Respect Her Journey

I want to talk about this piece of art that Horikoshi drew that probably has bkdks hissing and screeching at the sight of, and izuochas fist-pumping and going yeaaah! my ship is endgame!

Nono, don't be afraid, look at it! It'll be okay I promise.

It's beautiful, I hate it, you might say, as a bkdk.

Anyway, this was the tweet I lifted this art from.

Oh yes, pay attention to them falling! Some people might take this to mean falling in love, or whatever. I cannot comment on what Horikoshi meant by this statement, because he has proven to be a cryptic little nuisance of a troll. I will however, examine his inspiration for this piece and tell you why this is not him saying that Izuocha is endgame.

Um, incoming spoilers for Spirited Away if that wasn't obvious. If you've not watched it, I implore you to do so yesterday. It's a one of the greatest movies of all time.

Spirited Away: a story about Chihiro, a timid girl who ventures into the spirit world for the sake of her parents. (Wait? What? Sound familiar?) There's more.

In order to redeem her parents, she starts working in an environment that showcases all the worst parts of capitalist society

She befriends a boy named Haku, who she goes on adventures with

She meets No Face, a child-like spirit who lacks love and eats people while taking on their characteristics

She gives Haku back his name and breaks his curse with the power of love

She saves her parents and returns to the normal world having grown from her adventure and faces the future with confidence

Can we please appreciate the parallels between these two stories?

Bathhouse -> Hero Society: The overseer takes Chihiro's name, who becomes Sen. Just like Ochaco becomes Uravity. The public no longer sees her as a child. She is now a hero and they are free to expect things from her, like to fight in a war on their behalf. Urakaka is now fighting against her own bathhouse.

Haku -> Deku: Chihiro gives Haku his name back, just like Ochaco gives Deku a new meaning to his name, breaking the curse that Deku means "useless". Ochaco draws strength from at first, but she has since come to realize he is not invincible and that he himself needs saving.

No-Face -> Toga Himiko: Chihiro fascinates No-Face. Just like Toga Himiko the unloved girl, is fascinated with Ochaco for her goodness and being everything that she longs to be. Urakaka's character arc is tied up with Himiko and her struggle to save her smile.

There's probably more to unpack here, but these are the few that stood out to me right away. I'm lazy.

Now that we've established that Ochaco is Chihiro and Deku is Haku, remember that this falling scene in the movie is the climax. This is where Chihiro recognizes Haku for who he is and gives him back his identity. It is both a hello and a goodbye.

OOoooh! But Haku and Chihiro are in love! a certain braindead subset might retort--just no. I shouldn't have to mention how problematic it is to ship a ten year old with anybody, or that Chihiro is based on a real ten year old girl that Miyazaki knew--there is plenty of evidence to suggest that Haku is Chihiro's dead older brother, but I won't get into that. Look it up if it interests you. In short, it's platonic. PLATONIC.

Anyway, though Chihiro and Haku have benefitted from their friendship, ultimately they are headed in different directions.

Just like Ochaco and Deku are headed in different directions.

So please, please, don't hate this art. It's beautiful. Just like Ochaco is a beautiful character who has worked hard to be who she is. Stop trying to pigeonhole her as the love interest. It's insulting and she's fought that role kicking and screaming.

I also leave this with you. It is an excerpt from an interview with Miyazaki on his movie Spirited Away:

I felt this country only offered such things as crushes and romance to 10-year-old girls, though, and looking at my young friends, I felt this was not what they held dear in their hearts, not what they wanted. And so I wondered if I could make a movie in which they could be heroines...

I'm not saying that Horikoshi is absolutely taking Miyazaki's intentions as his own, but it's something.

Izuku was sitting in his room, doing curls while waiting for a text; earlier that day, he had gotten a message from someone saying they wanted to come to see him, and after getting permission from Aizawa, he was waiting for them to announce their arrival. The young male's phone pings as he puts his weights on their stand; he picks up the device and smiles happily, discovering that the person had brought snacks they liked to eat when they were together.

Izuku's smile was wide, and as he opened the door to his room, he was greeted by his childhood friend and bullied, Katsuki Bakugo. "Why do you look so fucking happy, Deku?" Izuku's smile faded a little at the tone of Bakugous's voice, but his joy returned when his visitor texted him that they had arrived. Midoriya's joyful expression did fade as he stepped out into the hall in front of Bakugou before heading to the elevators that would take him down to the main entrance.

The poor boy did not expect all of the girls at the front entrance, crowding a beautiful girl with H/L H/C hair and beautiful Morpho Butterfly wings on her back, folded down to save space. The girl was being bombarded with questions, mostly from Mina Ashido and Urakaka Ochaco. "Y/n!!" The winged girl perked up instantly, spreading her wings and using them to push the group of girls away from her. Her smile brightened as she removed her shoes and lowered her wings; she put on a pair of slippers and rushed over with the bag of snacks and treats she had brought for her boyfriend.

