You Will Be Found | Javy "Coyote" Machado

Summary: An emergency situation leads you to spend a few days with Coyote. (Basically an "if he wanted to, he would")

Pairing: Javy "Coyote" Machado x f!reader (no use of Y/N)

Content warnings: Mentions of suicide (no detail of how it happened), angst with somewhat of a happy ending, Jake is an asshole and gets put in his place, jealous!Jake. Although there is no smut, this is strictly for 18+ because of the subject matter.

A/N: I lost a friend to suicide almost two years ago to the date, and it's not something that I talk about often. I didn't plan on my first Coyote imagine being this dark, but it's meaningful to me. That being said, if you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts, please seek help and dial 9-8-8 if you live in the US. It's the number for the suicide hotline, and it can be texted.

The night had been in full swing. Jake invited you to The Hard Deck with his friends, and it was an invite that you glady accepted. You hadn’t been together for very long - two months, three at the most. Rock Of Ages by Def Leppard played on the jukebox as you showed the Dagger Squad pictures of your eight-week-old niece.

“Um, Kasey’s calling you,” Bradley said. You frowned as you looked at your phone and saw her name and picture come across the screen. 

“I gotta take this,” you said. You made your way outside and leaned against the hood of Jake’s car before answering the call.

“Hey, is everything okay? It’s gotta be what, two, three in the morning over there?”

“You remember Tyler, right?” She sounded upset, like she had been crying and was trying to talk in between sobs.

“Yeah, we talked a few weeks ago about what he had planned for his birthday. You’re starting to worry me. What’s going on?”

“Uh, I don’t really know how to… Annie hadn’t heard from him for a few days so she went with Kyle to check on him. He left a note and I wanted you to hear it from us before you saw the posts.”

It couldn’t be. All of you had been friends since high school, and Tyler was always the most optimistic out of everyone. You talked to Kasey for a few minutes before you figured that it Jake and his friends were getting worried by your sudden disappearance. Wiping your tears,you went back inside. Jake was playing pool with Payback and Fanboy, so it was kind of difficult to get his attention.

“I need to talk to you for a few minutes outside,” you said. Jake nodded his head and passed the pool cue to Rooster before following you outside. As you told him everything that you knew about what had just happened, he pulled you in for a hug.

“I told Kasey that I would be on the first flight out tomorrow. I don’t really know when I’ll be back.”

Jake sighed and rubbed your back. He didn’t know your friends, but it was still a shock to hear that you lost someone that you spoke so highly of. 

“Look, I’m really sorry that this is happening. I really am. But I can’t go with you. I’ve got this deployment in a week that I have to get ready for but will you text me while you’re back in Philly?”

“Yeah.”

The two of you went back inside and Jake closed his tab before he went over to talk to Javy. You talked to Bob and Rooster about what was going on and why you had to leave early.

“Man, you’re lucky that Phoenix is out sick. If you can’t go with her, at least let me, okay? You know it wouldn’t be a good idea if you just left her alone.”

“Yeah, okay. But only if she’s okay with it. And don’t do anything stupid.”

Jake was the one who drove you to The Hard Deck, and he was the one to take you home. But he didn’t leave until Javy got there with a packed bag. They asked you if he could stay and take Jake’s place for the trip. Maybe saying yes to this wasn’t such a bad idea. Jake gave you a hug and watched as you let Javy into your condo. 

“I hope you can fall asleep fast. We gotta be out of here by five,” you said as you kicked your shoes off and made your way to your bedroom. Javy decided to sleep on the couch, so you gave him a blanket and a few pillows before packing your bags and putting them by the door to your room for the morning. You didn’t sleep at all. All you did was watch some of Tyler’s favorite shows and cry. Your alarm went off and you took a quick shower before packing the rest of your belongings.

The flight to Philadelphia was the first time that you had slept. With your phone on airplane mode, there wasn’t anything to do, and there wasn’t anyone to message. You fell asleep with your head on Javy’s shoulder, watching Ghostbusters. He woke you up before the plane was about to land, which was good, because you hated the turbulence. As soon as you got a rental car, you called Kasey and she told you that the two of you could stay in her spare room. Javy wouldn’t let you drive. He jumped in the driver’s seat and passed you his phone before you got the chance to say anything.

When you walked in, all of your friends were sitting in the living room. They got up and greeted you as you introduced them to Javy and briefly mentioned Jake. Kasey told him where the guest room was and you watched as he took everything up the stairs. You sat down with your friends and started discussing the celebration of life, which was something that none of you thought you were ever going to have to do until you were all old. There was going to be a candle light vigil, and the funeral was going to be limited to family.

The vigil was one of the hardest parts. When you greeted his parents, they gave you the note. Javy stood behind you as you read it and started to cry. 

“I still don’t understand,” you said as you crawled into the bed.

“I know,” Javy said. You fell asleep in his arms.

By the end of the week, both of you were able to head back to California. You hadn’t really talked to Jake like you said you would, and you could tell that he was mad by the time you had all met up at The Hard Deck. The first thing that he had noticed when he walked in was Javy’s hands on you, and you giggling at something that was said. 

“I need to talk to the two of you outside. Now,” he said. Bob and Phoenix watched as the three of you walked outside.

“Alright, now can either of you explain to me what the hell this is?” He asked, as he motioned at  you.

“Listen, man. I went to Philly with her like you asked and well, some shit happened. I was there to comfort her, and I think that you really need to not worry about it. You’ve got that deployment in a few-,”

“You fucked my girlfriend?!” Jake exclaimed. You were glad that you were outside, because this whole discussion definitely would’ve ended in a bar fight.

“Oh my God, this is ridiculous. Jake, you know what happened, and you told me that you couldn’t go because you had to get ready for your deployment. You didn’t check in on me to see how I was doing. I needed you in my hardest moment and you weren’t there. You chose not to be there, because you could’ve bought yourself a ticket if you felt like you needed to. I don’t know what got into you, but I’m done putting up with it. Thank you for sending Javy in your place, because he was there for me. He was there for everything. And no, we didn’t have sex since that’s all you seem to be worried about. I’m disappointed in you, Jake. The jealousy is one thing, but during that whole trip, I had to text you. I think you lied to me, too. You’re always here with the guys or at the gym with the guys. There’s no reason why it should take you a week to pack your bags for a month long deployment.”

“Okay, so, you don’t want to be with me but you’ll be with my friend instead?”

“Yeah, because at least I know that he won’t lie and leave me hanging like you did. Not to mention, he doesn’t have the emotional intelligence of a toddler. You’re really living up to your callsign and that’s not a compliment. Good luck on your deployment or whatever. I would tell you to text me but you won’t even do the bare minimum and it shows. Now, I’m going back inside. Try not to beat the shit out of each other.”

Jake and Javy sat on the steps outside. When you walked back in, Phoenix and Bob asked if you were doing okay.

“I’m sorry, man,” Javy said.

“Whatever, just don’t fuck up like I did.”

The Walking Dead 11x14 spoilers

I just watched the episode 11x14. Okay...

Gonna tag @thewalkingdead-imagines because I really wanna read your thoughts about it all! Read this post (if you want) after watching episode 14.

• I take back what I said about the timeline. In a second analysis , it's entirely possible.

