McKinsey is behind the majority of illegal mergers, the majority of pharma patent fraud, and the majority of illegal exclusive dealing cases. They keep asthma inhaler prices high, write strategy for ALL THREE Pharmacy Benefit Managers, and all five big defense contractors.
And now let’s move to McKinsey’s power over big business. It’s hard to find a big company that McKinsey doesn’t work for. McKinsey keeps its client list secret, but I got documents from bankruptcy filings showing who some of them are. And as it turns out, 68% of companies being sued by Federal enforcers over antitrust violations in the merger, Orange Book fraud, monopolization, or exclusive dealing are McKinsey clients. McKinsey works for the companies keeping the price of inhalers high to consumers (and the government), it works for the big three PBMs, all major big tech giants, and all five major prime defense contractors. It is the key vector for spreading bad business habits across sectors, through private equity firms and Wall Street, and into your neighborhood.

Team chaotix headcanons bc I adore them and I’m fandom trash.
Charmy bee
6 - 9 yo. Realizes he’s pansexual when he’s older, he/him. Audhd.
(If human) I imagine him as Afro-Latin. Do I have evidence? No. But I feel it.
Has trouble reading (possibly dyslexic), but refuses to acknowledge or tell anyone and it bites him in the ass. “Hey man, what does that say?” “Uh…chicken kebab.” “Chicken keba- -that says ‘restroom’.” “Does it??” “Where’d you get ‘chicken kebab’ from???” “I dunno????”
Has no idea who his family or parents are or were. He doesn’t care. Vector and Espio are his family, and that’s that.
Used to call vector “dad” when he first started talking. Vector pretended not to like it. After he was officially hired as a member of the detective agency, he stopped calling vector “dad” and just called him by his name to sound “more professional” as Charmy called it. He started calling vector “dad” again when he turned 12 or so.
There was one time the Chaotix went on a dangerous mission and charmy almost got badly hurt. They thought it’d be a good idea to put him in daycare for a bit during the day so he’s somewhat safe and he gets to learn things.
It took 3 people to drag charmy inside the daycare. He did NAWT wanna go.
Normally is very polite and kind but will absolutely throw hands if you insult his friends/family or are mean in general. He’s got a 0 tolerance policy for bullies.
When he gets into a serious fight, he takes off his helmet. He headbutts.
Enjoys boxing and watching the boxing channel. He tried to train with some friends but it got out of hand and needless to say to say he sent 3 kids to the hospital. But at least he was victorious.
Knuckles is his boxing coach when they have time together.
Doesn’t have a lot of actual friends his age. He claims his best friends are Espio and vector. Which concerns them both because they want charmy to have friends his age.
Occasionally vector gives him days off and lets charmy roam the neighborhood to hang out with neighbor’s kids. Charmy isn’t really close friends with any of them, but at least it’s something.
But charmy ends up hanging out with cream and tails the most.
The minute charmy and cream met they saw each other as siblings. Like they both believe they came out of the same woman. When they get time to themselves they like to cause slight mischief around town.
Vector teaches him a lot about money, so charmy hosted a whole ass class to the neighborhood kids about how to commit tax fraud. You can imagine some parents were not pleased.
In real life, bees are known for being excellent dancers. You know damn well my boy charmy is tearing it up on the dance floor. You name a dance and he can dance as if he invented it. The moonwalk, the Prisiadki, the Charleston, any. Vector and Espio are insanely impressed.
If he didn’t love detective work so much, he’d be a food critic. He’s got a good flavor palette.
He likes to help tails test-drive with some new robotics if Sonic is unavailable at the moment.
He and kit have unspoken beef.
Speaks a little Spanish. He, Espio, and Ray like to shit-talk their coworkers speaking Spanish and none are the wiser.
Teaches cream swear words in Spanish.
When he got older and became a dad he called vector every 5 minutes to ask baby questions and to see if he was doing everything right. Vector had to come over several times for it to only be a minor fix. But he assures charmy that he’s doing a great job.
Espio
17 - 21 yo. Bisexual, he/they. Autistic.
(If human) Japanese.
Mommy issues. She genuinely does care for him, but is so insanely strict and uptight and it’s suffocating and one of the only people that gets Espio really riled up.
Close with his father, but he died under mysterious circumstances when Espio was around 12 or so. Espio still wonders what happened.
Has a couple younger sisters, but was never very close to them, as he was busy with ninja training.
I have some more backstory for him but it involves oc x canon and ik no one gives a shit lol /hj
left home at 15 and stayed at Angel island for a while.
I said it before in a personal hc and I’ll say it again. He unintentionally pulls bitches. Male, female, doesn’t matter. A client comes in, the job gets done, the client gives Espio their phone number personally. He doesn’t know why.
Espio has a whole drawer full of these numbers he keeps because he thinks they could be used to call previous clients for future cases. Vector seethes with jealousy and frustration.
Too young to be considered a co-parent, but too old to be considered vector’s son. So vector just refers to him as “family”, he doesn’t need a label.
