My Takeaway

I just wanna give him a hug. On one hand, he's being modest and that's sweet, but I think this is also testament to Vax's low self-esteem. He doesn't think highly of himself and his own abilities. This is Vax downplaying his own abilities although he's done something no one else in the party could do. He thinks the party doesn't need him even though that's evidently not true.

It's definitely a recurring theme for Vax:

Vax is always going on about how much smarter Vex is than him, even though he literally has higher INT stats than her. In fact, Vax had the joint highest Investigation modifier and, for most of the campaign, the joint highest Intelligence score of Vox Machina.