Why? Because: A month has passed between the episode that Negan leaves and the episode that some of the characters are living in the Commonwealth. (Ep. 9 - 1 month - Ep. 10)

In Episode 10, Tyler Davis, the former soldier, is arrested for the fuss he made at the masquerade ball. In Episode 11, Kelly and Connie are investigating the Commonwealth military and Tyler's treatment. And they have a conversation with Mercer in the woods, and Kelly mentions that Tyler has been in the hospital for a month under armed guard, so... (Ep. 10 - 1 month - Ep. 11)

The teaser trailer for episode 15 shows Daryl arriving at the gates of the Hilltop, as shown in the 6 month flash forward. So there's no denying that by episode 15, six months have passed since Negan left and almost 3 or more until episode 14, so... It's his child, and most of us are stupid assholes that don't pay attention 🤌🏻 One problem solved. (and I mean some of us, 'cause man, we're so inattentive

• I liked Annie, this episode shows a little more of her, despite everything being around Negan, which is kind of shit. Hopefully in the next few episodes we can find out more about Annie as a individual, not Annie as just Negan's wife. She demonstrates leadership traits, she is a strong and firm woman, understanding and definitely Negan respects her VERY MUCH.

• Negan is a sad puppy in this episode and in every scene I felt like giving him a hug. But I guess that's to be expected considering it's the first conversation he's had with Hershel Jr, and the kid points a gun in his face. Negan always liked kids, he always had a certain kind of protectiveness, and seeing a 7 year old point a gun in his face, with an urge to kill him because he killed the boy's father weighed heavily on him, and still more knowing that Annie is carrying his child, it was a good analogy of when he killed Glenn, he felt what he caused with great force in that scene and he held himself very hard not to cry. (Jeffrey's subtle acting in those moments was spectacular).

• One thing I DEFINITELY didn't like at all. Lydia's reunion with Negan... Man, what the fuck was that? Like, Lydia says he left without saying a word, clearly sad, and Negan responds by saying that he left because he didn't give a shit and that's what everyone wanted. Like?? Really?? Are you really going to say he didn't care about her? Because she felt it man. Seriously, my heart broke for her when he said that. A disappointment man! Why did they build such a nice relationship between the two of them for him to say that shit to her face later? And she was the only one who cared for him, who missed him when he left. They shit on it hard.

• Lauren's acting was also great. We can see the deep conflict, the worry, the fear on her face during the conversation with Annie and when she finds out that Negan is taking care of Hershel. She's trying to process all the danger and tension they're going through, the reunion with Negan, the revelations about his life and Hershel's whereabouts along with Negan. It's too much for her and yet she's still going strong. I'm so sorry that Maggie has to relive all of this now that Hershel knows. You can see in her face how much the revelation that Annie's baby is Negan's hit her hard. I really want to see what happens in the next few episodes regarding this situation between these four characters.

•About Negan and Annie's relationship. I still think it was something all of a sudden that's just going to be a tool to make the plot work, which is a shame because I can really see Negan really liking Annie, I think she would be the type of woman for him. I really wish they had shown all the building of this relationship, because it's been more than 3 months or so, they've managed to get to know each other at least a little bit, it's still a short time, considering it's a fucking zombie apocalypse and you can't go around trusting everyone that fast, whether you've had sex with them or not. And I don't think Negan would be the type of guy to jump isto such a serious relationship, considering everything he's been through with Lucille, or rather what he's lost with her and everything else he's lived through until he gets to this point. If they had introduced her a few seasons earlier or built it right, this relationship would have been pretty good. If it was something the writers really wanted to keep through the season. Because the actress who plays Annie was not seen in any episodes filmed later in the season, not with other actors and not with Jeffrey, so I don't think she's gonna survive, and honestly, there's no reason to introduce a brand new relationship in the last fucking season of the show!

I don't think I can make a top three, but I really want to see the slow burning romance between Helen and Erik develop, I'm curious how they'll tackle Cal's outburst and anger issues (perhaps adding on to the mental health discussion they started last season with Kyle?) and I'm very interested to see how they'll make the relationship between Annie and Jackson deteriorate.

I think Tyler still has a way to go before he confesses to Annie, as he's finally allowing himself to discover what he likes and what he wants to do with his life. Maybe at the end of the season as a cliffhanger! (I'm not really worried about Lilly getting into a relationship with him. But her interest in Tyler might trigger Annie to re-evaluate her feelings!)

The running for mayor storyline and the new story about the woman slashing Dana-Sue's tires don't really intrigue me, but I'll hold my judgement for now.

Also, I hope we'll see Kyle's video game completed! They gave that so much screen time last season!

I just never get tired of two strangers who gotta get married for politics or whatever and then they just gotta figure out how to live together, learn each other’s language, overcome cultural differences.... IT’S SO GOOD EVERY TIME. Here are a few of my favorite Arranged Marriage fics in no particular order:

Summary: Bellamy’s already there by the time she makes her way to the centre of the room. She didn’t get a good look at him before, so Clarke takes the time to look at him now.

The first time I read this fic, i had never seen a single episode.

"Ugh, this is so stupid." You said, trying to get away from your desk and walk away. "Oh, come on. One more." Bryce said, pulling you back down. "No, I'm never going to get it," you said. You were trying to study for your last exam for graduation. Bryce had already graduated the previous year, so you asked him to help you. However, there was one problem, you didn't get it. "Come on. It's not bad." Bryce said, laughing. "That's easy for you to say. You have all those big brainy things," you told him.

He wouldn't let you leave your seat, he was trying to get you to try the problem one more time, but you refused. When his guard was down, you tried to jump up to make a run for it, but he caught you, threw you over his shoulder, and set you back down at your desk. "Bully." You said, crossing your arms and pouting. "Yeah, but I'm a nice bully." He said, kissing your forehead and going back to sit on your bed.

"I'm going to fail." You said, pacing back and forth. "You did fine, don't worry," Alex said. You had taken the exams and were waiting on a response. Alex, Bryce, and Annie had all come over to see what you would get. They were all hyping you up while you practically were dying of anticipation. Then, your phone rang. "I don't wanna look." You said, holding out your phone for someone else to look. Alex got up and took it, reading for a second, and then said, "YOU PASSED." Everyone shot up and started cheering.

You couldn't believe you actually passed. You were all so excited you barely knew what to do. You planned that if you passed, after your graduation party you would take a trip, you, Bryce, Alex and her boyfriend Tyson, and Annie and Tyler, which they had started dating not too long ago, you would go to like Japan or Paris or something. Now that you actually did it, you were all super excited.

It was early April, and you were planning on having your graduation party in June, and then you were going to go to Pairs that next morning and stay for a week and a half.

Wanna go to the movies today?

Bryce: I can't. I'm working today.

Ok. Tell Tyson I said hi.

Bryce: Ok

Bryce and Alex's boyfriend, Tyson, worked together, so they had gotten pretty close, along with Tyler, who had started dating Annie. Later in the day, you were bored, so you decided to go and surprise Bryce at his job. He worked at a store, so you just walked in and walked around for a while looking for him. After a while, you got to the aisle and saw him standing talking to someone. Before you walked all the way in, you looked closer to see who it was. It was Amari. Why would she be here?

You saw her hand him something, and they seemed all weird and secretive. What the heck? Your body moved on its own and walked into the aisle. "What are you guys doing?" You said, causing them both to turn around in shock. "Y/n? What are you doing here?" Bryce asked, walking toward you and putting whatever he had in his pocket. "What's that?" You said, trying to see, but he moved, so I couldn't. "Wow." You scoffed and started walking away. "Y/n. It's nothing. Calm down." Bryce said, coming after you.

