ohhh my god i fell over and spilled. ohhhh no i fellover and i dropped this smoothie recipe i wrote when i was 6. i hope nobody interested in recent studies on indigenous led anthropology and nonwestern thinking looks at my delicious smoothie recipe that is unrelated to indigenous archaeology and the concept of other-than-human persons introduced in this post/the greater da lore .... perhaps this smoothie recipe may even help you understand why the writers' centrism is particularly insidious despite creating a world that is explicitly parallel to (some) real-life Indigenous North American conceptions of the World..... oohggggggfff how could i be so foolish.... my smootheie. anyway if you are uninterested in my yummy delicious smoothie mayhaps you will enjoy the following excerpts (apologies in advance for smoothie related jargon and more thoughts under the cut):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
it is genuinely very interesting to me how the da writers managed to create a world that is empathetic to traditionally Indigenous conceptions of People and Things and yet do their best to lead players away from sympathizing with the indigenous plight in favor of their centrist (read: anti-Indigenous) agenda. it was often expressed to me that the Northern American anthropology of the past was in many ways a failure because of the eurocentric ideals of its practitioners. NOT because an outsider could never hope to understand their 'mythical ways,' but because the very basis of Indigenous and Settler Thought were at odds with one another in some very fundamental ways. where the Enlightened European mind saw People, Places, and Things, many indigenous american tribes do not draw such a hard line between Personhood and Thing. and yet despite its academic roots tracing back to the 1960s, the field of Indigenous Archaeology is still rather young and underrepresented in anthropology as a whole because it is counterproductive to the interests of those who settled on the land who would much rather forget the atrocities that preceded their presence on the continent and the harm it did, not only to People, but to Land/Things.
but the world of Thedas is explicitly alive! even in instances where the writers were clearly unable to see the World as having agency without anthropomorphizing them, the choice to do so lends further to the conclusion that the world is alive and deserving of agency. the trees, the mountains, even the forest itself blurs the line between person and thing as sentient beings borne out of the land. And the Fade has a tangible, material impact on the waking world. Whereas real-life anthropologists must argue the validity of factoring in dreams and the mystical imagination into their work, Veilguard discusses at length (without much opportunity for player input) the Personhood of a spirit. the Ancient Elves were Spirits-Made-People. Manfred and Spite show that they are capable of growth and learning (although I have problems with how they are both written as not-quite-yet-deserving of personhood). The Veil is actively failing (and has been for the entire series) and it is hurting people on both sides. It would be in the best interest of the World as a being with agency to do away with it.
BUT. because this might lead to real-life parallels with land back and reparative justice for Indigenous people, the writers do a quick heel-turn and explain that sundering the Veil will lead to a massive loss of life in the waking world. which is frankly an irresponsibly written parallel to the real world and leaning more far right than the writers wish to appear. when the status quo is inherently beneficial to some and harmful to others based on their race, gender, what have you - yes. it is indeed harmful to uphold the status quo. it is necessary in this case to look critically at why the writers made this the case. the world exploding if you lean away from centrism is not a real life example that they have drawn from. sympathy for solas's cause is destructive because of the writers' bias, not because there is no other conceivable way in which this story could end. if you were to come away from this game still knowing very little about the real-world parallels it draws upon, you would be dangerously close to perpetuating the harmful practices that are actively deteriorating Indigenous peoples' connection to their own history. in the real world, it is not enough for Indigenous people to simply throw away all ties to their culture and assimilate themselves into the western world. they will still be targeted by predatory government practices or by hate groups regardless of how "well" they adhere to a system that was designed to exclude them.
it's hard to say what i wish the writers would have done with Veilguard because the roots for this final narrative failing have been in place since the beginning. but if the game were truly meant to be a roleplaying experience, rather than a cautionary tale, they would have let you choose options that the writers themselves may not have agreed with, wrt choosing to tear down the Veil. if anything i hope that a lot of these recent retrospectives on the series inspires you to do more to engage with and seek out Indigenous voices in whatever you do. i promise your life will not be lessened by diversity of thought, and that it will instead help you understand what you really think and why you think that way. now go forth. and do anthropology on video game characters

extra notes for why bearded vulture in particular:
- these vultures have a VERY unique diet!! they usually avoid meat, and instead eat bone marrow⁉️ i feel like you can relate this to godot in a few ways… (1) you could call it being “picky” or having “more refined tastes” ,, a godot vulture would 100% be like, “oh… you eat raw meat??? ha,, hahah hmmm, of course you would. *I*, on the other hand, only eat pure bone marrow” and (2) something about ignoring the meat and going just for the bones feels very,, thoughtful? like, not calculated, but purposeful?? idk, i don’t quite know how to explain it,, just vibes…..
- their head feathers look like godots hair !!! lmao
- they have red eyes !!
- i also want to mention that apparently, harming an egyptian vulture was punishable by death in ancient egypt,,,, something something dahlia hawthorne
-i also was happy to be able to include some red on his wings, even despite the poison turning them white
-oh and vultures are big !!! (similar to red kite edgeworth)
bird was originally suggested by @aromanticbride (hope u dont mind the tag) wayy back when,,, ty !! can’t believe it’s taken me so long to sketch this one out.

