the new frontiers dlc brought up interesting information regarding the symbol we periodically see throughout the game

the main point is that the symbol of the game is worshipped by the ancients as a god, or as a miracle of the god they believed in. it’s interesting to note that sage gives this information, as she has data on the ancients in her data banks, and thus can be relied as giving accurate information.

it is also important to note what sage also says: “perhaps the god of the Ancients depicted by the wall markings still exists out there today.”

which feels very poignant. sage has by this been point been carefully observing every action sonic the hedgehog has been doing. she has been adding more and more data to her collection, and has frequently shown before hand her own curiosity at sonic’s power.

importantly:

“how are you able to escape cyberspace?” and “how can you use the chaos emeralds?”

we know, of course, that all of sonic’s other friends were trapped in cyberspace. Sonic managed to be fast enough to escape. obviously, this is quite the outlier ability.

we also know that sonic’s ability to manipulate the chaos emeralds is an odd phenomenon. there is simply no other character in this series on par with sonic in his ability to transform using the emeralds, as he does so the most frequently and usually without consequences. sonic has even been seen transforming into his super form for fun (sonic 3) or staying in it for days at a time (sonic advance 1), and now using them multiple times in a row (sonic frontiers).

sonic is also one of the few characters able to perform “chaos control”, often said to be a “miracle”, was used as a parameter for gerald robotnik’s “ultimate lifeform”, and a rare ability. most characters are either robots (metal sonic, emerl), or developed by gerald (shadow, biolizard), or, in black doom’s case, are also an alien.

then, we learn that the chaos emeralds are originally from the ancients and their home world. most normal mobians on sonic’s planet can not use the power of the emeralds, or for very long.

knuckles also says something very interesting:

the connection between Angel island and the ancients are clearly stated, heavily implying the ancients built the ruins that are noticeably stylistically different from the echidna ones, which lean towards a more maya inspired style. the ruins being spoken about are implied to be the very technological advanced ones we see throughout the island, much more bold in color, reminiscent of futuristic realism, with inventions such as warp pads throughout the island. we know the ancient echidnas were not familiar with the emeralds (considering Chaos would never have been provoked if they had), and it seems unlikely in their dedication to protecting the master emerald from harm they would abuse that power to create technology. it’s also highly possible the chaos emeralds separate from Angel island/the master emerald given that sonic finds them in sonic 1 while exploring South Island, where the chaos emeralds seem to have been residing long enough to cause geographic changes. in essence, it’s highly unlikely the echidnas had created those ruins, and knuckles confirms it was likely the ancients. sonic frontiers emphasizes that the ancients were incredibly technologically advanced.

and within these ruins, we find two interesting artifacts:

the realistic depictions of hedgehogs in hydrocity and the infamous hidden palace mural- both of which are on angel island. the style of these artifacts match neatly with the futuristic, brightly colored ruins associated with the technologically advanced machinery around angel island.

thus, it can be implied that the ancients are the ones who make these pieces of art. which then begs the question: why? what interest would they have in a hedgehog?

perhaps that was the form they most often depicted their deity in. through prophetic visions inspired by the chaos emeralds, which transcend time and thus know one day sonic would have hold of them, or for other reasons, mystical or physical in nature, their deity was often considered to be a hedgehog.

and what is Sonic’s purpose, in sonic frontiers?

a) he guides the koco to the hermits, protecting them

b) he and his friends help the koco move on, as they are extensively ghosts, and often during these scenes, the symbol appears in the sky

c) he defeats the end for good

it is also interesting to note that the ancients parallel the story in sonic adventure one in quite a few ways, mainly in how tikal could not soothe chaos and simply caged them in the master emerald for all eternity, and it was sonic who pointed out that locking him up wasn’t fixing the issue at hand, but only worsening it. the ancients, too, had locked up a god like creature, and failed to defeat, or otherwise solve the problem at hand, and it is sonic who comes to finally destroy what had terrorized them for so many years.

is sonic the hedgehog the manifestation of the ancients god? an interesting question.

It took days for any news, leaving you to inform Mavuika you were heading to your appointment with Mayahuel, and that you'd see her there. Unfortunately, your focus went onto all the water you needed to drink before the appointment.

"Oh, I'm sorry! Granny, hi!" your eyes widened as you realised who you had just walked into, but you didn't see how the annoyance in Citlali's faded as she slipped into a trance the moment your hand touched hers.

You didn't mean to hold her up for whoever she was meeting in the stadium, but she seemed less bothered as she looked you over carefully.

Time has been unfair to you and those around you, but even candlelight can turn into a roaring flame with enough fuel...

Citlali said nothing, only nodding her head before walking away. She already had enough on her plate before finding out that you were carrying the Pyro Archon's offspring.

"Unlike that old hag, 'Granny Itztli,' right? Does she think she can ignore us just because she's famous?" Paimon grumbled, not realising that Citlali was making her way over, after the slight delay you caused.

"Ambushed? I was under the presumption you were resting here at the inn for the time being." Mayahuel raised an eyebrow, moving over to open the door as someone knocked.

"She's been staying with me in my personal chambers." Mavuika interrupted, smiling softly as she walked over to your side, pressing kisses to each of your knuckles after taking your hand in hers.

"Archon? I see... well regardless of that status, you are the other mother? Along with the scans, we'll also listen to the heartbeat today, how does that sound?" Mayahuel moved on from the revelation of Mavuika being the mother of your baby rather quickly, instead focussing on the appointment itself. She didn't say that Chuychu had warned her of some unprecedented circumstances, and that you'd be nervous talking about it. Of course, she never expected it to be this unforeseen.

Instead the older woman focussed on the way your eyes lit up, looking at Mavuika who shared the awe-struck expression the moment Mayahuel found the baby's heartbeat and turned up the volume of the doppler. A lot of technology in Natlan had been developed using phlogiston, including some medical equipment. Many doctors still relied on more natural remedies, but pregnancies needed all the precautions...

"Mayahuel, that look on your face. Are the baby and mother okay?" Mavuika was more intuitive in that moment, watching as Mayahuel pressed something, clearing the audio for a moment.

