it is valid to set a boundary by saying, "i dont want to see this". it is NOT valid to try and control what fans do, and this is anne rice levels of attempt at control over fandom. you can set a boundary, but you are not allowed to control what kind of art people make. (note: that in particular, controlling what art is allowed to exist, is fascism 101).

besides that, copyright doesn't apply to transformative works, which is mostly what yaelokre is complaining about, so their little cease and desist copyright takedown google form isn't even going to do anything but encourage minors to hunt down n-sfw content, which is INCREDIBLY irresponsible and unsafe. copyright your characters all you want, but that DEFINITELY doesn't stop people from making batman and mickey mouse porn.

this is so unbelievably immature, and the funniest part is that it isn't even going to stop people from doing it. and the people who WERE interested in checking out yaelokre's meadowlark aren't going to now, because this level of ridiculousness is just going to make people point and laugh and move on to better things instead.

ive never seen anybody kill their own project this hard, it's almost funny.

i’m sorry but this is so shitty. i get not wanting to see nsfw of your characters, and i totally respect any creator setting boundaries and asking people not to send them that stuff. HOWEVER, you have to accept that once you make your characters public, people are going to treat them in ways you don’t personally like.

making a COPYRIGHT FORM so people go on a witch hunt, just so you can copyright strike them (falsely, mind you. fanfic and fanart fall under transformative works) is such a gross thing to do.

it doesn’t matter if the characters were based off your childhood, or personal experiences. it doesn’t matter how tightly you want to guard them and keep them safe and pure. the only solutions are setting boundaries between you and your fanbase, removing the characters from public eye and stop making content for them publicly, or learn to ignore it.

going all anne rice over people sexualizing a character is not the way to go though.

If we ever appear as if we are being taken by some sort of frenzied, desperate madness, that is probably because that is exactly what is happening. We apologize for this sincerely. We are having to watch a handful of rich idiots burn down everything in some sort of horrific slow-motion train crash and every day that passes feels more and more like we are frantically pulling scrolls out of the library of alexandria while watching a thousand more things go up in flames to be lost forever. It is a feeling of a sorts. We are not especially fond of it.

The reason I probably shouldn't be allowed to make movies is I have no impulse control and I would immediately make something called Revenge Of The Dead Tranny Hooker. It would be about a trans woman trying to break into acting, but no one wants to hire her for anything except playing a sex worker who gets murdered. Then one day she does an open casting call which runs her through a series of increasingly bizarre line readings, which it turns out are meant to summon an eldritch demon to grant the movie producer god-like powers.

The culmination is supposed to be sex on the casting couch, but she ditches at the last minute, destroying the ritual and splintering the extradimensional entity across California. She unknowingly receives powerful extradimensional blood, while the rest of the fragments seek out the powerful and violent people of the world. Meanwhile the movie producer uses his new powers to transform his PAs into henchcreatures, and sends them after the protag to finish her off. She discovers her new powers in the ensuing fight, which also seem to be gradually altering her body every time she uses them.

The rest of the movie is a steadily escalating game of cat and mouse between trans woman and movie producer. While the former transformers the fragments into powerful psychic weapons like chainsaws and spiked bats, the later uses fragments to make himself bigger and physically stronger. At first the fights are short and brutal, the protag outmatched and outgunned, but she gets more confident to the point of an anarchic battle of against the LAPD led by a demonic police captain, including a scene where she stands on the roof of a speeding police car and rips the driver through the windshield.

Her eventual form is some kind hyper sexual draconic mantid squid rippling with biomechanoid components. In the fight with the producer he thinks he's winning by tearing apart the last of her human flesh, but this just complete her transformation, letting her easily overwhelm him. It's implied from that point forward she plans to conquer the world.

Nova Prime enacts “The Expansion,” for which the first wave of cold constructed Cybertronians are brought online

Megatron (1st cycle 012) and Orion Pax are born under Functionalism. Megatron is one of the first cold constructed mechs.

