I have been obsessed with @madamadamiu s lost light cat shelter AU so here is my headcannon for drifts backstory (I scribbled this out as fast as humanly possible) :

Deadlock escapes animal control when they bust megatron’s colony, only for wing to hit him with his car almost immediately after. He raced him to a vet and ended up adopting him.

Wing thinks he has a gray coat, until he tries to wash him…. (This is how I’m incorporating the frame and color scheme change lmao)

Wing dies of an unexpected heart attack a year or so later, resulting in drift ending up at the lost light cat shelter.

He loves his insane cat!! Drift appreciates him, and wing isn’t so lonely anymore :)

while physical affection may not come as effortless for him compared to others, there is one position that voids that previous observation. wing throughly enjoys concentrating on your words, listening as they reverberate up through your chest and past your lips. while paying attention, he's entranced by your voice and how soft and gentle it is, oftentimes just above a whisper when it's just the two of you. secrets are hummed between your hand to his audial, tiny fingers cupping his cheek as you mumble sentences only he is meant to hear.

"hey," you'd run your fingers over the plating of his forearm, vying for his attention even if you unknowingly already had it. "yes, my love?" he'd return easily, searching to find any sort of front to your expression when your words don't quite match how you sound. he's likely very good at reading body language, knowing when you're not being entirely truthful in succession's of 'I'm fine's'. wing is mesmerized by your colorful iris', knowing there's likely something amiss when they don't hold that usual glimmer of playfulness and benevolence.

wing's observation skills go hand in hand with intently listening to his s/o talk. it's somewhat of a reminder that you're there, reminding him to live in the moment rather than dwell on things beyond his control. he could pick up on your minuscule nuisances at the snap of a finger, finding some mild frustration builds when you aren't so forthcoming in sharing your woes. he'd never pry, never dispense that disappointment when you are clearly already down, but it does linger. "I don't want to ruin the moment by complaining," you'd finally extend, knowing somewhere in the back of your mind that you've already spoiled the already minor amount of time you're awarded to see him.

"complaining?" he'd respond, leaning forward as a servo settles on either side of you, successful in trapping you beneath his figure. "no, never. you could never ruin anything, y/n. I'd like to talk such unhappiness through with you, if you'd be so inclined." at each word, he moves closer, only until you're just about nose to nose and have no means to escape such a conversation. not that you'd particularly want to, knowing there's not another soul that can give advice like wing can.

runs a digit behind your ear every single time he greets you. as if fixing a flyaway or deliberate as it sends a shiver down your spine, it's the first step before depositing a kiss atop your head. it's benign and heedful, but even an silent gesture can speak volumes when it's received from wing. never a tease, though he can't help the small smile that breaks across his face-plate when he catches the rosy hue to your cheeks in riposte.

how you still find so much energy and love to spare him when your schedule has you all over the place, is beyond him. it's the highest compliment, baffled how it's never a bad time to talk. unaware of the time, once he called at two a.m., and instead of telling him, you'd let him badger you about a difficult situation he was in and was looking for your advice or direction on the topic.

"why didn't you tell me it was so early?" he had pouted, a slumped posture rattling his frame, alongside some guilt. "I had not realized, my apologies." to wing's simultaneous dismay and pleasure, you had delicately laughed, dismissing his apology with the wave of your hand. "I don't mind," you'd answered honestly, meaning every word. "you can call me whenever you'd like, honest."

wing's entire body will freeze if you kiss his digits. he recognizes your touch always, how hardly there it feels beside a mercy and unfamiliar repose. out of the corner of his optics, he catches you gather one of his fingers in both your hands, allowing your guidance to take the lead. kissing his knuckle has him practically humming, a melty mess as all he wants is to return such affections. wing wants to make you feel the way you make him feel, even if physical affection isn't entirely his style. every now and then, he wordlessly tells you just how much he loves you, and thats from the trail of kisses that lead up your neck to ultimately land square on your cheek.

wing listens to every single thing you say, from frustrations mumbled or sleepy nonsense, both neither were meant for anyone to hear. if your discontent was targeted towards work assignment or a particularly difficult task, he'd go out of his way to assist in any way he possibly could. on the other hand, the garbled, exhausted talk is kept to himself, and himself alone. it's clearly something you felt at ease to say, comfortable in his presence even if you don't quite realize you've said it. wing respects you, as well as trusts you, very much so. anything he can do to uphold that, he would display it very clearly and make sure you are well aware that he has your back.

he's likely not overly affectionate, at least physically, but he follows in his s/o's steps regarding that. lots of "is this okay?" or "can I-?". but it's from the both of you, either side afraid of crossing invisible boundaries and not wanting to upset their partner. somewhere along the way, you'd both come to discover just what the other likes, and it isn't very often that you'd stray from that. if he's happy, you are, and vice-versa.

simple chats are a frequent occurrence with wing. he just likes to hear his s/o's voice, talking about everything and nothing at the same time. he isn't quiet, but he's probably not a chatterbox either, a happy medium that meshes well with your own nature. he definitely has an excellent memory, remembering things down to the last detail whether it be anniversaries, where you left something last, or a question you just can't recall the answer to. you're partial to gush and praise him for being so smart, but he always shakes his head no, because you don't even know the half of it. he's more than content to memorize everything because it's extremely important to him, you're extremely important to him.

he's probably one to be away for long periods of time. and perchance your schedule isn't as concrete as you'd like it to be. the time apart isn't exactly easy to navigate, the first year or so together added up to be that you were apart far more than you were together. wing always reminds you the longing is what makes the time together all that more special, as it is meaningful and most certainly not wasted. reoccurring check-ins happen as much as he can spare, and has others looking out for you during this time too. he wants it to work, he's just must find a equal balance to everything all at once. a arduous feat, but not impossible as he's willing to do whatever it takes.
