generative AI is an existential threat to creative spaces. fandom is a community governed space, so it's crucial that we collectively draw a line in the sand about its use. we must not try to distract from the issue at hand by attempting to deflect or dismiss it as an issue of fandom bullying or ship wars. creators must be transparent about AI use and the only way to enforce this is collectively, as a community, if we want to protect the precious creative space that is fandom.

I really do think looking at bad writing is one of the best ways to learn about writing in general, especially for beginners.
the thing is, writing in general is highly subjective- a good sentence will be good in different ways to different people, or not impress someone at all.
a bad sentence? most people can spot bad sentences easy, especially if it is presented to them as 'here's an example of a bad sentence, let's unpack why.'
bad writing can also be very funny, which I think is again often more engaging than 'here's a work of literary genius go analyze it'. Like here's some bad writing from lightlark3:
The moment it was out of Horus’s grip, his body became bones. The flesh turned to ash. He became a corpse.
it's dumb as hell, but I think could foster a solid discussion when you ask 'why? what is the author intending to say? what about it makes it feel 'clunky'? How would you write the same idea?'

So, without telling us, Microsoft has removed WordPad from our computers. Anything you used to use WordPad for will now open in Microsoft Word.
At the same time, Microsoft have inserted an AI feature called "Copilot" in Microsoft Word which runs automatically unless you turn it off.
I've been using WordPad rather than Word for twenty years because every time they make Word fast enough to be convenient, they stuff it with "features" and slow it down again. I don't need a grammar checker and I can spellcheck well enough without a red wiggly line and I don't want to have to manually turn off the less-than-helpful auto-replacements for when I'm writing a fictional name that happens to have a common misspelling in it. The only thing I ever needed to open anything in Word for was to check the word-count.
But this? This is vastly worse.
I'm looking into a thing called LibreOffice, but it doesn't seem to have a bug-free way to edit documents in Rich Text Format (the one WordPad saves things to).

Deity Jester AU to come later today, for now take this random brainworm I had this morning: MDZS modern AU where Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji get paired up for a school project to their equal dismay. Wei Wuxian tries to use ChatGPT because "oh em gee it's so much easier than having to sit around writing!" but every time he does this, Lan Wangji reads it and goes "no AI." because he's like a human AI detector and can tell that this lifeless slop is not written by a human. It gets to the point where it's taking up more time to try and get AI past Lan Wangji than just writing out his part, so Wei Wuxian finally, begrudgingly caves and writes up his part of the essay. Lan Wangji reads it and is like "this is the most beautiful writing I've ever seen" because it's just wild and fantastical and so obviously a sign of just humanity. Human intellect and thought processes. It may go off the rails at some points (Lan Wangji has the version history pulled up just to be sure that there hasn't been anything added in, and there are many instances of a completely insane paragraph being written only to be entirely deleted because the moral debate of nature versus nurture doesn't actually have anything to do with the historical battle of whenever the fuck), but it is brilliant. Cut to Lan Wangji trying to Pavlov Wei Wuxian into not using AI.

i think a huge collateral issue of widespread ai use is that as a consequence of people trying to pass off gen ai content as not that, and whether that is a school essay or fanart or the fucking news, we have to figure out little ways in which we can tell something wasn't made by a human, and between the discourse around the em dash and weird looking art, i'm starting to see many ways in which it negatively affects the way we interact with online media. people who don't use ai get accused of doing it because they write in a way that sounds a little off, or they have to include typos in their assignments so they aren't accused of anything. i find myself overanalyzing art and i don't think that's fair to artist because i know i have certain biases, i know i'm more likely to assume art i don't like was made by ai and try to prove it somehow, i know beginner artists are more prone to mistakes with blending or anatomy or perspective or consistency and those things get pointed out a lot as evidence of ai, which isn't fair to them at all because they should be allowed to make these mistakes without being accused! anyway this is just something that has been frustrating for me for a number of reasons i won't even get to the topic of realistic looking videos that is a whole nightmare on its own

not to bring tiktok drama on tumblr but like every time a ā€˜scandal’ comes out with one of these ā€˜production companies’ that make fan films i always hope we’re finally gonna discuss how they professionalize something that should be an hobbyist endeavor… and yet every single time i’m disappointed.
#like I know we’ve been talking about it here on tumblr and i remember seeing like one or two videos on tt about it#but other than that creators really don’t seem to be engaging critically with the impact that the very nature of what they’re doing has#and look i truly do love the art that some of the people involved in the project make#like arone is truly one of the most talented cosplayers i know#ethan is an amazing actor and I’ve followed him since before he was even in the marauders#dorian is a great writer and idk the others as well but I’m sure they are all great artists#((naming the just cause i feel like being vague would be worse in this case))#and i do believe they engaged with the project with the best of intentions#without knowing or trying to afford grace on past controversy#and it truly is a horrible predicament to have your work be tainted like that for something you had no control over#but like i do think we should be questioning the very idea of how this fanfilms have been made is inherently a problem#like fanfilms are essentially fanfiction on camera#so as long as a few cosplayers want to get together with their iphones write a script and shoot at the local park I don’t have a problem#but if you are putting in place a product that somehow requires you to fundraise consistently for two years then I have a problem with it#ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE SELLING THE SCRIPT TO DO SO#cause even if that script hadn’t been ai generated#that script is fanfiction and you do. not. sell. fanfiction.#seriously like… do we need to go over our abc again?#like fanart and cosplayers are a bit different in the sense that people sell fanart/do commissions and they can be professional cosplayers#but for any other fanmade project that requires you to put pen to paper (or keyboard to chatgpt ig)#you need to be engaging with several ethical questions regarding any exchange of money#and personally i don’t think that there’s been engagement with those ethical reflections#and this isn’t about any of the people involved and not even about mischief productions specifically#it’s about a wider issue in how we have been collectively normalizing a way of doing things that should not be normal#and like yes star using ai and being overall not good is bad but like can we talk about EVERYTHING ELSE please

i think one of the best approaches to ai in classrooms debate is to get rid of bullshit work generative ai can do and just write assignments that can't be answered well w/ chatgpt but unfortunately quite a lot of school is built on bullshit work. also to be more forgiving generally
