I've played Triangle Strategy and comparing Gustadolph and the religious guy (forgot the name and too lazy too look it up) to Edelgard and Rhea is a strawman. I should also preface that I've only played the game once and did Frederica's ending, so I know much more about Gusty than the religious guy (the latter is mostly spoilers). Gustadolph is honestly borderline boring because he is not humanized at all. Gustadolph is basically just the aloof calculating 90s anime villain who never does anything you wouldn't expect from him. He fills his narrative role competently but there's absolutely nothing about him to get invested in. He's like a robot in human flesh who was programmed to be a 90s anime villain. Rhea and Edelgard are heavily humanized and Edelgard has also relationships of various flavors with various people because she is a playable FE characters. TS's writing does the bare minimum for Gusty, I was honestly waiting for him to become even slightly interesting but he never does. Gustadolph and the other dude not getting defended is not a giant gotcha. The writing never tries to make you care about him. There are plenty of hot male villains who get apologists tying themselves into pretzels excusing them. Like Lotor from VLD to name one example, and even Sephiroth from FF7 has had some apologists over the many years since the game came out. What is there about Gustadolph to care about? He's not funny, his relationships with the cast are developed to the bare minimum to serve the plot or the development of other characters, if he has a tragic backstory I have yet to see it but I reckon it isn't there, there isn't a single person he cares about only power, he doesn't have any character flaws that make him look uncool (being perpetually cool and aloof can really tank a character if the rest is as bland as with Gusty) and even his quest for power is portrayed as blandly as possible, it really is only a character trait to serve the plot rather than something to be explored on its own merit. Of course TS players don't give a fuck. The writers don't want them to. Meanwhile it's very clear that the 3H writers want you to care about Edelgard and Rhea.
