Once the squealing of antique pipework signaled Sirius's entrance into the shower, Ginny knew she had to make her move. She'd pondered it for days now, wondering how severe a transgression it was to invade someone's privacy in such a manner. She also wondered if she could pull it off without getting caught, and wondered what he’d do if he did catch her. Most of all, she feared what she might find. But for the second time in her life, a diary called to her like a siren song, tugging her heart and her body along.

Barefoot and stealth, Ginny skirted up the stairs to the top floor of Grimmauld Place once again, the sound of running water thankfully aiding her efforts. As long as she heard that, she was safe. She paused for a moment to stare at his name, emblazoned in gold lettering on the door. There was something powerful in a name– his name– the brightest star in the sky written in such faded, stoic lettering on such dark, tattered wood. It represented him, in a way– a once bright light battered and beaten by so many deaths and resurrections that only a haunted, beautiful shell remained.

Ginny shook her head violently. No, she shouldn't think of him like that. It was too intense, too personal. She took a breath and turned the doorknob, her eyes immediately fastening to the bedside table with its single drawer. She'd seen him stash the diary there; hopefully it was in its regular spot. She couldn't waste time looking.

The drawer squealed like the old pipework upon opening. But there it lay, against the backdrop of a Gryffindor red silk scarf, as if it had been laid to rest thoughtfully. Her hand hesitated, like it might burn her fingers. This house was full of dark artifacts, most purged long ago, but some were still locked within glass curios, their properties and possibilities long forgotten.

Sirius wouldn't mess with anything dark , she chided herself. He's a Gryffindor.

So are you, an insistent voice in her head challenged her . Yet you almost lost your life to this very sort of trinket. Are you so willing to do it again?
