I mean… if Tumblr is actually dying, then… what’s harm in unbanning porn and porn art? What’s gonna happen?
Worst case scenario, advertisers leave the site, and Mastercard & Visa start blocking payments. The site dies just like it otherwise would’ve. The same outcome, but at least they tried. Now all the Tumblr users know how unsuccessful their pleas for porn actually would’ve been and Matthew is proven right once and for all.
Best case scenario, artists actually come back to the site. The influx of content and users gives Tumblr its positive reputation back and puts it back on the map as the Twitter exodus continues (and TikTok’s second ban date looms). The TikTok-given popularity of the site only increases. Tumblr gets back on its feet. Premium features start selling well because new users have a more positive opinion of the site and are more willing to give it money. Advertises want dash space. Real advertisers. Those good mainstream ones. No longer the porn giant it was in the 2010s, the risk of Mastercard or Visa stopping payments is unlikely. Tumblr finds financial stability and heads toward sustainability.
So the two options are “what was always gonna happen” and “success.” Tumblr quite literally only has room to go up, financially. How Automattic can look at artists on other platforms desiring to return to Tumblr and social media users across the internet constantly being displaced and not try to appeal to them in any meaningful way is beyond me.
You can give the site a new UI all you want. The UI isn’t the problem. The brand image and community trust are. Tumblr can’t expand its userbase because it acted hostilely towards its userbase in the past and continues to do so in many ways, today. Ask any Tumblr user what they think of Tumblr’s management and their opinion is likely negative. That energy and stigma makes its way into the minds of new potential users, too. If Automattic wants to see this platform have success, they’re going to have to repair their relationship with the existing userbase, so they can begin building one with new potential users, as well.
And until artists and trans people feel comfortable on this website, that ain’t gonna happen.

A rant about scrolling, changing UI and changing mediums of visual entertainment arts
Tldr: i dislike change and scrollable formats, i feel like converting graphic mediums is disrespecting the original and i might have some sort of diagnosis for feeling like this
So i have not been watching anything on netflix for a few months now and when i came back i was appaled by the new ui. It's just so much worse than before. Why do i have to scroll through my library in single file like a fucking idiot? I have probably 50+ shows and movies on there, do you really expect me to sit there with the stupid ass remote scrolling for 10 minutes to find my show? Give me my gallery style back. It was so much easier to find stuff and manage your library. Not to mention that i need to scroll up to the top to go to another category instead of just going one row up/down and then to the left to my sidebar. Now in the new dumbass fucking ui version you have to go through 6 identical rows of bullshit to get from "movies" to "tv shows" or "my list" or god forbid you try to search something...
I will now go on a tangent...
But i HATE how everything is made to be scrollable these days. This is a scrollable design. Before it was kinda scrollable now it's ONLY scrollable. I really don't think that's ok. I also dislike how some stuff is changing format to be scrollable, like webtoons. Specifically i hate the change of format. Yes, you can call me an "old man yelling at cloud" but visual art has it's intents and purposes and as VISUAL art relies heavily on the VISUAL ASPECT of the thing. For example... (people already hate me for it) Fullmetal alchemist webtoon edition. I understand people like color and that someone likes webtoons over manga but there is something so wrong to me in disassembling someones work which was made with one intention and making it into something else. Manga has rules and panel placement and design on the page has a huge impact in how you read it. Pages make it so you don't jump to thr next panel/part of story that the author does not want you to see just yet maybe and double page spreads have a huge impact because the pages ARE such a limiting factor. Taking all that effort to make it fit in a page and then dissolving it to one panel per your whole phone screen (where most of the screen is probably white or some color) is insane to me. I just don't understand it.
And vice versa. Printing webtoons in comic book format is also weird to me because you, again, disassemble and reasemble the work made for one format to fit another. I've read Lore Olympus and bought the first book because i wanted to own it in print but when i got it somethinh just felt off. I remember scenes in that that i had to scroll 3 phone lenghts to see whole and i don't know how you print that in a book. What, 3 pages, 4, 5? Just the top or bottom part of two like a long strip flipped hirizontal? Do you cut it? What's the plan here? It's just not the same to me. If i had a way to print scrolls i would print webtoons in scrolls. Because that's the way they were meant to be read. If there are rules i want them to be followed and it's very frustrating to me to see them not followed.
I love webtoons (even tho scrolling to read makes me nauseous sometimes) and i love manga and comics... but i love them for what they are BECAUSE of the mediums they were made in. People are ok with the statement that some manga can never be properly adapted to anime or books to tv shows or games to tv and vice versa for all of these but the second i say i don't think you should do that for manga and webtoons people go batshit and call me a hater. A hater of change, a hater of long strip format, a hater of webtoons... maybe i am, and maybe you just don't want to talk about it so you just call me names.
In the end (if anyone read this) if you are someone who reads manga/comics on your phone, pc, ereader or whatever in the way that all your pages are in one long strip and you scroll from page 1 of a chapter to page 26 of a chapter in a long, mangled, manga page human caterpillar style... please tell me why. And if someone has later volumes of Lore Olympus and knows what i was talking about earlier, do tell me how they printed those long scenes in the books.

Since Tumblr wants to play its shitty little UI game and ruin my blog aesthetics with mandatory circular profile icons, I say game on: I added some extra dead space around my icon to preserve the transparency effect, and all is well. Vive la transparence!
