Aaron Rossner (also known as @wingnut_toys on instagram) is an avid toy collector, an amazing artist and tinkerer who lives in Victoria, BC. I haven't had the pleasure of meeting him in person yet, but I've been a fan from afar for many years.

Aaron is a master at recyling funny bits of wood, which you will surely notice if you view any of the figurines this painting is based off of.

1276 - 1492: Cazador Szarr the Avid - Elf - Vampire Lord

I. First, thou shalt not drink of the blood of thinking creatures. II. Second, thou shalt obey me in all things. III. Third, thou shalt not leave my side unless directed. IV. Fourth, thou shalt know that thou art mine.

Note: Kozakuran language (from Kara-Tur) was forbidden for Cazador's Spawns to learn.

Mrel Alkam - Vampire Master of Athkatla

Cazador seems to be in a rivalry with this Vampire Lord, based on the letter you can find in Cazador's Corner.

Cazador's Seven Spawn:

Aurelia - Tiefling

Likely the oldest Spawn, due to being one level higher than the rest if you examine her stats.

Astarion Ancunín - Elf

Astarion states he was one of Cazador's first Spawn. Not the first, but one of the first. This implies there was at least one Spawn created before him.

Former Magistrate in Baldur's Gate.

Born 1261 DR. Turned 1300 DR. Kills Cazador in 1492 DR.

Astarion was 15 years old when Cazador killed Vellioth and took over as the Vampire Master of Baldur's Gate. He was 39 when he became a Spawn. Astarion is 231 during the events of the game and when he kills Cazador. This means he had been a Spawn for 192 years during the game.

Petras refers to Astarion as a "runt" and "the runt of the litter" when you find him and Dalyria while playing the origin Astarion run. This ties into my theory that Astarion, despite being one of Cazador's first Spawn, was deemed the Scapegoat within their vampiric family. This also goes into my other theory that all of the Spawn, to some degree, participated in each other's abuse; be it actively, such as how Petras and Astarion seemed to have a mutually verbally abusive relationship, or passively, by simply not speaking up or trying to show too much fondness for one another, as a means to try and gain greater favor with Cazador.

Violet - Elf

States in her diary that she put garlic in Yousen's bed as a prank because he was a "whining runt", which caused him to break out in a rash.

Unsure if she's older or younger than Yousen, despite refering to him as a runt. Astarion is also referred to as a runt by Petras, though its inferred that Astarion is older than Petras.

Leon worried most about Violet harming Victoria, based on his diary.

Yousen - Gnome

Astarion seems to be racist against Gnomes, based on dialogue suggesting he views gnomes as animals and in how he gives backhanded compliments to a gnome Tav.

In Act 1, after he bites Tav, if you tell him to only drink from animals, he asks: "I mean, elves and humans are obviously out, but goblins? Kobolds? Gnomes?"

Astarion expresses distaste at the idea of saving Nere just for the sake of saving the gnome slaves trapped with him, if Tav talks to him and mentions the idea.

It's unknown if Astarion's dislike and dehumanization of gnomes existed before Yousen became a Spawn or if this developed due to consistent negative interactions with Yousen over their centuries being forced to play brothers. Either way, it's him generalizing and discriminating an entire race, and that should still be recognized as problematic.

Dalyria - Elf

Former Physician General to the Parliament of Baldur's Gate.

Believed that vampirism was some sort of blood disorder that could be cured.

Seems to be close to Petras, or at least close enough to actually have a visceral reaction when Astarion puts Petras in the sunlight. This may be because they're close in age, though its unknown if she or Petras is older of the two.

It could be argued she's fairly young due to the fact that, when you play origin Astarion, she seems to genuinely believe that they're all a family. She's far more vocal about the idea of family, telling Astarion "I can't believe you'd turn on us! On your own family!" if he attempts violence towards Petras. This could potentially showcase her naivety and gullibility of being a younger Spawn not yet fully experienced with the full breadth of Cazador's cruelty or her lack of experience truly competing with the other Spawn for her own self-preservation.

Pale Petras - Human

Around 100 years in age, deduced by his dialogue with Dalyria where he states he's had to feed on rats and dogs for 100 years.

