#ut greater dog

When I was making this post I decided to give the fallen monsters that have family members that we personally meet in Undertale (Snowdrake’s mother, Shyren’s sister and the dogs parents) their “unique” designs.

But the ones that I got most attached were the designs for the dog parents.

(Why no Lesser Dog parent? Because he isn’t with the others when they reunite with Endogeny. Probably meaning that he doesn’t have any relatives that got turned into an Amalgamate.)

Anyway. When I created Woofie’s design I got struck with many ideas at the same time.

That lead me to create the other dogs designs and create this idea:

The dogs being the “Friendly Snowdin monsters that help the main character.” (Like Papyrus and Martlet.)

The main focus is between Woofie and Bark. While Muttler and Greatest Dog are more secondary monsters (like the Feisty Four) that’s why their designs are more simple.

Muttler serves more of a dialogue and character more than anything after befriending him. He appears around Snowdin Forest and he will give more background information about the others when talking to him (I kind of already have a dialogue idea that he talks about how he thinks that he should had named his son Junior because every year he looks like him more and more. To kind of make fun of how my design is so simple). He also interacts with the others dogs in cutscenes but he’s not supposed to be the main focus despite being the leader of the dog division.

Greatest Dog is kinda the same but rather than dialogue its interactions. Helping some puzzles and clearing the way with her strength and size. They would be more like scripted events than anything.

Woofie is where things start to get more interesting. Woofie mission is to protect Patience because she’s a child. She doesn’t actually fight Patience in any way in pacifist. Which would be explained why in a dialogue with her which she’s says that sometimes the king would ask some of the royal guard to take care of his children. Which means that Woofie took care of Chara in some occasions meaning that she knows how a human child would look like. Woofie helps Patience travel through Snowdin Forest and the second half of Waterfall before dropping Patience with the royal scientist because she knows that he would be also against the idea of a child dying to the king’s hands and that he’s the only one that would be able to talk some sense to the king. And later appearing with the other dogs before Patience goes to the throne room to say their goodbyes if the situation that the confrontation with Asgore doesn’t go well. Her final words to Patience would be “I hope to see you walk out the throne room alive… Little pup…”

Bark is the second main focus on this group. He spends most of Snowdin Forest trying to actually follow orders and take Patience soul. Which Woofie would object saying that Patience is only a child and Bark would object back saying that she’s a human and humans are dangerous and Patience should be kill because that’s orders. Woofie and Bark spend all Snowdin Forest going against each other’s because of what they think what’s right. Bark would actually get an opportunity to fight Patience before the entrance to Waterfall. After sparring him, Bark would gain your trust and he would wish you good luck in your travels before going back to town. He would appear later when Captain Gerson tries to start a fight with Patience. He gets in the way and tells Woofie who he came with to take Patience away while he keeps Gerson busy. He would later appear with the other dogs before the throne room to say his goodbye’s in the situation that things don’t go well. He does mention that he was able to convince Gerson to not go after Patience but admits that he and Woofie will be doing cleanup work for the next’s weeks for disobeying orders despite doing it to protect a kid.

In genocide things would be different. Woofie first meets Patience when she’s looking for the dangerous human killing monsters. She doesn’t believe that Patience is the one killing the monsters because she’s a child and believes that there must be a second human around. She tells Patience to not get in trouble before leaving to look for another human. But Woofie realizes at the end of Snowdin that Patience is the human that is killing all the monsters. She can’t believe that a child would be able to kill monsters but she can’t ignore the facts. She then fights Patience replacing Bark has the boss of Snowdin.

In genocide Bark would actually avoid attacking Patience during Snowdin, deciding to make Patience travels more difficult by causing road blocks to give the evacuation monsters more time to escape. After Snowdin he would only come back before the throne room to fight you. He would be the final boss before Asgore. He would use all the death royal guard weapons against Patience. Using his and Muttler’s axes to block Patience attacks by crossing the axes in front of him. The point of the fight is to keep attacking until the axes break to stop Bark from blocking before killing him.

Don’t ask me about neutral because there’s a lot of events to considerate.

Here’s some lore behind them that I came up:

In a conversation Woofie would mention that she never actually wanted to be a royal guard. She would explain that she only got the job to get enough money to help her son because he was born with very bad vision. She also explains despite her son already being a young adult she still helps him a lot saying that the underground is a nightmare for people with bad vision because of all the cliffs.

In a conversation Mutter would tell that Bark is a very protective father to his daughter and makes a comment to how Bark told her if someone broke her heart that she should break that person neck… And admits that he hopes that his son doesn’t break her heart because they dating. Patience then asks if Muttler and Bark are related and Muttler admits that they are very distant cousins, to the point that they are barely related.

I’ve compiled Grillby’s Rogues’ Gallery under the cut!

After multiple fallen attacks once humble town of Snowdin was turned into a military outpost with the forest around it used to stop the fallen in their tracks once they left the land of exiled.

