1. The thing that got you hooked on hockey

STORY TIME: i moved to canada, just outside of Hockey Capital (Toronto) when I was 9 years old (am 23 rn). so you'd think that i'd have been into hockey since i moved, right, considering that i was surrounded by leafs fans and like a good chunk of guys in my classes growing up were hockey boys?

DEAD WRONG.

all the guys ever cared about are the stats. so i wasn't too too interested in hockey. but i somehow absorb a lil too much info about hockey and the leafs in general but i never got /into/ the sport until my best friend lucy got into hockey like in february/march 2023. the irony is that lucy is from the uk and that's who got me into hockey: not any of the hockey boys I grew up having a crush on (bold of my family and friends to assume i got into hockey to impress a guy lol), not any of the hockey boys I went to high school with and was on good terms with. but my British friend (she’s a real one for it). And Tbf it’s because she talked more about the vibes first before she went into talking about the stats. im not a math person so the stats were like flying over my head. but she sends me videos of their interviews and game highlights and talks about them and i'm like... aight okay let me give this hockey thing a chance.

2. Your first ever fandom friend

definitely lucy (@ draisaitleons) like... she introduced me to the sport, so she's my first ever fandom friend on here.

3. The jersey you would most like to own

ngl i've been eyeing the hischier premier heritage jersey... either that or the black and white jersey one, though i'm leaning more towards the first one.

4. YOUR player (you only get ONE so choose wisely)

who else but nico hischier? tbh i can't even remember how i first heard about him. but i swear it must be all the gif sets i kept seeing when i started following more and more hockey blogs around april/may 2023? then i watched a few of his interviews and was endeared; thought he was cute and a good captain. but what REALLY sold me was when i found out that his birthday is on january 4, which is two days before mine. i was like "oh cool, a fellow capricorn" bc at that point, i'm pretty sure all the hockey players i keep seeing on my dash had birthdays in april and may, so to see a capricorn hockey player i was like... okay okay. so that's also the story behind my tag for him which is "my cap(tain) and fellow cap(ricorn) <3" if anyone was ever curious. then i read up on him; found out he was drafted first overall in 2017 and i just really liked his vibes as a captain and a player, and decided "yep, that's my guy".

5. A pairing that deserves more fic

ooh this is hard but ngl... kailer yamamoto x connor mcdavid. HEAR ME OUT: yes, i know yamo is no longer with the oilers (rip but he seems happier and less stressed out in seattle, so go have fun, king <3) but when i discovered this pairing when i was reading rpf, i was confused at first but i was VIBING! there was this fic i read on ao3 and it hasn't been updated but the premise was that kailer was a single dad, but no one on the team knows except for like one other person. and connor only finds out that kailer's got a kid when he goes into kailer's apartment to drag him to a team bonding. oof, can't wait to read more tbh. but the fic that really sold me on the pairing was connor having a crush on kailer, who had no idea connor was into men (he thought connor and lauren were dating, when they were really just besties) and i was HERE FOR IT.

tl;dr: kailer x connor will be my rarepair that needs more fics.

6. Your favourite on-ice moment

has to be when jack tackles aho back during the playoffs. this lived rent-free in my brain and i was like.... huh... maybe i should check out the new jersey devils if they got a guy who tackles people like this.

ever since the proposal things have gotten difficult. thomas always on you like a fucking hawk, never allowing you to breathe. you were up to your whits with him, you understood why he did what he did. yet you are your own person. he knew this too.

so why did he treat you like property?

“imma’ kill em’, pol.” sitting beside pol at her home. needing to get away, get some advice.

“ah, for fuck sake. lovers quarrel already?” she huffed out her own smoke. you roll your eyes.

