Trans Varian Headcannon #1

Okay, so I like to imagine that Varian doesn't want to get top or bottom surgery because he's scared of the idea and makes him squeamish. So instead he wears chest binders to make his chest appear flat and take s some kind of alchemical hormones serum something like that to make his voice sound more masculine.

I also like to think that he still has periods (which are painful as hell). Because of this, he comes out to Nuru first about being trans while he's on his period before he asks her to make him some herbal tea to help with the painful cramps.

Hugo, would be the second to find out that Varian is trans after accidentally walking in on him changing into his clothes and notices the chest binder. And of course Varian panics and throws his journal at him before kicking him out. Then Hugo frantically apologizes and leaves the tent to give him privacy and just stands there in front of tent mentally processing what he had just seen. But this doesn't change his feelings for Varian at all and just ends up accepting and supporting Varian.

Yong is the last one to find out that Varian is trans after overhearing Nuru and Varian talking and he just suddenly joins in and blurts out: "VARIAN'S A GIRL!?" Until Varian kneels down to Yong's height, looks straight into his eyes and tells him, "No? I mean, I used to be when I was 9 years old. I'm trans."

What do you think is Hugo's gender identity? Cus I want to hear what you think Hugo's gender is and the story behind it.

EHEHEHE personally i think she’s genderfluid and uses he/she/they pronouns…….I think he was kind of an uncracked egg up until the trials though. like, he’s been in survival mode for so long that he’s never had the time or luxury to really think about himself or his identity….i think he’s had a lot of different disguises over his career though, and those personas are either male or female depending on what the situation calls for so he’s not a stranger to dressing femininely either.

but yeah…i think for a long time hugo just identified as male by default cuz like…what else would he be LOL. if he had any doubts at all they weren’t significantly hindering him or anything so he just buried them with all the other of the emotions he doesn’t want to feel. but like the closet is made of GLASS and this becomes especially obvious when she teams up with 3 other teenagers who are also transgender so sometimes she’ll just Say Shit and they all turn around and look at her like “…….🤨”

i have this very vivid scene in my head where varian comes out to the gang as trans and hes clearly really uneasy abt it. and hugo doesn’t know what to say so he just tries to relate by saying the first thing that comes to mind and goes “oh yeah i get it i mean. sometimes i wish i was a girl but like not all the time yk” and nuru and varian both just stop and stare at him

fast forward to post-trials though, and hugo’s been living in the castle with varian for about six months…it was REALLY messy for both of them while she was adjusting, but at this point shes finally started to let her guard down a little, and all of a sudden she has SO much free time and she has no idea what to do with any of it. she’s stealing collecting things, tinkering with all kinds of useless little gadgets, rapunzel is teaching her tons of little arts and crafts projects. overall shes pretty content despite everything. So anyways then the gender crisis hits them like a fucking freight train

honestly i’m like half joking when i say i think it started bc they just kept forgetting to cut their hair. like one day they looked in the mirror and they’re like “wow my hairs getting so long i kinda look like a girl lol. Wait”

AND AS FUNNY AS IT IS ITS SO. WILDLY UNFAMILIAR TO THEM. like all of a sudden theyre SO insecure for as far as they can tell, NO reason and it drives them CRAZY. i dont even think that hugo dislikes their masculine features after coming out, i think they embrace them if anything but its just like…going from 0 to 100 so fast and suddenly being so hyper aware of themselves in a way that they NEVER were before…having to realize that they’re definitely Not cis. it’s fucking TERRIFYING!!!

not to mention it hits him all at once during a time when he’s still frankly really paranoid about him and varian’s relationship, and he’s kinda walking on eggshells bc deep down he’s convinced that var’s just gonna get tired of him eventually and kick him out. its like he’s just waiting for the final nail in the coffin despite the fact that there is literally no coffin.

All that being said i think it takes him a while to work up the courage to talk to varian about it. and he knows he won’t like. hate him for being trans or anything (I sure hope he wouldn’t, at least, seeing as he is literally also trans) but varian’s already done SO much for him and helped him through literally everything already….he doesn’t want to burden him any more than he already has. he also cant comprehend that someone can just Like him, like, as a person, so he’s convinced himself that varian must see something specific in him right now and he’s afraid that if he changes himself drastically in any way then whatever varian saw in him just. won’t be there anymore. If that makes sense

as for who he actually goes to first- honestly i think it’d have to be lance. at least in my head lance was the first person hugo really started to bond with aside from varian….he didn’t start letting his guard down with rapunzel until quite a while after that. also i think he’s worried that if he tells rapunzel she’d end up accidentally spilling something to varian (which is like. Valid bc she’s a horrible liar) he’d definitely write a letter to nuru, too, but nuru is also in another kingdom, and that message takes a while to get to her, so it’s more something they talk about after the fact

when he finally does get a letter back after dumping this revelation on her it’s just like