Katsuki had finally come out of the hall, suddenly confused about why Y/n was in the dorms and a little upset he wasn't told she was coming. "What the hell are you doing here, Y/n??" Although they were related, Y/n's quirk had caused her hair color to change. Fortunately, she still had the striking red eyes of her mother and brother. Everyone had figured she was her for him, but they were wrong. "Onii-chan? Did Izu not tell you??" everyone was puzzled; she was on a first name, let alone a nickname, based on Midoriya. The girl then looks around the room before laughing softly. "Wow, you held to your promise Izuku! You didn't even tell my brother!!"

Scratched the back of his head in embarrassment, cheeks slightly red. "hehe... A promise is a Promise, N/n, and I probably wouldn't have survived this long had I told Kacchan" Y/n smiles more. "Good point; Katsu probably would have kicked your butt" Y/n turns to everyone in the room, facing away from Izuku and Her brother. "Hello! My name is Bakugou Y/n! I am Katsuki's younger sister by one hour, and I am Izuku's girlfriend" Everyone's eyes when wide, and Katsuki filled with rage, but before her brother could do anything to Izuku, she looked back at him with the harshest glare. "Hurt him, and I fill your closet with clothes moths."

Y/n soon returned to her cheerful demeanor, successfully terrifying her brother with a woman's wrath, and grabbed Izuku's hand. "I made him promise to keep me a secret until I was ready, and I got lonely today, so I thought, why not!" Once everyone calmed, they returned to their activities, aside from the few who decided to spy on Izuku and Y/n; what she didn't tell them was that she was a model and social media influencer for her high school, considering Y/n wanted people to be excited about not being a hero and that you can be helpful to in so many other ways, she was studying to be an entomologist with a specialization in butterflies since they don't fly away from her.

Y/n was leaning against Izuku, reaching her hand into the bag of dried squid she was sharing with Izuku as she read comments on her most recent post to social media; she was trying on some wing-friendly clothes that looked good on her. However, the comments about her eyes were starting to hurt her. "She gorgeous, but she needs to do something about the color of her eyes" "Her eyes make her look like a villain" "Her eyes ruin her whole look" "I wish her eyes were purple; that would make her cuter and less like a villain" shortly after putting her phone down, she felt Izuku's hand on her face, wiping away silent tears she hadn't even noticed rolling down her face "N/n... hey... you okay?" Izuku's genuine concern for her made her sniffle; tears began rolling down her face.

"Do you know where I could get some colored contacts?" She choked through her tears, her voice quiet and broken. "Why? Is there something wrong with your sight?" Izuku began to worry, knowing that people were not kind to her about the red color of her eyes. "N/n... are people saying things about your eyes again" The girl only began to cry more before being engulfed into a warm bear hug as Izuku laid down and rubbed the back of her head. "It's okay; it doesn't matter what they say; your eyes are gorgeous and are the best part of your face" Y/n laughed through her sobs and cuddled into her boyfriend's chest before falling asleep with a handful of dried squid.

The two that were spying on them, Mina and Ochaco, smiled softly at how loving Izuku was and ran off to tell the other girls about it, not seeing Izuku press a few kisses into Y/n's forehead or letting her nap until she either got up or had to go home. Izuku was happy he could make her feel better, and that her tears were gone with the wind, and for the rest of the day, they lay like that until Y/n had to go home.

Ochako Uraraka Headcanons

She grew up very poor so when Christmas rolls around she always gets overwhelmed with just how much food and gifts there are. She has to take some time to sit in her room and calm down before joining everyone in the festivities

She loves anything thats raspberry flavored

Loves to go swimming cause she feels weightless without having to use her quirk. She'll spend hours & hours in the water if you let her

Was really insecure growing up cause she's got brown hair & eyes and was bullied for being "poor & plain looking". She's moved past it and likes herself now but she'll still get pretty upset if she hears anything negative about her eyes

Absolutely terrified of spiders. If she sees one and there's nothing to climb on top of, she'll make herself float. And then she'll proceed to scream for someone to come kill it. And everyone jokes at her for being a very brave hero but can't stand up to a little spider.

Class 1-A and Music

What are everyone's favorite genres/bands?

Midoriya- Obviously loves movie soundtracks. They take up most of his study playlists and make him feel better when he doesn't feel good enough. If you asked him his second favorite genre, however, he'd e hard pressed. He relates a lot to the emotional lyrics of songs that bands like Set it Off or TOP release, but also admires the knowledge of music theory that comes with writing classical music.

Uraraka- Enjoys energetic soundtrack music, but also loves Imagine Dragons. When she and Kirishima work out together they listen to a lot of Warriors and Believers. When she and Bakugou spar they listen to the most dramatic, drum filled music they can find.

Iida Tenya- Listens to a lot of classical music, but has a secret. When he's alone, or only with his close friends, he knows more rap songs than you would think. He's naturaly indisposed towards speaking quickly, with clear pronounciation. Thus, Tensei began training his little brother in rap songs, which he got from Hizashi Yamada. However, it is Iida, so whenever there's a curse word he replaced it with a much nicer word.