The Constructicons are created

Nova Prime disappears into the dead universe and Nominus Prime takes leadership under a new corrupt senate. Expansion is put on hold

Megatron works as a miner in Tarn (demolition=menial labor class) Megs wanted to be a medic but quickly gives up on that dream

Orion Pax works as a dock worker in Iacon (truck=transport class) OP wanted to be an archivist and is able to work his way up to it due to having access to greater social mobility

Cybertron experiences no shortage of violence: civil wars, riots, off-world campaigns, and alien invasions continue to happen sporadically throughout its history. Wanting to bolster Cybertron’s airforce, a new style of war-frame is designed and mass produced. These cold constructed jets received the classification: Seekers (after their intended function: seek and destroy)

Skywarp is born (6th cycle 023) as a first generation Seeker and was immediately sent to the military. He is then at some point reassigned to spec ops due to his powerful outlier ability.

Seekers offline too easily so the next few waves of Seekers are sent to the Cybertronian War Academy for training before joining the military

Skywarp is sent to Praxus and subjected to intensive study. Space bridge and quantum based hyper-drive technology will later see great advancements thanks to his contributions to science

Thundercracker is brought online as one of the last batch of Seekers (24th cycle 124). By then the Cybertronian War Academy roster was too full so he was given the (limited) option to pick his vocation. He chose to work as a courier in Vos.

“Those who were constructed cold face institutionalized apartheid; although this eventually ends due to mounting public pressure, including mass protests and marches. However, intrinsic prejudice against constructed cold Transformers persists in among a sizable percentage of the population.” -tfwiki

Megatron and pax become friends while advocating against cold construct apartheid and functionalism. Pax considered Megatron like a brother to him but Megatron always felt distanced by their class divide

Scientists have been pulling sparks out of the Matrix faster than frames can be constructed for them. Sparks without ready frames will be “frozen” for future use

The Matrix "runs dry" (is replaced by a fake) and cold construction as a common method of creation stops entirely

The Senate’s evil science division, the Institute, establishes Shadowplay and Empurata as common practices

The energy crisis forces a planet-wide rationing of resources

Cryak commissions a Seeker frame to be constructed and has a thawed spark placed in it. Starscream is born (22nd cycle 415).

5 million BCE

Starscream escapes

Thundercracker finds Starscream

4.5 million BCE

Due to the energy crisis, tension is high between city-states. The Senate establish the sport of Gladiatorial games to try and mitigate the animosity. These games are held in Kaon and become very popular

Starscream defies Functionalism by pursuing many different jobs. Whenever he would get in trouble or fall on hard times he’d turn to Thundercracker for help

Orion Pax encourages Megatron to publish his political writings

Orion Pax joins the police force

The first appearance of the pacifist grassroots movement calling themselves Decepticons. Their ideology is based on Megatron’s first published treatise

Megatron is caught in a bar fight and is wrongfully arrested. Whirl beats him up in jail, changing Megatron’s perspective on violence

Megatron loses his job due to automation and signs up to be a gladiator

Starscream goes to college (not really, I just like to call the period of time where he went to work as a Scientist in Iacon "college" cuz it's funny XD) and meets Skyfire. The two become close

Senator Protius promises to make the Decepticons a real political party by way of census. In truth he just wanted a list of names so they can shadowplay all the Decepticons. Skyfire almost signs on but Starscream convinces him not to

Megatron continues to publish his writings while gaining fame as a gladiator. The Decepticon movement takes a shift from pacifism towards terrorism

Skywarp likes watching the gladiator fights whenever they are assigned to patrol the events  

The gladiator Ravage finds a discarded Soundwave struggling to deal with his telepathic powers and takes him under his wing

Skywarp plays a prank on the government

Starscream and Skyfire go off-world on an expedition, intending to travel to the Sol system and back (they're gone for about 40 turns on the Cybertronian calendar, or approximately 50,000 Earth years)

The Senate discover Nominus’ matrix is a fake and have him secretly killed

The Senate enacts the Clampdown

Thundercracker loses his job and is forced to join the military

4.3 million BCE

Senator Shockwave gets shadowplayed

Sentinel Prime takes leadership

The Decepticons begin secretly forming an army under Megatron

Orion Pax and Megatron break up

Starscream returns to Cybertron without Skyfire and is subsequently tried for Skyfire’s murder, for which he was found innocent. He is still expelled from the Academy

