Currently Reading: this year hasn't been a great one for reading. Work has been so busy that I don't really have the mental capacity for it? I've got months of hp fanfic to catch up on and a veritable mountain of firstprince fanfic now that I've finished the book. I started Dead Wake by Erik Larson (about the sinking of the Lusitania) on the plane a few weeks ago, so I guess you could say I'm currently reading that (even though I haven't picked it up since). Still hasn't stopped me from buying 3 more books since then, though 🤡

Currently Watching: ahahaha so uh, lately I've been watching Bluey while I eat meals. Today I watched like 11 episodes over lunch? And cried through at least 7 of them in a row? It's just so fucking wholesome and so so healing.

Last Thing I Wrote: I'm constantly writing reports for work (boring answer). The last bit of fic I wrote was circuit breaker back in May, and it involved far too much research for only 458 words.

Currently Writing: unfortunately nothing. I've got a half dozen fics started that have been languishing in my docs and haven't been touched in over a year. I would love to say it's my entry for the HP Pumpkin Spice Fic Fest, but I haven't even started brainstorming yet 🙃

Give me Peter Parker (002) for the ask game!

I'm going to talk about Peter Parker from the movies, especially Tom Holland's Peter Parker because I have never read his comics or played his games... Let's go!

What I love about him is that he is relatable to me: just a teenager committing mistakes, the pressure over going to college by everyone surrounding him, the hormones, and his love life while trying to save his neighborhood and his loved ones by keeping his identity a secret.

I had to admit I started shipping him with Liz in Homecoming but now it is always and forever MJ! In fanfic, oh God, I have shipped and read so many of him with many others like Stark, Loki and Deadpool... The list goes on and on!

His relationships with the other Avengers are my non-romantic OTP, especially with Steve, Natasha, Sam, and Bucky. I'm sure they would see him as a little brother and would do everything to keep him safe!

My unpopular opinion - but not so unpopular in the fanfics fandom I guess - is that Peter is Bisexual or at least I want him to be to explain some theories in my head and to be even more relatable to me somehow

I wanted to know if Skip - the only thing from his comics I know - was real to Peter or not and that's one of the reasons he became Spiderman, on top of Ben's death of course. And this would be also my headcanon fact because, unfortunately, I think it truly happened to him!

He and MJ at the movies - they are endgame - and he is an adult and Stark in fics!

I don't have any crossover ships with him as far as I can remember...

Zilu and Mier are my second favorite OTP in The Rebel Princess, so here more details from the book.

Unfortunately Huan Mi is already dead in the book, but she's still a shadow in Zilu's heart and he hold a grudge for rest of his life because of their separation.

They have always loved each other since childhood (sorry Zitan, you have been overshadowed even in childhood love).

Zilu has always been a frail and sick guy since childhood, but mysteriously in the year of Wang Su's marriage his health got worse. He fell severely ill. Wonder why.

After recovering from his illness, Zilu became cold and distant to everyone, he no longer smiled even to Awu.

So Zilu's health was bad, but he had a clever mind. After Mier's death he became more and more silent and lonely. In that year he has lost his grandmother too, the only relative who regarded him because of his illness. He was buried in books and scrolls all day long, and he never left the palace.

Instead Huan Mi wasn't a great beauty, but she had her own grace and she was very good in playing musical instruments. This detail attracted me a lot. This girl wasn't a powerful beauty like Awu, but still with her own grace, charm and pure affection has conquered a prince's heart forever.

Awu reminds her as a cold and reticent woman and she never saw her smile. Mier almost spent her days behind closed doors and sometimes she played a qin. Half a year after the wedding, she got a severe cold and died from illness. Sure her depression didn't help her health.

Sadly we know Huan Mi's character from Awu and Turnip's pov, and even Turnip describes her as a very cold woman. But he was describing their first meeting and his desire to court her. And sure Huan Mi didn't want to waste her time with Turnip when she had Zilu in her mind and heart. Turnip said that she didn't pay attention to him, she didn't care about him at all, but this cold snobbery aroused his competitive spirit. (Yeah somehow Awu's bro is a womanizer.)