"Is that two heartbeats?" Mavuika's eyes widened, looking for confirmation as you frowned, looking between the doctor and your girlfriend for an answer.

"Isn't one of the heartbeats mine?" your question may have been slightly silly, but Mayahuel just shook her head, turning around the screen to show you both.

"Congratulations, you're having twins." Mayahuel smiled, letting the two of you process what was just said.

You cut yourself off, looking at your belly before back at Mavuika, "how the hell am I supposed to birth two babies?"

"It will be safe for her to carry two? Safe for her and them?" Mavuika questioned Mayahuel, who explained that twins came with more risks, but also more monitoring, and while your sister specialised in abyssal corruption and your father Cusco was more saurian based, there was always your mother and many doctors in the Masters of the Night-Wind who would be on call. Mavuika demanded the best of everyone, but this was immediately heightened.

She needed you, and the babies, to live and be healthy.

You were quiet the entire time that Mavuika and Mayahuel spoke, your eyes on the screen that was still showing the two blobs. Your two babies. Twins...

Twins weren't unheard of in Natlan. There were the twin heroes, Atawallpa and Waskar, who had grown up in separate tribes. Atawallpa's history fell to the People of the Springs, while Waskar's fell to the Collective of the Plenty. Or the twins from Xbalanque's era, Ahpub and Ixquieh, but their endings had not been happy ones, with Ahpub accidentally killing his twin sister.

"My love?" Her voice was laced with concern, eyebrows crinkling together as she held your hands, noticing your silence and how glassy your eyes were.

Mayahuel had stepped out to get something, giving you time to speak your mind.

"I'm raising two babies alone... they'll grow up to hear stories and legends about their mother, the Pyro Archon, and I wish you could see them grow up, but it feels so selfish to want that. I feel selfish. You're supposed to be able to use the powers without any regret, to save Natlan... I'm sorry, I'm so sorry-" Tears began to cascade down your cheeks, frantically trying to wipe at them but Mavuika beat you to it.

"You are not selfish... you are pregnant with twins and their mother is doomed to die before their birth, or they, their mother, and the entire nation that awaits them will be consumed by the abyss instead. This is not something I take likely, my responsibility as the archon of this nation, but also as a to-be-parent. I want more than anything to meet them, to watch you flourish into motherhood... but I cannot. We are not selfish for wanting things we cannot have. I can only apologise for putting you into this situation." Mavuika shuffled awkwardly to swing a leg up onto the patient bed you had been laying on for the scan, her arm wrapping around your shoulders to hold you close.

"I don't regret it. I could never, I don't regret becoming pregnant with your twins, and I don't regret you, how could I ever regret falling in love with you? You deserve love Mavuika, the god of death can't take that from you." Your forehead rested against hers, listening to each other breathe as emotions overran you both.

Mavuika didn't speak, she couldn't force a single word out. She regretted none of what she had done, she only mourned what she would miss, and worried about how much danger she was putting you in, from the moment of that first kiss.

Mayahuel eventually returned, passing you a copy of the ultrasound result to keep, along with a lot more medical things that Chuychu would no doubt begin to lecture you about the moment she saw them.

"Um... I have to go pee, but we need to talk about... them, and telling my family the update." You stated as you and Mavuika left, luckily the outside of the medical centre in the stadium was bare enough for you two to go undetected, but you kept your words careful nonetheless.

"Of course. By the way, Chuychu and Chasca said something before, about you having... odd naming choices?"

"Okay, in my defence, I was six when papa asked me to name a qucusaur chick. Six year old me was mad because it wasn't a itkomisaur." You paused, spotting the confused look on Mavuika's face, "I used to play with them with Ororon, back when mama took me to work with her at the Masters of the Night-Wind. Now, I really have to pee!" you hurried away, leaving Mavuika to smile to herself as she headed back to the Speaker's Chamber, hoping that her scouts will have found any more evidence of the Captain and Ororon... wait, you knew Ororon when you were a child?

"You knew Ororon?" Mavuika was straight to the point, sitting in her throne in the Speaker's Chamber, waiting for you to return.

"Similar ages, kinda. Mama would take me to work while Chuychu and Chasca did whatever... I don't even remember anymore. They say I always wanted to be around them, and I guess it got annoying... or taking their baby sister everywhere was annoying for them. Ororon was usually playing with saurians or digging in the vegetable patch outside granny's place, Citlali, I mean... so I'd go help. He was quiet and a bit awkward but we got along. Eventually I started all my training and stuff with the Flower-Feather clan, so mama stopped taking me, so I didn't see him much then. He started bringing me fruits, vegetables and honey though when I moved out. I think papa said something to Ifa... anyway, I should go rest, you have people waiting for you outside." You gestured to the door behind you, smiling softly as you tried to hold back how awkward you felt. Mavuika on any of the thrones for the Pyro Archon always made her feel so far away from you. Besides that one time...

Clearing your throat, you pushed the memory from your mind as you took to the personal chambers, immediately heading towards the bowl of fruit that had been left on the side. Picking out a sunsettia, your eyes lingered on the quenepa berry for a moment. Ororon liked those, well... he likes all fruits and vegetables.

Taking a bite, you settled down on the couch, spotting one of the pregnancy books that your mother had passed to Chuychu to give to you. Some part of you thought that it was meant for a future Chuychu instead, but you exceeded expectations this time...

Reaching for the book, you began to read off from where you had bookmarked. Twelve weeks, the twins should each be around the size of a plum...

Mavuika didn't return to you until later in the evening. Bringing with her some stuffed 'n' mashed potatoes with fillings swapped out to be more pregnancy friendly, plus some grainfruit wraps without the leaf wrapping.

"I figured you would be hungry- did you eat the entire bowl of fruit?" Mavuika's eyes widened, looking over at said bowl.

"No, I left you two plums!" you began to defend yourself with a pout, before deciding to explain instead, "since they're the size of the twins at twelve weeks. Plus Mayahuel did the dating during the scan, so yeah... that's how big they are."

"Do you still want some of these, or are you okay with the fruits?" Mavuika offered a grainfruit wrap, that you took immediately as she sat down next to you.

