Short A.N.I.M. Hiatus

Just so y’all know, I, the only full-time employee of A.N.I.M., will be on vacation/hiatus from about now (April 7th, 2025) until the last week of April, so there will be very few new posts and very little progress on our various projects until then, but I will be setting the queue to keep cycling through old posts and reblogs.

As for where everything’s at right now:

Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy (Beta)

Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy is being continually polished and tweaked based on massive amounts of player feedback, but editing progress is still very slow due to our editor dealing with lots of difficult life stuff. We are really hoping to continue with regular, speedy editing progress in May.

At least 16 dedicated Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy adventure modules are currently in development, 2 of which are being developed in-house by A.N.I.M. and the rest are fan creations from the game jam we ran last month. Within a few months everyone can finally stop relying on Call of Cthulhu and Delta Green modules.

Eureka: The Fanservice Files (Beta)

This was an unexpected hit and a big part of the reason we’re doing so relatively well on money this month (still not in the clear though). It made more money in the first 4 hours than Eureka Adventure Modules Vol. 1 has in 65 days. For this reason I have decided to definitely continue work on it as a legitimate expansion. Patreon subscribers have already gotten an updated version last week, and can expect an even more updated version to come in May. These updates will come to the general public at the same time as the next public beta update for Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy.

And also because this was such a big hit, I have decided to try to always have a reserve expansion in my back pocket, which I’m calling a “ripcord expansion” to reference its short and emergency nature. These expansions will be about the same length as The Fanservice Files and include content that fits with the canon and themes of the main rulebook, but is just a little bit sillier or otherwise different in tone. These are “emergency” releases because I’m keeping them on the shelf in an outline stage until it starts to look like we’re in serious danger of not meeting our income quota, then quickly finishing them up for a surprise release and some quick money.

The next one, to finished up and released when-needed, is called Eureka: The XXX-Files.

Silk & Dagger: A Sensible Drow RPG (Alpha)

We are just getting through the second round of playtesting for Silk & Dagger and, as is to be expected for an alpha, it’s looking rough. Despite it actually being perfectly reasonable to do so, especially with how much we need the money, I still can’t help but feel a tinge of embarrassment at showing one of my games to the public in such a messy state. I take game design very seriously and hold RPGs to a very high standard. At least y’all and I both can take comfort in the fact that this is the worst Silk & Dagger will ever be, and it’s only up hill from here. (And it’s still pretty good already)

I’m writing down all the feedback so I can reference it when I bring Silk & Dagger back to the front burner after I get Death Bed: A Souls-like RPG into the barest minimum of a playable state.

Death Bed: A Souls-like RPG (Pre-Alpha)

What started out as a “simple” “OSR” dungeon-crawler which aimed to represent the combat of Dark Souls in a turn-based TTRPG format has ballooned into a project that will probably somewhere close to the scope of Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy. A harsh and brutal, but optimistic dungeon crawler with themes of disability, medieval culture, and medieval Christianity. It will also feature combat and other mechanics reminiscent of Dark Souls but translated into something that’s actually fun as a TTRPG. And I’m really autistic about medieval culture, medieval Christianity, game design, and swords, so you can expect this to be really good, once it’s finished.

Currently it’s looking like the game won’t be in even a remotely playtestable state until at least early May, and even at that stage it’ll just be a combat-simulator without any actual dungeon-crawling elements ready yet.

Financial Situation

We are currently at $558.08/$1,964.33 for the monthly income necessary to keep us afloat, and even though this actually puts us a little ahead for the month at the time of writing this, obviously I am very nervous about stepping away from the wheel for 2 weeks when we cut it so close every month, but if I keep pushing 35-70 hours a week every week without taking a few weeks off, I’ll probably die.

At the very least, members of our team appear on two different podcast episodes that will be releasing this April, so that should introduce us to some new audiences. One of those podcasts is @literalcatpod.

For my sake please continue to reblog our posts, play and talk about our games, and buy them and/or subscribe to the patreon in my absence. I need to be able to relax over the next two weeks without worrying about returning to a company that is woefully behind on its income quota with only one week left to fix that.