Yet Huan Mi was not impressed. Turnip even made a bet with Zilong in order to conquer her!

He didn't know about her love for Zilu, though. But Zilong did! What a shitty brother.

Sadly Wang Lin organized the marriage like in the cdrama, the dream of these two tragic lovers was broken, and Huan Mi has become silent and depressed like her soulmate. Both of them lost their smiles because external forces teared them apart.

I like this Zilu's weak appearance and how Huan Mi has always really loved him in spite of everything.

And Zilu never had anyone since childhood, no mother, no real affection, except Huan Mi. I understand why he got so attached to her, she was the only one interested on him and not because of politcs involvement.

Their love was so pure!

Ah, the best kind of ask - the one that requires no effort to answer! Just kidding, it doesn't work like that, but still, isn't @madeleineengland the best? She would also very much like for everybody to go and read the book! Darling, this campaign of attrition is anything but subtle. Or should I rather say that you are being as subtle as Xiao Qi with the Re-do Wedding?

Ahem, back to Zilu and Huanmi. The drama really treats its secondary characters well, doesn't it? Eh, maybe except for General Wei, who got a downgrade in terms of sheer badassery. But then again, he did score a Very Awesome Mom in the adaptation, so it's not like he got completely shafted!

As moving as Zilu and Huanmi's story is in the book - and let's face it, its best parts are hidden between the lines - I am so glad we got to see them as independent characters and most importantly, both alive. A framework of flashbacks and nothing but would have been just as limiting as book!Awu's rather narrow Point of View. Also, Huanmi gets to be an active character rather that just, pardon my French, a fridged excuse for Zilu going off the rails. Open the refrigerators! And guess what, having Huanmi alive moves the plot forward even better, oh my, who could have known.

Why I like them:

Uhhhh A Lot Of Reasons. Like. A lot. BUT I will be brief and say I like him because as a kid I always thought he looked cool and I always thought his first fight with Goku was radical. With My Big Man Brain Now I love him for just how sincere of a guy he is? And how loving and friendly and supportive? And I make fun of him for it but the wolf aesthetic genuinely is really cool- not to mention how he loves to change up his outfits and hairstyles!

Why I don’t:

I have no reason to hate this man. Like none exists. In The Most Platonic Way Ever he’s literally the perfect man and I would take him home to meet my mom and even then she would be happy with me dating a man if it was Yamcha Dragon Ball.

I have so many favorite Yamcha moments and ergo episodes good god help me BUT I will name ONE off the top of my head so I’m not stuck here forever and I really love the baseball scene in Z for Many Reasons it’s just so good it plays on loop in my brain 24/7 so I Will Say episode 10 of DBZ :)

If he’s ever portrayed as a flirt towards women, I can give it the smallest pass in the world that he’s trying to cope but even then that’s such a stretch in my opinion- and I guess this is on top of being a headcanon but Frankly I don’t think Yamcha’s ever even kissed anyone- he’s playing the long game everyone he’ll get his kiss on his wedding day btw that’s like. Partially a joke; I joke around a lot that Yamcha’s Super dedicated to the whole Nothing Until Marriage idea lmao.

Again I Have A Lot Of Reasons BUT I love how like. Deceiving he is as a character. Like ask anyone and 90% of the time people will say Tien’s smart and serious and No Bullshit but no he is exactly the opposite he’s dumb as shit in any department outside of farming and fighting and he’s such a lil’ jackass when breathing next to Yamcha. 

Sincerely though, I absolutely love his character development- it’s one of my favorite arcs in Dragon Ball to be honest but That’s An Essay For Another Time. I also love how funny he can be, intentionally or not, and he’s surprisingly really relatable at times? And just his dedication to fighting’s really neat too; at this point he MUST know he can never be stronger than Goku but he still tries nevertheless and that’s really indicative of his bullheaded personality.