"The fruits were hours ago..." you acknowledged while Mavuika chuckled, taking a bite of her own wrap.

"Citlali and the Traveller brought Oronon to the Speaker's Chamber. He was working with The Captain to protect Citlali. The things children will do to protect their parents, or grandparents in this case..." Mavuika eyed you, and how you were not acknowledging how your bump was beginning to develop.

"I... am in over my head with twins. Especially if they take after you. As perfect as they are, as perfect as you are... you are a handful, darling." You chuckled, before grimacing slightly.

"Are you alright?"

"Heartburn... finding out its twins explains why everything is so intense." You admitted, taking a moment to phrase your question but only one word came out, "twins..."

"Indeed. Twins. I admit I do feel a mix of excitement and dread at telling people. I feel excitement for our two miracles, but dread because your sisters reacted so well when they found out about you are pregnant." Mavuika gently brought your feet up into her lap, her fingers running up and down your calves as you listened to her speak.

"We can keep it our secret for now, until we can process it ourselves. We also- travelling back to my tribe has risks. If the abyss strikes... Mavuika, I'm scared." Your girlfriend's hands froze at the words of your confession, meeting your worried eyes as she nodded.

"It is dangerous, but we will create plans to get you and your family to the stadium safely. I know you would not recover if I could not protect them all... I can't save everyone, as much as I hope my plan will, but I will not lose you, or our children to the abyss. Natlan will live, and our children will be born in a time of peace."

"Everything is so risky, and to think we had a plan to throw Chuychu in a hot spring so she'd finally relax. The stress isn't good for her, it'll make fighting the abyss harder than fighting weaponless. I still don't know where my sisters hid mine. Xilonen forged it and everything..." it felt like you flew through five conversation topics at once as Mavuika blinked, processing everything.

"That was tomorrow, wasn't it? If I make the necessary arrangements, you three could still travel to Toyac Springs. I can also contact Mualani and other warriors there to help. If there was an attack, I know Chasca can fight and Chuychu can throw stink bombs, but we are on the precipice of war." Mavuika sighed, her hands continuously running up and down your calves as her head and her heart fought.

Her head would keep you at the safest place, the stadium. The tribes could fall, but the sacred flame would be the final line...

"Whatever you're thinking, you've been through every possibility. There is another option than travelling to the hot springs. We bring the hot springs here... since we have the hot tub in the bathroom... throw Chuychu in that, I help Chasca preen her feathers and get a nap in, all while we're safe here? Not the most idealic environment but..."

"I'll make the travel arrangements." Mavuika gently moved your legs as she stood up and made her way over to the door, much to your confusion, "you and your sisters deserve some time together, and Toyac Springs is easier terrain to navigate back to the stadium than coming back from Quahuacan Cliff."

"That's your reasoning?" you raised an eyebrow, but it wasn't like Mavuika could say that she had a feeling no news would reach her until tomorrow night, could she?

"I have two conditions however," Mavuika raised her hand to gesture two fingers, "one, Chasca throws Chuychu in the hot spring. No heavy lifting for you..." you nodded, agreeing with your lover's condition, "the second one, I know you know not to go in the hot springs but..."

"I'm stealing your clothes to wear. Well, I already do, but if I can't take you with me, I'm taking your clothes." You folded your arms, waiting for your archon to complain, but she only pouted, muttering about not getting to see you in a swimsuit.

"You say that like it would fit." Avoiding Mavuika's gaze turn from a whiny pout to soft concern about to say something, you shook your head.

"Oversized t-shirt and shorts, out of the hot springs, having a nap after helping Chasca preen her feathers, and Chuychu is relaxing in the hot springs. Both sisters none the wiser that I am carrying twins." You ran through the options, checking off each point with your fingers as Mavuika nodded, walking over to cup your cheeks with her hands, pressing a kiss to your forehead.

"Exactly."

"Excuse me?" your fingers froze in between preening Chasca's hair, having been trying to redo her braid for a while.

"You're keeping something from us." Chasca stated, turning around to look you in the eye.

"Do I need to push you in the hot spring? I'd get Mualani to throw you in, but I'd rather not have a repeat of whatever you two fought about when you were younger, after you and Chuychu ditched me with mama at the Masters of the Night-Wind." You began to babble, trying to distract Chasca, and keep Chuychu from getting suspicious.

It had taken a bit just to persuade her to take a day off, getting her into her swimwear was a different argument, and it took her a while to get over Chasca picking her up and tossing her in the hot spring. Forgive us, Atea, for we have sinned...

"Are you and the baby okay?" Chasca quietly asked, her gaze softening as she tried to read your expression.

"We're fine. Size of plums- a plum, you know?" At least you didn't lie through your teeth there, it was true. The baby was the size of a plum... both of them were.

"So, is it you and Mavuika?"

"We're fine. Just expecting the worse with us being on the precipice of war. She's worried about us all going back home to the tribe, in case there's anything happens. With how things get with Ochkanatlan's abyss levels..." you trailed off, eyeing how Chuychu looked like she was asleep in the hot spring, but she wasn't.

"Chuychu stop eavesdropping."

"I am not!" Chuychu retorted, her green eyes meeting yours as you gave her a look, watching her carefully as she rolled her eyes and laid back in the hot spring.

"We are fine... all of us are fine. Now let me finish your braid so you can go brood while I get a nap in, okay? After I drink... all this water... where's Xilonen with the xocoatl when you need her?" you grumbled, ignoring how Chasca raised an eyebrow, letting out a huff before she let you continue fixing her hair.

"You know you need to hydrate." Chasca's voice was soft, letting out a breath as she tried to relax, her shoulders sinking down as you continued to braid.

"Yes, but having to pee so much is annoying." You huffed, finishing Chasca's braid and gently placing it on her shoulder, before you stood up, "like I said, annoying!"

"Any idea what she's hiding from us? She had a scan yesterday-" Chuychu began, but Chasca only stared at her.

"The entire purpose of this trip was for you to relax, not worry more about her. She'll tell us when she's ready. Plus, she was telling the truth. She's fine, the baby's fine, and her relationship is fine."