Snowdin is a harsh place to live in, being constantly surrounded by members of the royal guard gives any misplaced word or action a price too big to pay. This place won't let you leave either, every citizen can theoretically replace a dead guard or serve the ones that are alive.

Once his brother joined the royal guard, Sans had to follow to prevent all the suffering Papyrus will inevitably face, even if to the outsiders he'll be just another rookie. Sans makes little to no progress in his "career", staying at his post as one of the forest overseers. The skeletons couldn't escape the harsh treatment of the guard members, Sans even lost a tooth in one of the meaningless fights he got into.

Any rookie who joins the guard will have to face judgment and suspiction from a crowd of those taught in blood and dust to attack outsiders. Papyrus was one of those rookies. Not having too good of an imposing facade, he had to create one for himself. First was a crack in his skull, caused by one of the trainings, then sharpened teeth after a tough day of humiliation. His determination and skill with traps allowed him to climb up the ladder quick, now he's one of the overseers of the Snowdin forest that he fills with traps and puzzles to prevent the fallen and civilian escapees traversing between the land of the exiled and the rest of the underground.

Long time members of the guard like the hounds seem to been "modified" In some way. Monsters that were in contact with them say that the dogs are "unnaturally soft" And "sticky". Most of them also behave in an unstable manner, some seem to be in a kind of constant trance, others attack everything that moves friend or foe, one of them even had to be restrained. The most sane ones seem to be the dogi, they take care of others, but often lose control.

The hounds often become victims of many traps in the forest, serving as additional obstacles in them.

The town itself is way less jolly and humble then it used to be. Hotels are now also used as barracks and bars serve the rations for the guards, sacrificing warmth and liveliness of the town for practicality.

Everyone who lives on the border between the land of exiled and the rest of the underground has to be under constant watch. Many who misspoke or acted somewhat suspicious were immediately exiled to the ruins, sometimes leaving their children behind (such as monster kid).

Many civilians join the guard under threats of separation from their families via exile. Even when there is no fallen in the underground, life of a guard is not easy, exhausting practice sessions, other fight-hungry members of the guard and civilians and constant scouting for the new fallen.

The only escape rout for those ready to take that risk is a mysterious ferry person that appears at night to transport you to many corners of the underground. Some say that they were once attacked by the high ranking guard members for their activity.

milkbone would probably initially hang out with the more anthropomorphic members of the dog group, ie dogamy, dogaressa, and doggo rather than greater + lesser dog. he has an odd feeling when around greater and lesser dog but doesn’t look too deep into it. doggo, dogamy, and dogaressa are more. sapient? i guess? milkbone’s more sly than classic sans, the sort of person your more socially adapted friend would point out and say ‘don’t talk to him he’ll scam you out of 20 dollars and your left shoe’.

but he can relate to the hound patrol (is that what they’re called?) to an extent, even if he might distance himself at times out of discomfort. while he gets their love for certain things, there’s a sort of animal thing about them he feels off around. they like petting, they smoke dog treats, they bark and yip and do all sorts of dog things that he doesn’t do, and he doesn’t want to associate with something so… animal. this isn’t a dig at them, even if he mistakes his discomfort towards those things as discomfort towards them. before his au’s plot “went down” he didn’t mind hanging out with them, and probably cracked a lot of jokes about being an ‘honorary dog’ or something. he just doesn’t like being compared to a dog, or any sort of animal, now. dehumanization is my most favorite trope so he gets all of it.

as for why milkbone wont attack asriels, he was asriel’s caretaker for a while. the au they’re both from, undertrap, is still a work in progress, but ive established a familial bond with them. the general idea of undertrap is that monsters were viewed as less than human, kept as novelties and all that, and to escape it they went underground, where they lived happily for hundreds of years. however, humans eventually found them when looking for chara, who had gone missing. chara was angry about this because their intent was never to hurt their new family, blah blah, but most monsters were taken back to the surface against their will.

two of those monsters were asriel and sans, aka milkbone, who were both looking for their families whom they got separated from, as they managed to escape the humans. this is why milkbone doesn’t like being dehumanized—outside the general discomfort that comes from it, he was quite literally treated as an animal as every other monster was.

over time sans became a familial figure to asriel, an older brother of sorts. still working out the kinks, but so far i think that at the end of it they’d find asgore and then humans try to kill them all, sans steals part of asgore’s soul to keep himself alive whilst he dusts, blah blah. and then! memory loss! bro doesn’t know who he is or what he is! he just has brief snippets of memories and discomforts, and while he’s done dirty work for his clients before, an asriel is the one monster (outside of papyri) he feels an extreme discomfort doing any harm towards.

he is canonically a multiversal character due to this split second decision throwing his fate off. by all means he was supposed to die there, but he didn’t. and his code, not knowing what to do, basically threw him out of the au until someone else approached him and he got introduced to the multiverse.

this is what im thinking anyway, he’s still hugely in development,, fun fact though! his collar wasn’t a choice he made to have, it was given to him, but he couldn’t take it off at the time and now, since he doesn’t remember the reason he has it, still wears it under the assumption ‘past’ him had picked it out himself.
