Basil of Baker Street
A four part blog post series by Mike Peraza, the art director of The Great Mouse Detective. The original sources can be found here: 1. 2. 3. 4.
Part 1:
Tumblr media
"The Black Cauldron" was to be a return of greatness for Disney Feature animation. There was a lot of fresh new talent alongside veteran Disney artists to bring it to the screen. Somewhere along the way as it slowly creeped through production, I just found it difficult to get excited about the direction Cauldron was taking. I wasn't as thrilled about it as I had been when I first saw Mel Shaw's dramatic pastels for the film. He had captured a tale of sweeping adventure and fantasy in brilliant colors. For me, that excitement had been watered down. I wasn't alone. There were others too who wanted to work on something else. That something else became, "Basil of Baker Street."
Tumblr media
Mel Shaw had also been sketching pastels for a new film with the working title, "Basil of Baker Street." Among the early participants were  Directors, Burny Mattinson, John Musker, Ron Clements, Dave Michener, animator/character designer Ed Gombert and storyman Vance Gerry and Don Griffith and I doing concepts. Don Griffith provided some excellent visuals for the Dancehall/Waterfront dive area and I likewise did my best to keep up with my mentor doing the flat, lab, and toyshop. The group was dynamic to say the least. Burny could make these gorgeous charcoal story sketches with lots of appeal and he was an upbeat person to be around. I knew John from Cal Arts days and he was a mark above most even back then with a satirically sharp edge on his drawings. Ron had heart, plenty of it and really studied film techniques as in the 3 C's. Dave was a true veteran of Disney, working close with Milt Kahl for years, and his draughtsmanship was impeccable. Ed was a keen talent in many areas whether designing a character or executing a story sketch and I enjoyed his offbeat humor. Vance was just an easy going mellow soul who was fun to talk to and he could knock out beautiful expressive story panels that nailed each moment in the story arc.
One of two desks I used simultaneously during Basil.
Here I'm working out the staging outside the toyshop
Tumblr media
The story was based on a series of children's books by Eve Titus where a mouse fashioned after London's greatest detective lives just beneath that famous 221B Baker street address. His archenemy is Professor Ratigan, a nod to Professor Moriarty from the Sherlock Holmes world. At one point the little girl, Olivia, was older and a possible love interest for Basil but it was deicided a small girl searching for her father would gain more feeling between our leads in the story dynamic. Basil also plays the violin quite well in our movie whereas in the books he's horrible with the instrument. Basil was named in honor of Basil Rathbone who played the detective role famously for MGM and Universal studios for many years.
Ken Anderson had done a marvelous workbook for "Ben and Me", and I was using copies of those as a guide to workbooking for Basil. The productions hadn't been using workbooks in their planning for many years. I'm guessing because the older crew with icons like Don Griffith and Mac Stewart and others had gained so much experience that they could just go from story sketch to layout with a minimum of problems. Well I wasn't as experienced or comfortable doing that so I liked relying on workbooks to aid in the staging process. I did all my thumbnails and even full size layouts in charcoal, sometimes using a carbon pencil for tight detail line work. I also made what I called "Color Ribbons" in small thumbnails to show the progression of color which is so important to setting mood and having an emotional impact. I got that idea from Fantasia, where they had these great little charts showing the abstract color in a sequence and how it would flow through the story. These were then set using workable fixative.
A rather messy corner of my room at the old Disney Studio
In those days we were still in the original animation building where they had done everything from Pinocchio onward and thank goodness the windows could be opened. This way I wasn't asphyxiating myself or my crewmates although that fixative odor could really linger. John Musker would routinely enter my room and ham up his gagging when he heard me spraying. HA, HA, HA, what a card, sheesh, hey I had to do something to make that stuff quit rubbing off! The sequences I was mainly responsible for designing were the opening title, Basil's flat (Basil's introduction), the Toyshop and the climactic fight (chase across sky onto and into Big Ben). Gil Dicicco who was also an Art Director on Basil for a while and did Ratigan's Lair along with the final waterfront look with marvelous watercolor studies. He introduced me to using FW Inks which gave you these brilliant colors and had an excellent permanence in light. Sadly the FW formula changed from carbon to acrylic about 10 years ago and the colors are milky these days. Brian Mcentee did Mr. Sherlock Holmes' flat upstairs and exterior streets of London with wonderful pastels. He did a series of those pastels set in the early morning just after my toyshop chase as Basil, Olivia and Dawson trot homeward on the back of bloodhound Toby while the lamplighter douses the gaslights one by one. Henry Mancini set music to them based on Big Ben's bell chimes and the total effect which brought tears to your eyes. It had the potential of, "Feed the Birds" from "Mary Poppins", to my mind. Unfortunately it was cut. It's a shame because the pacing gave us a heartfelt piece of emotion and a breather between two chase sequences and I really thought that helped the overall pacing.
Part 2:

It was a joy to arrive at work in the morning at Disney in those days. It was like a second home to most of us and we enjoyed the comradery of good friends who were all working towards creating something special. My wife Patty was an effects animator on the film (just off her duties on Cauldron) and created things from exploding feather pillows, menacing shadows to soap bubbles for Basil.
She was the first female to make full animator at Disney since Retta Scott in the early 1940's. Joan Lunden from Good Morning America flew out to the Disney Animation where she interviewed Patty from her office in the animation building. It was great working on the same production because we both were understanding when the other had to work late on a scene or two to get it out for the production. Rob Minkoff, future director of "Lion King" was new to the animation department and would hang out in the corner of my room releasing a constant stream of doodles of Basil, Dawson and other character designs. His designs would be combined with those of others like Matt O"Callahan, Glen Keane and many others. In animation, there is always quite a few people contributing to the final result through a lot of stages. Then of course you don't truly know if the design works until the animator breathes life into the form with his stack of drawings and with the added element of the voice. Bruce Morris was another Cal Arts alumni who was excellent in multiple areas, one of which was story development. He fleshed out Basil's motives and also came up with a Victorian twist to an elaborate mouse trap that would put Rube Goldberg to shame. The crew list could go on and on and I apologize for omitting anyone but I fear this will never get posted if I don't draw a line somewhere.
A few of the endless designs and angles I did as concept art for Basil's flat
On Basil we employed the old unit system which had a director set up with his own little team within a team. I was thrilled to be in John's unit as I thought he had the most exciting sections in the film but everyone pitched in ideas or sketches to help the entire creative process. One of his sequences I was assigned to early on was the climactic fight on Big Ben. I had known of Hayao Miyazaki's "Castle of Cagliostro" and had copies of his storyboard and concepts. I was very impressed with his staging and idea of placing the characters amidst giant turing gears. When John Lasseter brought that film among others to show in the Disney theater I was really blown away seeing it on the big screen so when I read about the clock tower in the script, my imagination went into overdrive. At the time the original script called for the fight between Basil and Ratigan to take place on the hands of Big Ben until Ratigan falls to his demise but I wanted something more. I've always been a fan of big finales using interesting locales a prime example being Alfred Hitchcock's, "North by Northwest" on the gigantic and potentially dangerous faces of Mount Rushmore. I went into John Musker's office, and told John I had a new idea for the climax. Knowing John I expected a devastating but witty retort but instead he listened as I explained my idea of having the fight break through the face of Big Ben and continue inside amidst the menacing gears as a sort of homage to the Miyazaki film. John liked the idea and told me to develop it. Now all I needed was a way to make it all come together.
Tumblr media
Dave English and I met while I was creating some multiplane shots using his Academy Award winning computerized rig called ACES for Epcot and Walt Disney World. Unlike the old multiplane, we could repeat camera moves using the computer system which gave us more flexibility with layering. It was also set up like our old horizontal multiplane as opposed to the vertical one which gave us more room for trucking into the scenes. With his rig I created visuals that were later combined with audio-animatronic figures for the parks. I told him about Basil and my hopes for a computer sequence and he introduced me to a fellow at WED, Lem Davis. I would go over after hours (without permission) and we put together plot drawings of computer graphic settings for the gears turning and the chess board sequence. I chose those two setups because they were made up of simple (or so I thought) geometric shapes that we could easily reproduce in the new digital format. In those days, the computer systems didn't use a mouse and everything was input using a keyboard. Yeah, not easy. For the gears I had to get mechanical drawing made over in the machine shop on the backlot that would then be input point by point into the system. Did I mention that the system liked to crash? It did, frequently especially with the heat those machines built up. I took the colored line plots and sent them to our camera department to be shot with my animation poses exposed on top. After seeing the clips, John and Ron were enthusiastic over the possibilities. However the producer felt it might not fit into the look and it was dropped. Now I didn't agree with the decision but you have to understand that at the time it was a radical new concept and if not handled properly could indeed have stopped the visual flow so I understood his point of view.
A corner of my old office at the Disney Studio
(This photo courtesy of the company newsletter)
I pinned the pastels and charcoals I had done next to the plotted line drawings and they were forgotten, for a while. At least until a visitor came in one afternoon, Roy Disney. He was showing Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg around the studio and came in to see what was up in our wing. During the tour, Roy was looking over my corner intensely and smiled, "Glad to see we're putting some computer images into the mix." After they left, I was given the go ahead to put the computer graphics into production. I remember John Musker's grin as he left the room was almost as big as mine.

