how do i explain to people that my first approach to omegaverse was in 2016 through a voltron fanfiction, but back then i had no idea what volton was. reading the fic it seemed to be about aliens and sci fi stuff i just assumed the omegaverse part was canonical. like a real piece of lore from the serie. so i went and streamed voltron and you can imagine my confusion.

Klance oneshot idea
A series of moments showing lance slowly fall for Keith
* While rescuing Shiro on Earth, “I know that mullet anywhere!” (Annoyed and angry)
* Looking for Keith in a party, “I’d know that mullet anywhere” (rolls his eyes and points to Keith)
* Picking him out in a crowd of Galra, “I’d know that mullet anywhere” (whispers to himself while looking at Keith through his scope)
* Looking for Keith in prisoner cells through cameras Pidge hacked, “there! I’d know that mullet anywhere!” (Points excitedly at the screen)
* Keith comes back from the space whale, “I’d know that mullet anywhere.” (Lovingly caresses Keith’s face and leans in to kiss him)
*free to anyone, as long as I am credited*

The thought of Keith just indulging Lance in whatever argument he decides to start with the other is just heart warming to me.
Lance wants to argue about Keith's favourite movie being shit. Keith glady argues back even when he doesn't even care about the subject, only doing so because Lance always has a range of emotions that he shows when agitated, which he rarely is unless he's around Keith, so it makes Keith feel special knowing he only gets to be apart of this side of Lance. Hence why there rivalry lasted for so long.

It was the final stretch.
I snuck out again. Doing it in the evening would mean that someone would probably catch me but at night it's much easier. If the rest of the team saw me now, I'd probably get scolded but I couldn't help myself. Hunk finally baked some edible cookies!
I grabbed a plate from the nearest shelf and helped myself to a generous amount, then rearranged the cookies that had fallen out of formation back into a pyramid. This way, no one noticed when one or two floors disappeared.
As a medical student, or rather a former student, because on Earth I've probably already been kicked out of school, I always tell my team to eat healthily. I am quite aware of the effects of overeating at night and too many sweets but everyone has smaller or larger deviations. Mine gradually started to increase after Hunk got a new recipe for blueberry cookies.
When we tasted them for the first time, I was skeptical because of their blue color. We chose Coran as the tester because no one else wanted to poison themselves. However, it turned out that we had avoided failure. They tasted like cocoa.
Since then, Hunk has been baking them almost all the time and I've been stealing them on the sly. It quickly turned out that paladins had a habit of getting up often in the middle of the night. At first I ate in the living room and almost got caught when Pidge walked by. However, I managed to find a solution. My place for a snack was the rather narrow roof, which was accessed through a window on the top floor of the castle. Perhaps someone would be able to spot me during the day but at night it was virtually impossible.
I headed there too, thinking only that in a moment I would inhale that cocoa scent again. I crossed the hall, opened the window, and then placed the plate on the tiny windowsill. I had both legs out and was just about to start eating when it turned out I wasn't alone.
Keith was now sitting in my usual seat with wide eyes. He looked ready to jump but visibly relaxed when he saw it was just me.
Well, great.
So I did the only right thing that could be done in such a situation.
— Cookie?
— Excuse me? — He asked.
— I asked if you wanted a cookie. — I sat down and offered him a plate. — Just don't betray to others because I won't have a life.
He ate it, then reached for another one.
We never got along very well, partly because we didn't know each other before I joined the team. It's true that I didn't argue with him like Lance but he had such a heavy personality that I preferred spending time with Hunk or Allura. He always seemed quite cold to me but I admired his skills and courage because he certainly had plenty of that.
The silence was quite uncomfortable, so I decided to break it.
— Nice sky.
No response from Mr. Silent.
It was beautiful. A shade of navy blue completely different than the one on Earth. Constellations unlike any I've seen. Everything was different here. The thought always brought a momentary feeling of nostalgia and longing for my family but I was used to it by now. It hasn't wanted to leave me since I got here.
— Sooo... you came to think? — I said with my mouth full.
— You could say that — he muttered.
What an elaborate statement.
— I came to eat without anyone noticing. I glanced at him. — But it didn't work out as you can see. — What are you thinking about?
I didn't receive any response.