“dearest hugo. upon reading your letter i desperately wanted to tell you that i told you so, but i realize that would be in poor taste, seeing as you are clearly struggling right now. Moreover,-“ /j

regardless of who she tells first, they obviously all support her and encourage her to talk to varian as well…And ofc varian hypes her up to no end when she finally does. i wanna say it’s a sweet emotional scene but i feel like varian was also under the assumption that she figured out the gender thing like a year ago /j

New Modern vat7k AU idea :D

I was listening to "A Human's Touch" by TWRP and Mckenna Rae so it was based off of that

In this story Varian and his friends are in collage and magic still exists

Basically Ulla is a sentient robot. While in the Eternal Library, she found a way to transfer her brain into a robot to get out. However, living as a robot sucks since she can't so lot's of things like cry, and she's not seen as a person.

She meets Varian, unaware it's her son. Trans Varian is canon in this universe btw so she just assumes her family is off somewhere. She plans to posess him or at least use him to posess someone and they sorta build a relationship.

On the other hand, Donella still gets Hugo to steal stuff for her. During a theft, Hugo spots Varian and some robot and when he tells Donella, she's like, "wait thats suspicious" and tells him to study the robot, and therefore befriend Varian.

Nuru, Yong, Raps, and everyone else are more like Varian's friends, and Raps is basically his sister (although not "technically" but yk)

Eventually Ulla finds out that Varian is her son and she's conflicted and the big climax is where she tries to posess either Varian or someone close to him idk and he ends up needing to break her. I'll try to post some art on it soon but trust me I'm cooking

oh my gosh my time has come (you will probably regret this)

so first off imma reference my like three other posts i've made on the topic because i'm a nerd

starting with lgbt+ headcanons-

hugo is genderfluid and likes men i don't make the rules (he/she/they)

i am very much a trans varian truther. in my mind they use he/they pronouns and is also very biromantic

transing nuru's gender too- i love transfemme nuru (she/her) and also she's a lesbian definitely

yong gets the aroace nonbinary treatment

okay moving on to headcanons about languages-

its canon that varian speaks like three languages but i headcanon that he is fluent in coronan, saporian, and is learning the dark kingdom's language

hugo definitely knows so many languages because he gets around. i like to think he's fluent in ingvarran, coronan and bayangoran

i love the idea that yong is still learning coronan and that hugo sometimes has to translate for him or they repeat things for him sometimes because varian talks too fast or they use an unfamiliar word or like accents trip him up

on a seperate note in my mind coronan is german, bayangoran is mandarin, ingvarran is farsi (based on this post)

one of my favorite possible vat7k storylines is when hugo finds out about varian's past and i love the idea that he found out because of a wanted poster they found- perfect angst potential. on that note, i also believe that the rest of them would have heard about varian (the alchemist) when he was still wanted for example

hugo would have been told about him from donella, whether he was always told to be better and be like varian, or that he admired varian and thought he was really cool and dreamed of working with him

nuru had heard about him through horror stories about the kidnapping and attempted murder of the royal family. she most likely would have been scared of varian when she found out, not trusting him not to hurt her

i honestly think yong wouldn't understand. i don't think his parents would have told him if they even knew, and he would have been like seven at the time, so

hugo was varian's bi awakening except not really. he had liked guys before that but hadn't realized that was what he was feeling

they definitely met cass while on their adventures and she definitely had a girlfriend

Things I must state before I get called out:

If you want to headcanon Varian or any other character as trans because it makes you feel closer to the character or not, then by all means do so. You’re valid and this is perfectly reasonable. But remember, Varian is voiced by a male actor who is Jeremy Jordan and he is a male since his pronouns are he/him and is a male character.

I may face slack for not sharing the trans Varian HC personally and only using it when it's necessary and just accepting him as a male character, but I’m in the mindset that we need more characters who were born male that do not conform to society's norms.

It’s incredibly important for boys/men to see that they can sew, cook, and clean without these activities being treated as if they are somehow emasculating. Getting rid of toxic gender stereotypes is the first step to a future where people can be accepted as equals.

Varian is bisexual which I give a pass, there are people who use the trans tag when all they really want to do is gender-swap the character to fit their smut preferences. Objectification is not representation. To be clear, I'm not saying all trans smut is like this. The type of storytelling I'm talking about is obvious to spot. You'll know it if/when you see it. Though hopefully you won't have to see it.