My wife and I made hurried plans for a trip to London to gather reference for the film.We contacted Eva Redfern who managed the Disney Studio in our London branch and she worked tirelessly to set up the things we requested. Paramount to our quest for reference was a trip inside Big Ben itself. Security was and probably still is very tight around Big Ben as it is not only a famous London landmark but is considered part of the Palace of Westminister. We took our video equipment up those steps into the bell chamber. In those days, video equipment was heavy and in multiple pieces (camera and recording deck). After trudging up never ending sets of stairs, we found ourselves literally standing behind the huge face of Big Ben's milky white glass face.
Tumblr media
A reference shot I took just behind the huge white clock faces of Big Ben
When the unseen bells were struck by the hammers above us, the tower actually vibrated with the sound. After that treat we then crawled up and lifted a sort of trap door with a pillow on top and found ourselves face to face within the bell chamber including the big one, BIG BEN. While being up in the bell chamber, we only had about 10 minutes to snap pictures and run video before the bells would chime on the quarter hour. Being close to noon, we knew we were in for some real ear splitting harmony and the ear muffs were very welcome. We spent the afternoon going inside, outside and around the structure until we were sure we had plenty of reference material of the tower for my needs as well as the crew back home.
We must have been quite a sight to the British as I was perpetually lying down on the ground trying to get Basil's 6 inch high POV of London with my Nikon lens. We performed the same antics in front of Buckingham Palace,Tower Bridge and everywhere else that our brave intrepid little mouse might travel. Patty and I spent a late night in the East End of London because at that time it was filled with dilapidated buidings bordering the waterfront dating back to the Victorian age and beyond which was perfect for the Ratigan section. When the tube stopped off in Whitechapel, Patty and I were the only ones to step off into a deserted station. During our quest we also crossed the footsteps of Jack the Ripper while taking our photos. We became uneasy as we realized that we were alone in a deadend rundown section of cobblestone. The cabs didn't come to this part of town so we starting walking to the nearest tube which wasn't as close as we were hoping. As our imaginations kicked in, our pace got quicker until we eventually found ourselves safe and warm in our B&B back in Kensington Gardens. We hit Toystores while in London and brought back a collection of wind up tin toys and Victorian styled dolls that would make your hair stand on end. I made a corner of my room at Disney into a sort of turn of the century toyshop complete with fake iron window mullions made of balsa and cardboard.
Tumblr media
One of the hundreds of photos I took laying on the ground to get a "mouse's point of view"
We also searched for the home of London's most famous detective. Although the 221 B Baker Street address of Sherlock Holmes didn't exist when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote the adventure, we were able to find the Shelock Holmes Museum which is situated in a 1815 house similar to the one described in the stories. We also spent the afternoon in the Sherlock Holmes Pub which featured an extremely detailed replica of Mr. Holmes' apartment along with his collection of oddities. Don Griffith and Vance Gerry had both tipped me off about this place and I was glad they did.
Tumblr media
A rough pastel concept for Basil's domicile
The basic structure for Basil's flat came from underneath my house. I crawled under my bathroom to take shot photos of the plumbing and wood/concrete construction. The sewer pipe was a wonderful device to set into the ceiling for proportion. Items like that gave it the identity of an area UNDERNEATH another living quarters and not just a miniature Holmes flat. I kept the large nails and wood grain which enhanced the scale and turned a piece of short pipe into a framed window.
Ken Anderson had built a mill model for Walt Disney's classic 1937 Silly Symphonies, "The Old Mill ,"with detailed movable parts before production on that Academy Award winning short for those reasons. It was invaluable to many departments especially layout and story in planning unique angles and lighting patterns. With Walt's encouragement he went on to build a model set of Snow White's cottage for the next film also with great visual results.
After sketching out the layout of Basil's flat I built a fairly detailed model of it that could be viewed from all directions. I even sculpted small posable figures of Basil and Dawson to scale to place into the set. This technique of building small set models had been done at the Disney Studio since before Snow White as an aid to directors, layout, BG artists and animators in visualizing scene settings.

First time director gives Vincent (Ratigan) Price the background of his character at the recording session.
Vincent Price was perfect as the vocal embodiment of nefarious villian, RATIGAN!  Or as his character would remark, "... an extremely large mouse!" I usually didn't attend voice recording sessions because I really liked having only the audio in my mind when testing for new characters, unblemished by the live session although the expressions and physical traits could be helpful at times to study if we choose that person to provide the voice. You wouldn't believe the physical theatrics I've seen when someone was trying out for a role waving their arms, making faces and jumping around instead of concentrating on their vocal acting. A few times after such a session a director would be excited after what he thought was a great recording test only to find the rest of us who hadn't attended the recording less than enthused because we were able to concentrate solely on the voice. My other excuse was that I was usually swamped with work. When Vincent Price came in though, well that was different. As we all knew who he was mainly due to his horror themed later films and the booth was packed with most of our small crew. John Musker was directing the recording on the floor with Vincent Price when he asked for the same take one too many times.  We were dying in the booth, laughing and I'm sure John thought it was funny in time too.

Me and my pal "Big Ben"
Tumblr media
We had a lot of fun in those days at Disney. John instigated the first of many Caricature Shows in the studio library where his wife Gail worked. Everyone at the studio was invited to contribute and most of us did.  At Halloween, the animation staff would wear their finest and strangest mostly homemade costumes. I'll have to post some of those around October.  And any Disney animation artist worth their salt could flip a pushpin into a facing wall or ceiling and hit the spot. It was a benefit of long hours of having so much ready ammunition around. We became adept with whipping out those tiny terrors of pintacular precision.
Sometimes we used the wall, other times the ceiling. We could toss them with a curve or slight rise, like a baseball player on the mound pitching to a heavy hitter. On Basil we took it up a notch. We used to make blowguns out of pan cels and shoot special darts which were our solid lead pushpins from the 1930's and 1940's. We could hit the target from one end of the hall to the other. The pins hit so hard that when we pulled the softer lead, the steel points stayed in the back side of the closed door. Wonder what they thought after the animation staff left to relocate to Glendale? Must have looked liked a metal porcupine had farted cold steel quills!  Tons of silly sketches flew back and forth among artists during production a lot of which I kept copies of thankfully. A funny gag drawing could make a long day seem a lot shorter. A prop I had brought in for the Toyshop sequence was an old hand crank bubble machine I had picked up in an antique store in London.  I put it to good use when Musker had to leave his office across the hall to attend a meeting one afternoon. I had found some "Super-Duper Long Lasting Bubble Liquid"  for the fuel but when John returned, there were bubbles over his desk, moviola, floor, everywhere. Those bubbles just stayed, and stayed! Luckily when they finally went away they didn't leave behind any damage, only that springtime fresh clean smell, ahhh.
Our favorite little corner of the world
Tumblr media
The film was enjoyable to be a part of because it all seemed to work. The story and the crew were a good matchup. The directors were all top notch. I was lucky to work with people like Matt O'Callahan whose story sketches were great inspiration to all of us. Rob Minkoff and Mark Henn  breathed life into the violin playing mighty mouse of deductions and his trusty sidekick Dawson. Glen Keane was unleased for one of his best performances to date with his portrayal of the notorious Ratigan. Henry Mancini was and still is one of my favorite composers and I was able to work with him on other films besides Basil and he even invited me to his studio office early one morning for a chance to see and hear his latest magic. Then out of the blue, the title was questioned. Management decided to test market the name "Basil of Baker Street" to some small kids and came back to us that it wasn't working and that the children preferred the name, "The Great Mouse Detective" much better.
They were also concerned over the recent box office failure of Steven Spielberg's "Young Sherlock Holmes" and wanted to distance themselves from that film. This totally ridiculous move by management led to the infamous memo that went out with new titles for all the classic Disney Animated features to date. One inside joke of course was that "Aristocats" was the sole title unchanged in the fake memo. This memo circulated throughout the company and internationally and the animation staff thought it was hilarious. Management was furious besides being embarrassed and called an inquisition to nab the perpetrator but to no avail. No one on the crew was going to rat out the culprit although we all knew the author. It's funny that decades later the current  Disney management team has renamed, "Rapunzel" to "Tangled"  somehow because "The Princess and the Frog" didn't meet someone's box office expectations (I thought it did well) and they are blaming both titles with attracting girls only. As the old saying goes, "... only the names change," especially at later day Disney.
Sherlock Holmes Musem London
By this time Don Griffith had retired, along with Woolie, Frank, Ollie, Milt, and other great disney alumni. Part of the magic for me was seeing these guys and learning what I could from their immense talent. I also missed hanging with the veterans during break times or lunch and hearing some great stories of "the old days" with Walt. Brad Bird, Tim Burton and John Lasseter had also moved on and so the studio had lost even recently acquired top talent. In addition to the creative ranks being depleted, we had also been moved in the middle of production, to a converted warehouse in Glendale off the studio lot and out of the old animation building. I missed our old digs, the backlot walks, the morgue and its history. At this point I also decided it was  time to move on.
Tumblr media
Setting up what would become DTV
All the locations on Basil were set and the background keys were done. There was tons of reference we had collected and donated if anyone needed to go back to the source. I went to work for the Bagdasarians on, "The Chipmunk Adventure", and for Disney TV on their new small screen offerings, "Gummi Bears" and "Ducktales". Ken Anderson was also brought on board for the launch of "Gummi Bears" designing the main tree so that was a highlight to be paired with the maestro again if only for a brief stint on publicity concept art. Some of my former crewmates on "Basil", Ed Gombert, Toby Sheldon, and others soon joined the party at Disney TV which added to the fun we had over in North Hollywood.
My wife and I were eventually invited back to the House of Mouse for the wrap party with the film officially entitled, "The Great Mouse Detective". We could each bring a guest so I brought Bill Frake and my wife invited his lovely wife Kathy. Bill had introduced us to Rowland Wilson and his equally talented wife Suz. We had quite the adventure one night at the Magic Castle which for time I won't go into here. Bill was a layout man I had known and worked with and he had contributed a bit to Basil and I wanted him there to enjoy the party . As the evening went on, two of the film's directors, John and Ron came by to say hi and catch up. As he sat down at our table, John Musker leaned forward and asked if I was interested in Art Directing a new film he and Ron were going to direct, something called, "The Little Mermaid."

