I'm sorry but the only reason klaroline ever got so much popularity and their huge fan base was because the fans used Caroline as a self insert: she's the stereotype of a teenager girl, a gorgeous blonde vampire who's insecure and is always put second aka what every teen has been in one point of their lives.

That's why other Klaus’s ships, such as klayley, klamille, klaurora and especially klonnie, didn't get the hype and love klaroline did. These women were all adults or young adults when they were introduced (except Bonnie of course) and the people didn't like them at all at first. I mean, the hatred towards Camille, Hayley and Aurora when The Originals was streaming was crazy and this has reduced a little, but still remains.

I'm aware that even if klaroline hadn't happened, klonnie wouldn't have gotten half the support that Klaus and Caroline have. Of course it wouldn't, why would they care about a poc romance? Bonnie wasn't ignored only by the show itself, but by the fans and this shows. I mean, even klena (Klaus x Elena) gets more love than them and while I don't hate this pairing, it just proves that writers will never put their favorite white person with a black woman.

After the Fire, But Before the Flood by @livlepretre

Fairytale Ending is pretty well known already by this writer so I wont' recommend that (even though I'm absolutely recommending that). Fairytale Ending is to The Shining as After the Fire But Before the Flood is to The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon in my mind (makes sense if you are also a Stephen King fan). Everyone knows the former and I also think the latter deserves more love.

After the Fire is stripped bare and raw look into how Klaus and Elena's relationship would unfold in a last man standing situation and how it evolves (or devolves) into this gloriously symbiotic relationship in a post-apocalyptic world.

All Your Closets of Backlogged Dreams by IJustWoundYou

An inventive combination of canon story and string theory, seeing the doppelganger universe expanded beyond borders of space and time. What really shines to me in this story is how the writer deepens Elena's relationship not only with herself but with the women who came before her. Being such an introspective character already, that really stands out here.

A beautifully atmospheric gothic tale of a twisted romance that takes place during the early 1900s. Full of intrigue, shock, and horror. The writer really excels at conveying tone and mood and staying within the confines of the setting. In the 1900s, a touch is a scandal and the pace of that really churns into a momentum that makes you nervous and excited for what the characters will get up to in the modern world.

And the one I've written for Klena that I'm most proud of....Throne of Blood. The planning and intention of it all. That people can see the delineation between what I've come to consider as "seasons" for the fic really pleases me.

I never thought about it before, but now that the idea is in front of me, I think Klena would have been absolutely WILD had it happened, and it would have made a lot sense for Klaus's character. He's been waiting for a thousand years to break this curse, and suddenly Elena comes, and easily gives him everything he's wanted, she doesn’t die like Tatia, she doesn’t run like Katherine, and she's also the key to making his hybrids. I also think Elena could have been a compelling character had the writers treated her as one. She is smart, she has daggersd two Originals after all, I think she could have empowered Klaus in ways that others maybe couldn't, because he can't kill her since he needs her, and while she's physically not strong, she can be pretty manipulative sometimes. It would have been INSANE if they had a thing, they would have been absolutely toxic but a great dynamic for a show like the vampire diaries.

I like toxic ships, I won't lie, but only if they're well executed, have a solid reason as to why the people dating even got interested in each other (this is why I like klaurora and enjoy the dynamic delena has, but don't like klaroline or bonkai) and I do feel Elena and Klaus would fall into this category. They had potential for a relationship, just not a healthy one.

Don't bring up that it would be ooc for Elena to fall in love with Klaus after he murdered Jenna: she's married to Damon, who raped her best friend and who literally killed her brother, so let's skip this unneeded discussion, because tvdu writers are always retconning their characters for ships/the narrative. I've talked and recommended her fanfic a thousand times, but Fairytale Ending by @livlepretre really, really touches what I think would be canon klena. They're toxic, screwed up and yet they love each other in their own fucked up way. It's so good written too, and it makes Klaus look even more fucked up than in canon which I just love.

Despite how tvd made her look, Elena is clever and resourceful and she also looks like Tatia, who was Klaus’s first heartbreak, and knowing how obsessive and screwed up he is with the women he loves romantically it's strange he didn't try to do anything physical or romantic with her. Just imagine Klaus and Elijah repeating history with Elena by falling in love with her, just because she shares the face of the two women they both wanted at one point. It would be so twisted yet such an interesting dynamic to watch, at least for me.

It obviously wouldn't be healthy, but it would be so ironic to have Klaus falling for the girl he's supposed to kill. If they had met in different circumstances, then maybe they wouldn't be as toxic, but I do get the appeal of klena and why people ship them.

And personally, ships where the other person stresses the fuck out of Klaus will always be my favorite.

Chapter 3 - Sweet Fix of a Daydream

Whisking away his wife from the party left it in a satisfying chorus of heckles. It’s not enough that he took her from them, but he thoroughly enjoyed the notion that it cut the rest of them somehow.

She didn’t say much when they arrive to the looming dark halls of his estate. Not of the imposing size or the grand design of it all. Guided her through a brief tour in silence. She didn’t seem interested in anything except the library. A stately collection with high ceilings, enough to accommodate a twisting candelabra. Her fingers brushed against his heavy oak furniture and he never before wished more to be a tree so that he might be chopped down to make a chair.