You kept walking and ignored him, but eventually, he grabbed your arm and pulled you to the side into one of the bathrooms. "Wha- this is the lady's room you can't-" you started before he cut you off. "I work here. I can do what I want," he said. He pushed you against the wall and put both his hands on the side of your head. You couldn't walk away. "Now listen. I know what you're thinking, so stop. Nothing is going on." He said aggressively. "Then what did she give? A promise ring?" You said sarcastically. "No. It was something Tyler gave her to give to me," he said. "And what was it for?" you asked. "It's for Tyson. I'm giving it to him when he gets here. It's guy stuff, don't worry about it," he said.

As much as you wanted not to believe him, you couldn't stay mad at him. "Fine." You said, not making eye contact. He looked at you for a second and then leaned down closer to your ear and quietly said, "And next time, don't embarrass me in front of people, or we will have a problem. Got it?" His voice was deep and demanding. You nodded slowly. "Use your words," he said. "Got it." You said, trying to hold in your smile. He said good and then stepped back so you could move again. You walked out of the bathroom, and he said he had to go back to work, but he was going to come by your house later, and you guys could see a movie.

Later that night, he came by your house and picked you up, and you went to a movie. The movie was good, but on the way back, you started falling asleep. "Are you gonna stay over tonight?" You asked sleepily. He said sure. When you got there, you both went to your room. "Hey, you wanna watch tv?" Bryce asked you. You nodded ok and went down to the basement. "I vote we turn something on and not watch the tv." You said, leaning into him. When you got down the stairs, Bryce hit the light, and a bunch of people jumped out and yelled, "SURPRISE!"

You stood there in shock for a second and then turned to Bryce. "I wanted to surprise you. I know you were planning for in a few months, but I wanted to do something special," he said. You said thank you and hugged him. When you pulled away, you said quietly, "Do you think they heard what I said?" He smiled so that everyone didn't think something was wrong, "Yup."

It was a lot of fun with everyone there. "So that's why you were talking to Amari earlier?" You asked Bryce as you all were talking. "Oh yeah. He took your key so I could give it to Tyson, and they could get in while we were gone," he said. "Oh yeah, and by the way. You know how we are supposed to go on the trip after your party. Well, we switched it, so tomorrow we will be going," he added. "Oh my god, really?" You said excitedly. "Yeah. I know how excited you were for it and how it was going to be nice going after your party, so I planned it earlier, so you didn't have to die waiting," he said. You'd never felt more excited.

Everyone stayed until about 2:30 am. Bryce said your flight was at 1 pm, so you said bye to everyone and told Tyler, Alex, Annie, and Tyson you would see them in a few hours. While you and Bryce cleaned up, Alyssa and your parents went to sleep. You finished around three and headed up to your room. "Thank you for tonight." You said to him as you sat on your bed. "Of course," he said. He leaned down and kissed you. You kissed for a second until you stopped and looked up at him. It was like for that spilt second time froze. You leaned back in a kissed him again.

You started laying back, and he followed, hovering over you, not breaking the kiss. He moved his head down and started kissing your neck. You balled your hands in his shirt and felt him running one of his hands under your shirt. You guys had done stuff in the past, of course, but you had never gone all the way. Only a few things here and there. He kept slowly sliding his hands further up your shirt until he stopped a little below your bra. "You wanna do this?" he asked. You nodded, "Yes."

A silly crush that had only grown during every subsequent field trip — which is truly absurd, considering the vast majority of their interactions at the time consisted of occasional eye contact while singing children’s songs.But now that they’ve spent hours talking almost every day for the past few weeks… calling it a silly crush might be an understatement. The idea that he’s actually been able to help Midoriya through this is inordinately pleasing.If there’s a silver lining to this at all — for him personally, at least — it’s that he’d seen Midoriya’s post requesting a virtual board game buddy. And that Midoriya is a patient enough person to teach Shouto how to play everything from scratch. He’d actually seemed excited at the opportunity.Maybe the opportunity for any sort of ongoing social interaction is worthy of excitement. These are strange times.

It all comes out in the wash by middlemarch. (G) 1.1k, Anna/Kristoff.  She'd knocked. Really, she had. It was their en suite bathroom, the room he said was over-the-top and extravagant and aggressively tiled, so it wasn't exactly her fault that she'd effectively barged in on him.

Anchor by farfetched. (G) 5.3k, Semi Eita/Tendou Satori. Spreading their arms out either side of them, they stare at the ceiling. This is pulling on them in so many ways they didn't expect; laying here, on Tendou's floor, in Tendou's clothes, right down to their underwear because who expects a lockdown to get enforced overnight? They didn't bring anything much. They should have. They ought to chance going home. But they can't, so they don't. Home is an empty place right now anyway, and here there is food and laughter and music and in between all that is their realisation that they're not so over this Tendou thing after all.

Not wanting to put his whole family at risk, he and Cahir move into Cahir's old flat and they try to weather the storm by themselves when Geralt does get infected.

The Fortnight by Elizabeth. (E) 7.5k, Geralt of Rivia/Jaskier.  A plague is ravaging the Northern Kingdoms. First Oxenfurt is locked down, and then Novigrad. Geralt is immune, but Jaskier isn't. Rosemary and Thyme is a pretty nice place to spend a fortnight, but it's still a long time to spend with just one person--even if that person is your best friend.A lot can happen in two weeks.

Trouble In Here by Val_Creative. (M) 2.5k,  Geralt of Rivia/Jaskier. Jaskier accidentally barricades himself into Geralt’s room when he’s been cursed, forcing them to isolate together.

When you're sentenced to working from home due to the recent COVID-19 virus, you step onto your shared balcony for the first time. You meet Shuichi and really like him. The only problem? You have to stay six feet apart.

So I watched season 1 of Sweet magnolias, and I have thoughts and feelings. So I immediately tried to spoil myself by googling the book series the show was based upon and found out that that event at the end of the season did not happen in the books at all. So I began to create my own theories as to what might happen next and also what I would like to see happen next. I thought about it a lot and I'm 100% sure certain they are going to use flashbacks in season 2 to show what happened between Kyle running out of the party and the car crash. Something had to have happened because we don't see anybody grabbing the car keys which means it was probably in Tyler's pocket, though why Jackson would have a ‘no phones’ policy at his parties but not a ‘no car keys’ policy too idk. So, either Kyle took them from him or Tyler gave them to Kyle, why would he do that? What would happen to get Tyler and Kyle in a situation where Kyle can grab the keys and get to the car before someone else can stop him?  I think that there has to be a couple scenes. They could have someone who was there just tell the parents about it but I think it would be more effective to show it directly. My thought as to who was in the passenger seat is probably Annie and I'm sad about it because I feel that it would be better if it was Tyler, like it would make more sense. But if Annie is injured then the show can use that for drama, with the burgeoning Annie/Tyler relationship and to further animosity between Annie and CC. In the book series Annie spent the second book in the hospital for a different reason and I think that the show might borrow a lot of that plot line for her recovering from a car accident, if they intend for Dana Sue to have the same plot line and HEA as in the books. I don't want them to though, but I think they are going to keep it because it's a romance series and when people watch movies based on romance books they expect the core couples to remain the same. But, with the cheating issue they are probably going to have to muddy the waters more to make it seem like Dana Sue overreacted, I don’t think they should though, I want Dana Sue to get together with Hot Farmer.  But lesigh, Dana Sue's probably going to get back together with the cheating ex and the show will likely have Annie in the hospital to give them time to bond and hold hands and whatever by her bedside. I hope they decide to change the details as to what Ronnie did to make Dana Sue leave him because like if it's straight up cheating I don't think i could support that because its like Bill cheated and he’s a selfish ass for that, should not be forgiven. Check, I agree on this point. Then you have Ronnie, who also cheated, but he’s not a selfish ass (because…?) and he should be forgiven… why? The show is going to go into why/how Ronnie is different from Bill and make a case for why he deserves forgiveness and show him earning it. I would rather see Dana Sue and Jeremy get together but probably it's going to be Dana Sue and Ronnie. 