Exploring Data Visualization Techniques in Data Science
Data visualisation is an essential part of data science that aids in comprehending complicated data sets and gaining insightful conclusions. Visualising data allows us to identify outliers, outlier patterns, and trends that may not be readily apparent from raw data alone. We shall examine several data visualisation methods employed by organisations like 360DigiTMG institution in this post.
Bar Charts and Histograms:
Categorical data is displayed using bar charts, wherein every category is denoted by a bar and its height or length reflects the value of the data. A particular kind of bar chart called a histogram is used to show how a continuous numerical quantity is distributed. The data science institutes in hyderabad is divided into bins, and the frequency or number of data points that fall into each bin is shown.
Line Charts:
Line charts are effective for displaying trends over time or across a continuous variable. They are commonly used to visualize stock prices, weather trends, or any data that has a sequence or order.
Scatter Plots:
Scatter plots display individual data points as dots on a 2D plane, with one variable on the x-axis and another on the y-axis. They are useful for identifying relationships, correlations, and clusters within data points.
Pie Charts:
Elements of a whole are represented using pie charts. They are effective when you want to show the distribution of a categorical variable as a percentage of the whole.
Heatmaps:
Heatmaps use color to represent the values of a matrix or a 2D dataset. They are often used to visualize correlations in large datasets, where each cell represents the relationship between two variables.
Tumblr media
Box Plots:
Box plots (or box-and-whisker plots) display the distribution of a dataset's summary statistics such as median, quartiles, and potential outliers. They are useful for identifying skewness, variability, and outliers in the data.
Bubble Charts:
Bubble charts are similar to scatter plots but add an additional dimension by varying the size of the data points (bubbles) to represent a third variable. This can provide insights into relationships between three variables.
Treemaps:
Treemaps represent hierarchical data structures by dividing a rectangular area into smaller rectangles, where each rectangle represents a category or sub-category. Different variables can be represented by changing the rectangles' size and colour.
Violin Plots:
Violin plots combine the features of box plots and kernel density plots. They show the distribution of data analytics courses in hyderabad with placements across different categories or groups and provide a visual representation of the data's probability density.
Network Graphs:
Network graphs (or node-link diagrams) are used to visualize relationships and connections between different entities. Edges represent connections between nodes, which represent entities.
Word Clouds:
Word clouds are a way to visualize textual data by displaying words in varying sizes, with more frequently occurring words appearing larger. They are often used to summarize large amounts of text data.
Geospatial Maps:
Geospatial maps use geographic data to visualize information on maps. They are particularly useful for showing regional variations, distribution patterns, and spatial relationships.
It's crucial to take your data's nature, the insights you wish to express, and your target audience into account when selecting a data visualisation approach. In data science, organisations like 360DigiTMG institute, a well chosen and well-designed visualisation may considerably improve comprehension of complicated data and promote more informed decision-making.

79th track: "Am I Dreaming" is a song by American record producer Metro Boomin, American rapper ASAP Rocky, and American singer Roisee. It was released through Boominati Worldwide and Republic Records as the second track from Metro's first soundtrack album, which was for the film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, on June 2, 2023. The song was produced by Metro himself, Mike Dean, Peter Lee Johnson, and Scriptplugg, and the four wrote it with ASAP Rocky and Roisee. It plays during the opening sequence of the film's closing credits. The track has received widespread critical acclaim especially for the promising introduction of Roisee into the mainstream and was shortlisted for the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 96th Academy Awards, though it ultimately did not receive a nomination for the award.
The song features a string quartet sample in the key of A minor overlaid with synths and a trap beat with a tempo of 90 beats per minute.[1][2] The string quartet sample was done by Peter Lee Johnson. In an interview, Metro Boomin talks about how he asked Johnson create some maximalist violins in the themes of 2010s era Kanye West.[3] According to film co-writer and co-producer Phil Lord, Metro Boomin had texted him the strings sample and worked with producer MIKE DEAN to add the synths to the sample, creating what would later become "Am I Dreaming".[1]
In the first verse, ASAP Rocky raps from the perspective of Miles Morales from the film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse using lyrics like "Count up my ones, lacin' up my favorite 1s" and "Kiss my momma on the forehead 'fore I get the Code Red / And swing by 410, beef patty, cornbread".[4] He references the film and possibly his life before fame. Rookie artist Roisee sings the chorus and adds a verse of her own.
80th track: "Murder on the Dancefloor" is a song written by Sophie Ellis-Bextorand Gregg Alexander, produced by Alexander and Matt Rowe for Ellis-Bextor's debut studio album, Read My Lips (2001). Released on 3 December 2001, the song peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart and became a top-10 hit worldwide, charting within the top three in Australia, New Zealand, and four European countries. In the United States, the single reached number nine on the BillboardMaxi-Singles Sales chart. "Murder on the Dancefloor" is reported to have been the most played song in Europe in 2002.[2]
In January 2024, following its use in the film Saltburn and its subsequent popularity on TikTok, "Murder on the Dancefloor" again reached number two on the UK Singles Chart, becoming Ellis-Bextor's first top-10 appearance since 2007. It entered the US Billboard Hot 100 the same month, making it Ellis-Bextor's first appearance on that chart. It also peaked at number 10 on the BillboardGlobal 200, her first top-ten and overall first entry on the chart.[3]
The music video was directed by Sophie Muller,[1] and it centres around a dance competition which was inspired by the film They Shoot Horses Don't They? (1969) about a dance marathon.[18] The winner's prize consists of a pair of golden high-heel shoes and a substantial amount of money. Desperate to win and sizing up the competition, Ellis-Bextor proceeds to sneakily injure and disqualify the majority of the other dancers. She trips one then unties another's dress and snatches it off her, causing her to run off. Next she slyly poisons a trio of potential rivals by spiking the punch during a refreshment period. Then she causes another to slip on a pat of butter and finally frames a dancer for cheating on his partner by planting a G-stringon his person; this results in his partner slapping him and exiting the dance floor.
Ellis-Bextor also turns her attention to the trio of judges. By using what seems to be chloroform, she incapacitates the only female judge on the panel. Noticing that the lead judge (played by Colin Stinton) has a weak spot for beautiful women, Ellis-Bextor approaches him when he is alone and beguiles him. Lovestruck, the lead judge succeeds in persuading the remaining judge to have Ellis-Bextor declared the winner, much to her fellow dancers' disapproval.
The video concludes with the other dancers grudgingly applauding (before promptly deserting) Ellis-Bextor and her dance partner, as she happily clutches her cash prize and the golden shoes on the winner's podium.
81st track: "Never Knew Love Like This Before" is a song written and produced by James Mtume and Reggie Lucas, and recorded by American R&B singer Stephanie Mills for her fourth studio album, Sweet Sensation (1980). The single was released in August 1980 by 20th Century Fox Records and is inspired by the birth of Lucas' daughter Lisa.[1]
"Never Knew Love Like This Before" won Best R&B Song and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 23rd Annual Grammy Awards in 1981,[4] beating fellow nominees including Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Roberta Flack, and Minnie Riperton.[5]
The track received a renewed interest after the song title was used for the fourth episode of the second season of the American drama series Pose, which aired on 9 July 2019. The episode concludes with the character of Candy, portrayed by Angelica Ross, lip-synching to the song; the scene received critical acclaim.[6] In 2023, Rolling Stoneranked "Never Knew Love Like This Before" number 19 in their list of "The 50 Most Inspirational LGBTQ Songs of All Time". And it was sampled and interpolated by gospel artist Charles Jenkins and fellowship Chicago in the song “Never knew love”

