when people complain about the un and international law being useless... look
I don't think (many) people fundamentally understand what the UN is, what international law is, and what they can and cannot do
the UN and international law in general are... quite imperfect and bureaucratic systems which are heavily politicised but it's like. a better world to be in where they do exist than one where there is not. I like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights! I love the self-determination article in the subsequent human rights treaties and how decolonising countries in the 1940s-1970s played a crucial role in shaping the current system.
international law gives us benchmarks, lines in the sand to point out and articulate why someone something did was illegal without running into the issue of ex post facto law, which was an issue in the nuremberg trials, but I digress.
the UN is not a governing body. it has no independent political power.
international law, at the end of the day, is based on the consent of states. whether you like it or not, international law is a horizontal system.
most people are much more familiar with domestic law which is vertical and has clear enforcement mechanisms. international law, particularly international human rights law, has fucking shit enforcement mechanisms. it's all consent based, it's heavily politicised and it's woefully underfunded. sanctions are terrible. humanitarian interventions often go terribly wrong.
but they give structure, and guidelines, and things for civil society to point at and say: you have fucked up. you have breached xyz treaty article, as seen in abc treaty body decision or general comment.
I guess I'm real tired of people acting like international law and the UN are useless or a net negative. like. there are a lot of issues. but it's more complex than 'good' versus 'bad'.
the power imbalance between countries and the veto power of the security un council in particular are stupid but products of historical reality and compromise. international law is built on compromise.
anyway keep on holding the west accountable for the treaties they helped create and signed. unfortunately the united states is weak and has not ratified as many treaties as it should have but what state has ratified which treaty is publicly available information and so are the treaties.

It's very interesting to me that the mandalorians and the Jedi had like this whole like long long war because of how similar they're cultural beliefs are. Like both are very traditional and most of their time is focused either fighting or centralization of children and they're also both very protective cultures. So its like really weird cuz it's like you would think with these shared cultural beliefs that they would get along and have a very close shared alliance but no they had a fist fight in the parking lot.

Special event to commemorate International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace.
As the world gathers this coming 24 April 2024 not to only commemorate, but also to celebrate the achievements of multilateralism and diplomacy, which has its best representation in the United Nations, humanity, and particularly the peoples of the Global South, suffers from the consequences of a global crisis with multiple dimensions, including, among others, in the climate, food, energy and finance fields, which, coupled with the negative impacts of ongoing wars and protracted conflicts, such as the one in the Gaza Strip, is only keeping us off track from honoring our pledge of leaving no one behind and ensuring the attainment, by 2030, of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Objectives:
This commemorative Special Event aims to gather, among others, the Heads of the Principal Organs of the United Nations, as well as high-level representatives from Member States and Observers to the United Nations to engage in a frank and open discussion on how to strengthen and make truly more inclusive the multilateral system, on how to ensure strict compliance and adherence to the Charter of the United Nations, in both its letter and spirit, and on how to balance the participation of relevant stakeholders in some of the intergovernmental discussions within the framework of the three pillars of the United Nations, while ensuring that the intergovernmental nature of the Organization and the leading and central role of States is preserved.
Concept note -International Day for Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace 2024.
Watch The challenges of multilateralism and diplomacy for the fulfillment of the promise of the UN Charter in a polarized world.

How international law significantly changed its scope and depth over the past decades.
Tumblr media
This chapter introduces the role of international law in development. It explains that international law and the rule of law are the foundations of the international system, where the rules are essential preconditions for lasting peace, security, economic development, and social progress. The sustainable development goals (SDGs) and social and environmental frameworks of key institutions determine the degree of influence international law has within development. The chapter considers how international law significantly changed its scope and depth over the past decades. It clarifies that SDGs are not legally binding, but they are soft laws intended to change behaviours through implementation in policies and activities and increase international trade.

Thinking about my SiFi setting. Random Trivia.
Humans are considered adults at 21, which is the youngest they can enter the Labour Force full-time or pursue specialized education. The expectation is that they focus on education and before then.
The Labour Force is general labour around the station/ship/city, 6 hour work days (generous breaks) 3 days a week (7 day week). The idea is you work one job (Maintenance, Transportation, Engineering, Sanitation, Food, Manufacturing, Warehousing, ect) for a few months at a time, and then rotate to a different one, so you eventually have general knowledge of how most of the generalist jobs around the ship work. Automation is common, but human skill is needed still.
In addition, most people also pick up a side job (1 or 2 days a week, 4 hour shifts), that focus on things like "helping with the elderly" or "helping with after-school activities with kids" or "Community Gardens". This is separate from personal/private hobbies.
...
Specialized jobs would be stuff like Medical, Science, Education, Politics, that stuff. Education takes time and is done more gradually, to ensure understanding.
........
UBI, Food, Housing, Medical, Water, ect, is standard. People work for money to purchase specialized products or guild services.

For people who live in the U.S., November can bring to mind a lot of things, and one of them is Thanksgiving. This can be a complicated holiday because while most people just see it as an excuse to get together with friends and family and pig out, we all know that the story of the "First Thanksgiving" is bullshit.
This November, and for as long as it takes, I'm asking you to keep Native American and Alaska Native rights in mind and to fight for them. ICWA, the Indian Child Welfare Act, is at risk.
This act was created to stop cultural genocide. Until the late 1900s, Native American and Alaska Native children were routinely kidnapped and placed in residential schools and white families, where they faced abuse, forced assimilation, and sometimes murder. ICWA was passed in 1978 to stop this by allowing tribes to control the foster and adoption placement of Native American and Alaska Native children.
However, today, the SCOTUS started hearing arguments in a case that could overturn ICWA. This would not only endanger children and allow cultural genocide, but it would endanger tribal sovereignty since it would deny sovereign tribes the rights over the placement of their own children.
This November, this Thanksgiving, and until ICWA has been upheld, I ask you to stand up for the rights of Native Americans and Alaska Natives.
Spread the word about what is happening. Don't let this get swept under the rug. Post about it. Tell your friends and family.
Sign petitions.
Write to representatives.
Reach out to local tribes to see what you can do to help.
Protest.
And if you can afford to do so, donate to Native American and Alaska Native organizations.