Why I don’t:

You could not pay me to dislike him I’d sell my kidneys for Tenshinhan.

Any episode from the gang’s escapades on King Kai’s planet good lord save me. That’s where Tien’s existence shines the best it’s so good.

TMA S2 Natter I guess!!

under the cut for massive major spoilers of course

- I’m really glad I’m binging this, it helps me remember things to have a big chunk of story and lots to pick up on all stacked together and reinforcing itself. I still have to check and double check the Fan Wiki for names here and there, when I hear someone I KNOW I recognize from earlier; I’ve inevitably run across some spoilers that way, thanks to the structure of the wiki, so I’m really glad I’m needing to do that less and less as the show goes on; I don’t think I had to check anything in the last ten episodes, thought I did still have to go to the wiki to get links to the Transcripts, because 

- I find the tunnel-echo effects make the dialogue pretty unparseable no matter how loud I have the show, unfortunately. I could understand Michael,and not much else. (I mean,I could understand Michael’s voice, the Spiral’s motives and all are fairly opaque to me still.) The voices and acting lend so much ambiance, I would have been happy to watch along on the YT vid with subtitles , but it doesn’t have subtitles? Frustrating, but I do  really appreciate there being transcripts! 

- Michael makes me really, really sad. He was just a kid who stayed out in the rain a second too late! It wasn’t even his idea! And he got Marked and he lost his whole damn life to this thing before he was even old enough to have a good grasp on what reality is in the normal swing of things. Poor kid. Poor Michael-that-should-have-been. (ETA so I don’t answer this multiple times: I’m aware Lightning-and-Tower Michael might not be Hallways and Hands Michael, but this is just name-association, really.  Also, there’s a growing horror in S2 in finding so many people who seemed to escape their encounters showing  up again in much worse shape in other Statements...)

- Thanks to Tumblr Osmosis , I’m  sure the Endgame OTP (at least so far) in Jon/Martin, and while I’m currently not a fan of that (though totally prepared to change my mind according to character/relationship development!) I am  delighted to be able to enjoy Jon and Basira’s relationship without worrying that her character is going to be suddenly smashed flat to make her The Love Interest. I love their weird uneasy alliance!  I hope she comes back but also hope she goes somewhere Far Away and lives Ordinarily Ever After. 

-on that note, Daisy Daisy Daisy bring back Daisy, I don’t usually get into cop characters but WEIRD CRYPTID FORCE COPS are apparently a potential weakness for me  (..also I know, I know  they are probably Hunt-aligned. I’ve already said I’m unfortunately Weak for The Hunt ).

- Tim is seriously the only person in this whole damn institute with any self preservation either supernatural or normal??  “Yeah you’re right I don’t like the boss who stalks me and keeps secrets about a situation which is directly about my own personal safety like I was the enemy and takes his trauma out on me directly while I’m recovering from,in this case , exactly the same trauma thanks “

-honestly the apparent connection between why the Institute/Elias accepted Martin as sacrifice an employee and Martin’s emotional Everything is both screamingly apparent and worth an essay all on its own , that’s some Good Charactering

-I never trusted Elia-- Never Trust the Boss Of Shadowy Organization With Mysterious Backers, that’s my motto-- but HE KILLED THE INFODUMP SOURCE. HOW DARE. INSTANT LEAST FAVE.

- I KNEW LEITNER WAS A RESEARCHER I KNEW IT I KNEW IT, who has a vast occult library BUT never really figures in any accounts of actually DOING anything?? AN OCCULT NERD DOING RESEARCH.  (I say, well aware that *I* did not do my research as fully as I’d like here, to avoid spoilers, and thus may be forgetting a Big Thing he apparently did)

- I did NOT know he was still alive?? and totally didn’t see him working with Gertrude (it was actually Gert’s Occult Book Hunting that made me slap my head and go OH RIGHT about Leitner!) 