Keith started to stand up but I grabbed his sleeve.
— It's a bit inelegant of you to leave me in the middle of a conversation now.
If this could even be called a conversation...
— Something will attack me here at night when it smells food if I stay alone. — I stuffed the cookie into myself with my free hand. — If you want, we can sit in silence — I added.
I saw his hesitation but he finally sat back down after the last sentence.
I wanted to keep my word, I really wanted to. The problem, however, was the talkativeness. Everyone around me knew perfectly well that I was loud and ubiquitous. I also had trouble keeping my mouth shut. Keith and I were basically opposites, which was one of the reasons we had limited contact.
In short, I could be irritating. No wonder I couldn't last more than a few minutes.
— If you don't want to say what you're thinking, don't say it — I started. — But if you change your mind, you know  — I stabbed him in the arm — you can vent.
— Do I look like someone who wants to talk?
No, you look like an irritated bastard.
— No but you look like someone who needs it. You know, as a pseudo-doctor on this team, I also have to take care of your mental health. I think it's just as important as physical one.
His expression softened slightly. He was clearly wondering whether he should share with me what was on his mind.
The silence grew.
This is how my career as a psychologist dies prematurely.
I actually could have given up but I felt like I wanted to help. Kind of like when I was quite little and put plasters on literally all the kids in my neighbourhood who had bad knees. This feeling turned into a passion — the desire to professionally care for others. I didn't have the opportunity to graduate because I was in the middle of another galaxy but I did my best. I tried to use everything I had at hand to help those who were saving planets and races that we had never known about before.
— It's about my leadership — he began, so quietly that I could barely hear him. — I feel bad about it. Everyone is counting on me, they want me to give them orders but I have the impression that whatever I do, wherever I step, will be wrong. I'm not even sure how to get along with you. After I came back to the team, everyone looks at me differently. I'm not like Shiro. My only hope is to find him and bring him back but I don't even know where to start looking for him.
I'm out of cookies.
— It's obvious — I felt his eyes on me — that you're not Shiro. I'm sure we'll find him but it will take some time. You shouldn't try to replace him because each of you is different — I started. — It'll take you a while to get used to your new role but you're on the right track. Maybe try spending some time with the team? We haven't known each other for very long but I'm not blind. Some people really miss you, Keith. Don't run away from them, try to talk to them, eat some cookies and everything will be fine. — I stood up, took my plate and headed to the window.
It's gonna be alright — the cliché I may have tried to say to myself a lot too but what choice did I have? What else could I tell him?
— [Reader]?
— Hmmm? — I stuck my head out.
— Thank you.
— No problem but it was Hunk who baked them — I said, smiling to myself and then started walking down the dark corridor.
Keith will make a good leader but I might still make a good doctor when I get back to Earth. I should just cut down on the cookies...

When Maria McClain first holds Lance in her arms, she feels a resurgence of overwhelming affection consume her. It’s nothing new to Maria. She’s had many other children— four— and now, cradling Lance, she knows she is capable. She knows she can handle being his mother, and just how lucky she is. With tears brimming in her eyes, she places a kiss to his forehead.
“You are going to be so, so good,” she whispers. Lance, still and sleeping, remains unaware of her words.
Maria realizes: here is her heart, living outside of her body. She prays.
Later, when Lance is six and starting school, Maria worries. He’s an unusual boy. He likes to spend endless time at the beach and marveling over the stars, but it has taken longer for him to learn things such as speaking. She hopes desperately that he won’t struggle in school and be made fun of, but knows she can’t control that.
“Mama!” a shrill voice calls from the door. Maria places the last Tupperware of rice in his lunch box and heads over to where Lance is standing, hand eagerly twisting the doorknob back and forth.
“Have a good day in school, Lancito.” She plants a kiss on his forehead as she shoves his lunch box in his backpack. “Make sure you stay close to Rachel and walk with her, you don’t want to get lost.”
“I will, I will,” Lance huffs. Finally, Maria opens the door, and Lance bursts out to run over where Rachel and Veronica stand with neighborhood friends. As Maria waves him off, she presses a hand over her chest, soothing the knot left behind by his absence.
She looks around an empty house, all the pieces of her heart out in the world. Maria sighs, closing the door and turning to get her gardening tools.