For Hugo, I am looking forward for him to be pansexual much like how Robin Hood from Robin Hood: Mischief in Sherwood is. Whilst Varian is bisexual for all honesty, as the prince does get headcanon as bisexual but he is mostly headcanon as gay.

Varian would interact with Nuru and Yong much more and develop a close friendship but he can have a complex and developed one with Hugo and soon grew to have a friendship to a lover dynamic.

As I stated, every Varigo shipper would have a different preference, but this is mine and you're free to add yours.

Also Cass and Raps each having ones in their respective colours bc of being past users. Also yes this implies the entirety of ppl who helped in the S3 finale has blonde/gold and/or turquoise/blue "scars" from the S3 finale somewhere in their hair or on their body)

Hmm... I don't actually think so!

Pretty much all of my OCs that have potentially dark secrets either don't keep them a secret (or are very casual about it) or aren't hiding them behind cheerfulness and instead of gloomy.

I would say the closest thing to that would be Synthia, but he doesn't hide the neglect and abuse he gets from his mom. He's very casual about it because he dissociates her hate for him which is why he's always very happy.

Oh! I think technically Carna tries to hide faer kleptomania through cheerful attitudes, but that is more like playful lying from being raised in a rich and spoiled environment (the second time being raised since the first time was in a dysfunctional house with an abusive mother and neglectful father). Though that isn't really a dark secret, so doesn't really count.

I guess technically Ilia hides his past by being happy, but it's not like he is actively hiding it. He's more of a lying through omission kind of person. So if you don't ask the right questions, you aren't getting the full story from him (which is why the curses think he's a human when they first meet him).

The only other OC I can think of would be a much older OC named Emi that I haven't drawn in a while. She wears a mask with a permanent smile on it and has a pretty cheerful attitude as she hunts down humans to collect their teeth and eat their faces.

I haven't thought of her much in a while, but she isn't really hiding her past/dark secrets. Though, since I am thinking of her again, I can make her into an entity and she definitely would be a character who hides her actions behind friendliness! Very much looking like she is a perfectly friendly entity on the outside but a human hunter in reality.

Pretty much all of my OCs are some flavor of queer. Mainly asexual, aromantic, or aroace. I also tend to have a lot of lesbians or wlw as well as trans or nonbinary OCs.

The ones who are cishet are Sharon, Matvey, Martha, Aria probably, Nuru, Sarabi, Joust experimented a bit but is cishet. Quida is cishet, so is Noa and Asa. Honestly Asa might be something, but for now he is cishet. I think that's all but I'm sure I'm forgetting someone.

A lot more cishet OCs than I remember lol! But otherwise, pretty much all my other OCs are somewhere on the LGBTQ+ spectrum!

Yes and no!

I compartmentalize my OCs depending on where they are from. So a JJK OC would be in JJK while an NSR OC is only in NSR.

However, because I made the Eriverse, technically all my OCs can now live in a single universe! Even single fandom universes like JJK can be connected to the Eriverse through Ilia now! Meaning that event though they aren't in a shared universe, they share a multiverse through Ilia's powers.

And speaking of multiverses, I have a LOT of NSR AUs that I basically turned into OCs in my head as they are so far removed from the base NSR premise. Though these are in a different multiverse compared to the one connected to the Eriverse. If that makes sense lol.

So yea, yes and no. It depends really. For the most part, if I want them to be connected then they can be in the same universe. If not then they aren't. Really depends on what I want to do in the moment.

thinking about varian only he doesn’t come out as trans until so much later. like, end of vat7k later and in tangled he just has a crisis of ‘am i a lesbian or am i bi. bi. i’m bi i definitely had a crush on flynn rider but...but it didn’t feel the same way as cassandra wait am i a lesbian then? it felt different but maybe it just feels different when you like boys and when you like girls. ok bi them. i’m a bisexual girl and there’s nothing else to question about myself i have it all figured out!’ 

then he goes on his journey through the seven kingdoms and meets hugo and gets another horrible dose of I Have A Crush On You and Gender Envy. Hugo calls him all of those lil nicknames as well as stuff like ‘lil lady (derogatory)’ and ‘princess (derogatory)’ and it’s the only ones that make him genuinely upset to the point where hugo actually stops using them and just says them to nuru instead. and he doesn’t know why until they defeat his mom and confess their love and later varian is just trying to sleep but his mind is buzzing and he’s going back through his entire journey and just shoves hugo awake 

“HUGO I THINK I’M A BOY!!!!”

“Can you not? Drop a bomb on me like that at two am? Please? Congrats on the gender, can I go back to sleep?”

hugo’s not surprised he’s like ‘congrats on being the last person to figure it out.’ varian shoves him out of the room bc he’s no help and tells him to go get nuru instead