“of course there will be quarrel, its tommy. i just dont like the possessiveness, im not fuckin’ weak.”

she laughs, “men want to feel power. they want to feel like an alpha, that’s tommy’s way of showing he loves ya’.”

you bit your lip, “oh please.” her eyes widen slightly, pol sets her cup down.

you stand up quickly, pacing back and forth the room. “i will take his name, i will take his love. but i will not take the force he feels to give. the power he so wants will come from elsewhere. im a smart fuckin’ women and i will be damned if he thinks i’ll be anything less.”

without letting polly reply you storm out her house, headed straight for the new shared home you have with tom. the walk just added fuel to your anger, angrier with every step.

you storm inside the home, tommy looking up quickly as the door slams. his eyebrows furrow, “did ya’ not here me when i said i’d pick ya’ up?”

that was the last straw, the gun tucked in your bag was pulled out now at tommy. “i am your wife!” you yelled. he sits back in amusement, you clench your jaw.

you stepped closer to him, putting the gun in front of his face.

“i am now y/n shelby, so that means i can do whatever the fuck i want whenever i want, remember those words tommy?” you growled.

“i do.” he mutters staring at you with a certain look.

“then you will protect me but while i do as i wish. i am too fuckin’ grown to have you tell me what i shall do! understood?” he pushes the gun away, stepping up.

you stand back, head held high though. “you’re worse than fuckin’ ada.” he mutters before grabbing your face connecting your lips.

you pull away, “i mean it tom, i am your equal. nothing less.”

he stares deeply into your eyes, “you are my queen.”

you roll your eyes as you feel him scoop you up, a soft giggle escapes you as he carries you to the room you both shared.

you walked the streets with a new self gained power, you helped tommy with the business. your wedding was closer than ever, accepting thomas wish for it being in gypsie style.

you were suppose to meet with ada and pol at the some address that worked under the business. a gypsie dress maker.

you fumble inside your bag, pulling out a smoke as you glance around you. more cautious now than ever, you notice a man who appeared from london. you knew this because the trip you and tommy took.

london style men were different than small health men. london was nice but posh, and you had a different idea of things in your mind. things you voiced often to tommy.

who actually took some of your advice and ideas, eventually allowing you both being equals. in a way, for you knew he had to play his role; and you with yours. you just weren’t gonna be some stay at home mother who got cheated on, too smart for that.

you enter the building, ignoring the mans eyes on you. ada jumped up excitedly, “oh me god, finally gonna have a real sista’.” she beamed.

pol smiles at me with a true gleam, “i don’t like many, but you’ve proven yourself. you truly were made to be a shelby.” at her words you smack her arm playfully.

“you two stop, or imma’ cry.” you giggle softly, before looking them both seriously.

“i lost my family, i have no one to attend on my behalf... so thank you for the warm welcome. as ada ya’ truly a sister to me, and pol... a mother i needed.” the confession shocked the two gals, them all having their quick moment before it was dress time.

you ended up finding the perfect styled dress, glam but not too much. something that really felt like the new you. pol paid the lady and we all decided to head to the new garrison, who is owned by aurthur now.

we all sat a table, drinks being brought our way immediately. “well, ladies... toast to findin’ a fuckin’ dress.” you raise your glass with a giggle, throwing it back. already refilling your glass the girls stare at you in a way.

“do not! it’s a good day, my loves.” you threw back the second glass. lizzie made her way over to the table.

“congrats, y/n. for you have won the raffle.” the sarcasm seeps off her lips as ada and pol exchange glances with each other.

with the two drinks in you, burning your inside rage. you gave the women a wicked smile, “that means a lot lizzie, comin’ from someone who bought every fuckin’ ticket.”

she stuttered a bit before turning and walking off, the girls beside you eyes wide with amusement. “damn, darlin’. you really are a shelby.”

thomas and the boys enter, eyes glue onto yours. you wink at the man who held your gaze, as you refill for the third time. they made their way over esme joining who john recently married.

“hello, esme.” you call out softly, trying to help her feel welcome as well. tom pulls a chair besides you, arm resting across your shoulders softly.

“today went well.” you hummed quietly to the man, a soft smile made way on his face.

“im happy for ya’ love, gonna look beautiful.” you give him a soft kiss before turning towards his ear. “gonna look good with ya’ takin’ it off, of me.”

you lean back with a smirk, joining the conversation as if such things weren’t just spoken. tommy shifts himself softly, and allows his hand to settle on your thigh.

