Chapter 13

Leo pauses in the doorway of the mess hall and asks Frank, "Have you ever used an oven?"

Nothing prevents Frank from giving Leo those two middle fingers this time, which kind of just proves Leo's point because Frank's hands are free instead of doing something to help the process along.

"I was actually just curious," Leo says, though he does feel a slight smile pull at his mouth.

"First time for everything," Frank admits, and Leo's mostly sure he means his first time baking anything.

As Leo nods in agreement, Cal offers, "I have never used an oven either."

"I think you're selling yourself a little short," Leo says. "You know how to bake like, all the types of bread."

"Technically my ovens were open air, not like these of modern times," she gestures to the sleek oven door.

”Ah, no more roasting over an open fire,” Leo agrees.

"Ovens back in my day weren't anything like that either," Hazel says. "Were they any different for you, Nico?"

"Couldn't say," Nico tells her. 

“So Leo, how about you use your expertise and look at the recipe we're thinking about?" Hazel asks as he approaches the counter.

"This bit is gonna get stale," Leo sighs, crossing over to her.

I’d like to dive deeper into my thoughts on Caleo, bc they have been taking up most of my brainpower rn:

I get where Rick was going with it. I really do. They started off hating each other, Calypso thinking Leo was really annoying and just generally being like “why is this tiny human talking to me?”, but then they grew closer, realised they misunderstood each other, and bonded over common ground. It’s sweet. But the thing is, Rick? You’ve already got a character that did all that with Leo in the previous book!

And his name is Frank.

1. You’ve already set up that dynamic! Why not spend more time focusing on fleshing out that existing arc instead of creating a new one?

2. There’s SO MUCH more potential with angst- Frank being afraid of Leo bc of his fire, Leo being afraid of Frank because he’s twice his size and could easily crush his tiny body under his foot. Leo’s had to learn to survive on his brains and quick-wits in order to protect himself from bullies, and instantly gets defensive when he sees Frank. Frank is very insecure and sensitive, so immediately falls victim to Leo’s jokes. It takes a while for both of them to take those walls down, put aside their differences, and learn to trust each other.

3. It’s just hilarious how got-off-on-the-wrong-foot they were. A reminder that when Frank first met Leo, Leo had just destroyed half of New Rome. They both immediately judged each other completely based on looks- like it’s seriously funny how much you could compare these two to “Pride and Prejudice”. Also, the awkward misunderstanding that was the whole Sammy thing-

4. But they also have a lot more in common that Leo and Calypso ever did- similar trauma with losing their moms, and actually Leo is just as afraid of fire as Frank is. Both are incredibly insecure, and they both feel like they don’t belong among the other Seven.

5. You’ve also got that fun opposites-attract thing- Frank is big and muscular, Leo is built like a twig. Frank is big soft pookie bear, Leo is an absolute menace to society. Frank can turn into animals, Leo is a machines guy. Frank is Roman, Leo is Greek. You get the idea. They were written to juxtapose each other beautifully. They are the Yin to each other’s Yang.

6. They get so much more time together to establish a meaningful relationship. Their arc carries over three books, and we get to form connections as a reader to BOTH Leo AND Frank separately beforehand, so the payoff is a lot more satisfying. It takes time for them to open up to each other, and when they do it feels like they earned it. Calypso and Leo got a couple of chapters, that’s it.

It doesn’t have to be romantic! Leo can heal his trauma with friends and found family, learning to love and accept himself, learning that he doesn’t actually need the attention of a hot girl to be valid. He can find his place among his brethren with the help of all his friends, even Frank- the most unlikely of friends.

I wish Rick had put more effort into fleshing out the platonic relationships instead of just conforming to romance-centric ideals of “love fixes everything!” It’s lazy, and boring, and has been done to death. Platonic friendships make up 95% of our relationships, yet they are SERIOUSLY underrepresented in media. I’m calling for more interesting platonic dynamics. Leo and Frank could’ve been so much more, if Rick had actually taken the time to build on their relationship, and focused less on “Leo Needs a Girlfriend”!

So, when I say “Everything Caleo did, Valzhang could do better”- THAT is what I meant.

Also, Jason is so much better for Leo than Calypso, but that’s a whole other post.

sorry if I kept you waiting, me dear, as I am currently questionably sober and walking back home from an impulsive 3am ice skating session (Frank "Proudly Canadian" Zhang telling people about how he was going to school 3km In The Snow™ every day be like), but here is my 2022 naughty list:

1) I got rid of an abusive relative (not by murder, which is... disappointing)

2) moved in with a bunch of friends for a couple of months and finally got enough blackmail to end all of their lives, except for one, and now this lil shit seeks revenge for the rest of them (I see you)

3) made fwends, found valzhang buddies AND got a spouse (LiterallyHowAmISoLucky)?!

4) got back to writing fanfiction religiously

5) finished editing my first book and now am on my way to finish writing the first draft of the sequel

6) moved to a different country and now am living and breathing snow

7) had my first job ever (it was retail, which is ew, but it was money, so ;)))))

8) was called The Best Student® by the teacher in my Diplomacy class

9) died my hair!!

10) got my inspiration to make memes for every situation ever, back

so, yeah, I guess there were a lot of other things, but that's all I remembered for now!!

Rachel x Leo headcanons

- These two pull all-nighters in college like you wouldn’t believe - They never get more than 4 hours of sleep

- Leo calls Rachel Red - “Hey Red can you pass me those papers” - Rachel calls Leo turtle - Just because one time Leo was flirting with Rachel and this girl is blushing so hard - But then Mr. Dare walks in and sees his daughter blushing so he asks Leo what’s going on - Well duh Leo freaks and literally melts into his hoodie and pulls his arms in like cartoon turtles when they retreat into their shells - And Rachel shouted turtle at him and now he’s Leo Turtle Valdez to the entire Dare family - Mr. Dare didn’t like Leo at all when they met - He thought he was too scrawny and fidgety but then Leo made him some tamales or smth and he’s in love with him - Calls Leo “magic hands” coz he’s such a good cook which always makes Rachel blush but he doesn’t get why - Mrs. Dare practically adopted him and dotes on him so much - Leo wouldn’t be surprised if she bought him an entire cruise ship at some point - Not that he wants one - Nah - But that would be cool - Anyway back to all-nighters - These two.  THESE TWO.  I can’t with them.   - Leo at 2 am will just like take his glasses off, (mhm Leo with glasses *drool*) rub his eyes and go, “Fuck it I need coffee.” - And he gets up to make coffee in their little flat but Rachel had the same thought, just 10 minutes earlier - So when Leo gets to the kitchen there’s a wild exhausted redhead practically asleep over the coffee machine - Leo gently pulls her off and kisses her curls and whispers “thank you” and she beams up at him and says, “I figured you’d want to stay up a little longer so I made you some” - And then they get their projects and bring them into the living room, lay themselves out on the couch and start studying again with their coffee - Over time they just tangle their legs together and fall asleep like that - Piper gave Leo hell about Rachel - It wasn’t even funny - He would just look at Rachel and then Piper’s having a make-out session with herself - Imagine her surprise when they got together coz she thought Leo would never make a move - Speaking of moves Rachel’s got some - So does Leo - Dancing salsa and merengue at 1 am and laughing at absolutely nothing - Leo’s an animation major and Rachel is doing just art (idk what it’s called) - He’s always doodling on important papers and Rachel thinks it’s the cutest thing ever because whenever she nudges his hand away he won’t meet her eyes and he pouts and it’s just so adorable she just has to kiss his button nose - Leo wears black ripped skinny jeans because they make his ass look fine - But mainly because Rachel gets all blushy and flustered
