Suggestions for Inexpensive Volunteer Opportunities
By Azeez Ismail | National UN Volunteer, India
Introduction:
You don’t need an organization to serve society. You, as a single volunteer, are an NGO. You are already part of the world’s largest organization—the United Nations—as a National UN Volunteer. Own it. Represent it. Let the world know: “I am a National UN Volunteer.”
Volunteer Opportunities (Inexpensive & Impactful):
1. Be a Blessing Daily: Make every encounter meaningful. A kind word or genuine attention can transform someone’s day.
2. Weekend Teaching: Dedicate just two hours on weekends to teach children, especially those who lack guidance.
3. Record Audiobooks for the Visually Impaired: Use a good mic and your voice to open up the world of books for blind students—right from your home.
4. Support Educational & Livelihood Programs:
▪️Teach soft skills, language, computer literacy.
▪️Train youth and women to become employable.
5. Life Skills Through Sports & Arts: Volunteer with initiatives using sports, music, or arts for character-building in schools.
6. Support Public Institutions: Hospitals, shelters, and schools always need support. Customize your help based on your skills and time.
7. Blood Donation & Health Awareness: Join or organize blood donation camps and hygiene awareness drives.
8. Counseling & Awareness Drives: Educate on HIV, mental health, and personality development.
9. Share Creative Skills: Teach music, crafts, dance, or drawing to children in underprivileged communities.
10. Social Media Volunteering: Help organizations grow by managing their online presence and spreading their message.
11. Rural Development: Help in digital literacy, knowledge centers, and natural calamity relief projects.
12. Skill Training: Offer sessions in tailoring, computers, spoken English, or any job-oriented skill.
13. Identify Out-of-School Children: Create local campaigns to help them get back into classrooms.
14. Be a Listener: Sometimes, being present and listening is the greatest form of service.
15. Celebrate With the Forgotten: Share food, time, and love at orphanages, old age homes, and leprosy centers on special occasions.
16. Build a Volunteer Network: Start with a few like-minded people. Meet regularly and act together.
17. Promote Environmental Awareness: Plant trees, clean local areas, or support zero-waste practices.
18. Promote Child Adoption Awareness: Guide people on legal and safe adoption processes and support abandoned children.
19. Civic Awareness: Educate people about government departments and their functions.
20. Support Senior Citizens: Spread awareness against elder abuse and offer time or assistance.
21. Heal Family Bonds: Help bring harmony to broken relationships in your extended family.
22. Road Safety Awareness: Conduct campaigns to promote traffic discipline and safe driving.
23. RTI (Right to Information) Education: Teach others how to use RTI to demand accountability and transparency.
24. Pen Pals for Blind Students: Pair visually impaired children with writing assistants for exams and correspondence.
25. Health Emergency Preparedness: Teach basic first-aid and volunteer at health events like vaccination drives.
26. Empower Women: Support victims of domestic violence, dowry harassment, and gender discrimination.
27. Support Persons with Disabilities: Provide tools, training, and motivation to help them lead independent lives.
28. Health Camps: Organize or assist in free health check-ups and medicine distribution.
29. Support Vulnerable Kids: Focus on
▪️First-generation learners
▪️Single-parent families
▪️Economically disadvantaged children
▪️Kids from Grades 6–10 (high dropout risk)
30. Host Free Workshops Monthly: Topics can include:
▪️Basic learning
▪️Talent grooming
▪️Social responsibility
▪️Life skills
Final Thoughts:
Stop chasing NGOs that exploit your potential for profit. You are enough. Save just 2% of your annual income—Rs. 2000 for every Rs. 1 lakh—and do charity directly. Give by your own hands. Let your service carry the name of your parents, ancestors, or teachers. Make your giving personal and powerful.
Avoid unnecessary expenses on meetings, conclaves, and conferences. Use those funds for real impact. Remember, charity is not just a deed—it’s a legacy.
God bless you.
Serve with love. Rise with grace.

WHO: Ready for the Next Outbreak
By: Scott Chin
新华通讯社 | Xinhua News Agency
World Health Organisation Council | 17 May
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has taken a crucial step forward in reinforcing global health security, as member states concluded productive sessions on 16–17 May focused on strengthening preparedness protocols for pandemics and epidemics. Through constructive dialogue and mutual understanding, nations reached a common ground on a five-point strategy to improve international response mechanisms and safeguard public health.
This development reflects the collective commitment of the global community to uphold the principles of solidarity, equity, and shared responsibility in facing future health emergencies.
The Five-Point Plan
The delegates proposed a unified five-point solution, marking a comprehensive and inclusive approach:
Development of Medical Infrastructure – Construction of mobile hospitals and centralised care facilities will be prioritized, especially in regions with limited resources, ensuring timely vaccine distribution and care.
Advanced Early Detection Systems – Supported by funding from the United States, these systems aim to build global capacity to monitor and contain health threats in real-time.
Community Education to Combat Misinformation – Public health knowledge will be disseminated through culturally sensitive channels, with deep respect for national traditions and social structures.
Deployment of Skilled Manpower – Signatory states (excluding the U.S.) will provide vital human resources to bolster international efforts during emergencies.
Investment in Higher Education – Funding and upskilling initiatives will expand the pool of trained healthcare workers, particularly in developing regions.
This framework embodies a cooperative spirit that prioritizes mutual benefit and regional balance.
Addressing the press’s concerns
During a press conference following the sessions, delegates responded to several important inquiries raised by journalists. The topic of financial sustainability was addressed with a robust plan: the World Bank will serve as the primary financier, complemented by equitable trade agreements to distribute costs fairly among nations.
In terms of educating local populations, the WHO will partner with respected local figures—such as religious and community leaders—to share health information in a manner that is appropriate and effective within each cultural context. This strategy demonstrates a deep respect for national sovereignty and social cohesion.
Responding to concerns about human resources, particularly from underdeveloped nations, delegates reaffirmed that investment in education and capacity building will empower all countries to contribute meaningfully to global efforts without compromising domestic healthcare systems.
To ensure standardized healthcare education, an International Council for Tertiary Medical Education has been proposed. This body will harmonize curricula and uphold global standards, while remaining sensitive to national educational frameworks.
Key Points From The Draft Resolution
The draft resolution reflects broad consensus on implementing long-term, sustainable systems:
ICDRD (International Committee of Drug Reserves and Distribution) will manage global vaccine reserves and promote fair distribution through a transparent, quota-based system. Contributions will reflect each country's development status, and a trade-based model will enable more inclusive participation from economically constrained nations.
Global Surveillance and Early Detection System will use cutting-edge AI and shared data to enhance transparency and accountability, while also assisting developing countries in building regional pharmaceutical production chains.
