a list of literary references in aitsf: nirvana initiative chapter titles

tidied up this ol' twitter thread. basically: every single chapter title in aini is a reference to a work of literature, i figured out most of them. here's an explanation of where they came from and what they mean. let us begin.

"a strange tale"/"dispossessed"/"alone" (chapter 0) reference 'the turn of the screw' by henry james.

the framing device of this novella is a group of friends reading a manuscript written by someone else. ryuki being interrogated by mizuki is something of a framing device for what we perceive as his 'side' of the story, six years ago. this is also a quintessential piece of gothic fiction, which is famously concerned with the subconscious and repression- two themes aitsf is very interested in!

"anyone imagines"/"ought to know" (ryuki chapter 1) reference the bible verse corinthians 8:2

"If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know"

naix is an ideology that has the power of religion over its believers. this quotation reflects that people who don't believe in the ideology who think they understand the nature of the world (and believe it's real) are ignorant to the fact it's a simulation.

"nothing to be done"/"go" (ryuki chapter 2) reference 'waiting for godot' by samuel beckett

"nothing to be done" is something of a reoccurring joke in the play. much time is spent watching characters act aimlessly, accomplish little, and lack purpose. these chapters in the game have a lot to do with ryuki feeling frustrated by tokiko's indecipherable philosophical ramblings.

"farewell"/"joy for anguish"/"smile for tears" (ryuki chapter 3) reference 'farewell' by anne bronte.

"And who can tell but Heaven, at last, May answer all my thousand prayers, And bid the future pay the past With joy for anguish, smiles for tears?"

this poem is about the pain of saying goodbye to a loved one. of course, "saying goodbye" is a classic euphemism for death. these titles likely reference shoma reckoning with komeji's death. the joy/anguish duo are strange parallel chapters where komeji lives or dies.

"well known"/"mind of god" (ryuki c4 r1) reference 'a brief history of time' by stephen hawking

"If we do discover a theory of everything…it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason—for then we would truly know the mind of God."

these chapters introduce us to tearer as a character, who is, of course, closely linked to naix and their ideology. naix believe they understood the nature of human existence, and accomplished the goal of knowing 'the mind of god'.

"i found me"/"past its ken" (ryuki c4 r2) reference "the masked face" by thomas hardy

"I found me in a great surging space, I" At either end a door" ... "There once complained a goosequill pen To the scribe of the Infinite Of the words it had to write Because they were past its ken."

this poem is about people with a negative outlook who struggle to comprehend that there is more to the world than they know. shoma only believed in shallow simulation theory to justify his depression. "past its ken" means beyond one's established knowledge.

"not all a dream"/"she was the universe" (ryuki chapter 5 r1) reference "darkness" by lord byron

"I had a dream, which was not all a dream. The bright sun was extinguish'd" ... "Darkness had no need Of aid from them—She was the Universe."

this poem describes an apocalypse that resembles a natural disaster. fitting that this route leads to the explosion ending, involving the collapse of the underground cave. darkness becomes "the universe"- ryuki is traumatised.

"pass mildly away"/"end where i begun" (mizuki c1) reference "a valediction: forbidding mourning" by john donne

"As virtuous men pass mildly away, And whisper to their souls to go" … "Thy firmness makes my circle just, And makes me end where I begun."

this poem is about two lovers parting, but i think the game uses it to reflect platonic relationships. kizuna has lost bibi. bibi lost mizuki. mizuki lost date. family members who love each other deeply have been apart for a long time.

"the expense of spirit"/"hell" (mizuki chapter 3) reference sonnet 129 by william shakespeare.

"The expense of spirit in a waste of shame Is lust in action..."

this poem theorises that after people satisfy their lust (their desires), they're left with shame. this could be a metaphor for chikara's experiments, but he doesn't seem to feel shame. i think it's about mizuki wanting answers about the institute until she gets them and they're painful.

"all living things"/"of arms and of man" (mizuki chapter 4 m2) references virgil's "the aenid".