Song of the Day: Leonard Cohen - Suzanne

A fine song and even finer piece of poetry (it began life as a poem, published in 1966 as part of a collection titled Parasites of Heaven), Leonard Cohen's signature Suzanne remains one of the most well-regarded and widely-appreciated popular compositions never to crack the Top 40. Part autobiography, part religious allegory, it seems to mean something profound to almost everyone, even though its real meaning is, I've discovered, a matter of fierce debate. In completing my customary research for this entry, I encountered all sorts of interpretations, various writers peeling away layer upon layer of supposed substance, and honestly, I've never in my life had to wade through such a morass of pseudo-intellectual gobbledygook, while emerging none the wiser.

Maybe the self-anointed intelligentsia are making it more difficult than it needs to be. There’s certainly not a lot of allegorical sub-text to the first and final verses, which actually form a straightforward account of his relationship as a young man with one Suzanne Vaillancourt, née Verdal, a bohemian performance artist and blithe free spirit with whom Cohen became close in his years circulating among the various artistes of the Montreal cultural scene. She was, by all accounts, almost irresistibly alluring, and according to Cohen every man she met fell in love with her. Alas, she was married to a fellow artist, a man so attractive in his own right that apparently, every woman who met him fell in love too, and in his best moments, listening to his better angels, Cohen wasn’t about to do anything to insert himself between the two, even if she’d been amenable, which she wasn’t; he once told an interviewer that as a couple, they were inviolate, you just didn’t intrude into the kind of shared glory that they manifested. Not that he didn’t think about it, of course, c'mon, a guy couldn't help but at least toy with the idea, just in the abstract, but he satisfied himself with an entirely platonic, albeit exquisitely intimate, relationship that never developed into anything untoward. This is from an interview conducted by Kate Saunders of the BBC:

Saunders: The song is about the meeting of spirits. It’s a very intimate lyric, very, very intimate.

Suzanne: This is it.

Saunders: It seems very sad that the spirits moved apart.

Suzanne: Yes, I agree and I believe it’s material forces at hand that do this to many the greatest of lovers (laughs).

Saunders: So would you say in a way, in the spiritual sense, you were great lovers at some level?

Suzanne: Oh yes, yes, I don’t hesitate to speak of this, absolutely. As I say, you can glance at a person and that moment is eternal and it’s the deepest of touches and that’s what we’d shared, Leonard and I, I believe.

It was beautiful as it was, and it was enough. Well, mainly it was enough. As Suzanne remembered later, once when he was visiting Montreal, I saw him briefly in a hotel and it was a very, very wonderful, happy moment because he was on his way to becoming the great success he is. And the moment arose that we could have a moment together intimately, and I declined. Over the years, there don’t seem to have been a lot of women who said no to Cohen. But Suzanne didn't want to spoil their special bond.

So this is entirely based in reality, an honest account of a precious moment set to poetry in which no poetic licence is taken:

Suzanne takes you down to a place by the river You can hear the boats go by, you can spend the night forever And you know that she's half crazy, and that's why you want to be there And she feeds you tea and oranges that come all the way from China And just when you want to tell her that you have no love to give her She gets you on her wavelength, and lets the river answer That you've always been her lover

And you want to travel with her And you want to travel blind And you think you'll maybe trust her For she's touched your perfect body with her mind

Suzanne really did have a place down by the St. Lawrence River, where the two used to meet and watch the ships go by. She really did serve him mandarin oranges and exotic, orange-flavoured tea from somewhere in the far east. The poem is practically a photograph.

Saunders: When you heard the song as opposed to hearing the poem, did you instantly think, that’s me?

Suzanne: Oh yes, definitely. That was me. That is me still, yes...

Saunders: Could you describe one of the typical evenings that you spent with Leonard Cohen at the time the song was written?

Suzanne: Oh yes. I would always light a candle and serve tea and it would be quiet for several minutes, then we would speak. And I would speak about life and poetry and we’d share ideas.

Saunders: So it really was the tea and oranges that are in the song?

Suzanne: Very definitely, very definitely, and the candle, who I named Anastasia, the flame of the candle was Anastasia to me. Don’t ask me why. It just was a spiritual moment that I had with the lighting of the candle. And I may or may not have spoken to Leonard about, you know I did pray to Christ, to Jesus Christ and to St. Joan at the time, and still do.

Saunders: And that was something you shared, both of you?

Suzanne: Yes, and I guess he retained that.

