regain (Dragonsong) 

Robin nodded and nocked another arrow. Another wolf launched itself at him; he staggered back and his arrow flew wide. 

As he took a step back, trying to regain his footing, his good ankle buckled beneath him, and he fell. 

“Hey!” shouted Isi, and the wolf turned its attention to her. “Pick on someone your own size.”

Behind Isi, a woman lunged forward with a meat cleaver in her hands. 

“Stop!” Isi cried. 

The woman did actually hesitate. 

“Killing them won’t bring a single child back,” said Isi. “It gains you nothing.” 

“Neither does letting ‘em live,” grumbled someone else from further back. 

see (Dragonsong) (in which Robin tries to light a fire when it’s been raining all day. this is where we learn that SB is also a mage) 

“Fuck it,” he muttered, and made an upwards gesture. Even from a distance, the purple markings on his hands glowed from within. 

A second later, the fire roared to life.

“That’s illegal, you know,” remarked SB, emptying water out of his boot. “You trying to get us caught?” 

“I’d like to see you try and light this,” Robin snapped.

They spent a few more minutes silent, hoods up and heads down against the drizzling rain, until Robin broke it. “You’re really not going to turn me in?” 

“Unless you intend to repeat Sector Three, then yes.” 

“What?” 

“Three or four years ago—you’d have been a trainee then, I think. A mage got into Sector Three and tried to make it to the castle to hurt the king. They didn’t manage it, but they blew up half the sector instead.” 

“Oh. That. I can understand how that might look bad for you.” 

story (Dragonsong) 

“It’s beautiful,” breathed Robin behind her. 

Isi took a deep, slow breath. “It is.” Truly, she’d never seen anything like it. And she had orders to kill it. 

This creature was dangerous; even aside from the stories she’d been told, she could see sharp claws and a strong jaw. It couldn’t be allowed to continue terrorising others, and she had her orders. A king’s knight couldn’t disobey her orders, for whatever reason. It was up to the king to decide what should be done, and up to his knights to do it.

look, i made art!

so i’ve recently come into possession of a drawing tablet, and instead of writing for camp nano (which, i haven’t. at all. for real), i’ve drawn Jun from my wip like all things out of season!  he’s the only one i can properly visualise right now and ksjdflsd capturing that slightly disdainful + disinterested gaze was torture but here he is! hopefully i’ll get to draw some of my other OCs soon (also this is only like the second piece of art i’ve tried so please be forgiving and teach me how to do hair)

Last song I listened to: um. Probably something on my smoke playlist. A song that made me sad about cooper

Hobbies: sleeping, writing, games (I fall into weeks of "I only touch this game" ... often times they are the same games. Mass effect, dragon age, uh. Rdr2. Oh, fallout), daydreaming, reading wiki articles about space

Favorite colors: Green. But all of them are best. Blue is probably second favorite.

Last movie I watched: in full? ... oh jeez. Groundhog day maybe. I watch movies in like, fifteen minute intervals. It's hard for me to pay attention.

Favorite book: room by emma donoghue if I play with books that are finished. ...but all of raven's books are favorites

I think I’ve fleshed out this project to the point of making an introduction, so...welcome to Midnight Salvage!

Raina Strider is the newly-promoted captain of the Minerva - the smallest nuclear-powered submarine in the fleet, assigned to research and recovery operations on the seafloor. Hers is a ship of rules and regulations, running off the codes and manuals - until, one day, those rules no longer apply.

For something waits in the shipwrecks, lost long ago and never expected to rise again. Something pulled from the mud and sand by an unsuspecting claw, brought into the harsh lights of Irene Wolf’s laboratory. And in the searchlights, in the glare of her instruments, it begins to wake...

Cast:

Raina Strider (she/her): Captain of the Minerva and dedicated to the rules - there’s no room to make mistakes in a submarine, not when one could send them all to the bottom of the ocean. (Also slightly insecure about her position as the captain, and so her strictness is a way of compensating, but don’t mention that)

Irene Wolf (she/her): Science officer, or what she would call a “glorified data-puncher” on the sub. She’s not particularly happy about her posting, nor is she shy about expressing that.  Constantly treading the line of what Strider will tolerate, because Wolf is good at what she does - but infuriating all the same.

Erin Herschel (they/them): The cheery pilot/navigator of the submarine, who responds to almost any situation - good or bad or catastrophic - with a sort of resigned acceptance. An attitude that will be put to the test...

Kallias Azia (he/him): Salvage claw operator and junior scientist, who most certainly does not share Wolf’s worldview but hangs on her every word, willing to do almost anything to find her favor.

Ryu Mäkinen (zie/zir): The enigma (and field engineer) of the submarine, whom no-one, not even those working with zir, know anything about besides zir job. Just that good at sidestepping personal questions, although zie’ll politely deny it if you ask.

Osvaldo “Ozzie” Setebos (he/him): Doctor, chef, and longest-serving member of the Minerva, he knows all the stories of the ship, although who knows if he’s telling the truth?