“ya’ got a smoke?” you ask tommy with a glint in your eyes, already slipping your hand into his coat pulling them out. you place one in-between your lips, leaning forward waiting for the man to light it for you.

he smirks lighting it for you before giving you a warning squeeze on your thigh. you exhale the smoke, finishing your glass.

that night tommy took you home, and did his way with you. leaving you alone though the next morning, due to some business he had to take care of.

you didn’t feel so great as you did yesterday, the whole reason you drank so much was to forget that you had no one. no friends nor family, only the blinders. which you loved very much but still, the death of your parents and the death from war still scarred you.

you and tommy helped each other, with the nightmares, the thoughts...but sometimes no one could do anything for what you only deal with inside your mind.

you eventually get out of the bed, taking a nice warm bath relaxing. trying to escape the stress that tries to invade your mind.

it was one week to this day, tommy and you get married. you weren’t bridezilla over everything, more letting ada and pol take charge.

tom was on his way back home from work, so when the door opened you didn’t question the fact it was so quick. a scream was heard from one of the maids, along with a gunshot.

the flight or fight kicks in as you grab your gun, closing your bedroom door softly. you grab two daggers and clutch them close as you hide in the room.

“she’s here somewhere. go! look!” a voice boomed confirming it would be more than one man. footsteps echoed the whole house, you begging to any god above for tommy to be back in enough time.

footsteps approach the room, door flying open. a man in a suit, the man from the other day! without making a sound, the dagger leaves your hand somehow perfectly hitting him in the throat. you rush forward, grabbing the fallen gun. pushing the door closed softly with your foot.

hand on his mouth to cover up his choking sounds. you stare in horror at the site and how you managed to do this. where was this girl in the alleyway? no this is the girl from the war.

after he finally died, you fall back quickly hiding your dagger and grabbing both guns. you press your ear against the door, it sounded as if there was two or three more men out there.

you quickly, pull the body into the bathroom quietly. so the blood wouldn’t leak. “where is dahmer?” a voice spoke making you freeze.

you hurry back to the spot in the corner of the room, gun aimed at the door. “go check downstairs, you with me!” someone ordered.

you clench your jaw, ready to pull the trigger at anyone who entered the door. just as the footsteps reach the door, gunshots went off downstairs.

“tommy.” you sigh in relief, but it was interrupted as a man bust through the door. you instantly shot him, the bullet landing in his shoulder. you try to dodge his aim, firing once more at him as he does the same.

his body hits the floor, then another gun shot rang off before steps echoes the house. “y/n!”

his voice was hoarse and scared, “i-im here, tommy.” you call out just as your legs give out.

“oh my god.” he rushes forward, you allow him to pull you close.

“it’s not mi-mine...” you point at the two men behind tommy. who looked at you with so much awe but it quickly went away when you winced.

he quickly scans you, seeing blood was actually dripping from you. down your leg, you were shot.

“i didn’t fe- i- oh tommy.” your eyes widened, you didn’t realize the last bullet hit you but you were losing a lot of blood.

“a belt tom, give me a belt.” he quickly rips his off himself, you take it tying it tight above the wound.

“we gotta get you to the hospital.” he scoops you up in no time, dodging any dead bodies. rushing to get you to the hospital.

he was not about to lose the love of his life one week before marrying her.

“tom, i got-gotta tell ya’ something.” you breathe out, the pain finally coming to you.

“you are my lov- lover. i am so deeply inlove wi-with you.” you choke out as tom glares at you through the mirror.

“don’t say that fuckin’ shit! ya’ gonna be just fine.” he grits through his teeth, a whimper leaves you when the car jerks your leg.

“im serious, tommy. i need to kn- know, that yo-” he cuts you off.

“of course, i fucking love ya’ that’s why you won’t fuckin’ die. so shutup back there with that shit!” he snaps but grows worried when he doesn’t hear a response.

“y/n?”

while you were being patched up, finally awake you noticed how the nurses watch and touch you carefully.

“alright,” you wince sitting up more. “the fuck is no one telling me?” for you knew since tommy wasn’t in the room with you something serious was being withheld.

the ladies exchange a look, “i don’t give a fuck! ya’ will tell me what it is!” you yelled out, making the ladies jump. making you feel awful.