I think that Tyler being the character who is in this passenger seat would make a more interesting situation because if he's in the accident and he's injured then it might foster a situation where CC and Annie have to work together to support him or whatever and they can get to know each other without the level of jealousy that we've seen between them previously. I also worry about the potential of a  ‘and reality ensues’ plotline of the situation with your kid illegally driving a car while emotionally disturbed and harming or nearly killing someone else’s kid.  In situations that like that people tend to look for people to blame and it would be rational for Dana Sue and Ronnie to blame Maddie and Bill for their daughter's injuries and  for that matter for any parent to feel that Maddie and Bill should be held responsible for their son's actions, but if it's Tyler then you know there's no one to be mad that isn’t already involved. it makes the situation more straightforward, or rather more simple to have only one family involved, I guess. And then there's no reality ensues plot and the town taking sides and gossip and legal actions between families for damages, or medical bills, and the Townsends lose their house and the friendships over because Annie was hurt so bad and blah blah blah and it's just not as interesting to me if you have something obvious like where there’s a forgone conclusion about what will eventually happen which is the destruction of the friendship, which is the best part of the show or you'd have to like blatantly ignore the natural reaction of a mom when her child’s been hurt, ‘no Dana's not going to blame her friend for this she's going to blame...someone else’, idk. It's just not rational or reasonable to me but if the only set of parents whose children were harmed is Bill and Maddie and it's clearly an accident Kyle did not mean for this then I feel like the show can be more interesting than just the breakdown of a friendship over a tragic accident. Though I do think that Maddie will one way or the other blame Bill for giving her kid that Goddamn car when she knew her child was not ready for that and if he had asked her she would have said no don't do that Tyler is struggling with rage issues He's going to drive while mad and wrap himself around a fucking pole and that's not exactly what happened but she was correct in principal.

Couples from the books I think the show might actually change is Annie and Tyler. A lot of people have said that Tyler seems like he might be gay or bi and I do think that they might change the core couples of the books for the purpose of adding more diversity to the show. I mean there are LGBTQ characters and there are characters of color but more is better in this case and Tyler would be a different type of gay character, or bisexual, depending on how they decide to play it and i think it would be really good to have more characters breaking stereotypes about gay people. One thing I definitely want to see is CC and Annie becoming friends. Like it doesn't have to happen right away like I'm not saying season two starts and suddenly they're braiding each other's hair and having sleepovers but I would really like them to bond and see them learn to appreciate each other. I’d like for CC and Annie to have to work together and they get to know each other without the level of jealousy that we've seen between them previously like CC totally thinks or perhaps knows depending on your theory about it that Tyler is into Annie and Annie definitely understands that Tyler's more comfortable expressing interest in CC and I think they both want to be what the other is, and I don't think either of them really has learned to appreciate themselves the way you do when you're older and I think that they could you know sort of give each other a crash course in self-esteem and be like ‘of course I want to be you you're fucking amazing’ ‘I’m not amazing, you’re a-fucking-mazing’ and you know that could sort of be the basis for a friendship between them.  Like, you know that idea of history repeating itself I'd like for all of the children characters to eventually go off to college and build life and then come back to Serenity and like you know could be a time skip sort of thing and Tyler's had a career in baseball and maybe he's had a career ending injury like in the books or otherwise had some sort of scandal. I sort of like the idea of borrowing the plot from the book where its a cheating scandal, but its CC and his relationship that ends and CC goes back to Serenity with his kid and Annie is there too, and Tyler is juggling trying to build or rebuild a relationship with his son and get visitation and everything, while also dealing with a renewed attraction to Annie, who in this version would be a lost love character. And Annie could be like, “No, we are not starting anything with each other you need to focus on you’re fucking kid, remember how you felt during the whole thing with Bill, that is exactly where your son is emotionally right now, so dont come to me for comfort, go to him and show him you care about him, you ass.” And CC could be bitter and angry, only to discover that Annie is on her side and Annie and CC could become friends through Annie helping CC get her life back on track, maybe Helen could take CC on in her law practice (I feel like CC would be a lawyer or something, but not a practicing one, like she has a law degree, but not an active law licence and she’s actually been a stay at home mom).

Or maybe Tyler's been outed as gay/bi... I don’t really like that but him being forced out of the closet but that could be a career ending scandal and Jackson could be a local business owner (or a teacher at the highschool, this idea just occurred to me) or Annie could have been a renowned photojournalist or just a well known photographer or something. Whoever they decide pair Tyler with I'd like for them to have separated and grown into adulthood separately so they can like meet back up in serenity and get to know each other as adults as Tyler is dealing with this upheaval in his life and his love interest could be the one giving him the tough love, advice and comfort he needs at that point. I think that would be a really good storyline there like he's had his dream come true dreams come true, but not been happy because somethings missing, or he’s keeping this huge secret, or whatever and when it all falls apart he goes home and meets this person from his past. 

But I do definitely want CC to come back into it in some way as well and maybe she's like been in serenity the entire time in some sort of analogous role to the role Helen plays in some of the storylines. Maybe she's got a successful practice, maybe it's a little bit bigger than Helen's is portrayed, maybe she travels instead but serenity is still her home base and she supports the community the same way Helen does.  I think Annie and CC could be really good friends. Maybe more than friends, if the show decides to go with the fandom preferred, everyone is gay strategy.

Please please write Tyler x Annie fic! I love them together. Having watched the show twice now I can see that they're going to end up together like in the books but I do agree on my first watch I wasn't sure whether his reaction to her kissing him was shock or he was worried about letting her down cause he doesn't see her that way or doesn't like girls. It's clear when you watch a second time that he just was worried about ruining their friendship. They'll def be cute together :-)

Oh trust me nonnie, I definitely plan on writing fanfic of them. As for his reaction - I think it was shock, and then worry about their friendship. Because at one point, when he’s home alone, he kind of looks happy while remembering, but he’s also in clear denial, lmao.

1. What was your favourite scene of the episode? Tell us why!

oooh it’s def the scene where the girls are getting ready to rob fine & frugal. i just find it hilarious that they’re about to rob a store and they’re talking about how their kids are doing in school?? like, what absolute lunatics!! and i think it sets up their dynamic very well right from the beginning, idk. everyone’s always saying that the three girls have a very lived-in chemistry and i agree and i think you can feel it right from this first scene of them together

2. Was there any scene that missed the mark for you? And if so, how?

idk?? i’m very bad at reading and watching things critically, i’m very easy to please, i think?? and this ep just makes me pleased as punch!! but i guess that the scene with beth and amber, while funny, doesn’t really hit the mark for me?? idk, the way she’s framed as a “beautiful dummy” and not as much at fault as dean kind of irks me. i totally get that dean is the married one, but amber clearly knew he was married and somewhat regularly saw his wife, i don’t think she should really be absolved of that. and, idk, i don’t like that she basically got a prize for cheating - like, “here, you helped my husband cheat on me, so take some money to go live your dreams” is such a weird response?? beth was very scathing in the delivery and i get the point was for amber to be out of their lives but, like, still?? why not just tell dean he has to fire her?? this just further proves that beth is an idiot and an absolute lunatic, which we already knew