-I want to know more about Gertrude 

- The OH NO moment I had during Leitner’s description of obvious multiple entities working together to just wreck his shop!!  BAD, BAD, THE INJUSTICE LEAGUE OF AAAAAH IS BAD 

- also now I know for sure that the Web and the Stranger are enemies? this puts at least 2/3 Fear Entities that could, I am aware , pretty much have me as a pawn for a cheap ice-cream cone allied against the one  Entity that makes me absolutely go into Screaming Phobia Murder Mode, I don’t know if everyone’s feeling the same way or if this is just the show happening to find my particular keys like that 

-...listen Elias is THE WORRRRSSSST and I am sure The Institute is Not Good but if The Stranger existed and was A Thing like this then they wouldn’t have  to Play me to get my assistance on taking it out , every single episode about it makes me go Mad Raccoon in A Box ,  I want it gone, the enemy of the Stranger is my ...slightly less enemy 

-Jonnycakes Sims is the Avatar of the Human Trainwreck, but I did not realize until this episode that he does not drink coffee??  I’m torn between thinking he should and thinking all caffeine should be taken away from him forever. 

-Also, Dammit, Jonet, this “keeping info about supernatural horror schemes from my team For Their Own Good” nonsense?  BAD , you are not a Victorian patriarch and they are not your children, GIVE THEM A FIGHTING CHANCE YOU GOOBER, DID YOU EVER READ ONE GOTHIC NOVEL, IGNORANCE IS DEATH

Yes, I do. It was the pilot episode lmao

Nope. I started reading a fic about them a few years ago, but stopped after the first chapter. I guess I didn’t connect to the fanfic versions of them, so I’ve never tried again. Maybe because I felt they were already perfect and canon didn’t need any ‘improvement’? idk.

Uhm, once maybe? I can’t remember.

4. If 7 were to suddenly break up today, what would your reaction be?

Well, they actually didn’t end up together in the show, they were only a couple for a very short time, but yeah, even though I was sad about it, I eventually accepted it, because it was the right thing for Rae in that moment.

5. Why is 1 so important?

Because they make me feel things no other couple has ever made me feel. They were two fucked up kids who needed love and understanding, two fucked up kids who fell in love in the darkest place. They are two men who know and understand each other in ways that no one ever could. They never gave up on each other, they could never be apart, their love is so strong it overcame time, distance, heartbreak and even two boyfriends lmao. They complete each other, they’re the actual definition of soulmate and I think no one deserves happiness more than they do. Plus, I kinda feel very very protective of them, I would literally protect them with my life if ever needed. Last but not least, they’re the OTP who made me fell in love with fanfiction. In fact, I only read Gallavich fics and I could never imagine my life without them anymore. 

6. Is 9 a funny ship or a serious ship?

I would say funny, because Patrick would always tease her or try to make her smile, but he was also dealing with the trauma of losing his wife and daughter, so it wasn’t always sunshine and rainbows between the two of them.

7. Out of all the ships listed, which ship has the most chemistry?

Ian x Mickey and Damon x Elena. Hands down. (s1-s5 Delena, at least)

8. Out of all your ships listed, which ship has the strongest bond?

I’m gonna cheat and say Gallavich, Delena and Claire x Jamie. I could never choose just one, because well, Damon was willing to wait for Elena for 60 years and more (and he really did until Elena finally woke up); Claire and Jamie reunited after 20 years and never stopped loving each other, not even for a day; Ian and Mickey’s bond is so strong that literally nothing could tear them apart. So yeah, I’ll go with these three!

9. How many times have you read/watched the 10’s fandom?

Uhm, Delena I guess? They became human again and we were shown that they remained together until the day they died.

They went through a few ups and downs, but the worst break up was in season 2 when Wade cheated on her.