"I sing of arms and of the man, fated to be an exile, who long since left the land of Troy and came to Italy to the shores of Lavinium"

i think a parallel is drawn between lien and the protag of the aenid, aeneas. he flees the fall of troy and travels to rome, becoming the original descendant of the ancient romans. lien escapes the 'tragedy' of his life of crime and becomes something of a hero to kizuna.

"who's there"/"bid the soldiers shoot" (mizuki chapter 4 m2/m3) reference the first and final lines of william shakespeare's "hamlet".

the first line is spoken by a guard who hears the ghost of hamlet sr. in this route, jin's corpse is found in the freezer... not quite a ghost. the final line is spoken by fortinbras, an invading prince, upon storming the palace and finding the corpses of the whole cast. he commands the shots to commemorate the deaths of the royalty. lien and kizuna escape among the gunfire of chieda's armed goons... some commemoration.

"all that we are" (mizuki c5 m2) is a buddha quote.

“All that we are is the result of what we have thought: it is founded on our thoughts and made up of our thoughts. If a man speak or act with an evil thought, suffering follows him as the wheel follows the hoof of the beast that draws the wagon…. If a man speak or act with a good thought, happiness follows him like a shadow that never leaves him.”

this chapter precedes gen and amame's end. gen highlights that he considers amame to be a naturally kind and loving person in a way that others haven't been towards him. this quotation implies that good things follow kind people, which doesn't follow considering the tragic end amame gets here.

"sweet silent thought" (mizuki chapter 5 m3) references shakespeare's sonnet 30

When to the sessions of sweet silent thought I summon up remembrance of things past, I sigh the lack of many a thing I sought, And with old woes new wail my dear time's waste

this poem is about regrets. when you think "sweet silent thoughts" (contemplate your life), you feel unhappy and consumed by what-ifs. interesting that this chapter is the direct opposite of the poem- lien and kizuna take their chance and run away together. no regrets!

"births"/"the end of craving" (mizuki c5 m1) is a buddha quote once more.

simply put, to reach the end of craving is to achieve the titular nirvana and a higher state of being.

"braver than all flowers" (epilogue) references "proof of immortality "by william carlos williams

"for there is one thing braver than all flowers; richer than clear gems; wider than the sky"

this is a sort of humorous poem about how the one thing that humans throughout history have in common is ignorance. maybe it's a ref to how the mizukis used their wit and investigation skills to overcome that ignorance and win the day?

"all this happened, more or less" (ryuki diverge) references the opening line of slaughterhouse-five by kurt vonnegut.

this is regarded as a crazy opening line for a crazy novel. it's the literary equivalent of "well, that happened" for better or worse, much like this ending.

the only currently missing reference is 'traveler'/'left behind'.

I am reminded that I had a dream last night where there was another adventure verse movie after Kizuna and the beginning, and it involved Taichi and Yamato in a restaurant and Taichi was really sad but Yamato walked over and kissed him on the lips??? PSA. / 2024 goals !

the reason i haven't been writing a lot is i've mostly been on my OC trying to play catch up on her lore and worldbuilding. you can find her in the pinned post . also i've been planning what i want to do for mizuki for 2024, and my interest very normal love for best girl only gets better each year. i just hope to do justice by her in my own way as i figure out what i'm doing post AI1.