His favorite food is dumplings, but this specific recipe his mom made. They aren’t on speaking terms, so he can’t get the recipe. Every time he tries to re-create it, it comes out wrong.
He can cook excellent Japanese cuisine, but because the ingredients are so expensive he can’t make any for vector and charmy.
Canonically speaks 17 languages, so if he’s pissed at his coworkers he speaks only a certain language they can’t speak. It drives them up the wall.
Has the potential to sing really really good, if he used his talent he’d be more popular than Elvis.
Learned shamisen from his father. He has a few sheets of music his father would play when he was younger, and tries to recreate the music.
Hopes to open his own tea house one day.
Looooves tea. Likes to drink it after a long day. Or sake. Depends on what kind of day he’s had.
Vector
21 - 35 yo. Straight, he/him. Adhd.
(If human) African-American, but he’d be from Louisiana specifically.
Momma’s boy. Learned from her to be kind to others without reward. He was closest with her.
Youngest of 30. The most picked on and got everything last. Thankfully, his momma made sure he gets food at every meal.
His pop was very hard on him, trying to toughen him up, but also never took vector seriously.
He ran away from home when he was 13 and lived in Downunda till he was 18 and met the other chaotix.
Writes to his mother every day.
Used to smoke until he adopted charmy. He’s done a good job at quitting!
Used to partake in Mary-Jane and lots of drinking. Stopped 1, bc of charmy and 2, bc he couldn’t afford it anymore. He saw it as his wake-up call in order to quit. …but every now and then if offered…
Babysat cream once in hopes of gaining vanilla’s favor. He spent the evening teaching cream tax fraud. Vanilla was not impressed.
Scruffs anyone shorter than him when arguing. Oh, talking shit? Get scruffed, idiot.
Cream is basically his daughter now, he’s such a girl dad. But doesn’t forget to give charmy equal amounts of love and attention.
Would die and kill for his kids. Don’t think he won’t.
Loves to DJ, and occasionally DJ’s for big events of the price is right.
Looooves jerky. If you give him some he’d kill for you. But if you give him one of those gross fake-jerky’s he’d kill YOU.
Used to have an awful swearing problem, and tries to keep it on the down-low after he had charmy. It was hard to stop swearing, but he did a good job. But of course the one time he swore, charmy’s first word became “shit.”
Chaotix
They once took a job at club rouge in hopes of getting some extra cash, but they were all fired after the first day. Vector was too aggressive with mean customers, charmy kept messing up orders and spilling food, and espio kept running off to use the slot machines.
They genuinely have no idea what happened to mighty and ray.
There’s a group of mean kids in their neighborhood that like to pick on charmy. Normally, charmy doesn’t say anything about it and takes care of it himself by trying to fight against them. He always loses and comes home with some bruises or cuts.
But there was one time he got roughed up a bit too much and broke his arm. Obviously Espio and Vector took him to the emergency room, but afterwards they decided to try and take care of the punks themselves. Then the parents.
After that they got arrested for aggravated assault. Vanilla had to bail them out.
They loooooooove the beach. They try to go as much as they can during the summer and spring.
During the winter, because Espio and vector are cold blooded, they get rather sluggish and more tired. As an addition to that problem already, their building doesn’t have good air conditioning, leaving them very cold and unable to do a lot around the agency.
it’s up to charmy to try and pick up the slack, and solve cases while he makes vector and Espio rest.
Turns out he can’t do every single job in the agency by himself, so he desperately asks cream and tails for help with cases. While vanilla helps trying to keep espio and vector from freezing to death.
When the temperature gets warmer and Espio and vector can move again, they give charmy a few days off so he can relax for all his hard work.
They have the dumbest conversations if there’s nothing to do. They once got into a fight about what color an orange is. Don’t ask.
They have a rinky-dink box tv they all have to share. If someone wants to watch a different channel they rock-paper-scissors for it. Vector always loses.
When charmy’s asleep, vector and Espio drink Sake together and discuss further finance decisions and business problems. But it ends up turning into stupid conversations either about childhood trauma or something funny they saw on the street.
Vector’s room consists of a twin bed way too small for him that only has one pillow and a blanket, a broken down record player, several draws of tacky jewelry, posters from bands and musicians that were popular in the 90s, a boombox, a closet of old clothes that don’t fit him anymore, and several dirty clothes on the floor.
Espio’s room consists of a futon he tried to diy but it’s lumpy and uncomfortable, a bunch of mix-n-match furniture he bought in attempts of trying to make it a somewhat not-sad living situation, several ninja stars and Shuriken’s stuck on the walls and ceiling from practicing and night terrors, said ninja stars and shurikens are also hid under his pillow and his futon, a few katanas are hung on his wall, and a closet of traditional kimonos, ninja outfits, and disguises.