3. Let’s talk about the Big 6 Character Intros – Beth, Ruby, Annie, Dean, Stan, Rio. What did you think? What did you like? What did you dislike?

oooh i really liked all of them!!!

i absolutely love annie’s, it’s so fun with the car speeding and then with her banter with ben. i love the way they set up their dynamic right from the get go!!

and then ruby and stan’s intro was also amazing!! you get right away that they love each other so much and are so supportive of each other!! the way they both gesture when sara is talking about the women standing next to the men is so cute!!! i love it!!

rio’s is also amazing, he’s a snarky little bitch right from the get go and they really did a great job of also surprising us, thanks to the camera angle, and really driving home that he’s the boss.

i think the one i liked the least is actually beth and dean’s?? i mean, they do a good job of immediately letting you know that beth is the overworked mother and dean is the lazy, good-for-nothing husband - i mean, she’s running around, taking care of everything, and then he just strolls in and asks the kids to go to the car, without even having his tie done. but i think it’s a little misleading and i think it’s one of the reasons why the fandom (including myself) maybe has a harder time accepting beth staying with dean (aside from the fact that dean is a fucking asshole and he deserves nothing less than a horrible death, i mean)?? it really sticks in your mind this contempt she seems to have for him?? and, of course, then you get the flashback to beth getting waxed for him, and so you understand that they were maybe going through a bit of a rough patch but she wanted to work through it, but what sticks in your mind is that first scene, where she’s full of contempt, not even able of saying a perfunctory i love you back. and since they seem to want to drag out the boland marriage as much as possible, i think they kind of failed there.

4.   Ruby tells Stan to fix the damn door! Is Stan an amazing handyman? A terrible one??? 

i think stan is anywhere from ok to amazing, they’re just so overworked that he hasn’t had time?? idk, paired with the fact that he says he’s pulling a double at the beginning of the ep and that it doesn’t seem to be a new or uncommon thing, it just reads to me like a thing he really does want to take care of at some point but hasn’t found the time to do yet

5. Do you think Beth, Ruby or Annie had a way out of their individual financial situations that didn’t involve crime?

in short: nope. in long:

ruby and stan are desperate. they mention stan’s parents at some point, but i assume they just don’t have the money to help them?? and, i mean, they’re both working double shifts and they mention that they’ve had their gofundme page up for years. i think if they had any other way they absolutely would’ve already taken it, for sara’s sake.

we can assume from the flashbacks we get in 2x08 that annie and beth didn’t have as stable a home life as all that. i assume that either their parents are both now dead or they just have no communication with them. either way, they don’t have them as a safety net.

when it comes to annie, she’s working a minimum wage job, driving a very shitty car and her kid’s laptop has been broken for a month without her being notified, because said kid knows they don’t have the money to get a knew one. she does ask for help from the richest person the girls know later (that’s how i think they phrased?? i’m pretty sure), her ex, who promptly says no. so, yeah, it’s safe to say she doesn’t have a way out of her financial situation either.

and, in regards to beth, i think she would absolutely help ruby (and annie) if she could. so the fact that she doesn’t, paired with the fact that we get mentions later that this is not the first time dean has managed to basically bankrupt the car dealership, makes me assume that either the bolands were living close to paycheck to paycheck, but stable enough that she didn’t worry, or that she did think they had some spare money and did give that to them when she could?? because i don’t see how she would not give ruby the money for sara, if she thought she had it, especially when she does it later in the season.

so, no, i don’t really think any of the girls had safety nets or ways to get out of their financial situation. except for beth. she could’ve gotten a job. i know it would’ve been hard because of her lack of work experience, but she could’ve at least tried instead of immediately jumping to robbery!!

6. Is Beth’s backsplash dope? Or was Rio just being a dick??

both!! i mean, i personally like the backsplash, but rio was absolutely just being an asshole, whether or not he did believe it was dope had nothing to do with it.

7. Five major story locations were set up this episode – Ruby’s house, Beth’s house, Annie’s apartment, as well as Fine & Frugal and Boland Motors. Was there anything that jumped out for you about these locations in this episode? Do you think that they were well established given what happens in each across the course of the series?

ok so i don’t know enough about like tv shows and storylines and all that stuff to answer this, i’m sorry. but, like, i think it’s very cool that fine & frugal is robbed in the first and last episodes of season 1, it’s a fun full-circle type of thing, and i love that we’re introduced to boland motors via dean’s affair and beth’s destruction of it because it’s something that permeates the place throughout the whole time?? i mean, beth later “borrows“ one of the cars, rio smashes the corvette because of beth, it gets raided by the fbi because of beth’s illegal activities - beth is always destroying it, even when she’s not literally destroying something like in that first episode. and in season 2 we have beth fully realising just how deep dean’s betrayal was in the middle of the boland motors showroom. both of those things are always there!! it’s cool. and saying that, i mean, they kind of went the same route with boland bubbles, if you think about it?? we get dean cheating on her there, her fully realising how deep his betrayal is via gayle’s comments and then her clearly robbing the place?? boland bubbles really is just a continuation of boland motors

8. We met lots of supporting characters this episode too – in particular Boomer, Baby Tyler, Amber and Greg. Based off of what we saw of them in this episode, pick one, and tell us what you think!

i love baby tyler and amber!! i love that we’re introduced to baby tyler being all smiley and y’know a little bit ridiculous eating ice cream while on the job and maybe obviously inept because of it. and maybe you expect him to not do anything during the robbery because of that but then he really tries?? he thinks he’s facing off with 3 armed criminals and he really goes for it, he doesn’t cower like boomer!! he’s adorable!! and amber i already talked about and i know i was a bit harsh but i really do love her!! her oblivious comments are gold.

9. Screenshot and/or tell us about your favourite character look~ this episode.

frankly, this ep doesn’t really have any stand out looks for me?? the one exception is annie’s outfit when she picks up ben in the porsche. you can really tell how happy she is that she could one up nancy, that she’s proud of herself because she’s gonna get to give ben the laptop he needs.

This episode gives us some sharp character notes on Beth, Ruby and Annie – from Beth’s capacity for violence to Ruby’s visceral anger around being ignored, particularly when it comes to her daughter’s wellbeing, to Annie’s tendency to run a mile when given an inch. Is there a moment that stood out to you, particularly in light of future seasons?

ohhh i mean, there’s something to be said about beth’s capacity for violence uh? she keeps refusing to acknowledge it, because that doesn’t fit her stepford wife without a pulse image as annie calls it, but it’s always there - she’s always ready to blow up and throw some keys at your face. and ruby’s response to being ignored kind of screws her over?? she was very lucky jt only wanted her address for his nephew and didn’t become a second mary pat. idk, i’m sorry. like i said, not very good at critical thinking.

Thanksgiving, the family friendly holiday. For me, it was a lie. I was constantly lying to my family about who I was. I'm gay, but I'm so worried about telling my family about it, but also I want to just get it over with. My boyfriend Kevin Keller was gonna help me this year. His father was busy with work and wasn't able to do anything for Thanksgiving this year so I invited Kevin to my family's house. I told him that I wanted to tell them today and he was more than happy to be there for me.

I was helping my mom set up the table and living room while our family was enjoying themselves. I was so nervous that I needed busy work to help me keep calm. There was a knock on the door and I called out saying I would get it. I opened the door and there was my boyfriend smiling at me. 

"I brought cookies." He said with his cute smile. 

"You didn't have to." I said taking them from him. 

