Disney Sorting: Nick Wilde (Double Snake, Self Pres. 8w7, ENTP)

I would peg Nick Wilde as a Double Snake (Trickster Archetype, as Wisteria Lodge would classify it), similar to Megara from Disney’s Hercules. To me, the playful/scheming snake secondaries in both Megara and Nick are obvious (Even how they tease their more earnest counterparts Judy/Herc with mocking nicknames like Carrots/Wonderboy, SMACKS of Snake Secondary). However, I do think it’s worth investigating Nick’s primary a little more deeply, because it will also illuminate his enneagram for us. There is a significant correlation between the Slytherin Primary and The Enneagram 8 personality type (I will probably write a longer post dedicated to these kinds of correlations in the future). 8′s are self-reliant to a fault, and are very selective about who they trust. They want to clearly divide the world into my people/not my people. They’re known to test others before letting them in (bully them even) because they don’t trust easy and fear being hurt! This behaviour comes from their core fear of being vulnerable/harmed/powerless.  A lot of people think Nick is a 7 (most fox characters get typed as ENTP 7′s), but 7′s core fear is deprivation/confinement/FOMO.  That’s not really Nick, he’s not looking to distract himself from internal emptiness/deprivation by seeking external stimulation like a 7. He is driven by his fear of vulnerability, like an 8.  His core fear/backstory is quintessentially 8: He was open and innocent, and the world hurt him. That's why he advises Judy "never let them see they get to you." All the scheming and grifting isn't because he wants treasure and pleasure (Think of like the Flynn Rider stereotype--surrounded by enormous piles of money!)--Poor Nicky just wants control over his destiny in a society/system that is hostile to his species. I also think 8′s perhaps unfairly stereotyped reputation for anger/aggression dovetails really nicely with the demonization of predators in the movie Zootopia.  Nick also has the classic 8 behaviour of poking at Judy's vulnerability, testing her, kind of bullying her, and she always responds with steel in her spine. That's classic 8 bonding, expressed through his teasing Snake Secondary (which he might share with Judy actually, since they seem to bond over Snake Secondary gamesmanship/outwitting one another, while their Primaries stick their tongues out at each other). In terms of his instinctual subtype, Nick Wilde is a sly, cynical self reliant self pres 8, again, similar to Megara from Hercules. This self pres subtype of 8 tend to vibe as chiller and more 5ish. For more detail please read an excerpt from Beatrice Chestnut about the cooler, 5ish self pres 8: "The driving need of Self-Preservation Eights can be described as an exaggerated ability to take care of themselves and find ways to meet their needs. In their focus on fulfilling their needs, they demonstrate a kind of exaggerated selfishness. They feel omnipotent in being able to satisfy and meet any need, and they disqualify any feeling, person, idea, or institution that opposes their desires. They will go against whatever. These Eights are characters who know how to survive in the most difficult situations and how to get what they want from other people. Naranjo sometimes refers to Self-Preservation Eights by the name “Survival,” because they excel at generating the material support they need to survive and satisfy their desires. Self-Preservation Eights know how to do business—according to Naranjo, they know how to barter and bargain and get the upper hand over anybody. Because they are strong, powerful, direct, and productive, they may generate dependency in others who come to rely on their control and protection. I might go back and add my MBTI thoughts later, but he just seems like a pretty obvious ENTP to me (though I could be convinced he’s an XSTP), so I’m not as interested in convincing anyone.

The One Where We Give An Overview of the Enneagram

For today's blog post I wanted to talk about the Enneagram.

It seems like everyone has their thing when it comes to personality tests/descriptions - whether it be Myers-Briggs, horoscopes, the color test, etc.

My thing is DEFINITELY the Enneagram. I've developed a habit of regularly guessing the people in my life's "type" and convincing people to take the test. I first took the Enneagram a year and a half ago. I now know that my result at the time was skewed because I was in intense turmoil - more on that later. We then dived into the Enneagram as part of my RYT200 training and I became very fascinated with it. Most recently, I gave a Lunch & Learn presentation at work on the Enneagram.

Before we really dive in - a few quick notes:

I am NOT an Enneagram coach. This is a real thing and there are people out there but this is purely just a passionate hobby of mine.

What exactly is the Enneagram?! Whelp, it's a personality test. But it also has been around a LONG time and has entire institutions devoted to studying it. It is based around 9 "types," has "growth/stress paths," "wings," and "centers," and "healthy/unhealthy levels". These are a lot to get into but are essential in truly understanding who you are in relation to the Enneagram, so my current plan is to get into them in specifically dedicated posts.

