Do you feel like Colza could have been holding back in his administration of the Basics test compared to the first time he battled Roy? In the first battle, Substitute worked by getting Usokki away from the attack the moment it was about to hit, but the test had it essentially be a worse version of Double Team. Not to mention that there were quite a few occasions where he could have commanded Stone Edge either while Roy was spamming Flamethrower and missing or during the final clash where it would have dealt way more damage than a weaker Trailblaze. And where was Taunt during the battle?

There is a well known theory that I believe some episodes of the TV show and the games have backed that supports Gym Leaders adjust their tactics on the competency of the Trainer, as their job is to encourage the wards coming through their doors, not pave them over.
Colza was probably going somewhat easy on Roy. His job was to test Roy's competency if Roy understood his earlier lesson, not pull out every nightmare tactic from his play book.
Roy understood and absorbed the earlier lesson, and passed the non-practical part of the exam, so to speak, so I assume Colza was mostly feeling out Roy to see how much he absorbed of the lesson.

Some character and episode notes from HZ010, writing them down for future reference!
- I wonder why Friede wasn’t following Liko and Roy this time around since he usually does. Perhaps he was trusting Liko to show Roy around Bowl Town, since it would be a busy town anyway and that Liko is familiar with the area?
- I like the little details of Liko being knowledgeable about the Pokemon from Paldea and their evolutions (since she lives there) so she isn’t the one scanning them using the Pokedex, but Roy does. When they were at Roy’s island in HZ005 in Kanto, Liko was checking the Pokemon she met on the Pokedex since she’s never met them before.
- Liko and Roy met Nemo, who was battling someone. Liko heard of Nemo as a Champion rank trainer and initially calls her “Nemo-san”. Liko seems to keep up with trainer related things from her region since she heard of Nemo before then? Nemo also had business with Colza since the kids at town were waiting for his return as a Gym Leader. The kids in town really seem to look up to Colza. As an aside, Roy was really cute when he said that they made a new friend after him and Liko properly introduced themselves to Nemo.
- Colza was interesting! He is kind of cute. I noticed that he referred to Nemo as “kisama” at first which was kind of unexpected since it sounds rude. Also, his VA is the same as Naoshi from Diamond and Pearl, so it’s fun hearing him again in the series. Colza seems to know Liko’s father and was inspired by his work as well. I liked that Colza makes lots of Pokemon related mugs and other sculptures.
- Nyaoha trying to make Colza’s Pokemon relax was cute. I just like seeing Pokemon show off their personalities and just do their thing.
- Roy asks Colza about the black Rayquaza but Colza leaves. Roy is worried he said something that made him angry. Liko ends up guessing that Colza seems to be in a slump. I like that she brings it up since her father went through it before. It shows Liko pays attention to her surroundings. Liko, Roy and Nemo decide to gather the Kimawari in order to bring back Colza’s smile. Liko is helped by Nyaoha to find the best place for sunbathing since she thinks the Kimawari should be there.
- Seeing everyone’s efforts, Colza decides to tell them about what happened to him. He shows them a sculpture of the black Rayquaza that he made. I found it interesting that he mentions that he sculpted it before actually meeting Rayquaza. Just like Liko’s father, they both made works of art on a Pokemon they’ve never actually seen, so I wonder which references they looked at to know how Rayquaza looks like. Either way, Colza was in a slump after meeting Rayquaza. Liko notices that he seems to be suffering. Roy is impressed by Rayquaza even more and wants to meet it, mentioning that Rayquaza is his first step. He also compliments Colza’s sculpture, saying it’s as good as the real one. Colza seems moved by Roy’s passion and decides to test him in a battle. I like that Colza feels a sense of duty there.
- Colza and Roy end up having a 1 vs 1 battle. I liked that Roy makes mistakes, like assuming that Usokkie is a grass type. Roy seems to be overwhelmed a bit during the battle and makes hasty decisions. Colza tells him that during a battle, there is one thing he should always watch closely, which is his own Pokemon. During the training battle against Cap in HZ007, Friede told Liko and Roy to watch their opponent closely. Now, Colza’s advice is a bit different but I like how it completes the advice Roy received before. Liko notices during the battle that Colza seems to give Roy and Hogator a chance to grow. Colza was really trying to get them to learn something through the battle, and Hogator ended up learning a new move. Nemo also makes comments from time to time during the battle and seems very knowledgeable (identifying a move upon seeing it, explaining Terastal and the reason why Colza used it, which was to make Trailblaze hit harder, etc). Colza used Terastal and ended up winning the battle. Colza compliments Roy at the end, and encourages him to remember what he learned through the battle.
- At the end of the episode, Colza shows Roy and the others another sculpture he made, which was the Forest Oliva. He says that Oliva shone, as if resonating with Rayquaza though he ignores the reason why. After returning to the airship, Liko tells Roy that she sensed sadness from the sculpture. Liko seems sensitive to such feelings. I remember that she also felt like Rayquaza was angry when it came out of Roy’s Pokeball in HZ006.
- Overall, this was a fun episode! I am personally hoping that we don’t get the characters doing the gym challenge because the mysteries are more interesting and there is more stuff than battles. A gym challenge would feel a bit tedious for me so if the Gym Leaders have to appear, short battles like that for a specific purpose would be best, I think. I want the series to focus on its own characters rather than having the game characters appear so if they have to appear, hopefully they keep it at a minimum. Nemo seems to appear in the next episode too, so I wonder if she’ll be more of a recurring character.

One week til Mezase Pokémon Master begins... and the countdown to Satoshi's final ep also starts clocking down...
Oh man ;V; I'm kinda scared to have high hopes for the series but then again, it IS supposed to be Satoshi focused full-on, alongside his 'mon maybe, any returning characters would just be there to help Satoshi's development move forward, or so I would assume.
The updated site (TV Tokyo's Pocket Monster website, official btw) is quite interesting btw, as it IS listing Croagunk as Takeshi's partner (correct choice, I swear Croagunk is most remembered partner of his, alongside Usokkie ofc! And Iwark), also Psyduck for Kasumi, so I guess there'll be some not-so-OS nostalgia too. Still, Takeshi dear, why do you keep changing outfits, asfhjgsfsgf. Better show us that Comfey too :D
MPM01 should also be 1000th ep for Musashi and Nyarth if I've heard correctly, I could be off by one ep too. Idk. But Kojiro is for sure ahead thanks to that one Royal Mask ep in Sun & Moon.
But um. Yeh. Looking forward to watching the special tomorrow that will have people talking about their favourite memories of Satoshi's journey I think? and then possibly some preview in general for the series, and then ofc there should be ep 1 preview? Or should there... actually not sure :D
But yeh. Getting ready for the beginning of the end.

Watching a video of a Japanese person saying the OG Pokémon names and an American saying their counterparts and it’s kind of neat how some of the puns were maintained like Usokkie (a portmanteau that means fake tree) being sudowoodo (a portmanteau that means fake wood)
