The making of my Vortigaunt plush
Hi! I'm Silas and I frickin love vortigaunts. They're my favourite Half-Life alien :3
Yeah so there are vintage Vort plushies you can buy off like,,,, eBay n shit but they're all around £400-£500 and buddy. I am an unemployed college student. I cannot afford that. SO! I made my own >:3
This is Jeremy the Vort :> (Named by my Grandma BC she couldn't pronounce the word Vortigaunt) h is very silly and looks at me like a borzoi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Patterning:
Right off the bat, Jer is made from my own modified version of this pattern
Tumblr media
The Face, Arms and Legs:
These were kinda tricky to make but I eventually figured it out :D (At this stage, their face will look quite scrompled lol)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Body:
Before sewing the body patten together, I attached the third arm through a slit made in the chest piece then stitched the parts together.
After stitching up the body (excluding the seam beneath the legs) and turning it the right way out, I thoroughly stuffed the head and body with an ungodly amount of cotton from college before stitching up the open seam.
i chose to shape the third arm last since it seemed, and turned out, easier.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Final Touches (Aka: Woe, Vortigaunt Be Upon Ye):
The teeth and eyes were the last thing I detailed. I just gently dabbed the eyes with red fabric paint while using an old, crusty paintbrush.
For the teeth, I stitched a freehand pattern with my sewing machine before cutting it out and sewing it under the 'mouth' seam with the teeth seam facing inwards so it was hidden.
Tumblr media
So yea! This has been my silly little HL project I've been working on! I'm planning to make another one of my Vort, Void but for now we must wait :>

Love Etsy, hate Etsy sellers
This appears to be a lovely listing for how to make underwear from a vintage pattern book that you can purchase quite affordably on Etsy:
How nice!
Except that it's basically taken from the Antique Pattern Library, which provides these patterns for free for personal, non-commercial use:
Of course, Etsy makes money from this theft, so you can't report it. Only the Antique Pattern Library can. And I don't even want to guess the number of hoops an IP owner must jump through to convince Etsy to stop making money.
So, yeah. Etsy is great! But a lot of Etsy sellers are scumbags.

I made a thing
If you're into crochet youtube, you may have seen the mystery crochet pattern videos that Just Vintage Crochet is making. It seems like a fun thing to do, but not everyone has someone willing to go through a number of old patterns and black out the info. So I thought : "why not make some, list them at a very low price on Etsy, so random people can try one out?"
Long story short, Etsy doesn't want my money. So I have 10 perfectly good mystery knitting/crochet patterns sitting on my hard drive, and that's stupid. So I put them all on Google Drive, and you can download them here (for free, since I don't have listings to pay for anymore).
Each of them has the blacked-out pattern in PNG and a typed PDF, and a stitch guide if one was in the book. The reveal zip file has the normal PNG pattern, the title page of the original book (they all come from archive.org) and pictures if some were included in the book. I used a random number generator to choose the patterns so they are all over the place.
So yeah, here you are. Make a youtube video. Make it a challenge with your friends. Don't sell them, that would be rude. If you make a video, send me the link, I'd love to see that.

hey! fellow aussie here and I just discovered your blog while looking for vintage patterns and was wondering if you were uploading the sewing patterns or just compiling the pattern envelopes in the google drive?
Short answer: yes, some of them, eventually.
Longer answer: digitizing patterns without any proper equipment requires a little bit more space than I have right now to do it efficiently. I don't have access to the kinds of tools that would traditionally be used for this kind of thing, so instead I do it by photographing the patterns sandwiched between a clear sheet with a five centimeter/2 inch grid overlaid, that I use to correct the distortion of the photos in Photoshop. From that point it can either be copied by hand onto drafting paper using the squares, or if it's something particularly cool, I can trace the outlines in illustrator to make basically one big printable PDF.
But to do this I need space for a very big piece of either clear acrylic, or some other kind of semi-rigid plastic that can have the grid on it, as well as a support material to keep it flat, and most importantly, somewhere to prop it up where I can take a photo of it straight-on and from a sufficient distance away that there's not too much lens distortion or light glare from the plastic. Unfortunately, right now my very small city apartment isn't really configured for it, and I'm using basically a big-ish piece of cardboard and a thin sheet of plastic with tape lines, so the images take a prohibitively long time to make usable.
I've bookmarked the big sheets of acrylic I want to buy to make the process easier, but I don't really have the space for them just now.