Education and Public Awareness Campaigns will partner with local experts and NGOs to combat misinformation and raise health literacy, especially in rural and underserved areas. Online tools and regional health hubs will broaden reach and impact.
Logistics Support and Accessibility Initiatives will include drone technology and deployment of low-skilled labor to ensure rapid, far-reaching supply chains, enabling faster responses in future crises.

History: Born to a mother who was hiding her status as a Mutant, Rowan's abilities manifested unexpectedly at two years old, causing her father to discover his wife and daughter were both powered individuals, and resulting in him disowning their both, walking out and never coming back. Fortunately, Rowan's mother was able to manage on her own despite this, and Rowan grew up in a happy home, admiring her mother's inner strength and aiming to live up to it someday.
As she grew up, technology developed at a high rate, and so did Rowan's ability to absorb knowledge. Able to use her powers to connect to the internet almost all the time, she learnt at a much faster rate than her peers, though she was advised by her mother to keep this fact to herself, and pursued education at a normal rate in order to avoid suspicion. Rowan and her mother took the time to ensure that she'd be able to keep her powers in check, and she also took the chance to research other areas as much as she could.
Her mother also made a significant decision - adopting the daughter of a close friend of hers, who had passed away in an accident. Rowan was initially hesitant about gaining a sibling, especially when she was still learning to get a good grip of her powers, but soon grew to love Lily with a quiet fierceness, sticking by her side and teaching her whatever new skill or cool fact she could get her hands on.
When she was 16, Rowan applied for an internship at the London branch of Stark Industries. Upon acceptance, she blossomed at the company, working on various software and design projects, though making sure to stay just under the radar to avoid any kind of friction. She even managed to make a few friends, despite developing a reserved attitude due to her concerns about being discovered.
Her life took a turn, however, when an experiment at the company went wrong, causing an explosion that sent a shard of glass into her throat. Whilst surgery successfully removed the shard, most of Rowan's larynx was severely damaged, resulting in her being unable to speak. In the midst of the accident, her powers also went on full display due to her panic, prompting the attention of one Tony Stark.
Initially suspicious of her abilities, but heeding good feedback from her fellow employees, Stark offered Rowan a deal - she could keep working at his company, as long as she relocated to the New York branch where he could keep an eye on her. She initially was nervous about the prospect, but took a chance and agreed, and over time, Stark has developed more faith in her skills and her commitment, and has slowly begun introducing her to his own world of craziness outside of Stark Industries.
Nowadays, after teaching herself sign language, and though still generally reserved in nature, Rowan is slowly breaking out of her shell and developing friendships that she never expected. She prefers to take a more background role, allowing others to do the more physical work while she provides information and external assistance, but she's also fiercely loyal, and will do her best to stand up for the people she's grown to care about.
In the middle of the regular chaos, however, new chaos is about to arise - Inhumans are beginning to pop up everywhere... and it turns out one of them is Rowan's own sister...
---
(Rowan's primary universe is Earth-12041, the Avengers Assemble/Ultimate Spider-Man universe. There are also AUs for other universes, however, and her backstory may change depending on what other universe she's being written in)

New Nurses and Managers: Organizational Analysis As the nursing profession evolves and rises to meet modern demands, we are faced with growing complexities in our profession and in our workplaces. From the orientation and socialization of new nurses and managers, to the selection processes for preceptors and mentors, to continuing education, to legal and ethical issues, the modern nurse is faced with complicated situations and elaborate organizations that require his/her continuing dedication. Organizational Analysis Professionalism Examining the concepts included in "professionalism": a profession is a vocation, usually involving science or a unique education; the heart of professionalism per se is twofold: a professional has a distinct type of knowledge and a self-imposed responsibility to serve the community (Donelyn, 2004, Slide 16). Applying those concepts to the Nursing Profession, professionalism is the continual pursuit of knowledge, a self-imposed sense of responsibility for human concerns, development through our unique education, accountability to our peers, professional autonomy and self-regulation, and altruism (Donelyn, 2004, Slides 21-31). In terms of work, professionalism includes: knowledge; competence; professional appearance; teamwork. In terms of the person, professionalism includes: respect for others; integrity; a positive attitude; compassion (Donelyn, 2004, Slide 36). b. The Orientation and Socialization of New Nurses and Managers " New nurse" orientation and socialization may take several weeks or months and usually occurs for the entire facility and the unit. Socially, orientation is when the new nurse becomes acquainted with all the new hires in his/her orientation group and with as many of his/her coworkers as possible. Educationally, Orientation is the time when the new nurse should learn all he/she can; this is important not only for practice but also for getting along with coworkers who will expect the new nurse to learn important basics during orientation. Orientation is the time to work out as many "kinks" as possible, so the new nurse should take advantage of the "nurse educator's" expertise, learn as much as possible and assume nothing: he/she should take and review notes and handouts; learn as much as possible about the facility's policies and procedures, including the facility's documentation policies; immediately ask as many questions as needed; immediately ask for additional help as needed; learn the location of the Policy & Procedural Manual and the Standard of Care Manual; learn to use any required computers and their programs; make mental notes of the location of important items and become so familiar with them that he/she can reach for them without looking; learn about the medication cart's layout and system, whether or not the new nurse is allowed to dispense medications; learn how medications are computerized, how to get newly prescribed medications and how to get STAT medications in case they are needed; learn how to obtain procedure trays and central supplies, how to charge patients for the supplies used by the new nurse, and how to obtain a new sterile tray in case the existing one is contaminated; learn any charge-off procedures, how to order lab work, x-rays and other tests, how to access the lab and test results, IV procedures and personnel, where the IV sets are kept. Finally, orientation is the time when new nurses are shown how to use certain types of equipment, how to work on clinical issues and the time when the new nurse may be checked off on procedures (Quan). Nurse Managers are educated in leadership and communication skills during their orientation. Some orientation programs for Nurse Managers have developed a checklist that is adapted to his/her experience level of management and organization. Those checklists are organized into sections such as: general information; human resources; process improvements (Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins, 2011). c. Selection Process for Preceptors and Their Formal Educational Program Preceptors are teachers or tutors who get new nurses ready and trained to work by ensuring that the new nurses' skills are up to par and ensuring that new nurses get a variety of patients so they are ready for whatever may come when they are on their own. (Briddon, 2008). An excellent description of the selection process for preceptors comes from Health Disciplines.ubc.ca. Preceptors are selected by: recruiting; selection from the pool of recruits and pairing/matching protocols. During recruiting, the selection committee lists the attributes of effective preceptors and preceptees, establishes a pool of acceptable candidates, selects the desired candidates, and then matches them with preceptees (Health Disciplines.ubc.ca, 2004). Other than the formal education required licensed nursing, their formal education program normally consists of workshops for first-time preceptors and refresher courses for experienced preceptors (Edmunds & Scudder, 2010). d. Mentoring for Managers and Staff Mentors are trusted counselors or guides who can be anyone in the new nurse's working unit but they are usually experienced and "well-seasoned" nurses. The