as i'm canon divergent and i have a few things to talk about that i'll be hoping to capture or discuss hopefully some of this year that are parts of my mizuki's canon ! so i'll try doing it in uh, the most organized way because one goal i have at least for 2024 is better blog organization . it's too late to make a sideblog for musings / etc . THINGS I'LL BE DOING THIS YEAR . - focusing on catch up. unless a thread is requested to be dropped, please message me if so, i'll be continuing it. some i will drop for my own sanity, not because i don't want to write with you again! - seasonal / holidays asks will just be holiday asks with no specific content save for people i owe, ex: bubblez' kizuna or thane's trunks, etc. why? i think mizuki deserves to celebrate the holidays or anything remotely happy because while aiba is arguably as of now her best support system, let's be real, i genuinely want to find and work on any of her relationships because she's severely lacking in support. even from 2023. i'll try to stay more on the ball for again, my own sanity this year when i reblog them. - i will be writing my version of post-canon mizuki and child mizuki, that goes from her time before adoption from date, aka with shoko and renju which will be tagged appropriately because honestly mizuki doesn't know many reliable adult figures in her life, and it makes me very sad that she's arguably more mature than...most people save say, boss or pewter or hitomi etc. she deserves better! just because AI2 certainly isn't everyone's cup of tea, and it isn't mine in a LOT of ways, i still took stuff from it, and i don't think it's fair to halt mizuki at 12 forever just because we fairly have critique of NI / AINI and not let her grow up and experience a hopeful future and more bonds to fill the huge hole in her heart. let her be happy is the goal !

now i'm working on mizuki's post canon verse, as i've restarted aitsf 1 to move to aitsf 2, where i'll take a few things that i won't likely budge on unless you meet me halfway !

the verse title for anything post-canon and generally for 18 year old mizuki / teen mizuki or post explosion mizuki will be this verse tag!

now onto her post canon details i do have figured out.

mizuki and aiba are partners. one thing that's consistent is through her time with date, that can still be a thing because they ARE a family, albeit i feel estranged granted the resolution route is canon, so mizuki never really got to bond with him, get her aphonia cured, vice versa, is aiba's care through time in his eye socket appreciating the girl's strength and endurance and intelligence in both games. you can have more than one partner, and until / if we have another game and mizuki possibly gets another partner and i debate the chemistry, aiba is mizuki's partner and aiba is generally mostly with mizuki, but that doesn't mean she isn't with date too. she can love more than one person. and both dates are equally dear to her.

mizuki was still experimented on until 3 years old at horadori institute, albeit she has blurry memories at best, and i debate if she should fully remember! one factor of her godlike superhuman strength. but she also is trained in most japanese martial arts she can get her hands on! she is NOT a clone of bibi, bibi doesn't exist whatsoever despite me enjoying her personality, even if i felt it was made to mimic mizuki herself, if others who have muses with canon bonds to bibi, please talk to me so we can plot it out if you keep her as part of your canon ! as long as we meet halfway i'm more than happy to work with you !

mizuki is still a rookie detective and psyncer at ABIS. in my canon, she actually looks to ryuki, also new, but older for advice and i like to think as dual protagonists that they should have been, they get to do some cases together! only if a ryuki is willing of course.

for now, she's working on small to medium cases with aiba. the explosion still happened that took her vision clean out. she does this because of the gruesome history she has, not wanting others to suffer the same kind of unimaginable trauma she has with both biological parents murdered in various means and i'm still debating whether tearer even exists. he likely will, and if people also have the other culprit's actions in their canon, please talk to me too and i'll work together with you on that !

mizuki still runs lemniscate and sunfish pocket. she doesn't have the heart yet to really let go of her neglectful biological father's companies, even if he didn't care for her in a way she needed. in time, i'll see how she feels about this, as i do plan for mizuki to continue her education, as the girl is extremely intelligent.

mizuki is still best friends with iris, but my mizuki also considers amame and kizuna two of her really close friends, but they aren't a sister to her like iris is. they're certainly caring of her, and she'd protect them with her life, but she isn't as close to them as iris, and all of them do hang out together from what i've seen.

my mizuki is a lot more skeptical for the kizunas out there, of lien. she isn't comfortable with his advances towards one of her best friends and generally is a lot more protective. that said, it's all according to people who write kizzy. naturally she's fiercely protective of iris, who now is someone who works for her too as the president of an entertainment company.

my mizuki comes from the MIZUKI ROUTE in terms of character development but NOT THE PLOT EVENTS . iris is not inhabited by so sejima. date and mizuki DO bond like a father and daughter. date unless a date talks to me, DOES cure her aphonia or it's hitomi herself like canon because hitomi is the mom she deserves imho. but i tend to take away the development of her character and their relationship otherwise i feel the date family bond is....pretty estranged or mizuki is MUCH more doubtful of date caring for her at all granted the routes and how she tends to get overlooked a lot.

basically i want to as one of i'm sure other mizuki-mun's, give her my best in my own way, at my own pace !

and those are my goals as i replay the games (again!) . i hope to keep developing mizuki and thank you for being so patient with me as always, everyone ! also kinda sorry for the long post but it was all necessary !