Lance is 13 when he first discovers the Galaxy Garrison. He is not the best student, prone to distraction by the smallest things, but he becomes determined in a way Maria hasn’t seen from him yet.
However, Maria also does research on this program. She finds out it is a military program and that her son will be enlisted to fight on the battlefield.
She begins to worry again, that familiar ache in her heart. Maria walks to Lance’s door and knocks gently. “Lance?”
“Come in!” Maria walks in to find him taping up a poster to his wall. He shares the room with Luis, who isn’t there, the only sign of him a collection of superhero memorabilia on the right side of the room.
Lance’s side had glowing star decals, an empty fish tank, and a big collection of fantasy books.
Now, above Lance’s bed, there is a poster of a commanding officer from the Galaxy Garrison. Lance catches her staring and turns bright red.
“He’s so cool, Mama!” Lance explains. “And he is gonna go to space, just like I want to. I might even get to meet him if I go.” Maria chuckles softly.
“You’re working very hard to get in,” she reassures him, going to place a hand on her shoulder. “Stubborn boy as you are.” He snorts at her teasing and ducks away from her ruffling his hair.
“I’m gonna do it. I know it.” Lance looks up at the poster with wide, open eyes, and Maria can’t help but notice how small he is in comparison to this looming figure in a space suit. “I’m going to be a hero.”
Maria has heard many stories of heroes. She has read them, has met them, has lost them. She recalls her brother, lost to war.
She placed a gentle hand on Lance’s shoulder, sitting down next to him on his bed.
“I will never stop you from becoming who you want to be, mi corazón,” she tells him seriously. He looks deeply into her eyes, eyes they share, deep brown and curious. “But you must promise me, if you go here, you will keep my heart safe. Heroes do not remain heroes in life very often.” She presses her remaining hand from her heart to his, an invisible connection.
“Do you understand?”
“Of course, Mama.”
He does not understand. He is only 13, young and with no obligations, but speaking the words aloud brings a comfort to her. So she smiles, and when Lance gets into the program months later, they celebrate with a going away party.
Then—
Then.
Lance is 17 when she receives a call. She does not remember much of that day. Brief snatches, at most.
Falling to her knees in the kitchen, the phone breaking as it landed beside her.
Her hands coming up to her heart, her shoulders trembling. Maria’s husband rushed in, going down to hold her, trying to understand why she was—
A pause. Silence rang in her ears like a bell tolling.
She tilted her head back and screamed. The sound was broken. It was pain incarnate.
Her son, her heart.
How could she ever stand again?
The years begin to pass by in a blur. She has other children to take care of. They don’t miss the hollowness that lingers in her eyes, the way she ages but her eyes continue to linger on an empty doorway. She busies herself with her garden.
She plants a lamprocapnos and she tends to it with care.
She tries not to linger on regret, her husband reassuring her that she did everything right, that she is a good mother and wife. In their grief, they cling to each other. She listens to his pulse with an ear over his chest.
The bad days are hard, and she needs reminding that they pass.
They do.
Sometime when Lance would be 21, Maria hears a knock on the door. She stands and heads over, expecting a package or a neighbor. She freezes. Tall and scarred and broader, but still her baby, Lance stands in the door with a wide smile and eyes instantly brimming with tears.
“Mama, I’m home,” he whispers.
Maria opens her arms, her shock preventing her from speaking. He sinks into them in a way all too familiar and yet also new and strange, this new version of her son.
“I did it,” he says. “I became a hero, Mama. I saved the universe.”
“Oh, mi corazón,” Maria finally manages, her voice broken again. “You never needed to be a hero for me to love you.”
They stay that way for a long, long time.
“I have someone I need you to meet, Mama. I think he’s my heart.”
And, oh, she understands.
“Invite him for dinner,” she agrees, holding hers in her arms like a lifeline.