Definitely Damon and Elena, they were supernatural creatures themselves after all, so at least they’d be prepared lol

Rae did hide it, for a while. She was too embarrassed to be seen next to Finn, because of all her insecurities and low self-esteem :(

Let’s just say there were... many external factors lmao. Clark’s initial fear of hurting her, Lana marrying Lex, Clark becoming a jerk when exposed to red kryptonite, and finally... the Beast itself, green kryptonite. I don’t remember precisely how, but Lana finds herself sort of trapped in a suit made of green kryptonite, and that’s obviously the death of her relationship with Clark, since they literally can’t stay near each other and are forced to say goodbye.

Shh, Giulia, it’s fine. It’s been a long time, you’ll get over this.

18. Which ship would you defend to the death and beyond?

Ian and Mickey. I love all the ships I mentioned, but Ian and Mickey are my children, I will always choose them over anyone and anything. Seriously, don’t touch them.

Unfortunately there are very few pages that post about QAF and Brian x Justin nowadays, but the answer is yes, I would.

Character-Clow Reed

Why I like them:

for all my angry yelling and kicking and complaining you may be surprised to learn that clow(riol) is one of my favorite parts of ccs! 

i think that having the Mystery and Legend of a long-dead wizard that hangs over sakura’s head at the start get light shed on it more and more so that we can see he’s just a person makes the world of ccs feel small and personal. it really stabilizes the heart of the series, what i love most about ccs- that it’s a story about individuals and the choices they make. the magic itself all traces back to one man and the way he felt it was right to act and to treat other people. i think he’s a fascinating character and a very very good choice of central figure.

Why I don’t:

THAT SAID, AAAAAGHHHHH HE IS HORRIBLE HE IS JUST A TERRIBLE LITTLE MAN I HATE HIM I HATE HIM SOOOO MUCH. even putting aside everything he* pulls as eriol, just the things he does as clow reed make me SO upset....LYING ABOUT HIS DEATH??? ELABORATE SETUP TO PRETEND KERO AND YUE HAVE A CHOICE IN THE MATTER OF CHOOSING THE NEW CARD MASTER BUT ACTUALLY KNOWING ALL ALONG AND HAVING A SPECIAL MAGIC ITEM MADE TO SEE THAT IT GETS DONE??? BREEZING INTO A TOWN TO STEAL A FORTUNE TELLER’S BUSINESS, GETTING HER NICE AND KATE BEATON NEMESIS.PNG’D, AND THEN IGNORING HER FOREVER??? it’s bad!! *(it’s complicated,) ive said this jokingly before but i think he just doesnt even think about other people having agency, that he’s not trampling but Guiding and Helping. i think part of his controlfreakiness is also a deep fear that he’s not enough, that he can’t keep a friend on his own merits so he’s gotta get his claws sunk in as much as possible, whether by emotionally living rent free in people’s heads or magical dependance. and that’s not a uniquely horrible belief, yknow, i think it’s very human and normal, but the problem is no one can criticize him. not with the amount of control he has over the people he surrounds himself with, the fact that he can physically shut down kero and yue any time he likes, etc. it’s not that power inherently Makes You Evil, it’s that power made it harder for people to say “hey stop that”, and if no ones telling him to stop then he must be doing fine!

GENUINE TIE BETWEEN THE BACK TO THE PAST EP OF THE ANIME AND THE SAKURA SEES THE TRUTH SCENE IN MANGA. i think both of them are great- the tightly controlled dreamy guided tour where she sees just what he wants her to see, AND sakura outpowering him and seeing the reality of his lies. in the manga when sakura sees him gives gentle headkisses to kero and yue before putting them to bed and eriol+fujitaka-ing i go AUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH ....... THEY LOVE SOMEONE WHO IS TERRIBLE AAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUU MY HEART. i headcanon that’s when he mind-messed with them, too, i think he had to touch them to do it and that was how.