So, Ramattra huh? :3c
Tumblr media
Ok so um. He’s completely taken over my mind for the past month 😭 I’m in love with this man
Usually I’m a sucker for the villains who are evil mostly for the sake of being evil or aggressive monster types but he’s like… morally gray complex? My (personal opinion) least favorite thing about supposedly morally grey characters is when they’re basically just evil except they go “oh but my backstory,” >:/ But here you can see why, there’s a lot of injustices towards omnics in the overwatch universe and you can see why he’s fighting so hard to make a change, even through any means necessary.
I’ve only started playing recently and every time I play as him I just find every little thing he does attractive orz the way he moves is so determined and confident, the way his hand strains when he’s shooting his primary fire/raising his shield… his scarf makes him look so majestic when he runs… his hair, gives him this effect that makes him look elegant? I want to tie his hair back for him huhuguhghuh
And oh my god don’t get me started on his nemesis form I’m dead 💀 He turns into this huge beast of a robot with big arms?? And his voice gets an extra.. filter to it that makes him sound scarier and growlier? I used to not like how his original arms were still visible, but now it’s yet another thing why I love him uhghehgfg he looks so confident with his arms crossed while he’s pummeling his enemies into submission and his cable hair flowing in the wind liks swoosh… and things get ramped up when he’s doing his annihilation ultimate, he can just run into the enemy team and suck their life force(?) Also this is a meta reason but I think it’s hot when he ults and the team scatters away from him 😳
and ough HIS VOICE AUGH HIS VOICE!! He always sounds so controlled and collected, and when he’s in nemesis form it’s like his restrained rage gets unleashed, phew… ngl I’ve been rewatching “Ramattra Voice Line” videos so much jkdshfnejf I love all versions of his ult line, whether its “SUFFER, AS I HAVE!” or “Rip them to pieces,”, or even the april fools line bc I just think he’s silly and dramatic in that one 🥺
I also watch a lot of his interactions, because despite his (understandable) hatred for humans, he’s respectful and polite to a lot of the other overwatch heroes. I imagine it’d be easy to write him as someone who dislikes all humans, but he shows appreciation to humans he thinks are kind and helpful to omnics, even if they might not like him. Even to humans he isn’t a fan of his conversations are still polite and reserved, or at the very least, he’s passive aggressive- but he never gets into a “grr I hate all of you” thing that Reaper has (lol)
His conversation with Venture especially makes me soft… he sounds encouraging to a human who wants to go to the Shambali monastery.
And of course his interactions with Bastion and Zenyatta are soft and gentle because omnics and knowing Zenyatta from the monastery.
I just- what if I’m his favorite person? What if I’m his exception to his hatred for humans? What if he was contrasted by a soft human? What if he says “Only you,” to his human? What if the hands he used for violence were also used to gently hold a delicate human he loves? uhuguhguhuhgufdgdfhgjdfhgd
I’m being self indulgent here and I say I wanna kiss Null Sector’s leader !!!! I want him to press his forehead to mine!! I want him to dink his mouth on my cheek and I do the same on his cool faceplate! I want him to cradle me with his nemesis hands! I want to hold his face when his faceplate gets cracked and his handsome, intense eye is visible and looking at me like I’m his treasure! ARGHRGHRG

Link choked on his breath when the thought crossed his mind. He couldn't win this fight. He stared at Zelda's blackened face and felt the flame of hope in his heart flicker.

vomits. hang on let me try to get all my repeated thoughts out at once. first time actually speaking to each other in the present day in the entirety of the series and it took 92 chapters. i used to say this was matoba with a look of instinctual hatred which i no longer think but i do love that its an instinctual Reaction that he has to tamp down and that is given beautiful large-real-estate-on-the-page focus and a mirror in natori's.
natori terrified bc he hasnt been around for any of the matoba-natsume interactions that have mostly defanged matoba. but he is the trespasser in this arc so he has to play nice around his ex down the street from their emotionally significant loquat memory he was already thinking about while he panics about his ex trying to kill his teen best friend. and then he [horny redacted] well we'll get to that liveblogging later.
um um what else. they look beautiful here. im gonna throw up.

Nicolas Maiella ramble dump because I love him sm
Wonderful man and actor, if it was his choice he would have never joined the war and instead started a career. But his family was not going to accept his wishes so he had no choice.
He at some point realized that he's been acting all his life, since his parents told him he wasn't allowed to react in some ways and do some things, the repeated "stop acting so disgraceful" when he was only being himself was making him go insane. So at some point he just . decided to fake it, act all his way out
and now he's just . confused. Who was he? Who is he? He feels like he's someone, especially around the ones he loves, like that's the only way his mind can feel safe to stop acting.
Nicolas Is a perfect actor because he masks, he can create his own character by looking at the ones around him but doesn't know who he is
And he just realizes this has been making him feel a little insane during the war.

Trust me, this episode broke my brain for how illogical it was, but Orbot attempting to smear Tails' name was just the cherry on top, even Eggman's not that petty
🥺 Babygirl, I’m just gonna sit in my own corner and play with my bones and archaeology tools and… yep! I’ll pretend it didn’t happen 🥺
That, and I feel bad that this is how she’s introduced. I feel like she was also meant to be in a game and she was quickly released..
Man, I’m sorry for being annoying about this guys. I really am😔

My sea shanty interest was reignited and I was like “:O Boston is a coastal town I can make a sailor oc!!” And promptly remembered Far Harbour exists and so now she is there :)
She left the mainland after nearly destroying the entire commonwealth for her kiddo Eliza. Blew up the Prydwen, Railroad, nearly collapsed the Minutemen, and eventually destroyed the Institute when they created a synth version of her husband and she realized just how much they were manipulating her. She left Eliza with Nick and fucked off North, a good fifty miles past the Nakano residence, where she fixes up an old boat and fishes the days away in solitude. Nick eventually finds her a year or two later and needs her boat to head to far harbour to find Kasumi Nakano, and they get stranded there together cuz a sea monster basically ate her boat :)
Anyway she’s also from Newfoundland and Labrador, got military training from soldiers she helped guide through the Northwest Passage, and commonly goes by “The Lobstermonger” in Far Harbour due to her hiding her identity out of shame for all she’s done. I <3 her I’m sorry