.....i never answered this i am SO sorry </3 gonna try to list off random hcs for a mix of characters!!

1)yuuki + nikei bond over drinking a absurd amount of soda. yuuki drinking mountain dew will always be real to me, and we knowww nikei likes weird and obscure sodas

2)kizuna struggles with being possessive over her items and doesn't like people borrowing her stuff, but if she actually tried it, she'd realize she really likes buying gifts for people

3)kanata isn't super into fashion but she likes feeling pretty, and often feels cute in like... flowy dresses, but she rarely has the time/energy, and feels a bit weird "dressing up"

4)while he felt more in his element in the killing game/had reason to distance himself from the class, and not try to bond with them, in non-despair verses, tsurugi feels really awkward around the others, and has a hard time engaging and making friends. part of this is because he befriended kouhei via kouhei looking at him and going "is for me?", part of it is because he's. ya know. still extremely traumatized by the uh... other thing that happened with kouhei

5)kinji can't draw for shit. like, objectively speaking, he can't get his pencil to do what he wants

6)yoruko dedicates one day a week to taking care of her hair, nails, skin, etc. it helps her feel in control + comfortable with her experience after being bullied, but once she does some more healing with her past, she realizes it's just genuinely soothing now

7)emma isn't very popular with her fellow actors. she tends to isolate a lot when on set, and isn't close with her co-stars. she's very friendly with reports, fans, et cetera though.

8)haruhiko is very "man i wish i liked dudes, girls are totally sweet, but sometimes i wish i could date guys too..." not realizing he literally just described an attraction to both genders.

9)im just generally a queer yuri truther. i remember seeing people say hc'ing him as lgbt was gross. i for one think that looking at how he acts in canon and going "yeah this is fine and healthy and indicative of a good mental status" is gross.

10)mikako had a "not like other girls" phase which she has officially left behind her, but only semi-recently. while working on undoing that mentality, she realized she's sapphic (i hc her as a-spec too tho, maybe aro lesbian? my identity hcs change every three seconds whoopsie)

Translation Notes: I had to take lot of creative liberties. Due to the fact that no pronoun is used in the entirety of the song, I had to decide which to use in the translation. I settled on first person. Though some verses did feel more suited to be sung from third person. Additionally, I tried my best to preserve sentence structure and meaning but honestly verse [6] was quite hard to translate neatly. It might not be 1:1 translation. In verse [1], I translated it as "In a rainy townscape" although the preposition is missing in Romaji counterpart. I felt that was the original intent of that verse.

You 100% need to see it in theaters. Having people react with you is so unifying as well as seeing all different types of people there. A kinda old guy sat next to me by himself and I knew he must’ve grown with the 80s turtles and was ready to see what’s next.

There's certain things you just have to experience in a theater for a lot reasons. Movies like Spider-Verse, No Way Home, Scott Pilgrim and Deathly Hallows wouldn't have been the same watching it at home for the first time because of the audience interaction. Hell, I even saw Digimon: The Movie in theaters with only 1 other person aside from me and my mom and it was still a memorable vibe because it was one of my favorite shows on the big screen. It felt great to have that feeling brought back again with the Tri series hitting theaters here.

And then there's movies I wish I got to experience in theaters like Cowboy Bebop, Dark Side Of Dimensions, Speed Racer, Last Evolution Kizuna and The Mitchells Vs The Machines like it was originally intended. Sometimes you just have to be there to bask in the aura of it all. Also, I saw the Megan Fox TMNT films (which I enjoyed at the time but all the BTS shenanigans took me out of it) in theaters so I would be crazy to be there for that and not Mutant Mayhem.