"So it's something else-"

"Chuychu, listen to your sisters and relax in the hot spring!" Chasca cut her off, slightly louder than she should have been, as she looked up, spotting you returning to from the toilets.

"Because arguing is totally relaxing..." you folded your arms momentarily, before picking up one of the towels from the pile Chasca had made into a nest for you to lay on, wrapping it around yourself before settling for a nap.

"See, the nest wasn't a bad idea." Chasca gestured, hearing Chuychu giggle as you cracked open an eye to look at her.

"You're helping me up next time I have to pee. Now, shush, relax time... as much as you can in these conditions..." you trailed off, tucking a wrapped up towel between your knees to help support you as you went to sleep.

Chasca shook her head, deciding against getting her hair and feathers wet in the hot spring, instead setting near your towel nest to keep watch over you, and in turn, Chuychu, who had closed her eyes to try relax more.

Taking another look around, Chasca frowned slightly. Why was that baby koholasaur so interested in you? She'd noticed the baby yumkasaurs staring at you on the way from the stadium here too... could saurians sense the hormonal changes from your pregnancy?

"Chasca, I can walk... you don't need to carry me back to the stadium!" you grumbled, having given up on trying to climb out of Chasca's arms a while ago. Her grip wasn't rough, but she was not letting you go.

"You were walking with your eyes closed, one second away from sleeping." Chuychu pointed out, rubbing at her eyes as she walked, holding back a yawn.

"So were you!" you huffed, folding your arms.

"If I could carry you both, I would, but neither of you are exactly-"

"Do not finish that sentence." Chasca hesitated at your warning tone, changing her next words immediately.

"-kids anymore. It was easier to pick you both up when you were toddling around with Ororon."

"Uh, speaking of Ororon? Wait, is that him?" Chuychu began to point, but your eyes widened, spotting the taller figure with the electro vision wielder, the Traveller, and Paimon.

"We need to get back to the stadium. Now. Quietly... That's the Captain!" you whispered, tugging on Chasca's bandana to get her attention, then trying to reach over to Chuychu, but she whacked your hands away.

"Right... wait, was that Citlali who just ran by us?" Chasca's eyes widened, spotting the pastel pink blur speed by the three of you, whipping up a cloud of dust as she went.

"I think so. Well, Ororon's done for." Chuychu confirmed as the three of you began to hurry back to the stadium.

"Chasca, put me down please, we can move faster if you're not trying to carry me like a baby-" you began to grumble, wondering how many people had been working out just to carry you around.

"Technically-"

"It doesn't count, they haven't been born yet."

It is no secret that I hate you, and you hate me. We are sworn enemies as by our background. Beyond putting an arrow through your skull, I have little desire to ever have an interaction with you. Your pathetic existence repulses me.

It is becoming increasingly obvious that you; for whatever reason, seem to have a great deal of information in regards to the inner workings and nature of the four Divine Beasts. I supose them being ancient Sheika technology means that you must have some history with them.

You are pleased for the rise of this ancient technology that your people created and feel as though the Beasts should remain unburied and thrive, and as her designated Pilot I have a responsibility to keep her safe and in working order.

You shall provide me with information to aid in Medoh's well being, and in return I shall offer you the payment of taking mercy on the next Yiga assassin that attempts to cross me. Also this one bunch of mighty bananas enclosed, which I had to fly all the way to Faron to aquire.

In short. Usually I would request the Princesses aid or perhaps Purah when it comes to any technical issues regarding Medoh. However; ever since her release from the Demon King's filthy paws, she has been making a strange clunking sound intermittently from the lower back energy core behind her main control panel. When questioned about it, both Purah and the Princess insisted it was likely just rusted gears that could be fixed with a little oil - as if I hadn't already thought of that possibility and done as such. Honnestly their dismissive attitudes about it frustrated me.

Which I'm certain is obvious by the fact I have sunk low enough to resort to coming to you for advice.

Vah Medoh is in... pain. I know she is a machine and machines don't feel pain, I am not a fool. I admit I don't know how to explain that I know this, I just do. I want to help her, even if it means turning to...distrustful sources. I am unsure where else to turn.

I would like to clarify that this is not an invitation to approach the Divine Beast. If you come within a ten foot radius of her or attempt to board, I will not hesitate to send you away looking like a porcupine. This is merely a request for information exchange. If you know what could be the cause for Vah Medoh's distress, and know how to fix it, I implore you to share it with me, just on this one occasion.

Given that he’s the leader of the wizards and undoubtedly has other responsibilities, Strange spends what Tony suspects is an unreasonable amount of time with him in the new lab the Sanctum has created. He’s not sure if he should be happy about that, because he’s taking Strange away from work that might oppose the Avengers, or concerned, because Strange leads a whole order of sorcerers and his interest in keeping Tony around won’t necessarily hold up against all of them if they get annoyed about it. Mostly, Tony tries not to think about it.

He’s not thinking about a lot of things.

And of course the best way to not think about anything is to get very distracted thinking about something else. Trying to design instruments to detect a type of energy that science has never recorded before works beautifully. Well, it works as long as he’s got Strange there, casting spells for Tony to test his experimental designs on. When Strange is called away his mystical duties, all Tony has to go off of is theory.

He’s spinning himself slowly on a stool and contemplating his observations of Strange’s magic when someone knocks on the lab door. It’s not Strange, he’d just left. “Come in,” Tony calls out warily.

The door opens to reveal a woman, mid-thirties, dark hair and eyes. She’s holding a small wooden box. “My name is Master Sangita Rayamajhi. Doctor Strange said I could work with you if you agreed.”

Tony’s eyebrows fly up. He’d thought Strange wanted to keep Tony to himself. Or maybe the other sorcerers were avoiding him; Tony has hardly seen any of them despite living in the Sanctum. “Work on what?”

“Re-creating relics,” Sangita says. “No living member of the Order has created a relic. The knowledge has been lost. I have been working for a decade to rediscover it. Doctor Strange says that you’re trying to understand our magic. Our work seems complementary.”