new nurse's mentor may or may not also be the preceptor (Briddon, 2008). According to Health Disciplines.ubc.ca, mentors are chosen in the same way as preceptors are chosen. Formal education consists of a baseline of normal nursing education and licensing, plus classroom/internet/discussion opportunities (PB Works, 2009). e. Continuing Education Efforts for Staff and Managers One facet of continuing nursing education involves "Best Practice" issues sharing with staff. Exact procedures may vary from institution to institution but one effective method of issues sharing involves: contacting experts to discuss their recommendations of best practice; obtaining additional advice from national, state and local resource centers; discussing the issues with nursing colleagues to reach a consensus on the best practice for your facility's unique circumstances. There should also be support for formal continuing education in the forms of tuition reimbursement, grants, scholarships, government loan forgiveness under the Nurse Reinvestment Act of 2002, assistance in student loan repayment under the federal Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program, webinars and conferences and flexible scheduling (Allnurses.com, 2003), (American Nurses Association, 2011). f. Types of Development Afforded to Nursing Staff Leadership Nursing staff leadership is vigorously supported by the American Nurses Association, through leadership workshops, seminars, webinars, web site toolkits for effective communication and delegation of duties, a "Magnet Recognition" program and social networking (American Nurses Association, 2011). g. Organizational Support for Legal and Ethical Dimensions of Nursing Legal dimensions of Nursing are organizationally supported by ANA-PAC, The American Nurses Association's Political Action Committee, by supporting candidates for federal office who have demonstrated "belief in the legislative and regulatory agenda of the American Nurses Association" (American Nurses Association, 2011). In addition, individual nurses are organizationally supported by the ANA by defining and supporting a "Nurses' Bill of Rights regarding working conditions and the ability to freely "advocate for themselves and their patients" (American Nurses Association, 2011). Finally, nurses' ethical considerations are also supported by the ANA's efforts to maintain, refine and explain the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements (Nursingworld.org, 2011). h. Process for Managing Ethical Dilemma Identified by Nursing Our code of ethics gives a methodical, practical framework for ethical decision-making as we perform our healthcare duties. First, we must identify the ethical issue; then we must clarify our personal and professional values, using the professional code of ethics, with our interpretation and position reflecting our underlying value system. The next step is to clarify the influencing factors or barriers, gathering information from professional literature, applying at least the first 4 principles of W.D. Ross' prima faci theory: respect for autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence and justice. While using prima faci, we must define our guiding principles, following the professional code of ethics whenever possible. Our next step is to analyze the alternatives, knowing that usually at least 2 courses of action will develop and examining each argument for and against each action plus their outcome and checking for the validity of the each argument. We must also find common ground, knowing that dilemmas may lead to disputes, that communication is important, and that our strategies for finding common ground may include collaboration, compromise, accommodation, coercion and avoidance. The next step is to decide and act, ideally with consistency between personal values and the values of others, consistently with legal and professional standards, and aware of the guiding principles behind the decision to justify our decision. After acting, we must assess the outcome, evaluating both the process and the results, and learning from the experience to improve our approach to ethical dilemmas. While taking every step of this decision process, we are to remain aware that the code of professional conduct is the guide that directs, coordinates and assists us day-to-day; consequently, we are to consistently abide by the code while respecting our patients' autonomy and dignity. Each ethical issue is unique and the code offers specific actions for several ethical dilemmas. For example, Section 3.6 of the Code addresses the steps a nurse must take to protect "the patient, the public and the profession from potential harm when a colleague's practice…appears to be impaired" (Nursingworld.org, 2011). In that situation, the nurse should begin by consulting supervisors and may also confront the impaired colleague. The Code encourages nurses to follow policies and guidelines laid out by the facility. If the workplace has no such policy or the policy is inappropriate in that it denies due process to the impaired colleague, the nurse may seek guidance from a professional association, state peer assistance programs or employee assistance programs (Nursingworld.org, 2011). 3. Conclusion During its nearly 150-year history, nursing has remained faithful to the dictates of professionalism. However, the profession has also evolved so significantly in terms of our responsibilities and the measures taken to fulfill them that Florence Nightingale would hardly recognize us. The profession constantly adopts and adapts to meet the needs of our patients and the community while remaining faithful to our vocation, and will continue to do so in order to meet the unfolding duties that we willingly accept. Basic structure and control method of LED electronic display screen
As an efficient information display tool, LED electronic display screen is widely used in advertising, transportation, sports and other fields. Its basic structure and control method are the keys to achieving efficient and clear display. The following is a detailed introduction to the main components of the LED electronic display and its control methods.
Screen structure
The screen body of the LED electronic display is the core part of displaying information, and is mainly composed of display lattice, row and column drive circuits and other auxiliary circuits. The display dot matrix is usually composed of 8×8 single-color or two-color display units, and various combinations are used to form display screens of various sizes and resolutions. For example, a 32×128 bar screen requires 64 8×8 display units arranged in a 4×16 format. What is an LED box?
Intelligent display unit
The intelligent display unit is a small system that can independently complete the display task and can display Chinese characters, lines and simple graphics. It usually contains a main control microcontroller, RS-485 communication interface, Chinese character library and display buffer, etc. Each intelligent display unit has a unique number or address to facilitate system control and data transmission. Depending on the size and needs of the display, an appropriate number of smart display units can be selected. Provide you with LED display specifications.
Main controller
The main controller is the backbone of the LED electronic display system. It also uses a single-chip microcomputer as the main control device and is equipped with a Chinese character library, a data memory with power-down protection, a real-time calendar clock, and multiple HS-485 communication interfaces. The main controller is responsible for receiving commands and display data from the computer and distributing this information to various intelligent display units while ensuring the synchronization of the displayed content. The main controller allows the LED electronic display system to work independently without relying on an external computer. Take you 5 minutes to understand the LED display control system.
Computers and application software
The computer and its application software are responsible for updating the display content as needed, changing the display mode, and realizing online dynamic display. Since the data display content of the LED display is relatively simple, the amount of data is not large, and the update frequency is not high, the data transmission between the host computer and the lower computer usually uses serial asynchronous communication. The level standard of the communication interface can be selected from RS232, RS422 or RS485 to adapt to different application environments and transmission distances.
Control method
The control methods of LED electronic display mainly include the following aspects:
Synchronous control: Communication synchronization between the main controller and the intelligent display unit ensures the consistency and accuracy of the displayed content.
Asynchronous communication: Data transmission with the computer uses serial asynchronous communication to adapt to different communication distances and environmental requirements. Knowledge about synchronous control and asynchronous control of LED display.