“um...” a smaller gal standing in the corner spoke up, earning a glare from a older women. “mrs.shelby, you are with child.”

you felt the air leave your lungs, “leave.” you mutter out.

“but mam, im not fini-” you glare at the older lady. “i said fuckin’ leave!”

everyone goes to leave but you stop the gal who told you the truth. “stay.” her eyes widen but she obeys.

you felt tears spill down your cheek, “who else knows this information?“

she takes over the older lady’s job, finishing my stitches quietly. “your husband, madam.”

your hands found a glass beside you, chucking it at the wall. “fuck!” you scream with your entire heart. the gal shook at the outburst but finishes with your leg.

“i know i have no room to speak, mrs.shelby; but i believe you’ll be a great mother.” the words suck your heart and the sobs erupt from you.

you grip her hand, her eyes softening at your state. “oh god, plea-please dont tell anyone else.” you begged.

she shook your head, “i wont! beside’s your different than the other blinders, you are respectable.” with that she leaves the room, leaving you to gather your thoughts at the idea of being a mother... the fact your mrs.shelby and haven’t even gotten married.

“the fuck is goin’ on?” you mutter to yourself

did you watch lucifer season six and what are your thoughts pls and ty

Ahaha. Yes. Yes I did watch it. Then I cried for a literal hour and attempted to compose myself, only to start crying again when I lay down and kept on thinking about it. Then I had more feelings. Then I slept like the dead due to emotional trauma. Then I reblogged gifsets and had More feelings. Then @buffaluff and @flynnanimal watched it and also required emotional support due to drowning in their own tears. So, uh... we're all fine here now. How are you?

My main takeaway from the final season was the sheer amount of love for the characters, story, and fans that you could feel shining through all the episodes, and which made SUCH a refreshing change. I had feelings in my tags the other day about how a show about the devil was constantly goofy, hopeful, loving, and uplifting, rather than all the grimdark nonsense they could have easily done with it. (As I said, just imagine it as written by the GOT idiots?? NO THANK YOU.) The writing really loved everyone and wanted to give them a proper ending and emotional journey, and it wanted to show the fans that they weren't stupid for having invested six seasons of effort and emotion into this, and just... that is so much rarer than it should be? Compare all the movies and TV shows that treat their fans like the enemy, that want to outsmart them at all costs even if it means changing major plot elements, that ferociously guard spoilers and think that "shock value" means good writing, by throwing hackneyed cliche upon cliche and making everything Depressing, and just... Lucifer had its hiccups and slow points and missteps, of course, but I am SO glad they didn't do that. The entire show consisted of Lucifer slowly but steadily progressing toward being a better man, despite mistakes and setbacks and sometimes a little too much will-they-won't-they. (Season 3 was the only one where I got bored and skipped over the filler episodes with Pierce/Lucifer/Chloe in order to get to the end).

That is an essentially simple premise, but they stuck to it, and they didn't try to create more drama by randomly wrecking what they had already established. I wrote a fic all the way back in mid-season 2 (In Nomine Patris) that ended up predicting quite a few of the future characters who had not yet appeared on the show at that time, including Eve, Michael, and Azrael, and several plot points, including the very major one of Lucifer returning to hell for the sake of his daughter with Chloe. And while this might mean that I am just that good at guessing TV shows (I would like to think this....) it also means that the writers set expectations, followed through on those expectations, and didn't suddenly derail everything or turn it totally on its head just for the sake of cheap shocks. As we can all attest, they certainly caused PLENTY of drama, anguish, pain, and suffering, but they did it in a way that remained faithful to the overall premises of the story and the characters, and wanted to see them become the best versions of themselves. I cried my eyes out at the end and then thought, "hey, I might want to watch the whole series again," which, if you ask me, is the mark of doing your job right. There have been so few TV endings recently where I didn't immediately swear off the whole thing or have to pretend that canon didn't exist, so yeah.

