Small Spotlight: Bad Blood

Your vampire coven has been in conflict with the village for a long, long time. One way or another, this needs to end. Can you survive?

I've been invited to a tabletop game of classic (read: stupid retro pretentious) Vampire, the Dark Ages 1e version, and the rulebook is fascinatingly terribly designed as though the chapter writers didn't talk to each other after the outline.

In Chapter Two, on Vampire Society in the Dark Ages, it says that vampires sometimes practice Ordeal By Fire - the accused is required to run a gauntlet of vampires hitting him with lit torches.

Throughout the book, the fluff will frequently mention Rötschreck, the deep fear of fire and sunlight common to all vampires. These things may kill a vampire outright where mere blades will not, which gives one a vague sense that this ordeal is extra nasty for vamps.

In Chapter Seven, on Systems and Mechanics, we get the specifics on how Rötschreck works. When a vampire encounters an open flame, for example a lit torch, he has to roll a Difficulty 6 Courage check. On a success, he can bear the presence of the flame for a few turns (a turn is 3 seconds) before having to roll again. On a failure, he panics uncontrollably and runs away.

Vampires are incapable of organizing an Ordeal By Fire as written because they'd inevitably panic from holding torches. What on Earth were the devs thinking?

(Being burned is diff 8, for the poor sod being hit with torches.)

Worse: Given the above, you'd expect that seeing in the dark really, really should be a default vampire power. It isn't. It's an ability of the Protean Discipline of vampire superpowers that you buy with XP.

Even worse: Each of the 13 Vampire Clans starts with access to 3 of the 16 Disciplines. These are unevenly distributed. Only the Gangrel Clan teaches Protean. (Technically also clanless, but that comes with severe drawbacks.) The book is kinda vague on how much effort and favors it may take to get a Gangrel to teach you this if you're from a different Clan.

Even worser: If the Courage check is severely failed (a botch), the vampire gains a mental derangement, terrified by the fire.

Worcestershire: Due to the nature of rolls in this system, where 1s on the d10s subtract successes, a vampire with maxed-out Courage stat still botches 2% of the time. Courage rolls for Rötschreck happen frequently: torch in close proximity, Difficulty 6. Obscured sunlight or bonfire, Diff 7. Open sunlight or being burned, Diff 8.

I reiterate: this is a game set in the Dark Ages, pre-electricity, and where "see in darkness" is not a default power. One wonders how vampires are supposed to exist for more than a few years without becoming gibbering lunatics.

My guess is that it's the usual White Wolf bad habit of behaving as though characters borderline cease to exist offscreen, and rules don't apply during downtime. Vampires only panic if they encounter fire when the metaphorical camera is on them. Sunlight is only terrifying if you have the GM's attention. Rötschreck is a punishment for the hubris of being a player character.

Biography: Originally from Chicago Alex first moved down to Louisiana for college. The son of a media magnate, it was no surprise that Alex first wanted to get involved with communications, and when he finally settled on journalism, his family was extremely proud. What they weren’t however, was prepared for how entitled Alex was when he finished college. Upon returning home, he assumed his dad would be taking him under his wing and teaching him how to run the company, but his dad, Bryce, had different plans. He had expected Alex to get a job within the company and work his way up, making sure he knew every step of the business the way he himself had, but when Alex found that out, he was infuriated. 

It was only through his mother’s intervention that Alex wasn’t completely disinherited, and when he realized no other media companies in Chicago would give him a chance after hearing about his entitlement, he fled back to Louisiana, moving to Baton Rouge. He managed to get an entry level job at a paper, which didn’t pay much, but he still had his parents money, which his mom was still providing him. He worked at the newspaper, but he didn’t really make friends, he looked down on the people around him like he was better than them, and that rubbed people the wrong way. After nearly ten years of living and working in Baton Rouge his parents surprised him by coming down to visit. He showed them all the hard work he had been doing, and when his father offered to take them all out to dinner, Alex assumed this would be the point where his dad was going to offer to take him under Bryce’s wing, and let him take over the company, but as the evening went on and there was no mention of it, Alex got more and more mad. The anger came to a boil when Bryce commented on the sale of the company, and Alex was infuriated to find out that Bryce had sold the company for a huge profit. When Alex demanded to know what was going to happen to him, his father assured Alex that he wasn’t forgotten about. He had an account full of money put aside for Alex, for the future. 