Charmy’s room consists of a twin bed that’s a bit nicer than vectors but still messy, a baby blanket his parents gave him (the only thing he has from them), knock-off toys vector bought at the discount store, miscellaneous objects (such as wrenches, staplers, sticks, etc) that Charmy claims as toys, drawings he’s made, photos of the Chaotix’ on various adventures, several board games for “family game night” they’re all just different editions of the game Clue, and a closet with toys he claimed he put away, a couple winter coats, and several swimwear because he forgets where he puts them and ends up buying a new pair.
Bonus fella’s:
Mighty
16 - 22 yo. Omnisexual (masc pref), He/him. Audhd.
(If human) genuinely don’t have any idea, but he’d be from Texas no matter the ethnicity.
Grew up on a desert farm with his Pop and a few little siblings. Country boy. Left to peruse a life of adventure, but still keeps in touch with his dad.
Has an accent he tries to hide because the others tease tf out of him for it. “Hey have y’all seen-“ “y’all??” “Y’ALL???” “Stop.” “Y’ALL C’MERE N HELP ME WITH THE CHICK’N KOOP!!” “Stop it.” “BERNIE COME GIT THE DAYUM CATTLE ‘FORE IT EATS ALL OUR CROPS!!!”
Gym enthusiast. Loves to work out every day he can. And likes to help out people in the gym who struggle.
Used to have teeeeerrible anger problems, but he’s gotten so much better. He learned to calm down when he began taking care of Ray. Ray taught him patience, quiet, and self control.
Sweetie pie. Is the best to come to for comfort, he’s so polite.
Gives. The. Best. Hugs. Why do you think he works out so much?
Amazing with kids, likes to read them books if he ever babysits. And used to read storybooks to Ray.
After several years of practically raising Ray, he knew he wanted to be a dad. Problem is, he doesn’t have a partner he wants to raise kids with…
Ray likes to make homemade gifts, mighty keeps every single one no matter how misshapen it is or how shitty it’s made.
Ray
6 - 12 yo. Genderfluid when older, he/she/they. Autism.
(If human) Mexican.
Was about 3 - 4 years old when he met mighty, and has stuck by him ever since.
Ray used to call him “dad” but began calling him “brother” when he was 5. Mighty misses when he used to call him dad.
Can kick your ass in go-fish.
Not as smart as tails, but not as dumb as charmy.
Loves kickball. Is the best out of the entire group.
He, charmy, tails, and cream have flying races to see while fastest. He and tails tied.
Really good chef. Give him miscellaneous items in your pantry and he’ll give you a 5-star meal. Charmy is the taste tester.
He’s a real sweetie, but has a mischievous and sassy side that only comes out when he’s with kids his age.
His blue shoes were the first gift mighty ever gave him.
Spanish is his first language. Mighty taught him English, and he teaches mighty Spanish.
Becomes a professional chef when he’s older.

I just wanted to say I have so much respect for the incredible essays and fic you write for IBO, and I’m so grateful you’re in this fandom.
I was wondering, have you talked previously about McGillis’ line of “Is there such thing as true happiness and fake happiness?” especially when considered alongside his line of wanting to make Almiria happy? If not, what do you make of that?
It’s been floating around in my head ever since I watched the show, but I haven’t been able to figure out exactly what to make of it and haven’t had the time to rewatch the show yet.
Thank you! My brain has been set to overdrive on the subject of Iron-Blooded Orphans for more than three years now (please send help) so I'm not sure I could have stopped if I tried.
Anyway. Oh boy. That line. No, I haven't written commentary on it previously, at least not directly. But it underpins literally everything I've done in terms of fanfic spiralling out of McGillis' actions, so I have thought about it quite a lot.
For me -- apart from being the moment Gaelio realises precisely how far he's fucked everything up -- that question is the distillation of McGillis as a character. And as much as he says it about his treatment of Almira, it also serves as an excellent vector for examining McGillis and Gaelio's changing relationship throughout the entire show, specifically with regard to why Gaelio is Always Wrong (TM) about his best-friend-turned-mortal-enemy.
The context here is important, since this final scene is the one point in the entire show where we can uncomplicatedly say McGillis is being completely open. He's lost. He's dying. Everything he hoped to achieve has fallen to pieces. Visually, he's been stripped back to his child self, hair fallen wild and expression dulled. This is McGillis undone. It no longer matters what he does or how he presents, so he's finally able to be honest with Gaelio. All the masks are off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gaelio, of course, is in full avenger mode, demanding McGillis stay alive long enough to look directly at the consequences of his actions and face his crimes. And McGillis finally admits that all the jumping up and down and masked-ghost shenanigans was unnecessary: he'd *always* seen Gaelio and always held affection for him. He wasn't some cold traitor, saying all the right things to get close enough to stab everyone in the back. Gaelio and Carta were his friends, and though that was anathema to his desire for power, it wasn't a fraud. He even promised to make Gaelio's sister happy for the sake of their friendship.