"I know, but it's rude to show up without something." He said and went to kiss me but I moved back. 

"Sorry, but can we wait till after?" I asked and he sadly nodded. 

"Thanks." I smiled and he gave me a small smile in return. 

"Y/N, honey, who is it?" My mother called walking into the room. 

"This is Kevin, remember I asked if he could come since his dad is working?" I asked. 

"Oh yes! I'm sorry I've been so busy all day I forgot. It's nice to meet you Kevin." She said holding out her hand and Kevin shook it.

"Nice to meet you too Mrs.Y/L/N, Y/N has told me so much about you." He said with a smile. 

"All good things I hope." My mother joked. 

"Of course mom!" I said and she laughed. 

"Well come on in and meet the family. We're not a big family but there's a few of us." She said. 

"Y/N will introduce you." She said. 

"Oh mom, he brought these." I said handing her the plate. 

"Oh how lovely! Thank you Kevin." She said and hurried back to the kitchen. 

"So when are you going to do it?" He asked and I shrugged. 

"I don't know, maybe this was a bad idea…" I said and Kevin shook his head.

"That's why I'm here, to help you." He said and I sighed. 

"I know…" I said. 

"Anyways let me introduce you to everyone." I said changing the subject. We walked into the living room and everyone looked at us. 

"Everyone, this is Kevin. Kevin this is my dad Y/F/N, my grandma, grandpa, granny, and pappy, my aunt Julia, uncle Jack, aunt Annie, uncle Paul, and my cousins Jamie, Tara, Tyler, Frankie, and the twins Joey and Kimmie." I said pointing to everyone as I named them. 

"It's nice to meet you all." Kevin said smiling. 

"You too Kevin. Come sit, make yourself at home." My dad said and we both sat down. We made casual conversation until mom called everyone for dinner. We all sat down and started eating. Everything was going great until the questions started.

"So Y/N? Have a girlfriend yet?" Uncle Jack asked. 

"Umm no." I answered. 

"What about that Betty Cooper girl, she seems very nice." My mom said. 

"She does, you two would make a nice couple." My dad chimed in.

"She's already dating someone…" I said feeling awkward. 

"Oh, well what about another girl you go to school with?" Aunt Annie asked. Kevin could tell I was uncomfortable and I felt him grab my hand under the table and gave it a light squeeze. 

"Actually there's something I want to tell all of you…" I said. 

"You have a secret girlfriend, I knew it! Tyler you owe me ten bucks!" Kimmie said excitedly but I shook my head.

"Um no... " I said and everyone looked at me confused. 

"I'm actually gay…" I said. It felt like a weight was lifted off my chest, I can't believe those words came out of my mouth! 

"You're gay?" Frankie asked and I nodded. I glanced over at my parents and my father's face couldn't be read but my mother was smiling at me sweetly. 

"I've known for a while now and um actually Kevin is my boyfriend…" I admitted and he smiled at me proudly. 

"We will not have a faggot in this house!" My grandpa shouted. 

"Dad!" My mother scolded him.

"What? It's not natural!" He shouted back.

"I will not let you call my son that or anything like that!" My dad shouted and my grandpa glared at me then him.

"You mean to tell me you're okay with having a fairy for a son?" He growled. 

"I'm proud that my son can finally come out about how he really feels." My mother said and I looked at her confused.

"Oh honey, we've known for a bit now." She said and I stared at her shocked. 

"How?" I asked. 

"We're your parents, we know." My dad said with a smile. 

"And if anyone doesn't accept Y/N for who he really is then this will be your last Thanksgiving with us." My dad said to everyone. 

"Damn fairies." My grandpa mumbled and walked out of the room. 

"Don't mind your grandpa dear, he's stuck in the old times." My grandma said. 

"You and Kevin make a nice pair." My granny added. 

"You each, reminds me of my best friend and his boyfriend." Pappy commented. 

"So does this mean we can come to you for fashion advice?" Tara asked making everyone laugh. 

"I'm serious, can we?" She said and I chuckled. 

"Sure." I said and the girls squealed with happiness. 

"I'm happy you found someone and finally told us." My mom said and I smiled with tears in my eyes. 

"Me too." I said looking at Kevin who was smiling at me. 

"Finally we don't have to sneak around anymore!" Kevin said making everyone laugh. Now that I finally came out I don't know what I was so scared about.

boss baby pt. 2

Over the weekend, I was in contact with Nancy to prepare for a type of welcome slash congratulatory lunch party thing for that new author guy and the company. As Monday rolled up, we were busy preparing everything at the office pantry.

"Hey, Lexine.” Nancy called, looking through the list on her clipboard. “Are we good to go here?”

“Yeah.” I sigh. It was almost 11 in the morning, and we were expecting people to arrive by then. “This was tiring. How did you survive through this when you were alone?”

“I don’t.” She chuckled. “I die right after then come back to life.”

Shawn enters the room, looking much more edible than the food...

“Everything looks good here, ladies.” He said, eyes going around the room. He went to check on the mini buffet we got catered and scrunched his nose up at the last meal. “Why is there tomato pasta?”

I look at Nancy, confused as to why Shawn was asking about the tomato pasta.

“He doesn’t like tomatoes.” Nancy whispered, and I just nodded in understanding but still confused.

A few minutes later, employees from every department started to come and Shawn greeted them at the door.

Shawn called for me and as I went to stand by his side, Tyler arrives with his team. “Hey man.” Shawn greeted him and they did the man handshake hug type thing.

“Hi.” I gave them a small smile and ushered them to the buffet table, leaving Shawn.

“Lexine, right?” Tyler asked, looking like he was about to say something else.

“Yes.”

“It’s nice to see you again.” He said, letting his team go first.

“You too, and congratulations again on the book deal.” I smiled.

“Yeah, thank you! I think it was because of you, you’re kind of like a lucky charm.” Tyler joked which actually got me giggling.

“But really, it was all you. The book is amazing, I’ve just finished reading the unedited version you sent us.”

“Thank you. Have you eaten? Come eat with us.” He offered and put his hand on my back, as a gesture to get me to cut in front of him.

I took a step back to get his hand to fall from my back. I looked around the room to see if someone saw, but instead made eye contact with my boss who was slowly approaching us.

“No, you guys go ahead. I’ll eat when everybody’s done. Thank you.” I told Tyler with a small smile.

“Hey, let’s eat.” Shawn said, who now has his hand on my back. He smiled at Tyler before guiding me to the end of the line.

“I really should let everybody eat first.” I smiled nervously at Shawn but just got pushed back in line by the hand that was still on my back.

“Eat.” He said firmly, took his hand off my back and handed me a plate.

“Okay..” 

When we sat down with our food, Shawn was just looking at me like he wanted to say something.

“What?” I asked.

Shawn shrugged, finally starting to eat. “Didn’t say anything.”

“Yeah, but why are you looking at me like that? Do I have something on my face?” I took a tissue and tried to wipe my face when I got stopped by Shawn.

"Nothing.” He chuckled.

I rolled my eyes at him, trying to stop the smile from forming on my face, which actually got him chuckling a bit more.

After the small gathering, Nancy and I were left at the pantry cleaning up, and Shawn and Tyler were at one corner talking about something.

Nancy nudged me on the side, and pointed to Tyler with her head. “Well, you never told me that the new author was cute.”

“Meh.” I shrugged.

“Not your type?”

“Nope.”

“But Mr. Mendes is.” She smirked at me.

“Nancy.” I hiss a little too loudly, making the two men look at us.

“Everything okay?” Shawn asked.