klancing first light by hozier
"You spoke some quick new music that went so far to soothe the soul"
Lance about Keith shortly after they got together. They're laying on Keith's bed together and talking about how long they were pining for each other. Keith admits he's been pining for Lance for over a year at this point because he realized the phenomenon that is Lance McClain once they were on the castle for a few weeks. He was so impressed by that bubble of light in the form of a boy with soft brown skin and brown eyes, who managed to take this light with him wherever he went. Keith, broody mcEmo, never managed that and was so impressed by it. He tells Lance about his impression of him and how quickly he realized he couldn't look away from that light in shape of a boy. Lance, who was chosen by blue but never FELT chosen by blue - or anyone for that matter - starts crying because this is the first time he feels like the first option for someone. He's the first choice and it soothes the part deep inside of his soul that was so scared to end up alone.
"Some part of me must've died the first time you called me baby"
The first time Lance calls Keith "mine", Keith instinctually dislikes it. He's not a thing to be owned, he's not something to be claimed "Lance's", hes not someone's. Because they've been together a while and they can read each other like a book most of the time, Lance realizes he must've said something wrong and files that in his brain under "need to talk about later".
The next evening, when they've returned to Lance's room after dinner, Lance carefully asks what he did wrong. Keith is quick to assure him that he did nothing wrong. After some probing and poking from Lance he admits that he disliked the possessive undertone. Lance realizes how Keith understood it and was quick to clarify: "I didn't mean 'mine' like a possesion. I meant 'mine' like home, like my favorite beach, like cuba. Nothing i own or even can own. You're mine like I care about you and therefore I care for you. Mine in the same way I pick up trash at my favorite beach, in the same way I notice that new shop on my street, mine like belonging to me but never ever mine to keep."
Keith looks at him like a deer in the headlights and, not knowing what to say, suddenly throws his arms around the lanky boy sitting across from him. Surprised by the impact, Lance falls on his back and gets squished between his boyfriend and the pillows.
happy ending they kiss

Here’s a quick oneshot based off of the idea that Shiro just decided to ignore all the times Keith did something alien like and decided it was too much work.
-
It was a quiet day on the Castle Of Lions. Pidge and Hunk were playing some game they had hooked up in the lounge. Coran and Allura were locked in a very intense staring contest. Keith and Lance were sitting on the floor painting their nails. And Shiro was relaxing on the couch with a cup of “not quite tea.” Everything was peaceful, until Lance had to ruin it.
“Ya know, Keith. It’s kinda weird that you’re half Galra, you look completely human!”
“Yeah,” Pidge chimed in, still focusing on kicking Hunk’s ass in some Mario Kart ripoff.
“It’s a bit strange with how Galra traits seem to be passed down, I think you’d be purple or something.”
“I wouldn't say I look fully human.” Keith grumbled as he waited for the black nail polish to dry on his thumb. “My canine teeth are pretty pointy.”
“Yeah, but that’s normal weird stuff! Shit like that just happens sometimes!” Lance complained loudly.
“I don’t think you guys know what you’re talking about. When I first met him I thought I was losing my mind.” Shiro said, staring blankly at his lukewarm cup of tea.
“What the fuck does that even mean!” Lance threw his arms up in the air. “Did he turn purple or something!?”
“Not exactly,” Shiro glanced over at his brother, “Can I tell them?” “Yeah whatever, as long as they leave me alone about this after.”
“Scouts honor.” Lance put a hand over his heart.
“Uh man, you were never in the Boy Scouts.”
“Shut up Hunk! Kidding, love you dude.” Pidge adjusted their glasses, “tell us what?”
Shiro cleared his throat, “Back in the garrison, when we first met I could’ve sworn that his eyes changed when he got angry. Like his pupils looked like a cats” Shiro had set down his tea at this point and was waving his non-metal arm around for emphases. “I had to convince Matt to not write a research paper on him.”
Pidge snorted, “Yeah that sounds like Matt.”
“Um, I think we’re all missing an important point here. WHY DIDN’T YOU QUESTION ANY OF THIS!!!” Hunk questioned reasonably.
“Honestly I was really busy getting ready for the Kerberos mission, I just chalked it up to puberty and tried to keep him out of fights.” Shiro huffed, taking another sip of his tea. Keith rolled his eyes, “I wasn’t that bad.”
Shiro spat out his tea. “Not that bad?! Keith, one time you got in a fight lost a tooth, a permanent tooth. And it grew back in a day!” “To be fair I thought that was normal.”
“Why did I. End up with you as a brother!” “Shut up I’m a great brother.”