Leon Onufrio - Human

Sorcerer. Based on various journals and notes in the palace, Leon was still able to cast magic; deduced by the fact he cast a spell to protect Victoria so as to make attempting to feed from her unappealing to the other Spawn.

Has been a Spawn at least 6 years.

Was the Favored Spawn for 5 out of the recent 6 years. Violet claimed the spot for one year.

Victoria - Human · Child, Daughter of Leon. · Dalyria's journal claims that Victoria is still "pureblood", implying Victoria is still fully Human and not a Dhampir, hence her wanting to use Victoria's blood as a potential cure. Leon's journal also states that Cazador forced Leon to bring Victoria with him to the palace after Leon had been turned, implying she hadn't been turned. · Cazador weaponized her safety as a method to maintain control over Leon. · If you use Speak with Dead on Victoria's body in the guest room, she claims she was an orphaned child who had been lured by Dalyria before she was killed. · Leon's journal reveals he had been making plans with Figaro to disguise and sneak Victoria out of Cazador's clutches. It can be deduced that he succeed and swapped his daughter with the orphan Dalyria had lured, and somehow enchanted or disguised her to look like Victoria.

Amanita Szarr / Lady Incognita

Cazador's niece who was forcibly turned into a vampire. Her entries claim that Cazador personally summoned her.

Her various entries begin in 1477, when she was 13. Astarion was turned in 1300 DR, so he would have been alive during these events and would have been aged 216. Which means this occurred 15 years before the game.

Wrote a journal detailing that the blood diseases Red Thrombosis and Thandals Paroxsym could give a vampire a brief illness if they ingest infected blood. She also states a vampire could train themselves to recognize infected prey by scent before biting them.

Summary: Harry Potter AU - Corroded Coffin has a chance to play at the Yule Ball, but Eddie would rather take a date

Note: I intended for this to include the ball but I am incapable of writing short and therefore ran out of space lol. Also, I picked Eddie and Nancy for this because they give me a Lily and James Potter kind of vibe. Plus I like Edancy hehe

“Oh, come on,” Gareth whines, flopping onto his back on the grassy hill. 

“Will you take it easy?” Jeff asks.

“No! We have a shot at playing for the whole school. They’ll finally get to see that we’re actually good and stop shitting on us,” Gareth spews.

“You have no idea if that will happen,” Frank says, shoving the sleeves of his jumper up to his elbows. “They could hate us, make everything worse.”

Gareth groans and flings an arm over his eyes, blocking them from the unusually bright winter sun. 

“We do have to figure out if we want to give it a shot or not,” Jeff says, turning his head to look at Eddie.

The oldest boy lays on his back, his red and gold tie contrasting with the dull green grass. His arms are tucked behind his head, and he tilts his chin up to look at his friends.

“It depends,” he says simply.

“On what?” Gareth demands.

“On if the odds are actually in our favor or not,” Eddie says, turning his gaze back to the lake in front of him. “I’m not gonna miss my shot with Wheeler for a fantasy of yours that isn’t going to happen.”

“Like she’d say yes to you, anyway,” Gareth snorts. Jeff reaches over and swats at his shorter friend’s chest—even though he’s thinking the same thing. 

“What do you think, Frank?” Eddie asks, letting his eyes slip closed. “You’re in the same house as her. Think I have a chance?”

Frank dips his chin to look down at his Slytherin tie as if it holds the answers. 

“Uh, I don’t know,” he finally says. “She and I aren’t exactly friends.”

“So, go ask her now and when she says no, you’ll know we can play!” Gareth says. 

Eddie sighs, opening his eyes and pushing himself up on his elbows. 

“What would I do without my supportive best friends?”

“Come on,” Jeff says, slapping Eddie’s thigh. “It’s time for dinner. Let’s make the other Hufflepuffs deal with Gare for a while.”

The four friends approach The Great Hall entrance when Eddie hears a familiar voice behind him. He smirks to himself and leans against a column right outside the doors.

“You guys can go ahead,” Eddie says.

“Are you finally going to ask her?” Gareth asks, the look in his eyes far too excited for Eddie’s liking.

“Just go.” Eddie nods towards the long tables inside. 