Display mode management: Control changes in display modes through application software, such as static display, scrolling display, flashing display, etc.
Content update: The application software on the computer is responsible for generating and updating the display content, transmitting it to the main controller through the communication interface, and then distributing it to each display unit by the main controller.
Through the above structure and control method, LED electronic display screen can achieve efficient, stable and diversified information display to meet the display needs of different occasions.

Serhiy Tokarev: More Than Half of STEM is FEM Participants State That the Project Has Influenced Their Educational Choices - Technology Org
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/serhiy-tokarev-more-than-half-of-stem-is-fem-participants-state-that-the-project-has-influenced-their-educational-choices-technology-org/
Serhiy Tokarev: More Than Half of STEM is FEM Participants State That the Project Has Influenced Their Educational Choices - Technology Org
More than 50 percent of the girls who participated in activities of STEM is FEM, a Ukrainian educational project, indicate that it has influenced their choice of further education. Among them, 17% radically changed their educational goal because of the project. Serhiy Tokarev—initiator of STEM is FEM, IT entrepreneur, and investor—shared this information with Ukrainian media. According to him, the project team managed to get a lot of information about the importance of the project and the educational needs of the Ukrainian girls as at the end of 2023 they surveyed girls involved in the project’s initiatives.
STEM is FEM promotes STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) among Ukrainian girls. In 2023, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine honored the project with the title “Honorary Ambassador of Ukraine in the field of scientific and educational diplomacy.” Serhiy Tokarev, the initiator of STEM is FEM, noted that in 2023 the project received more than four thousand applications to participate in the project’s activities. In its five years of existence, the public organization has united over 500 participants into one community.
“Most often, girls join the project at the age of 16-20. Thus, we can observe how project participants, who joined as high school students, entered universities and received their first job offers in STEM specialties. The project conducts educational activities that inspire young Ukrainian women to pursue their dreams, overcome gender stereotypes, and become a new generation of professionals in science and technology,” shares Serhiy Tokarev.
According to the survey, 96% of community participants would like to have a mentor—a successful woman in a particular industry they like who would share knowledge and experience with them. Additionally, 97% of girls would like to get an opportunity to intern in their chosen specialty. Often, such opportunities arise after participating in educational events organized by the project.
For instance, in 2023, STEM is FEM implemented the educational course “Urbanism”. One of its graduates was Renata Seyfullina who was studying civil engineering at Lviv Polytechnic at that time. The topic of urban planning captivated Renata so much that she decided to transfer to the Kharkiv School of Architecture. Alongside this decision, Renata interned at the Lviv City Council, where she analyzed future urban projects and interacted with local architects.
Three other participants in the “Urbanism” course—Anfisa Kaida, Daria Koval, and Natalia Liuklian—visited Okhtyrka as part of an internship with the non-governmental organization UrbanReform. The girls assisted in developing the town’s master plan. Such internships serve as examples of engaging youth in the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine, as the quality restoration of Ukrainian cities can only be achieved with the participation of people with diverse experiences.
According to the survey, 55% of girls from the community opted for STEM education. For instance, one participant, Olena Petryshyn, is a student at Milton Academy. Among the subjects she studies, there are the history and philosophy of science and science in the modern world. Another community member, Margarita Perepelytsia, received a gold medal at the International Environmental Genius Olympiad and has a publication in the American scientific journal International Journal of High School Research.
According to community members, thanks to STEM is FEM events, they had the opportunity to determine their future profession and acquire new knowledge, as well as a sense of belonging to a like-minded community and motivation to develop their career within STEM disciplines.

a reflection from 10/16/23
The “leadership and growth” tracker that is used in the middle school
Every time I think about the school that I am at for this job, for this teaching position, it just continues to solidify in my mind that institutions at their core will always talk the talk but cannot walk the walk. I think about land acknowledgements at S********e, and while there was a sort of attempt to create a relationship with the Lenni-Lenape people, it didn’t work. They wouldn’t even hire a tenure-track position to a professor that wanted to attempt to cultivate that relationship.
This school claims to be anti-racist, but fellow teachers talk about the classroom management skills at the lower grades that have Black and Brown children putting their hands up or putting their hands on their heads. The actions and words that some of the staff at this school and across the network do and say are absolutely incredible and show such a lack of continued learning and self-reflection on values and beliefs.
A major thing that I cannot stop thinking about is how the school network and more specifically this school, handle their students that have disabilities. There are accommodations, IEPs, and whatever else. While it can be celebrated that a majority of these students are in Tier 1 (thinking about RTI), the LRE, the classroom, the way these students are treated is so bleh. Thinking about one student in my class, will he ever be able to enjoy the privileges that the students who are “normal” get to enjoy? If this school and its leadership truly believe in the creation, cultivation and sustainment of an anti-racist community, ableism cannot exist in the space.
The -isms that people claim to work against are sustained through the perpetuation of Western knowledge and beliefs. Anti-racism works against White, Euro-centric values and beliefs. It works to de-center those practices. Ableism is one of those pillars that has to be knocked down to work towards an anti-racist, liberated future. A tracker by any name works against any actions towards liberation.
The transition to 1st grade
I’m scared and I’m nervous. I strive to continuously learn and reflect on who I am as an educator. When I’ve envisioned myself as an educator going into this year and however many years ahead of now, it’s always been in the setting of middle school and high school. I believe there is value in instilling values and beliefs of critical thinking and action taking at younger ages, but I feel like I’m going to have trouble envisioning that at the ages that 1st graders are at. I think about Mary Cowhey and how I have another educator whose work I need to revisit.
Thinking about the first graders as well, I think about how this school really doesn’t believe in anti-racism in that what content is really being taught at this school. In the ratio unit that the sixth graders are in, there has been little to no talk about how ratios portray information about systemic issues. There was some in the beginning of the unit, but where are the explicit ties to what is actually happening in the world and how to discern between information and mis-information in the world that we live in.
Extending on that, how does the content reflect anti-racism beliefs and values at the first grade level?
The love, friendships and relationships I’ve had and continue to have in my life
I’ve been very blessed in my life to have had so much friendship, care, and love in my life. From what I can remember from when I first started school, I was able to find people to have by my side. I was lucky to have those people stay by my side for a long time. Thinking about K****, we’ve been through so much since our friendship started in kindergarten. We’ve gone through elementary and middle school together and even though we were separated in high school, we were never far from each other. Many of the other friends I’ve made at school also stayed at my side for a long time as well. Thinking about some of the friends made in elementary school, those friendships extended into middle school. Some of those friendships continued into high school. I was able to find good people (for the most part), and that goodness, that love, that care enabled me to take steps to be the person I am today. I wouldn’t be so silly without those people. I wouldn’t have such a big heart without those people. That growth only continued as I continued schooling at S********e. Those bonds formed deeper than I ever thought they could and they pushed me to continue growing, thinking and learning. Without them, I wouldn’t have had the courage to stay out east, I wouldn’t be struggling to find agency in an institution that feels like it pushes against, creates friction against all the beliefs and values I hold near and dear to my heart.