The English dub script adds the phrase 'no matter the cost' to the end of this statement and I think that's a very acute sentiment, given McGillis nearly dies sooner due to the wound he suffered stopping Almiria from killing herself. His own actions prove he means what he says: even at the cost of harm to himself, he was determined to honour his word on at least this point.
Predictably, Gaelio responds by reiterating the accusation of McGillis spreading delusions. Any happiness McGillis gave to Almiria could only be fake (due to the scheming, backstabbing, brother-murdering and so on). Which leads McGillis to asking, does it matter?
Are there such things as true and fake happiness?
I mentioned masks. For Gaelio, that's a literal object, a disguise to conceal his survival (from anybody who doesn't have the official height chart to hand, at least), that is literally discarded at this point. But for McGillis, the masks always run deeper. Indeed, if there's one thing we can say about his Montag persona and the attendant jester's visage, it's that it allows him to act more like he really wants to, to the point he starts getting a little giddy.
Tumblr media
No, for him, masking is performance. Acting. The construction of a surface persona to meet the demands of the situation he's in. Gaelio draws attention to this when describing how McGillis changed as they grew into teenagers, opting to actively fit in with the social scene around them and only seeming to share his 'true' feelings when the two were alone. As the audience, though, we can trace his chameleonic nature back further. In the montage of McGillis' past, we see him adapting to the various situations he is forced into, first by teaching himself to commit violence to establish dominance, then by cultivating studiousness. It seems unlikely McGillis being chosen as Iznario's heir was disconnected from how hard he worked on building himself up in order to survive. Learning how to navigate social and political environments is a natural progression of these efforts.
That this *is* conscious construction is key. Because McGillis also sets out to transform himself into the ideal Agnika Kaieru represents. Ultimately this culminates in physically altering his body so he can use Gundam Bael, but it's far more than that. He trains himself in the two-sword fighting style Agnika used, long before he's anywhere near achieving his goal. He immerses himself in Gjallarhorn's hierarchy and assists skilled, lower-class officers like Isurugi. He dispenses with his childhood sombreness in favour of an authoritative, rigorous, charismatic professional persona. All of this serves his goal of achieving absolute power, yes. It's also about shaping himself into what he thinks he should be -- the embodiment of the characteristics he attributes to Agnika.
There are a few positive aspects to this. Gaelio, operating on the assumption McGillis is a cynical back-stabber, thinks he goes to Mars to survey the mobile armour situation for personal gain. But in truth McGillis goes to ensure Hashmal doesn't awaken. It's the kind of move someone in Gjallarhorn *should* make, so he does. That he is later inspired to go after the Order of the Seven Stars as Gaelio originally imagined he intended is a reaction to things spiralling out of control and exciting him with the world's most ill-advised historical re-enactment; it's not where he comes into the situation. Likewise, he seems to have been a fairly good inspector, exposing corrupt officers like Coral and later doing due diligence on pulling the Outer Earth Orbit Regulatory Joint Fleet (oh cripes I can write than from memory) into proper fighting shape.
At the same time, it means McGillis is always dishonest with other people. He's always got an angle, is always holding something back, always tries to fit everyone into his plans, somehow. Even when he is truthful (such as saying he's admired Carta for treating him as an equal when they were kids or sharing his faith in Agnika's principles with Almiria), there are other factors to consider. His scheme to gain power inside Gjallarhorn, his need to keep things running smoothly, his obsession with being the individual who can transform the world -- these are in play right up until he is bleeding out on the floor.
It's natural, given this, to ask 'who is the true McGillis?' What really exists underneath the layers of performance? However, I think doing so is to repeat a lot of Gaelio's mistakes because, as we eventually find out, McGillis himself fails to draw a meaningful boundary between 'real' and 'fake'.
He promised Gaelio he'd take care of Almiria while in the act of killing him. It was politically prudent to maintain the engagement and he also considered Gaelio a true friend, so there's good reason to honour the promise. On top of that, Almiria is someone he appears to care greatly for, perhaps out of fellow-feeling since she is as much a pawn in others' games as he once was. Thus, her happiness becomes one of his chief goals. To this end, he accommodates her wishes to be seen as a grown-up lady (as imagined by a nine-year-old) and explains how what he is doing will benefit them both. He goes so far as to stop her from harming herself once his deception is exposed, promising that one day, she will be truly happy despite everything.
And the next time he refers to Almiria in any way -- the last time, prior to his final confrontation with Gaelio -- it is to internally chide her for being so troublesome as to leave him with a wound that negatively affects his battlefield performance. Placed alongside his earlier lines to her and the act of putting his hand in the way of the dagger she aimed at her throat, it's an *incredibly* dismissive reaction. It would be easy to read this as him having only pretended to care about Almiria all along, concealing a real disdain. Except, again -- he put his hand in the way of that dagger, without hesitation.
What's going on here?
Well, McGillis presents in whichever way he needs to in order to navigate his circumstances, saying whatever he thinks is most likely to get the outcome he wants. That's his base state for interacting with the world, as a consequence of growing up the way he did. Seeing no distinction in the veracity of happiness speaks to a very outcome-focused view on human interaction. What difference does it make if a positive reaction is prompted by sincerity or by moulding oneself into a form best suiting the other person? They're still happy. Or giving the appearance of it. That's enough, right?