Starscream goes back to Vos, and crashes on Thundercracker's couch for a while

Thundercracker takes Starscream to watch a gladiator fight, which is where Starscream takes note of Megatron

Despite his reservations, Starscream joins the military in order to learn how to fight as well as gain rapport with the military Seekers

While stealing a military airship, Megatron finds Skywarp locked up in the ship's engine room and rescues him. Skywarp joins the Decepticons

Tension between Vos and Tarn is at an all time high, leading to outright civil war between the two city-states

4 million BCE

The Bombing of Vos ends the civil war

Megatron shows up to recruit Decepticons in the aftermath of the Vos-Tarn civil war. Starscream stands up and gives a speech that convinces the majority of Vos' Seeker population to join the Decepticons

Starscream joins the Decepticons

Starscream uses Skywarp to get close to Megatron

The Decepticons threaten war by launching an attack on Iacon. Starscream leads the group that levels the Academy to the ground. He doesn't feel better.

Thundercracker is deployed to help quell the Decepticon activity in Iacon. Thundercracker confronts Starscream and Starscream begs him for help. Thundercracker joins the Decepticons

Megatron is captured and almost gets shadowplayed, but escapes thanks to Starscream, Skywarp, and Soundwave

Megatron no longer thinks the current system can be changed, even with violence. Now his aim is to burn it all down and rebuild from scratch.

Starscream and Soundwave massacre the entire Senate 

Shockwave joins the Decepticons

Megatron officially declares war

Megatron defeats Sentinel Prime and Zeta Prime takes leadership

The Fall of the First Five Cities

Zeta Prime attempts a war crime, Orion Pax and Megatron team up to stop him, and then Megatron betrays Orion and leaves him to die

Orion Pax becomes Optimus Prime

The Battle of Sherma Bridge, where Optimus Prime and Megatron first clash (allegedly)

Praxus falls

Starscream becomes Air Commander. He appoints Thundercracker and Skywarp as his Wing Second and Third. The Trine is complete

Decepticons pull ahead and as a last ditch effort the Autobots thaw previously frozen sparks to construct a new army of MTOs

They crash on prehistoric Earth and remain in stasis for one million years

The war continues on Cybertron, lead by Shockwave and Elita1

The Decepticons overthrow Shockwave and he flees to Luna 2

Hot Rod gathers a rag tag crew and leaves Cybertron on the Lost Light in search of Optimus Prime

The Lost Light discovers the Dead Universe and Nova Prime

Cyclonus joins the Lost Light crew

Shockwave clones Sunstorm

The Great Shutdown: Cybertron completely runs out of energy and everyone falls into stasis

The Lost Light return to Cybertron. Upon finding everyone in stasis, they venture back into space to find a solution

1984

Reawakened on Earth, the Autobots continue to wage their battle to destroy the evil forces of the Decepticons

The Decepticons rebuild the Nemisis into the Victory and try to head back to Cybertron, but they crash into the ocean after Autobot interference

Megatron orders Shockwave to build him a space bridge while he collects energy on Earth to revive Cybertron

Megatron begins abusing Starscream

Typical G1 Cartoon shenanigans occur

Wheeljack builds the Dinobots

The Decepticons find Skyfire in the ice. Starscream tries to get Skyfire to join the Decepticons, but Skyfire refuses when Starscream proves willing to harm humans

Starscream starts to have nightmares. He stops sleeping well

1991

Shockwave completes his space bridge and visits Earth, only to find Megatron has completely lost the plot. After serving on Earth for a few years he goes back to Luna 2 with the intent on finishing his doomsday device, only to find Sunstorm has escaped. He begins migrating his lab to the Decepticon's ocean base on Earth in order to finish his work there.