“You’re not afraid of what I could learn and take back to the Avengers?” Tony asks.

“If we can re-create even a single relic, it would be worth any amount of information you took to them,” Sangita says firmly.

Tony nods, but doesn’t wave her inside yet. “I thought maybe the other wizards didn’t approve of Strange’s interest in me.” Sangita says nothing, and eventually Tony adds, “Will your colleagues be upset that you’re working with me?”

She relaxes slightly. “Not at all. Most people are very pleased that you’re here. Doctor Strange is much happier. It was frustrating when we thought it was an impossible relationship, but now it doesn’t seem so impossible. We thought that you might not be comfortable talking to us, and we didn’t want to risk driving you away. But you like to work, and this is work.”

Tony finds himself smiling a little, bemused at the thought of the dangerous Masters of the Mystic Arts tip-toeing around lest they upset Strange’s crush. When was the last time the Avengers gave a second thought to whether something would upset him? 

“Come on in,” Tony says, waving her towards the stool that Strange uses when they’re working together. 

Sangita crosses the space briskly and sets the box down on the table. “These,” she says, opening it, “are sending stones. They transmit voices. I thought a relic that served the same purpose as a known technology would be a logical place to start.”

“It’s an excellent place to start,” Tony says, dismissing his notes and opening a new document. “Demonstrate them for me.”

I realised that info on her backstory got lost to the ages when I impulsively deleted my side blog, so now is as good a time as any to drop it here! (under the cut)

this is Kan's backstory leading up to her meeting Echo in technical devotion. some of these things come up in the story as Echo finds out about them, but it's not necessary for the reader to find out that way (aka, this has spoilers but I don't care if you don't care). tw: torture

—childhood & before the war

As a child Kan was always interested in working with technology. She was an only child and lived with her parents in a small village on the planet of their people, Mirial. Kan's parents were young when they had her, and were very loving, though they didn't spoil her. Instead they instilled in her the value of selflessness and taught her to always help people where possible. Her mother was an archaeologist of sorts, and spent much of her time researching and writing papers on rooting the truth to the myths of sites that were believed to be affected by divine intervention. Her father owned a small repair shop that tended to anything from ship repairs to cybernetics.

With Mirial being located on a hyperspace route, Kan's father's repair shop garnered attention from the wider galaxy, and Kan got to meet all different sorts of people, fuelling her desire to explore the galaxy herself. Kan undertook many small technological projects throughout her childhood, but her biggest undertaking happened when her mother lost her leg below the knee after a tunnel collapsed in on her during an archaeological dig. Kan and her father constructed a cybernetic for her when she was just thirteen, and that's when Kan knew that she wanted to pursue engineering.

When Kan turned 17, she left home to do exactly that. She lived on the ship that she and her father had been building for a number of years, and travelled around doing repairs and any other technological gigs she could find. She enjoyed her time doing this, but she really desired to do more, and help people in a more meaningful way.

Shortly after the clone war broke out, Kan got into a bit of trouble when she was caught in the Separatist occupation of Ryloth. She was running away from a battalion of droids, and was cornered when Master Luminara Unduli singlehandedly defeated the droids to save her. Kan thanked her and offered her services to her as repayment for saving her life. The Mirialan Jedi felt a kinship with Kan due to their shared origins, and what started out as one job turned into a partnership that stretched the length of the war. Kan began working as an engineer, but was also trained as a field medic when her presence was questioned by a number of the members of the jedi council. She became close with a lieutenant in the 41st named Spider, who took her under his wing and looked after her as much as she would allow, as she was still quite young and had very little experience of war and the galaxy at large.

Over the course of the war, Kan gradually earned her face tattoos, tallying up important moments. She got the central diamond first, and the more lives she saved and technological developments she made for the republic, the more she got, stretching outward across her cheeks. During a particularly gruelling campaign on Felucia, which had many casualties, Kan was captured by the Separatists. She was held prisoner and her captors were insisting that she was Master Unduli's padawan. They questioned, and eventually tortured her for information about Unduli's battle strategy, but she resisted. She was rescued and sent to recuperate from the chemical burn injuries she sustained across her shoulders and collarbone, which is where she briefly met Fives. He was suffering from his own injuries, and grieving the recent death of his brother.

Kan continued to work with Master Unduli up until the end of the war. She was on Kashyyyk with her when order 66 was given, and when she tried to interfere, confused at the clones' sudden shift in behaviour, the clones turned on her too. She narrowly escaped death at the hands of her good friend Spider, and went into hiding.

Kan returned to travelling around and doing repairs, though it was hard to stay off of the Empire's radar. Eventually, someone replied to a distress signal that she had put out immediately after the events of order 66, and offered her safety from the Empire. She then worked as a mechanic in a workshop on Alderaan, under the protection of Senator Bail Organa. For a while, Kan struggled to come to terms with how the war ended, and came to dislike her tattoos because they served as an obvious reminder that her efforts and the efforts of the clones around her were all for nought.

While visiting the planet, Organa urged Senator Riyo Chuchi to speak with Kan, and that's where she first learned of the clone underground. She was immediately eager to help them, after working with clones so closely before, and partly with the hopes of reuniting with some of her friends from the war.

BMFM ‘06 Revamped Infodump (Part 1)

Wanted to take the time to talk about some of my ideas concerning BMFM ‘06 Revamped as I started having a little bit of a rundown of how it would go:

- A major change to the latest art I posted is that the context behind it will be scrapped. Even though it wasn’t exactly going to make the final cut, I didn’t want to steer anyone to the wrong direction. Although I don’t mind too much of it being overused, the cats vs. mice trope is pretty uninteresting and it’s about time to give it a rest. I originally had Cataclysm be the Supreme Ruler and Commander of the Catatonians since despite being second in command to Hairball, he was the one calling the shots which didn’t make sense because it should’ve been his brother's job. He could still be included while the rest of the cats are discarded by being a part of the "Villain of the Week" shenanigans, but I think it'd be better to keep the Plutarkians as the main antagonists along with the rats and the Sand Raiders.