Asui Tsuyu- Is a chillstep person. She also listens to a lot of nature sounds at night. She's very atuned to nature, so listening to rain sounds or waves is extra soothing for her.

Todoroki- Was never that into music, until Jirou of all people introduced him to Twenty One Pilots and Billie Eilish. His favorite song is Ride now.

Bakugou- He does not blast his music. Whenever people hear loud music they assume it's him. It not him. He actually uses music to train his hearing, and thus keeps it at 2 decibels when he doesn't use his earphones. He's gonna have just as good hearing as Shoji- and Jirou, f you. Listens to a lot of angry punk music, but QUIETLY.

Kirishima- As mentioned earlier, he loves Imagine Dragons, and has been trying to convert Uraraka and Bakugou to Classic Rock. However, he proudly know the lyrics to every single Taylor Swift song, courtesy of Hagakure and Mina.

Kaminari- He appreciates a good dubstep, mostly since it goes with his electric aesthetic. However, he and Mina share a love of American Pop and K-Pop which no one in 1-A can rival. He also finds 8-bit music super fun to listen to (and bug Bakugou with).

Sero- Has some of the most diverse music tastes. He appreciates chillstep, classic rock, and indie music a lot, but his parents listened a lot of classical guitar while he was growing up and it stuck with him. He listens to it a lot at night when he's trying to go to sleep. Mina has also force-taught him several K-Pop songs.

Mina- All pop. All the time. Every day. She's one of those fun people who's always jiving to SOMEthing, whether it be music in her headphones, a beat in her head, or her or someone else humming. She and Kaminari often get together and have mini dance parties, and she's been able to teach her fellow Bakusquad members a few of her favorite songs.

Jirou- ALSO doesn't blast her music. If she did, she'd blow her earjacks out! She has a love of Angry Punk Music as well, and recently Shinsou got her into a band called Set It Off- and she's been listening to Wolf in Sheep's Clothing on repeat for the last few days. Jirou actually really enjoys listening to things on repeat. It gives her a chance to really listen to the various instruments, percussion, the way the vocalists express themselves, etc.

Yaomomo- Grew up with classical music constantly in the background, so if you're listening to anything remotely classical, chances are Yaomomo has heard it. However, Jirou convinced her to try listening to Imagine Dragons (her easiest entry band to the more angsty music) and Yaomomo has been so! Invigorated! By 'Warriors' and 'Believer!' She's definitely going to listen to more.

Ojiro- Is right with Sero in classical guitar. He finds instrumental music and culturally traditional music interesting and oftentimes soothing. It's one of the things he tries to share with others, although of them all only Midoriya, Aoyama, and Hagakure have really sat down and listened attentively with him.

Hagakure- Isn't quite as obsessed with K-Pop as Mina, but has one or two favorite groups, namely Red Velvet and Astro. She's very open to most types of music though, and is willing to give anything a listen at least once.

Koda- He doesn't listen to very much real music, but when he does he listens to classical music(something he hadn't thought of until Momo suggested it). However, he lives for Ambience Mixer, and has several self made tracks of forests and river scenes to listen to while he studies or sleeps. He really likes having white noise in the background to focus.

Shoji- Prefers the sound of silence to music, honestly, but a year or two ago someone gave him a pan flute, and he practices it religiously. He finds its origins fascinating, and the sound calming (when played correctly). It's one of his few and favorite personal possessions.

Tokoyami- THIS ONE. HE IS THE ONE WHO BLASTS THE MUSIC. He is obsessed with Screamo and Punk Rock, let's be honest. He listens to every album the second it comes out. He also has carefully curated playlists on Spotify for every emotion a person could feel. 'Eternal Banquets of Darkness?' Check. 'Difficult Homework Rage Focus?' Check. 'Dark Shadow Got Out of Control Recovery?' Double check.

Sato- Listens to podcasts, not music. He has to have something in the background all the time, but prefers to listen to baking podcasts or video game playthroughs. If others are playing music nearby though, he doesn't mind listening. The only music he doesn't like is Screamo, Tokoyami.

Aoyama- He's up for anything- as long as it has those magical percussion chimes that sounds like magic (y'all feel me? I forget what they're called). The people who have the most luck with him are Izuku and Ojiro. He occasionally attempts to dance with Mina and Kaminari, but he usually throws the glitter too hard and gives himself a cramp.

Mineta- Doesn't listen to music as much as stupid reaction videos on YouTube. It's usually about the newest weeaboo pillows or posters, but he enjoys it enough to listen to it more than anything else.

Shinsou- Mostly listens to Angsty music, but at this point can't tell (and doesn't care) whether it comes from actual angst or aesthetic. He enjoys it, whatever. However, he's slowly grown to appreciate indie songs writers, and his favorite (positive) song is Chrysanthemum but Amber Rubarth.

Teacher Bonus Present Mic- The first thing people think of when they see Present Mic is Pop, right? Well that's only partially right. He has entire albums of rap songs memorized, so he has plenty of material to work with when chasing criminals. His personal favorite is Kindest Regards, by Witt Lowry.