Megatron obtains frozen sparks from Cybertron and builds the Stunticons. The Autobots rescue half the sparks he had brought over and create the Aerialbots

Starscream's plots to overthrow Megatron are becoming more and more unhinged. At some point he goes to Cybertron and steals some incarcerated memory components and builds the Combaticons, effectively freeing these criminals (including Swindle) from jail

Hot Rod and the Lost Light crew arrive on Earth

2008

Megatron goes too far

Thundercracker defects

2009

After the Decepticons destroyed several human cities, the Autobots finally defeat Megatron with the help of their human allies at the Battle of New York

Seeing that Megatron has fallen, Starscream declares himself the new leader, but Soundwave rescues Megatron's mostly dead body and convinces Shockwave to try and fix him

Optimus Prime dies of his injuries and Bumblebee becomes leader

Hot Rod, now going by Rodimus, leaves Earth on the Lost Light

2010

The humans are justifiably angry with the Cybertronians for destroying their world. Unable to leave the planet, the remaining Decepticons either get captured or go into hiding. 

Thundercracker watches a lot of TV and is now friends with Bumblebee

The Autobots are helping capture Decepticons on Earth

Starscream struggles to lead the Decepticons

2011

Sunstorm arrives on Earth

Starscream frees the Decepticons from human containment, but they still wont follow him

2012

The humans have rebuilt the cities that were destroyed by the Decepticons three years ago

Everyone basically living as tho the war is over

Megatron is brought back by Shockwave and immediately goes to punish Starscream for doing a poor job leading the Decepticons, even tho Starscream did his best.

Skywarp's loyalty to Megatron finally breaks apart, and he gets them out of there before Megatron turns violent, effectively defecting from the Decepticons

Starscream tries to apologize to Thundercracker in order to get his help with fighting Megatron, but Thundercracker turns him down. Starscream shoots Thundercracker in the back, much to Skywarp’s dismay

Starscream and Skywarp hide out on Earth for a bit

Megatron is trying to gather his scattered forces, specifically the combiners

Starscream and Skywarp have an argument and part ways for a bit

Starscream comes across some Decepticon activity and attacks them

Megatron shows up and begins beating Starscream to a pulp

Skywarp jumps in to save Starscream but is shot mid-warp and his warp drive destabilizes

With no other option, Starscream turns to the Autobots for help, with Skywarp in tow

Thundercracker gets a dog

1 year later (2013): Combiner Wars, which leads directly into Dark Cybertron [feat. Sunstorm] followed by the Presidential Arc, which lasts about 3-5 years ending in the Apology Comic

DEBUNKING SOME MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT RAFAYEL’S LORE + THEORY

(may contain spoilers for rafayel’s myths “sea of golden sand” and “forgotten sea”, his main story branch “land of secret flames”, his third anecdote “siren’s song” and the memories “fragrant dream” and “your fragrance”)

• “lemuria was destroyed after the sea god’s ceremory”

this one is a very curious one to me since his myth explicitly states rafayel saved lemuria and the kingdom only sunk many years after his death

• “rafayel betrayed his people by choosing mc over lemuria”

ok, here is when i feel people get a little confused about what really happened with lemuria in the three different timelines (main story, forgotten sea and sea of golden sand)

i think it’s very complicated to take what we are presented in “sea of golden sand” at face value since what we see in the “forgotten sea” myth directly contradicts what we learn from it, for years lemurians believed mc stole the sea god’s heart in the coming-of-age ceremony what we know isn’t true and rafayel was the one who offered his heart to her

the true is we don’t know why the seas dried out, we don’t even know if mc really has the sea god’s heart since the myth invites you to follow rafayel’s skeptical perception on lemurians legends

we aren’t supposed to believe these legends, so we cannot really tell what rafayel did that angered the deep sea since, in “forgotten sea”, we only have the mention of a lie rafayel told the deep sea to save both lemuria and mc

i’ve seen many fans saying that rafayel is facing the consequences of his actions, however the main story lacks sufficient information about what happened to lemuria in that timeline, but one thing we can be sure of is that rafayel was just a child when it disappeared

claiming rafayel betrayed his people for mc isn’t just a simplification of his personal conflict but isn’t even canon accurate since not only he was just a little boy but the text clearly hints ever may be involved