Thus the subsequent lines about Jesus, so moving and in a sense enigmatic, written, as they were, by a Jewish artist, would appear to have everything to do with the deep spirituality of his relationship with Suzanne, Cohen seeming to equate reverence for the divine with his intense artistic and aesthetic appreciation of his saintly Lady of the Harbour. Black-hearted stone-atheist I may be, but I've always been especially touched by this mournful depiction of a Saviour coming to realize, as he suffers on the cross, that his charges can't be saved, not, anyway, until it's too late to make a difference:

And Jesus was a sailor when He walked upon the water And He spent a long time watching from a lonely wooden tower And when He knew for certain only drowning men could see Him He said all men shall be sailors then until the sea shall free them But He himself was broken long before the sky would open Forsaken almost human, He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone

Only drowning men could see him; it's almost a corollary of the old saying that there aren't any atheists in foxholes, contending that there aren't any believers outside of them, either. In Cohen's telling, people only turn to God when they're in extremis. Otherwise, impliedly, they live meaningless, empty lives devoid of understanding, never attaining the olympian perspective afforded by the high plateau upon which he used to commune with lovely, beloved Suzanne, the deep, captivating woman in the Salvation Army hand-me-downs who saw beauty in the mundane, knew how to find the treasures amid the uncollected refuse, and held the mirror through which Cohen saw himself through her eyes.

3月27日発売の「＋DESIGNING vol.57」掲載の、先端コンテンツのいまを読み解く「xxxのデザインをカガクする」コーナーにて、「イラストのデザインをカガクする」としてインタビュー記事が掲載されています。 過去の作例と併せて、私がどのようにして今の仕事をするに至ったか、何を意識して活動を続けているかをお話しさせていただきました。

In the “+DESIGNING vol.57” issue published on March 27, an interview article titled “To Kagaku the Design of Illustrations” appears in the “xxx Designing” corner, which is a section for reading and understanding cutting-edge content nowadays. I talked about how I came to do what I do now and what I keep in mind in my activities, along with examples of my past work.

More Favorite Tools 01 by Gayle San 2001 Techno / Tribal Techno

My goodness, I have such a fuckin' glorious heater for you all today 🤩. Introducing More Favorite Tools 01, a throbbing clinic in highly rhythmic late 90s-early 2000s techno that was delivered by the great Gayle San to launch a successor series to Austrian dance label XXX Records' also prolific My Favorite Tools series. A native of Singapore, Gayle San managed to establish herself as both a veteran DJ and producer after moving to London in 1990 and racking up some residencies there.

So here she is with a blistering y2k-era set, lining up a whole slew of bone-rattling, floor-stomping bangers that range from the sci-fi dystopic to the toweringly tribal. There are really so many different strains of techno that are out there, but the common throughline that Gayle honed in on here is the super heavy and rhythmically dense kind; there's basically a matryoshka doll of rhythm in every single one of these selections here.

So let's highlight a couple crowning pieces on this thing. My favorite among favorites is actually a tune that I posted about recently in a write-up of another techno mix from 2001 called Audiophonic 5, by Christian Weber. This is Swedish techno wizard Adam Beyer's remix of UK workhorse Ben Sims' "Manipulated," a stunning Latin-tribal ground-shaker that surrounds vocal and horn samples from Cuban singer Albita's "Ta Bueno Ya" with a miasmic and pandemonious cavalry of all sorts of percussion. Such overwhelming, thooming-and-booming bliss in this one; an absolute all-timer as far as I'm concerned 👍.

And then there's Technasia's house-of-mirrors joint, "Cyclone," which leads with these frantically dissonant, vampiric synth stabs, and peaks whenever the four-on-the-floor kickdrums and clanging hi-hats run in tandem with those nutty stabs. A bit of satisfyingly freaky techno-horror there 😌.

So run this mix back-to-back with Misstress Barbara's similarly crafted Relentless Beats Vol. 1 and you'll be having yourself over two hours of mercilessly mashing techno madness from 2001, with all of it delivered by two of the genre's greatest DJs at the time, who both happen to be women as well, which is also a rarity for this genre in and of itself!

lol yeah I figured when I went to watch the vid & read the article 😅 off said years ago that he wanted to retire at 45 so it wasn't a surprise at all, but him wanting to slow down by 35 makes sense too. I mean, the guy is & has been overworked for a decade, I don't know how he does it, I both admire him & also feel bad for him for that 😅
