When Peter’s double-cross of Kate turns into a triple-cross, the pack is left with de-aged Hale on their hands again. Teenage Derek had been weird enough, but teenager Peter is a damn nightmare.

For one, what are they supposed to do with him? This version of Peter wasn’t the one who tried to kill them all. It wouldn’t be right to hold him responsible for actions he hasn’t committed yet, would it?

And for another - and this one is a much more pressing issue - he won’t stop flirting with Stiles.

A Peter Hale character study fic for @teenwolflegacy​ Top Dogs week, day 1

The stairs down to the old servants’ entrance squeaked horrendously in the middle, but Peter had learned that he could press the sides of his feet against the walls, where the support was strongest, and slowly creep downward without making a sound. It was a narrow little passageway, windowless, which once carried maids and butlers from the servants’ quarters on the third floor down to the study on the first. Secret stairs and hidden passageways, all meant to ensure that the help was neither seen nor heard, as much as possible.

In what was perhaps a fit of youthful melodrama, Peter found it dreadfully appropriate that they had put his bedroom on the third floor. His parents, he thought, liked him the way the manor’s previous owners had liked their servants: out of sight, out of mind.

He stopped on the fifth step from the bottom – the one that didn’t squeak at all – and quietly sat himself on it. Peter had to strain to hear through the bookcase that covered the passageway, which was good. It meant someone in the room would have to strain to hear his heartbeat as he listened in.

“Now Gianna is making claims on Deucalion’s territory,” said a rough, bass voice. Peter’s Uncle Ambrose. “It’s outrageous. After everything Ambrose Ward did for her.”

“That territory has belonged to the Ward pack for a century,” said an older woman. Peter’s great aunt, Maxine. “She becomes an alpha through bloodshed, and now she thinks she can come home and take the land from its rightful heir?”

After a pause, his mother spoke in her soft yet somehow imposing tone. Talia said she spoke quietly so that people had to work harder to listen, which caused them to assign more importance to her words than they might otherwise. “What do you think, Talia?” she asked.

They’d been doing this lately, both of their parents. Posing tactical questions to their eldest, preparing and assessing her for when she would someday become alpha. Read the rest on AO3

You know what about this scene sticks out to me the most? It’s not the hallucination itself, as heartbreaking as that is, but the glance. that little glance there. as the daughter of two alcoholic parents, that glance is painfully familiar.

it’s “oh god, he’s gonna do this here?”

it’s “please don’t make a scene”

it’s “don’t do this to me again”

what Noah is saying hurts, obviously. it’s the cruelest thing he could possibly say. but it hurts more because there are witnesses. now it’s a public spectacle. and you know what? Stiles doesn’t actually look surprised by this. he stands still and accepts it, with that one shameful little glance around to see how many people are bearing witness to it, and that makes me feel like something at least vaguely like this has happened before.

having an alcoholic parent is managing public perception. it’s running interference until you can get them out of the way. it’s doing damage control afterward, cleaning up after them, smoothing any feathers ruffled by loose lips and lowered inhibitions. making excuses, excuses, excuses.

we don’t know how deep Noah got into his cups or for how long. we don’t know how bad it got. it couldn’t have been too bad, we figure, if he kept hold of his job and even managed a promotion to Sheriff. he never crossed any obvious lines that would make people look closer or threaten his custody of his son. but there are obvious signs of parentification in Stiles, of having had to take on more adult responsibility than he should’ve at that age.

i think this is one of them.

day 6: Psych AU

Stiles is not psychic.

He does, however, have exceptionally keen observational skills, a banshee business partner who predicts death, and a werewolf best friend with superhuman senses. Put those together and the three of them have solved crimes the police didn’t even know had taken place! The problem being that, according to the general public, banshees and werewolves don’t exist, and neither Lydia nor Scott is keen to disabuse them of the notion.

Stiles’ solution to this problem is unorthodox, to say the least. He didn’t exactly ask them before going forward with it, but when a baffled detective stared Lydia down and squawked “What are you, psychic or something?”, how else was Stiles supposed to respond?

"Don't be ridiculous!” he’d said, much to Lydia’s relief. “...I’m the psychic.”

According to Stiles, it’s the perfect scheme! Lydia predicts the crimes, Scott picks up the trace evidence, Stiles puts the pieces together and wraps it all up in a big, melodramatic bow that keeps the spotlight firmly on him and not his friends. They get to save lives and get paid. And, best of all, it is definitely never boring.