Bonus post: Stats 101 - testing data for normality & significance tests for categorical and continuous variables.
Understanding and analysing data can be a tremendously daunting task, so I thought I would put together a simple go-to guide on how to approach your data, whether it be numerical or categorical. 📈📊
This post will cover:
Types of data
Contingency tables and significance tests for categorical data
Testing for normality in continuous data
Significance tests for continuous variables
NB: Remember to keep your data organised, especially if you are using software packages like ‘R’, MATLAB, etc.
Before I move on, I would like to thank the University of Sheffield core bioinformatics group for most of the content below. 💡
Types of data
Tumblr media
There are two main types:
Numerical - data that is measurable, such as time, height, weight, amount, and so on. You can identify numerical data by seeing if you can average or order the data in either ascending or descending order.
Continuous numerical data has an infinite number of possible values, which can be represented as whole numbers or fractions e.g. temperature, age.
Discrete numerical data is based on counts. Only a finite number of values is possible, and the values cannot be subdivided e.g. number of red blood cells in a sample, number of flowers in a field.
Categorical - represents types of data that may be divided into groups e.g. race, sex, age group, educational level.
Nominal categorical data is used to label variables without providing any quantitative value e.g smoker or non smoker.
Ordinal categorical data has variables that exist in naturally occurring ordered categories and the distances between the categories is not known e.g. heat level of a chilli pepper, movie ratings, anything involving a Likert scale.
Contingency tables & significance tests for categorical variables
Contingency tables (also called crosstabs or two-way tables) are used in statistics to summarise the relationship between several categorical variables.
An example of a contingency table:
Tumblr media
A great way to visualise categorical data is to use a bar plot/chart, which looks something like this:
Tumblr media
There are two main hypothesis tests for categorical data:
Chi-squared test
Fisher exact test
Chi-squared test:
Compares the distribution of two categorical variables in a contingency table to see if they are related e.g. smoking and prevalence of lung cancer.
Measures difference between what is actually observed in the data and what would be expected if there was truly no relationship between the variables.
Fisher exact test:
Is used instead of Chi-squared when >20% of cells have expected values of <5, or any cell has a count of <1.
If you want to compare several contingency tables for repeated tests of independence i.e. when you have data that you've repeated at different times or locations, you can use the Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel test.
More detail:
In this situation, there are three nominal categorical variables: the two variables of the contingency test of independence, and the third nominal variable that identifies the repeats (such as different times, different locations, or different studies). For example, you conduct an experiment in winter to see whether legwarmers reduce arthritis. With just one set of people, you'd have two nominal variables (legwarmers vs. control, reduced pain vs. same level of pain), each with two values. If you repeated the same experiment in spring, with a new group, and then again in summer, you would have an added variable: different seasons and groups. You could just add the data together and do a Fisher's exact test, but it would be better to keep each of the three experiments separate. Maybe legwarmers work in the winter but not in the summer, or maybe your first set of volunteers had worse arthritis than your second and third sets etc. In addition, combining different studies together can show a "significant" difference in proportions when there isn't one, or even show the opposite of a true difference. This is known as Simpson's paradox. To avoid this, it's better to use the Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel for this type of data.
Testing for normality in continuous data
The first thing you should do before you do ANYTHING else with your continuous data, is determine whether it is or isn’t normally distributed, this will in turn help you choose the correct significance test to analyse your data.
A normal (also known as parametric) distribution is a symmetric distribution where most of the observations cluster around the central peak and the probabilities for values further away from the mean taper off equally in both directions. If plotted, this will look like a symmetrical bell-shaped graph:
Tumblr media
A standard deviation (SD) can be calculated to measure the amount of variation or dispersion of a set of values from the mean. The main and most important purpose of this is to understand how spread out a data set is; a high SD implies that, on average, data points are all pretty far from the average. The opposite is true for a low SD means most points are very close to the average. Generally, smaller variability is better because it represents more precise measurements and yields more accurate analyses..
In a normal distribution, SD will look something like this:
Tumblr media
In a normal distribution, skewness (measure of assymetry) and kurtosis (the sharpness of the peak) should be equal to or close to 0, otherwise it becomes a variable distribution.
Tumblr media
Testing for normality
Various graphical methods are available to assess the normality of a distribution. The main ones are:
A histogram, which will look something like this:
Tumblr media
Histograms help visually identify whether the data is normally distributed based on the aforementioned skewness and kurtosis.
A Q-Q plot:
Tumblr media
Q-Q plots allow to compare the quantiles of a data set against a theoretical normal distribution. If the majority of points lie on the diagonal line then the data are approximately normal.
and...
A box plot:
Tumblr media
A box plot is an excellent way of displaying continuous data when you are interested in the spread of your data. The thick horizontal bar indicates the median, the top and bottom of the box indicate the interquartile range, and the whiskers represent the spread of data outside of this interquartile range. The dots beyond the whiskers represent outliers, which represent observations that are distant from other observations.
A disadvantage of the box plot is that you don’t see the exact data points. However, box plots are very useful in large datasets where plotting all of the data may give an unclear picture of the shape of your data.
A violin plot is sometimes used in conjunction with the box plot to show density information.
Keep in mind that for real-life data, the results are unlikely to give a perfect plot, so some degree of judgement and prior experience with the data type are required.
Significance tests
Aside from graphical methods, there are also significance tests, which are used to test for normality. These tests compare data to a normal distribution, whereby if the result is significant the distribution is NOT normal.
The three most common tests are:
Shapiro-Wilk Test (sample size <5000)
Anderson-Darling Test (sample size > or = 20)
Kolmogorov-Smirnov Test (sample size > or = 1000)
Significance tests for continuous variables
A quick guide for choosing the appropriate test for your data set:
Tumblr media
t-test - normally distributed (parametric) data
There are three types of t-test
Tumblr media
One sample t-test: Compares the mean of the sample with a pre-specified value (population mean) e.g. if the average score of medical students in UK universities is 72 and you want to test whether the average score of medical students in your university is higher/lower, you would need to specify the population mean, in this case 72, when running your t-test.
A two-sample t-test: Should be used if you want to compare the measurements of two populations. There are two types of the two-sample t-test: paired (dependent) and independent (unpaired). To make the correct choice, you need to understand your underlying data.
Dependent samples t-test (paired): Compares the mean between two dependent groups e.g. comparing the average score of medical students at the University of Sheffield before and after attending a revision course, or comparing the mean blood pressure of patients before and after treatment. Independent samples t-test (unpaired): Compares the mean between two independent groups e.g. average score of medical students between University of Sheffield and the University of Leeds, or comparing the mean response of two groups of patients to treatment vs. control in a clinical trial.
There are several assumptions for the independent (unpaired) t-test:
Tumblr media
The t-test assumes that the data has equal variance and relies on the data to be normally-distributed. If there isn’t sufficient confidence in this assumption, there are different statistical tests that can be applied. Rather than calculating and comparing the means and variances of different groups they are rank-based methods. However, they still come with a set of assumptions and involve the generation of test statistics and p-values.
Welch t-test, for instance, assumes differences in variance.
Wilcoxon test (also commonly known as the Mann-Whitney U test) can be used when the data is not normally distributed. This test should not be confused with the Wilcoxon signed rank test (which is used for paired tests).
The assumptions of the Wilcoxon/Mann-Whitney U test are as follows:
The dependent variable is ordinal or continuous.
The data consist of a randomly selected sample of independent observations from two independent groups.
The dependent variables for the two independent groups share a similar shape.
Summary of the above:
Tumblr media
ANOVA - normally distributed (parametric) data
Like the t-test, there are several types of ANOVA tests:
Tumblr media
One-way ANOVA:
Equivalent to the independent t-test but for > 2 groups. If you want to compare more than two groups, a one-way ANOVA can be used to simultaneously compare all groups, rather than carrying out several individual two-sample t-tests e.g. to compare the mean of average scores of medical students between the University of Sheffield, the University of Leeds, and the University of Manchester.
The main advantage of doing this is that it reduces the number of tests being carried out, meaning that the type I error rate is also reduced.
Two-way ANOVA:  2 categorical (grouping variables) e.g. comparing the average score of medical students between the University of Sheffield, the University of Leeds, and the University of Manchester AND between males and females.
Repeated measures ANOVA
Equivalent to a paired t-test but for >2 repeated measures e.g. comparing the average score of medical students at University of Sheffield for mid-terms, terms, and finals.
If any of the above ANOVA tests produce a significant result, you also need to carry out a Post-Hoc test.
Post-Hoc test e.g. Tukey HSD
A significant ANOVA result it tells us that there is at least on difference in the groups. However, it does not tell us which group is different. For this, we can apply a post-hoc test such as the Tukey HSD (honest significant difference) test, which is a statistical tool used to determine which sets of data produced a statistically significant result...
For example, for the average scores of medical students between the University of Sheffield, the University of Leeds, and the University of Manchester, the Tukey HSD output may look something like this:
Tumblr media
This shows a significant difference between medical students in Manchester and Sheffield and between Leeds and Manchester but not Leeds and Sheffield.
Kruskal Wallis and Friedman tests
Tumblr media
Data that does not meet the assumptions of ANOVA (e.g. normality) can be tested using a non-parametric alternative. The Kruskal-Wallis test is derived from the one-way ANOVA, but uses ranks rather than actual observations. It is also the extension of the Mann-Whitney U test to greater than two groups. Like the one-way ANOVA, this will only tell us that at least one group is different and not specifically which group(s). The Post-Hoc Dunn test is recommended, which also performs a multiple testing correction. For the Friedman test, you can use the Wilcoxon signed-ranks Post-Hoc test. And that is your go-to guide to on how to approach your data! I really hope you find it useful; it definitely helps clarify things for me. ✨
GOOD LUCK!