Shiro sighed, “One time when Keith was over for the holidays I heard something in the kitchen, when I went to see what it was I swore I say glowing eyes, turns out it was just Keith getting a snack.”
Lance bursted out laughing, “He’s like a weird cat!” Keith rolled his eyes again and added another layer of polish. “Cats' eyes dont glow jackass.” “Oh shut up!”
Pidge who was now very invested in the conversation and taking notes cracked their knuckles. “What else does he do? It could be helpful information.”
“Are we seriously doing this!” Keith mumbled, everyone opted to ignore him.
Pidge began scribbling furiously as Shiro listed things off.
“The whites of his eyes turn yellow, he growls, his fingernails grow and sharpen.”
“Holy shit!” Lance said in awe.
“I’m not done yet. He can jump really high, has great night vision, his hearing is super good. Am I missing anything Keith!”
“I Don't know, I don't really pay attention to this kind of stuff.”
Everyone collectively groaned.

klance oneshot, teen and up audiences
prompt: i could never hate you
Honestly, Lance hadn’t even been planning on stopping by the training room.
Really, he was only innocently making his way to the kitchens (with no intention of stealing Hunk’s dessert whatsoever…) and just… happened to hear a particularly pained groan coming from the door to the training room. Naturally, being a very caring and kind person by nature, Lance opened the door only to check, and just… ended up staying.
Completely normal. Nothing homosexual or weird going on at all.
Okay, who was he kidding, he was totally just here to ogle Keith.
But who could blame him! Sure, the paladin of the Red Lion could be pretty mopey, and broody, and Lance wasn’t even gonna start on the obvious anger issues. But in the training room, he almost seemed to let go, in a strange way.
It was like fighting came naturally to him. Like he was made for it. Keith brought his sword down on the drones like it was an art form, and Lance couldnt help but admire the fluidity and grace. The way his hair formed dark waves in the air, his movements almost like water. And yeah, he would admit, it was kind of creepy.
But his crush on the red paladin had been going on for a while, and while Lance had accepted it was never going to happen, it couldn’t hurt to indulge just a little, right?
(Boy, was he wrong.)
Lance was suddenly snapped out of waxing poetic about Keiths raven-dark hair when a loud voice echoed through the room.
«Training sequence over.»
Lance barely had time to think shit before Keith Kogane himself turned around and caught his eyes.
Lance could feel the blush creeping up his neck as the boy stared at him. He didn’t think he’d ever seen Keith look this caught off-guard (and that was saying something. Lance had seen him look completely unfazed after just having been shot at from what looked like a space-giraffe.)
The silence continued on for a short while, but for Lance it might as well have lasted a year. He couldnt’ imagine how dumb he must look, in his sweatpants and a blue shirt that was a little too tight around the shoulders, just standing in the doorway. Probably red as a tomato, too. Dios mio.
«Can i-« Keiths voice came out a little rough, so he cleared his throat. «can i help you? With anything?» The question seemed completely genuine, with no hint of sarcasm. Lance was still trying to come up with an excuse.
«Oh, pshh, no i was just on my way to art, and then i just heard- well, no, on my way to the kitchen, i mean you looked like art-« Keith was just staring at him, slack-faced. «Not like, like art in a pretty way, in a… totally horrible way, like a Picasso or something, ANYWAY-« Lance’s horribly failing explanation was interrupted by the softest question he had ever heard uttered from Keiths mouth, so quiet he wasn’t even sure he heard it.
«You were watching me?»
The question sounded so unsure Lance couldnt help but soften a bit himself.
«Yeah.»
Oh, wow, the floor here was really interesting. Lance had never noticed the way it was made up of hexagons before.
«Yeah, I was.»
Now it was Keith’s time to flush. And Lance was not prepared for the red tinge dusting across his cheekbones and painting the tips of his ears. Art.
«I’m, uh, I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable or anything. It was just, I…» Lance could feel his own heart beating, and wow, was that normal? Maybe he should take a trip to the healing pods after dying of embarrassment later.
«It was just nice to see you doing something that wasnt yelling at me, for once.» The words came out with a laugh, but really Lance couldnt feel less happy. Because it really had been.
Sometimes it felt like the only thing they did was fight. And it was fun, sure, but Lance wanted… other stuff, too.