We eventually see this approach fail with Tekkadan, owing to McGillis' misunderstandings about them. Towards the end of the show, stripped of material superiority, his appeals to their fighting spirit fall flat. He tries to sway them on the level he thinks they operate (pride, desire for power, strength of will) rather than the shared loyalty and familial bonds that actually drive them forward. He simply doesn't realise the things they have pursued were always a means to an end -- each other's safety -- rather than the end itself.
That failure highlights both how important it is to engage with the reality of what you're trying to manipulate (the critical distinction separating him from Rustal) and how genuine McGillis is about his stated goals. He really does want to become the all-powerful leader of Gjallarhorn and believes that will allow him to make the world better. He'd do anything to achieve it. Just like he really means to ensure Almiria's happiness, however much he needs to cover up and present differently -- or even suffer physical harm -- to do so.
That right there is the fundamental problem with how Gaelio sees him throughout Season 2. He doesn't get that McGillis' performances are not strictly falsehoods but tools used to obtain the outcome he's proclaiming to anyone who'll listen. The act may be pieced together from truth or lies or force of strength; what matters is that it *works*.
I spent my essay about Agnika focusing on McGillis' ideology. What the true/false happiness line exemplifies is his methodology or, more strictly, the survival strategy he adapted into a generalised approach. It's the Tekkadan strategy error -- applying the same methods over and over in situations where they are increasingly counter-productive -- writ on a subtler scale. A compulsive need to treat every interpersonal encounter as having a specific outcome, where the actual content, the human connection, and the emotional impact lose any significance beyond 'if X then Y'.
The kicker being that, when McGillis does have to deal with genuine emotions on their own terms, he shoves them as far away from himself as he can. Carta and Gaelio should have been his closest allies and loyalist supporters, not to mention a positive impact on his wellbeing due to, you know, actually caring about him as a person. Instead, he kills/tries to kill them, not just because their deaths serve his ambitions but because they gave him something other than his ambitions -- full stop. Something else. And he couldn't have both.
McGillis could not build himself into the perfect embodiment of individualism while keeping his friends close. He couldn't continue to persist on an outcome-focused approach with unprompted, un-targeted happiness just happening to him. From everything else about his character, I'm not sure he could ever have trusted the feelings Carta and Gaelio induced in him. Far better to construct the happiness he thought he wanted. Far safer. Far more natural, for someone under no illusions about the world's hypocrisies, or what people do in order to survive.
The tragedy is that this is an inescapable problem. McGillis was always going to chose the constructed ideal future over the reality that lay within touching distance. The damage, for that's what this is, was done long before anyone who cared was in a position to intervene. This is somebody who'd execute the people he cares for and who cannot understand his best friend crying over his dying admission of affection, any more than he can grasp why being willing to do anything to ensure a little girl's happiness isn't necessarily laudable. Where would you even begin trying to unpick that?
Which of course is exactly what makes him so effective within this story. There's a paradox at the heart of McGillis, which is part of why I've never tried to write his perspective in my fic, where he manages to be profoundly honest and chronically self-deluding, the signifiers of a manipulative bastard twisted around into . . . I don't really want to call it pathology because I think that undersells the active choice to be who he is. But we see how he got there, the trauma that went into making him, how different aspects of it meshed together, shaping him one after the other. It's not just the homelessness, or the sexual assault, or being trafficked, or being made a pawn in a political game, or fixating on a historical figure. It's all of them put together, and I think it's a fantastic bit of character work.
There simply isn't a solution. Just an inescapable arc towards disaster, and the devastation of a pair of siblings who each loved him more dearly than he could possibly conceptualise.
-----
That's more or less where I land on things, anyway. Hopefully this was mostly coherent, as rambles go? Like with everything to do with McGillis, I can never just pull one thread. The man's a living rats-nest, which I love about him but does make it difficult to be succinct!
Thank you very much for the ask, and for your kind words. I will admit to feeling a degree of 'if there's no active fandom for this show, I'll damn well do it myself' when I started writing the fic and the essays, so it delights me no end to know there are people getting a kick out of them. :)

I just wanna know if it'll work!
The Monolith!
A massive perpendicular structure - 1 meter deep, 4 meters wide, 9 meters tall - with a perfect 81 centimeter diameter circle cut, with its center 64 centimeters from the top.
Naomi Glasnikova was grinning like mad. She couldn't figure out where to put squares of 4, 5, 6, or 7 in the design without overcomplicating things, so decided to just forego them. It'll be fine, she's sure everything will work out just as planned.
What is the plan, her fellow scientists from the Coalition species ask? To see if placing ominous black metal alloy structures around a planet with primitive lifeforms will make their brains go "Oh, this is different, I should... *think* about it. Yes. Thinking is a thing I can do now. Thus, with the power of thoughts I can look at other things and go "Oh, what if I did this!" and make myself evolve into a civilization (once I figure out how to come up with prerequisite concepts)."