• “rafayel had his scales and tail cut out by mc”

i keep seeing this being thrown around as a “sad rafayel fact” and i don’t know where people got it from

what i think happened is that people mixed information from two very different sources (rafayel’s “siren song” anecdote and the “fragrant dream” memory)

in his past, rafayel met a detective who is convinced he’s a merman seeking revenge after being deceived by a human woman, however, these claims are purely speculative and there’s no evidence to support the idea that this actually happened in any timeline

there’s also the 4 stars memory “fragrant dream” where mc has a dream in which she becomes a sea witch and rafayel appears to her in his merman form and requests a potion that would transform him into a human, the dream is heavily inspired by “the little mermaid” tale, making it difficult to fully discern which parts were merely a dream and which ones were based on real events

i personally believe it the dream could also be her brain processing trauma from when she was stuck as ever’s lab rat since the “ingredients” she asks rafayel are the same substances extracted from lemurians during the experiments and we know rafayel was also one of their victims

whatever the dream is complete or partially fictional, there’s one thing we can be sure of: mc never harmed rafayel, he’s the one who offers his scales and blood to abyss witch mc to be used in the potion so he could turn her back into human

+ my interpretation of their bond

in “forgotten sea” we learned that the bond serves two purposes: igniting the temple’s flame and allowing the sea god to access the tome of the sea god, where lemurian prophecies are recorded

since we know rafayel successfully ignited the flame and we saw him and mc using the bond to read the tome in both “sea of golden sand” and his main story branch, we can only assume rafayel and mc concluded the ceremony that day, they are bound, mc is the sea god’s follower

but then, what happened to anger the deep sea?

well, i believe mc was the one meant to give up on her freedom and autonomy to stay in lemuria with rafayel, however he fell in love with her and wanted her to be free as he himself felt trapped there, directly mirroring princess mc’s feelings in the “sea of golden sand” myth

his resolution to save his people and not condemn the woman he loved to a life of subservience was to pledge devotion to her, sacrificing his freedom for hers and his devotion to her was what ignited the temple’s flame

the lemurian bond symbolizes their love but also symbolizes control, in rafayel’s “siren’s song” anecdote, the detective who accuses his of being a siren and the responsible for the man is the audience’s death, he references something that seems to be similar to rafayel’s chest mark as an indicator of lemurians’ influence on humans

due to rafayel's love for mc, the sea god is now subordinate to a human woman, what obviously would displease the deep sea since we know from his main story branch, the deep sea spirit can take over rafayel’s body and mc is able to bring him back to himself through their bond

as long as their bond exists, the deep sea will never be able to use rafayel as its sea god, this could explain why the sea is angry at him and wants him to kill mc in “sea of golden sand”, their bond is the only thing granting rafayel freedom from the influences of the deep sea

tidal embrace, mc’s weapon that comes with god of the tides as companion has the following description: “a scepter symbolizing the power of sea god. it is unknown to all that the god had gifted his heart and authority to his eternal follower before leaving the temple.”

in the midst of your solitude, you hum a tune that your mother used to lull you to sleep when you were a young siren. your voice mimics the gentleness of a mother's love, a cradling feeling of tenderness and comfort. slowly, it shifts to a song, your voice becoming louder and alluring.

and just like a serenade, your song had captivated a certain saurian hunter's attention, he stands on the opposite edge of the spring right across where you were situated in. your eyes still closed and immersed in your enchanting euphony.

"i believe i'm not under a spell, but allow me to compliment your melody. may i stay here and listen?"

kinich fixes his composure, hiding the nervousness inside his pocket. but oh, the moonlight acts like a spotlight on your figure, your true nature completely open for him to realize that you are not human at all.

but kinich isn't fazed, neither does he yield the urge to capture you in exchange for the prestige that comes with catching a siren alive.

"are you not afraid?"

instead, you were the one afraid, wrapping your arms around your torso as if it's any help in shield your true form from his green and amber eyes.

at this point, kinich does not intend to supress his longing need for you. he's conscious and sober, implying that a siren's song is not all about luring prey into the waters.

sometimes, just like yn, a siren's song is an open book to her innermost thoughts and heartbeat's poems. it doesn't need to hold words for kinich to depict the sentiments carried into the wind as she sings; to be known, to be understood.