Favorite season/movie:

bold answer but im going to say the implications left behind in the clow card arc of Why Do Cards Act Like That/Have Those Specialties. what about clow made him want to make a voice-stealing card, a small-object-moving-card, a body-swap card, etc? it’s good questions.

in the mokona book when they say he said dogs dont have owners they have housemates, bc that explains SOOOOO much abt him and how he treated kero and yue lololol. if you think being a pet owner and a roomate are the same you’re gonna treat your roomates, uhhhm, bad.

im neutral-positive on clowyuuko cuz i havent holic’d since high school. you can refer to the answer i gave abt yue for clowyue thoughts (tl;dr: [touches ground] “something terrible happened here” ). madoushi is just kate beaton nemesis comic.

yuuko again i guess? and him and all his creations. headcanon territory even though that’s actually the next question but you asked for my thoughts so here they are: i think of him as trying to be a sort of fun camp counselor or teacher type for kero+yue and the cards- specifically a role with an authority behind it, but without the same sort of responsibility that a parent would have. or, i guess, lacking an unconditional love, always an undertone of you having to prove yourself. someone who you go to to learn from, but if he likes can also go “no no im just like you, now let’s have fun!”. it’s hard to explain, but there’s a difference. 

what i’m trying to get at here is i think it’s significant that the only creations he has that we see him truly ‘raise’, (going by the info+lack of it we have, anyway, i fill in the blank for myself that kero and yue and the cards all showed up full of knowledge, fully formed, CLAMP DO NOT INTERACT!!!!!), were the mokonas, with yuuko. it was another person’s influence that brought a parental attitude in, it’s not something he ever wanted to be. there’s also a healthy dose of “yue textually had a crush on clow and i will not, no way, let you make that any more unfortunate than that already is”, i’ll admit, but i think that’s just a puzzle piece of the whole theory here. i think it would also be funny if he knew people like tolkein (eriol’s a tolkeinverse name if i remember correctly) and c.s. lewis (side note, i find the fact that clow is an actively practicing christian really funny), but i dont want to think too deeply about that sort of realworld mix, yknow.

Head Canon: 

i think pranks were highly encouraged in his house and none of the clow cards are being intentionally destructive, just acting in ways that were totally normal at home, and are genuinely shocked to learn that people will get seriously injured without clow there to cushion their damage.

Favorite character: Ti’zo. I love him so much. Even have the plushie of him, too!

Least Favorite character: I was always meh about Hedwyn. I am not as enthusiastic about him as the rest of the fandom

Character I find most attractive: Sandra! That sass alone makes me swoon.

Character I would marry: Obviously my orb wife, Sandra. Even if she’s blind and/or trapped in an orb forever, we’d make it work.

Red/Blue

When I started shipping them: The second Blue did his whole, “You know I love you, right?” bit before Red went off to fight Royce

My thoughts: They are so tragic and warm and I just love them and want nothing but the best for them, despite their devastating ending :( I really love how the game doesn’t explicitly state at the beginning that they’re an item, yet when you replay, you notice all these little things that make so much sense. Like I was really prepared for Blue to be a villain somehow towards the end, so it was great to know it was actually someone incredibly close to Red.

What makes me happy about them: EVERYTHING???

What makes me sad about them: That canon ending :( they deserve so much better, yet it is a fitting ending for the game and their story

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: When Red is shown as someone soft and quiet in comparison to Blue. She’s the one who decided to stay in Cloudbank and fight the Process. She’s the one who made the “I’m going to find what did this to you and BREAK ITS HEART” comment. Girl is full of grit and vibrance and I get all :\ when people gloss over that.

Things I look for in fanfic: I love pre-canon goodness where they can be comfortable with one another. A little slice of happiness before their lives go to shit :(

My wishlist: I just want them to break free from recursion and live happily ever after in the Country.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: Sybil/Red for sure, but something healthy and reciprocated instead of the stalkerish stuff that’s in the game. I’m not sure who I’d picture Blue with. Maybe Preston or Farrah? He seems fond and respectful of both of them.