Is the inner dialogue Naomi was having. Her colleagues, both Human and Alien alike, had long abandoned the idea of trying to talk to her about her projects. She would just get into this deep staredown with you while simultaneously not paying any attention to your existence. Her mind begins to race with the possibilities, the what ifs, who dunnits, why nots, etc., and after a few minutes of complete stillness she would suddenly rush out, writing furiously on her digi-pad, often bumping into chairs, tables, walls, other people, one time she almost vented herself from the station. They put a micro-tag on her pad that would wirelessly turn off nearby lights at any intersections that didn't lead to her office. She subconsciously veers toward bright lights.
This latest monolith project came about after one of her equally eccentric interns (nobody knows where they come from, she just seems to naturally attract ones with similar brainwaves or something) showed her an ancient fictional documentary about possible technological developments in the early 21st century. The image of this simpler monolith instantly embedded itself into her mind.
WAIT! I've got it! Four groups of monoliths arranged in different patterns. The group of 16 will make a perfect square. 25 a star. 36 a hexagon, and 49 a... hmm heptagon would be too similar, and it doesn't look right no matter how you shape it.... hrrnnn No wait, a seven layer circle! One in the center, fourteen in the outermost and the rest... I'll do the math later. The areas will need to be perfectly cleared and flat too. Oh! Line patterns on the ground itself. Ones that show core scientific truths! One of the primitives will surely one day follow the lines and map them out either in its brain or on a simple data recording apparatus and see Science! They'll be so stunned! Gotta write that down, get one of the helpful people (her interns, whose names or faces she doesn't even know, yet they don't care either. Look, it's weird, but their kind of non-relationship works out somehow) to begin production. They will need to be made of non-corrosive alloys, of course. Each with a different core metal though. But then the color might change. No paint, that is an unnecessary element. Hmm... Evolution will take millennia, hopefully a few less with my help.
Last month her focus was on making a fully transparent species of frogs to see whether they would go extinct due to being unable to see their partners, or overrun the ecosystem. Nobody has seen the results of that yet.
We also don't know what she's actually a PhD of. Her diploma just says applied robotics, and it is a legit diploma from the Henderson University of Greater Estonia. But her published thesis is on viral infection vectors in sub-tropical moths. We thought she might be a fraud, but the science checks out in whatever she has put out so far. Whatever she is, she is allowed to do whatever she wants. Like most scientists out on these stations now that I think about it.
What are we even doing here, other than... Science?
Mmmm, fuck it, unlimited funding. Let's go!

Astral is Yuma's cool autistic internet friend and fairly recent transfer student, he's studious and quiet and Yuma is SOO SO EXCITED TO SHOW HIM AROUNDDDD EVERYONE CHEER AND CLAP FOR MY BESTIE RIGHT NOWWWW. i cant decide on a major for him rn but whatever it is he is an excellent student... eventually Yuma and Astral become roommates but currently Astral's staying with his host family (uh. Arven and his parents. from pokemon. dont worry about it ❤) and learning a lot. about insane American families.
Dark Mist meanwhile is, Kind of Just Some Guy. But Watch Out
Tumblr media
isnt really related to Astral in any capacity in this AU, except for an instance of 96 committing identity fraud with Astral's credit card number and that's a fun new experience for poor Astral :,) He's just a slimy skeevy guy Vector gets into some business partnership schemes with (and kind of cant stand.) Has 35 fake IDs and 125 fake names and eventually one of his schemes goes south and he dies when his house explodes (long story) (dont worry about it 🥴)--now Vector's still in the middle of trying to unload all of Mist's illegal bullshit and it's a REAL PAIN IN THE ASS. He ditched Mist's car in the reservoir just outside of town and if you saw him do that no you didnt <3

Matt Gertz at MMFA:
Special counsel Jack Smith alleged in a recently unsealed filing that as part of their 2020 election subversion conspiracy, Donald Trump and his allies entirely fabricated their claims about noncitizens voting. Similar lies are at the heart of right-wing media’s current efforts to undermine the 2024 vote in the lead-up to November’s presidential election.
Fox News, Fox Business, and Newsmax together aired at least 141 claims fearmongering about noncitizens voting in the 2024 elections over the last month, according to a Media Matters review. Smith writes that at Trump’s federal criminal trial for his attempt to subvert the election, the government will demonstrate that Trump and his alleged co-conspirators “repeatedly changed the numbers in their baseless fraud allegations” and thus their “lies were proved by the fact that they made up figures from whole cloth.”
[...]
Noncitizen voting is illegal in federal elections and vanishingly rare, and there is no evidence of large numbers of undocumented immigrants registering to cast ballots.  That has not stopped generations of conservatives from baselessly stoking fears about Democrats using the votes of noncitizens to win elections — and that right-wing propaganda campaign has dramatically escalated this election cycle.