Often is getting hauled around like a toddler by his older brothers. Courting Blitz, to the disappointment of Ratchet (Oracle does not care)

Blitz - Foundling of Bulkhead. Has also partially been raised by Wheeljack, as the two are close friends. Was also raised around the Autobots’ combiner teams, but the Aerialbots took much more of a shine to him due to his general attitude and behavior. Heavy hitter with a love for making pun jokes. Thinks the Wreckers are cool as all shit. Isn’t good with emotions, but will give hugs if you need them. he gives good hugs. Absolutely in love with Oracle, and thinks it’s hilarious that Ratchet is salty about them courting.

Ranger - Son of Optimus Prime and Elita One. Youngest sibling of Arcee and Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime. His spark separated way too early, and as such many essential systems failed to online or develop properly. He cannot take energon by mouth, and must have it introduced to his system via tubing, as well as requiring a form of ‘pacemaker’ to keep his spark working properly. His ventilation system often needs recalibrating and working to keep them cooling him properly. Too sweet for his own good, and sees the good in everyone. This often gets him into trouble. Got stranded with Stormshot of the Alpha Trine once, and helped save his life - leading them to fall helplessly in love with one another. He bullies Oracle relentlessly due to how often he is in the medbay (but they’re very good friends)

Nightlock - the oldest of the Alpha Trine and Megatron and Starscream’s sparklings. Was created as an attempt to combine the twos’ best qualities into a super soldier, but their seeker genetics caused the spark to split into the trine, spreading the traits among all three brothers. The golden child, and Megatron’s favorite. Keeps his mouth shut and does what he’s told. An absolute nightmare on the battlefield due to how adept he is at his job. Harsh and rough around the edges. 100% brainwashed by his sire. After his brothers left, he loses an optic to one of his sire’s fits, which frightens him into rethinking his entire life, enough to where he offers to become a double agent against Megatron. Changes his name to Nightwaker after the war

Stormshot - The middle mech of the Alpha Trine and Megatron and Starscream’s sparklings. Created as an attempt to combine the twos’ best qualities into a super soldier, but their seeker genetics caused the spark to split into the trine, spreading the traits among the brothers. Typically forgotten about by his creators. The hard hitter of his brothers. Absolutely massive in both height and weight. Despite it, he’s not fond of violence, and if it is not necessary he will not engage. He wanted to be a dancer, had he not been sparked during the war. Almost killed Prime’s kid when they got stranded together out of fear of being taken prisoner by the autobots. When Ranger let him go, he would end up forming a friendship that later turned to love towards him. Defects from the Decepticons to the Autobots to be with Ranger after his sire threatened his life one too many times. Would do anything for his brothers.

Crossfire - The youngest of the Alpha Trine and Megatron and Starscream’s sparklings. Created as an attempt to combine the twos’ best qualities into a super soldier, but their seeker genetics caused the spark to split into the trine, spreading the traits among the brothers. The scapegoat of the family. Has an outlier ability that affects his voice. The volume of his voice correlates to damage that can be done, almost akin to a sonic boom combined with directly damaging ones’ audials. He cannot shut it off, however, and wears an inhibitor device that will shock him if he raises his voice above an ‘acceptable level’ without being permitted by a higher ranked official, usually his creators. Speaks primarily in a whisper. Incredibly anxious, and suffers from panic attacks and severe self isolation. I will never forget the first time I encountered the groundbreaking 1991 work of Cuban-born queer artistFelix González-Torres called "Untitled" (Portrait of Ross in L.A.).

A pile of shiny candies in a museum gallery beckoned me to hesitantly grab and eat one. Then I read the label explaining the installation: "This is González-Torres's unconventional portrait of his partner, Ross Laycock, who died of an AIDS-related illness in 1991. The candies' combined weight, 175 pounds, corresponds to Laycock's ideal weight before he got ill. Visitors are invited to sample the sweets. As the candy disappears, the pile shrinks in mass and weight, reenacting the debilitating effects of Laycock's illness."