Once the guys are out of view, Eddie tries to think what position he should be standing in. What looks coolest? He groans to himself as he crosses his arms over his chest and rests his head back against the cold marble of the column. Debating whether or not it would make him look more or less casual, Eddie bends his right knee and plants his foot against the column as well. Then he takes it down. Then he puts it back up. And now it’s too late to change it.

Nancy and Barb walk around the corner and the corners of Eddie’s mouth turn up in a smile. 

“Hey, Nancy. Hey, Barb.”

“Hi, Eddie,” they say at the same time.

“Uh listen, Wheeler,” Eddie says, pushing himself off the column. 

Nancy slows in front of him and nods to Barb that she can head inside The Great Hall.

“What’s up?” Nancy asks once it’s just the two of them. There’s a soft smile on her face that makes Eddie’s tummy buzz pleasantly. 

Up to this point, Eddie had been all confidence and charm. But now that it’s time to actually ask out the girl he likes, he’s unsure of himself. 

“I, uh, was wondering if maybe you’d want to go to the Yule Ball with me?” he asks, one hand nervously rubbing at the back of his neck. 

“Oh.” With the one word, Nancy’s face drops—and so does Eddie’s heart. “I’m sorry, I’m already going with Billy. He asked me yesterday.”

“Oh,” Eddie echoes, unable to keep the disappointment out of his voice. “Well, I, um, I hope you have fun.”

“Thanks,” Nancy says. Eddie has a hard time looking her in the eye, or he would see that she genuinely was sorry. “Maybe we can do something next weekend.”

“Sure,” Eddie says, a forced smile on his face. He doesn’t think she really means it; she’s just too nice for flat out rejection. 

Nancy gives him one last look before heading into The Great Hall. 

Once he’s alone, Eddie slaps a hand against the column he had been leaning against. He no longer felt hungry. Instead of heading into the hall, Eddie turns around and walks down the empty corridor, not caring where it leads him. 

“Thanks, man.” Jeff pats Lucas on the back as he holds open the portrait of The Fat Lady so the three non-Gryffindor Corroded Coffin members can step into the common room. 

“No problem,” Lucas says. He points towards the couch nearest the fireplace. “He’s over there.”

And there Eddie is. Lying face down on the worn, plaid couch. 

“I’m guessing she said no,” Frank muses. 

A muttered groan is Eddie’s only confirmation. 

“Cheer up, man,” Gareth says, perching himself on the arm of the tattered couch. “Good news is we’re playing the ball. Higgins agreed and everything.”

That makes Eddie lift his head and look up at his friend.

“What? When?”

Gareth shrugs. “Yesterday. But I was waiting for Nancy to turn you down.”

“Dude,” Jeff chastises. 

Eddie doesn’t even care about the slight. He just lowers his head back down. 

“Wait, Nancy turned you down?” Mike asks as he descends the spiral staircase that leads to the rooms. When Eddie nods against the cushion, Mike continues. “That doesn’t make sense. This morning, I heard her tell Barb she didn’t want to go to the ball with Billy; she wants to go with you.”

Eddie is off of the couch in a heartbeat, gripping Mike by the tie. 

“She said what?”

inspired by this post and fleshed out in @majestictortoise's DMs, but warehouse AU where Kim and Chay don't quite clear the warehouse before Tawan blows it. maybe Kim was sticking close to the edge of the building for cover, maybe he wasn't ready to hand Chay over to his father's men, maybe Tawan blew the building early--idk, not important! all that matters is: Kim and Chay are far enough away they don't get hurt by the blast itself, but close enough a chunk of the building or debris can fall over their head.

naturally, Kim shields Chay. gets hurt.

and THAT's when Chay wakes up.