- I don’t know how many years this would take place after the events of the ‘93 series, but it would be somewhere between 4-10 years. Within that period of time, Mars would be in the process of recovery known as “the Martian Rebirth”, meant to restore the planet back to its original glory along with improving the technology and weaponry.

- Aside from some changes, Stoker's role in the story remains the same. He invents the Regenerator as a way to speed up the Martian Rebirth’s progress. Nobody knows about the device, not even the government, although Stoker prefers to keep it a secret until it’s finished and successfully tested. The only thing keeping the Regenerator from completion is it lacked a power source. It was then that Stoker tried out the first option: tetra-hydrocarbons. He proceeds to work on the Regenerator, further lengthening his absence to the point where everyone began worrying about his whereabouts (and no, he will not be regarded as a traitor; that concept has been passed to another character who I’ll explain in the next section). Soon enough, the countless hours he spent cooped up in his underground base, experimenting and modifying his invention, led to him getting overexposed to the power source without him realizing until later on (that being him mutating into a wererat in broad daylight). As a result, he operates at night and wears a heavy layered outfit and his helmet to shield himself from sunlight around daytime. Stoker spends the rest of the time helping the Biker Mice stop Plutark and searching for a new power source for the Regenerator. And of course, Limburger steals the invention to redesign it into a weapon of mass destruction to finish what the failed Tug Transformer started. During Plutark’s defeat, the Regenerator sadly gets destroyed before it could annihilate Mars and Earth. Despite everyone's dismay, Stoker reassures them, having learned that healing takes time and shouldn't be rushed as the device was doomed to fail the second the tetra-hydrocarbons began to affect him.

- Harley rarely got much screen time as she has only appeared in four episodes out of the 93 in total and I feel like she deserves some more spotlight. If you’ve seen the very last episode of ‘93 BMFM, then you know that she gets captured by Mace. A search mission was held soon after, but got discontinued months later. The only people that didn’t give up were the ones who witnessed it, that being the Biker Mice, Stoker, and Rimfire. Harley serves as Plutark’s and the rats’ spy (against her will) under her alter ego “Nightshift”. Like the Masked Motorcyclist (aka Charley), she appears every now and then to help out the Biker Mice whilst never speaking a word and secretly gaining information to send to the enemy. At one point, Harley escapes the clutches of evil and makes way to the good side where she reveals her true identity and warns them about Limburger’s master plan. Before the good guys could jump to conclusions, they get ambushed by Limburger’s goons. Harley buys them time to escape as a series of missiles strike the hideout and she gets the left side of her face blown off. After getting captured (again), Karbunkle uses the rebuilt Mind Bender Beam to brainwash Harley into being completely loyal to Plutark. The Biker Mice and Stoker break into the laboratory to save Harley, but the damage had already been done. As Harley begins to wreak havoc, Stoker chases after her to try and break her out of Plutarkian control. The two have a massive brawl until Stoker hits Harley with the good old “I know that brain of yours, it’s too stubborn to get brainwashed" and it snaps her back to reality. Harley helps defeat Plutark, and if I were really silly, sacrifices her life in the process with her last words being along the lines of how her main goal was to help Mars and the people she loved, yet she has done nothing but wasted it and it’s time she’d accomplished it while she still can.

- At first, I had no ideas on what to do with Rump considering I couldn’t care less about him, but after some thinking, I came up with an episode idea. His origin was the only interesting part about him, going from a car salesman to a corrupt millionaire, and I think it would be nice to have him be brought up by Limburger as a way for one to carry out the schemes while the other distracts the Biker Mice.

- In the end, Charley wants to go to Mars with the Biker Mice but has a heart-to-heart talk with Vinnie where he convinces her to stay on Earth to act as a satellite for when the planet gets into danger again. What they do next is all up for debate, have a bittersweet hug, kiss, etc. I do think it’d be cute for Charley to say, “You better write this time” and Vinnie happily responding “As you wish” or something like that.

Tech

Our shy Tech uses social media to find out things about you, even before you're a couple. Stalker? Yes and no. Basically, he just uses it to try to find out what music you like, what movies, if you like to read, and if so, what books. Tech spends a lot of time browsing.

He is looking for information about you that will make it easier for him to start a conversation with you, to surprise you in a positive way and to respond to you. Tech feels more confident approaching you when he already has some background information.

But he also likes to check in on things in the future, keep up to date. He's often in the tunnel at work, and that's how he finds out if he's missed anything when he's on a mission. Maybe you've discovered a new favorite song, or something culinary, or you're reading a new book.

Of course, he doesn't miss the opportunity to send you links to reports, documentaries and the like, about whatever he's excited about. The last link was a report about upcoming, groundbreaking new hyperspace technology.

Hunter

He has no idea about social media, he himself has had no contact with it until now, and Hunter has never been interested in it. Until Wrecker points out to him that you're on social media.

"Have you seen that funny Loth cat video your sweetheart shared?"

Hunter frowns.

"What, shared, I don't quite understand."

Wrecker shows and explains everything to him in general terms, and Hunter ends up making a social media account on the Holonet. The cat video was amusing, but not the reason. He wants to know what else you share, if maybe there are hobbies he doesn't know about, or events you'd like to attend.

In fact, three days later he surprises you with tickets to an event you're dying to attend, but can't find the money in time.

Hunter doesn't spy on you, you can do whatever you want. He just picks out a few little things, like this event, to make you happy.

Echo

He stays away from it completely. In fact, he hates this social media nonsense. There was even a whole format of its own for clones, and he remembers well how some of his brothers used to act online. He doesn't really need that.

You can do whatever you want, of course, but he won't touch that stuff unless you explicitly ask him to. Echo still won't spend much time on it, just occasionally liking one of your shared posts, but that's all you can expect from him.

Echo is not comfortable on the Holonet, it's not nearly the same, yet it always kind of reminds him of his imprisonment by the Techno Union.

"You spend way too much time with this devil stuff".

Wrecker

He is all over the place. Wrecker has an account on every social media site, and he posts as regularly as he can. Cute and funny animal videos mostly and in stark contrast, videos of explosions. Every now and then a music video and articles about guns and explosives.