Note
ok lots of asks incoming jdhjs i just picked random-ish numbers and names but yeah anyway!! hope you're having a good night :)
past (for q): 3, 6, 8; present (for gabi): 8, 9, 12; and future (for perlah): 2, 7, 8
omg omg omg ok. cool. ok. thank youuuuu
PAST: q
3 - describe their family. who raised them, and who had the most impact on them? did they have any siblings? who were they closest to? what were the family dynamics like?
q is the only child in a fairly affluent family - rich enough to send hir to a boarding school, where ze spent most of their time with ellie, the only other queer kid that ze knew of. hir parents are quite distant, and very traditional, constantly emulating the looks and values of old money folks, which unfortunately meant that for all of hir teenage years, q's only confidante was ellie. school was an extremely isolating experience for her because ze was closeted everywhere, and ze was in the girls' dorm while ellie was in the boys' dorm, so ze only saw her in class/leisure hours, and ze tended to feel really lonely at night.
6 - did the location they grew up in affect them significantly? do they still go there?
ze has literally no love for that place. it's a pretty joyless area, no matter how many brownstones they pass or how many trees are planted on the streets. wrought iron and spring leaves can't make a place feel like somewhere people live, which is why q hasn't been back there since ze left home at 18.
8 - what was their childhood/teenage bedroom like?
q's bedroom at home was COVERED in whatever heavy metal posters they could find in innercity record shops, apart from one wall, on which ze put up paper before proceeding to write all over it; diagrams, homework equations, bad poetry, song lyrics, swear words, you name it. it was very much a typical 'rebellious teen' bedroom, partly to piss of hir parents and partly to make hir feel more like hirself when ze was in there. none of that was present in their dorm, though. that had white walls and sensible carpeting and a desk, and that was it.
PRESENT: gabi
8 - what hobby or pastime of theirs do they consider most important to them and why?
bullet journalling. he genuinely does pride himself on organisation, and this is something that actively encourages it, as well as being an outlet for the impulse to put everything in order that doesn't involve wrecking the apartment or committing a crime.
9 - what kind of place do they live in?
he lives in a really really nice apartment on the fourth floor of a building that was retrofitted in the 70s. you know it's a nice apartment because, despite rent being extremely low citywide, they had to get a fourth roommate to cover the rent. he shares a room with cora, which is mostly pretty dark (black and grey sheets, gothic full-length mirror on the black closet), with his desk being the most colourful thing in the room: it's covered in different brands of brush pen, post it notes arranged in a grid on the wall, a gantt chart printed out and stuck to the side of things he has coming up, a t shirt he's been drawing a fractal on for a week now, shit like that.
the only other room gabi frequents is the kitchen, which is mint green with white tiles and mismatched wooden furniture. it's a pretty standard kitchen in terms of mess levels, and gabi is under no circumstances allowed to change the order of anything in there or cora will go ballistic. she's the one who uses the spices most, so it's only fair she gets to decide how they're arranged. (no system of any kind other than 'vibes')
12 - if someone mentioned their name to someone else, what would they immediately think of (i.e. defining characteristic, appearance- or personality-wise)?
when he was in school, it probably would have been 'size', because he was built like if lady dimitrescu went to high school and had a very unremarkable bob. currently, however, it's definitely the hair, which consists of a raspberry-pink grown out mullet and turquoise fringe. personality wise it's that he's gives off the same vibe as a violin bow that's been tightened to the point where it's just about to snap, but hasn't snapped yet.
FUTURE: perlah
2 - are they content with their future situation? is there anything they would change?
i'll be honest: she probably wouldn't be too pleased she's dead. or that she's being used as a martyr, or that her death is justifying a manhunt for cora.
7 - are their friends still a part of their life? are there people they are no longer in touch with, or newly important people?
well, in the most literal sense, no. in a more figurative sense then somewhat? everyone assumes katy is 'the girlfriend' and that gabi was manipulated by cora, and that cora was scheming to kill perlah and take her money or something all along. so they're all involved in the news coverage, and katy has finally met perlah's parents, who held her hands and sobbed a lot.
8 - would they become a mentor figure for anyone?
no, unfortunately. despite exuding grace and easy charm, perlah wasn't a role model for anybody, unless it's to be used as a cautionary tale about mingling with the criminals in the masses.