As I said, it was just refreshing to watch something that had that essential deep generosity at its core, where the message is that everyone is worthy of love if they make the hard and painful effort to change and become better, and that even if earthly things feel small next to all this messy celestial drama, they still matter, and that you are loved no matter what. I loved that Amenadiel became God and Lucifer returned to hell as a choice in order to help all the trapped souls be able to work through their guilt and go to heaven. There were obviously certain echoes of The Good Place in that ending; I don't know if it was something they had planned all along or if the success of TGP, another series asking deep questions about life, death, morality, and human nature within the framework of a goofy heaven-and-hell sitcom, influenced it, but either way, it worked so well. Even if it tore my heart out and stomped on it on the ground, it was fitting and oh so lovely to see Lucifer, once the most selfish being in the entire universe, following in Linda's footsteps and becoming selflessly dedicated to helping other people. Just. Chef's kiss.

And of course, Deckerstar. The Hades and Persephone vibes were IMMACULATE this season, and while it did take Lucifer and Chloe the best part of four seasons to get together, they never significantly backslid, never had third-party issues or cheap cheating storylines once they were officially a couple, and Tom Ellis and Lauren German REALLY killed it this season in particular. It was never easy for them and sometimes the drama went on a little too long over the course of said six seasons, but the love story was beautiful and incredibly meaningful and always true to the fact that the actors and characters and writers (not to mention the fans) all loved it so much. They were so much the emotional heart of this, and when they went to hell together in episode 6x03 (where they turned into cartoons because wHAT even IS this show), Joe Henderson said in an interview that this was to give the fans a view into Lucifer and Chloe's future (after) lives post-6x10, and to offer them a basis to write fanfiction. I mean... the showrunner saying to the fans "here, we love you, have something to write fic about!" is likewise pretty shockingly rare. It's again an example of how this show always audaciously poked fun at itself, never took itself TOO seriously, and was always welcoming its fans and the people who loved it to do so, rather than making them feel stupid or taking joy in wrecking beloved characters or plots.

Obviously, I loved Rory, the badass lesbian half-angel goth Deckerstar child straight out of My Immortal (seriously, she was SO edgy, it was amazing), because of the fact that Lucifer's entire arc was always about feeling abandoned by his father and that he was going to have to face it for himself. Dorky Devil Dad Lucifer trying his absolute HARDEST to bond with his daughter was simultaneously hilarious, adorable, and heart-wrenching, and yet again, the Growth. We all remember when he could barely tolerate Trixie touching him, and now we're here. Also, any variation whatsoever of "this is just a brief moment of time that we must be apart, love is eternal and stronger than death and we will never really leave each other" as a line is guaranteed to make me bawl my eyes out. So that was fun.

I got a big kick out of Ghost Dan running around and trying to get everyone to see him, and had feelings about seeing him in heaven with Charlotte and his beloved Pudding Pops at the end. I had feelings about how they handled Ella finding out the truth (or rather demanding to know why nobody had told her) and of course, I obviously loved Maze and Eve and their goth/femme wedding and the fact that they got a good three-season romantic arc (indeed, I wanted more of them). My god, Trixie is SO BIG, she used to be a tiny little nugget. I love that Linda was the moral and emotional rock all along, from the first episode to the very last, and that Amenadiel was Deeply Vindicated when Charlie's wings appeared at his first birthday party. I love how Lucifer in s6 is absolute thousands of light years from Lucifer in s1. And as ever, Chloe was Perfect. I am happy that I spent six seasons with these characters and saw them become better, and that I was never made to feel like an idiot for trusting the writers to end everything in a beautiful and emotional way. Because, well. They did. Sure, maybe I could go back and pick at a plotline here or a detail there, but I don't terribly feel the need to do so? It might not have been perfect, but it was perfect, and I am so grateful that it existed.

did you reach your reading goal for the year (if you had one)?

I didn’t have a reading goal - I never do - but I still read less than I wanted, i.e. 43 books. granted, one of these books was Moby Dick, and that took me two months, but I had nothing but free time from March to July and I wish I had read more then.

what are your top 3 books you read this year?

Herman Melville, Moby Dick. When I was reading it, I felt everything in my mind slow down to match the pace of the plot and the syntax.

John le Carré, The Little Drummer Girl. Charlie is a brilliantly drawn character, and I’m impressed by Le Carré’s capacity to inject drama into the most mundane logistical matters.