When I understood the profound meaning of this installation as an AIDS memorial, and realized how, as the museum keeps replenishing the pile, Felix is giving his partner eternal life, I burst into tears, experiencing the transformative power of art.

Felix, who died from AIDS complications in 1996, invites the viewer to participate in his works, which combine a minimalistic aesthetic with a very personal and political stance imbued with identities tied to race, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic and immigrant status.

There is probably no artist more identified with the AIDS crisis than Felix — he once famously compared his role to "a virus, an imposter, an infiltrator" seeking to "always replicate myself together with those institutions" of power. His seminal works have turned him into one of the most important artists of the late '80s and early '90s, with his message reverberating louder than ever in our present times.

I recently flew to Washington D.C., to view a retrospective of Felix's work titled "Always to Return," showing at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery until July 6.

My worries began when the exhibition's introductory sign omitted Felix's connection to the AIDS crisis, highlighting instead the "multiple dynamic meanings of his work." My fears turned into outrage when I read the museum label for "Untitled" (Portrait of Ross in L.A.), which, instead of explaining the installation's title and meaning, refers to "175 pounds as ideal weight," not specifically Ross's.

Also, the museum displays the candy on a narrow path along the floor instead of in a pile, expressing on a separate label that it is entitled to "decide the size and configuration for this installation as well as to whether to replenish the candy." Be that as it may, the Smithsonian's chosen set-up destroys the monumental allegorical and emotional impact of seeing Felix's candy pile diminish.

When I posted about this erasure on my Instagram on December 19, the post received a visceral response from hundreds of readers and museum visitors who shared my indignation, including a story posted by actor Matt Bomer, saying, "Please stop erasing queer history @smithsoniannpg. Honor the intent of the artists you display. Please help if you can."

The museum's social media account tepidly responded to my Instagram post: "The focus of the exhibition is to highlight Felix's revolutionary work in portraiture. Across the exhibition and its various locations, we have put his artworks in conversation with the museum's collection — including portraits of queer figures — to provide further context around the artist's practice." It also noted that "references" to Laycock and Felix's life are found "throughout the show."

The irony is that, by not explaining what Portrait of Ross in L.A. truly means, the National Portrait Gallery has turned his work into an esoteric cypher, depriving visitors from experiencing Felix's revolutionary work in portraiture. Instead of inducing emotion and tears, I witnessed people blissfully taking pictures of pretty candy — empty calories on the floor robbed of their stirring spirit.

Another exhibition label, which unfruitfully connects Felix's work to the queer literary icon Walt Whitman, "who requested medicinal candy for injured soldiers," also ignores a golden opportunity to explain Felix's intention. As the catalog is not yet available to supply additional information, even the museum's staff is in the dark. When I explained the installation's meaning to staff at the information desk, they gasped and said, "Now it makes sense."

What makes this erasure even more unfathomable is that it's taking place at the National Portrait Gallery, which included this same installation in a 2010 show, "Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture."The show's co-curator, Jonathan D. Katz, described "Untitled" (Portrait of Ross in LA) in this Smithsonian video then as "an emblem of the AIDS crisis."

Katz explains in this video how "it was important for Felix to get his work in museums and, to do so, he had to speak indirectly about AIDS, bypassing the censorship and homophobic resistance that followed Jesse Helms and the crisis around the representation of gay male sexuality after the Corcoran Gallery canceled the Robert Mapplethorpe exhibition in 1989."

Katz also throws light into some of the evocative meanings elicited by "Untitled" (Portrait of Ross in L.A.): "When we put the candy in our mouth, we participate in the diminishment, directly and personally, of his partner. We also engage in the Catholic ritual of communion and potentially take contagion into ourselves."

Instead of exploring these poignant and provocative interpretations, it's devastating to see how the labels at the current Smithsonian retrospective focus on banal questions such as, "Can I eat a portrait? Is it OK to take something from a museum? Is this art whether or not I do these things? We leave these decisions to you."
