2. that's just the reality. whatever made them interesting in s1, got completely skipped over in s2. we weren't seeing Jim on screen in s2. we were seeing Vico. and if people can make critiques like that of trans Izzy headcanons, would it be fair of me to say the same about trans Ed headcanons? gnc Stede headcanons? if you want gnc representation, Jim is literally right there
and what it comes down to is, don't yuck anyone's yum???
and obviously this fandom has a racism problem. and it's hilarious to see some people saying 'i didn't realize it was so bad' when it's been obvious from the start that if you treat liking a character as a litmus test for how good you are as a person, you're going to run into racism by implying that IF YOU LIKE IZZY AS A CHARACTER THEN YOU ARE EITHER 1) RACIST OR 2) YOU HAVE INTERNALIZED RACISM AS A FAN OF COLOUR IN THIS FANDOM
and i doubt this fandom will learn from this

THAT'S ALL FOR NOW...IT TOOK ME ALMOST 2 HOURS. THANKS FOR READIN(still editing)
THANKS FOR SUPPORT
!!SOON COMING MORE STUFF(WILL COME/SHOW UP IN LATER STUFF OR WILL BE WRITTEN HERE)!!⬇️
1.Okay for sure here will be a lot of happy wallmark posts,so if here any wallmark happiness needers, enjoy!they are switches and wallter is the malewife...wallter really likes cooking and taking care of others
Mark tries to be as helpful as he can but mark is a clumsy type of guy but very nice, tho sometimes stubborn so is wallter!enjoy-they did have a divorce before but they decided to give it another try and then remarried so yeah, they are a happy married gay couple!!!.
2.Yes the au have a story, kind of a lore and all but I just want to say that in this au most of things are happy(maybe.) and here are not a lot problems(no promises)...except with Mr and unpleasant still is unpleasant,I will write the story one day eventually when I will get time-each cast member of wter have their own backstories and secrets.
3.|pest doesn't really like infected In fact, poob is dating infected and pest but pest and infected are not dating cuz they quite hate each other but after all everything is fine in their relationships, they all agreed on this and are fine with it|,|spive,it just split x bive, bive is still very paranoid but with split she calms down a bit and split tries to help her out with stuff and they love each other very much|,|wallmark,as I said they had a divorce but they remarried, for Lampert and themselves and now they are happy with each other, they still prefer their building materials but they realized it's not such a big of a deal so they ignore what they prefer here|
4. Mark and Jim are siblings, glevil is their cousin|Mark and Jim are very close to each other and would die for one another,Jim really helped mark after divorce and with the remarry plan which worked out|
5.Ocs are still welcomed!Just tell me information about them and if I have rights to add them to the au,I will let on your own answer questions for your oc since I don't want to be rude here and say something incorrect
6.some npcs Live together and here I will give some
Wallter+Mark+jimmy
Poob+pest
Infected+unpleasant+Lampert(tho lampert spends most of his time in rokea)
split+bive
Mach+pilby
Mike+glevil
Mr+enphoso
Crem+Emerson+gregoriah
Jeremy+clover+döug
7.not everything is here from canon and it's more fanon...I try to keep each npcs personalities but also a bit changes,I made this au to a bit make it up to me but I also made this like that to keep important details and not change too much!
8(out of info) you can use my designs for anything you want, ship art and etc but I would be grateful if you tag me when u do
9.yes,wallter and folly are rather close to each other and sometimes consider each other literally bff's,folly isn't as negative and life-threatening to wallter compared to others, wallter is half oblivious to that folly have threaten a lot people and even hurted them...but wallter still helps folly to control herself anyhow.

OH MY GODS I READ THROUGH EVERYTHING AND I'M OBSESSED
Is there an official list of sexual orientations/gender identities for the characters?
not currently!
off the top of my head weve got
Scott - cis gay
joey - cis bi
Jim - trans bi
Ariana Griande - trans!
worm - non binary
auralius (hels) - trans
nox (ex) - transmasc
xornoth - transmasc
im sure more characters are queer but those are off the top of my head
if you go to the fan doccument linked just before the story section in my masterlist, there will probably be far more details there as Plart is a godsend and writes down the lore I give to characters cus I forget