In fact, he bombards his pages so hard that sometimes you completely lose track of what's going on and don't really manage to keep up. But Wrecker miraculously knows, despite his own constent-posting, what's going on with you in social media.

Among other things, you once posted a picture of him when an admirer wouldn't leave you alone. After endless attempts to get rid of him and several block attempts whereupon the nag just kept making new accounts, you shared Wrecker's picture in full gear, with you next to him.

"This is my boyfriend, if you want me, work it out with him".

Wrecker drops the holopad laughing and says, "What's going on? You didn't tell me that someone was bugging you."

You shrug your shoulders, "Always wrote to me privately. I thought it was time to expose that person."

"Hm," growls Wrecker, "Let me know if he doesn't stop."

Crosshair

One of those who talk badly about social media, very badly, avoid it for quite a while and then suddenly sink into it almost like an addict. Crosshair has his holopad in his hand every free minute, checking his messages, new links and likes.

Crosshair will never admit it, but he really enjoys the attention, being anonymous in a way and still being noticed. Of course, he also digs through your social media, and you can assume that he scrutinizes everything.

He knows the guys who are on the Internet, make immoral offers, send nude pictures and want to have nude pictures and so on. Otherwise, he flies over the things rather so casually, he's not really interested, he rather wants his contributions to be seen, shared and liked.

TEEHEE. ok. im going to have to do a little bit of a lore dump for this one :3

Part of the Universe's Deal is that, as part of the Cycle, its religion is continuously merged with and then shunned from the Change religion and/or general consciousness. Hence the King not being a one-time thing. The most recent example of this is! The Yiga Clan's exile!

Backtrack "10,000 years" from AU present day. Back when the Divine Beasts and stuff were being used. In BotW a lot of the ancient Sheikah stuff has constellations all over it, so I took that and ran—in this AU, the ancient Sheikah worshipped the Universe, and Change as a part of the Universe rather than its own separate thing.

When the king of Hyrule got scared and made the Sheikah get rid of their technology, the Universe religion went with it. The Yiga Clan branched off to practice in relative secrecy and, until recently, mostly kept to themselves.

Over time the Universe fades from common knowledge and space as a concept begins to acquire a sort of taboo status; it's seen as very morbid and macabre. Outside perception of the Yiga Clan has also largely lost the context of being related to the Universe religion and now it's mostly seen as a group of religious fanatics doing weird shit in the desert. Space death cult masquerading as a sister clan to the Sheikah. The Sheikah specifically see them as traitors the Hyrule, and the Yiga see the Sheikah as traitors to the Universe.

Pre-Calamity, Sheikah researchers were looking into the old Universe religion a lot because the information needed to find and access the Divine Beasts and defeat the Calamity are in a sort of stars-based code version of the Ancient Sheikah language. But the Yiga keep most of the information to themselves and aren't very keen on sharing it unless you're joining them, so they're a bit stuck—

But then a Yiga kid comes along and pulls the Master Sword. So after freaking out about an evil cult member being the Hero the Sheikah are like. Well that's perfect actually. Free under-socialized child to groom into a Hero AND get Universe knowledge from! Win-win!

And this kid, of course, is Siffrin. About 14 or 15, probably. I'll say the Calamity happens when he's abouut 25?

In present day the Yiga are salty about having their fucking kid stolen from them by the wretched traitor Sheikah and so are trying to steal back the Hero. And hey at least the King/Calamity, senseless as it is, RESPECTS the Universe. So fuck you actually. We're killing the Chosen too.

So now Siffrin, dealing with amnesia and just trying not to die, is being followed around by weirdly familiar cult members who are trying to kidnap him and kill his friends. The Yiga are not winning themselves any favors.

As for Siffrin's relationship with the Sheikah... He respects them but he thinks they're all kind of strange because they treat him kind of strange. But then, he is strange. So...? Verdict uncertain. (Also, he kind of looks Sheikah? What with the hair, and the clothes... But apparently he isn't. Which is weird. What is he, then?)

It's probably good for them that Impa (who is still just Impa because there's nobody to replace her with) is the only person still around who worked directly with them pre-Calamity. Most saw them as little more than a tool. A dubiously trustworthy tool, at that.

...There's one other Sheikah who isn't weird to them. One of the guards.

Demon Slayer x Legend of Zelda (botw/totk). Hear me out.

The story starts with Link (farmer?? idk) who's already friends with Zelda, when something happens and she turns into a demon/monster (I see this as her still looking human but with features taken from her dragon form in totk - eyes, horns etc). It is revealed that this is the fault of Ganondorf, who is still the Demon King, and therefore Link must defeat him to turn Zelda back to a human/hylian.

He starts his training to be a demon slayer under the guidance of Impa, and starts taking on low-level threats of monsters/demons under the control of the Demon King. Purah still researches technology and helps Link with information about demons/monsters and ways to defeat them.

Zelda can still help Link out in difficult fights - similar to how she fights in Age of Calamity, or else with an ability similar to the time manipulation/rewind in Tears of the Kingdom. Towards the end of the game, she unlocks her anti-evil sealing power which gets the Demon King's attention, whereupon he seeks to overcome or steal her power.

The hashira are replaced by the champions (or the sages). Link spends time with each one, learning new skills and gaining strength.

The master sword, of course, is the equivalent of Yoriichi's katana.

Wanna Make a Deal? (Headcanon/Theory and some Alastor Analysis)

So I think about how deals work a lot and here's just some random headcanons/thoughts I have put together.

Deals are bound by a magic that even Lucifer himself can't control and doesn't completely understand. This is why even the royal family is wary of making deals. They cannot break them or alter them. Also, if a deal has no established consequence for breaking it, the one who breaks it forfeits their soul to the other party.

Using Charlie and Alastor's deal as an example. If Alastor had refused to tell her about the angels after making the deal, the deal would be broken and Charlie would not owe him a favor. Simple. However, now that Alastor has fulfilled his end of the bargain, Charlie is bound to uphold hers. If he cashes in the favor, as long as it is within the parameters of what they discussed, she cannot refuse. If she does, the deal is broken and he gets her soul.