My commentary:

I’m aware there’s quite a few ongoing and recent fan events right now that might have had Taichi or Koushiro involvement, but I was tied up with offline things; Thus, this time is an A.M.V. that is mainly Koushiro-centric, but TAICHI does get some quite good focus too, and, specifically, also their (Very Good) relationship! There is also some vid-style analysis on the dynamics of Izumi Family, as well as the Yagami Family. It’s also yet another "analysis” of Koushiro & Taichi in general, too. (Basically any of my other ships can also be read in, in varying combos.)

Notes:

This is the preliminary 1st version of this A.M.V. Hopefully you find some enjoyment as it is now though! The 1st part had taken about 45~ min already. The 2nd verse + chorus took about another 35~ min. This 3rd section took about 30 min at start, another 1 hr to wrap up scenes through the interlude, and already had a total of 1 crashing of my editor. The last segment took about 45 min total; Thus, total time spent on this? 3 hours and 35~ min or so. These may not be final scenes as I make future adjustments. (However, it came together well despite the crash!)

There is a tiny bit of scenery shots from beginning of Kizuna, then, by the interlude, some more notable Kizuna spoilers involving Taichi & Koushiro mainly, but you will see a scene involving Chosen. Tri spoilers, mainly Taichi & Koushiro supporting each other moments, are also added in the interlude and the ending; there are small moments from Saikai, Kokuhaku & Kyousei, mainly. The ends of Kokuhaku, Kyousei & Bokura no Mirai / Our Future are not spoiled, but there is lead-up. Kokuhaku middle-end spoiler occurs in the final chorus; a scene namely showing Taichi and Koushiro supporting each other (I’ve used it often in past A.M.V.s). A tiny Bokura no Mirai moment of just Koushiro is also included.

No. 1: Mimi Tachikawa

Dating your idols, what a foolish, childish dream. But Miyako is a fool, and she was very much a child. The fantasies she had of a forbidden romance, of Mimi taking her by the hand to a field of flowers that belonged to them and them only, of Mimi reciprocating her undying love for her. But fantasies don't belong to reality. Mimi only saw her as a quirky friend. Mimi can't be shackled to someone just because they're her biggest fan. The only thing left for Miyako was to wake up from her fairy tale.

{Behold! Miyako's infamous (?) list of crushes and significant others she had until Ken and her started dating sometime after Kizuna (or The Beginning, we all know they won't be dating in The Beginning).

This list also serves for verses were Miyako won't be dating and marrying Ken. In this case, I'll use the right beaus according to the verse - for example, beaus she dated during college won't appear if I'm writing on her teen verse.

Also, in threads where Miyako is actually dating one of her ex-beaus, they'll be automatically out of the list.

The beaus also serve to give more life to non-shipping threads, to make her pine and comment about someone she's into if the subject ever comes into picture.

Finally, the beaus are inspired by the muses I shipped with her along the years. I'll adapt the existing characters from other series into the Adventure universe and I'll try to alter a bit the OCs enough to not cause problems while keeping some of the characteristics that made my Miyako attracted to them. I'll remove any of the non-Adv beaus from the list by their mun's request!!!!

Notes:

This A.M.V. is currently UN-FINISHED. As of now, only the 2nd chorus and a bit more through the interlude, is (partially!) completed. Hopefully you find some enjoyment so far though! The 1st part had taken about 45~ min already. The 2nd verse + chorus took about another 35~ min. This 3rd section took about 30 min at start, another 1 hr to wrap up scenes through the interlude, and already had a total of 1 crashing of my editor. These may not be final scenes as I make adjustments. (However, it came together well despite the crash!)