Viet Thanh Nguyen, The Committed. It was criticised as too overtly poltical or overintellectual, but if a novel is an account of a character’s mind, and this character reads colonial theory to use it as a tool for engaging with the world, why pretend that he doesn’t?

what’s a book that you didn’t expect to enjoy quite so much going in?

Kurt Vonnegut, The Sirens of Titan. I read several Vonnegut novels last winter, and my general impression was that I would have enjoyed them much more if I had read them at a younger age but this one got to me, not only because it features an alien-robot tragically in love with a human.

were there any books that didn’t live up to your expectations?

Lauren Groff, The Matrix, the celebrated Marie de France novel. I read only 25 pages, and I was very annoyed throughout. The author shows no real interest in the period, its people, or the main character - beyond the version she made up in her head, which serves her mostly to express anachronistic frustration with organised religion. The prose is either unremarkable or bad; the details of the physical world are brought up only because the author seems to believe that good writing should be ‘specific’ and ‘textured.’ What finally made me give up on the novel was the idea that Marie wrote all her lais as a love-sick teenager, which feel preposterous. I know nothing about her, but the texts read as a work of a much more mature and good-humoured writer than Groff’s character. (It is possible that in the 120 pages I have not read Marie rewrites the first draft into a version we have received but this is not enough to make me finish the book).

If someone wants to read a good medieval historical novel which engages with a major literary work from the period, I recommend James Meek’s To Calais, In Ordinary Time, which is about The Romance of the Rose, Black Death, and historically accurate fun with gender (think As You Like It).

I reread books very rarely, because I am always anxious to read the books I haven’t read even once.

did you dnf any books?

The Matrix, and Simon Schama’s massive volume on Dutch art, The Embarrassment of Riches. The title puts his argument more successfully than the book itself, which is too long and still fails to discuss Dutch colonialism - a topic certainly relevant to a study of the tension between strict morality and the accumulation of wealth.

did you read any books outside your usual preferred genre(s)?

I don’t think I have a preferred genre, but the two genres I read only this year were spy fiction (le Carré) and fantasy (R.F. Kuang’s Poppy Wars). I also read more books in Polish (all five of them), which were all interesting in their ways, but difficult to read, as I am much more used to reading in English.

what was your predominant format this year?

Ebook, as always, but I read more paper books than previously. I started reading Moby Dick on my kindle back in the first lockdown, but when I was returning to it this year I bought the beautiful cloth-bound Vintage classics edition (it was a birthday present).

what’s the longest book you read this year?

...how many times I can answer with Moby Dick? The Poppy War trilogy felt like a single book; it was more or less 1500 pages long and I read that in a single week.

what are your top 3 anticipated 2022 releases?

R.F. Kuang, Babel - “a thematic response to The Secret History and a tonal response to Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell — grapples with student revolutions, colonial resistance, and the use of translation as a tool of empire.” I am looking forward to forgetting about the world for seventy something hours this will take to read. I follow Kuang on twitter, so I took note of this when she announced it last summer. (The other two novels are from Guardian’s 2022 list of books to anticipate which I read yesterday).

Ottessa Moshfegh, Lapvona - “Murder, cannibalism, occult forces: a pitch-black take on fairytales set in a medieval fiefdom from the author of My Year of Rest and Relaxation.” Hopefuly it will be better than The Matrix.

Elif Batuman, Either/Or - “Batuman’s latest comic novel sees her heroine dive into student life at Harvard and trace her roots in Turkey.” I need to stop reading campus novels, but I like Batuman, so I will give it a go.

what books from your tbr did you not get to this year, but are excited to read in 2022?

So many. I am currently in the middle of Arundhati Roy’s The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, which I first picked up soon after it came out (in the first year of my undergrad), when I was frankly too stupid for it. I am slightly less stupid now, so it’s going better - she’s a great writer, and she has things to write about. I am also in the process of reading Peter Brown’s The Rise of Western Christendom and Terry Eagleton’s Literary Theory; I read very little of Brown every day, and chunks of Eagleton on the weekends. A book I haven’t even started, but intend to read this year is the latest volume of Foucault's History of Sexuality, Confessions of the Flesh, finally out in English. It is very relevant to my interests.