But I think this consequence can be circumvented...if you're smart enough. The way to do that is to put a caveat in place should the deal be broken. Basically an "If I break this deal, X happens". This effectively stops your soul from being taken should you break the deal because a different consequence has already been decided. This method can also be used as a roundabout way to get out of other deals, aka "If you break this deal, then X deal is null and void." For example, let's say Angel Dust wanted something from Alastor, he could add the caveat that if Alastor doesn't uphold his end of the bargain, Husk gets his soul back. With this in place, Alastor is not at risk of losing his out soul if he breaks the deal.

This particular example covers another point though. In this deal, Angel's soul is also not at risk, because his soul is already owned by Valentino, so a smart dealmaker (which Alastor is) would demand a caveat should Angel break his side of the deal. Of course, if Angel did break the deal, it would eliminate any obligation for Alastor to uphold his side of the bargain, but that's assuming it was something he could easily withdraw. Like, if the deal was for Alastor to beat up Valentino and he had already done so, he can't take that back if Angel decides to withhold his end.

It's also important to keep in mind what kind of deal it is. Is it a cause-and-effect deal ("After I do X, then you will do Y") like Charlie's deal with Alastor? Or is it a simultaneous deal ("I will not do X if you do not do Y")? Cause-and-effect deals require one party to fulfill their end of the agreement before the other party needs to fulfill theirs (Charlie only owed Alastor the favor if he gave her the information ergo she could not fulfill her end until he fulfilled his). With simultaneous deals, both sides are in effect at the same time.

Timing is also incredibly important in deals, especially when it comes to cause-and-effect deals. Using Charlie and Alastor's deal as an example again, Alastor technically could have told her the information any time he wanted. Charlie didn't specify that he had to tell her right then and there. He did so because that was beneficial to him, but he didn't have to. He only promised that he would tell her what he knew. He could have waited years to give her that information.

Gonna end on this, but Alastor really is a master dealmaker. Of the deals we've seen him make, they are both skewed heavily in his favor. He can ask Charlie for anything at any time (provided it doesn't require her to hurt someone) and Vaggie can never, for all eternity, ask him to interact with TV technology. He had to do something once and now Charlie is at his beck and call and Vaggie is bound to uphold her end forever.

4K UHD Review: The Guyver

Following in the wildly successful footsteps of Batman and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Guyver takes a (relatively) grounded approach to its outlandish source material — in this case, a Japanese manga series — without divorcing itself from its comic book roots. Produced by Brian Yuzna (Re-Animator, Society), the 1991 film is directed by special effects wizards Screaming Mad George (Society, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master) and Steve Wang (Predator, The Monster Squad).

As the Star Wars-esque expository opening crawl explains, mankind was created by aliens as an organic weapon. The evil Chronos corporation is further developing a technology that allows humans to change into "super monster soldiers" known as Zoanoids for world domination. The only viable defense against them is The Unit, a piece of bio-booster alien armor that increases a human's natural powers a hundredfold, turning them into The Guyver.

Mark Hamill's top billing may lead you to believe that he's the titular hero, but he instead plays a supporting role as a CIA agent investigating Chronos. The real lead is Jack Armstrong (Student Bodies) as Sean Barker, an amateur martial artist who's the only person that can activate The Unit. When his girlfriend (Vivian Wu, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III) is endangered, Sean utilizes his newfound powers to take down Chronos and the Zoanoids.

Armstrong is a bland lead, but it's not entirely his fault. In addition to a mustachioed Hamill channeling Colombo, he has to compete with several scene-stealing character actors. Re-Animator's David Gale chews the scenery as the malevolent head of Chronos, briefly reuniting with Jeffrey Combs as the company's scientist, Dr. East (get it?). Michael Berryman (The Hills Have Eyes) plays Gale's right-hand Zoanoid with Jimmie Walker (Good Times) as his rapping goon. Linnea Quigley (The Return of the Living Dead) cameos as a scream queen.

But the real stars of the show are the creatures, the designs of which showcase boundless creativity. The Guyver looks like Ultraman by way of Clive Barker, and each Zoanoid adopts a different animal's traits. While a number of other artists were employed to pull off the myriad of monsters, George and Wang's fingerprints are all over the effects, imbuing the alien superhero movie with some disturbing body-horror.

Jon Purdy's script deviates significantly from source material not only in terms of story but also tone. While some of the manga's dark atmosphere and violence remain intact, it's undercut by goofy humor in an attempt to appeal to a younger demographic. Fans of Yoshiki Takaya's original creation were no doubt disappointed (Wang attempted a bit of a course correction with his 1994 sequel, Guyver: Dark Hero), but the tonal confusion is actually charming.

Originally cut down to a PG-13 rating in the US, The Guyver has been newly restored in 4K from the original, R-rated 35mm camera negative with DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 and 2.0 options for Unearthed Films' 4K UHD + Blu-ray release. Far removed from the days of Jaws and Alien in which the monster was largely hidden in shadows, George and Wang put their creations on full display — and even with a crystal-clear restoration, the in-camera effects shine.

Two new audio commentaries are included. The first is a lively one with George and Wang, moderated by Budget Biomorphs: The Making of The Guyver Films author Dom O’Brien. It's not the most informative track — the filmmakers admit to not having seen the film in over two decades — but they're enjoying themselves so much that it hardly matters. The second commentary features creature crew members "Evil" Ted Smith and Wyatt Weed, who delve into the nitty-gritty of the effects.

Yuzna and George each sit down for thorough new interviews. Yuzna reveals that he's been approached about a remake, but the rights are complicated, while George's infectious energy lasts the entire 56 (!) minutes. Creature suit camera test footage is included with commentary options from George and Wang or Smith and Weed, while outtakes and a gag reel feature George and Wang commentary.

Other extras include: alternate title sequences in English, German and Spanish; English, German, Spanish, and French trailers (all carrying the alternate title Mutronics); and extensive promotional and production galleries. The collector's edition also comes with the soundtrack CD composed by Matthew Morse (Silent Night, Deadly Night 5: The Toy Maker) and a booklet featuring liner notes by O’Brien and Morse.