See my vest! See my vest! It fits across my chest! The buttons are true vintage And I'm proud about the rest!
The green is pure The yarn's superb The inserts are secure Try the shell stitch, it's delicious! When you seam it, use a slipstich!
Oh, it sings Oh, it's dense After all, bitch, this is fierce And a good worsted is never second best!
Okay, that's as far as I can take before it gets really hard to make something hit the same stressor as "menu". Anyway, a very cute piece that I am thrilled to have done. The inserts are hard to see, but they shaped up perfectly. I've got a 33" waist, and the pattern expected a 29". So, I made 2 inserts in pattern stitch, both two inches wide and seamed them to the back before seaming the fronts to the inserts.
Gonna add a couple rows of single crochet at the bottom, as I need it want it just a smidge longer on the torso.
BTW, you'll be working a worsted weight (This is hobbii Metallaco) on a 3.5 mm hook, but you need 3 stitches (a sc, a shell, and a sc) to hit an inch, so prepare to let your hands relax.
Pattern is buyable here. It's a PDF of the original pattern from the 1940s, and there's some definite OCR issues with some of the spelling. Nothing unworkable, but if you find yourself with a question, I'm happy to help.
There's also errata for the Large size (the size I needed). I can't say if the other sizes need correction as well, but if they do, it'll likely be in a similar way to what's here:
Decorations: Stitch buttons (to correspond to holes) on right center front.
CORRECTION: Buttons should be placed on left center front, as buttonholes are created on right.
Large Size, Both Front Panels: Row 24: Ch 1, sl st 13 sts… CORRECTION: Ch 1, sl st 16 stitches…
Row 41: …5 dc in next sc st, 1 sc over ch 1, 5 dc in next sc st, 1 sc over ch 4, tie off. CORRECTION: 5 dc in next sc st, 1 sc over ch 4, tie off.
Back Shaping: When repeating pattern rows after Row 26, do continue to add slip stitches on odd-numbered rows. Instead, begin with a sc over the previous row Ch 4 as you did for the front panels.
(I also keep a list of Vintage Pattern Errata on my website; and these errors are now noted there.)

Your hair is so beautiful! Also, may I ask, where do you get your dresses?
Thank you!!
I mostly get them from vintage stores or make them myself, and occasionally just regular shops will sell a few I like then I accessories and/or add alterations. I know where I got most of them so if you are interested in a particular one I could probably tell you where to buy it/send you a pdf of the pattern I used ☺️

do you have any good online (or not!) resources about finishing / framing / hanging etc weavings? i've been weaving for over ten years and i've literally never been satisfied with anything i make once it's off the loom. like what am i supposed to do with this (other than cutting it up and sewing it into something obv)
also sidenote am i missing something or is that amazing antique pattern library just fully missing weaving patterns??
here are a few articles and pdfs on the subject!
handwoven article on finishing that links to several articles on finishing techniques below the article (I would also recommend searching handwovens website/archives for more info, I think they have a pdf somewhere on this)
6 ways to hang a weave
textile mounting techniques from the northeast feltmakers guild
top tips for mounting textile work
yeah unfortunately the antique pattern library doesn't have them (unless i've also completely missed them??) But there are two other major online resources for antique weaving patterns and books that i use extensively:
handweaving.net weaving archive
arizona state online weaving archive (I find this website easier to navigate)
you can also find copies of antique/vintage weaving manuscripts and patterns on archive.org

I don’t think they would have shut my internet service off for being just one month overdue but it hasn’t been working since 8:30 this morning. But whatever I have my silly little iPad with ok service in my apartment and my phone with like perpetually one bar and a couple games and movies I can access offline. And like 250 books to read between my nook and PDFs so I’ll be ok. And I can draw. So that’s where I’m at.
Went to goodwill earlier before the grocery store, I wish I could try clothes on but I still can’t so I didn’t buy pants. I think that’s why I keep not getting them because there were a few cute pairs of nice quality this time but I just couldn’t tell if they’d be too small. But I got a beautiful red Talbots 3/4 sleeve embroidered top embroidered with a large white viney floral pattern it fits perfectly but it’s kind of fancy looking for everyday. And a vintage linen plaid lightweight button up with cuffed short sleeves and a collar I can’t button it fully bc boob opening so I gotta do the tank top underneath open shirt situation so it makes me look very gay but it’s good.
Annnddd I got a basket with a handmade cover shaped like a chicken that you can lift up the wings and there’s holes to put your hand in to access contents of said basket. Naturally I’m using this for weed purposes, basically all shared loose items (personal smoke filter, grinder, lighter) are now safe organized and smell-less (-less suffix used, for example, as in stainless steel, as the steel stains less, so do my items smell less). Ummm I’m gonna take pics later.
Oh and I got a carhartt khaki cropped jacket with chunkier sleeves and like cargo pockets it’s so cute. All for under $15 and the coffee place I went to messed my drink up barely so I got both the messed up one and better one for free. So that’s why I won’t shut up I think