Listening to Rolling Stone's Top 500 Albums of All Time
Rolling Stone released an updated list of their top 500 albums of all time and being trapped in the purgatory of covid quarantine this seems like the perfect moment to tackle what an almost completely irrelevant former counter-culture institution has to say about music (we can’t actually blame Rolling Stone for this list, a huge number of musicians and critics voted to make it). I am going to listen to every single one of these, all the way through, with a level of attention that's not super intense but I'm definitely not having them on in the background as simple aural wallpaper. Two caveats though: I can make an executive decision to skip any album if I feel the experience is sufficiently miserable, and I'm also going to be skipping the compilation albums that I feel aren't really worth slots (best ofs, etc.). In addition, I will be ordering them as I go, creating a top 500 of the top 500 (it will be less than 500 since we've already established I'm skipping some of these).
Here are 500-490:
#500 Arcade Fire - Funeral
I can already tell I'm going to be at odds with this list if one of the most important albums of my high school years is at the bottom. That being said, I haven't actually given this whole thing a listen since probably the early 2010s, before Arcade Fire fatigue set in and the hipsterati appointed band of a generation just kinda seemed to fade from popular consciousness. I actually dreaded re-experiencing it, since the synthesis of anthemic rock and quirky folk instrumentation which Arcade Fire brought mainstream has now become the common shorthand of insufferable spotify friendly folk pop. Blessedly, the first half of the album easily holds up, largely propelled by dirty fast rhythm guitar, orchestration that's tuneful rather than obnoxious, and lyrics which come off as earnest rather than pretentious. The middle gets a little sappy and “Crown of Love”, a song I definitely used to like, really starts the grate. And then we get to “Wake Up”, whose cultural saturation spawned thousands of dorky indie rock outfits that confused layered strings and horns with power and meaning. This song definitely hasn't survived the film trailers and commercials which it so ubiquitously overlayed, but the line about "a million little gods causing rainstorms, turning every good thing to rust" still attacks the part of my brain capable of sincere emotion. This album is probably going to hold the top spot for a while, because although so many elements of Funeral that made it feel so meaningful, that made it stand out so much in 2004, have been seamlessly assimilated into an intellectually and emotionally bankrupt indie pop industrial complex, the album itself still has a genuine vulnerability and bangers that still manage to rip.
#499
Rufus, Chaka Khan - Ask Rufus
Before she became a name in her own right, Chaka Khan was the voice of the band Rufus, and it’s definitely her voice that shines amongst some spritely vibey funk. That’s not to say that these aren’t some jams on their own. “At Midnight” is a banging opener with a sprint to the finish, and although the explicitly named but kinda boring “Slow Screw Against the Wall” feels weak, this wasn’t really supposed to be an album of barn burners. This was something people put on their vinyl record players while they chilled on vinyl furniture after a night of doing cocaine. “Everlasting Love” is a bop with a bassline like a Sega Genesis game, and the twinkling piano on “Hollywood” adds a playful levity to lyrics that are supposed to be both tackily optimistic about making it big out in LA and subtly realistic about the kind of nightmare world showbiz can be. “Better Days” is another track that manages to be a bittersweet jam with a catchy sour saxophone and playful synths under Chaka Khan’s vamping. This album definitely belongs on a ‘chill funk to study and relax to’ playlist.
#498
Suicide - Suicide
We’ve hit the first album that could be rightly called a progenitor for multiple genres that followed it. Someone could say there’s a self-serving element of this being on a Rolling Stone list (the band was one of the first to adopt the label ‘Punk’ after seeing it in a Lester Bangs article) but the album’s legacy is basically indisputable. EBM, industrial, punk, post-punk, new wave, new whatever all have a genealogy that connects to Suicide, and it’s easy to hear the band in everything that followed. But what the band actually is is two guys, one with an electric organ and one with a spooky voice, doing spooky simple riffs and saying spooky simple things. Simplicity is definitely not a dis here. The opener “Ghost Rider” makes a banger out of four notes and one instrument, and the refrain ‘America America is killing its youth’ is really all the lyrical complexity you need to fucking get it. “Cheree” and “Girl” have almost identical lyrics (‘oh baby’ vs ‘oh girl’) but “Cheree” is more like a fairy tale and “Girl” is more like a sonic handjob. “Frankie Teardrop” has the audacity to tell a ten minute story with its lyrics, but of course there is intermittent, actually way too loud screaming breaking up the narrative of a guy who loses everything then kills his family and himself. The song is basically a novelty, and I think you can probably say the whole album is a novelty between its brevity and character. But for a bite sized snack this album casts a huge shadow.
#497
Various Artists - The Indestructible Beat of Soweto
The fact that this particular compilation always ends up in the canon has a lot to do with the cultural context it existed in, being America’s first encounter with South African contemporary music during the decline of apartheid (it wouldn’t end until a decade later in 1994 with the country’s first multi-racial elections). Music journos often bring up the fact Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the all male choir singing on the album ender “Nansi Imali”, sang on Paul Simon’s Graceland like their virtue is they helped Paul Simon get over his depression and not, like, the actual music. But also like, how is the actual music? Jams. Ubiquitous, hooky guitars propel the songs along with bright choruses over low lead vocals, but I didn’t expect the synthesizer on the bop “Qhude Manikiniki”, nor the discordant hoedown violin on “Sobabamba”. “Holotelani” is a groove to walk into the sunset to.
#496
Shakira - Donde Estan los Ladrones
So this is the first head scratcher on the list. It’s not like it sucks. And I think I prefer this 90s guitar pop driven spanish language Shakira to modern superstar Shakira. But I mean, it’s an album of late nineties latin pop minivan music, with a thick syrupy middle that doesn’t do anything for me. The opener and closer stand out though.  ‘Ciega, Sordomuda’, one of the biggest pop songs of the 90s (it was #1 on the charts of literally every country in Latin America), has a galloping acoustic guitar and horn hits with Shakira’s vocals at their most percussive.
#495
Boyz II Men - II
So, if you were alive in the 90s you know Boyz II Men were fucking huge, and the worst song on the album is the second track “All Around the World”, basically a love song to their own success, and also the women they’ve banged. You can tell it was written specifically so that the crowd could go fucking wild when they heard their state/city/country mentioned in the song, and I’m not gonna double check but I’m sure they hit all fifty states. Once you’re over that hump though you basically have an hour of songs to fuck to. “U Know” keeps it catchy with propulsive midi guitar and synth horns, “Jezzebel” starts with a skit and ends with a richly layered jazz tune about falling in love on a train, and “On Bended Knee” has a Ragnarok Online type beat. Honestly this album can drag, but you’re not supposed to be listening to it alone in a state of analysis, you’re supposed to have it on during a date that’s going really, really well.
#494
The Ronettes - Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes
A singles compilation of the Ronettes, the only ones I immediately recognized were ‘Be My Baby’ and ‘Going to the Chapel of Love’, the latter of which I didn’t know existed since the version of the song I knew was by the Dixie Cups, which was apparently a source of drama since the Ronettes did it first but producer Phil Spector refused to release it. I feel like as a retro trip to sixties girl groups it’s full of enough songs about breaking up (for example “Breaking Up”) getting back together (for example “Breaking Up”) and wanting to get married but you can’t, because you’re a teenager (“So Young”).
#493
Marvin Gaye - Here, My Dear
This album only exists because Marvin was required by his divorce settlement to make it and provide all of the royalties to his ex-wife and motown executive Anna Gordy Gaye. It’s absolutely bizarre, phoned in mid tempo funk whose lyrics range from the passive aggressive (“This is what you wanted right?”) to the petulant (“Why do I have to pay attorney’s fees?”). There is a seething realness here that crosses well past the border of uncomfortable. I don’t think it’s an amazing album to listen to, but it’s an amazing album to exist: Marvin Gaye is legally obligated to throw his own divorce pity party, and everyone's invited.
#492
Bonnie Raitt - Nick of Time
I have never heard of Bonnie Raitt before but apparently this album won several grammys including album of the year in 1989 and sold 5 million copies, which I guess goes to show that no award provides less long term relevance than the grammys. The story around the album is pretty heartwarming, it was her first massive hit after a career of whiffs, and Bonnie Raitt herself is apparently a social activist and neat human being. I say all this because this sort of 80s country blues rock doesn't really connect with me, but the artist obviously deserves more than that. I unequivocally like the title track though, a hand-clap backed winding electric piano groove about literally finding love before your eggs dry up.
#491
Harry Styles - Fine Line
I do not think I have ever heard a one direction song because I am an adult who only listens to public radio. I’m totally open to pop bands or boy bands or boy band refugee solo artists, but I don’t like anything here. It’s like a mixtape of the worst pop trends of the decade, from glam rock that sounds like it belongs in a car commercial to folky bullshit that sounds like it belongs in a more family focused car commercial. This gets my first DNP (Does Not Place).
#490
Linda Ronstadt - Heart Like a Wheel
Another soft-rock blues and country album which just doesn’t land with me. But the opener “You’re No Good” is like a soul/country hybrid which still goes hard and the title track hits with the lyrics “And it's only love and it's only love / That can wreck a human being and turn him inside out”.
Current Ranking, which is weirdly almost like an inverse of the rolling stones list so far;

instructions: tag ten people you’d like to know better
i was tagged by: the sweetest and most darling @mudhorns
name: I scoot between Apollo and Oliver - either are good! Apollo is for the newer crowd.
starsign: Leo sun, Taurus moon, Virgo rising - I am told I have a “wholesome chart” and, you know what, yeah.
hogwarts house: Slytherin sun, Gryffindor moon, Hufflepuff rising. I will not be taking questions or criticism at this time.
height: 5′6 - average baby size.
favorite animal: I love a giraffe. House cats win on principal because I would die for any cat I come across. Big fan of trash cats, dogs, and pandas too - opossums, skunks, and racoons.
dogs or cats: see above. Love dogs sm but cats? Flawless. Spectacular.
when you made your blog: You think I want to broadcast how long I’ve been in this hellhole?
why you made your blog: for the gay shit
reason for your url: edward kaspbrak is my broken son
what i am wearing: Sweatpants, this terrible tank top that is the comfiest thing I own, and a black bandana to keep my disgusting quarantine hair out of my face. These are comfort hours.
dream vacation: I’d love to do a round trip of Europe. I was born in the UK, but didn’t move beyond my hometown and a town in Scotland where my grandpa lived. Going back to Scotland is something I would like to do as a long term thing, but in regards to vacationing - I’d love to flounce my way through Italy and Germany, dip my horrible self over to Greece, peep France a lil, then roll back over to the UK to chill with family.
instruments: Oof, okay, you ready? I play the violin and the piano, and I sing. I can vaguely strum out some tunes on the ukelele. I have played, and have since given up, the bass guitar, the french horn, the clarinet, and the saxophone.