Alex, infuriated at his father for ruining his life long plans, stormed off into the night, and Bryce and Carmen, Alex’s mom, were never heard from again. Alex was investigated closely, but when witnesses said they saw him walk away before his parents disappeared, the investigation ran cold. Alex went back to Chicago to declare his parents dead, but found that all of the money his father had promised him was in a trust that could only be accessed when Alex was an editor of a paper himself. The life insurance on his parents was paid out to other people, and the money that Alex had been getting monthly was no longer coming in. Destitute, he went back to Baton Rouge, and began to pressure his boss into letting him learn under him, letting him be an editor. The boss didn’t go for it, and after awhile got more and more uncomfortable with Alex pressuring him. Alex would harass staff members, trying to act like he was better than them, until he was eventually fired for his behavior. 

Infuriated, he was sure it was a coworker he had been bossing around who got him fired, and he followed them home before grabbing them as they got out of their car and telling them that they had made a terrible mistake. The next day the office got an email saying they were quitting and never coming back. Meanwhile, Alex moved down to New Orleans and began to work at a paper there. He kept his head down, stayed under the radar, but tried his hardest to come up with stories that would impress his bosses. When the great announcement happened, he tried hard to write stories about it, but so many stories were happening all over the world that they were lost in the shuffle. 

When he heard about a city of solely supernatural people, he knew he had to move there, he had to be a journalist, and maybe- just maybe he could impress the world and make editor of that paper, and finally get his inheritance.

Crimson Falls Background

The Beginning

Deep within the ancient forests of Oregon lies a city that dances between reality and illusion. It began its life back in the early 1800s as a small mining settlement, surrounded by rolling hills and dense forest. Rich in natural resources, it was the perfect location for the fledgling community to take root and make their home. Between the fertile soil and ore heavy mountains they had everything they needed to carve out an existence in those harsh first few years. It was hard work, but they were dedicated to the task and each other - none of them could ever have imagined that within thirty years their small home would become beacon for the hidden world

In 1834, Valentin Claret arrived in Crimson falls and found barely more than a hamlet. A few thrown together houses, a local tavern that looked like it barely saw more than thirty people enter at a time, and a couple of shops selling local produce made up the entirety of the settlement. There was nothing to suggest anything remarkable about the place. Yet, as Valentin walked its narrow dirt paths, his blood hummed in his veins. The ground seemed to call to him, resonating with the ancient magics that pulsed within the forests. It was intoxicating, and with that first taste of power Valentin knew that he was home; and in doing so he sealed the fate of that small hamlet.

It started with human greed. The community eagerly took everything that this seemingly charismatic philanthropist was willingly giving them. They bowed to every demand he gave, so long as they kept reaping the benefits of his generosity, what did they care if he began to take a little more of their land every passing year until the once small hamlet became a bustling town. Yes, it started with human greed - but it ended with supernatural hunger. Once he had enough of the land under his control Valentin began to feed that power he felt laying under his feet. First to go were the sick, no one noticed one or two who met their end a little earlier than expected, no, they grieved but easily moved on. Next the infant mortality rate began to creep up, mothers losing babies in cribs, fathers finding their children sleeping in forests only to never be able to wake them. No one suspected the charming Valentin Claret. No one saw the blood on his lips when he offered his condolences.

With every sacrifice offered to the land Valentin grew closer to the edge of the abyss. With beguiling lies it filled him with false promises of power like he had never known. More power than the vampiric blood in his veins could offer. More power than the witches in the woods could ever control. The shadows promised him more than immortality and parlor tricks. If only it hadn’t taken her. Valentin had been ready to dive into the depths of hell when the darkness called him, right up until he held his beloved in his arms - her neck snapped by his own hands.

Shaken to his core, Valentin looked about the city of debauchery that he had created in his unyielding thirst for more, and he felt the first stirrings of regret. He had corrupted this land with blood - and only blood could fix what he had done. Holding his beloved still in his arms he followed her into death. It is his blood and sacrifice that still protects the city of Crimson Falls. Known as the Crimson Shroud, it hides the creeping monsters and cackling witches, traps them within the illusion of normality.
