Tales of the first Tales of

Couple days ago I watched the end credits of Tales of Phantasia. Game I’ve started several times, but only now finished. I don’t blame past me or anyone else for not playing the game, it was rough at times, but ultimately there was enough good in there too. Definitely I don’t anyway regret the time I put in it. Even though I played the PS1 version, instead of the original release, I feel it was interesting to see the starting point of long running series that’s still going.

Tales of Phantasia is sadly one of those games where battles feel like they take several times longer as they should. Especially in mid-game enemies felt like they had five times as much hp as they should. Things got better later, but lot of the combat became bit tiresome. Which is sad, because I felt the core was fine, some jank, but manageable. And cumbersome combat feeds into other aspects of the game, mainly dungeons. Dungeons in Phantasia has some thought in them, there were mazes and puzzles and puzzly mazes, neat stuff. But when combat feels like chore, it makes exploring these environments a chore too. And not all the dungeons are great, I don’t think all the puzzles land properly, but I still appreciate even the attempt.

Thinking back on the story of Phantasia, I like how it’s the story of the main characters, a group of young heroes who stop the evil demon-army leading warlord Dhaos. But there is also more than that, the story and world is larger than just what main characters are up to, but things game focuses on are just the parts with main characters. Biggest aspect of this is the villain Dhaos. Fairly early on character and party member Arche wonders what is Dhaos’ deal, why he does what he does. And everyone else basically goes “shut up kid, he is evil and needs to be stopped, that’s all.” Not that that’s wrong assessment of him, but it’s obvious there’s is a lot more. And some of it is learned, but not much, there is just implication that there is more to this person called Dhaos, traveller from another world than what characters and thus player learns.

I’m not Tales of expert. Haven’t played that many of them. Overall my feelings towards the series has been; they are fine. I don’t have any nostalgia for the series, nor great love of any kind, but the games are good. I generally enjoy the story, like the characters and tolerate the combat. Tales of Phantasia fits the group well. Sure bit weaker side on all aspects, but it’s the first game in the series, makes sense that things get better with time and experience.

Ok I haven't watched Big hero 6 but I do know things about their relationship.

So as the four got to know, all of them realized they have more in common aside being tech-nerds.

Hiro lost his older brother and Idia lost his younger brother.

i understand escapism, but right now in australia we have a rapidly growing trend of disabled people living in literal tents and fucking up their bodies more because they can't afford mandatory housing and i'm midkey preparing for that to be me when my lease expires, we're almost defnitely going to war and aside from everything that entails im also worrying about whether my friends are going to be put in internment camps and how effective i could be at sheltering them from that, we're in the 4th calendar year of the worst mass disabling event in history so i can't safely leave the house anyway, and we have two seperate systems of immense power doing pretty much everything they can to prevent accountability and preventative measures to stop *checks notes* child rape, and the poorly welded over cracks of my own related trauma are barely holding together at all at the worst time of year for me

I've walked away from opportunities rather than having to make a choice in my personal, professional and lovelife due to to this indecisiveness.This even reflected how I played vidogames. In thousands of hours of skyrim, I not once went with the imperials because if I dont know what im missing then its not that bad. In thousands of hours of Fallout 4, Not once did I fully side with a single faction and eliminated the rest. I fucking hated having to make those kinds of decisions in videogames.I recently picked up the witcher and witcher 2 from the summer sale, because I wanted to experience the full story. What I wasn't ready for, was how the game forces you to make a HUGE decision, which would Drastically impact the next 30 - 50 hours of how you finish the game, as well as the witcher 2 because your save carries over. Now, normally I'd choose the bitch way out and look up in depth guides on what exactly are the consequences, pros and cons of each decision.Not this time though.Because of the pacing of this game, and with the help of a good couple of beers while playing through this section, Over the course of 6 to 10 hours of game time, you are met with MULTIPLE NPCs (scroll to 5:07:17 if it doesnt start there) literally telling you that you have to take a stand and that you cannot keep being indecisive (or in a nicer way "Neutral"). You are forced to take note of what is happening around you. The link I posted was just one of many.Eventually I decided that for once in my life I'm gonna make the choice. Yes, some shit happened that I wasn't expecting that made me go "damn, I chose wrong". But a lot of other stuff happened that was awesome and I would have missed out on if I didn't make this choice. And you know what? I realized that if I were given a third, neutral "Indecisive" option, I would have missed out on both of these awesome paths! Because sometimes you need to make a big decision if you want to see big results. If shit goes your way, great! if it doesn't, it is what it is.I repeat. It is what it is. I've had to make peace with not always being able to control the outcome of things, sometimes that means regret, other times it doesn't. And that's the hardest part I had to learn.If you've made it this far past this wall of text, I thank you for hearing me out. And if you didn't, that's cool too. I just needed to get this out into the world.TLDR: Spent my whole life missing out on opportunities because of my own indecisiveness. In the end, no bold revelation, or even grand epiphany pulled me out of it. But some very basic 16/17 year old videogame.Edit just for fun: As a testament to my indecisiveness, Witcher 1 doesn't overwrite your quicksaves, it created a new one each time. I logged a total of around 1400 quicksaves throughout the whole of witcher 1 enhanced edition. Most of them for freaking dialogue options. The game would come close to lagging out when I tried to load a save, so I had to delete them in batches when they came close to 300. No one in my life plays ffxiv (aside from one discord friend and my static) and the thing about ffxiv is that it is a game that you live in. The plot is endless and you cant just explain to others how and why and what the fuck. Activities are also endless, and its social, and there is always shit to do, prices to flip. Its not a game my family is used to, and it not somethifn mt friends are much interested in either. Which is. Also weird. I may just have trouble with people huh. But im not sure, i usually do come out of social settings with one good buddy. Its just. Yeah. Idk how to properly explain the fact that i am horribly consistent. Im writing for more than ten years at this point. I love the same anime i loved when i was in school. I am constant and the only ever thing that makes me go into new shit are rare manic episodes. I love stability and i like slow and steady so yeah. Im in for a long run for basically everything. Until i get scared enough to avoid it or kicked out. Nothing else will make me quit