Trump’s media propagandists followed his lead
Trump and his allies largely focused on dishonestly attacking mail-in voting as a purported vector for fraud in 2020. This year, they’ve downplayed those concerns as the GOP built its own mail-in voting campaign.  Instead, Trump is warning that an avalanche of noncitizen votes could swing the race as he tries to undermine confidence in the election results. He declared at last month’s presidential debate that there are “illegal immigrants coming” and “they’re trying to get them to vote,” echoing a version of the “Great Replacement” conspiracy theory that was once limited to white nationalist fever swamps but is now part of the GOP dogma. He also urged congressional Republicans to pass the “Safeguard American Voter Eligibility” or SAVE Act — unnecessary legislation for a fake problem. Media Matters reviewed coverage on Fox News, Fox Business, and Newsmax between September 6, when House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) unveiled a continuing resolution to avoid a government shutdown that included the text of the SAVE Act, through October 2.
Special Counsel Jack Smith’s recently unsealed filing revealed that Donald Trump was pushing the phony baloney “noncitizen voting” claims in the 2020 elections. Trump and the right-wing media are on the same course to repeat their lies about “noncitizens voting”.

This is such a weird post to make, but I feel like I have to send it off somehow!
I made this blog when I was 15. I'm now 29. Dang. (I always thought it was toward the end of 2009 when I first made this thing, but according to my sources it may have in fact been early 2010... oops. I've been a fraud this entire time.)
This blog is one of the most special things I've ever had, if not THE most special. It's a time capsule of every moment of my life since I was a freshman in high school -- or it would be if I didn't delete all those posts back then, but summer afterwards is close enough. I count myself incredibly lucky that this even exists at all. Until this website shuts down (in probably the quite-near future) I will always be able to consult this page for every picture and every memory I could ever want to revisit from my teen years and early 20s.
But over time this has become a ghost town. Really, most of my friends stopped using this website YEARS and years ago, and a lot of my online friends have also left by now. I'm in contact with all the important people on other platforms. Meanwhile, this platform is accessed primarily by people who have no access to me otherwise, because tumblr has no proper privacy measures by design. My blog is no longer viewed by friends and online acquaintances, but by stalkery freaks, both of the lusty online kind and the psycho real life kind. I stopped posting about my personal life forever ago now primarily because of that, but even the occasional shout-into-the-void vaguepost gets those people off.
With that being the state of affairs here, I think it's time to just shut this down. I'm sure I'll get on here from time to time and maybe occasionally post if it seems fitting, and I'll forever go over my memories here when they pop into my head, but I'm not going to actively log onto and post on tumblr anymore. I have to close this vector of surveillance and pain for my own well-being.
Anyway... eternal gratitude for this utter trash-heap of a website. I love you forever. Let's not be strangers.

…I. Mm. Nah, Sorry! I’m meanposting. OP this isn’t meanposting directed at you specifically, this is me being exasperated in general at people participating in systems they never fully interrogate and end up shocked when they’re fucked over in a way they didn’t expect. You sound stressed out trying to navigate a situation that is impacting you and your community heavily and I’m sorry. You’re worried about this beast’s claws and I’m showing you its teeth.
Anyway. Digital artists and illustrators: the “count the teeth and toes and joints and shadows” thing was NOT meant for you. It was NOT meant to differentiate AI Art from Real Art. You could fuck these up any day of the week and compete with a big robot market and it still wouldn’t fix your audience numbers. The fact that this is how y’all are concerned about the issue makes me want to scream. The media communications and OpSec blindspot on this is. Bad. It’s really bad!
The CHECK THE TEETH AND BODY FEATURES AND PERSPECTIVE ISN’T FOR ART. IT’S FOR FAKE PEOPLE AND COMPANIES. IT’S FOR PUTTING FAKE FACES TO MASS-DISINFORMATION CAMPAIGNS. IT’S FOR PEOPLE GETTING ACCESS TO YOUR PARENTS’ RETIREMENT FUND. IT’S FOR FALSE INCITING EVENTS TO TRIGGER REAL-WORLD UNREST. There are articles for boomers, gen X, millennials, and zoomers rn talking about How To Tell A Video Is Untrustworthy and they talk about “lack of a clean, professional logo” but MY parents certainly could not tell the difference between a Fiver Logo 50 Purchase (vectorized, applied neatly) and a professional logo for an actual company (raster, 20x20 px) applied poorly by an intern who doesn’t get paid for 85 views on the published youtube video. They DEFINITELY wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between A Real Video With Real Audio and a fucking Joe Biden Racist Deepfake Meme That Escaped Containment. These “public internet safety bulletins” are going out of date before they can even circulate for the simplest of things, not even getting into the more advanced (and increasingly accessible!) forms of fraud and fake content.