Dear OFMD,
I wasn’t sure who to address this to, at first. There are so many options, so many people instrumental in the creation of this show that means so much to me and so many others. David Jenkins, Taika Waititi, Vico Ortiz, Alex Sherman, and the rest of the producers, directors, writers, cast and crew. I did try to list out everyone, but it took up the whole first page. My social media follows exploded when I began watching.
The thing is, I’ve never quite been comfortable in my skin. I knew something was off about my gender as early as 8, possibly earlier, but eight is when I remember actually thinking that I wasn’t a girl for the first time.
I wasn’t a boy, either, but it was the eighties, and I didn’t know the term non-binary, or that gender was as much a brain thing as a body thing. So I shoved it down, along with the thought that the kids at my school should hurry up and learn the lessons already so we could go onto the next thing and that I hated wearing dresses, except when I loved it.
And then, I just . . . didn’t think about gender for a long time. Not when trans people were the butt of all the jokes in the movies in the nineties, not when trans stories, real trans stories started getting told in the aughts.
Someone gave me the word agender, once, when I was curious and asked what might describe someone who felt neither man nor woman, and never had, and I went with that. I still go with that, or enby, whichever I’m comfortable with in the moment. I was forty. Thirty-two years of not even knowing I was looking for that word, and I was.
And then a year or so later, someone talked me into watching Our Flag Means Death.
I write. I’ve published. When you send a story out, you never know what other people are going to think of it, what symbolism they’re going to find, how they’re going to interpret this thing or that thing. So I don’t know if you realized when you finished filming the first season and sent it for edits, or finished the second season and watched us foam at the mouth for it, how the fans were going to react.
There are a lot more of us out in the world that don’t feel quite right in whatever gender box we’ve been put in than anyone realizes, I think. And I think a lot of us gender-weirdos are fans of this show.
It’s not just Stede, and his love for fine things. It’s Ed, with his hidden silk, and his softly admitting to “maybe” liking “a fine fabric.” It’s not just Jim being outed, and everyone going right back to normal after they figure out that that’s what Jim wants. It’s not even just Wee John’s wonderful performance as Calypso.
It’s also Wee John sitting down to sew and saying he used to sew dresses with his mom. It’s calling Izzy the ship’s “new unicorn” and it’s also Izzy wearing make up. It’s everyone wearing flowers.
It’s Spanish Jackie having nineteen husbands, and maybe some wives.
It’s a meme of any of the characters that’s just a screenshot and the word “gender” written across it.
It’s the concept of “assigned knives at birth”
And it’s the community that this show created to let us feel free to explore all of this. We can bounce ideas off of each other, we can explore new identities, and you - the cast, the crew, the writers of this show - you have given us a safe space to do so.
I’ve been on the outskirts of a lot of fan spaces. I’ve never wanted to step into them because at their core, they seemed so toxic and gatekept. I’ve never felt that from the fans here (we’re not perfect, and there are a lot of very angry arguments over things that I hope you never see).
So yeah, this is my love letter to Our Flag Means Death, the show that helped me figure out, at forty-three, that my gender is, well, me. And it doesn’t have to fit anyone else’s label.
Thank you for creating it.
Thank you for writing it.
Thank you for acting in it.
Jenn

A Thank You Letter to Vico Ortiz and David Jenkins

Our Flag Means Death is a show that is incredibly important to me. The characters are near and dear to my heart, especially Jim. Without this show and without Jim, I never would’ve come out to my family as non binary. Seeing Jim just live their life after coming out was so special. It felt like the show was telling me “that’s okay, that’s perfectly fine.” Jim is just about the first trans character I’ve witnessed who doesn’t feel like they take up space. Even in shows with solid representation, the fact of the characters identity is brought up so often, that even if the characters or the writers aren’t transphobic, it can nearly feel like that. I wholeheartedly understand the importance of depicting somebody experience an entire arc of gender exploration. But narratives like this often don’t land for me. I’ve found that this structure can make the characters trans-ness a plot point that needs to be resolved, something on a checklist to get done.
I think it’s incredibly powerful to tell a story of somebody like Jim, somebody who gets to say that they “go by Jim now” and not need to re-evaluate their life. Because honestly, it’s not always like that, and it’s amazing that we have Jim to tell us that it’s okay to be yourself, and for you to know that.
Inner peace with your identity isn’t a lack of depth, it doesn’t make your experiences invalid, it just makes you another human, living another life.♡
Thank you so much to everybody who brought Jim to life, they mean the world to me, and so many others around the world.