a job you had that would surprise people: I used to give ghost tours with @mudhorns! (With a ghost tour company - we weren’t just standing outside Fort Asshole propositioning strangers, I promise...)
do you think aliens are real: Yeah and I’m afraid of them.
what’s your guilty pleasure: I don’t really believe in ‘guilty’ pleasures because I don’t think you should feel guilty for enjoying the things that you enjoy. The thing I’m most reluctant to express enjoyment for in the real world is South Park. It norty but it make me gigle :c  (I feel like I should also shout out Until Dawn as a guilty pleasure because I’ve played it 6 times, and forcing other people to play it is one of my favourite activities? The guilt isn’t in enjoying the content, it’s in bullying everyone else to enjoy the content with me.)
tattoos: None, but I’d like one someday! Maybe! I’m very afraid of permanent things! It’s also not something I can be willy nilly about since I want to go into classical theatre. I think I’d like to get something Les Mis related?
any phobias: I am so afraid of butterflies and moths. Petrified. It’s not cute. I’m Blathers.
do you talk to yourself: Sometimes! If I’m confused then I will talk myself through the confusing thing. I also read to myself quite frequently!

the first thing that you remember you wanted to be when you grew up: I wanted to be an archaeologist for no reason other than I managed to read that word by myself when I was still learning to read.

Sanders Sides Marching/Concert Band! AU
So about two weeks ago I made a shit post about me procrastinating writing Cursed Kingdom and making a band AU instead.
Well it happened. And I'm highkey living for it.
As for Cursed Kingdom, I'm halfway through writing the next chart! I also have my notes all ready for the next part of Heart Point.
With all that said, enjoy!
Marching/Concert band AU!
Flutist/Head Section Leader! Roman
* The rest of his section are all girls
* And they all (platonically) love Ro
* Freshman year, someone made a bitchy comment about Ro being the only guy and the section leader fucking decked them
* Roman became a section leader junior year and aspires to be as badass as the section leader his freshman year
* Loves marching, but is better at concert
* Like, Ro impressed Thomas with his marching pieces, but damn ask Ro to play fast dramatic or slow passionate concert pieces and he'll steal your heart
* Can also play guitar
* Has been trying to convince Thomas to let him join strings on guitar and Thomas patiently reminds him strings doesn't work like that
* Romans also a choir kid
* Once the band was at a game and the person who was supposed to sing the National anthem got sick and Thomas made Ro do it
* Ro paints his nails before concerts; he loves how the color looks against his flute when he's playing
* The flutes have a tradition where they put glitter on their faces (cheekbones) for football games
* Ro is the best at doing the glitter and all the girls make it do it for them
* Buys his section lunch on the last day of band camp
* Bitches about the tan lines he gets from his flip-folder
* Screamed for a solid ten minutes when he learned they were doing a Disney teamed show sophomore year
* Has made it for regional sand was first alternate for all-states Junior year (he was livid)
* Wears his varsity jacket all the time: he got it freshman year for lacrosse and got band added Junior year and he loves it
* Wants to go for music education and be a high school band/choir director
* Now as a senior, Ro is head section leader and has his hands on the school's singular piccolo (everyone is doomed)
Saxophonist/Equipment Manager! Virgil
* Virgil can play alto, tenor and barry sax with the same ease, but prefers tenor
* He has a little storm cloud pin on his saxophone strap
* His section is relatively small and he likes it that way
* Virgil helped so much with getting people's instruments on the truck and lugging cases around, Thomas gave him to the position of equipment manager halfway though sophomore marching season
* Once, some left their trombone on the truck and it was ten o'clock at night and Vee wanted to go home so he stormed into the band room and screamed "WHOEVER'S TROMBONE IS ON THE TRUCK THEY BETTER COME FUCKING GET IN BEFORE I SHOVE THEIR SLIDE UP THEIR ASS!"
* Safe to say that everyone was very careful about getting their instruments off the truck afterwards
* Virgil's speciality is Jazz
* Improv? Virgil can blow your mind. All his anxieties seem to vanish when he plays
* Expect for during auditions
* His first audition, he had a panic attack in the room and had to leave
* Thomas fought tooth and nail for Virgil to be able to audition again and stayed in the room with Vee during the audition to prevent another attack
* Made all-State jazz Junior year
* Also plays piano
* Once told everyone he wrote a song and proceeded to go up to the piano and angrily smash buttons and then bowed and said thank you
* Everyone thought he was for real and it was an actual, extremely Improvised, song
* Virgil wears his Letterman once in a blue moon, he prefers his hoodies. His Letterman only has band because physical activity? G r o s s
* Always has sunscreen/bug spray during band Camp because he burns so easily and bug bites eww
* Learned a bunch of meme songs and can play them by heart
* Wants to go for Music Therapy
* Senior year, Virgil head Equipment manager and has two sophomore helpers
Trumpeter/Head Librarian! Logan
* Logan has a fucking gift he's always in tune like h o w
* He's always loud you, can always hear him play
* Thomas- "Whoa guys who hit that A?"/"Who missed that note a fumbled for a measure?"
* The whole ass trumpet section- "LOGAN"
* Logan became assistant librarian as a sophomore
* He convinced the head librarian and Thomas to let him redo the library and he went wild
* Gets pissy went people keep losing music "God damn it Rebecca I got you a copy of this yesterday."
* The freshman make Virgil/Roman or (usually) Patton go get music for them because Logan scares them shitless
* His flip folder is so organized, he always can get to the right song within ten seconds flat
* Always on step. A l w a y s.
* Like everyone checks his feet to see if they're on step; the band has a conspiracy that Logan is a robot- because its impossible to be that onstep 24/7
* Plays French horn for concert
* He would play trumpet for concert but there's a single French horn and Thomas needs a section
* For districts, he dual auditions on both instruments
* He's better at trumpet but since there's like five French horns he makes it on French horn every year, made regions Junior year
* Spends most of band camp in the library because 1) lets get all the music we'll ever need copied and 2) air conditioning
* The best at Music Theory
* Only wears his Letterman at festivals, he claims its so the others can find him but it's really because he's smug. Also has track on it because Lo’s a firm believer that exercise is good for your brain
* Wants to study the effects of music on the human brain
* As senior, he runs the library and has a junior and sophomore helper
Percussionist/ Drum major! Patton
* Everyone loves Patton; he's the nicest drum major they've ever had
* The freshman all flock to him
* Walks around to all the sections, offering any help he can
* Always carries water around in case someone needs it, especially during parades
* Once, someone passed out during Band Camp due to dehydration. Patton angrily lectured the entire band about the importance if drinking water. There was a PowerPoint involved.
* Patton pep talks the band before every performance
* Before becoming drum major, Patton played snare drum for marching
* You bet your bottom dollar that he had light-up drumsticks (they exist I promise)
* He wrote a cadence sophomore year, the percussion section performs it all the time
* Has a journal filled with music-related puns
* Sometimes lets Roman glitter his face, the flute section has highkey adopted Patton as an honorary member
* For concert, Patron plays Mallets
* He also plays violin
* He also dual auditions for districts on violin and mallets
* Makes regional band on mallets, and all-state orchestra on violin
* His violin case has stickers all over it. Right near the handle is a crown, a lightning bolt, a book and a heart sticker- it reminds him of his friends all eases his nerves before auditions
* Has a scrapbook of all is band memories, he started it in freshman year
* Wears his Letterman at games- it's a size to big (he ordered it that way on purpose), because it's really warm
* Wants to become a composer
* Currently as a senior, head drum major with an assistant who's a junior. I really just love drum major Patton let me have this
Band Director! Thomas
* 10/10 stressed
* It's his fifth year directing the school's band
* Honestly he loves the boys
* They're probably his most talented players
* HE JUST WISHES THEY STOPPED GIVING HIM HEART ATTACKS ON A DAILY BASIS

DESTINATION WEDDING ON THE BEACH
Amid what feels like a long virus winter, it’s dependably a treat to dream of summer days at the shoreline.and Aaron chose to have a goal wedding for their They had a little and close festival, which expanded both when the service itself. They held a mixed drink bar night out, practice supper and a shoreline party post wedding. Doesn’t everything sound simply fantastic?
Tumblr media
Their function was sentimental, with perspectives on the ocean and a lovely passage hung in texture and blooms for their setting. They at that point held their gathering outside alongside the pool, before firecrackers finished the nights occasions. I cherish such a large number of the bohemian contacts, with greenery utilized all through; think wreaths, tall highlight courses of action and seat backs.
I am truly adoring their outfit decisions. Anni picked Tara by WWW faves, Grace Loves Lace, which looked so excellent on her. In the interim Aaron plumped for a blue material suit for a smart style. You are simply going to adore their post wedding shoot by Lighthouse Photography, the pictures are so marvelous. Much gratitude goes to both their picture takers and their wedding organizer Inspired Moments for offering these astounding pictures to us.