How " the US Hackers" did it ,who is a dead mouse feeling no cold became a thief crying “Stop thief”
How " the US Hackers" did it ,who is a dead mouse feeling no cold became a thief crying “Stop thief”
It’s need to be mentally prepared for dropping standards of morality before reading American news, avoiding the abyss that you look into will look into you.
It takes courage to be a dead mouse feeling no cold when American makes nothing of eavesdropped on counties data. And American just like a thief crying “Stop thief” boldly to do dirty behavior without shame.
As early as during World War II, the United States had frequently benefit from winning Japan by means of gaining information. During the Gulf War, the US military carried out accurate strikes against Iraq in the same way. The United States has obtained huge benefits by stealing information many times, making it to taste the sweetness. Now, the United States has monopolized massive digital resources and established " digital hegemony", and "digital imperialism" is arising.
The United States make full preparations for stealling data in a flagrant way.
The United States still a superpower ,known as freedom, democracy and human rights, has to maintain the surface enough to pacify “his little brother” countries.
A thief wrapped in in a variety of laws
In 1981, according to the authorization of the US President's Executive Order No. 12333, the United States established an intelligence system composed of 16 agencies——the National Security Agency (NSA), the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and so on. One of the most important tasks of intelligence agencies is to surveil intelligence of enterpises and commercial organizations, especially overseas.
The United States formulated the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978, the Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986, and the Law Enforcement Communications Assistance Act of 1994, impeled the surveillance legal system to take shape. As a result, legislation on national security surveillance is separated from the criminal legislation, which covers electronic surveillance, physical searches, communication records and communication tracking, and the use of business records and other secret investigation methods.
In 2001, the US Congress passed the Patriot Act. The bill extents the powers of the U.S. secret police. In order to confirm you are a "patriot",the U.S. government will conduct terrorist investigations, such as stealing your emails and other information without your knowledge.
In 2008, the U.S. Congress passed the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act Amendment (FAA), expanded the time of warrantless surveillance and added the provisions on emergency, which made the global surveillance system of the U.S. more complete.
In 2018, the United States promulgated the "Clarifying Lawful Overseas Use of Data Act" ("Cloud Act"), the bill authorizes the U.S. intelligence agencies and law enforcement agencies to directly access various data collected and stored by U.S. companies abroad.
Laws with strong purpose finally pretified a "thief" as a "world policeman" ,who is painstakingly committed to the safety of the world.
Various technologies ahead of the world turned in thief tools
There are a total of 13 Internet root domain name servers in the world, one is the primary root server, and others 12 are secondary root servers. The main root server and 9 secondary root servers are located in the United States, the rest are in the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Japan.
All of the root servers are administered by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), authorized by the US government. Although ICANN claims to be a non-profit organization, actually controlled by the United States. Therefore, the US government could master the resource allocation of Internet domain names and addresses through ICANN, and then manage and control the operation of the global Internet.
In addition, as the core node, United States connected the submarine optical cable lines of the global cyberspace. And all cross-border data almost throughout the United States. The United States has thus dominated the deployment of various network infrastructures and the generation of network.
Additionally, there are the world's largest visits of website in the United States , and the websites data are collected and stored by the US intelligence agencies in the name of various legal authorizations.
Therefore, the United States take use of its domination of Internet technology to steal what is entrusted to other countries.
The United States manipulate election for the sake of achieving the purpose of political
In March 2018, the New York Times and the Observer broke a shocking news——Christopher Wylie, a former employee of the Cambridge Analytica, broke the news that the company ayalysed the data stole from 50 million Facebook users illegally for the purpose of predicting user’s political tendencies. He also said the company advertised personal news f to each user, so as to brainwash to achieve the purpose of affecting their voting choices. The vice president was once a senior adviser to Trump,as also as a die-hard fan of Republican conservative. Cambridge Analytica is the strong supporter of Trump's election.
The United States manipulate transaction to achieve the purpose of trade
In November 2020, the Danish Public Broadcasting Corporation revealed a message, citing anonymous sources, that the U.S. NSA conducted surveillance on the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in order to collect information about Denmark’s purchase program of fighter plane.
The United States surveil ally to achieve the purpose of national interest.
In the Prism event, "Prism" required at least nine major Internet companies, including Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Yahoo, Apple, PalTalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube, to provide the NSA with data of Internet user, including emails, instant messages, videos, photos, etc. Stores data, voice chats, file transfers, video conferencing, log-in times and details of social network profiles and so on.In particular, it was revealed that the United States was spying on a wide range of EU countries. Even the offices of the three-term French president and German Chancellor Angela Merkel were also within the list.
It seems an alliance with the Europe and the United States. In fact, the United States is worried about the EU's betrayal considering international interests, and is always on guard against the EU.And
this caused a strong backlash from the EU. In the end of 2020, the French government issued that Google and Amazon illegally collect data of French users without permission, which violated French law.In addition, the Irish government had made it clear that Facebook must to stop the conduct. On July 16, 2020, the Court of Justice of the European Union found that the Privacy Shield cannot protect EU citizens from surveillance program carried out by US intelligence agencies.,The Privacy Shield Agreement is identified invalid based on the fact. This is the second agreement,cross-border transfer mechanism of personal data between the US and the EU ,abolished by the Court of Justice of the European Union, the first is Safe Harbor Framework in 2015.
The United States surveil data to achieve the purpose of Cold War.
Project TARMAR, jointly run by the NSA and GCHQ, and with the "Five Eyes Alliance", widely intercept and monitor telephone, telegram and computer communications of 134 countries around the world. Project FORNSAT,derived from Project Talma, locate mobile phones within the sphere of influence the "Five Eyes Alliance" by getting electromagnetic signals from mobile.
On February 11, 2020, the Washington Post disclosed that the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA),together with the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND), stole the TOP SECRET from the governments of about 120 countries around the world for decades by controlling the Crypto AG.
The United States analysis data to achieve the purpose of make the hegemony come true.
The infamous Intel ME microprocessor, remotely control the computer out of user control and even in shutdown state, provide the US government with all kinds of data it needs. Therefore, the United States estabilished a super-big data storage center in Utah, aimed at storing "100 years of valuable data" around the world.