He wanted Keith to laugh with him, the way he did with Hunk. Wanted to nerd over things like astrophysics or piloting together. Wanted to talk to him, really talk to him. Wanted to be able to look at Keith without feeling like he didn’t matter.
And suddenly there were tears pricking at his eyes. Mierde, how mortifying. Lance started walking out of the room trying to choke back that awful feeling in his throat.
«Sorry, I’m sorry, Keith, hahah,»
«Don’t say that.»
Lance stopped dead in his tracks.
«I- don’t say that.»
Keiths voice was quiet but decided. He sounded almost… angry. But not for the reasons he should be.
«Lance, i didn’t know you…» Keith looked at a loss for words. «I didnt realize you looked at me as anything other than your stupid rival, or whatever.» Keith looked almost bashful as he studies his shoes.
«I dont really hate you. I just… it seemed like you really hated me. And i was just playing along with it. So stupid…» Lance’s heart breaks a little, he thinks. How could he ever think- ever- that Lance had even the smallest bit of hate for this boy in his heart? Jealousy, sure. Irritation, hell yeah. But hate? If Keith only knew…
«I dont hate you, Keith. I could never hate you.»
Lance’s voice is softer than he intended it to be, and he winces at the implications of his words.
«No?» Keith breathes, and Lance feels it on his skin. When did they get so close? And when did Lances hand end up on Keiths shoulder?
«How could you even think that i- if you had any idea what i really-« Lances words fail him. If this boy thought even for a second that Lance hated him, he would just have to prove him wrong in the most foolproof way he knew how.
Keith gasped as their lips connected. His lips were warm, and lightly chapped, and it only lasted for a second, but it was easily the best kiss Lance had ever had. Because it was him.
It was Keith- arrogant, loyal, jealous, strong, scarred, brave, beautiful Keith. His Keith. Who he had just kissed.
Oh my god, Lance had just kissed Keith.
He immediately backed away, failing to notice the shocked blush on Keiths face. «Oh my- Dios mio, I am so sorry, lo siento rojo, I know you dont- I’m so sorry,»
Keiths hands fist in his sweater and Lance is sure he’s about to get sucker punched before-
«Will you stop saying that,» and Keith drags him down by his shirt and crushes their lips together.
It’s like fireworks. And theyre both inexperienced and the angle is slightly awkward, but Lance tilts his head just so and he sees stars. Keith kisses like he does everything else, white-hot and burning, and so full of passion its almost too much.
But not really. Never too much, as Lance’s hands find their way into that stupid mullet, as Keith gasps into his mouth and he presses his tongue to the seam of Lances mouth, and Lance is sure that if he opened his eyes right now everything would be on fire.
But unfortunately, humans do need oxygen to live, and Lance reluctantly breaks the kiss and lets his forehead fall to Keith’s.
«You don’t hate me,» Keith, red-lipped and pupils blown, almost whispers against his cheek.
«No,» Lance says as he look down at the boy he loves, «I really, really don’t.»

Lance learns that Allura’s gift makes him live longer than the Average human lifespan. Coran tries to calm him down by letting him know it’s not as long as a full blooded Altean would live, but Lance doesn’t want to live to see all his friends and family die. Kolivan comes with Keith to visit the Atlas (where Lance is acting as Coran’s bodyguard/diplomatic intern) and lets slip that Keith will live slightly longer than humans, but not as long as full blooded Galra. Lance and Keith bond over their shared plight, and eventually start a romantic relationship.
Flash forward, Lance and Keith look just about 40 and elderly Voltron stand beside the two on an altar, it’s their wedding. After, Shiro pulls Keith to the side and jokes about living long enough to finally hear Lance stop complaining about when Keith would propose. Keith gets emotional and expresses his feelings about having to see watch his Voltron Family age before him. Shiro says, “it might be my age talking, but the time I’ve had is enough for me. I have some regrets about how I spent some of it, and I still feel the loss of the years I spent in captivity and missing. None of that can compare to the joy and warmth I feel that the rest of these years, I’ve spent them with a loving family, amazing friends, and loving my husband. Now it’s your turn, you lost so much of those happy years as a child, and then spent most of your teen years fighting in a war. Take this opportunity to live the life you’ve earned, with a husband who’s earned your love.”