My happily ever after for them: The events at the Empty Set never happened, they never had to fight the Process, and then they live happily together, eating flatbread after concerts and stuff *cries forever*

Edea

How I feel about this character: I feel like she gets forgotten a lot by the fandom and the game. Like once it’s revealed Ultimecia was controlling her the whole time, she’s kind of thrown out the window, which is unfortunate, because she’s a central character for the main cast or at least the orphanage crew. I really enjoy her and wish there was more insight in regards to when Ultimecia controlled her or how she adapted to her life post-loss of powers or how she coped upon becoming a sorceress and learning Squall’s fate.

Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: I don’t really ship her with anyone. Hell, I’m not even big on her with her husband :\ that never felt like the best relationship. 

My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: Her and Rinoa! I’d love to see more with Edea mentoring Rinoa and turning into a mother-like figure for her.

My unpopular opinion about this character: I’m not sure I really have one? I just think she’s awesome and doesn’t get enough attention :\

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I MEAN, ANYTHING. She gets dropped so fast, so I’d be happy with any content. What does she do when she no longer has her powers? Does she mend the connections she fucked up? Does she still support Garden? Or her husband? I WANNA KNOW.

Favorite friendship for this character: Outside of Rinoa, I love her interactions with Squall.

My crossover ship: Hmm…. haven’t really put much thought into this. I could see her and Yunalesca from FFX getting along. Maybe even her and Morrigan from Dragon Age - give her a better mom role model, too.

Oh, nonnie, as if my love for Jon Snow could be distilled down to a single blog post. But I will try.

How I feel about this character: There’s an old theory from Idol fandom (okay it’s my theory, I came up with it) that you tend to take on the personality of the person you stan. It seems to me that GoT fandom kind of slants this sideways and most Jon Snow stans who are divorced from the wretched shipwars are aggressive den mothers who only seek to protect our boy at all costs (and this goes for Kit as well). Jon was a Stark boy through and through: he had the same noble, generous, purehearted, self-sacrificing, recklessly heroic blood that flowed through Ned and Robb’s veins and I loved him for it. Jon was never going to be that conniving, ambitious political mastermind that people keep trying to convince me that Book!Jon is: he was too good for that. He’s the prototype of the teevee boyfriend I always end up falling for: the grumpy man’s man who doesn’t seek attention or acclaim, who may seem like he hates everyone and everything but who is selfless to the core and will do anything for his loved ones. 

These attributes, of course, are not valued in Westerosi society: they got Ned, Robb, and Jon murdered. In the end, Jon remained true to the spirit of his Night’s Watch vows and sacrificed everything he had for the good of the realm: his lover, his title, his family, his reputation, any acknowledgement of the things he had helped accomplish and fight for. No good deed goes unpunished, and the ungrateful kingdom that had asked so much of him wasted no time in tossing him away. But the fates give, and the taketh away, and sometimes they give back: his heart’s desire was eventually delivered to him in the form of his punishment. His destiny was more than just a consort to whichever queen comes out on top, or an action figure whose only purpose in life was to vanquish that specific supernatural foe: he deserved to live a free, happy, and long life far away from the civilization that abused and disdained him.

Oh, and living a life completely free of politics with his outcast friends, best friend/lover and dog sounds like a perfectly blissful existence to me. In the end, Jon got the ending he deserved.

All the people I ship romantically with this character:

Jon/Tormund: I could write a thousand metas about how this is the show’s most functional and believable romance, but this post is already getting too long. Jon and Tormund started off as enemies on the opposite side of a war, but Jon gained Tormund’s trust and literall died to save his people: Tormund repaid that loyalty by fighting by Jon’s side for his wars not once but twice. Tormund is the only one to unconditionally love Jon and accept him after everything he’s done, and he was the one who waited at the Wall for Jon to come back to him. Jon wanted to reject both Winterfell and Kings Landing and run away with Tormund long before the final sacrifice was asked of him: unlike Jon’s other romances, they have fought on the same side for a long time and want the same life and future. Jon belongs in the wild with his giant ginger husband, and they will have a good life.

Jon/Ygritte: The ultimate doomed romance and the show’s best het romance. Nothing in respectable society made Jon as happy as he was with Ygritte.