THE PROPOSAL
Tumblr media
Aaron: 3 years prior I saw Anni strolling in the city while going by the café of my companion Michele. Same story each morning! I advised my companion that we have to figure out how to converse with her. I was resolved that she was the lady I will wed one day. Obviously we figured out how to contact her. As Anni was hurrying each day to work, we halted her, by holding a cappuccino (like the manner in which you serve water to sprinters at a long distance race). She got it and said that she will return to pay for it, amid her meal break.
Obviously who spend his entire evening sitting tight for Anni to return and she did. after 2,5 years I proposed to her on Easter Sunday. I made a heart shape with candles and set the ring inside the heart. I got down on my knees and advised her, that I needed to impart whatever remains of my life to her and inquired as to whether she needs to wed me. She said yes and we both realized we needed to get married the up and coming summer. On Easter supper we declared to our family that we are getting hitched and my sibling thought of getting hitched in wonderful Greece.

THE VISION
From the earliest starting point we needed a whimsical shoreline wedding, with some boho components however yet exquisite. The greater part of our visitors would head out far to Kavala so we needed them to have a decent, loosened up time to appreciate wonderful Greece and no more. We were both longing for a shoreline service with a delightful curve by the ocean and our visitors sitting with their toes in the sand.
Us that our wedding will be about positive vibes, fun and having a ball.

THE PLANNING PROCESS
Tumblr media
Since we had just a half year left for the whole arranging procedure we realized we required direction en route. It’s difficult to design a wedding abroad and hardest in such a brief span. That is the reason we will be always thankful to Inspired Moments. There was such a decent association between us, Anneta is a mind blowing wedding organizer and an overly flawless soul. We could completely believe her and she was continually tuning in to what we were imagining and raising far better proposals that we really adored. She acquainted us with the best wedding experts and give us an exceptionally close thought of what our wedding will closely resemble, along these lines was anything but difficult to imagine our day and choose the best fit to our identity and spending plan. We made a trip to Kavala 10 weeks before our wedding to encounter all wedding arranging practices: From hair and make-up preliminaries, sustenance tasting, flower and stylistic layout testing to the littlest subtleties. After that we felt exceptionally certain that everything will be completely ideal for our big day. We returned to Kavala right around seven days before the wedding and gratitude to great association and arranging we had the situation taken care of and we were sufficiently fortunate to make the most of our days with family and companions precisely as we needed it.

THE FLOWERS
Every single decorative layout consolidated redden roses, white hydrangeas and green eucalyptus. I adored my bunch and our highlights with tall decorative designs and our charming seating show with greenery wreaths. The bridesmaids wore green filler’s wrist corsages and my botanical headpiece was produced using wax blossom and green filler’s.

THE DETAILS and DÉCOR
Tumblr media
We chose our fundamental wedding shading to be become flushed, we needed normally exquisite hues and material. Our wedding solicitations were fixed with silk become flushed lace and ivory wax dependent on the shading plan and was the primary thing to grasp envisioning our taste, insignificant yet fine looking. We adored all the little subtleties in design: the little wooden signs we made for the wedding function and setting, the vellum paper placecards, the support box fixed with strip and wax, the wreath seating show, the children table with painting units, our seat botanical festoons and the craftsmanship de la table components.

THE READINGS and MUSIC
Tumblr media
The function was determined to the shoreline with a lovely curve disregarding the ocean. Our visitors were situated for the shoreline function and keeping in mind that they were sitting tight for Anni to land by pontoon, they were tuning in to established artful culminations by a violin player. We organized the service hour on dusk time so as to be additional mysterious. Trading promises under the redden shading sky. It was an exceptionally enthusiastic minute for the two of us and we are amazingly cheerful that we made it by our family and closest companions.

BRIDESMAIDS
The bridesmaids have chosen to pick light pink and become flushed hues for their outfits to oblige shading plan of the wedding.
Excellence
I needed a basic haircut with shoreline waves and a sentimental botanical wreath.
Giannis from Jean Pierre Haute Coiffure is such a capable beautician, we’ve just attempted one haircut and I knew this was it.
Toward the starting I figured I will do my own make-up in light of the fact that I’ve had a few preliminaries for different events and have never enjoyed it. It was our wedding organizer that persuaded me to have something like one preliminary and proposed Chrysa an incredibly skilled make up craftsman and obviously I ’ve altered my opinion. Chrysa made a characteristic yet rich make-up, I really cherished and felt delightful.

When we settled our choice to get hitched in Greece, the possibility of a blue line suit promptly rung a bell. I needed the suit to be light and agreeable.
After a smidgen of research I found a brand called SUITSUPPLY where you can tweak and structure your own one of a kind wedding suit.
I realized I needed a light, easy complimenting dress to oblige the shoreline scene.
I set up a few arrangements at nearby marriage shops yet couldn’t discover what I was searching for. I requested a mermaid dress which I didn’t love and when it arrived it was in a wrong size and wasn’t fitting in any way.
Perhaps it was intended to be, on the grounds that that was exactly when I ran over the Grace Loves Lace Tara outfit. I requested it on the web and when it arrived I realized it immediately this was the one.

Piano lessons are a doorway to a world of musical expression, cognitive development, and personal fulfillment. Whether you are a child taking your first steps in music, an adult returning to a childhood passion, or someone looking to pick up a new skill, piano lessons offer endless opportunities for growth and enjoyment. Here’s a look into the trans formative journey that piano lessons provide.
The Foundations: Starting with the Basics
Embarking on the path of piano learning begins with understanding the instrument and its fundamentals. Initial lessons focus on familiarizing students with the keyboard layout, proper hand positioning, and basic music theory.
Essential Skills:
Keyboard Familiarity: Knowing the names and positions of the keys, understanding octaves, and recognizing middle C.
Hand Positioning: Learning the correct way to place fingers on the keys to play efficiently and avoid strain.
Reading Music: Introduction to reading sheet music, including notes, rhythms, and dynamics.
Building Technique and Musicianship
As students progress, piano lessons delve deeper into developing technical skills and musicality. This stage involves more complex pieces, scales, arpeggios, and an understanding of musical expressions and styles.
Intermediate Skills:
Scales and Arpeggios: Practicing these builds finger strength, agility, and understanding of key signatures.
Sight Reading: Enhancing the ability to read and play a piece of music for the first time.
Expressive Playing: Learning about dynamics, phrasing, and articulation to bring emotion and character to music.
Exploring Repertoire and Styles
Diverse musical repertoire and styles enrich the learning experience and keep students engaged. Whether it’s classical, jazz, pop, or any other genre, exploring different types of music broadens a pianist’s horizons.
Expanding Repertoire:Classical Pieces: From Bach and Beethoven to Chopin and Debussy, classical music provides a solid foundation and technical challenge.
Modern Music: Playing contemporary pieces, film scores, and pop songs makes learning fun and relevant.
Jazz and Improvisation: Introducing jazz chords, scales, and improvisation can open new avenues for creative expression.
Performance and Confidence
Performing is a crucial part of musical education. It builds confidence, hones performance skills, and provides a sense of achievement. Piano lessons often include opportunities to perform in recitals, competitions, or informal gatherings.
Performance Skills:
Stage Presence: Learning how to present oneself confidently on stage.
Overcoming Stage Fright: Techniques to manage nervousness and perform under pressure.