now, they don't stay trapped for long. they're the first two people Porsche and Kinn look for after they brush off the clothes embers, and their brothers are FRANTIC to find them. they find them quickly, but not before Kim gets Chay frantically patting him down to check if he's alright (he's not) and asking him a thousand questions (what he's actually worried about). the only questions answered are "where are we?" and Chay's "do you hearing ringing? my ears are still ringing" (cue Kim frantically checking his head, which Chay very much likes but also P'Kim, you're bleeding, P'Kim!). there are 998 unanswered and unresolved questions still waiting when their brothers uncovered them, then Chay's scooped up into Porsche's arms and Kim's scooped up into Kinn's, and Kim's OVERWHELMED by brother's affection but also pretty pissed Kinn's bullshit hurt Chay and he just told Kinn that instead of thank you for coming like he'd meant to say but he doesn't know how to tell him that NOW--

listen, Kim's house of cards lies in shambles, he's dealing with approximately 300x his usual gamut of emotions, Kinn manages to wrangle him into the hospital and knows not to leave him alone until the nurses have finished stitching him up, but then Kim sneaks out in the time it takes Kinn to turn his head long enough to thank the nurses (the nerve of that boy!).

meanwhile, the rest of them are putting out literal fires and cleaning up rubble and trying to figure out how the fuck they're going to bury this bullshit, but all of that is secondary because Chay Has Questions. some of which Porsche genuinely can't answer ("WIK is MAFIA?!") and most of which Porsche doesn't want to answer ("why are YOU mafia hia!!"). Porsche is very uncomfortable, up until Chay learns Kim is missing from the hospital and he gets distracted worrying over him.

which. Kim running away when Chay has firm proof he cares and knows where he lives? genius plan Kim.

and Kim thinks his brothers are going to leave him alone after a building fell on him?

Kim. kid. kiddo. baby boy. you are supposed to be smarter than this.

hello!! i've been checking out your save file and while looking at Oasis Springs i ran into an issue: i get an infinite loading screen when i try to load 998 Prospect St. :( i'm not sure what the issue is as all the other lots i tried work perfectly but thought i should let you know!

Thanks for the ask (or better yet, notice lol). Im sorry to hear you’re having issues. I took a look at both versions, and I didn’t come across this issue (when loading from map view nor when entering from live mode).

I don’t really know what to suggest to you, but you could try to replace the lot? I have it on my gallery (coolpuppy12) and it’s called “A Mini Modern”. If that doesn’t work, maybe it’s a bug or mod issue?

Also, if anyone else notices any issues, please let me know! I’m currently working on a quality update for Ver. 1

"The Strange Story of Jonathan Small," part 12 of The Sign of the Four in Letters from Watson, is indeed strange. The truth turns out much more convoluted than the Moonstone-esque "stolen from a temple" explanation I'd been expecting... but still manages to reflect badly on everyone involved.

First, though, there's the small matter of the policeman waiting for Watson in the cab. I'm utterly confused by giving an "inspector" this babysitting duty, since that should be a managerial rank; and the rank did exist in 1890. But that could be my misunderstanding of some change in nomenclature. The real issue is this:

His face clouded over when I showed him the empty box. “There goes the reward!” said he, gloomily. “Where there is no money there is no pay. This night's work would have been worth a tenner each to Sam Brown and me if the treasure had been there.”

How bad is pay if a member of the Metropolitan Police is working for tips?

According to the Friends of the Metropolitan Police Heritage Charity, typical pay in 1890 was 25-35 shillings a week. (This source also provides other juicy tidbits, like the first official rules on handling a murder scene were set as recently as 1879, which explains why so many detectives at Holmes' crime scenes were sloppy about crime scene contamination. And the first Thames Police steam launch was floated in 1885!)

The midpoint of 30 shillings means about USD 266 a week in today's money, or an annual salary in today's USD of $13,832. The current poverty line for a single person is $15,060. Even as approximations, these point to policing not being a well-paid job.

And then we get the story of Jonathan Small.

Small is from Pershore, a village left being by Worcestershire's industrialization and losing population. His "chapel-going" family means he was raised as a Nonconformist: Protestant but not Anglican, most likely Presbyterian or Methodist. By the time of Small's youth in the middle of the 19th century, most civil rights had been restored to Nonconformists, though his family would have been taxed to pay for the Anglican parish church, and he could not have enrolled at Oxford.

The latter seems not to have been an aspiration, since Small was, by his own account, "a bit of a rover." He didn't seek employment in the carpet mills or glove factories -- where, in the usual Victorian manner, conditions were dreadful for most laborers. (Revolutionary Players does a terrific slideshow on the Kidderminster carpet mills.) His "spot of trouble over a girl" would likely have been getting a local young woman pregnant, or perhaps raping a young woman. The subsequent crocodile incident confirms he was a heedless fool, but nothing thereafter rules out being worse than that.