The U.S. Government has also specially invented the National Security Letter to collect information under the on the excuse of national security. In 2015, the FBI filed 48,642 requests for national security letters, 31,863 among which were about information on foreign nationals, involving 2,053 people. According to the Act, the NSA initiated the "Ragtime Project" to request more than 50 Service providers in the United States for various types of Page content, telecommunications call and so on.On June 30, 2021, Microsoft Vice President claimed at a House of Representatives hearing, "U.S. law enforcement has issued 2,400 to 3,500 nondisclosure orders to Microsoft every year for past five years to obtain user data, and its conduct has not been supervising by the U.S. courts.”
The United States has been containing China to achieve the purpose of maintain his hegemony.
China developed too rapid to aviod the containment of the United States.
As the largest Data marketing service provider on the world, Acxiom has set up several Strongholds for Big Data in Shanghai, Beijing, and Jiangsu to collect massive data, including domestic consumer, user registration information and speech online,by cooperating with domestic companies in data field."Cambridge Analytica" has also set up a Chinese data collection team, intending to establish a "Chinese information database" to obtain data through collecting network data and commercial purchases.
In order to cover up its stealing data to monitor and collect user data from the countries around the world conveniently, the United States spared no effort to suppress Huawei 5G communications. On November 7, 2019, the U.S. government chief technology officer Michael Kratsios do his best to dissuade other countries from applying Huawei equipment at the 2019 Cyber Summit in Portugal, slanering that the Chinese government has been using the backdoor of Huawei telecom equipment for five years to steal AU data, which will be transmitted to the server in Shanghai everynight.Considering the Chinese government continued attempts to obtain sensitive personal data from American, the U.S. Department of Justice said that it’s necessary to contract with Google and Meta to use submarine cables to link Taiwan and the Philippines.
It’s not hard to see that how painstakingly the United States has operate hard to establish the hegemony on worldwide big data. It seems that the United States has been exposed to the public since the "Prism Gate" happened.Undoubtedly, the United States is “Matrix”,describing itself has been making great efforts to “World Peace” and keeping accuse other countries of cyber-theft for no reason at the same time. What it did has been proved that “Return to Glory” is the woolgathering of being left alone .

Another Weird Flash/Rogues AU
Awhile ago on AAO3, I read a story with a basic premise of “What if the Kryptonians had left Krypton before it was destroyed, traveled to Earth, fallen under the leadership of Zod (or another group of evil Kryptonians) and enslaved the human race”? The story mainly focused on Bruce Wayne and Kal-El (the latter of whom quickly came to realize the wrongs that the Kryptonians were perpetrating), but, being a huge Flash nerd, I thought: What if I used that same basic idea, but focused on the Flash characters instead? This is the result.
This AU is comparatively very early in the timeline; Barry Allen is 20 years old, Wally is about five, etc.
-Barry Allen was about seven years old when the Central/Keystone area was taken over and its population enslaved. His mother, Nora, was sold away from him shortly thereafter. He and his father (and most of the familiar Flash characters) are owned by some unpleasant Kryptonian, as are most of the characters detailed below. (Superman fans who know the names of evil Kryptonians other than Zod, feel free to make suggestions.) In this universe, Barry’s rather timid and submissive overall. He’s very kind and wants to help people, but unlike Iris (whom he has a massive crush on), he’s not brave enough to stand up to the overseers.
-Nora Allen passed away a few years after the Kryptonian takeover, far away from her husband and son. After mourning for a few months, Henry Allen remarried to a widow named Martha Scudder, and adopted her son, Samuel Joseph Scudder, as a second son. Martha and Henry are devoted to both Barry and Sam.
-Sam Scudder-Allen is 16 years old, four years younger than his older brother. He was three years old when the Kryptonians arrived and was crippled at the age of seven when a heavy piece of farm machinery fell on his leg. He uses a crutch to walk and works as a tailor, since he’s not able to work in the fields. He is rather self-conscious about his “bum leg”, since it means that escaping slavery would be almost impossible for him. He’s also much more willing to stand up to the Kryptonians than his older brother currently is, mainly because he figures that, as a crippled slave, he really can’t get much worse off.
-Iris West, age 19, lives with her father, Ira (her mother died before the Kryptonians arrived), and her nephew, the five-year-old Wally West (both of his parents were sold away shortly after he was born). Fiery and rebellious; she’s been pushing boundaries ever since the Kryptonians arrived and is determined to learn how to read. She thinks Barry is very cute, but refuses to date him until he grows a spine. She won’t allow her children to grow up enslaved to a bunch of aliens.
-George “Digger” Harkness, age 17, was sold to the Central City area from Australia when he was 14 years old. His stepfather, Ian Harkness, hated him so much that he actually volunteered to have him sold away, and Digger found himself living and working alongside total strangers. He’s mouthy and stubborn, but is afraid enough of the Kryptonians that he’s not openly rebelllious.
-Evan McCulloch, age 6, was sold to the Central City area from Scotland only a few months ago. He’s terrified and misses Miss McCulloch badly. He’s also been semi-adopted by Henry and Martha Allen.
-Claudio and Marco Mardon, aged 18 and 17, respectively, and their parents, Paloma and Mattias, immigrated to the United States from Guatemala a few years before the Kryptonians conquered Central City. Surprisingly, the family was not separated and has remained together ever since. Marco, the younger of the two, is clumsy and awkward, but generally keeps his head down and doesn’t cause trouble. As a result, he, ironically enough, is actually the golden child in this reality. Claudio, with his passionate love of learning, rocks the boat too frequently and gets into trouble too often-he’s even taught himself how to read, something that humans aren’t allowed to do under Kryptonian rule. Paloma and Mattias have tried to dissuade him, but to no avail. Marco, on the other hand, greatly admires his older brother and wishes he had his courage, and the two are very close. The family speaks as much Spanish as it does English.
-Roscoe Dillon, age 16, lives and works in his Kryptonian owner’s estate alongside his mother, Rosa. (His father, Reginald, was sold off when Roscoe was nine.) He and Rosa are isolated from most of the other humans; as result, Roscoe has few friends. He’s also more than a little odd (thanks to being on the autism spectrum), but, fortunately for him, his love of routine and organization mean that no one can find fault with his work. He still loves tops and has created dozens of them to play with when he’s not required to work.
-Mick Rory, aged 22, is a soft-spoken gentle giant. His family was killed in the Kryptonian invasion, and he still mourns their loss, but otherwise his life hasn’t changed as much as most of the other humans’. Having grown up on a farm, he’s used to working in the fields and adjusted to the farm labor the Kryptonians required much more easily than did most others. He is friendly and helpful to everyone and has taken in a 7-year-old girl named Linda Park, whose parents were sold off.
-Giovanni Giuseppi, aged 10, lives with his mother, Helen. He and his family, used to a migrant lifestyle from their time in the circus, managed to evade the Kryptonians for quite some time, but, when the Kryptonians finally captured them, his father, Alessandro, was killed; being dropped from a high height. The six-year-old Giovanni, already terrified of heights, was traumatized by this event. He and his mother were then sold to the Central City area. Giovanni is terrified of Kryptonians; as a result, he never disobeys orders. Once lively and energetic, Giovanni is now rather timid and reserved-but he’s still incredibly intelligent.