“Yes, sir. Uh, we’ll head back to the office now.” I said, grabbing Nancy by her elbow and pulled her towards the elevator, the both of us giggling.

“Would yah look at that.” She laughed once the elevator doors closed.

“Stop it. You’re going to get me in trouble.” I managed to say in between the fits of giggles.

“Whatever.”

When the elevator doors open, Nancy and I immediately went back to work mode and proceeded to our desks.

As Shawn walked out of the elevator, Nancy winked at me which got us both giggling again.

“Thanks for the lunch, ladies.” Shawn said.

“You’re welcome, sir.” Nancy thanked our boss for the both of us before he entered his office.

My phone beeped with a text from Annie at our group chat.

I put my phone back in my pocket and got back to work. 

The intercom buzzed followed by Shawn’s voice. “Lexine, tell Tyler to just come straight to my office when he arrives.”

I pushed the button and said, “Okay, sir.”

Tyler arrives not long after. “Hi, Mr. Mendes said that you can go ahead into his office.”

"Got it.” He replied with a smile and went into Shawn’s office.

I’ve got to say, he really is charming. I mean, your typical cutie next door with the blond hair and green eyes. You know, if you’re into that Jesse McCartney charm.

I was taken out of my thoughts by the very person in them standing in front of me. “Yes? Is there anything that you need?” I looked at Shawn’s office to see if he was coming out.

“Oh, no. The meeting’s over.” Tyler smiled at me and took out what looked like a business card from the pocket of his jacket. “I was kind of hoping that you’re available for dinner later?”

“Oh, uhm...I can’t.” I manage to choke out, a blush creeping up on my face, and took another glance at Shawn’s office. “I already made plans.”

“What about Saturday?” He raised his eyebrows at me, with a hopeful smile.

I was about to decline again when the intercom buzzed followed by my saviour’s voice. “Hi, Lexine. Can you please come in here. Thank you.”

“Sorry.” I cleared my throat of whatever was blocking it. “I need to go. Excuse me.” I quickly stood up from my desk and speed-walked to Shawn’s office, not daring to look back.

“Ah, Lexine. Can you please cancel all my meetings for tomorrow.” My boss said, looking at me briefly before turning his attention back to his phone. “I need you to help me with something.”

“Is everything okay, sir? Can I get you anything?” I asked, concern lacing my voice.

“I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow.” He said, not going into detail.

“Uh, okay. Would that be all, sir?”

“Yes, thank you.”

I walk out of Shawn’s office and see that Tyler and his invites are gone.

“Hey, I think Tyler left something on your desk.” Nancy said with a smirk on her face.

I look at my desk, and on top of it is his card. Okay, spoke too soon, Lexine. I pick it up and see that his phone number is underlined by the purple pen on my desk, he also wrote ‘saturday?’ on it. I sigh, actually feeling like a teenager being asked out on a date.

The rest of the day was uneventful for the office, and I just couldn’t wait to get home and get that drink with my best friends. A very much needed drink.

I groan as Shawn was coming out of his office. “I’m leaving, don’t worry. You can leave too.” He snickered.

“Oh, shit.” I muttered. “No, I was just-” I stuttered, unable to find the right words. “Oh what the hell.” I feel my face heat up, and covered it with my hands, not having the courage to look at my boss.

“It’s fine. Let’s go?” He asked, still chuckling.

“Go where?”

“To the elevator, Lexine? We’re just going down together, don’t stress yourself too much.” He said, grinning, finally stopped laughing at me.

“Oh right, let’s go.” I followed him to the elevator without a word, afraid that I might say something stupid again. We entered the elevator, and I stood absentmindedly by the buttons.

“You okay there?” Suddenly Shawn’s breath was fanning my face, getting me out of my trance, as he leaned to press the ground button. 

He went back to his place after pressing the button, and I dare to look back and see him standing there with a smirk on that perfect face. My face immediately heats up as I make eye contact with him.

“I hate you.” I mutter and looked at the buttons again, trying to hide my face with my hair.

The Nuptial Necessity - Chapter 3

A 12xRose Human AU

Despite an unglamorous job description, Rose loves the work she does with The Thistle Foundation, a charity founded by her best friend’s great-uncle.  It doesn’t hurt that her boss, her friend’s father, is easy on the eyes.  With a great job, wonderful friends and a loving family, life couldn’t be better – except for having someone to share it with.

All of that is threatened, though, when the great-uncle dies – and sets a strange condition for his nephew to inherit, jeopardizing the Foundation and Rose’s future, sparking a chain of events that might just get her everything she dreamed of and more.

Malcolm didn’t get a second of sleep that night.  After more than an hour tossing and turning in bed, mind racing, he reluctantly reached for his tablet and glasses, turning on the bedside lamp.

A simple Google search turned up hundreds of thousands of articles on inheritance, but none seemed to offer any solutions to receiving the inheritance without meeting the stipulations of the will.  He was an old man, perhaps he was going senile?  Why would he do this?

He shot off an email to the will executor and solicitor, asking Is it possible he was not in sound mind?  Is there a previous version of the will that doesn’t include this marriage requirement?

It was likely a vain hope, but he had to try.  Resolving to forget about the marriage idea for the moment, he turned his attention to finding a job posting board.  After a few false starts he tried charity administrator openings London, and with a sigh, began reading through the first posting.

No matter what happens, this is going to suck.  Thanks a lot, Uncle Wally.

Friday

By the time his alarm went off he was dressed and ready to go, texting Graham to cancel his morning pickup and deciding to take the Underground instead.  Pausing just outside the gate and staring up at the townhouse, he realized with a jolt, Everything I have is tied up in the Estate.  If I lose this inheritance, I lose everything.

At twenty-seven he’d fled Glasgow before the ink on his divorce papers was dry, bringing Clara to London for a fresh start.  His uncle had been kind enough to give him a job working for The Thistle Foundation in the mailroom, and he spent most of the next decade working his way up and earning his keep until Wallace decided to retire, leaving Malcolm in charge.  The townhouse went with the Estate, having been owned by the family since shortly after it was built, and he didn’t so much draw a salary from the Foundation as receive a stipend from his uncle.

I’m fifty years old and have almost nothing to my name.

It had always been a given that he would inherit; Wallace had never had children, his only sibling Malcolm’s father, and Malcolm was in effect an only child, his brother having died decades ago.  He’d never had to worry about assets, had few personal expenses.  To lose the Estate would cost him everything.

Fuck.  Fuck fuck fuck.

He was so lost in his thoughts he almost missed his stop, barely making it through the doors onto the platform before they closed.  Coming up to street-level he looked around, catching sight of the little shop Rose usually got their morning coffees from, only recognizing it by the familiar logo.

Stepping inside, it wasn’t until he was facing the cashier he realized he had no idea what Rose usually ordered.  “Erm, hi.  I don’t do this, my assistant is usually in here – pretty, blonde, big smile, name of Rose?  D’you-”

“Oh, you must be Malcolm!” the girl, Amy, gushed, eyes lighting up.  “Of course we know Rose, she’s in here everyday!  Oi, Mel, Rose’s regular order, stat!”  She turned back to him, finding him blinking at her in surprise.  “Always nice to meet a fellow Scot.  Rose is great, isn’t she?”

“The absolute best,” he agreed proudly, unsurprised but touched by the impression she obviously left everywhere she went.  That’s my gi- that’s Rose.  “I’d be hopelessly lost without her.”

“Too right.  Anyway, here we are, that’s ten quid,” she passed over two large takeaway cups of coffee and a pastry bag.