Wanna see something terrifying? HERE! MAKE UP A GUY! EVERY ONE IS DIFFERENT! THIS IS THE SAME CLASS OF TOOL PEOPLE USE TO MASS-CREATE BOTS THAT ARE LIKE “thank you, judge. As a real human person who isn’t white, I love racism and hope you bring it to more communities. Check out my Real Person PFP”: https://thispersondoesnotexist.com/
Please. Please for the love of patreon exclusive brush packs or whatever else you give a shit about. Get some perspective. Your art is your career, it’s your life, I know. It is Not the most insidious or dangerous trend in AI images and to frame its rapid advancement and utilization in an “oh well, what can ya do! don’t get burnt out, just do your thing and follow Real People™” way puts people at risk. Including you and your fellow artists.
The point shouldn't be to identify for sure 100% what is ai art and what isn't. I keep seeing posts advising one to look out for wonky perspective (as if perspective doesn't routinely trip up even the most experienced artists) or to pay attention to fudged detailing (as if impressionism wasn't one of the most influential artistic movements in history), and I think that's coming from a good place but frankly it's a losing battle. Remember when everyone was on about counting the fingers or counting the teeth, and a week later they had that shit ironed out completely? All you're really doing is giving these people more data points to work with to refine their algorithm. It's just going to be constantly shifting goalposts, and at a certain point real artists are going to get exhausted trying to make their art look as not algorithmically generated as possible. It'll be impossible to keep up.
So what should we do? Honestly, I think old practices are still best practices. Find real artists and follow them. Don't repost art, and dont spread reposted art. If something doesn't have a source, skip it. Support artists you like, either by sharing their work directly or donating. And if someone's work looks suspicious? Maybe give them a second look. See some of their other art before jumping to conclusions.
And yes, that means sometimes, you're gonna be tricked. Some people are going to fly under the radar and pass off ai art as their own. And that sucks, and they're liars, but you can't let the obsession with bad actors police real artists out of their communities, or discourage new artists from entering the scene.

How Insurtechs Are Strengthening Core Software with Advanced Cybersecurity Measures
As cyber threats continue to evolve in complexity, securing sensitive customer information has become a top priority, particularly within the core software systems that drive the insurance industry. Insurers are enhancing their cybersecurity efforts, and it’s fascinating to see how they are approaching this critical challenge.
Many insurtech companies are leading this transformation by incorporating state-of-the-art technologies, such as AI-powered threat detection systems soc security operations center, into their platforms. Instead of merely reacting to cyberattacks, these companies are taking proactive steps to identify and mitigate risks before they escalate into significant issues.
Tumblr media
The Growing Need for Cybersecurity in Insurance
Property & Casualty (P&C) insurance companies are sitting on a wealth of sensitive personal and financial data, making them prime targets for cybercriminals. As insurers embrace technologies like cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT) to streamline operations, they gain substantial efficiencies—but also open themselves to new vulnerabilities.
For insurers, investing in cybersecurity isn’t just about avoiding regulatory penalties. In today's increasingly hostile digital environment, robust cybersecurity is essential for long-term survival.
To underscore this point, let’s take a look at a real-world example that rattled the insurance sector: the 2020 data breach at Folksam, one of Sweden’s largest insurance providers. This incident served as a major wake-up call for the industry. Folksam unintentionally leaked sensitive data for around one million customers, not due to an external cyberattack, but because of an internal oversight. In an attempt to analyze customer behavior and provide more personalized services, the company shared private customer information with tech giants such as Facebook, Google, Microsoft, LinkedIn, and Adobe.
While Folksam stated there was no evidence of misuse by these third parties, the breach raised serious concerns among customers and regulators alike. It demonstrated that even well-intentioned actions could lead to significant security failures if proper safeguards are not in place.
Core Platform Security: A Critical Priority
Your core platform—the system responsible for policy management, claims processing, billing, and customer relations—is the backbone of your insurance business. But it also becomes a prime target for cyberattacks if not adequately protected.
AI: The Ultimate Security Co-Pilot
Leading insurers are increasingly integrating AI-powered soc security operations center “co-pilots” into their core platforms. These AI-driven systems analyze vast amounts of data to:
Detect Anomalies: Machine learning algorithms can identify unusual patterns in claims, underwriting, or policy modifications that may indicate fraudulent activity or a security breach. For instance, an unexpected increase in claims from a particular region or a sudden surge in requests to modify policy details could signal potential fraud.
Automate Incident Response: Once a threat is detected, AI can automatically isolate compromised systems, preventing the breach from spreading. This might involve shutting down affected servers or disabling user accounts to contain the damage.
Predict Attack Vectors: By analyzing data from threat intelligence feeds and the dark web, AI can help insurers anticipate and defend against future attacks. This might include identifying emerging malware strains or pinpointing vulnerabilities in third-party software.
Take Zurich Insurance, for example. Their AI models soc security operations center successfully identified and stopped a credential-stuffing attack targeting their Asian SME clients, blocking thousands of fraudulent login attempts within hours. This kind of rapid response is only achievable when AI is deeply embedded in the core platform.
