  It was uncanny, not realizing how very impulsive he could be until he’d met her — well... reconnected, really. Even as they stood there part of his brain was mulling over just how many days he could get away wearing the same pair of underwear, turning them inside out, backwards, washing them in the sink. Then again it wasn’t as if life under Garden employment didn’t pay well enough to afford a new set of clothes. 

  Still, as tempting as the thought was, and as much as he never wanted those dainty fingers to uncurl from his jacket, he had an obligation to a certain blonde-haired friend who’d taken a sudden and intense interest in all things Centran. 

  “A few days lounging in a hotel in my underwear not having to worry a lick about work sounds mighty nice,” he admitted with a smile that bordered on apologetic in spite of the genuine enthusiasm of his words. 

  “But without you beside me the entire time, who knows what sort of trouble I might get into,” he chuckled, reaching up to trace a strand of hair out of her face before swiping his finger down the bridge of her nose affectionately. “Best I stay here where someone more responsible can keep an eye on me,” he winked, leaning down at her behest to return the tender kiss that always seemed far too short when leaving her company. The way he curled her in tight against his body in a hug that practically enveloped her with his entire being confirmed as much.

  “I’ll be here waitin’, first face you’ll see when you get back,” he spoke the promise into the crown of her hair. It wasn’t until the train chimed a third time for last boarding call that he let go and gently turned her around toward the locomotive, giving her a gentle spank on the rear to send her off. 

  “Be safe. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.”

Even in this room of high tension and half-hearted mistakes, Echo isn’t afraid of the man sitting across from her in her hotel room. She studies his face, questions the way a scar or two rests on the skin that she can see, how truly stupid her father must have been to ask him for a favor that spiraled into a debt.

She used to think her father was invincible. A man with a page of debts to his name is rarely so.

“My daddy has a lot of markers that fell onto me. Your name was on the list, so I asked around. As far as we’re both concerned, neither of us can do shit in this room, so let’s cut the fuckin’ cool as a cucumber act and TALK.”

Taking the disc from the glass table between them, Echo opens to the bloodied thumbprint with a torn ache of nostalgia.

“You need a debt repaid so I can settle the score. What do you need me to do for you so we can never see each other again?”

She winced, knowing full well that if Squall was that livid already, it was probably even worse than the news was showing. “Can you blame him? Galbadia gets worldwide forgiveness for succumbing to the sorceress and making themselves into public enemy number one, then get handed a peace treaty, and instead of just signing it and backing off, they do this.” It was despicable, only reinforcing Selphie’s low opinion of them, and even though she, too, was upset, the emotion that had bubbled to the surface was fear.

If this was happening halfway across the world, who was to say their forces wouldn’t get cocky and go after others on their hit list - namely, the Gardens. If they wanted to cripple Balamb Garden’s forces, they knew some of the key SeeDs that were responsible for their defeat last time. If they wanted to take the Gardens by surprise and show they meant business...Trabia might be in trouble. It didn’t help that she was away from everyone else, but at the very least, Irvine’s worry mirrored her own for all of them, and she could only hope that they could all stay safe with this cloud of dangerous uncertainty hanging over their heads.

“I promise,” she said softly, turning to look out the window across the frozen tundra - a calm, peaceful scene that strikingly contrasts the madness that was unfolding in the background of the news broadcasts that had been playing almost nonstop for the past hour, and perhaps that was why it had stunned Trabia Garden into shocked silence once it had been turned on. “I was only going to go to town once before I came back, but now I might not even do that. Better safe than sorry, even if we’re protected here.”

Selphie paused, her certainty of their safety slowly waning as she sighed heavily, barely voicing the following, “...For now.”

also, side note: I've slowly started grown a liking to siding with #TeamJohn (still apart of #TeamSanti BUT) because John, although it wasn't right with what he did and how everything happened between him and Y/N (both are precious), I feel like he deserves more and Y/N could potentially make him happy if it ever goes that route

Oh, the fact that John deserves happiness is indisputable. He deserves so much. 🥺 And you’re right, his action—while wrong—were rooted in genuine care and love for V. In his eyes, it was lesser of two evils.

However, that being said, this is V’s story. I’ve kinda mentioned this a few times before but whoever she does or doesn’t choose isn’t really down to who deserves her more. Tbh both Santino and John have fucked up in different ways plenty of times so really it should be neither of them—and indeed it’s not going to be that straightforward. We still have a lot of plot left to get through, so any form of happiness for anyone is a long way off, if they’re getting it at all.

 He was thirsty. His glass was empty, and the kitchenette was only a short walk away from his bedroom — give him this at least, Rinoa, he was so very tired of feeling utterly useless.

 He leaned back on the kitchen counter, his crutch propped beside him, giving her a guilty but weary look. “I don’t,” he relented, knowing no reason would be good enough for his protectress; the guardian angel that had cared for him night and day since he’d been released from the hospital.

 He lifted his glass of water to her in cheers, taking a drink and setting it down beside him. “I didn’t want to wake you up, you’ve been tossing and turning for the past few hours and finally settled down. Thought you might have dozed off,” he said, a small apology in his tone for presumably waking her.

 “Wanna tell me what’s up?” he folded his arms over his chest, maintaining his lean and tilting his head.

He was thirsty, and Rinoa had been given strict orders to only let him out of bed to use the bathroom. He told her. He did. Seifer. Seifer said that he would be back in a couple of hours. 

And here they were, hour six and still no sign of him. Rinoa had a reason to be worried. Squall was supposed to be kept in the dark with the promise that Seifer would explain everything when he got back. But all of this-- even if Rinoa told Squall this truth, it would still only be a half-truth because-- 

“It... smells like him.” Rinoa leans against the counter, her eyes down at her feet. “His side of the bed, I can’t-- I can’t breathe without smelling him. And when I smell him, I can’t stop thinking about him... so when I do fall asleep I--” 

Dream of him. His smell. His hand at the nape of her neck. Remembering the fear. Remembering her. 

Rinoa looks at Squall and a hand immediately raises to grasp the rings joined with the silver chain around her neck. “I’m... just remembering... a lot of memories I wish I could forget.”