There is a tiny bit of scenery shots from beginning of Kizuna, then, by the interlude, some more Kizuna spoilers involving Taichi & Koushiro mainly, but you will see a scene of the Chosen. Tri spoilers, mainly Taichi & Koushiro supporting each other moments, are also added in this new section; there are moments from Saikai, Kokuhaku and Kyousei, mainly. The ends of Kokuhaku and Kyousei are not spoiled, but there is lead-up.

I recently gotten into daikeru which lead me into daikenkeru and daiken... and was wondering if u have any headcannon on them

First of all, this ask is amazing. It encompasses all the best ships. Secondly, I’m not sure which of these you’re looking for headcanons of, so I’ll just do all three of them.

Just a heads up, as with most of my headcanons, these take place when they are ADULTS (Kizuna-era and beyond). I won’t post any explicit headcanons here, but I might be persuaded to write explicit fic......🤫

I’ll post a bonus one here: Jun makes a surprise visit to Daisuke’s apartment while Daisuke has Takeru over for a date. Daisuke is too embarrassed to explain to Jun what’s going on, but she gets V-mon to spill the beans. Then she stays for dinner anyway, much to Daisuke’s chagrin. Takeru thinks it’s really funny

Daiken:

Daisuke is annoyed at how Ken never seems to react when Daisuke flirts with him. He makes up a fake boyfriend to get Ken jealous. Ken sees through this really easily and realizes Daisuke likes him

Daisuke brings Ken lunch to his office at Digimon Criminal Affairs every once in a while. People at the office start thinking Daisuke is Ken’s boyfriend, and Ken doesn’t correct them. Ken has a really bad day, and Daisuke randomly chooses that day to bring him lunch. Ken kisses him on the cheek

Daisuke loves when Ken grows his hair out. The firsts time Daisuke runs his fingers through Ken’s long hair, he tries to be sneaky about it and pretends like he’s putting a friendly arm around Ken’s shoulders. The second time Daisuke touches Ken’s hair, his hand lingers and Ken’s heartbeat races the whole time. Daisuke of course hears his heartbeat and realizes Ken may have feelings for him

Ken likes when Daisuke has some stubble. When they start dating, he finds himself drawn to kissing Daisuke’s jaw when Daisuke forgets to shave

Daikenkeru:

The three of them host a youtube show together where they drink and read questions about Digimon and the Digital World sent to them on social media. Takeru knows a lot of Digimon history, Ken knows a lot of Digital World geography, and Daisuke brings a lot of energy to the show (also he picks the questions). Ken doesn’t drink, so he has the job of keeping the other two in check. It can get a little over the top the longer a taping session goes on. The camera crew ships all three of them. (god I need fanart of this youtube verse so bad).

BASED ON THIS POST -- Daisuke pretends to get drunk, then pretends to need Ken to carry him home, and Takeru records it on his phone while trying to get Daisuke to sing stupid songs. But when they drop Daisuke off at his apartment, they find out he was faking being drunk and he just wanted Ken and Takeru to come over. Hijinks and more ensue.

Daisuke is annoyed at how Takeru and Ken are either oblivious to or completely ignore his flirting. He wants them both. He decides to ask Takeru to be his fake boyfriend in order to win over Ken, and then he asks Ken to be his fake boyfriend to win over Takeru. Daisuke thinks this plan will work, and it does, just not the way he expected it to. Ken doesn’t like the idea of making others jealous, so he just asks Takeru point blank if he’s interested in Daisuke. Takeru says yes, and finds the whole charade hilarious. Daisuke notices them together and thinks they’re on a date with each other, barges in, and gets jealous. Some other stuff happens, some lessons are learned, and idk they start a poly relationship with the understanding that jealousy is not healthy for any of them

Hikari and Miyako start dating, throwing Daisuke, Takeru, and Ken for a loop. During the course of a conversation with the girls, Miyako tells the three boys to just start dating each other for god’s sake

Surprise Fourth Option - Kenkeru!

Takeru buys Ken Sherlock Holmes-style detective hat for Christmas and Ken secretly loves it