It should be noted that it is "common to find a little of yourself in all nine of the types, although one of them should stand out as being closest to yourself. This is your basic personality type." Most of the major Enneagram authors agree that we are all BORN with a dominant type - so nature rather than nurture when it comes to the enneagram. Other important things to note include:

Types are gender-neutral; no difference for male vs. female.

People don't change types. Growth and stress paths can get confusing with this BUT people's basic type is their basic type forever.

The numbers on the Enneagram are value-neutral - no type is "worse" or "better" than the other.

I highly, highly, highly encourage you to take the test. Personality tests can seem trivial, but the Enneagram is important in how we relate to others. It helps us empathize with other's motivations, realize our own patterns and motivations, and be more in-tune with others.

Sleeping At Last!!! Their band released an "Enneagram" album - they wrote a song for each type. It will PROBABLY make you cry when you listen to your type's song. They also have a podcast. Type 8w9 INFJ Female: The Glass Box and Getting Up

To sum up what it’s been like being a daughter of God typed as an Enneagram 8w9 INFJ, there are glass ceilings and walls that have boxed me in (sexism and sexual harassment in a male dominated traditional industry such as investment finance.  Many men feel good about themselves for esp dominating a dominant woman or on the other hand, undermining a smart capable woman.  “Don’t work so hard or you’ll make us look bad” said a senior 50 something year old male manager to me once.  “I’m sorry I didn’t support you like I should I have” said one my other former managers.  “You handled it well” said another male manager, referring to his physical micro aggressions and verbal condescending remarks to me about my work and experience.   Coupled by my love for Jesus, I am unwilling to play deceitful political games, drinking my face off in alcohol or inhaling cocaine which is commonplace in my industry.  So you can see that my career is stunted which it was.  And I have decided to leave it for good as well.  Now I am almost 40, half way through life, 140k+ student debt, entering a second half of life that won’t even come close to a bill of health comparable to the first half.

Control - ahh control.  How does one then respond to the external forces which restrict and punish you for being a capable woman? How do you adjust to being able to absorb “unexpected” circumstances that are outside of your control?  

This sounds crazy but I’m pursuing van life.  Why?  Because it gives me control to have a steady home life, and to be able to pursue meaningful ways to earn a living.  Van life - because it keeps my expenses super low, I’m not constrained to political high pressure sexist jobs, and I can be anywhere in the US, where opportunities are instead of being eliminated for jobs I’m qualified for just because I’m not a local candidate.  

I can tell you being a single, type8w9, 40 year old female soon living in a converted van is a difficult conceptual pill to swallow.  The closer it becomes a reality the more sad I become that someone like me who is an educated, hard working person of integrity has been punished. You are not rewarded in the secular world because of your Christian values, nor are you generally desirable on paper even in the modern Christian world for being strong willed, opinionated and seemingly dominant in the eyes of Christian male prospects (which is unfair because healthy 8s are actually strong followers if they respect you, believe you are capable, and see you as someone we can trust to do the right thing.  Then,  I am very comfortable and totally willing to relinquish control to).  Ha! But who will care about being seen as desirable by a dominant female who has chosen to exit her field which can be perceived as reckless, has student debt, living full time in a soon-to-be souped up converted van.  Very few.  This means your pool of men is small.  That is the reality of things.  

Thank God for Ecclesiastes that it’s all meaningless.  So Eat, drink, do work that you love, pursue wisdom, love God first, and love others.  To the young girls out there who are 8s, life will be very hard for you.  You will suffer and you will definitely feel alone.  Trapped and penalized for innate positive qualities because you are a woman.  Your reward and advancement is limited in the secular world as a Christian (why?  Simply because there are moral boundaries the secular world is willing to exceed that an actively Jesus loving God fearing person is not.  The exception is if you are gifted in playing the political game maintaining the innocence of a dove but shrewdness of a snake.)

And then within the modern day Christian Church, you will have a hard time finding a man who can lead you well.  Emphasis on “well.”   But whoever he is, he’ll be stronger than most men, kinder hearted than most men, have greater integrity than most men and smarter than many, because you yourself are an example of those things more than the other types, setting the bar extremely high.  Once you can trust someone to be/do these things, then you’ll feel comfortable following him and relinquishing control. He has to love God first then you as his wife second.

Anyway, in a nutshell, it’s hard being a female type 8 INFJ.  It’s gonna suck bad in many aspects of life.  I don’t know what God has in store for me.  But I do know, I will eat, drink, love the work I do, pursue wisdom, love God first, love others.  I surrender -  I am giving in, not giving up.  This is standing up again.