(I'm not dealing with the 3rd Buffs because I understand nothing of Victorian UK Army divisions.)

Small lands on his feet (well, foot) by being hired by The Man With the Most Overtly Racist Name, Mr. Abelwhite, as overseer on an indigo plantation.

The demand for indigo in the 19th century is indicated by the fact that in 1897, 7,000 km2 (2,700 sq mi) were dedicated to the cultivation of indican-producing plants, mainly in India. By comparison, the country of Luxembourg is 2,586 km2 (998 sq mi).

Indigo was grown on plantations, farmed by slave or near-slave labor, so yep, Jonathan Small is a slave overseer.

Then comes the 1857 Rebellion. A good ThoughtCo piece explains:

The Sepoy Mutiny was a violent and very bloody uprising against British rule in India in 1857. It is also known by other names: the Indian Mutiny, the Indian Rebellion of 1857, or the Indian Revolt of 1857. In Britain and in the West, it was almost always portrayed as a series of unreasonable and bloodthirsty uprisings spurred by falsehoods about religious insensitivity. In India, it has been viewed quite differently. The events of 1857 have been considered the first outbreak of an independence movement against British rule. The uprising was put down, but the methods employed by the British were so harsh that many in the western world were offended.

The piece goes on to detail the ample reasons that Indians would want to rebel against the occupying UK Army and the British East India Company. The uprising itself was incredibly bloody -- possibly the only thing I recall about Flashman in the Great Game is the graphic descriptions of the carnage, which is not what one reads the Flashman novels for.

Caught up in the fighting, Small ends up at the Agra's Red Fort, which was completed in this form in 1573. The British captured it in 1803. It is enormous -- 94 acres -- and designed to defend from, among other things, battering down the gates with elephants.

This was a real battle site in the 1857 Rebellion... and so here is Small, assigned to guard duty with two Sikhs, who are somehow loyal to the colonizing force.

Many Sikh were loyal soldiers for Great Britain, to the point that Sikhs were popularly idolized as the perfect soldiers. This excerpt from Faithful Fighters, by Kate Imy, gives a sense of how thoroughly British imagination defined Sikhs as loyal soldiers, and how this was problematic on so many dimensions. It's also generally agreed that Britain could not have quashed the 1857 Rebellion without Sikh soldiers.

From this point, everybody becomes driven by greed and pride, including the unfortunate Major Morstan, father of Mary. The only exception in this general degradation of spirit is, surprisingly, Tonga! Being loyal-unto-death to the white man who saved his life is absolutely a trope ascribed to "primitive" peoples, but it's also nobler than anything anyone else does at this stage in the story. (Admittedly, Small tries to be loyal to his Sikh co-conspirators in his original plans for escape, but he's so damn stupid that his loyalty is worthless. He also treats Tonga no better than he would a monkey.)

And so the story winds down, and Watson drops the bombshell that he's engaged to Miss Morstan. Holmes' response raises what I'm sure are false hopes:

I think she is one of the most charming young ladies I ever met, and might have been most useful in such work as we have been doing. She had a decided genius that way: witness the way in which she preserved that Agra plan from all the other papers of her father.

Yes! Include Miss Morstan in your adventures! She is sensible and organized!

I feel in my bones that nothing of the sort will happen. But in a few decades, Dorothy Sayers will devote Gaudy Night to exploring Holmes' claim that love has a bad effect on reason.

Meanwhile, we still don't know what Watson was sending at the post office, back at the beginning.

My #1 post of 2022

Seeing more and more blogs without a [username].tumblr.com site which means you can only view their blogs in tumblr.com/[username] mode, and I realized just the other day that nowadays you have to manually go to your blog settings and toggle the "enable custom theme" switch to have a browser site activated.

I REALLY recommend activating this! Especially if you're an artist or if you have a themed blog, like if you reblog fanart for a specific fandom or ship. First and foremostly you can change the whole theme if you want to, you can really just go wild with building your personal aesthetic for your page.