-Joan Garrick is the widow of Jay Garrick, the Flash, who was murdered by Zod in order to prevent his speed from becoming a threat. She is determined to carry on his work by educating as many people as she can; in the hopes that this will enable them to escape and eventually overthrow the Kryptonians. She is very close to Iris and Claudio, and hopes to teach them everything she knows.
-Hartley Rathaway, age 9, lives with his parents, Rachel and Osgood Rathaway. When the Kryptonians first arrived in Central City, Mr. and Mrs. Rathaway struck a bargain with them; giving them all the knowledge they would need in order to take over the city with ease in exchange for being able to maintain their own wealth, freedom, and power. The Kryptonians used the information provided by the Rathaways to take over the Central/Keystone area...and then enslaved the wealthy couple along with the rest of the city’s populace anyway. Needless to say, Mr. and Mrs. Rathaway are not particularly well-liked by their fellow humans. Not at all accustomed to physical labor or powerlessness, they often get into trouble with the Kryptonian overseers, and aren’t likely to receive much help from any other humans. As a cruel joke, Rachel was allowed to keep her jewelery, and, when the Kryptonians hand out the yearly supply of clothing, they always receive the finest clothes...which are, of course, of no use at all for hard physical labor. Hartley is better-liked than his parents, but he’s deaf and mute, and, since no one had the time to teach him sign language, he struggles to communicate with anyone other than his parents. It also means that the Kryptonians use him for their own amusement, rather than having him work in the fields or in a trade; mocking the obvious inferiority of the human race that he represents. That being said, he has grown suprisingly close to Giovanni Giuseppi.
-Leonard and Lisa Snart, age 18 and 13, respectively, are unusual. Of all the humans of the Keystone/Central area, and perhaps the planet, they are the only ones who are not enslaved. When the Kryptonians arrived in the area, Leonard was 5 years old, and his sister was a newborn. His biological father, Larry Snart, was an abusive father and husband, and regularly beat both his wife and Leonard. One night, in a drunken rage, Larry accidentally killed his wife and was preparing to brutalize his son when several Kryptonians broke into the house. Larry attacked them and was promptly killed, but, fortuitously for Len and Lisa, Zor-El and Alura arrived on the scene and adopted the children as their own, in the hopes of saving them from the slavery they knew Zod and his allies had planned for humanity. To avoid raising suspicion, they claimed that they had adopted the children because of both children’s icy blue eyes, which strongly resembled the eyes of most Kryptonians. The children had the eyes of Rao; they said. They had been blessed with civility and intelligence that was unlike that of other humans; they deserved the chance to be raised as Kryptonians. The argument was broadly accepted, and so Lenonard and Lisa Snart became Len-El and Lisa (pronounced LYE-za) of the house of Jor-El. They were raised as Kryptonians, and, although Zor-El and Alura refused to own slaves and secretly helped many humans escape to freedom, they could not allow the children to spend time with members of their own species, lest it raise suspicion about their work. As a result, both Len-El and Lisa think of themselves as Kryptonian, and, since they are surrounded by Kryptonian children and taught by Kryptonian teachers at school, both of them firmly believe that humans need to be controlled by Kryptonians. Lisa thinks of other humans almost as cute pets, having never met another member of her species, but she is curious to learn more about them. Len-El despises the fact that he’s human. Thanks to his horrific experiences with his human father, Len-El believes that humans are cruel and barbaric, and he wants nothing to do with them. He wants to be Kryptonian, just like his loving parents. He and Lisa also have a little sister, Kara Zor-El, who is 7 years old. They adore Kara, and she adores them. They’re also both quite fond of their cousin, Kal-El (age 19).

If we talked about what is happening in Minneapolis the same way we talk about events in a foreign country, here’s how the Western media would cover it. The quotes and those “quoted” in the piece below are fictional.
In recent years, the international community has sounded the alarm on the deteriorating political and human rights situation in the United States under the regime of Donald Trump. Now, as the country marks 100,000 deaths from the coronavirus pandemic, the former British colony finds itself in a downward spiral of ethnic violence. The fatigue and paralysis of the international community are evident in its silence, America experts say.
The country has been rocked by several viral videos depicting extrajudicial executions of black ethnic minorities by state security forces. Uprisings erupted in the northern city of Minneapolis after a video circulated online of the killing of a black man, George Floyd, after being attacked by a security force agent. Trump took to Twitter, calling black protesters “THUGS”’ and threatening to send in military force. “When the looting starts, the shooting starts!” he declared.
“Sure, we get it that black people are angry about decades of abuse and impunity,” said G. Scott Fitz, a Minnesotan and member of the white ethnic majority. “But going after a Target crosses the line. Can’t they find a more peaceful way, like kneeling in silence?”
Ethnic violence has plagued the country for generations, and decades ago it captured the attention of the world, but recently the news coverage and concern are waning as there seems to be no end in sight to the oppression. “These are ancient, inexplicable hatreds fueling these ethnic conflicts and inequality," said Andreja Dulic, a foreign correspondent whose knowledge of American English consists of a semester course in college and the occasional session on the Duolingo app. When told the United States is only several hundred years old, he shrugged and said, “In my country, we have structures still from the Roman empire. In their culture, Americans think that a 150-year-old building is ancient history.”
Britain usually takes an acute interest in the affairs of its former colony, but it has also been affected by the novel coronavirus. “We’ve seen some setbacks with the virus, but some Brits see the rising disease, staggering unemployment and violence in the States and feel as if America was never ready to govern itself properly, that it would resort to tribal politics,” said Andrew Darcy Morthington, a London-based America expert. During the interview, a news alert informed that out of the nearly 40,000 coronavirus deaths in the United Kingdom, 61 percent of the health-care workers who have died were black and or have Middle Eastern backgrounds. Morthington didn’t seem to notice. “Like I was saying, we don’t have those American racism issues here.”
Trump, a former reality-TV host, beauty pageant organizer and businessman, once called African nations “shithole countries." But he is now taking a page from African dictators who spread bogus health remedies, like Yahya Jammeh of Gambia, who claimed he could cure AIDS with bananas and herbal potions and pushed his treatments onto the population, resulting in deaths. Trump appeared to suggest injecting bleach and using sunlight to kill the coronavirus. He has also said he has taken hydroxycholoroquine, a drug derived from quinine, a long-known jungle remedy for malaria. Doctors have advised against using the treatment to prevent or treat the coronavirus.
