Getting your ducks in a Row (dp x dc)

"Careful!" Sam hears distantly, her brain too tired to compute much more than walking straight this early in the morning, as she walks down the subway stairs.

Someone's hand lands on her shoulder and that startles her enough to look ahead more attentively where there's a giant crater where the next few steps should be.

"Oh shit," Sam lets out breathlessly.

Is this a subway thing or a Gotham thing she wonders distantly as she turns to thank the saviour of the hour.

"You okay?" says the girl with bright blue hair peering at Sam, concerned.

"Yeah, I'm good," Sam assures her. "Thank you."

"No problem," the girl says with a slight smile that turns wry as she continues. "You new to Gotham?"

"So it is a Gotham thing," Sam confirms with the girl who just huffs a laugh in response, and starts making her way around the crater. Sam follows her carefully.

"What happened?" Sam asks, indicating the crater they're rapidly leaving behind.

"Batman had to beat up Killer Croc last night again."

"You're kidding," Sam deadpans. Look, she knows she's grown up in a ghost-infested city, but ghosts make sense. Men dressed as bats fighting Crocodile lookalikes in the Subway sounds more like a the start of a joke.

"Nope," the girl says, popping the second syllable. "I'm Harper by the way."

"Sam," the goth girl introduces herself. "Anything else I should know about Gotham as a newly arrived citizen?"

Harper almost chokes on a snort.

"Where do I start?"