Jon/Dany: Okay, I knew this was an epic disaster a million miles away and yet this stupid show made me ship it anyway. Even if Dany hadn’t turned out to be a mass-murdering lunatic, it was always doomed: she craved power and conquest and he hated those things. So yes, doomed, doomed, DOOMED in canon … but in AUs where things are twisted slightly enough to make things work, I do still enjoy it. But only in AUs.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: 

Up until that wretched council scene, I would say Jon/Sam. Sam Tarly is now dead to me. I don’t feel that way about Davos or Gendry or Yara or even Grey Worm, but I do feel that way about Sam. Sam knew about Jon’s heritage and warned him about Dany early on and actively encouraged him to break ties with her because of what she had done to his family, but when Jon is finally the one to take her down Sam isn’t willing to support or defend him. He doesn’t speak up for Jon’s claim, he doesn’t defend his actions, he doesn’t even argue against Jon’s execution. When Jon takes the fall for an act that Tyrion was equally conspired in and he is the one punished while Tyrion is placed back in charge and his brother is instituted as king instead, Sam not only doesn’t fight it but uses the situation to supposedly leapfrog over all the trained scholars above him to institute himself as Grand Maester (?) in Bran’s administration instead of honoring his vows to either them or the Night’s Watch. Oh, and I guess the celibacy requirement is excused for him, too, because while there’s wiggle room for a girlfriend and an adopted son, I’m pretty sure Gilly’s second pregnancy violated it.

It doesn’t seem fair, but now that I think on it, their friendship was mostly one-sided: Jon sacrificing and protecting, Sam needing to be protected. So yeah. Sam is forever ruined for me. Unfortunately, since Sam is supposedly GRRM’s stand-in I half suspect he’s not going to ask Sam to keep to any of his vows and have him placed in a high-profile position he hasn’t earned in his version of events as well.

So I’m going to pick Jon/Arya here. I think that’s the only relationship Jon had with anyone besides Tormund that wasn’t sullied by the end. I have faith that Arya will steer her boat around in a few years and visit her brother again, despite the nonsensical assumptions of those script directions.

My unpopular opinion about this character: Jon was justified in killing Dany. She murdered thousands of innocent civilians and was prepared to murder more. By the middle of 8.05, I would have handed a knife to anyone who wanted to kill her, so I wouldn’t have minded if Jaime or Arya did it, either. The only thing I fault Jon for is in (temporarily) excusing her behavior. But I refuse to condemn him either for killing her or remaining conflicted about it afterwards.

My other unpopular opinion is that he actually got a happy ending with the only people who truly appreciated him. But I don’t think I’m alone on that one.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish that Jon had gotten credit for the things that he had accomplished, and that he hadn’t had to face nearly every person who used to trust him turn their backs on him. I wish he had chosen to go into exile instead of being forced there, even if he would willingly embraced the same fate. And I wish that we could have seen him established in Wildling society and to know that Jonmund was officially canon.

But in the end, I was less dissatisfied with his ending than I was with almost everything else, and it was what I cared about most. Jon ended up where he needed to be.

Unpopular opinionI dunno… Maybe my opinion that neither he nor Touwa has ever killed anyone? Though I know it’s mostly been forgotten, there were a lot of people saying that they had back at the beginning, and I really don’t think that’s the case, esp after his reaction w/ the Cheese Space Sisters. When confronted w/ actually letting someone die to adhere to their duties, he did lash out, but in the end couldn’t follow through and backed down. I feel like the only reason he was so willing to pull a sword on Ui was bc he’d never killed before. Taking a life is heavy, and its effects do not fade quickly, if at all, and the brothers are decent kids. It was either all talk (though he may have genuinely believed he’d do it), or he might have done it and immediately regretted it.DX Sorry. I rambled.

Unfortunately, he didn’t yet know how to use the magical toy sword of dino power, and came very close to hurting himself, had Master Red not caught him just in time. He got in a lot of trouble for that one.