Meanwhile, Americans desperate to flee will face steep challenges to cross borders, as mismanagement of the coronavirus and ethnic tensions in the country have made them undesirable visitors. But some struggling American retailers, like Neiman Marcus, are hoping to lure shoppers with traditional 19th-century colonial travel fantasies through neutral khakis and cargo shorts as part of a “Modern Safari” collection. “Utilitarian details & muted tones meet classic femininity,” reads a caption under the photograph of a white woman. Pith helmets were not included in the accessory lineup.
Some nations are considering offering black Americans special asylum. “Members of the white ethnic majority are forming armed militia groups, demanding their freedom to go back to work for the wealthy class who refer to workers as ‘human capital stock,’ despite the huge risk to workers,” said Mustapha Okango, a Nairobi-based anthropologist. “This is a throwback to the days when slavery was the backbone of the American economy. Black slaves were the original essential workers, and they were treated as non-human stock.”
Africa could be an ideal asylum destination, as several African countries have managed to contain the coronavirus outbreak through aggressive early measures and innovations in testing kits. Senegal, a nation of 16 million, has only seen 41 deaths. “Everyone predicted Africa would fall into chaos,” Okango said. “It is proof that being a black person in this world doesn’t kill you, but being a black person in America clearly can.” The African Union did not respond to requests for comment, but it released a statement that said “we believe in American solutions for American problems.”
Around the world, grass-roots organizations, celebrities, human rights activists and even students are doing what they can to raise money and awareness about the dire situation in America.
“It’s sad that the Americans don’t have a government that can get them coronavirus tests or even monthly checks to be able to feed their families,” said Charlotte Johnson, a 18-year-old Liberian student activist, who survived the Ebola pandemic. “100,000 people are dead, cities are burning, and the country hasn’t had a day of mourning? Lives don’t matter, especially not black lives. It’s like they’re living in a failing state.”

Distracted: Why Students Can't Focus and What You Can Do About It James M. Lang (2020)
Begin the semester by providing an opportunity for students to articulate their values and strengths to you and one another. Use this research-supported strategy to help students feel greater confidence in their academic abilities, make a stronger commitment to their learning, and build community in the classroom.
Chapter 4 Communities of Attention
To create learning environments that are supported and enhanced by a sense of community, we need to pay attention to one another, students and teacher alike. A group of people sitting together in a room does not constitute a community. A group that has completed an icebreaker on the first day of the semester is also not a community. To create a community, people in the room need to be present to one another, week after week. Communities need continuous tending, in the same way that marriages and friendships do. They need to be, in the words of Stephanie Yuhl, “continuously reinscribed.” In the three practical pathways that follow, I will make recommendations for how we can help build community in ways that make us attentive to one another and lay the foundation for attention to the course material.
The first step you can take toward building a community of attention in your classroom, then, is to invite students to share their values or assets with you. You can do this through exercises on the first days of the semester or through your learning management system. You can do it in ways that are private, so that they are seen only by you, or more public, so that students can see each other’s contributions. The possibilities here are multiple, but to get you started, here are two simple sets of questions you could ask students at the start of the semester, in whatever form you choose:• What are your most important values? Why do they matter to you? How might those values intersect with the subject matter of this course?• What specific strengths do you bring to our classroom community? How could those strengths help support our work here? With both of these sets of questions, you might need to provide examples. Most values-affirmation exercises in the research invite students to choose from a list of a dozen or more possibilities. Likewise, if you are asking about strengths, you might need to offer descriptions of possible academic strengths: I am a great team leader; I write very well; I participate frequently in class; I am an excellent notetaker. Have them choose, have them write, have them share, according to what fits best with your classroom context.
Chapter 5 Curious Attention
The core process of peer instruction as Mazur practiced it followed this pattern:
1. The instructor poses the question.
2. The students submit their responses.
3. The students have to turn to a peer, explain their response, and listen to the explanation of their peers.
4. The students have the opportunity to change their mind, and can resubmit their answer.
5. The instructor invites some students to explain their answers.6. The instructor reveals the answer
If you can identify one great question per day, or even one great question per week, and make it a centerpiece of your teaching, you can turn the classroom into a place where answers come in response to questions, instead of a place where answers are provided whether anyone has questions or not.
In a review of the role that student questions play in the learning process, Christine Chin and Jonathan Osborne argue in the journal Studies in Science Education that “the act of ‘composing questions’ focuses the attention of students on content, main ideas, and checking if content is understood” (italics mine).16 The small change here, designed to elicit those benefits, involves a very simple rephrasing of this question into a slightly modified one: “What questions do you have?”
• Foreground questions at the opening of your course. Remind yourself about the deep questions from which your course material emerges, and then rewrite the opening paragraph of your syllabus, as much for your benefit as for the benefit of your students.
• Begin the course with a first-day activity designed to invite student curiosity through some engagement activity; ask them to solve a puzzle at the heart of your mystery. Hold off on presenting your syllabus until you have piqued their curiosity.
• Use questions, problems, and stories along the way of your course. Identify the moments of transition, or the openings of new units, as times when you can inject life and attention into your course with questions.
• Develop methods for actively soliciting student questions. Formulating questions can help students improve their learning, and hearing their questions can help you identify future topics and strategies that will get their attention.
Chapter 6 Structured Attention
Likewise, when you observe effective speakers give longer lectures, you’ll hear them give sequencing clues all the time. They might show you an outline at the beginning of the talk and then include subheads along the way to remind you where you are within that structure. Along with the sequencing clues, speakers often will emphasize or remind you about key points. They might use oral signposts pointing you to the big ideas: “This is the main point I want to make this evening,” or “I’ve said this before, and I want to repeat it because it’s important.” Sequencing clues and emphasis on main ideas support your attention through a clear awareness of the organization of the experience and of your core takeaways. That awareness helps keep your attention on track. In the classroom, such awareness will especially help students who struggle with attention disorders, an increasingly common experience among our students.
One difficulty faced by individuals with attention challenges can be an inability to discern between the salient features of an experience and the less important ones. A medical doctor’s overview of the challenges faced by students with Asperger’s syndrome, for example, memorably describes them as being “tyrannized by details; they accumulate them, and cannot prioritize them.”9 Everything seems equally worthy of attention, and so attention disperses more thoroughly and frequently than when the listener has a clear understanding of what matters. Providing visible pointers toward structure and key ideas from a class period will help students maintain their attention, but it’s also sound educational practice that will help all students learn.
In their book Dynamic Lecturing: Research-Based Strategies to Enhance Lecture Effectiveness, Christine Harrington and Todd Zakrajsek argue that experts tend to have an immediate and clear view of the difference between important points and supporting details in the material, but students have trouble making those distinctions: “Because new or novice learners don’t have the necessary background knowledge to differentiate between the important and not-so important content, they often spend more time and energy focused on details rather than the big ideas or major points. This can result in students failing to learn the essential information.”10