Right.  Feeling like a moron, entirely out of sorts after first the previous day’s bombshell and then no sleep, he dug out a twenty-pound note and thrust it across the space.  “Keep the change.  Thanks.”

Picking up the order he made his way to the door, more focused on the drinks than where he was walking, elbowing open the door and slamming right into someone entering.  “Shit!”  He barely managed to keep hold of everything, coffee sloshing dangerously but only spilling a little, and he looked up to give the person a piece of his mind only to stop dead in surprise.  “Oh, fuck me.”

Rose arched one eyebrow in response, a smile flickering over her lips.  “I’d rather not get banned from here, if it’s all the same to you, ta.” She plucked one of the cups from his hand, lifting it to her nose before taking a large gulp.  “What’re you doing here?”

Stepping out onto the sidewalk they started down the street towards their building, falling naturally into sync.

“I couldn’t sleep, thought I’d come in early.  I saw the place, and…” he trailed off, shrugging one shoulder.  “You’re up early.”

“Couldn’t sleep,” she echoed, rolling her eyes.  “Clara stopped by, talked my ear off until half two.  Decided to just get a move on.”

The silence was awkward, which only served to annoy him; they had always had a good rapport, after the first six or so months once she had settled into her role.  Now, eight years later he considered their partnership to be a well-oiled machine, two halves of a whole despite the on-paper power imbalance.

He held the door for her as they entered their building, nodding to the security guards as they buzzed through.  Rose hit the button on the lift for their floor, and they rode up alone.

Malcolm followed her to her desk, watching as she flicked on the lights and shrugged off her coat, vaguely curious to her routine; she typically arrived only a few minutes before him- long enough to be settled and ready to face the day, but recent enough that his coffee was always hot and fresh.

“Oh!” she yelped, turning around to see him leaning on the corner of her desk, watching her.  “D’you need something?  My computer’s still booting up.”

The words hovered on the tip of his tongue, before he sighed, shoulders slumping.  “No, I’m good.  Just- oh, you know what you’re doing.  I’ll be in my office.”  Extracting his muffin from the pastry bag he slunk into his office, falling into his desk chair and turning to gaze listlessly out the window.

What am I supposed to do?

It was, quite frankly, the worst day of Rose’s professional career.  Things got done, most of her duties able to be completed on autopilot after so long, but she could muster no spark to put into any of it.  No banter. None of her signature Rose Tyler charm.

Her computer dinged and she glanced up from where she was poking at her salad halfheartedly to groan.  “Oh, you’ve got to be motherfucking shitting me.”

“Rose Tyler!”  Malcolm’s delighted voice made her jump and yelp, “I’m so proud of you.  That was almost a proper swear.”

“Missy’s on her way up,” she didn’t even look at him, clicking on the IM box from Mickey, the building’s security guard and one of her oldest friends.  It was just an emoji, two wide eyes, but it was their code.  “What do you want me to do?”

He sighed heavily.  “Fine, I’ll see her.  I swear, she must have my office bugged or something.”

The lift dinged, and she raised her eyes to glance at him.  He looks like he’s having as rough a day as I am.  He’d said he hadn’t slept; had it been for the same reason she hadn’t?  No, he was probably thinking about the gala.  Of course it was about that, dingbat.  “I’ll send her in.”

“Thanks.”

He disappeared back into his office as Missy walked in, and Rose had to bite her lip hard to keep from laughing or rolling her eyes.  What did he ever see in her?  Missy Tucker was without comparison the most extravagant, eccentric person she’d ever met, and that included all of her mother’s rich society ‘friends’.

“Good afternoon, welcome to The Thistle Foundation, do you have an appointment?” Rose asked sweetly, as the older woman approached her desk.

“I’d like to see my husband, please.”  Missy’s smile was just as fake-sweet as Rose’s, as they went through the whole song-and-dance.  One of the very first things Rose had been taught on her first day, by both Malcolm and her predecessor Jo, was to stall Missy as long as possible, making enough trouble that she didn’t find it worth it to visit the office.

This is your best friend’s mother, this is your best friend’s mother, this is your best friend’s mother, Rose lectured herself, pretending to stare intently at her screen for a moment.  “I can give you a few minutes, but he has a call at one that he can’t miss.”

“Thank you.”  And she swept past Rose into Malcolm’s office.

Once the door shut behind her, Rose let loose an undignified snort.  Taking a subtle picture with her mobile, she texted it to Clara with the caption Your mum’s here.

Missy Tucker was the subject of ongoing amusement amongst the three; every time she appeared after months of no contact she had an entirely different style, often with a slight tweak to her features suggesting she was a fan of cosmetic surgery.  Today her chosen look was that of evil Mary Poppins, complete with a plum-colored ankle-length skirt and matching dress coat, a white dress shirt buttoned to the neck with an elaborate bow, black heeled boots, a delicate hat, and an umbrella Rose would swear was an actual prop from the movie.

She looked ridiculous, and like she would be right at home as the evil orphanage matron in a Victorian version of Annie!

Are you fucking kidding me? Clara pinged back almost immediately.  I love my Dad, but God I wish I was adopted.  Please tell me I didn’t inherit her fashion sense!

Snickering, Rose shook her head and returned to her work polishing up her resume.  At precisely one o’clock she buzzed in on the intercom, using what Clara called her flight attendant voice.  “Malcolm, I have that potential donor on line two.”

“Thank you, Miss Tyler.”

A moment later the door opened and Missy stalked out, a murderous expression on her face.  “I’ll talk to you soon,” she threatened her ex over her shoulder, ignoring Rose as she stormed towards the lift.

Rose waited until the lift doors closed before rising and entering Malcolm’s office.  “So?”

He was lying on his couch with his head back against the cushions, a crystal cut glass of scotch hanging loosely from his hand.  “She wants to reconcile, says she’s changed, wants to go back to what we once were.”

“What did you say?”  She settled gingerly on the end of the glass coffee table by his head, watching as he opened tired eyes to stare at her.

“That who we were went up in a flaming pile of shit twenty-three years ago when I caught her high in bed with the babysitter on our fifth wedding anniversary.  That who we were was a childhood friendship that went too far.  That who we were died many, many years ago.”

He looked so sad, Rose’s heart went out to him.

“It’s far, far too late now.  A part of me will always miss that, always wonder, but…  It’s ancient history.  Never mind that this is all because of Wallace’s death and the inheritance.  She didn’t say it, but I know her.  Anything that even sniffs of money or power and she’s first in line, plotting how to get it.”

“I’m sorry,” Rose offered, giving him a kind smile.  “You deserve better than her.”

Sighing, he struggled upright, turning to plant his feet on the ground and set the untouched glass of scotch on the coffee table next to her.  “Thanks.”

Their eyes met, and for once, she didn’t blush and look away.  Clara’s question from the previous night circled back through her mind, and she let herself actually see him.  Ice blue eyes capable of such a coldness shined back, warm and open, something only a privileged few were allowed to see.  His strong features could be severe, Clara had once called them attack eyebrows, but when he smiled… his entire face would light up, almost like he was a different person.

She'd always found him attractive, may have had the occasional fantasy involving them, a bottle of wine, and a hot tub, but love?

Her gaze dropped to his lips, and she automatically licked her own.  She would be lying if she said she’d never wondered – didn’t everyone, at some point?  He drew closer, and she realized that she was leaning in; they were both leaning in.  Is this really happening?

Rose’s eyes fluttered closed, her heart pounding, and she could feel his breath against her lips when-

“Dad?”
